Friday Afternoon Thread: Wake Up And Vote!

First Lady Michelle Obama appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live with an important message: WAKE UP AND VOTE!

Here’s the entire interview:

PART II:

PART III:

  • Alma98

LOVE FLOTUS! Is there any color that she doesn’t look beautiful in just gorgeousss.

    • edp4bho

She looks smashing in every color. By the way, Alma, why not use her choices as a guide to your kitchen colors ? I’ve gotten in the habit of choosing my outfit colors by rooms that I admire. Good way to use what’s already in our closets. Works well in reverse too.

      • Aquagranny911

Great idea! Colors we like to wear make us feel good when they surround us in our environment.

        • edp4bho

          Exactly !!

      • Alma98

Thanks for the advice edp4bho I’ll try that. I already made roman shades for the kitchen. Here’s the fabric I used it has a chocolate brown background.

        • edp4bho

Very nice. I can see all that- cabinets, tile, shades- against a cream background, and some smoky teal accents in your accessories, with a pop here and there of red. I took from everyone else’s suggestions. Good luck. I love decorating.

          • Alma98

You read my mine with the blue accents. I’ll just buy my fresh flowers in various shades of red. I buy flowers at the supermarket in winter.

      • Alma98

        deleted wrong place.

    • Aquagranny911

I missed your call for paint colors last night so I will give my two pesos now. I vote for some strong shade of red for these reasons. I love red, myself. Red is good in a kitchen because it is cheerful, stimulates appetite & good conversation. Also in a cold winter climate like WI, it will make you feel warm & cozy on gloomy winter days especially if your kitchen faces north.

      • Alma98

I think I’m going to buy some more samples of reds and creams and see what I like best.

        • Aquagranny911

Beautiful! I admire tile work especially after I did it all in our kitchen. I had a book I used to tell me how but I was so nervous when I started that I was actually shaking!

Your cabinets are beautiful too. Are they maple? I love real wood. That was the most expensive part of our remodel.

          • Alma98

The cabinets are birch and I used a adhesive tile mat for the tiles. It was simple and easy to use. Check out the link.
            http://www.thesimplemat.com/

          • Aquagranny911

Too late for me. I did it tile by tile, the hard way, lol.

          • Alma98

            LOL!

        • nellcote

Couldn’t post last night but I think you should consider cream/ivory. You have a lot of darker shades with woodwork/backsplash/curtains and the lighter contrast would keep the room from being too dark, especially in winter. Having a neutral background lets you change out accessories with your favorite color of the moment without having to commit to repainting the whole kitchen.

          • Alma98

I found a creamy color that I like a lot. It matches the cream in the roman shades. And I thought like you said a darker color would soak up light.

  • Aquagranny911

Love our FLOTUS! I want one of those bullhorns so I can shout louder. I am still running into people who have early ballots but have not mailed them. Sometimes it is all I can do to keep from smacking procrastinators upside the head unless their reason is a real confusion over some item on the ballot which we do take the time to help them clarify.

  • creolechild

Hmmm…maybe this is why they keep trotting out the myth that Mitt is gaining momentum. Bears investigating.~

NSA Analyst Proves GOP Is Stealing Elections

Retired NSA analyst Michael Duniho has worked for nearly seven years trying to understand voting anomalies in his home state of Arizona and Pima County. [....] When Duniho applied a mathematical model to actual voting results in the largest voting precincts, he saw that only the large precincts suddenly trended towards Mitt Romney in the Arizona primary – and indeed all Republicans in every election since 2008 – by a factor of 8%-10%. The Republican candidate in every race saw an 8-10%. gain in his totals whilst the Democrat lost 8-10%. This is a swing of up to 20 point, enough to win an election unless a candidate was losing very badly.

[....] Examining every county across America was too massive an undertaking for any one person so he included a simple set of instructions and encouraged others to do the same with raw vote totals in their county/state.[....] Now here it gets a bit dense: He needed to add columns that show cumulative totals by candidate then compare them by candidate to establish trend lines. That reveals trends should remain statistically constant throughout an election.

But as the spreadsheet shows, the larger the precinct, the numbers start to change dramatically. In every election contest, the trend lines dramatically crossed for no apparent reason. It was revealed that votes were being systemically bled off for Rick Santorum and Ron Paul and then being credited to Mitt Romney.[....]

As if we don’t have enough to worry about here in AZ…..

Now “Cal Tech & NSA engineers(?)” are wading in to tell us that we have been “dead on balls accurate” when we keep screaming that votes are being manipulated & outright stolen. Color me so Surprised!

