Ex-senator Scott Brown won’t run for Kerry seat

Former senator Scott Brown will not run for the seat of departing Sen. John Kerry in Massachusetts, the Associated Press reports.

The decision by Brown, a moderate Republican, means Democrats now have a better chance of keeping the Massachusetts seat.

Brown was defeated in November by Democrat Elizabeth Warren, in the nation’s most expensive Senate race. Democrats had made Brown a top target since he was the surprise winner of a 2010 race to replace Democrat Edward Kennedy, who died the previous summer.

Report: Obama may get new Oval Office

Another Oval Office is being readied in an office building across the way from the West Wing, and President Obama could be relocated there this summer, according to RealClearPolitics’ Alexis Simendinger:

In preparation for a major, two-year renovation of the West Wing, the government is undertaking extensive work to complete a new executive office for President Obama at the south end of the adjacent Eisenhower Executive Office Building, RCP has learned.

Michel’le had beautiful voice and she could sing her but off. Although when she talked you wanted to mute the TV. I remember in an interview with Regis she said her voice didn’t mature as she got older.

Something in my Heart is still one of my all-time favorites by Michel’le. It’s still hard to believe she was once married Suge Knight! SMDH.

      • Alma98

Oh yes that is one my favorites too, as for Suge Knight I got nothing lol.

I remember back in the day, the first time I heard her speak, I just bust out laughing. (yes, ignorant, I know…) But between her and that Nanny chick, I would have to wear earplugs. LOLOL

  • crazycanuck

You know I really don’t think Americans realize what they have in President Obama. I’ve been reading twitter, and genrally going around to different sites.

People seem to want this man to fix every grievance they have had for eons.

They want him to eradicate poverty. Poverty which has been around since Jesus walked the earth.

They want him to fix gun violence. They don’t want to get involved in helping to ‘fix’ it, but want him and only him to do something about gun violence. The way some of them talk, you’ll swear he created the problem

He must talk about race, over and over and over again, until what I don’t know.

I can go on and on. It’s truly amazing. I’ve never seen anything like this.

    • isonprize

That’s cuz you’ve never seen a blackety, blackety, black black President of the United States. He’s socialist, Muslim, magic negro, anti-white, pro-white, anti-black, pro-black, pro-gay, anti-gay, etc.

      They can’t all be right…

      • crazycanuck

LOL, so much is put on this one man’s shoulders.

        • nathkatun7

And he keeps dusting off all the mud and doing what needs to be done without paying too much mind to the foolishness.

      • jziglar

Also he is a radical black christian, no an atheist, no a hindu, a jew, a corporatist, a communist, a nazi, a marxist.

    • Ebogan63

      Agreed. Pretty fucking annoying.

    • GN

I was reading the gossip blog, bossip, and they have a piece on there with Alcee Hastings’ remarks. What is beyond amusing to me is that there are commenters there who day in day out have nothing but nastiness to say about black people. They literally go on there and rant against black women as wretches, and black men as wretches, and have these battles against each other for which sex of black people is the worst. Why are they now all over that Hastings piece chiding President Obama as if they give a single solitary damn about the majority of the black community? All of this is to say that some of these sites are full of trolls, and firebaggers, solepatrollers, etc., and shouldn’t be taken seriously. You would never know that the President has relatively high approvals right now reading some of that foolishness.

      • nathkatun7

You are absolutely spot-on, GN! By the way the proof is in the pudding as they say. The Black community, despite the self-serving people like Smiley, and even Hastings, resoundingly registered their support of the President on Nov.6th, 2012. By the way, how come Hastings and CBC never sent a list to Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton demanding he appoint Blacks in his Cabinet? Why are they all of a sudden trying to order a duly elected President of the United States to do their bidding as if he was their houseboy?

May be it’s me, but I remember how righteously aggressive members of the CBC were in supporting Bill Clinton and Al Gore. Yet, as soon as President Obama was elected, many members of CBC became his constant critics. They of course underestimated the basic common sense of the vast majority of Blacks whom they claimed to represent.

