Tea party groups work to remove names from Ohio voter rolls
Activists say they’re challenging some names to ensure ‘election integrity.’ Others say it’s an effort to suppress the votes of likely Obama supporters.

CINCINNATI — Lori Monroe, a 40-year-old Democrat who lives in central Ohio, was startled a few weeks ago to open a letter that said a stranger was challenging her right to vote in the presidential election.

Monroe, who was recovering from cancer surgery, called the local election board to protest. A local tea party leader was trying to strike Monroe from the voter rolls for a reason that made no sense: Her apartment building in Lancaster was listed as a commercial property.

“I’m like, really? Seriously?” Monroe said. “I’ve lived here seven years, and now I’m getting challenged?”
Monroe’s is one of at least 2,100 names that tea party groups have sought to remove from Ohio’s voter rosters.

The only way this classification would make sense is that the trash is picked up not by a public service but by a private company, which most multi-unit buildings across the country do. So, they are literally looking at someone’s trash to determine her eligibility? Or is she just a white woman they had to throw into the mix to show it’s not racist?

      • nellcote

I think they’re just going through public records. It may be listed as commercial for tax purposes. It may even have stores on the first floor with apt. above which could make it a commercial property.

    - – —The EARLY VOTING — STATES:- —

    - – — And they’re voting!- -

    - – - –Voters in Iowa have their first chance to cast ballots in the presidential election Thursday, marking the first battleground state to begin in-person early voting.

Idaho, South Dakota, New Jersey, Vermont and Maine all began in-person early voting earlier this month.

    - – - -Ohio, a key battleground, begins early voting next week, while other key states like Nevada, Wisconsin and Florida begin early voting in October.

Depending on state law, early voting can either be done in-person, through the mail or through an absentee ballot. Some states require an excuse for absentee voting while others are moving toward no-excuse absentee balloting. Military personnel are able to vote by email.

The latest poll, released in mid-September, showed President Barack Obama with a slight edge in the battle for Iowa’s six electoral votes. The NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll showed Obama with 50% of likely Iowa voters, compared to 42% who back Romney.

Pa. GOP Pollster: Bain Ads Worked

Pollster Jim Lee of Susquehanna Research, a Pennsylvania-based firm that frequently polls for the state’s Republican Party, said on a conference all with reporters that Democratic attacks on GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s record as CEO of Bain Captial have made a big difference in his state.

“I think the Bain Capital ads that the president’s run and that his super PACs have run have stopped some of Mitt Romney’s growth in the Western part of the state, with working class voters and our polling is showing that the race is tighter out there in Southwestern PA with these blue-collar Reagan democrats that have been paying attention to the ads and the race is more competitive there for the president than it would normally be if you look at the McCain numbers from four years ago,” Lee said, as reported by Politico. “So that’s an area of the state where I would say the president’s message that he better understands the middle class is resonating and represents a potential problem for Mitt Romney.”

A World First: Turning Sewage Into Hydrogen Fuel

The world’s first sewage-powered hydrogen fueling station is now open. Drivers of hydrogen-fueled cars can exit the 405 freeway at Euclid Avenue in Orange County, California and fill up with converted sewage waste that offers the equivalent of 70 miles per gallon. The fueling station is located at the Orange County Sanitation District’s wastewater treatment plant in Fountain Valley.

“This is a paradigm shift,” said National Fuel Cell Research Center director Scott Samuelsen on opening day, August 19. “We’ll be truly fuel-independent and no longer held hostage by other countries.”

“This is the epitome of sustainability,” said Samuelsen. “We’re taking an endless stream of human waste and transforming it to transportation fuel and electricity. This is the first time this has ever been done.”

Finding Health After Letting Go Of Hate

In 1939, Jessie Lee Bond died. His death certificate says he drowned accidentally, but his family has always maintained that he was lynched after an argument with white shop owners — shot and thrown into the river.

No one has ever been charged with his death.