What exactly is he going to do about it? I thought so…

      • creolechild

Hello, honey bunny. According to the article Duniho is a retired NSA analyst from Arizona (Pima County), which is what I believe played a role in his examination of voting anomalies.

The issue requires DOJ intervention or that a predominate segment of voters request paper ballots. With everything else that’s going on, I doubt that either will happen.

        • Aquagranny911

I was being snarky. That was a partial quote from the movie “My Cousin Vinny”

And in AZ if you want a paper ballot then you request early mail in voting. Easy Peasy!

          • nellcote

Are paper ballots hand counted in AZ? In CA even in-person ballots are paper and everything is fed into counting machines.

          • Aquagranny911

Counting machines unless there is a problem & we also have all paper ballots too. Signatures are verified for all mail in ballots. If you vote at the polls you show ID & sign the register, then get your ballot and vote.

We use a system of fill in the arrow for the candidate you want using a black ball point pen.

It’s actually a pretty good system. I’m really not sure what that dude was talking about. We have had ballots go missing at some precincts but that has been more for local elections, maybe primaries.

Our biggest problems have been voter suppression & intimidation. If you can’t even vote at all it really doesn’t matter what some numbers wonk can say with statistics.

NSA analyst says it all for me. Wonder how many calls he made or doors he knocked on for GOTV. Nada probably.

      • JojoRaze

That kills me how they are defending it. PBO had an official photog when the budget was shoestring, Romney giving out bonuses can’t employ a good photog. If PBO ever did this mess, people would be shouting “See, that proves he can’t win because he Photoshopped the crowds.” But with mittens it’s “See what had happened was, but stop complaining, y’all are liberally biased!”

Israel: Netanyahu, Lieberman join forces and plan to merge right-wing parties

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his coalition partner, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, announced plans to merge their right-wing parties ahead of the election next year.[....] “We are asking for a mandate from the public to lead Israel against the security threats foremost preventing Iran from arming itself with nuclear weapons and the struggle against terror.”[....]

However, the move to unify still has to pass approval by Likud’s convention, Israeli newspaper Haaretz said. The newspaper said the merger “may be an attempt to overpower a possible unification between centrist and left-wing parties.” [....] Opposition lawmakers said the alliance would alienate moderate voters.

Japanese engineer creates wheelchair that can walk up stairs

An engineer at Japan’s Chiba Institute of Technology has designed a new robotic wheelchair with the amazing capability to climb stairs. In a demonstration video, lead engineer Shuro Nakajima shows off the device’s capabilities, easily overcoming curbs and flights of stairs simply by pushing a joystick.

“Each of the four wheels is independent of one another, so they can each react independently when the chair comes up across some sort of step,” he told Reuters. “They aren’t tied into responding in the same way in [t]he same time.”

“What that means is that it can climb, whether it approaches the step straight on or at an angle, it’s fine either way,” he added. “In that sense, we’ve really pushed wheelchair technology forward.”[....]

Are you calling me dumb? And not looking at it isn’t going to make him change his view of PBO. These people have been disrespectful of President Obama since the day he announced he was running. They will continue to do so as long as he is in the white house. And I will continue to point at them and laugh at their ignorant, racist asses. PBO has the respect and admiration of millions of people all over the world, this idiot can’t touch that.

    Peggy Noonan, Busted

    A reader writes:

You overlooked a notable attendee of Obama’s January 2009 conservative dinner:

“Obama Tuesday night trekked to the Chevy Chase, Md., home of conservative columnist George F. Will to talk politics and get to know some of his fiercest intellectual adversaries: Charles Krauthammer, William Kristol, Larry Kudlow, David Brooks, Rich Lowry, Peggy Noonan, Michael Barone, and Paul Gigot.”

This is the same Peggy Noonan who wrote today:

Obama misread his Republican opponents from day one. If he had been large-spirited and conciliatory he would have effectively undercut them, and kept them from uniting.

    MORE: http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2012/10/peggy-noonan-busted.html

    • conlakappa

She is such a colossal dumbass. It was fairly big news when he went there for the dinner. The left howled and the right tried to act like it was the respect they were due. Whatever, I say.

    • Town

TRANSLATION: IF HE HAD BEEN SUFFICIENTLY MEEK AND WILLING TO BE A PUPPET INSTEAD OF ACTING UPPITY LIKE HE WAS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITES STATES OR SOMETHING, WE MIGHT HAVE WORKED WITH HIM, BUT HE REMINDED US HE WAS COMMANDER IN CHIEF AND NOT THE BUTLER SO IT’S HIS FAULT WE DIDN’T WANT TO WORK WITH HIM. OR SOMETHING.