President Obama Calls Family Of Hadiya Pendleton

CHICAGO (CBS) — President Obama called the family of a Chicago teenager who was gunned down about a mile from his Kenwood neighborhood home this week.

Courtney Maxwell, the pastor for Hadiya Pendleton, said the president called to express his condolences and said it meant a lot to the Pendleton family. Maxwell did not provide any details about the conversation.

    – — — By this time next year, white people will be a minority in California. According to new demographic information released yesterday by the state’s Department of Finance, Latinos will catch up to whites by the middle of this year, with each representing roughly 39% of the population. By next year, Latinos will be the relative majority, and their edge looks on track to grow from there; the department estimates that by 2060, they’ll make up 48% of the population, compared to 30% for whites, the LA Times reports.

—What’s more, the Latino population is significantly younger than the white one, meaning white people will make up an ever-smaller portion of the work force. By 2030, there will be 7.2 million Latinos younger than 25 and 2.2 million seniors; among whites, those numbers will be 3.8 million and 4.1 million, respectively. – - -SNIP- –

‘Super Fly’ musical heading to Broadway
    by Chris Witherspoon |

More than 40 years after becoming a cult classic Blaxploitation film, Super Fly is heading to Broadway as a musical.

The 1972 film was directed by Gordon Parks Jr. and starred Ron O’Neal as Priest, an African American cocaine dealer who is trying to quit the drug business.

The soundtrack for Super Fly, which was the third studio album from soul and funk musician Curtis Mayfield, took on a life of its own. The soundtrack topped the Billboard pop album charts for 4 weeks, and to this day is one of the few film soundtracks to out-gross the movie it accompanied.

Oh, this is interesting because I thought Beyonce was gonna get the March cover of Vogue!

Spotted: A “Vogue” Photo Shoot at the White House
We hear Annie Leibovitz is shooting a cover with First Lady Michelle Obama. By Carol Ross Joynt

Spotted Thursday morning at the White House: a team from Vogue moving cameras into the residence. What could that be about? Well, it turns out it’s a photo shoot of First Lady Michelle Obama for the magazine’s cover, most likely the March issue. Also the President’s public schedule is clear for the day, which could indicate he may be involved in the photography session. On the other hand, he may just be staying off the radar as Congress begins confirmation hearings for former Republican senator Chuck Hagel, who has been nominated for Secretary of Defense.

Either way, what we hear is that noted celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz is doing the shoot. What we don’t know is what Mrs. Obama will be wearing, though she has been actively involved in making the choices. Typically, when Vogue does a shoot, they bring a number of fashion options—clothes, shoes, accessories, plus experts for hair and makeup—and that’s just for “regular” people. For the First Lady the project is probably comparable to a small military deployment.

I thought black history month DID include all of those backgrounds…no?

    • nathkatun7

With all due respect, this is a very shallow article. The author assumes that his/her experience with Black history month celebration is universal. Most Black history months I’ve attended have, at one time or the other, included all the names he/she listed and more. Moreover, the celebration of Black history has often covered similar grounds as POU in celebrating Black scientists; Black Educators; Black Business; Black Artists (visual Arts, Music, theatre/motion picture and Literature), Black Athletes; Blacks in the military; Black elected officials; and of course leaders in the Freedom Struggle that spans centuries.

Again It may be the case that the events the author has attended were limited to the people he listed. But that’s not true of all the Black history month celebrations held across the country. For example, I remember here in San Diego, in 1980′s when we focused the month long celebration on Black pioneers in San Diego.

Presidential Proclamation — 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Rosa Parks

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

    A PROCLAMATION

On December 1, 1955, our Nation was forever transformed when an African-American seamstress in Montgomery, Alabama, refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger. Just wanting to get home after a long day at work, Rosa Parks may not have been planning to make history, but her defiance spurred a movement that advanced our journey toward justice and equality for all.

Though Rosa Parks was not the first to confront the injustice of segregation laws, her courageous act of civil disobedience sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott — 381 days of peaceful protest when ordinary men, women, and children sent the extraordinary message that second-class citizenship was unacceptable. Rather than ride in the back of buses, families and friends walked. Neighborhoods and churches formed carpools. Their actions stirred the conscience of Americans of every background, and their resilience in the face of fierce violence and intimidation ultimately led to the desegregation of public transportation systems across our country.