Decades later, his now-91-year-old brother, Charlie Morris, told StoryCorps in Memphis, Tenn., that he was at school when he was called down to the office and told that his brother had been murdered.

Morris says that all he wanted was to get revenge. He went to his grandmother’s house. He was crying and carrying a revolver. His grandmother begged him not to go.

Georgia Power makes a big bet on solar

Georgia Power plans to invest heavily in new energy production. Specifically, up to 210 megawatts of solar by 2017…. [The company], based in Atlanta, submitted plans to regulators to buy 70 megawatts of capacity a year starting in 2015, according to a statement yesterday.

If approved, the Advanced Solar Initiative would be the largest voluntary purchase of solar energy by an investor-owned utility in the U.S., Georgia Power said. Utilities in some other states are required to buy electricity generated from renewable sources.[....] Before Georgia Power moves forward, the Georgia Public Service Commission has to approve the expansion plan.

Suspicious voter registration forms found in 10 Florida counties

WASHINGTON — Florida elections officials said Friday that at least 10 counties have identified suspicious and possibly fraudulent voter registration forms turned in by a firm working for the Republican Party of Florida, which has filed an election fraud complaint with the state Division of Elections against its one-time consultant.

The controversy in Florida — which began with possibly fraudulent forms that first cropped up in Palm Beach County — has engulfed the Republican National Committee, which admitted Thursday that it urged state parties in seven swing states to hire the firm, Strategic Allied Consulting. The RNC paid the company at least $3.1 million — routed through the state parties of Florida, Nevada, Colorado, North Carolina and Virginia — to register voters and run get out the vote operations. Wisconsin and Ohio had not yet paid the firm for get-out-the-vote operations it was contracted to do.

Gender discrimination in compensation has been illegal in the United States since the passage of the 1963 Equal Pay Act. But in video provided by Sen. - – –Obama’s Judges Are Confirmed More Than Three Times Slower Than Reagan’s Judges- –

    - – - -Over at Slate, Doug Kendall breaks down just how badly President Obama’s judicial nominees have been treated due to filibusters led by one or more Senate Republicans. “The average confirmation time for uncontroversial circuit court nominees rose from 64.5 days under Reagan to 227.3 days under Obama. . . . Similarly, the average waiting time for uncontroversial district court nominees increased from 69.9 days under Reagan to 204.8 days under President Obama. And the number of district court nominees who wait more than 200 days has doubled from George W.’s time to Obama’s.” Kendall uses the Congressional Research Service’s definition of an uncontroversial nominee to reach these numbers, which is a nominee who receives “little or no opposition when votes are actually cast in the Senate Judiciary Committee and on the Senate floor.”

While the rate of judicial confirmations declined steadily since the Reagan Administration, President Obama’s judges have still been singled out for significantly worse treatment than any of his recent predecessors:

The Washington Post And The Emergence Of Post-Truth Journalism

Welcome to the age of post-truth journalism.

Glenn Kessler, the resident fact checker at The Washington Post, took Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney to task last month for continuing to accuse President Obama of going on an “apology tour,” writing with clear exasperation: “Despite earning Four Pinocchios for months, Romney keeps saying this.”

Ralph Reed (R-acist) should not be on any platform

Chris Christie (Round ass aka Crispy Creame Donuts) should be in NY disbursing funds to homeowners, reducing NJ 9.9% unemployment rate and exercising before he has a heart attack.

Ed Rendell (Bain ad not working) is not a democrat anymore.. he is an asshat just working for a paycheck

      Katty Kay — who

Chuck Todd (I have no background as a journalist so I overcompensate) has no incite to present so shutup

Richard Engel – Come help us make Foreign Policy an issue.. lets make the Libya issue big and try to give cover to Bibi that Iran is 2 wks from a “bomb” just like we did Iraq. Lets forget Isreal’s own report says sanctions are working or that since 1979 we have been hearing Iran is getting a bomb. Lets play the middle east is on fire alert while pretending it has not always been on fire.

That’s unfair to Richard Engel, he’s a really good reporter on the ME particularly Egypt.

