PBO to give a statement re: the kindergarten shooting at 3:15pm today.

Lord, God, Allah, thank you for your mercy and grace. Amenhotep.

As always and ever, we live ‘neath their gaze. It clearly doesn’t matter what station we occupy–the President isn’t exempt from their contempt either.

    • lamh36

Idiots. I rarely retweet Ezra Klein, but he deserves to be retweeted for this.

Obama was right not to propose policies in that emotional press conference. He was also right to set the stage for policies soon.

      • Worldwatcher7

Ezra is right. And that is very hard for me to say.

      • I guess Ezra has his moments.

        • conlakappa

Feels like he will then have the need to double-down on his dickishness the next time he talks about the President. I will give him props but cautiously.

    • GN

They’re just seeking attention and relevance. Trying to stand out in the crowd by being perpetual cranks and “too cool/pure/principled/emo” to appreciate what PBO is doing.

    • GN

And just to add: TWENTY KIDS DEAD in one shooting and these mofos can’t think of anything better to do or say than purity troll the WH. Speaks to the sheer uselessness of the “progressive tweeps.”

      • conlakappa

They would step over the bodies of the fallen if they could, hoping to be splattered with the blood of the slain a la Jesse Jackson [yeah, I said it], if it meant they could be at the center of the story. Hey, occupiers, why don’t you occupy the parking lot of the NRA?

I get so sick of these folks.

Has Peter Daou took any real further action and got any money from Arianna with his dumb as? wonder she stiffed them.

Why the hell do they think he is going to give a Powerpoint presentation on policy at this point?

This sounds like a domestic violence issue that became a horrendous mass shooting and it rips our hearts out. I am sure we will find out that this man has been troubled, signs were clear about violent tendencies etc. Let’s talk about mental health….because so many of these incidents arise from sickened individuals who need help long before tragedy struck.

      • Camille

Peter Daou is another one of those Clinton apostles.

    • Daltex82

They are truly and utterly useless.

    • Kennymack1971

Excuse my french but fuck these people. Not even 24 hours and they start with their Obama Disappointment Syndrome bullshit.

    • Camille

And this is how they once again try to shift the attention and deserved resentment from the evil actions of the mad perpetrator who took 27 lives, the NRA who fuels the madness and the complicit Republicans who oblige them – towards crazily turning folks to blaming and resenting President Obama.

Like gun violence only started when President Obama came into office.

Can someone please tell me where these publicity hounds all were before President Obama got into the White House?

      • conlakappa

On the stroll for something else that caused them high dudgeon?

Obama Calls For ‘Meaningful Action’ To Prevent Tragic Shootings– —

    — –An emotional President Obama spoke out against the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut on Friday afternoon, remembering the children and teachers who died in today’s tragedy. The president reflected on the nation’s high rate of massacres and called on lawmakers to take “meaningful action” to prevent these kind of massacres from taking place in the future. Preliminary reports indicate that at least 27 people, including 22 children, were killed by a 24-year-old gunman.

“As a country, we have been through this too many times,” Obama said. “We’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this regardless of the politics.” Watch

  • PBomb

Mayor Bloomberg can shut the fuck up! He needs to do his job and control his damn police department.

    • MonieTalks

For those who missed Bloomberg’s rant:

Mayor Bloomberg, co-chair, Mayors Against Illegal Guns: “With all the carnage from gun violence in our country, it’s still almost impossible to believe that a mass shooting in a kindergarten class could happen. It has come to that. Not even kindergarteners learning their A,B,Cs are safe. We heard after Columbine that it was too soon to talk about gun laws. We heard it after Virginia Tech. After Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek. And now we are hearing it again. For every day we wait, 34 more people are murdered with guns. Today, many of them were five-year olds. President Obama rightly sent his heartfelt condolences to the families in Newtown. But the country needs him to send a bill to Congress to fix this problem. Calling for ‘meaningful action’ is not enough. We need immediate action. We have heard all the rhetoric before. What we have not seen is leadership – not from the White House and not from Congress. That must end today. This is a national tragedy and it demands a national response. My deepest sympathies are with the families of all those affected, and my determination to stop this madness is stronger than ever.”

