King: Republicans force us to act ‘like third-world beggars’ for hurricane relief funds

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) said Friday that his fellow Republicans are making New York’s members of Congress walk around “like third-world beggars” pleading for votes for hurricane relief funds.

“Quite frankly it’s going to be difficult going back and working with people you sit next to and whenever they were in need, we responded immediately,” he said Friday guest hosting a radio interview with Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), first reported by New York Daily News. “Not one member of Congress ever voted against or said one word in opposition to aid going to other states when the money was needed.”

“We’re going around like third-world beggars,” he lamented. “At least, they put us in that position.” King’s staff published his comments on the congressman’s official website.

The debt-ceiling hostage strategy starts to unravel

    By Steve Benen
    Fri Jan 18, 2013 8:42 AM EST

In 2011, the Republicans held the debt ceiling hostage, vowing to crash the economy on purpose unless their unconditional demands were met, and they enjoyed complete unanimity on the right — every GOP lawmaker, pundit, and activist was fully invested in the plan.

In 2013, this is obviously not the case, with a growing number of prominent Republican voices balking at the entire endeavor. Just today, Charles Krauthammer, a prominent conservative pundit, told Republicans they “won’t get” their ransom, they’ll have to “give in” eventually, and they should “forget about forcing tax reform or entitlement cuts or anything major.” Jennifer Rubin added, “The jig is nearly up…. [T]he threat of bumping up against the debt ceiling is not realistic and hence not useful.”

For the first time, it appears this point is not lost on House Republicans.

Rand Paul slams Chris Christie for NRA comments

Rand Paul vs. Chris Christie in a 2016 Republican presidential primary? Paul, a Tea Party favorite, apparently is ready to throw down right now.

The Kentucky senator blasted the New Jersey governor in remarks Friday on Laura Ingraham’s radio show, slamming Christie’s criticisms of the NRA, fellow Republicans, and his persistent call for Superstorm Sandy aid.

Christie on Thursday ripped an NRA ad that mentions President Obama’s daughters, saying it was “reprehensible.” It was just the latest from the blunt-speaking governor, who also lit into House Speaker John Boehner this month for delaying a vote on disaster aid. For starters, Paul said Christie’s NRA comments are an indication that he is “backing down” on the rights of gun owners, according to a blog post by Ingraham’s staff.

I do love it when the goatfiggers start snacking on each other. Who ever said cannibalism was passe? Seems to be the newest food craze for the GOP!

GN posted this article in the earlier thread, but this stood out for me as I hadn’t read about this before:

The GOP will now stage the battle to get the spending cuts it wants around the threat of a government shutdown. Remember, GOP aides have explicitly conceded that instigating a confrontation will be necessary in order to placate House conservatives and Tea Partyers who wanted to flirt with default in order to get their way, but will ultimately be forced to accept the fact that this just ain’t gonna happen. Remember that quote to Politico?

House Speaker John Boehner “may need a shutdown just to get it out of their system,” said a top GOP leadership adviser. “We might need to do that for member-management purposes — so they have an endgame and can show their constituents they’re fighting.”

WTF?!?!? That is the most asanine shit. Its cray cray! WHAT.THE.HELL. “get it out of their system”?? We talking about grown ass people right? RIGHT?

SMH…utterly shameful. We have lunatics with the IQ of a muskrat in our damn Congress.

Jamie Foxx: Spike Lee Was “Irresponsible” With Comments

Jamie Foxx and the director of his latest film, Quentin Tarantino, have taken a lot of heat over the controversial story behind “Django Unchained”. While many say it’s Tarantino’s best work yet, some say the film’s portrayal of slavery and the marketing of “slave dolls” is in poor taste. The latter group includes iconic director Spike Lee, who took to Twitter to give his opinion on the movie and the dolls.

