Why is Bloomberg insisting upon having the marathon?

Staten Island hotel refuses to evict storm refugees for visiting marathoners

The owner of the Staten Island, New York’s Hilton Garden Inn is refusing to evict local refugees from Hurricane Sandy, even though his decision has drawn fire from marathoners who made reservations to stay and run the 43rd annual ING New York City Marathon this weekend.

“How do I tell people who have no place to go, that have no home, no heat, that you have to leave because I have to make room for somebody that wants to run the marathon?” asked hotel owner Richard Nicotra. “I can’t do that,” he said.

This story gut wrenched me. I think she made a bad decision but I did something stupid like that myself during a monsoon. I was 5 months pregnant & decided to cross a flooded street carrying my 18 month old son. The current was fast & above my knees. We almost didn’t make it.

That’s the bitter irony of this. The hardest hit areas in NJ are traditional GOP strongholds. I read yesterday that Limbaugh was not only going in on Christie but the Jersey Shore residents, who in his words are 1 percenters who are trying to get free government money. Some of my co-workers live in those areas and listen to Rush every day without fail. Can’t be a good feeling to hear themselves characterized like that by their idol.

    – —-Reid to Romney: Senate Dems Won’t Work With You– – –

    — – — If Mitt Romney wins the presidency, he will not win cooperation from Senate Democrats, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Friday in his latest and perhaps final shot at a candidate who aides say Reid personally disdains.

In a statement reacting to what he said are Romney’s claims that Senate Democrats will work with him on his agenda, Reid calls Romney a “severe conservative” whose “far-right agenda” Democrats reject.

“Romney’s fantasy that Senate Democrats will work with him to pass his ‘severely conservative’ agenda is laughable. In fact, Mitt Romney’s Tea Party agenda has already been rejected in the Senate,” Reid says, listing GOP policies Romney has embraced that the Senate has voted down, including the budget plans offered by vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, R.-Wis.

Democrats look set to retain control of the Senate. Reid’s statement, while aiming to aid President Obama’s reelection, is a reminder that should Romney win, Senate Democrats will pose a major hurdle to his plans and that Reid’s dislike of Romney, more specifically, would be a problem.

    – – –SNIP- —

“As governor of Massachusetts, he had a terrible relationship with Democrats, cordoning himself off behind a velvet rope instead of reaching out to build relationships,” Reid continued. “And in the near-decade that Mitt Romney has spent running for president, both his words and his actions have shown that pleasing the far right is more important to him than working across the aisle.”

As the Brennan Center for Justice explains in its report out this week, “Disenfranchisement after criminal conviction remains the single most significant barrier to voting in the United States … These voting bans are exceptional among democratic nations. The United States is one of only two countries that disenfranchise large numbers of people for indefinite periods after they have completed their time in prison.” These laws also disproportionately impact African-American men, 13 percent of whom have lost the right to vote nationwide.

    – – — Balance Versus Extremism– –

    – —–EJ Dionne’s endorsement of the president:

This election does not represent a choice between left and right. It represents a choice between balance and a new, extreme form of conservatism. This new conservatism cannot accept any tax increases as part of a deal to reduce the deficit. For all his attempts to sound moderate in the campaign’s closing days, Romney has not altered the response he gave during a Republican-primary debate rejecting a hypothetical deal involving a 10-to-1 ratio between spending cuts and tax increases. This refusal to acknowledge the need for more revenue is a recipe for eviscerating government—and the cuts, as Ryan’s budget shows, would fall disproportionately on programs for Americans with the lowest incomes.

The new right has broken with conservatism’s past—and our country’s most constructive traditions—by adopting a new and radical individualism that largely ignores our country’s gift for community.

    – — — –Facing low approval ratings and constant Republican criticism as his re-election campaign starts up, President Barack Obama challenged Congress on Thursday night to put the good of the nation over political benefit and pass a huge jobs plan he proposed.

In a speech to a joint session of Congress, Obama told the legislators to “stop the political circus and actually do something to help the economy” by quickly approving the $447 billion package of measures so he can sign it into law.

“The people of this country work hard to meet their responsibilities. The question tonight is whether we’ll meet ours,” Obama said to applause. “The question is whether, in the face of an ongoing national crisis, we can stop the political circus and actually do something to help the economy. The question is whether we can restore some of the fairness and security that has defined this nation since our beginning.”

