Friday Afternoon Thread: Top 10 Political Moments of 2012

Come’on Obots! I know we can come up with a better list than this. A list without “Please Proceed Governor” is just not a definitive list! And no #RomneyShambles? The President creating the best selling ringtone of 2012 didn’t make the cut? Come’on now!

Well here’s CNN’s list, but what say you Obots?

  • Miranda

Florida security firm gives detailed account of ‘jail escort plan’ to take Zimmerman to safe house once he was released on bail

An extraordinary movie-like plot to move accused murderer George Zimmerman into hiding disguised in a hat and fake glasses has come to light, courtesy of a private investigator’s legal attempts to recoup $27,000 in unpaid security bills.

A lawsuit filed in Florida by an Orlando security company gives a detailed account of the secretive “jail escort plan” Zimmerman’s lawyers commissioned to spirit away the man who shot and killed teenager Trayvon Martin once he was released from prison on bail.

    • Alma98

Yeah his ass was scared to death and still is.

    • conlakappa

So much drama and fake-intrigue with this very small man. And unpaid bills. There’s the hero and embodiment of Stand Your Ground: bad debts and complaining about his safety.

  • Alma98

A couple of my favorites are: Horses & Bayonets, Military spending is not a game of battleship. And that list is craptacular lol.

    • Miranda

That list is awful! Karl Rove losing his mind for all the world to see HAS to be up there somewhere!

      • Alma98

CNN is still living in their own bubble.

    • Camille

That was one of my all time favorites. President Obama completely wiped the smirk of Romney’s smart alecky face with that one.

      Romney looked so small.

      • Camille

        wiped the smirk off–

  • rikyrah

Can’t miss the CNN headline saying

” Supreme Court Strikes down Obamacare”

    • Alma98

They need attention Miranda to make themselves feel important. I wonder what kind of person dates these self obsessed asses.

    • crazycanuck

      Oh that was priceless.

    • AxelFoley

      That shit was gold.

    • Camille

That was a very telling moment about what we now pretend call “media” in our country.

CNN will never recover from the contamination and complete decimation of what was once a world-renowned news source.

    • trose1

Jeffrey Toobin will never regain credibility after screaming on CNN for month how Obama care would be thrown out by supreme court.

  • Miranda

Emoprogs and whiny fauxgressives still won’t STFU though:

    Breaking News‏@BreakingNews
Report: Obama is not making a new offer at ‘fiscal cliff’ meeting with congressional leaders, source tells @Reuters

    • crazycanuck

Do they ever get tired being wrong all the dam time?

      • Miranda

Nope…I believe it actually gives them energy.

        • Alma98

Which should be aimed at the teapublicans, but then nobody would pay attention to their asses.

    • Alma98

They need attention Miranda to make themselves feel important. I wonder what kind of person dates these self obsessed asses.

      • conlakappa

::backs away from writing something really vulgar ’cause I’m on my way to visit my 100-year-old granny; leaving it to the Admiral to go dirty::

Assuming that they date, people with even lower self-esteem who tell them just how important and smart they are.

        • Alma98

          LOL!

    • gc

Can I SHUT them up? Please, please, please???

      • AxelFoley

If only you could, gc. If only you could.

    • Camille

I so hate these emoprogs and frankly want nothing to do with them. I don’t even want to support anything or person they support.

      They suck.

    • Camille

Krauthammer is a sad jumbled up mix of paranoia, savvy and soullessness.

To live life being Krauthammer or Hannity is permanent purgatory.

    • Kennymack1971

Shorter Krauthammer : He’s whupping our ass man.

miranda- – – –ACTUALLY- —-HE KNEW!- –HE HADTA SHOW ERRYBODY –that DI-ENT BELIEVE!!- —

    – —-Obama has learned that dealing with Republicans is an exercise in futility – –

    – —— -It is difficult not to have great respect for anyone who accommodates working with morons incapable of producing any useful result for a problem regardless how large or small the intended goal may be. Parents and teachers learn to recognize the pointlessness of reasoning with petulant young children, and yet they exercise patience and continue guiding them despite the seeming futility of their effort out of concern for the welfare of children in their care. President Obama has learned that dealing with Republicans is an exercise in futility regardless the issues facing the nation, and in private he must acknowledge that it is seemingly impossible to negotiate with ideologues who ran for office for the sole purpose of obstructing the government and causing as much damage as possible as ideological purists.- —[AGAIN- -- --He KNEW!]