    Read more here…http://www.webpronews.com/jamie-foxx-spike-lee-was-irresponsible-with-comments-2013-01

    • Town

    • Dick Gregory also came for Spike:

“I’ve seen ‘Django Unchained’ 12 times. Never in the history of Hollywood, have they ever made anything that freed the inside of me. The inside of me. I’m 80-years-old, I saw cowboy movies, wasn’t no Black folks in cowboy movies. I’m looking at a Western, plus a love story. To those of you all that see it, you’ll never see a love story about a Black man and a Black woman where it wasn’t some foul sex and foul language, huh. And Spike Lee can’t appreciate that. The little thug ain’t even seen the movie; he’s acting like he White.

So it must be something personal. And all them Black entertainers that know Spike Lee, how you gone attack this man and don’t be attacking them … and then say everyone’s a fool but me. [Talking about] ‘it offended my ancestors,’ but when you did ‘She’s Got To Have It’ and some of those other thug movies you did…you took Malcolm X and put a Zoot suit on him…did that offend your ancestors, punk?

It’s a game, man. So whatever he’s mad about is something that happened way, way long ago. Thank God it didn’t work [to stop the movie from being successful].”

Just a side note…There were Blacks in cowboy movies. I suggest Mr. Gregory check out Black classic movies starring Herb Jeffries.

      • Ebogan63

He must have forgotten Woody Strode too. No one ain’t talking bout ‘freeing’ his dumb ass, but he and other negroes praising that white boy, seem to have the need to be entertained.

      • crazycanuck

I’m not understanding this,he is calling Malcolm X a ‘thug movie? That is just insane.

        • AxelFoley

Exactly. WTF is up with Dick Gregory?

Y’know what, though? Dick got some nerve talking about Spike like that. He’s always been one of the ones cooning it up at Tavis Negro Super Bowl.

Yeah, I still remember the last one Tavis had. And Dick was on stage actin’ a fool.

          • GOVCHRIS1988

Yeah, we all remember “MANGANESE” Though he was on point on the Clinton Black Enough thing. THAT was when he was lucid again.

      • edp4bho

Hiya POU. Gregory is not to be taken seriously, no matter the subject. He insisted that PBO was going to have Al Gore be his VP running mate, and then turn the presidency over to Gore. Just one sign of his nonsensical jibberish. That Bahamian Diet sucked out some of his brain matter. As for Django- no thanks. I’m now watching “Slavery By Any Other Name” on some independent station. This was not done for entertainment. Narration by Lawrence Fishburne. Very hard to watch without getting mad as shyte !!

        • AxelFoley

He said that shit for real? Damn, so many old heads lost they fuckin’ mind when PBO came on the scene.

Hol’ up. Dick said he’s seen Django 12 times?

Ain’t no way in hell I’ma see a movie at the theatre 12 times, even if someone else pays for it. Only way I watch a movie over and over again is if I’m at home.

    • Joy

Spike has run his course? Careful, Jamie. Ten years from now, you might be taking Cuba Gooding Jr’s place in Snow Dogs 5.

      • Camille

LOL! You are mean Joy! LOL!

    • GOVCHRIS1988

Ok, on Dick Gregory I’m gonna say its his age. He sometimes slips in to these bouts at times, so……….. On the Spike Lee thing, yes he has a right to his opinion. But, it would hold a considerable amount of merit if he actually made more films and employed black actors. Look, I give it up to Spike, he is a pioneer. He revolutionized black filmmaking with the likes of Malcolm X, Mo Better Blues, Get On the Bus, Bamboozled and such. But it seems to me that recently he digs into directors who are actually employing black people. I mean, I agree with him on Tyler Perry. I mean, I support him in his craft, but I think his stuff should be written WAY better and maybe he should consult other black TV writers to hone his stuff. But, on the flipside he has employed many black actors and actresses and revitalized many careers. I haven’t seen that from Spike much in recent years. So, while I think that his criticism has merit, I wish he would get in depth in what happened during slavery. Tell the story about the real slave revolts. Like Denmark Vesey, Nat Turner, & Joseph Cinque.

      • crazycanuck

Why did he stop writing and making his own movies?