Though I take your point on the motive to have him on MTP.

        • Miranda

I think this is the guy that was supposed to be Romney’s foreign policy adviser until the teavangelicals got wind of his “gayness” and forced Romney to drop him, not the reporter (not sure but I think that’s it)

        • lamh35

I do like Richard Engel, but I’ve been watching his reports lately and I think MSNBC should seriously think about making Richard Engel take some vacation time. The times I’ve seen him usually on Maddow or Tweety, he’s seemed IDK off a little bit. IDK, I think he’s the ONLY foreign correspondent MSNBC has and it’s beginning to show I think. He seemed more strained.

I think he needs a break and some fresher perspective needs to be given a chance to shine.

    - – - -Obama Versus Romney: Everything You Need To Know About Where The Candidates Stand On Energy Policy- – -

    - – - — -Clean energy is an important part of the economy of Colorado, which is the location of the first presidential debate on October 3rd.

Colorado’s robust wind industry and 70,000 jobs in green goods and services could suffer if the Production Tax Credit for wind isn’t extended by the end of 2012. The presidential candidates differ on this, as well as other energy issues. Hopefully the Denver debate, scheduled to focus on the economy, will also address energy policies so vital to Colorado and the nation.

    - – — -SNIP- – -

President Barack Obama’s first term featured the adoption of essential toxic and carbon pollution reduction measures to protect public health. In addition, he modernized fuel-economy standards for the first time in two decades, which also helped the auto industry; invested in energy efficiency and renewable electricity; and created tens of thousands of jobs.

Gov. Mitt Romney’s energy agenda couldn’t be more different. He would undo new safeguards from mercury, carcinogens, soot, and smog from industrial sources. He opposes the improved fuel-economy standards, and would continue and expand tax breaks for big oil companies, while openly disparaging clean energy and investments in wind power.

    - – — – -SNIP _ – -

Below is a more detailed direct comparison of their positions on the most visible energy challenges facing the nation. Following this chart is documentation on the candidates’ positions:

High Expectations for Romney in Debate

Michelle Cottle: “Romney may be a good debater. He may even be a great debater. But at this point his team has fumbled the expectations game to the point where the governor will need to perform at a level well above anything we’ve seen from him to date if he wants to pull off the “W.” Just holding his own against the president — often a challenger’s primary hurdle — won’t change the game, and, at this point, a game changer is what people are demanding.”

    • nellcote

I didn’t pay much attention to the gooper primary debates but I keep hearing how Rmoney did so well in them. What I remember is that he was ok for the most part but the only one he did really well in, he fired his debate coach right after for being gay.

      • goldenstar

I didn’t know that the guy was the debate coach. OH, Lord.

      • RinaX

It was the foreign policy they axed for being gay. He fired the debate coach because he got too much praise for prepping Romney for the one debate where he sounded competent.

Personally and with nothing but gut feeling, I suspect that Romney will do fine, but not well enough to matter. I keep going back to what I’ve said in the past. I think people still underestimate Obama’s debating skills. The always bring up the Philly debate with Hilary which from then on influenced all his other debates with Hilary…Obama sexist towards Hilary and of course the PUMA phenomenon. Then the “that one” with McCain, but in those cases all the punditry scored those debates for McCain with the exception of the “that one” debate. And low and behold when non-Village idiots were asked to score the debate, Obama won them all.

    • nellcote

I’m really hoping TeaNN brings back the audience dials for the debates. It was hilarious when the pundits all said the exact opposite of the audience.

    Not Worried About the Debates
    by BooMan

Personally, I am not very worried about the debates. People like Joe Biden and he’s a pretty good debater. He probably had the best line of the 2008 debates when he came up with that thing about Guiliani, a noun, a verb, and 9/11. He did a great job against Palin in what was frankly an otherworldly and starbursty situation. As for the presidential debates, the last two shouldn’t be a problem. The second debate is a town hall forum with a Long Island audience of “undecided” voters. That’s home field territory for Obama. The last debate is on foreign policy, where it will be nearly impossible for Romney to make any progress on discussing the economy. It’s the first debate that will focus exclusively on domestic issues that offers Romney his chance to shine. Except, you know, he wants to destroy Medicare and take away your home mortgage deduction to finance a tax break on rich people and corporations.
    Are you worried?