      • What exactly does Bloomberg want PBO to do? What should the bill contain? What does he mean by “meaningful action”? What does that entail?

Those that are criticizing PBO for “meaningless” statement aren’t giving any specific solutions their damn selves.

        • creolechild

When is Michael Bloomberg going to do something besides just talking about what should be done about gun violence? He has the perfect opportunity and can start with the NYPD who have taken more innocent lives that I care to remember. Start there, Mayor of New York City before you try to lecture someone about taking “meaningful action,” whatever the fuck that means!

miranda- – – -NEVERMIND – —The MICHIGAN RE-THUCKERS have SPOKEN 4 the NRA -anem!!- —

    – — Hours After Connecticut Kindergarten Shooting, Michigan GOP Calls For Allowing Guns In Schools– –

    – – —Hours after the terrible shooting in a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school, the Michigan House Republicans issued demanded that Governor Rick Snyder (R) sign a bill that would make it easier for people to receive a gun permit and open up “gun free zones,” including schools. A statement attributed to Press Secretary Ari B. Adler shrugged off any link between guns in schools and school shootings:– –

What happened in Connecticut, however, is not because of nor related in any way to actions taken by the Michigan House yesterday in approving Senate Bill 59. …

    – – – -SNIP – —

The vast majority of mass killers in the United States use legally acquired weapons. A significant body of evidence suggests the wide availability of guns is strongly linked with higher murder rates.

Adler’s statement concludes by saying “Regardless of where anyone stands on the gun-rights debate, however, we will encourage everyone to try to refrain from politicizing the tragedy in Connecticut.”

Calif. judge says victims’ bodies can prevent rape

SANTA ANA, Calif. A Southern California judge is being publicly admonished for saying a rape victim “didn’t put up a fight” during her assault and that if someone doesn’t want sexual intercourse, the body “will not permit that to happen.”

The California Commission on Judicial Performance voted 10-0 to impose a public admonishment Thursday, saying Superior Court Judge Derek Johnson’s comments were inappropriate and a breach of judicial ethics.

…Johnson, a former prosecutor in the Orange County district attorney’s sex crimes unit, said during the man’s 2008 sentencing that he had seen violent cases on that unit in which women’s vaginas were “shredded” by rape.

“I’m not a gynecologist, but I can tell you something: If someone doesn’t want to have sexual intercourse, the body shuts down. The body will not permit that to happen unless a lot of damage is inflicted, and we heard nothing about that in this case,” Johnson said.

I turned off all media and turned to DIY network. I’m sick of hearing what the president should do. If people want gun laws to change it has to start lo locally. Vote vote, vote dammit!

    • MonieTalks

All the self-righteous progressives who were “shocked” and “blindsided” by Republican Gov. Snyder earlier this week are now demanding that “Today is the day” to talk about gun control and standing outside the White House demanding that of PBO right now and being the usual keyboard warriors and fake lawmakers that they are.

My BFF had an attempted armed robbery at her home last Friday in DC. By the grace of God, she and her sister and guests were spared when the gunman left after her sister screamed for her dear life. So if all these gun control advocates are really serious…I have some addresses in DC they can patrol. The next crime they see in progress, I want them to talk that criminal into turning their gun in. Stand up for crime that way. And if they can’t do that, then shut the fuck up.

      • Alma98

Tell it Monie!! Torre or whatever the hell his name is pissed me off to no end. What is he doing to stop gun violence? Not a damnable thing.

  • Camille

Krystal Ball has lost her freaking mind. Even Martin Bashir was stunned as he looked like just saw a ghost or someone had body snatched his usually smart colleague.

Krystal’s negative reaction to calls for action regarding guns on the Martin Bashir show in the aftermath of the Newton Connecticut tragedy, was not just surprising, but shocking.

She seemed visibly upset about any talk that might upset or take away the “liberty” of her gun-owning father! We have to be careful about taking away people’s “liberty” she kept insisting in a very emotional manner. WTF?

20 innocent kids are dead along with 7 adults and the perpetrator. We know that they were all shot dead with a gun. But Krystal Ball wants us to be “careful” about offending the sensibilities of “responsible” gun owners like her dad.