        • GOVCHRIS1988

Not really alot in recent years. Yeah a couple of documentaries, but not like in the glory days.

        • dannie22

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hook_Summer he didnt stop. this one came out last summer but didnt get much traction. Spike also produces. He helped produce ‘Pariah” which was an indie hit last year

      • Miranda

I’ve never forgiven Spike for Girl 6.

      • Camille

Spike Lee was actually the first person to unveil the hardened racist that is Clint Eastwood.

That was long, long before anyone really understood that Clint Eastwood was driven personally and professionally by his long held, deep-seated bigotry, hate and pettiness nurtured and held since the Jim Crow era.

For that alone, I’ll never ever completely dismiss Spike Lee. He does still have some work to do on himself, and some penance too, but in the end he is still an essential voice.

    • dannie22

i’ll just say this. I ride for spike lee. he’s a pioneer and whether you agree with him or not, he aint afraid to speak out. QT dont give a damn about black folks except to use the culture to make money. And black folks wont be satisfied until QT is calling all of us ‘nigger’. Im shocked and disgusted at dick gregory but then again maybe he missed his meds that day. I havent seen the movie yet, but i will when it comes to the dollar matinee.

And jaime will one day be begging once again to be in any film, including a spike lee joint.

    • edp4bho

Wait! I hadn’t heard of slave dolls. WTF is wrong with everybody? Having a black president in no way gives folks the right to beat us back into slavery. And have dumb-ass negroes helping them?

HSBC to pay $249 million to end foreclosure reviews
    By Aruna Viswanatha

    WASHINGTON | Fri Jan 18, 2013 3:49pm EST

(Reuters) – HSBC Holdings Plc agreed to pay $249 million to end a case-by-case review of past home foreclosures in the United States, bringing the total payout by banks to resolve related issues to $9.3 billion.

London-based HSBC agreed to pay $96 million to eligible borrowers who lost their homes to foreclosure in 2009 and 2010, and provide $153 million in other assistance, including loan modifications and forgiveness.

HSBC said in a statement it was pleased to have reached the agreement and expects to record a pre-tax charge of $96 million in the fourth quarter of 2012 for the cash portion of the settlement. The bank said it expected to cover the loan assistance through existing reserves.

The settlement, with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve Board, is the 13th the agencies have reached this month.

The National Climate Assessment lays out how “Climate change is already affecting the American people.” It states, “Certain types of weather events have become more frequent and/or intense including heat waves, heavy downpours and in some regions floods and drought. Sea level is rising, oceans are becoming more acidic, and glaciers and Arctic sea ice are melting.” And the poor are the hardest hit by the changing climate, where cities in Mexico, Venezuela, India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, the Phillippines are some of the most vulnerable. The Philippines, for instance, was hit by an unprecedented typhoon that killed more than 1,000 people; meanwhile, East Coast cities are still reeling from Hurricane Sandy.

    Peeps, I’ve got a question.

I read a comment on another site that said the NRA gets surplus weapons from the military for free & sells them on the open market. This is one way some assault style weapons get to the public. Also they said that DOD gives grants to NRA for “gun education” or some such.

I asked the person for links to support this but got no response, either because there was no back up links or the person didn’t see my comment.

I tried doing the google on this but only pulled up links for NRA or military sites. I’m not comfortable visiting those sites and really doubt I would get the info I want.

Anybody have any ideas how I could better hunt this down? I know google is your friend yada, yada but I sometimes have difficulty finding exactly what I need. Thanks for any suggestions.

    – —Fordham University launches project to create database of slavery burial grounds – – –

    – —-Fordham University is launching a project to create a database today which lists the burial grounds of enslaved African-Americans in the United States.

    — -Sandra Arnold, a history student in Fordham’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies, has been leading the ambitious project, reports Fordham University’s eNewsroom.

Irma Watkins-Owens, Ph.D., is the co-director and an associate professor of history and African-American studies at Fordham. The two are working closely with advisers from several other American universities, including Emory, Yale, and the College of William and Mary.