    – — Obama also told legislators that they should quickly pass his plan, called the American Jobs Act.

“There should be nothing controversial about this piece of legislation,” the president said. “Everything in here is the kind of proposal that’s been supported by both Democrats and Republicans — including many who sit here tonight. And everything in this bill will be paid for. Everything.”

Gov. Rick Scott won’t extend early voting through Sunday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday rejected calls to extend early-voting hours through Sunday despite reports of record turnouts and long lines of voters at poll sites statewide.

The League of Women Voters on Thursday joined a call by the chairman of Florida’s Democratic Party for Scott to extend early voting through Sunday.

“The League of Women Voters of Florida,” state president Deirdre Macnab said, “is extremely concerned that such long waits are discouraging to voters whose schedules and or physical conditions cannot accommodate these types of delays.”

Asked Thursday night whether he would extend early voting through Sunday, the Republican governor said no.

I hope the folks in Florida organize the longest line in history to bring attention to Scott’s sorry ass.

“Any voter in line when the polls close – during early voting and on Election Day – will be allowed to cast a ballot,” said Chris Cate, spokesman for the secretary of state.

Keep them open until 3 am.

    Hola Peeps!

I am taking a break before I pull my hair & scream! I’ve been up since 5AM so I could go to early Mass again with my brother…Dia de Los Muertos…I lit the candles & made the ofrendas for those who have made the next journey. I hope they save some for me because I may need them soon!

Since then I have been calling people who received early ballots and are still clutching them in their sweaty little fists. Some conversations went like this:

Me: “Hola, good morning! I am A____calling for President Obama. Have you completed & mailed out your early ballot?

Estupido voter: Si, I have it right here in the envelop all filled out.

Me: Today is the last day of early voting. You must now drop your ballot at one of the early polling stations so your signature can be verified & your vote can be counted on November 6. If you mail it now or take it to the polls on Tuesday your vote may be counted last because your signature MUST be verified first. Would you like a ride to the polling station today?

Estupido voter: Maybe, I guess so.

Me: Bueno, stand by & someone will phone you within the hour to arrange a ride for you.

My best conversation involved a woman who told me she had not filled out her ballot because her nino got jelly on it & she didn’t know what to do. She was practically in tears but I got her sorted out. Gracias!

Most did say they had mailed their ballots. I pray that was not one of those “The check is in the mail” things. I have to hope they did mail them.

If the Zombie Apocalypse occurs, I think some of my peeps will be the first brain eaters because their need is great. I can say this after some of the conversations I have had today.

I did my best but I think I have bitten my tongue through to keep from going full raving Latina!

miranda- — -THIS is all that I could find- –so far- -on the —“REID- —TWITT-BEATDOWN!!”

    – – – –** August 8, 2012 ** Why Harry Reid Checkmates Mitt Romney – –

    – — –In the world of chess being too aggressive at the outset, advancing too far, is perilous. For Romney, his refusal to acknowledge his aggressive financial engineering and tax avoidance strategies could indeed result in an open convention. One in which the party is free to forward a higher quality candidate.

Here is a list of the facts surrounding the Reid Romney dispute:

    1) On July 20, 2012 I published a blog post noting for the first time that Mitt Romney has not filed the required 990-T form and paid the related UBIT tax with his 2010 tax return, nor has he made this required filing in prior years. This filing is essential for tax exempt accounts, including IRAs, if they contain related business interests, what I call leveraged transactions in Romney’s case since Bain is an LBO firm.

Remarkably, these 990-T filings are all publicly available by law. One need only write to the IRS, specify the taxpayer, and within 30 days you will receive a reply if these 990-T filings have been made. My request regarding Romney applied from 1992-2011, 19 years, and the IRS confirmed none had been filed.

    2) On July 31, 2012 Harry Reid made a claim to the Huffington Post that Romney paid no taxes for more than 10 years. While Romney may claim that he paid “lots of taxes,” Reid is technically correct in that he has failed to pay taxes on the largest share of his wealth, what is believed to be an IRA worth as much as $100 million, for more than 10 years.

