Friday Afternoon Thread: One Chance

The Commander-in-Chief gets one chance to make the right decision.

Let’s just say it: The Republicans are the problem.

Rep. Allen West, a Florida Republican, was recently captured on video asserting that there are “78 to 81” Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party. Of course, it’s not unusual for some renegade lawmaker from either side of the aisle to say something outrageous. What made West’s comment — right out of the McCarthyite playbook of the 1950s — so striking was the almost complete lack of condemnation from Republican congressional leaders or other major party figures, including the remaining presidential candidates.

It’s not that the GOP leadership agrees with West; it is that such extreme remarks and views are now taken for granted.

    Chronicling Mitt’s Mendacity, Vol. XV
By Steve Benen – Fri Apr 27, 2012 3:11 PM EDT.

After winning several more presidential primaries this week, Mitt Romney delivered a speech his campaign billed as the unofficial kickoff of the general election. And while making his pitch as the presumptive Republican nominee, the former governor said President Obama intends to “run a campaign of … distortions.”

I very nearly fell out of my chair. After watching Romney closely for years, I’ve never seen any candidate in either party run a campaign of distortions as shamelessly as this guy, and this claim seemed to take the “I’m rubber, you’re glue” tactic to new levels.

To appreciate the scope of Romney’s distortions, consider the 15th installment of my weekly series, chronicling Mitt’s mendacity.

    1. Romney argued in Pennsylvania earlier this week that President Obama has “apologized for America.”

The fact that Romney continues to repeat this lie every day is pretty depressing.

    2. The Romney campaign argued this week that college tuition costs are going up is because “this president decided to take over the student loan market.”

As a matter of policy, that’s ridiculous, and as a matter of accuracy, it’s completely untrue.

    A Second Term for Obama
    by BooMan
Fri Apr 27th, 2012 at 02:44:51 PM EST

Ruth Marcus is concern-trolling again: Or, maybe she’s trying to reassure the Villagers that Obama isn’t a secret socialist. I can’t even tell the difference anymore. In any case, Ms. Marcus doesn’t think Obama is going to do anything radical in a second term, but she sure wishes he would talk about doing some radically centrist things during the campaign.
Congressional math will constrain Obama for the remainder of his presidency even if he wins a second term and the Dems do better than the historical average in the next midterms. There is no way Obama will ever again have a Congress as compliant as the one he enjoyed in 2009-2010, if you can call that Baucus-Nelson-Lincoln-Landrieu-Lieberman-led Congress “compliant.”

The good old days are over, and our next shot at bold progressive change will come in 2016, when we’ll have a chance to win the presidency again and get back to a 60 vote advantage in the Senate.

There is literally nothing the president or the party or you or I can do to change that reality. It is what it is.

In a second term, however, Obama will be free to make decisions that are politically unpopular. He can be bolder on using the executive branch to address climate change, civil rights, election reform, prison reform, drug enforcement reform, etc. He can stand up to his own party, too, and will likely pursue tax and entitlement reform that liberals will not like.

He will continue to tilt the federal courts to the left, and might make a truly meaningful Supreme Court appointment (or two). He’ll protect the health care, Wall Street, and consumer protection reforms that he’s made. Millions of people will begin receiving subsidies to pay for health insurance or Medicaid, creating a culture of dependency a huge bloc of Democratic voters for the foreseeable future and ending this nonsense about repealing ObamaCare.

Our foreign policies will be protected from the neo-conservatives for four years, and we’ll likely see a period of peace reminiscent of the mid-1990’s.

All-in-all, not what I would wish for, but so much better than what we’ve had and what Romney is offering that it’s not even a close call. Four more years!!

    – – – — If you’re young and you want to start your own business, Mitt Romney’s has some advice from you: Borrow money from your parents. At a “lecture” for students at Otterbein University in Ohio today, Mitt Romney told students that, his friend, Jimmy John, started a business by borrowing $20,000 from his parents at a low interest rate. Romney suggested anyone in the audience could do the same:

This kind of devisiveness, this attack of success, is very different than what we’ve seen in our country’s history. We’ve always encouraged young people: Take a shot, go for it, take a risk, get the education, borrow money if you have to from your parents, start a business.

miranda- – —-“MOVIN’ ON UP NEWS”- – —

    – – – – -Sports
NBA sets mark for most minority coaches
    - – —

    – — – — Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers was a little surprised by the number, though not by the trend.