And here we thought that the biggest challenge facing us in this gun violence madness was the NRA and the Republicans who love them.

    • lamh36

I like Krystal Ball usually, but we forget sometimes that if not for those “damaging” pictures during her run, she started out trying to become a politician. All her talk seemed to be coming from a former wanna-be politician.

      • conlakappa

She is an NRA member. The press office there must be slow on getting talking points out to its members.

    • Town

Let somebody shoot her in the belly or her small child and we’ll see how much “liberty” she likes.

    • nellcote

She was jarring considering the timing but I think she did have a point when she said that we need to be specific in what laws we want to see. Obviously banning all guns is out of the question but going foreward what sort of legislation do we want to see? I would start with something comparable to driving a car. To purchase a gun you’d need a liscense and you’d be tested on how to use it safely, including how to keep it locked away from children and others who shouldn’t have access, and having insurance on you when you are carrying. That’s over and aside from background checks when buying ammunition and guns especially at those fucking gun fairs.

Global Day of Action Hits Walmart in 10 Countries

Today Walmart workers are demonstrating at the company headquarters in Argentina; marching through Miami, Florida, and Santiago, Chile; leafleting customers in Nicaragua; rallying outside stores in Brazil, India and South Africa; and delivering a letter to the head office of Walmart’s UK subsidiary ASDA.

As I reported yesterday, actions are planned today in ten countries, on five continents, as part of a Global Day of Action in protest of alleged retaliation against workers who are organizing in the United States. The protests are a project of global union federation UNI, the US union-affiliated Making Change at Walmart campaign and the union-backed worker group OUR Walmart.[….]

“It’s wonderful to know that Walmart workers around the world are standing with us,” Jesus Vargas told reporters on a noon conference call. “Our actions affect not just Americans, but our customers and workers around the world.”

White Shooter Indicted For Allegedly Murdering Black Student Over Loud Music |

A Florida grand jury indicted Michael Dunn on one count of first degree murder and three counts of attempted murder after Dunn killed 17 year-old Jordan Russell Davis following an argument over loud music. The 45 year-old white business man fired eight or nine times at an SUV that Davis and three of his friends were sitting in, striking Davis twice. Dunn claims he felt “threatened” and that he acted in self-defense, a claim that suggests Dunn will invoke Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law which often enables killers to get off scot free.

So Mike, explain the Aurora shooting. Not enough prayer during the last Twilight movie?

    • lamh36

ya know, I believe in God and I believe in prayer, but stuff like this make my blood boil. But not having prayer in school is NOT why 20 kindergarten kids and 6 adults are dead. This is why we can’t get anything damn thing done about gun control and mental illness. Are we supposed to assume that the parents of these kids don’t pray at home. For all we know each damn adult prayers before they go to work. The only one to blame is this wacko and the awful gun laws this country has

    • MonieTalks

I don’t give two shit what his fake ass has to say.

  • lamh36

I really need the nets to stop with the damn interviewing of children. Wolf Blitzer made the disclaimer that they only talked to children with their parents permission.
So fuckin’ what. How about just deciding to not do on camera interviews with lil children about this shit.

The school official made a damn effort to try and shield the kids who were evacuated out of the school from the massacre that had unfolded, reports are that they told kids to walk single file and close their eyes as they walk passed the massacre in the principal’s office.

I hope the image of those kids haunts those who interviewed them and put them on cameras.

Just what we needed to hear right now

After I heard about the shooting today in Connecticut, I was watching the news and hanging out on Twitter. Emotionally I was feeling angry about lots of things… yet another senseless act of violence, how the media tends to handle things like this, the NRA, folks that were saying stupid stuff on twitter, etc.

Just before the President spoke, I turned it all off and almost immediately started crying…thinking about an entire class of kindergartners being gunned down. It really is unimaginable.

I realized then that all the energy I was putting into being angry was an attempt to avoid facing the unimaginable. Its just too painful to think about. President Obama knows that we have to face the pain. And we all wept with him. The lives of those sweet children we lost deserve no less.

Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban

    By JASON RYAN (@JasonRyanABC)
    WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 2009

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

“As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons,” Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

U.S. Officials: Syria Has Prepared Several Dozen Chemical Bombs
    By Tom Bowman

U.S. and allied officials say the forces of embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad have prepared several dozen bombs and shells loaded with the lethal chemical sarin.

The number is a larger estimate than has previously been reported. The Syrians loaded the weapons with the chemical agents in the past several weeks, the officials say.

Those preparations raise fears that the fighting against rebel forces could enter a new and more troubling phase, according to the officials, who requested anonymity.

They were particularly alarmed when Assad’s forces fired Scud missiles at rebel positions earlier this week, initially believing that the warheads included sarin, one of the most deadly chemical weapons, which can kill victims within minutes.

  • The Real-Life Inspiration for One of TV’s Greatest Characters Has Died
By Aisha Harris Posted Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at 5:26 PM ET

Donnie Andrews, the real-life inspiration for one of The Wire’s most beloved characters, Omar Little, has passed away after an emergency heart surgery. Andrews, who spent his youth in Baltimore robbing drug dealers with a .44 magnum, first met David Simon, creator of the show, while he was serving a life sentence in a Phoenix prison for murder. Simon was then a reporter for The Baltimore Sun, and he would later become the writing partner of homicide detective Ed Burns, to whom Andrews turned himself in after what he says was his one and only murder. In prison, Andrews became one of the Baltimore Police Department’s best informants for all of the gang and drug-related activity in the city.

Andrews devoted his time in prison to rehabilitation, and, after serving only 17 years, he was released in 2005. He was helped by testimonies from several people who helped put him behind bars—as well as Fran Boyd, a recovering drug addict whom he later married, and who also collaborated with Simon. (She is one of the principal characters in the book he co-wrote with Burns, The Corner.) Boyd and the others convinced a judge that Andrews was reformed.

    – – – –On Friday morning, 27 people were killed in a shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. Among the fatalities are 20 children, six adults, and the shooter. (Another individual was found dead at a second scene connected to the shooting.) Sandy Hook Elementary is secure and the alleged gunman is dead, Connecticut State Lt. Paul Vance told reporters at a press conference Friday afternoon. Authorities reportedly recovered three guns from the scene—a Glock and SIG Sauer, both pistols, and a .223-caliber rifle. At least 100 rounds were fired. Officials have checked the suspect’s home for evidence.

A spokesperson for Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy said President Obama called the governor to express his condolences and offer any federal resources to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Here’s an earlier ABC New report, which includes an interview with a parent at the school:

    — – –Gun control petition to White House gets large and immediate support online

    – – – –A petition urging the Obama administration to “produce legislation that limits access to guns” has more than 25,000 signatures just hours after its inception.

“The goal of this petition is to force the Obama Administration to produce legislation that limits access to guns,” it reads in part. “While a national dialogue is critical, laws are the only means in which we can reduce the number of people murdered in gun related deaths.”

A petition on the White House’s “We the People” website needs 25,000 signatures in the first month of being posted to earn an official White House response. The gun control petition – initiated in the wake of the Connecticut elementary school massacre on Friday – reached that threshold in a few hours.

To you and cc below, these protesters find it easier, and safer no doubt, to pile on PBO and his administration. I’ve noticed whenever something of great import occurs, these protesters prove how afraid they are of rethugs and their ilk. Sorry but they’re punks if they don’t take it to the source of the problem- congress critters, lobbyists, NRA (the devil incarnate).

But the White House is NOT where a petition should be directed. It’s Congress that has to draft and pass the bill first.

I must have posted at least 25 tweets today trying to explain this to people. This is why civics classes are sorely needed, because there are way too many people who are ignorant about the basic function of government…including big-city mayors and even members of Congress, apparently.

Stolen, erm Quoted, from Charles Pierce because he has such a way with words…

“There’s also little doubt that the primary heroes of the day were schoolteachers — public school teachers — who hid children in closets and saved their lives, and who evacuated the children, leading them out through what had become a killing field in preposterously good order in what were the last hours of their childhoods, as one of the teachers said, with devastating accuracy, to a local TV station.”