Throughout the President’s first term, Republicans opposed every single proposal and piece of legislation President Obama supported in spite of the damage to the nation’s security and economic health, and the fiscal cliff negotiations have amplified the GOP’s intransigence despite the damage their obstruction will wreak on economic recovery. When House Speaker John Boehner’s absurd Plan B failed to garner enough Republican support to pass the House, he joined forces with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to demand the White House and Senate Democrats submit a proposal to avoid the fiscal cliff so House Republicans could take up the bill and do what they went to Washington for; reject it out of hand.

One could hardly blame the President if he threw up his hands and announced that negotiating with Republicans was nugatory, but like a longsuffering parent desperate to keep their child from making a tragic error, President Obama continues prodding obstinate Republicans to prevent a recession, credit default, and defense cuts the GOP can hardly comport. However, with only four days until sequestration cuts and tax increases take effect, it appears Republicans are content to let the nation go over the fiscal cliff. What is ridiculous is that Boehner and McConnell know the President does not believe House Republicans will even consider any proposal that is not 100% spending cuts and permanent Bush-era tax cuts for all income earners, but that is part of their strategy.
    THERE IS MORE. – —- A GOOD READ. :>)

  • lamh36

Did Joe Biden telling Paul Ryan “oh so you’re Jack Kennedy now??” make the list…lol

    • Alma98

      Malarkey! LOL

    • AxelFoley

That was some sonning on the national stage. Ryan never recovered from that.

    • MsKitty

That whole debate was a bonanza of one-liners from Uncle Joe. I still watch a few clips here and there on YouTube for laughs.

    • BoomerGal

      I liked that, too.

Another candidate drops out of race for JJJ’s congressional seat.

State Sen. Donne Trotter has told several south suburban officials that he will officially end his bid for the Democratic nomination for the 2nd Congressional District seat that Jesse Jackson Jr. vacated last month, sources said Friday.

Trotter, 62, is scheduled to make a formal announcement on Saturday, said the sources, who asked not to be identified because they did not want to pre-empt the veteran lawmaker’s public decision. Trotter did not return phone calls to the Tribune.

The move by Trotter comes after his arrest on Dec. 5 for trying to board a Washington, D.C.-bound plane at O’Hare International Airport with an unloaded gun and a loaded magazine in his garment bag. Trotter has said he forgot putting the firearm in his bag after working a security job the previous evening.

Even after the arrest, Trotter had vowed to continue seeking the nomination. Earlier this month, he sought the formal endorsement of Democratic leaders in the South Side and south suburban congressional district. Trotter’s arrest did not come up in public discussion and ultimately the Democratic leaders were unable to agree to slate a candidate among several well-known contenders.

  • crazycanuck

Awh, look at them all trying to be reporters.

    • Camille

In a world where little, gossipy, pampers-wearing, twerpy Luke Russert is considered a “credible and serious journalist”, it’s easy for the rest of the mediocre crew to feel a tad more “journalistic”.

    • rikyrah

      trying to be reporters…

BWA H AH HA HA HA HA

  • Camille

    He is pissed.

  • GN

“If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.” That was huge IMO, because at the time, there was a disgusting debate about whether that child had brought the attention of a predator on himself by “looking like a thug.” POTUS was like, no he looks like the son of a President, MY SON. If the far right and PL are still scratching their heads about why people would have stood in line for hours to vote for President Obama’s second term, they can look to that sentence as one reason of many.

    • Miranda

I thought of that one too GN, that was monumental.

    • Camille

That was important. These assholes have lost their fucking minds with the constant disrespect of this President.

Can’t even stay quiet for a few minutes while the President speaks.

    • Miranda

Oh I must see this clip!