Fourteen NBA head coaches are black, tying the 30-team league’s own record for the most ever in a U.S. pro league.

“I didn’t even know that it’s half, which is probably a better sign,” Rivers said recently. “I don’t think it’s a big deal any more, especially in our league and I think we probably set the tone in all leagues in that way.”

    He’s right.

The NBA already held the record for most black coaches when it had 14 in 2002. It briefly surpassed that total this season for about 24 hours in March after Mike Woodson was promoted in New York and before Nate McMillan was fired in Portland. McMillian was replaced by Kaleb Canales — who became the first Mexican-American coach.

“I’m glad that it has escalated to the point that it’s at where so many have opportunities, but the NBA with David Stern have been unbelievable as far as minorities getting an opportunity to coach and go into front offices,” Cleveland coach Byron Scott said. “I think the NBA is so much farther ahead than any other major sport.”

Besides Rivers, Scott and Woodson, the NBA’s other black coaches are Mike Brown (Los Angeles Lakers), Avery Johnson (New Jersey), Dwane Casey (Toronto), Paul Silas (Charlotte), Lionel Hollins (Memphis), Tyrone Corbin (Utah), Larry Drew (Atlanta), Alvin Gentry (Phoenix), Monty Williams (New Orleans), Mark Jackson (Golden State) and Keith Smart (Sacramento). A half-dozen will be coaching in the playoffs starting this weekend.

    — – –Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer of San Antonio, Texas says his elderly mother could become one of millions of Americans likely to be barred from participating in this year’s voting process because of newly enacted voter suppression legislation.

At 73 and suffering from Parkinson’s disease he notes, she has no driver’s license, no passport and no concealed handgun license, the only forms of voter identification in the state.Under Texas’ Senate Bill 14, which requires presenting proof of valid photo identification at polling places, Martinez Fischer says she would be “shut out.”

The briefing examined the current landscape of state sponsored voter suppression laws. The Texas representative joined two of the Center’s legal experts on the call who challenged the efficacy and constitutionality of the 24 voting laws and executive actions passing in 17 states, since early 2011, and several others still pending. States in which these laws have passed will comprise 70 percent of the electoral vote in the 2012 election. (New America Media)

I’m beginning to think that part of the Obama campaign strategy to keep pressing on Romney many statements. I know that the MSM are aware of the strategy turn, but I think another aspect of the strategy is to be so precise in their attacks and leaving no “real” room for R-Money and the R-Money millionaires campaign to maneuever. I think it works. Using Romney’s exact quotes to ring his neck is very effective, because unlike R-Money’s campaigns’ decision to distort and out right lie about what Obama actually said/says, the Obama campaign can point out that R-Money campaign is lying and that Obama did not say that. Can R-Money’s campaign really say the same about their client with all the evidence including video, articles, recording, etc that are available. I think they’ll try, but with ALL the gaffes and downright stupid statements from their candidate I just don’t think they will be able to keep up unless Obama, Biden, Axelrod and Ploufe and ‘nem have unforced errors.

Citizens United is the only saving grace R-Money has to even the playing field.

I think that even though the media would do it’s uptmost best to let Romney get away from all the crazy extreme RW BS he spewed due to the primary, but the campaign is so far making it REALLY hard for legitimate MSM to do so by using Romney own words (in the case of Joe Biden on foreign policy) and in the own words of the Romney surrogates.

Case in point: Case in point:

Obama on Ledbetter Act: I Won’t Have To ‘Get Back To You’

Obama was speaking to the Women’s Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. Friday afternoon, and told the audience:

And as long as I’m president, we are going to keep moving forward. You can count on that. You don’t have to take my word on it – you’ve got my signature on it. Because something like standing up for the principle of equal pay for equal work isn’t something I’m going to have to “get back to you on” – it’s the first law I signed.

Speaking of the Joe Biden speech as an example, it was so effective, even Mark “da dick” Halperin couldn’t fix his mouth to make this one “good for Romney”. Which means something since “da dick’s” lips are firmly plastered on R-Money’s ass.