Rosa Parks’s story did not end with the boycott she inspired. A lifelong champion of civil rights, she continued to give voice to the poor and the marginalized among us until her passing on October 24, 2005.

    Man shot on Morehouse campus

Police were investigating a shooting at Morehouse College on Friday evening.

Atlanta Police spokesman Officer John Chafee said a male was shot in the arm. ‘The victim is alert, breathing and conscious,” Chafee said.

At least one report from the campus said the shooting occurred near Archer Hall and Forbes Arena, and may have stemmed from an argument over use of a basketball court.

On Twitter, the Morehouse Student Government Association said the shooting occurred around 5 p.m. on the steps of Archer Hall and that the student was shot in the forearm. He was taken by paramedics to the hospital, the SGA said.

The SGA said Atlanta police and campus police responded within minutes.

While the shooting victim is believed to be a student, it was unclear whether the alleged shooter was also a student.

The Atlanta police spokesman did not say whether the victim was a student. Chafee said Morehouse campus police would be handling the case.

Obama Called Parents Of Teen Slain In Chicago

    By Kim Vatis

    | Friday, Feb 1, 2013 | Updated 3:36 PM CST

President Barack Obama called the parents of a 15-year-old Chicago girl who was gunned down this week at a South Side park, the family’s pastor confirmed.

Rev. Courtney Maxwell of Greater Deliverance Temple said Obama made the call earlier this week.

Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon while hanging out with friends. News of her death sparked national outrage as legislators discuss gun reform and comparisons are drawn between local gun violence and the country’s recent massacres.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced and despite a petition asking Obama to attend the girl’s funeral, Maxwell said there is no word on a response.

Damn! Harry Belafonte spoke the truth!

    • crazycanuck

What did he say? I was looking at it, but my sound was off

      • Alma98

He basically called out black leaders in congress and the church for not helping the community. He talked about all the killings in the black community. And he called out white folks whining about their gun rights. He called out black actors who sit on the sidelines while the community suffer. I don’t think he said anything about PBO. Hopefully it’ll be up on you tube soon cause it was righteous.

    Charles M. Blow @charlesmblow
WH issued a proclamation today abt the 100th Anniv of Rosa Parks’s B-day http://t.co/06Z60ozQ Doesn’t mention her life of activism/militancy

    • aleth

Who does not know rosa parks? Get the f out of here, enough with these nonsense

      • nathkatun7

Well said, Aleth! Why is it that everything President Obama does has to be minutely dissected and scrutinized in order to find some reason to bash him? I say shame on you Charles Blow for pissing on a positive proclamation honoring Rosa Parks’ 100th Birthday. In my humble opinion, Blow’s criticism of the President’s proclamation was petty and uncalled for. It’s self evident that Rosa Parks, who courageously challenged segregation on the Buses, lived a life “of activism/militancy.”

    – - -Nevada Republicans Embrace Path To Citizenship For Undocumented Immigrants As Civil Rights Issue – –

    – —- Nevada Republicans became the first state GOP party to endorse comprehensive immigration with a clear path to citizenship. In a statement, officials said the GOP’s hard line on immigration reform conflicts with the “party’s historic commitment to civil rights.” They proposed some of the same tenets in the Senate’s bipartisan framework:

The GOP has increasingly found itself in positions that do not meet the demographic realities of the State’s electorate. These positions also conflict with our party’s historic commitment to civil rights. To that end, Republicans must become more inclusive, reflecting our desire to secure a better life for all Americans, and equally important, for our children.

We support a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants that would require registering with the government; and, include the ability to communicate in English, performing military or other community service, and proof of financial responsibility as required by the USCIS. One hundred and fifty years ago, our country fought a bloody Civil War. That war affirmed we have only one class of citizens — American.

    – -THIS!! IS “WHYCOME” – - – ->Nevada has the nation’s fifth-highest Latino population, at 26.5 percent. Immigrants play a major role in the state’s economy, as well, contributing $1.6 billion each year in state and local tax revenue.

