Adele Pregnant With Her First Child
Singer posted the news on her official website

    By Rolling Stone
    June 29, 2012 1:38 PM ET

Adele’s indefinite hiatus from music might be lasting a little longer: The singer just announced that she is pregnant with her first child on her official website.

“I’m delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together,” she wrote. “I wanted you to hear the news direct from me, obviously we’re over the moon and very excited but please respect our privacy at this precious time. Yours always, Adele xx.”

The father of the child is Adele’s boyfriend Simon Konecki, co-founder of the U.K. bottled water company Life Water. Konecki, 36, divorced his first wife four years ago.

POU Family. I’m asking for prayers please. My daughter went into the hospital early this morning for what was supposed to be a “little tweak” to her pace maker. She has a heart condition. My SIL just called. Apparently there are some complications so docs expect to be working on her several more hours. I’m scared, trying not to be but she has been through so much the last 18 months. I will stand strong because I’ve got to. All prayers, healing light & positive thought so welcome. Thank you.

I am grateful for Obamacare so I don’t also have to worry about how we would pay for this. She has insurance & they can’t kick her off. Thank God, thank our good Prez & the good Supremes who put people before politics.

Contrary to the media’s best efforts…looks like June was a pretty good month for 44. HA!

House Passes Highway And Student Loan Bill | Moments ago, the House of Representatives passed a re-authorization of the highway bill by a vote of 373-52. House Republicans had previously been blocking the package, holding up funding for 1.9 million transportation jobs. The bill also includes an extension of the student loan rates that will prevent them from doubling on Sunday. The legislation will now go to the Senate, where it’s likely to pass.

The Senate just approved the bill by a vote of 74-19.

    Chronicling Mitt’s Mendacity, Vol. XXIV

    By Steve Benen
    Fri Jun 29, 2012 2:07 PM EDT.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that came out this week included an interesting, open-ended question: “What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Mitt Romney as president?” Poll respondents weren’t offered any choices; they could offer any response they wanted.

The results weren’t especially surprising — the most common answer noted Romney being very wealthy. There were also plenty of folks who mentioned Romney’s conservatism, his Mormon faith, his controversial positions on women’s rights, etc.

Down towards the bottom of the list, however, was one that jumped out me: “Dishonest.” For at least some respondents — not a lot, but some — the first thing that came to mind when thinking about Romney was the candidate’s willingness to say things that aren’t true.

It’s good to know I’m not the only one who’s noticed. In fact, the public response should probably be far more common given how quickly the Republican’s record of falsehoods is growing. Consider, for example, the 24th installment of my weekly series, chronicling Mitt’s mendacity

The price trend should continue, barring any unforeseen disruption in production or distribution that would interrupt delivery from the Gulf of Mexico or block tankers from arriving in Savannah, or a major conflict in the Middle East. A hurricane could cause such a disruption.

According to the latest data from the Oil Price Information Service, the average price for regular unleaded in metro Atlanta Friday was around $3.21, down a penny from Thursday, 8 cents from a week ago, 22 cents from a month ago and 29 cents from a year ago.

Obama sees Ky. mom who lost legs in March twister

WASHINGTON — A Kentucky woman who lost both legs shielding her children from a tornado walked arm-in-arm with President Barack Obama into the Oval Office on Friday.

The visit by Stephanie Decker came just under four months after the twister wrecked her home in Henryville, Ky. She had tied a blanket around the children and thrown herself on top of them when falling debris crushed her legs.

    – —Conservatives Claim Roberts Upheld Obamacare Because Of ‘Cognitive Problems’ Due To Epilepsy Medication- –

    – — – Chief Justice John Roberts — a George W. Bush appointee — surprised many conservatives when he wrote the majority opinion upholding Obamacare’s individual mandate, but now some conservative activists are trying to link the side effects of Roberts’ epilepsy medication to his jurisprudence.