    • Worldwatcher7

I was floored by that. I thought these people couldn’t get anymore disrespectful — but to have the President of the US have to tell you to shut your mouth! That was disgraceful. Home training and common sense are clearly in short supply. Sorry for the rant, but I feel the spirit of my grandmama rising up to cut off a switch for some of these grown ass children.

  • GN

This would never make CNN, but 1911United was one of the top ten stories of the election cycle to me. A group of regular brothers decided to celebrate their fraternity’s founding by doing something positive for black people as a whole. They organized themselves, went into swing states, and got a metric ton of people, particularly college students, out to the polls. If that’s not spectacular, I don’t know what is. Such a refreshing anecdote to the Tavis/Cornel anti-POTUS tours.

    • conlakappa

They were so kind about it too–theiir event postings on my State’s OFA would always include “all are welcome.”

Now for me to be a stinker: I heard from an inauguration coordinator. Problem? It was for the one task I wouldn’t want: driving! First of all, my car is a Mini. Secondly, I would be so nervous. What if there is snow on the ground and Miss Aretha refuses to get in my car?! No, her name was mentioned but one I thought of!

      • GN

WORD! Those brothas did the damn thing and set an example for all of us to follow.

      • GN

They were simply fantastic. One of their mottos was “stop disrespecting my President.” They spoke for so many of us.

        • Alma98

          I loved this pic.

    • rikyrah

I loved their ad…and the fact that they went around the country on the bus for months…because…as they said..

‘ what else do we have to do that is more important than this’?

      • GN

        Impressive beyond words.

I always forget to mention how much I really like and respect Dr. James Patterson. He has been a very consistent, calm, intelligent, insightful, compassionate, humble and respectful voice of reason in the midst of loud, obnoxious, self-serving, self-important, self aggrandizing bloviators.

What a breath of fresh air. What a rarity in a world where people quickly lose their minds and completely get carried away once they get a chance at peacocking on television.

    • Miranda

Do you mean Dr. James Peterson of Lehigh Univ (I think that’s the college he’s with)? I love him too. He’s a great analyst.

      • Camille

Dr James Peterson yes–sorry about the unconscious renaming of this really wonderful and brilliant man.

    — – –Reid, McConnell will try to cut deal- – –

    – – — -Congressional leaders emerged from Friday’s high-stakes White House meeting with no deal in hand to avert the fiscal cliff, with pressure mounting on Senate leaders to find a last-ditch accord to avert $500 billion of tax hikes and spending cuts set to take effect in the new year.

Returning to the Senate after the hour-long White House meeting, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said the two would attempt to cut a deal over the weekend and pitch it to their parties on Sunday — just two days before the country faces the prospect of spending cuts and tax hikes that could eventually send the country back to recession.

      • AxelFoley

LOL, it was like RMoney was cursed by Miss Celie–everything he did failed.

        • GN

hahaha, he had the Celie curse indeed. And the laid off Bain workers collaborated with Bill Burton’s PrioritiesUSA for one of the biggest smackdowns I’ve ever seen of a political candidate. PrioritiesUSA is another top ten story without a doubt. The GOP got all excited with CitizensUnited, but the left-leaning PACs went to town, wow.

          • Miranda

And PrioritiesUSA had not even a tenth of the money the other side had and still blew them out the water.

          • conlakappa

And the emoprogs told me that Burton was mad because he wasn’t named White House press secretary, that he left in a huff. No, not because his wife was 8.5 months pregnant and he needed something to manage at his own pace. Nope, it was because he was proof that the President hates black people.

          • rikyrah

it was because Priorities was telling THE TRUTH.

That STAGE Ad was so frigging powerful…WTF could you say once that had finished playing.

      • rikyrah

the brutalness of that ad just kept the MSM in shock. they never expected the Obama Campaign to just take a sledgehammer to Willard like that.

they thought somebody was playing with Willard..

        but, as I often said..

NOBODY was playing with Willard at the Prudential Building.

  • MsKitty

I was bored last night, so I hit up Comcast on demand and watched an episode of Amish Mafia.

