Re-posting from the morning thread: Does anyone else find it really strange that MTV decides to change up their VMA schedule and broadcast the same night that PBO is scheduled to give his speech? I hear that there’s a real tug of war trying to get performers to come to either event. Would they have ever dared to do this in front of Romney’s speech last night?

Though I’m not entirely convinced that Eastwood isn’t a dem mole, I agree with this comment from Balloon Juice:

out under a huge backdrop of the Western gunslinger. He starts a
monologue vs. ‘the punk.’ (Do you feel lucky, punk? Well do you?)
The punk, the empty chair, the empty suit, responds by telling Romney,
‘Go fuck yourself.’ Clint scolds Obama and leads the crowd in a
chant, “Go ahead. Make my day.” At which point, as we all know,
offstage, Clint would then shoot the punk and kill him.

This was a very public, very deeply mythical/semiotic imaginative
enactment of violence against the sitting President of the US. It was
a post-modern lynching, black-faced dehumanization. I think Obama got
exactly what was going on and that’s why he responded with such force.

Personally, I am disgusted by it. There is an evil afoot in America
today. It is essential that we stand firm against it.

Representative Paul D. Ryan used his convention speech on Wednesday to fault President Obama for failing to act on a deficit-reduction plan that he himself had helped kill. He chided Democrats for seeking $716 billion in Medicare cuts that he too had sought. And he lamented the nation’s credit rating — which was downgraded after a debt-ceiling standoff that he and other House Republicans helped instigate.

And Mitt Romney, in his acceptance speech on Thursday night, asserted that President Obama’s policies had “not helped create jobs” and that Mr. Obama had gone on an “apology tour” for America. He also warned that the president’s Medicare cuts would “hurt today’s seniors,” claims that have already been labeled false or misleading.

The two speeches — peppered with statements that were incorrect or incomplete — seemed to signal the arrival of a new kind of presidential campaign, one in which concerns about fact-checking have been largely set aside.

To be frank, that a national campaign could announce in advance an intent to simply run on lies and not be “dictated” to by factcheckers is a huge indictment of the national media and the ways in which that institution has failed the country. That said, it’s heartening that Ryan was called out so heavily for his lies, and that Mittens’ night of triumph turned into a massive fail and Republican self-parody. If the press really ups the call-outs of the Romney/Ryan mendacity, it would do much to restore their own credibility.

More lackluster lunar news: Blue moons aren’t actually blue, either. Nobody’s even sure where that azure appellation came from. Or what the blue moon may portend as they are considered good luck to some, very bad luck to others. Either way, it seems appropriate that the memorial for recently deceased Neil Armstrong, the moon’s first human visitor, will be on the same day.

Evening thread is up

Hola POU!

This is just a quick pop in because I’m hosting the familia this weekend but I had a few things to share.

I went to the big ‘groceria’ because I needed big stuff to feed lots of people. I ran into a woman I used to work with that I had not seen since I retired. We were not close. She was a bit of a gorgon, harsh, not unfair but not a bit diplomatic either and not approving of “friendships in the work place”. She looked me up & down & said:

“You look good. (Gracias, I think) Family doing well? (I started to reply & then she said…) You’re a Democrat (fixing me with her laser eye) What did you think of the Republican convention?” Before I could really think I said: “In one word or two”

She laughed (I didn’t know she had that capacity) & proceeded to go into one of the funniest monologues about the RNC, their candidates & Clint Eastwood that I have heard outside professional comedy. We were both laughing so hard. I wish I had a tape recorder because there is no way I could reproduce what she said.

Upshot is that she is also working for OFA & plans to go out for Rich Carmona, our candidate for Kyl’s seat. We are going to meet up because Sis & I are walking for him too. Dang! I always thought she was a Republican. You never know.