On his radio show yesterday, right-wing host Michael Savage — who has previously called autism a “phony disease” — claimed that Roberts’ epilepsy is the root cause of his “cognitive dissociation” in the Obamacare ruling:

Let’s talk about Roberts. I’m going to tell you something that you’re not going to hear anywhere else, that you must pay attention to. It’s well known that Roberts, unfortunately for him, has suffered from epileptic seizures. Therefore he has been on medication. Therefore neurologists will tell you that medication used for seizure disorders, such as epilepsy, can introduce mental slowing, forgetfulness and other cognitive problems. And if you look at Roberts’ writings you can see the cognitive dissociation in what he is saying.

    – –When I imagine track & field athletes, I have to admit, I usually tend to forget the field competitors. From the incredibly agile high jumpers to the muscular shot putters, these athletes put in as much work as any other Olympic hopeful, yet they’ll usually set historically relevant marks in comparative anonymity.

    – — -SNIP- —

So without anymore avail, let’s get familiar with two of the spectacular athletes who made our Women’s Hammer team and will represent America in London in this July.

First up we have Amber Campbell, a Nap-Town native who made her second Olympic team after setting The Trials record with a throw of 235 feet, 6 inches. She stands 5-foot 7 inches tall and tips the scale at a nimble 200 pounds.

    – – – – -SNIP—-

Hailing from sunny Southern California, Cosby, 30, was the 2011 Outdoor Champion. At this year’s Olympic Trials she threw 232 feet, 2 inches, capturing the Olympic “A’ standard and booking her ticket to London.

    – — -SNIP- –

Both of these women are clear examples that fitness and health are more than meets the imagination, giving bigger young girls a template for how to turn a supposed negative into a positive. Good luck to Amber and Jessica!

Go ahead and speak TRUTH, Miranda! These people, both the GOP and the Media were so sure that the Court was gong to strike down the ACA. To be honest, I also thought so too. But my great nephew, who is at Harvard Law School, was absolutely convinced that the ACA would be upheld. He told his father (my nephew), who is a law professor, that Antonin Scalia’s angry outbursts, following the Arizona immigration decision, was a telling sign that ACA would be upheld. Never again will I ever underestimate the wisdom of attentive young people.

The Media on Sunday will probably feature old politicians like McCain, and old pundits like George Will, who will spit doom and groom for President Obama. Once again, the media GOP enablers will overlook and ignore the smart young people who pay little attention to the the tired, boring, clueless, and backward Sunday talk show guests.

If young people turnout to vote at the same rate as they did in 2008, I don’t think –not withstanding the media propaganda in his favor– that Willard “Mitt” Romney has a chance of being elected President. There is, of course, the possibility that Republicans could rig/steal the votes— especially in Republican controlled states like Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio,

After declaring a “major disaster” in the state and promising federal aid, Obama got a firsthand view of the fires and their toll on residential communities. More than 30,000 people have been evacuated in what is now the most destructive wildfire in state history.

“We all recognize that there but for the grace of God go I,” said the president. “We’ve got to make sure that we have each others’ backs.” Obama’s appearance in Colorado took on added significance coming less than five months before the election. The state is a crucial swing state, and the president’s visit illustrated the enormous power of incumbency he enjoys to deliver not only assistance but to show compassion and command.

    – — SCOTUS: 5 Things the Obamacare Ruling Does for Blacks and Latinos – – —

    — -Blacks, Latinos and other folks of color make up more than half of the nation’s uninsured population. And many have framed the fight for affordable care as being a battle for racial equality precisely because African Americans and Latinos have historically had limited access to quality care due to institutional barriers. Today’s Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act will have a substantial effect on Latinos and Blacks. Let’s take a look at what Obamacare does for these Americans:

    1. More Blacks and Latinos will gain health coverage: A recent study shows that the Affordable Care Act could cut the eight-percentage-point Black-White differential in uninsured rates in half. The nineteen-percentage-point Hispanic-White differential in uninsured rates could be reduced by slightly less than a quarter. The extent that Black and Latino communities will have a lower rate of uninsured members will largely depend on how people are being informed about enrollment in Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and the soon to be created health insurance exchanges. In the Latino community, addressing language barriers will be key.

miranda- — Here is a VIDEO- -of MR. PRESIDENT’s TOUR of COLORADO-

    – – -Obama tours wildfire devastation-

    – – — President Obama visited Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday to tour the devastation from a sprawling wildfire that has consumed some 350 homes and claimed at least one life.