    – – –Still lookin’. . . .:>)

    [Gotta “hit da road”.- — C U SOON!! :>)♥]

    • nellcote

      and this:

Reid’s ideological differences with Romney represent deeper fault lines that run through American Mormonism. While the vast majority of U.S. Mormons are politically conservative, the church also contains a small but growing group of progressives, many of whom take defiant delight in parking their Obama bumper-stickered mini-vans in their church parking lots. Reid is a sort of folk hero to these types of liberal Latter-day Saints, and has long used his position to argue that Democrats have an important place in the faith.

In keeping with his very public mingling of faith and politics, Reid bristles at the notion that Mormonism should somehow be off limits in this race, Manley said.

“[For Reid] it’s no different than raising how Ayn Rand, for instance, relates to Catholic teachings,” Manley said. “The fact is you can’t square Ayn Rand with the Gospel of Christ.”

          • nellcote

Dick Smothers’ character, Senator, is partly based on Nevada Senator Harry Reid, who was chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission. The scene in which Sam Rothstein is denied a license by the Nevada Gaming Commission is based on a December 1978 hearing when Harry Reid was the commission’s chairman; some of Reid’s statements are used in Smothers’ dialogue.

    James Wolcott weighs in:

It says something about the way things are tilting that in the last couple weeks the rightwing bloggers and Fox News banshees have gone rabid with Nate Silver-bashing and all-Benghazi all-the-time. It’s as if they know things are tipping against them and want to scapegoat the messenger–Silver, who has emerged as the most closely followed top young ace stat-soothsayer in the ’12 election–and hammer away about Benghazi because they’ve used up all their Kenyan Muslim Marxist ammo and are now down to their last billyclub. This, from pundits and conservative personalities who exaggerated and lied us into a disastrous invasion of Iraq over WMDs that weren’t there, the most immoral, unconscionable, and calamitous blunder of our generation (and, yes, many liberals were culpable too), and now they want to get high and righteous about Benghazi (which they would have shrugged off had it happened under Reagan or Bush)? Fuck them. I would say the same regarding those sliming of Nate Silver except that I met him once years ago, before his ascension in a cone of white light to the Times, and he’s a cool customer who’s much tougher than his troll critics think and dedicated to being as accurate as possible, so he doesn’t need defending from me.

But what the hell, it’s Halloween, his ad hominem detractors can go fuck off too.

I confess that as a liberal Democrat I’m amazed that Obama isn’t 20 points ahead in the race. Yes, he had that one lousy debate, but what a truly vapid, uninspired candidate Mitt Romney is, standing for nothing, a glistening shrine to hackitude. Romney’s been compared to Nixon in his mendacious duplicitous insincerity but Romney’s actually worse: Nixon knew stuff, he did his homework, not like Romney, who has a vacancy sign on his brow whenever he’s forced to discuss an issue–usually foreign-policy related–that he’s had six or seven years to study up on if he hadn’t been such a complacent, incurious sumbitch too busy admiring his fucking hair and winning smile in the mirror. I really thought he’d be smart enough not to glue himself to Tea Party positions that become a mite uncomfortable in the general election, such as hey let’s send disaster relief back to the states or better yet privatize it, but no, he pandered like a fan dancer. His shape-shifting about the Detroit bailout couldn’t be more spazzy. And he’s the best the Republicans had! Santorum, Cain, Rick Perry, et al are even more ignorant than Romney, and Newt Gingrich is a yeast infection. In 2016, assuming Romney loses, the Conservative Base isn’t going to want Chris Christie, they’re going to want Allen West spraying the air with machine-gun fire, like Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos.

And he’s the best the Republicans had! Santorum, Cain, Rick Perry, et al are even more ignorant than Romney, and Newt Gingrich is a yeast infection.

So ABC has a new age “All in the Family” show? Tim Allen is the Archie Bunker in Last Man Standing. In the first show his daughter is voting for the first time and deciding who to cast her vote for. He’s the cold conservative pushing for Romney and his other 2 daughters are liberals. I’m pretty sure based on this episode the wing nuts are gonna be upset. LOL

Obama orders fuel to be sent to areas hit by Sandy
    Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 | 4:50 p.m.