We ask so much of teachers without giving them commensurate respect and compensation, I just want to say to the teachers out there THANK YOU for what you do for us all.

    • isonprize

Yes, public school teachers. The ones that RE-thugs so revile.

My heart aches for the parents and loved ones that lost their lives to this truly demonic act. It is beyond comprehension what our media has become and how completely satanic people are acting towards this tragedy. From the right wing to the left, so many are stepping on these poor children and their teachers bodies before their loved ones can even identify them yet. It is completely disgusting.

STOP interviewing children after tragedies such as this, even if their parents give permission. We know their day was probably the worst in their young lives. What more do you want them to say? JUST STOP IT.

Thanks for the link. The Inky has been shite for awhile. The only reason why I still have a Sunday subscription is to get the coupons and store circulars. The rest goes straight to recycling.

      • isonprize

I gave it up about 10+ years ago. I get my news from City Paper, Newsworks and, for public education stuff, the Philadelphia Notebook.

Of course, neighborhood ‘gossip’ gets factored in also. LOLOL but seriously, one lady talked about seeing folks with out-of-state plates snooping around a school building, and damn if it wasn’t one of the building on the close list. We are betting that it’ll also be either a development or a charter school, sooner rather than later. Some real estate mogul will have purchased it for a song.

  • MonieTalks

Hold the fuck up….who is Democratic Rep. Carolyn McCarthy saying she will “embarrass the President” on gun control. What type of person talks like this in the aftermath of a tragedy. These useless folks would say PBO gave this deranged individual the gun, if they could.

    • isonprize

Democratic Rep. Carolyn McCarthy’s website asks for a zipcode. I put in mine and the following is the response…

Regrettably, I am unable to reply to any email from individuals residing outside of my congressional district.

Until she gets a real challenge, and needs some $$$.

    • conlakappa

According to her Wiki, she has sponsored several gun-control bills. I give her wide berth on this issue–her husband and son were gunned down in a mass shooting. This isn’t just a passing, let’s pile on the President moment for her. This issue is what brought her to Congress.

      • MonieTalks

Yes. But why does she feel the need to say she will embarrass THIS President. She served during Clinton’s Presidency (in which Columbine, the Paducah, Ky shooting and others) occurred. She has remained in Congress during GWBush’s two terms in which we saw a continuation of mass shootings. Hell she even represents NY where Amadou Diallo and Sean Bell were murdered.

It is fine to be passionate, but after 15 years in Congress, she all of a sudden figures she can be all vocal and “embarass” the President. Sorry, that isn’t a real stand, that is trying to be paternalistic like the rest of these so-called liberals who apparently have been asleep for the last 20 years, but now want the Black president to fix all the woes that they have twiddled their thumbs at.

If anything, she should have said “I was voted initially to Congress 15 years ago, and I along with so many others have failed collectively for far too long”. She can stuff that “embarrass” shit somewhere else, imo.

        • conlakappa

Because she isn’t rational about this? Every time something like this happens, she relives the most horrible day of her life, which would be yet another time in her daily life that she relives it? I think she did speak to the issue during the previous administrations. She tried to push after the worst mass shooting, at Virginia Tech. Maybe she was speaking from that frame of reference? I would also question the source citing her: Politico. Do we pick and choose what to give credence to as reported by that tool of the GOP? Is it possible that this is yet another attempt to say that the President isn’t the leader of his party/Pelosi isn’t in charge of her caucus?

Truly, to no other member of Congress would I give this wide berth while also getting what your thinking is. I am just respectfully disagreeing.

          • isonprize

thanks for the insight. I still don’t get the “embarrass the President” piece of this. And yes, I will consider GOPolitico as ‘side-eye worthy’ as a source.

          • MonieTalks

yes conlakappa, we will respectfully disagree on this one.