Ann Romney: If elected, “mental well-being” Mitt’s biggest challenge
    By Lindsey Boerma /
    CBS News/ September 28, 2012, 6:14 PM

    [...]

Asked what her primary worry would be should her husband succeed in defeating President Obama on Nov. 6, Mrs. Romney replied, “You know, I think my biggest concern, obviously, would just be for his mental well-being.”

“I have all the confidence in the world in his ability, in his decisiveness and his leadership skills, in his understanding of the economy, in his understanding of what’s missing right now in the economy – you know, pieces that are missing to get this jumpstarted,” she continued. “So for me I think it would just be the emotional part of it.”

    [...]

Mrs. Romney told KTVN she hasn’t been a part of debate preparations, as she and her family members have been campaigning separately. She also revealed that she had “minor surgery on her right hand” last week to remove a small cyst.

So Halperin is as much as shill for Romney as the next person, so what’s his bag on this statement about “giving” POTUS the edge. Maybe Halperin’s just hedging his bets, or he’s heard something, or he’s helping to play up the expectations game for his friends at the Romney camp. Espcecially, since I’ve seen in almost every darn interview and segment he’s done on MSNBC that he always tries to go out of hi way to say gotta win this, maybe the Romney camp said, hey, “stop it! you’re putting the expectation too high”.

Now all of a suddent he says this:

If I was going to give the edge to one of them it’d be the President, simply because, between his debates with then-Senator Clinton and his debates against John McCain, he’s not going to have that hard-swallow moment when he’s out there dealing with the pressure.

The President is well aware of everything Mitt Romney is going to try to say and if Mitt Romney succeeds in getting off a critique of the President — that he’s been a failure or that he doesn’t tell the truth — you can bet that the President is going to have a pretty good comeback. Because almost every accusation that Mitt Romney can make, the President can make a counter accusation on the same point. It’s that moment, if Romney pulls it off, I am confident the President will come back. Can Romney then respond again in an effective way? We’ve never seen him do that.

Obama Blocks Chinese Firm From Wind-Farm Projects

President Barack Obama on Friday took the rare step of blocking foreign investment in a U.S. company, invoking national-security concerns to prevent a firm owned by two Chinese nationals from acquiring four wind-farm projects in Oregon.

It marked the first time in 22 years that a U.S. president blocked a foreign acquisition in such a manner.

The firm, Ralls Corp., had sued the U.S. government to try to allow the acquisition to proceed. But the White House said Friday the wind-farm sites are all within or near restricted air space at the Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility Boardman in Oregon.

The U.S. government trains low-level attack squadrons at the range, which also is a test site for drones. The U.S. Navy raised concerns several months ago and a governmental panel recommended the deal be blocked.

I’ve been out all day. I just left you an answer to your question on the morning thread about PBO & Uni interview.

      • nellcote

Saw it. Thanks so much! Glad to see that I’m not the only one that thought Jorge was unduly “intense” in his questioning of PBO. I was surprised to read the other day that Jorge is brother to the 2 Florida-R congresscritters. I never put that together before.

        • Aquagranny911

Jorge’s story is interesting. He’s a Mexican immigrant but not a poor boy. His family had some $$$ & influence. Jorge got in political trouble in Mexico when he was young so came to the US on a student visa & the rest was easy. He got a lot of early breaks.

He has not had to do stoop work in the fields or grovel for a visa. So his uber focus on immigration was just a bit phoney. Even though I like him I think he is a rico with more in common with the GOP than Dems.

Despite the grilling, our PBO did a stellar job of speaking directly to Latinos & they were listening. I think many were more impressed with him for standing so well than if he had been given a ‘softer’ interview.