The president began his tour in a neighborhood consumed by fire three days prior. Homes in the neighborhood, like those throughout the region, had been torched by the flames, leaving little but foundation behind. The twisted, melted frames of automobiles in garages and on the street served notice of the destruction that had swept through.

The president spoke with firefighters who explained how the fire had jumped from one house to the next, and said he was stunned by the aftermath.

“Obviously, as you saw in the some of these subdivisions, the devastation is enormous. And our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families who have been affected,” the president said.

I saw the footage. I was also on the Colorado web sites some of the pics are just devastating. I’ve only been close to one forest fire where we got evacuated. It wasn’t that big & they contained it pretty fast but it was very scary.

One thing that concerns me so much is the health issues for so many living in the area, especially those with asthma. Even if their homes aren’t threatened, breathing that air can be so sick making for the most vulnerable. I hope people are paying close attention to that.

White House cursing is not a BFD
    By Steve Benen

    Fri Jun 29, 2012 3:20 PM EDT.

Two years ago, at the signing ceremony for the Affordable Care Act, Vice President Biden was overheard telling President Obama the historic occasion was a “big f**king deal.” The comment wasn’t intended for the public — Biden didn’t know the microphone would pick it up — but once it was out there, the White House embraced it as an endearing Biden moment.

And with that in mind, the Obama campaign is selling t-shirts like these, touting the same “BFD” message. It led Jake Tapper today to highlight the recent history of “blue” language and Team Obama.
Conservatives suggest that cursing is now a “thing” for the Obama campaign, given that campaign manager Jim Messina yesterday blogged “Let’s win the damn election,” and Democratic National Committee executive director Patrick Gaspard tweeted “it’s constitutional. B******.” (Asterisks included by ABC)

And Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod in March blogged. “Hell yeah, I like Obamacare.”

Eric Fehrnstrom, Romney’s senior adviser, said language like this is “not presidential.” (Follow up question for Fehrnstrom: your campaign believes in heckling and sending a bus to drive around in circles while honking. Is that “presidential”?)

But before these questions about political cursing make the rounds too much, let’s also pause to note recent history. When George W. Bush decided to launch an unnecessary war, he proclaimed, “F**k Saddam, we’re taking him out.” When Dick Cheney ran into Pat Leahy on the Senate floor in 2004, he said, “Go f**k yourself.”

    ——————————————————————————–

During a discussion on immigration policy a few years ago, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) screamed at Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), saying “F**k you! This is chickens**t stuff.” On the campaign trail a few months ago, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), who positions himself as a virtues champion of traditional values, blasted a reporter’s question as “bulls**t.”

The point is people in politics sometimes use profanity. So do people outside of politics. Let’s not make too big a fuss about this.

Postscript: I don’t claim to be an expert on cursing, but are words like “damn” and “hell” still considered “bad” words? Are people who use them seriously at risk of being accused of having a “potty mouth”?

Oh, the pearls done been clutched! The Darth One calls a reporter an a**hole, is chimed in by the previous occupant with a “big time,” which would seem to affirm a nasty personal comment made about someone and considered, what, salty and macho? Mind you, Jake Tapper made his bones at the Washington City Paper, which is known for throwing as many f-bombs as it did the word the but he’s getting precious about this? Fools? Please.

    With friends like Rubio…
    By Steve Benen
    Fri Jun 29, 2012 12:35 PM EDT.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a far-right rising star who’ll be vetted for the Republicans’ vice presidential nomination, has a history of saying things that aren’t especially helpful to Mitt Romney.

In March, for example, a day after endorsing the former Massachusetts governor, the Florida senator said, “There are a lot of other people out there that some of us wish had run for president, but they didn’t.” Ouch.

Now it’s falling on Rubio to defend Romney’s health care reform law, which happens to be nearly identical to President Obama’s health care reform law. Specifically, Rubio was tasked with explaining why Obama’s tax penalty for failing to have insurance is outrageous, but Romney’s identical tax policy for failing to have insurance is perfectly acceptable.