    - – –Steven Chu stepping down as Obama’s Energy secretary— -
    – — -Energy Secretary Steven Chu, who oversaw expanded federal support for low-carbon energy and defended it against GOP attacks, announced Friday that he is stepping down.

Chu, in a letter to Energy Department employees, said he would remain with the department at least until the end of February, and perhaps beyond “so that I can leave the Department in the hands of the new Secretary.”

“Serving the country as Secretary of Energy, and working alongside such an extraordinary team of people at the Department, has been the greatest privilege of my life. While the job has had many challenges, it has been an exciting time for the Department, the country, and for me personally,” he wrote.

While he didn’t announce specific plans, Chu said he’s like to return to academic life and move back to the West Coast.

“While I will always remain dedicated to the missions of the Department, I informed the President of my decision a few days after the election that Jean and I were eager to return to California. I would like to return to an academic life of teaching and research, but will still work to advance the missions that we have been working on together for the last four years,” Chu writes.

President Obama thanked Chu in a statement Friday and said the outgoing secretary “brought to the Energy Department a unique understanding of both the urgent challenge presented by climate change and the tremendous opportunity that clean energy represents for our economy.”

    — -One Video Destroys the Republican Myth that Their Opposition to Obama Isn’t Racial – –

    - – - —-In this video, the evangelical, Koch-backed, tea party Arkansas state senator Jason Rapert explains why minorities like President Obama don’t represent his America.

    Video:

While addressing a tea party rally in 2011, Rapert said, “I hear you loud and clear, Barack Obama. You don’t represent the country that I grew up with. And your values is not going to save us. We’re going to take this country back for the Lord. We’re going to try to take this country back for conservatism. And we’re not going to allow minorities to run roughshod over what you people believe in!”

This is Republican politics in a nutshell. Rapert isn’t some random person at a rally, so the one bad apple theory that conservatives love to use doesn’t apply. This is an elected state senator. His fellow Republicans nominated him for office. Rapert is the perfect embodiment of the three forces that currently make up the base of the Republican Party. He is an evangelical who is backed by the Koch brothers, who is pushing the state’s extreme anti-abortion legislation, who also happens to be filled with anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Rapert is literally the model Republican. – - –
    – - -SNIP – - -

——Republicans can change the window dressing, but they can’t hide the rotten, intolerant heart of their party. At least Rapert was honest. Republicans don’t just hate Obama because he is a Democrat. They hate him because he is a minority who represents the changing face of America.

POU I know it’s late so I’ll put this out again tomorrow.
There is so much out there compared to when I was a kid re: Black History and I want to share some of everything with my almost 6yo daughter. Of course I began with “We make history all year long but since this is the set aside, here goes.” I explained this is because February is Frederick Douglas Birthday. She asked “who’s he?” I gave a short synopsis then I read this morning’s diary. Thank you.

She likes movies and most explain better than I can. So (no Disney tonight) after the Image Awards (sorry I missed Live Chat) I began with the YouTube “When Black Ruled the World.” Ancient Egypt, Black women in antiquity etc in language she understood. While she picked up a few things, most went by her. That’s OK.I’ll show it again, either the same or in a different form/voice as she ages.

My question to you parents and educators is what books/movies would you recommend. I try for age appropriate, but as you see I sometimes reach too far ahead of her. I want to work from Ancients to our arrival in America to today.

As an older parent of a young child, there’s so much I want to present to her and feel there’s so little time. I’m open to suggestion.

    • PBomb

Unfortunately alot of our history isn’t shared in a form that makes it easier for young kids to understand. Most of the real history, you won’t get until you are older.

Here are some recommended from a friend of mine who is a teacher.

Setting the Record Straight: American History in Black & White

What Color Is My World?: The Lost History of African-American
      Inventors by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

100 African-Americans Who Shaped American History (100 Series)

As for African history for children is very narrow. it all about Egyptian Pharoahs, Mummies, and living in the Serengeti.

I hope those books help somewhat.

      • TyrenM

        Thanks PBomb.