      • JojoRaze

Whoop there it is! Tell it all Town.

Since my memory is still with me I recall PBO having dinners with left-leaning pundits and right leaning ones separately right have the inauguration. he also met with presidential historians. So Noonan needs to sat down

      • nasani

GO AHEAD AND TELL IT, TOWN! Republicans wanted President Obama to behave like Clarence Thomas has been behaving ever since he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Instead, they encountered a self-confident man who, though willing to try to find common grounds, was not willing to surrender his responsibilities as President and Command in Chief. You see, Republicans love Blacks who do as they are told. Actually, I think this is also the case with some of the so called white and black progressives (e.g. Cornel West and Tavis Smiley) who also wanted President Obama to do everything they told him to do exactly the way they told him to do them. They too could not stomach an “uppity” Black man who acted like “he was the President of the United States.”

    • creolechild

Republicans misread their Democratic President from day one. If they had been serious about their jobs and willing to work with his administration, he wouldn’t have had to effectively undercut them by taking his case to the public, thereby outing them as the petty and trifling asses which they’re known to be.

      There…fixed it for her.

Reaction to Romney’s Economic Speech: ‘All About Obama’, ‘Uniformly Negative’

[....] Despite promising that he was indeed finally laying out major economic news of a Romney plan, Mitt Romney stumbled his way through a stump speech attack on Obama that included no economic news, no specifics, but tons of negativity aimed at the President. Speaking at a campaign rally in Ames, Iowa, Romney failed to impress. Here’s a roundup of reaction:[....]

Justin Wolfers ‏@justinwolfers Turns out that Romney’s “big economic speech” today, was just a placeholder, so that he could go on the attack if the GDP numbers were bad.

Obama and Dems ‘Absolutely Crushing’ Romney and GOP in Early Voting in Nevada

On MSNBC this morning, Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston said that President Obama and Democrats are “absolutely crushing” Mitt Romney and Republicans in early voting in the state. He’s right. Democrats lead Republicans on every metric: mail ballots returned, in-person early voting, and total ballots cast.[....]

[....] Voter registration among Latinos is up by 15% in Nevada from 2008. The Obama ground game is on second to none, and get out the vote is working in Nevada. The Republican Party’s gamble on the small tent of only white men is not paying off in Nevada so far.

I guess that would explain this:

Wynn Resorts, the third-largest casino operator in the U.S., recently mailed a “2012 General Election Voter Guide” to its 12,000 employees in Nevada. The bound booklet, obtained by The Huffington Post, identifies candidates whom the Las Vegas-based company supports, leading to what one worker described as a feeling of being pressured to vote for candidates favored by the boss. This pressure is compounded by the behavior of company CEO Steve Wynn, who has used corporate time and media to attack President Barack Obama’s policies.

      • Camille

Steve Wynn is despicable. He is the epitome of a hateful, greedy, condescending and entitled man who thinks money regardless of how it is acquired trumps all else.

This megalomaniac is yet another face of and a poster child for and a constant reminder of what an America turned over to arrogant, callous, controlling, selfish, greedy, heartless, twisted, devious oligarchs, courtesy of a Mitt Romney type, will devolve to.

Hostage holding and taking of the country and the economy, exploitation of the economically disadvantaged, strong-arming of anyone and everyone, destructive ego trips –

This is an America we can not afford and we will not sign on to.

The Entire GOP ‘Debt Crisis’ Myth Dispelled – By A Conservative!

[....] If there’s one article of faith in Washington (and elsewhere), it’s the idea that the United States might get into a debt crisis if it doesn’t get its fiscal house in order. This is not true. The reason why it’s not true is because we live in a fiat currency system, where the United States government can create an infinite number of dollars at no cost to meet its obligations. A Treasury bill is a promise that the government will give you US dollars–something that the United States government can produce infinitely and at no cost.

This is important to remember because it is part of the same argument that the right uses to declare Social Security “bankrupt.” Yes, Congress looted the trust fund but the IOUs left behind are Treasury bills, the single most secure form of investment in the world. Period. How secure? It’s so secure that other countries are buying Treasury bills left and right AT A LOSS. You read that correctly: Interest rates are so low that other countries are literally paying us to hold their money to keep it out of a volatile world market. If that doesn’t convince you that our economy is sound, you’re insane. Or a Republican. Which is really the same thing these days.[....]