The defense isn’t coming together especially well (thanks to Dan Sachar for the tip).
The immediate response to the Democrats’ tax rebuttal from Republicans was less than impressive.

Romney “supported it on the state level. Which means if you didn’t like it in Massachusetts, you could move to another state,” Rubio said on Bloomberg Television. “What are people supposed to do? Leave the United States now because of Barack Obama’s brilliant idea to stick the IRS on millions of people? More importantly, the state of Massachusetts doesn’t have the IRS.”

First, Massachusetts has a Department of Revenue, which is the state version of the IRS. Second, I realize public policy isn’t Marco Rubio’s strong point, but “millions of people” won’t have to pay the tax penalty under the Affordable Care Act.

But I’m especially impressed with the idea that Romney’s former constituents “could move to another state” if they were outraged by Romney’s health care policy. Or as Jon Chait put it, “Right! At least it’s possible to flee the socialist hell that Mitt Romney constructed in Massachusetts for another state, but there’s no way you can leave the country! Even if you make it past the armed guards, you’ll be killed by the electrical fence! No, wait — I’m thinking of East Germany.”

          • nathkatun7

Aquagranny, You make good points. But, there is one thing that I’ve also observed about racists: they will look the other way so long as the person of color they embrace promises to act like them, or even out do them, in being racist. For example: Justice Thomas and Congressman Allen West.

On the other hand, you’re right that the reason Romney’s base will be uncomfortable about picking Condi Rice is her brains. I don’t think that Romney will pick a VP, and especially a black woman, who may come across as being smarter than him.

THIS IS WHO THEY ARE! (Video – 1min +)

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi (R) erroneously tells Governor Rick Scott (R) that the U.S. Supreme Court decision on President Obama’s health care ruling was voted down (13-second mark). Scott then halts the state clemency board meeting for a five-minute break. About a minute later, Bondi’s chief of staff, Carlos Muniz, realizes most of the law has been upheld.

It is repulsive to me that these people are actually happy thinking that millions of people would be denied access to decent health care. These people are, initially, very happy!!

THIS IS WHO THEY ARE!! This is why I will always call them Re-thug-licans.

    ANOTHER shower

Eric Cantor just said that after Republicans repeal ObamaCare (which won’t happen), then Republicans will finally have a chance to do healthcare right (naturally, no specifics).

That would be the same chance the Republican majority in both houses had in 1995, in 1997, in 1999, in 2001, in 2003, and in 2005.

    Apparently, seven’s the charm.

What frauds these people are. Even Nixon wouldn’t buy a used car from these slippery and trickiest of dicks.

Although Charlie Cook, of the Cook Report, writes that “If you’re waiting for a retreat of tea party politics in the House Republican Conference and a resurgence of Blue Dog Democrats in the next Congress, you are likely going to be disappointed,” I nonetheless find it ethically inconceivable that the American electorate would return a majority of these swindling buffoons and swinish racketeers to the United States House.

    Mitt Romney–>Hot Shower

What else can one say about Mitt Romney’s “rebuttal” than that it was shockingly unsurprising. This man is an indefatigable, shameless, amoral liar–and we expected every syllable of this morning’s compounded lies.

It’s actually sickening; just listening to Romney’s lies is a sickening act. What’s more, while listening I always feel like another shower is in moral order. To subject oneself to a Jim Jones presidential candidate–from one of the two major parties, no less–is a nearly indescribable act of degrading participation in pure, wretched filth.

Good God, is Romney really the best the GOP could do? After eight years of George W.?–who, as I recall, cost me 2,920 additional showers?

    from Charles Pierce:

    This is fantastic:

Charles Pierce: One of the overlooked elements in Thursday’s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act is that, beyond the individual mandate and the hysterical politics surrounding it, the act itself is chock-full of innovative ideas and pilot programs and all sorts of other experimental goodness directed toward making easier the lives of people dealing with serious health problems. Like, for example, Alzheimer’s Disease…

Tucked away in the act is a pilot program for 10,000 people called the Independence At Home program. This is a technique first developed by the Veterans Administration by which a patient with a chronic disease, like Alzheimer’s, is treated in his or her own home by a team of doctors, nurse practitioners, geriatric pharmacists, and any other health professional whose specialty is required.