This show is so fake I thought I was watching an hour-long SNL skit. Yet I couldn’t turn it off because it was so over the top. What really sealed it for me was when John and Alvin went to go see the the distributor of the fake Amish furniture, and then the scene fades to black with the words “To this day Alvin and John will not discuss the events of that afternoon.” Then they come back to them setting a bonfire with just a couple of chairs. I’m like I’m supposed to believe they took somebody out just for a dining room set? C’mon Son.

Having said that I will probably watch again because it has the potential to be one of those “It’s so bad it’s good” type of shows.

    • rikyrah

      I told you…

I don’t even care if it is all fake, it’s HILARIOUS

    • morphus

So many things have happened this year. I cannot remember them all.
So many funny things have happened in politics.
Ryan drinking that water in the debate.
    Meatloaf singing
Chris Mathews acting a fool on TV after the 1st debate.
Just today Pres telling someone to STFU he is talking.
    So many memories

    • Kennymack1971

That VP debate was hilarious. Paul Ryan kept getting sonned by Ride or Die Joe.

  • GN

Towards the end, Team Obama seemed literally giddy to me; perfect example: “I got 99 problems but Mitt aint one” lol, the artists coming with the creativity would be one of my top ten stories too (LOVE Mariah Carey’s “We Gone Win” song too!)

  • BoomerGal

My favorite is when POTUS told Tapper (reporter) at the news conference, “I’ve been president of the united states dealing with the worst economic crisis since the great depression, an auto industry on the verge of collapse and two wars. I haven’t been on vacation.” Oooooooooo, I felt that!

    • goldenstar

He needed to have gone on but it was too public for that.

oh, so Tyra Banks fired Nigel Barker and the J’s from America’s Next Top Model and now Nigel in on another competition show with none other than Tyra’s “frenemy” Naomi Campbell..rowrrr!

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/25/the-face-nigel-barker_n_1702260.html

    • Town

Ya know, Tired went on and on about how Naomi had problems with her other black models, but I haven’t heard any other black model come out and say “I had a severe problem with Naomi Campbell.”

      • conlakappa

They had some makeup moment on Tyra’s talk show though. It seemed to go deeper than any competition because, really, none of them could compete with Naomi. Tyra looks just like Naomi’s mother, they both agreed, and Naomi treated her poorly because of mother issues.

  • lamh36

Watching Pride and Prejudice on E! It’s not my favorite version (I prefer the Masterpiece Theatre version with Colin Firth as Mr Darcy). Still, this version is a good substitute. If you like PBS Masterpiece Theatre or Dowton Abbey, then this the version with Keira Knightley. I always distracted by her collarbone which always looks like it could cut ice.

    • rikyrah

I’m so happy that Downton Abbey is back soon!!!

    • Worldwatcher7

I agree, the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle version is THE definitive version.

  • Camille

Tom Cobourn is just a shamelessly disingenuous , slimy, dishonest, cowardly prick.

    • Camille

      Tom Coborn. Still an arse.

    • Camille

Agh. Tom Coburn! Sorry for the typos. iPad disaster. But you get the gist.

Tom Coburn, senator from Oklahoma is a first class asshole.

Most Unproductive Congress in 60 Years

As 2012 comes to a close, the 112th Congress is set to go down in American history as the most unproductive session since the 1940s…

    http://politicalwire.com/archives/2012/12/28/most_unproductive_congress_in_60_years.html

I guess the teaparty made history after all: they are a major component of the worst Congress in six decades.

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what,” Romney is shown saying in a video posted online by the magazine. “There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it.”

“Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax,” Romney said.

Romney said his role “is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

——Obama Heckled By Daily Caller Reporter During Immigration Speech President Barack Obama’s angry response to a reporter who interrupted his Rose Garden remarks Friday was the latest salvo in what some political experts see as an era of incivility.

Neil Munro, a White House correspondent for the Washington-based website The Daily Caller,# asked the president about his administration’s dramatic policy shift on immigration while the president was in the middle of delivering prepared remarks.

And the foreigner being impertinent on immigration would have had his green card pulled. Is there a virtual arcade where they get points for disrespecting the President? This isn’t Skee-Ball, you jags.