“The burial grounds of the enslaved are sacred spaces; they mark their place in the world and are a testimony to the humanity of a people denied dignity in life,” said Watkins-Owens in an interview with eNewsroom. “We must remember, recover and restore these spaces. Doing so is a testimony to our own humanity.”

    – –The idea for the database came when Arnold discovered the plantation cemetery where here ancestors had been buried in her home state of Tennessee. Arnold had the opportunity to visit the site where her great-grandparents had been laid to rest in 2003. Her great-grandfather, B. Harmon and his wife, Ethel, were former slaves.

    – —>What The Daily Beast’s Absurd Vaccine Truther Screed Tells Us About Journalism– – –

    – — I’m not going to link to the execrable anti-vaccine screed published on The Daily Beast today. I’m not even going to link to the thoughtful, well-written counterpoint they published by a infectious disease specialist. To do either would reward a transparent attempt to gin up a pageview-inducing “controversy.” Moreover, it would treat the two pieces as if they were two sides of an argument, as opposed to medical fact and conspiratorial lunacy.

If you must read something on the topic, here‘s how many people die of influenza in the United States and here‘s an explanation of why vaccine panics aren’t worth taking seriously.

What’s particularly galling about The Daily Beast‘s vaccine “debate” is that it treats science criticism like punditry. Political writing is plagued by a consensus of bores, commentators who all have opinions within the same narrow band of “acceptable” views. The online journalism revolution opened this up a bit, but not nearly enough. Hence, as a matter of inclination, I’m reflectively skeptical about claims that editors should refuse to publish authors with certain political opinions simply because they’re “out of the mainstream.” More often than not, such arguments serve more to defend staid political views from challenge than anything else.

Science journalism has, if anything, the opposite problem. The basic task of a science journalist is to explain complicated scientific findings to people who don’t have the time or the expertise to learn it from primary sources. Increasingly, science journalists are acting as science critics as well as science expositors, but that doesn’t undermine the need to fully understand and embrace scientific methodology (if anything, it intensifies it). Science journalism, sadly, often fails in both of these roles. This generally happens when writers lack the time or background knowledge necessary to properly digest and explain the research in question.

The GOP staffer’s response to the study was…bizarre. The Weather Underground? Animal Liberation Front? Earth Liberation Front? What the hell is he talking about?!!!

New Study Highlights Threat From Far Right-Wing Groups In U.S.

A new study from a think tank connected to the West Point Military Academy highlights the threat of violent far-right movements in the United States, leading to the conclusion that, while diverse in in their causes, they are similar in their use of violence to achieve their aims.[…] The study is already coming under attack by Republicans for not properly defining what constitutes a member of the “far right.”

A Republican congressional staffer who served in the military told The Washington Times: “If [the Defense Department] is looking for places to cut spending, this junk study is ground zero. “Shouldn’t the Combating Terrorism Center be combating radical Islam around the globe instead of perpetuating the left’s myth that right-wingers are terrorists?” the staffer said. “The $64,000 dollar question is when will the Combating Terrorism Center publish their study on real left-wing terrorists like the Animal Liberation Front, Earth Liberation Front, and the Weather Underground?”

    Here’s an interesting development…

Teacher Rebellion: Refusal to Administer Standardized Testing Spreads in Washington

The teachers are rising up again—and this time, they’re going after standardized tests. In Seattle, a boycott against the national Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) tests is spreading across high schools. At Garfield High School, where the boycott began, 19 teachers called a press conference to announce that they would refuse to give the tests because they are a waste of time and resources for the students. The test scores do not affect the students’ grades or ability to graduate, and the test’s material itself has nothing to do with the students’ classes or curriculum—meaning that students rarely take the tests seriously. [….]

Meanwhile, teachers and parents across the country are taking note of the Seattle boycott. A petition supporting the teachers has collected more than 3,000 signatures in less than a week, and a Facebook page boasts hundreds of supportive comments. As Nancy Carlsson-Page in Massachusetts wrote in support of the petition: “I hope the Seattle teachers’ courage spreads across the country and ends this national obsession with testing.”[….]