You know, to this day, Rep. Elijah Cummings’ nephew murdere has still remained unsolved in Norfolk, VA. Christopher Cummings was murdered in the early AM hours of Father’s Day in his off-campus apartment close to Old Dominion University. I must have missed his Democratic colleagues gathering with him, giving a press conference, demanding gun control, or when they demanded a bill right after their other colleague Gabby Giffords was shot down with so many other i=citizens. The influential members are no longer immune from the violence seen in America’s streets but yet PBO needs to be “embarrassed”, while they live the actual pain with virtually no action. The President does not need to hold these over-paid, forever vacationing public servants hands to do what’s right. She has been in Congress for 15 years like most of the others, she should know what to do by now. I am so sick of this oft repeated cop-out by both Democrats and Republicans that they need guidance. COngress is not an unapid internship…someof these folks have been in there since I’ve been in high school…..they need to do THEIR damn job. This is a tasteless diatribe, just like Maxine Water’s “unleash” comment…..more misdirected anger.

And yes, Carolyn McCarthy has experienced unimaginable pain….but the choice of the word “embarrass” the President is just plain foolish. Why the need to want to humiliate PBO, since that is what embarrass implies for these tragic siituations, especially in this particular case where the questions surrounding it encompass so much more.. beyond just gun control. The guns this man used in his killing spree were legally obtained by his own mother. What may be uncovered as we all learn more is that this young man may have need intense therapy or hospitalization, constant surveillance, etc. And that is part of the larger conversation. And now the next day after there are even reports that the mother had NO ties to the school.

David Remnick already has some silly article up, grandstanding against PBO like McCarthy did….I just don’t have time for this mess anymore.

      • MonieTalks

Unless she sponsors/indtroduces a bill that PBO can sign she can have a seat.I am in no mood for any ‘PBO must do’ isht from Congress, given the fact that 65 of them told Holder to not renew the assault weapons ban.

    – —Alabama Suit Cites FBI Tapes As Proof Of Lawmaker Racism – – –

    – – —A group of Alabama voters alleged in a federal lawsuit filed on Wednesday that a redistricting plan for the state House and Senate discriminated against minority voters and was passed with racist intentions.

Their evidence? Secret FBI recordings that captured racial comments by two state lawmakers who turned out to have been cooperating with a major investigation.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson wrote a scathing opinion last year concerning state Sen. Scott Beason (R) and former Rep. Benjamin Lewis (R), who were cooperating with the FBI as part of a massive corruption investigation in the state. Thompson concluded that the two Republicans were only cooperating with the FBI because of their “ulterior motives rooted in naked political ambition and pure racial bias.” He said the pair wanted to keep a pro-gambling bill off the ballot in 2010 because they believed such a proposal would increase African-American turnout and negatively impact Republicans.

One of the recordings featured Beason referring to blacks as “aborigines,” while another recording captured him agreeing with colleagues who predicted that casinos would lure blacks with free buffets and gambling credits and bus them to the polls.

Those FBI tapes play a central role in the federal lawsuit filed by the Alabama Democratic Conference and several voters who allege the redistricting plan passed by the Republican-controlled legislature and signed by Gov. Robert Bentley (R) is discriminatory.

    – – –Earth to the Pundits: Scott Brown Lost Big and Would Lose Big Again – —

    – – – –The chattering class is fond of far-fetched theories that lead to lots of intrigue, and one fanciful idea that has been floating around lately is that Scott Brown is ready for a comeback.

The hypothesis is that if John Kerry is nominated to President Obama’s cabinet, then Brown would be a strong contender to fill Kerry’s seat. It has even been speculated that Senate Republicans went after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice so harshly just to improve Brown’s chances at a comeback.

    – -If you look at the facts, though, you’ll see that Brown is far from the sure bet to win another contest that Republicans hope he is. Consider the following:

Who lost by a bigger margin than almost any candidate in a competitive Senate race in the country?

Scott Brown. The 7.5-point loss he suffered at Elizabeth Warren’s hands was even worse than the 5.5-point loss for Brown’s fellow Republican Richard Mourdock in Indiana — that’s right, the guy who said pregnancy from rape is “something that God intended.” In short, as convenient as it is to refer to the Massachusetts contest between Brown and Warren as a close race, Brown took a beating.

Who was the only incumbent in the entire U.S. Senate to lose in 2012?