    • Miranda

If it wasn’t for Citizens United, this would be over already. All the voter suppression laws in the world couldn’t help how badly Mittens is doing. He opens his mouth and it might as well be Ebenezer Scrooge talking.

      • Jeremy

And even the Obama campaign is finding ways to get round the voter ID laws by registering voters, mobilizing and providing the proper information.

Money can’t buy you love ask Meg Whitman who spent so much of her own money she still lost badly to old man Jerry Brown.

      • conlakappa

More like Scrooge McDuck. He is a cartoon, isn’t he?

    • Jeremy

Like I said Citizens United gives some edge but it won’t help Romney. Actually I think it will make things worse for him because he is solely depended on it while Obama is not and raising a lot of money and has a full campaign apparatus with a large ground campaign. Romney and the Republicans can only rely on attack ads because Super Pacs are very limited.

      • nellcote

    – — – – -Student loan rate extension passed under threat of veto- — –

    – – – – -The House on Friday passed a Republican version of a bill that would extend the low 3.4 percent rate on government-subsidized student loans, despite pressure from conservative groups to oppose the measure and a veto threat from the White House.

The Republican bill, which passed by a close vote of 215-195, would extend the low interest rate on student loans for one year. Unless Republicans and Democrats can agree on a final bill, the rate for federally subsidized student loans will double this year. Democrats support extending the rate but disagree with the way Republicans want to pay for it.

    – —THIS- – – — ->To make up for the $5.9 billion shortfall that comes with an extension of the low rate, Republicans offered to eliminate the Prevention and Public Health Fund, which was created by the 2010 Affordable Care Act. The White House issued a statement before the vote vowing to veto the Republican House version, guaranteeing that the debate over the legislation will continue.- – – –

    – – —-Earlier this month, ThinkProgress first reported Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) remarks showing distaste for people with large student loans. “I have very little tolerance” for them, Foxx declared on a conservative radio show. Her comments have since been widely criticized, including in a speech by President Obama earlier this week. Rebuild the Dream also began a petition drive to denounce Foxx; in less than two weeks, over 111,000 people have added their names.

    – – – -Ex-Edwards Aide: Donors’ Cash Went into NC House – —

—- -John Edwards’ former aide acknowledged Thursday that much of nearly $1 million in campaign supporters’ cash went to build his North Carolina dream house, not to buy the silence of the presidential candidate’s pregnant mistress.

Andrew Young testified for a fourth straight day at Edwards’ campaign finance fraud trial, peppered with questions from Edwards attorney Abbe Lowell about the money from two donors that flowed into personal accounts controlled by Young and his wife.

Young has said he took secret payments from wealthy donors at Edwards’ direction to help conceal the presidential contender’s affair with Rielle Hunter and keep his 2008 presidential campaign viable.

Young said the checks secretly provided by a then-96-year-old heiress were mixed with the couple’s other house funds, much of which went into renovations and construction of their $1.5 million hilltop house on 10 acres near Chapel Hill, N.C. Young suggested his wife, Cheri, would know more about where all the money went, saying she “is the one who handles the finances in our family.”

Elizabeth Edwards (RIP) but I’m glad you are not here any more to endure this. Send your light and wisdom to your children so they can get through all this with peace & grace.

      This is REAL IMPORTANT!

For profit colleges & universities (think those TV ads) have really targeted our returning vets & their families. They suck up the GI education benefits & get our military into loans & programs beyond what they can do. It has been all about promising everything & really giving little.

OUR good Prez is putting a big stop to that. Thank you, President Obama!

PBO has also quietly been setting up school to work programs with business & community colleges all over the US that will not only benefit our vets but other students as well.

      But Shush…don’t tell the GOP!!!

    – – — In what is becoming a regular event, yet another company has dropped the American Legislative Exchange Council, the corporate front group that helped spread Stand Your Ground gun laws and voter suppression efforts. According to the Center for Media and Democracy, Kaplan, Inc., a for-profit education group owned by the Washington Post Company, has publicly announced that it will not renew its membership. ALEC has come under heavy scrutiny from progressive groups, such as Color of Change, that have been pressuring corporations like State Farm and AT&T to sever ties with the conservative group.