Not With A Bang But With A Whimper

When you’re wrong, you’re wrong. I thought that by ruling out any way to bypass the debt limit, the White House was setting itself up, at least potentially, for an ignominious cave-in. But it appears that the strategy has worked, and it’s the Republicans giving up. I’m happy to concede that the president and team called this one right.

Krugman – why not concede you’ve been wrong, wrong, wrong about PBO and his administration from the day he got the nomination. By the way, your Nobel is a fake Bank prize not the real thing, like the Nobel Peace Prize, you know the real one awarded to the President.

    • Add this to the highlight reel along with the second Depression, nationalize banks, originally proposing a stimulus package 175 billion dollars less than PBO’s, the coin thing and going into freakout mode when The President does something politically he doesn’t understand .

  • Miss Valerie stay shadin’ mofos!

We read Jarrett an email from a former West Wing colleague who said: “They really just need new people. Everyone is so dead tired. They need new energy, new life, new ideas.”

“That’s from somebody who left?” Jarrett asked. “Well, they probably left because they were tired. I think the people who are left behind are energized. I don’t get the sense of fatigue at all. … So, it sounds like somebody who probably needed a rest, and there’s no harm in that. … These are hard jobs, and people do burn out.”

…“I’m kind of old to change,” added Jarrett, 56. “But if somebody were to come to me and say, ‘You know what, Valerie? I think if you were to do this it would be more helpful,’ of course I would listen to that.”

Has anyone ever done that? She thought about it a second. “Actually not so much,” she said. “Not so much. But that [would be] very different than [an] anonymous quote in a profile. You know?”

Robert F. Chew, who played Proposition Joe on ‘The Wire,’ dead at 52
An ‘exceptional actor’ and ‘essential part of community,’ David Simon says

By David Zurawik The Baltimore Sun
    4:27 p.m. EST, January 18, 2013

Robert F. Chew, a 52-year-old Baltimore actor and teacher who portrayed one of television’s most unforgettable characters as Proposition Joe on HBO’s “The Wire,” died Thursday of apparent heart failure in his sleep at his home in Northeast Baltimore, according to Clarice Chew, his sister.

Mr. Chew, who appeared in “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “The Corner,” as well as “The Wire,” also taught and mentored child and young adult actors at Baltimore’s Arena Players, a troupe he stayed with as his television career blossomed in David Simon HBO series. Through his work at the Arena Players Youth Theatre, he brought new talent to the attention of casting directors and coached the team of young actors who played students in the Baltimore City School system in Season 4 of “The Wire.”

“Robert was not only an exceptional actor, he was an essential part of the film and theater community in Baltimore,” David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’ said in an email Friday. “He could have gone to New York or Los Angeles and commanded a lot more work, but he loved the city as his home and chose to remain here working. He understood so much about his craft that it was no surprise at all that we would go to him to coach our young actors in season four. He was the conduit through which they internalized their remarkable performances.”

    – — –If this the best they can do, the Republicans ought to pick up their ball and go home. In agreeing to extend the debt ceiling for three months without any corresponding spending cuts, the GOP is finally acknowledging that the president was never going to negotiate with them and they would be blamed for a default. But, now we will be back here in three months with the Republicans again taking crap for creating uncertainty and undermining confidence in the full faith and credit of the United States. The one gimmick they’ve included here is a requirement that the Senate pass a budget or no one in Congress will receive any pay. The idea is to try to shift the debate from default to Senate dysfunction, and to get people thinking about the budget and deficit spending again. The problem with their strategy is three-fold. First, the Senate could refuse to agree to this stipulation. Second, the Budget Control Act of 2011 already sets spending limits for next year, so the Senate doesn’t really need to pass a detailed non-binding budget. Third, almost no one in the country cares whether Congress gets paid or not. In fact, most people would like to see them go without a paycheck and see how it feels. – —
    – — –SNIP – – —
    — Tip O’Neill had to put up with this crap when Reagan was president. He never closed down the government or caused a downgrade in our debt ceiling, and people didn’t say they’d rather have a colonoscopy than a drink with Tip O’Neill.