The Obama administration is ordering the purchase of up to 12 million gallons of unleaded fuel and up to 10 million gallons of diesel fuel for distribution in areas impacted by Superstorm Sandy to supplement private sector efforts.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said Friday that President Barack Obama has directed the Defense Logistics Agency to handle the purchase of the fuel. It will be transported by tanker trucks and distributed throughout New York, New Jersey and other communities impacted by the storm.

FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said the fuel purchase is part of efforts by governments, private organizations and others to help the region recover from the weather disaster.

This purchase is in addition to an emergency diesel fuel loan from the Energy Department’s Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve.

Iraq war contractor ordered to pay $85 million

A jury has ordered an American military contractor to pay $85 million after finding it guilty of negligence for illnesses suffered by a dozen Oregon soldiers who guarded an oilfield water plant during the Iraq war.

The jury deliberated for just two days before reaching a decision Friday against Kellogg Brown and Root.

The company was ordered to pay $6.25 million to each of the soldiers in punitive damages and $850,000 in noneconomic damages.

The suit was the first concerning soldiers’ exposure to a toxin at a water plant in southern Iraq that they were assigned to guard. The soldiers said they suffer from respiratory ailments after their exposure to sodium dichromate, and they fear that a carcinogen the toxin contains _ hexavalent chromium _ could cause cancer later in life.

No doubt the money awarded will be appealed but it’s good to finally see those assholes at KBR in court.

    – – —Mitt Romney Ignores Troops, Vets And Foreign Policy In ‘Closing Argument’ Speech – – – –

    – — –Mitt Romney delivered what he reportedly dubbed his “closing argument” speech today in Wisconsin and while he rattled off a series of attacks on the Obama administration for various alleged failures, the former Massachusetts governor entirely ignored foreign policy. Actually not entirely. Romney did repeat his “wrongheaded” claim that he would label China a currency manipulator upon taking office, an idea that pretty much no one thinks is a good one.

It’s not entirely surprising that Romney had nothing to say today about veterans, the U.S. military, the war it is engaged in in Afghanistan or any other national security issue (recall he didn’t mention the troops or the war in Afghanistan in his RNC speech). He and his campaign has gone to great lengths to avoid talking foreign policy throughout the campaign.- -SNIP —

–THIS – –> Obama delivered his “closing argument” speech yesterday, also in Wisconsin. “So long as I’m Commander-in-Chief, we will pursue our enemies with the strongest military the world has ever known,” he said. “But it’s time to use the savings from ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to start paying down our debts here and rebuilding America.”

—- –Rufus Friday Disagrees With Editorial Board

The publisher and president of the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader became one of few prominent African Americans to publicly support Mitt Romney for president Sunday when the paper’s editorial board disclosed that Rufus M. Friday disagreed with its endorsement of President Obama.

“. . . He chose not to use his power as publisher to overrule the majority,” the Herald-Leader’s endorsement editorial said of Friday. “His primary reasons for supporting Romney are laid out here:

“President Barack Obama simply has not made good on his biggest promise: to change the culture in Washington. During his presidency, the Capitol remained mired in partisan squabbles while a host of challenges have not been adequately addressed. . . .”

Jim Romenesko wrote Wednesday on his media blog, “Editorial page editor Vanessa Gallman tells Romenesko readers that there are five people on the McClatchy paper’s editorial board and that Friday ‘was the only supporter of Romney and did try to sway others.’

Romney won’t show us his tax returns, he profited off of the auto bailout and stashed the funds in tax free shelters, he won’t tell us his economic plans because it might hurt his campaign, and he won’t take questions from the press. – –

This made me so mad! Postal carrier in some part of Northern California trashing completed mail in ballots.

To track your vote by mail ballot:

If you live and vote in Alameda County track your mailed in ballot here:

If you live and vote in Contra Costa County track your mailed in ballot here:

If you live outside these 2 counties, please look up your county elections division/registrar of voters and track your ballot.

If your mailed in ballot has still not been received, call and ask for a provisional ballot. Do it now!

Please pass around to ensure that voters know for certain that their mailed in ballots have been received—and have not been junked by some horrid postal guy.

If we claim to be exporting “true Democracy” to other parts of the world, should ours not be of an unassailable standard —and worth imitating–?

    • goldenstar

This is why so many folks do not trust voting by mail. And, you hafta agree….