          • nellcote

I’ve noticed that immigration seems to be his “issue”. The latina pundits I see on msnbc tend to say that jobs/economy and healthcare are the top issues. Not to discount immigration but just that it’s not #1

          • Aquagranny911

Nailed it! Health care, jobs & education are top priorities & not necessarily in that order depending on who you talk to at the time.

One thing that has been hurtful to the Latino communities is the fallacy that they don’t care about education. They care a lot. They just have not been organized enough or had anyone interested enough to meet the real needs of their kiddos in many schools.
Education is important & they know this if they want their children to succeed and they do.

Health care is important because if you work some of the crap jobs that so many of them do you have no health insurance. In the last two years I have not talked to one Latino that talked smack about the ACA. So many are already getting some benefits & hoping for more.

Jobs/economy is a big issue because unemployment is still high but it isn’t just a job, any job it is having a job at a wage that your family can actually live on.

Latino issues are pretty much the same issues of all Americans.

        • goldenstar

I think that you are referring to Jose Diaz-Balart on Telemundo. The Univision anchor is Jorge Ramos.

    – — –An estimated 4,800 people will receive care from a free four-day Los Angeles health clinic next week, The Lead Type reports. The clinic will run from next Thursday to Sunday to provide a variety of health services — including immunizations, women’s health screenings, dental cleanings, and eye exams — to Americans who don’t have medical insurance and can’t usually access this type of care:

Some people began lining up as early as Friday to ensure they obtain a wristband, which will be required for admission to the clinic. Distribution of the wristbands is expected to begin at 1 p.m.

Care Harbor has run several similar clinics in the Los Angeles area over the past few years. A four-day event last October at the Sports Arena was attended by about 5,000 people.

Medical practitioners who take part in the event volunteer their time and services. Care Harbor officials said they are still looking for additional volunteers for this week’s clinic.

    - – –Pa. GOP Pollster: Bain Ads Worked – –

    — –Pollster Jim Lee of Susquehanna Research, a Pennsylvania-based firm that frequently polls for the state’s Republican Party, said on a conference all with reporters held last week but posted Friday that Democratic attacks on GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s record as CEO of Bain Captial have made a big difference in his state. — – -HAH!!! – - –LOL!!

President Obama leads the race in Pennsylvania by 7.8 percent in the PollTracker Average of all public polling, as Romney visited the state on Friday.

    – - – -Considering most Republicans would rather the average American completely forget how bad the economy was in 2008, lets give the American people a quick history lesson.

We are going to recap the worst one day drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average over the last 25 years and let’s see how many happened in 2008 and 2009?

Over half of the worst days happened in 2008 in a breakdown of the 20 worst days in the last quarter century. – — –BEFORE!! _ – -

    – —Kellyanne Conway, a consultant for U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin (R), compared her client’s fortitude in staying in the race to that of deadly cult leader David Koresh, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Said Conway: “I’ve expressed this to Todd as my client for a while now, I’ve expressed it to him directly. The first day or two where it was like the Waco with the David Koresh situation where they’re trying to smoke him out with the SWAT teams and the helicopters and the bad Nancy Sinatra records. Then here comes day two and you realize the guy’s not coming out of the bunker. Listen, Todd has shown his principle to the voters.”

    – - — -First lady tells students to vote early, volunteer often – –

    – - – - On a college swing Friday in Iowa and Wisconsin, first lady Michelle Obama pushed students to take advantage of early voting laws in their states, warning the election will be close and dosing out some mother-knows-best advice.

“As I tell my children: don’t procrastinate,” she told a crowd of several thousand people inside a basketball arena here at the University of Northern Iowa.

It was a convenient proposition, because a so-called satellite voting station was open — for only one day — in a nearby campus building.

“Right after I’m done speaking I want you all to walk out that main door. Follow the volunteers,” Obama said, adding later that voting early would free supporters to focus on grassroots efforts.

“Multiply yourselves,” she said. “Find five more friends that you know aren’t registered.” – –