This is not only cost-efficient, being infinitely cheaper than hospitals and nursing homes, but it is a comfort for the patients and their families…

…. The program is the brainchild of Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), whose mother died from Alzheimer’s …. “Let’s just start with pre-existing conditions,” Markey told me on Thursday evening. “If the law had been struck down, you didn’t have those protections anymore. And we know that five million people have Alzheimer’s right now, and that 15 million are going to get it. Let’s go to bankruptcy, then. The law says that just because you got sick, you cannot go bankrupt.”

    It was always a trap

Friday, June 29, 2012 | Posted by Liberal Librarian at 12:07 PM

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 24 hours—and if you’re reading this essay, chances are you haven’t been—President Obama—and, more importantly, the American people—were handed a huge victory yesterday when the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act in its entirety. Deaniac will have an analysis of the decision in depth. I want to address the political impact of the decision going into November.

In my previous essay, I delved into my fascination with Roman history to draw a parallel with what I see as part of Obama’s strategy. The way that the ACA case has played out confirms what I see as his strategy.

If you remember, Republicans were braying that the President was going to run a “billion dollar campaign” for re-election that would destroy democracy in the US forever. As usual, the Right was projecting its own sins onto its opponents. The fact is that the Obama campaign was never going to get near $1 billion in funding. Democrats, were aghast at the Citizens United ruling, and major donors like Warren Buffet will not donate to Democratic Super PACs as a matter of principle. We can argue the merits of such positions—I think as long as Citizens United is the law of the land it’s more than short-sighted to unilaterally hamstring ourselves—but the fact remains that with that decision the floodgates opened for GOP donors. Those who donate to the GOP Super PACs see themselves as the most harmed by Democratic policies, and giving a small percentage of their wealth to defeat the socialist interloper in the White House and his compatriots all across the country is seen as a small but wise investment. The Republican campaign was always going to have more money than the Democrats once finance laws were struck down. Darkly warning that the Democrats were going to have hundreds of millions of dollars to impose their will upon an unwilling populace was the usual Republican strategy of deflecting their own intentions onto their enemies.

Pres. Obama knew he was going to face opponents who were better funded than he would be; for the first time in modern US history, the incumbent would be at a financial disadvantage in an election.

But Obama has been here before. Hilary Clinton was the presumptive nominee in 2008—before he beat her by amassing an intricate knowledge of the delegate selection rules which allowed him to amass delegates while the Clinton campaign focused on winning big states. He was supposed to lose to war hero John McCain; America wasn’t ready for a black President. But then McCain chose Sarah Palin as his vice president, and Obama kept campaigning, drumming up enthusiasm, instilling in people the hope that things could change if the son of an African father and a white Kansas mother could be elected in a country with a dark racial history.

Just like Hannibal facing a larger Roman army, Obama has faced opponents with more resources, and beaten them by a combination of keen strategy and deft tactics. His opponents always expect his attacks to come from the normal direction, the way it has always been done, and he upends them by attacking out of left field. As an aikido master, he allows his opponents’ own momentum to throw them, so that he can conserve his own precious resources.

However, being at a disadvantage means you have to take risks. And that’s what he did with bringing ACA before the Supreme Court this year.

He could have waited until after the election. There was no legal reason to bypass lower court action and send the case directly to SCOTUS. But, the health care law was the President’s greatest domestic achievement. He was always planning to run on it, despite what the Right was saying. But it would be more difficult to run on it when the law’s status was still unsettled. It needed to be decided, one way or the other. And the best way to run on it was to bringing it before the Court, have it upheld, and then tout its provisions for the entire campaign. Upholding it would also fire up his supporters. Victory breeds victory, but victory only comes to the bold. It was a bold tactic to push forward the ruling on the law—a decision that many on the Left condemned after the “disastrous” oral arguments.