Three people emerged this year in my opinion as incredibly awesome and hopefully, steady stars to look out for for years to come:

Joy Reid, Dr. James Peterson and Congresswoman Karen Bass. These are my quiet, under-appreciated and largely uncelebrated heroes of 2012.

They refused to fall for the okey dokey or the political expediency of disrespecting or piling on of President Obama. They stayed consistent and not because they were expecting any payback from the President but because it was the right and honest thing to do.

Smart, full of grace, insightful, chockfull of integrity: these three are besides Michelle and Barack Obama, my absolute political and public heroes of 2012.

They rock. And we will never forget.

    – –Many were disappointed after President Obama’s first post-election press conference when he talked about the urgency of climate change — and then immediately swept aside specifics for action in his second term. — MANY???????FACTS??? – –

Days after, White House press secretary Jay Carney shot down the prospects for a carbon tax by saying the Administration would “never propose” such a policy.

There doesn’t seem to be much urgency coming out of the White House.

In response, The New York Times is calling out the President for his plan to address climate change with a “conversation”.

    – – – – -SNIP – – –

    – — -The New York Times piece fails to point out one of the most critical — and often ignored — pieces of climate policy. Creating new standards for power plants and building renewable energy is only one piece of the equation. In order to truly address carbon pollution, we must keep large amounts of coal, oil, and gas in the ground. According to the International Energy Agency, nearly two-thirds of known fossil fuel reserves must stay underground in order to avoid catastrophic climate change. While the Obama Administration has done more than any other administration in history to promote alternative forms of energy, it has also shown a willingness to aggressively promote unchecked fossil fuel extraction. - – – -THANK U!!!!!

    — – -Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has joined forces with Sigma Gamma Rho, one of the nation’s largest African American sororities, to help build awareness of career possibilities in science, technology, and engineering among girls and parents in the African American community.

Working with local Girl Scout councils around the country, Sigma Gamma Rho’s alumnae chapters have made GSUSA’s Imagine Engineering program, funded by the National Science Foundation, a focus of the sorority’s annual National Youth Symposium.

“Girl Scouting and Sigma Gamma Rho have the same goal: to build the nation’s future leaders by helping girls dream big and accomplish much today,” said GSUSA Chief Executive Officer Anna Maria Chavez. “We are delighted to be part of this partnership to help girls do great things in critical fields such as science, technology, engineering and math.”

“Response to Imagine Engineering has been terrific,” said Sigma Gamma Rho National President Bonita Herring. “We surveyed 250 girls who took part in the program, and more than two thirds of them said they now understood how ‘someone like me’ could become an engineer.”

Matt Damon is the arsiest of assholes. How I despise that self-important, dumb fool.
Here’s how he responds to the Clint Eastwood racist skit at the RNC:

Damon was also asked about Clint Eastwood’s performance at the Republican National Convention.
‘I heard the backlash, but I never saw the whole thing because I just didn’t want to see my friend … you know,’ he said. ‘Look, his knowledge of filmmaking is so vast and deep that he can wing it beautifully on the set. What he did at the RNC was an unrehearsed bit he decided to do at the last minute. You can’t go onstage and do 12 minutes of stand-up completely unrehearsed. But I agree with what Bill Maher said — Clint killed it at the convention for 12 minutes, and the audience loved him. I wouldn’t do that unless I spent a month rehearsing.’

Anybody who trashes the President unreservedly but will make excuses for the racist, hostile behavior of Clint Eastwood has to be a racist coward of the first degree.

Fuck off Matt Damon – and for good too idiot!

    • GN

Yup, it’s a blatant double standard, and it’s why I despise emos more than the far right–the far right is open with their disrespect and racism. Fauxgressives claim to be acting on principle when they’re doing anything but. I right there with you re: Matt Damon; he can kiss my black ass and so can his disrespectful “friend” Clint Eastwood.

    • conlakappa

Yep, it is why I cannot stand to watch a minute of Matt Damon. But I guess commenting on things he didn’t see or doesn’t know is about par for the course for him these days. Privilege has its privilege and is given a platform to display it.

Clint killed it all right. If by it Damon meant RMoney and the R party’s hopes and dreams.