    Office of the Press Secretary

    – -Statement by the Press Secretary
The President has made clear that Congress has only two options: pay the bills they have racked up, or fail to do so and put our nation into default. We are encouraged that there are signs that Congressional Republicans may back off their insistence on holding our economy hostage to extract drastic cuts in Medicare, education and programs middle class families depend on. Congress must pay its bills and pass a clean debt limit increase without further delay. And as he has said, the President remains committed to further reducing the deficit in a balanced way.

    GOP eyes new election laws
By STEVE PEOPLES | Associated Press

After back-to-back presidential losses, Republicans in key states want to change the rules to make it easier for them to win.

From Wisconsin to Pennsylvania, GOP officials who control legislatures in states that supported President Barack Obama are considering changing state laws that give the winner of a state’s popular vote all of its Electoral College votes, too. Instead, these officials want Electoral College votes to be divided proportionally, a move that could transform the way the country elects its president.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus endorsed the idea this week, and other Republican leaders support it, too, suggesting that the effort may be gaining momentum. There are other signs that Republican state legislators, governors and veteran political strategists are seriously considering making the shift as the GOP looks to rebound from presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Electoral College shellacking and the demographic changes that threaten the party’s long-term political prospects.

“It’s something that a lot of states that have been consistently blue that are fully controlled red ought to be looking at,” Priebus told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, emphasizing that each state must decide for itself.

NPR Will Stop Referring To Obama As ‘Mr.’ On Second Reference To Avoid Appearance Of ‘Favoritism’
    by Noah Rothman | 1:03 pm, January 18th, 2013

One week after MSNBC’s hosts of The Cycle pondered if it was disrespectful for news organizations to refer to President Barack Obama as simply “Obama” after the first reference, National Public Radio’s managing editor has determined that the organization will jettison their policy of calling presidents “Mr.” on the second reference in order to avoid the appearance of “favoritism.” NPR announced Friday that they intend to refer to him as simply “Obama” on the second reference, as many other media outlets’ style guidelines recommend.

Beginning with the inauguration of President Barack Obama for his second term next Monday, “Mr.” Obama and his successors will be called by just their last names on second reference. “Obama,” for example. Just like the rest of us,” wrote NPR’s ombudsman Edward Schumacher-Matos.

Stuart Seidel, NPR’s managing editor, noted that the honorific prefix “mister” is antiquated and overly deferential to the President of the United States.

“Although meant as a gesture of respect for the office, many listeners have regarded the use of “Mister” as disrespectful,” Seidel wrote. “On the other hand, during the most recent presidential contest, the contrast between our references to “Mister Obama” and just plain “Romney” were perceived by many as showing favoritism toward the incumbent president.”

Respect for The President of the United States not “antiquated” nor is it “favoritism.” Quit inflicting your lack of respect on us. Another reason I quit listening to NPR years ago. I don’t want this President, particularly THIS PRESIDENT, to be called “just like the rest of us.” He’s not! Deferential is not subservient; it’s respect and shows good manners.

I gotta repeat this comment of Sepia’s from the morning thread because it deserves the widest possible distribution:

So Andrea Mitchell was whining to Stef “La Blade” Cutter about women not playing golf, cards and b-ball with PBO. La Blade responded thus so:

“I didn’t come to spend personal time with President Obama. I came to work FOR President Obama.”

Really, that’s it. Case closed. The WH is not a frat house or a broadway play or a soap opera (and I LOVE soap operas and trash tv, just saying the WH is not a reality tv show). The WH is a place where in this admin unlike some others, some of the finest professionals in the country have congregated, prevented a depression, delivered HCR, finregreform, and numerous other needed changes. As per usual, Stephanie Cutter is a thousand percent on. point.