Wireless carriers on track to provide overage alerts to customers

Good news for anyone who’s suffered from bill shock: The FCC announced today that wireless carriers have fulfilled their commitment to start providing free alerts to customers both before and after they exceed their usage limits.[....]

Today is the one-year deadline for the agreement that was announced by the FCC and the wireless trade group CTIA last year. Wireless carriers, including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon, agreed to notify customers as they approached their limits on data, voice, or text, as well as international roaming charges. Companies agreed to provide at least two types of alerts by today, and all four types of alerts by April 17.

You Don’t Have To Be Stupid To Be A Republican Legislator – It Just Seems That Way

[....] I do remember back “in the good old days” (which weren’t all that good, really) when you could disagree with a Republican on many things, but you didn’t have cause to doubt their intelligence or sanity. You knew they arguing from the same facts as you were, that they acknowledged an objective reality. Those days are gone, judging from current evidence. I can’t read the news feeds these days without getting another example. I don’t have to look for them, they just keep coming with depressing regularity.[....]

[....] That’s a small selection I have. As I said earlier, it’s a constant litany, and it’s everywhere. Republicans legislators seem to be inhabiting an alternate reality, where science is false, magic is real; taxes and government are bad, except for taxing poor people to pay when they want something from the government; history is fiction; and women and blacks don’t really have … full human rights. You can’t debate them when they’re not even working out of the same reality as the rest of us. Someday, I hope we get back to what was, in “the good old days.” But for now, it seems that you do have to be stupid to be a Republican legislator. The evidence is saying that’s the safest bet.

    To: Nadine Maenza
    Executive Director, Patriot Voices:

[....] Allow me to enlighten you, to whatever extent women like yourself are educable. The Obama campaign and the Democratic party are not suggesting anything. Instead, what they have consistently done is take action where women’s issues are concerned, while Romney and the Republicans continue to wage war on women’s reproductive rights, access to contraception and abortion and equal wages for equal work.[....]

Who ya tryin’ to kid, little Judas Goat? The GOP has proven time and again its absolute disdain for these women, along with the children they are trying to house, clothe, feed and keep in good health. These women are part of that 47% Romney dismissed as irresponsible parasites who stubbornly refuse to take responsibility for their own lives. And here you are attempting to lead your fellow women to the slaughterhouse that a Romney/Ryan administration would construct within minutes of taking the oath of office.[....]

I note that you have been given the title Executive Director, Patriot Voices. No doubt the job came with a promise of thirty pieces of silver per annum. You might want to consider using that largess to buy a fuckin’ clue. Don’t Be Fooled? Don’t worry – we real women are not. You, on the other hand, are a different storybook altogether. Condi Rice Pours Cold Water On ‘Benghazi-Gate’
By Hayes Brown on Oct 25, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice broke with the majority of her party last night on Fox News, as she tried to hit the brakes on the right wing’s politicization of the recent attack in Libya.

[...] RICE: But when things are unfolding very, very quickly, it’s not always easy to know what is really going on on the ground. And to my mind, the really important questions here are about how information was collected. Did the various agencies really coordinate and share intelligence in the way that we had hoped, with the reforms that were made after 9/11?

So there’s a big picture to be examined here. But we don’t have all of the pieces, and I think it’s easy to try and jump to conclusions about what might have happened here. It’s probably better to let the relevant bodies do their work.

Romney has a reading comprehension problem, just like the troll in yesterday’s open thread:

Despite Romney Claim, Chrysler Isn’t Moving Any Auto Production To China
By Travis Waldron on Oct 26, 2012 at 10:55 am

Mitt Romney, attempting to bolster his case to Ohio voters, misinterpreted a story and passed on an outright lie at a rally in the swing state yesterday. Reacting to a Bloomberg News story about auto manufacturer Chrysler’s plans to open a plant in China, Romney said at a rally in Defiance, Ohio that the company was “thinking of moving all production to China,” and that he would prevent such action by fighting for “every good job in America”:

“I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep — now owned by the Italians — is thinking of moving all production to China,” Romney said at a rally in Defiance, Ohio, home to a General Motors powertrain plant. “I will fight for every good job in America. I’m going to fight to make sure trade is fair, and if it’s fair America will win.”

The Bloomberg News story, however, doesn’t say that Chrysler plans to move “all production to China.” Instead, it says that Fiat, which now owns Chrysler, is planning to open Chinese factories where it will make one of its most popular lines, Jeep, for Chinese consumers. Chrysler isn’t planning to shift production away from the United States. Instead, it will add factories in China to keep up with the nation’s growing demand for automobiles:

Harry Reid hospitalized after car crash, in good condition
    October 26th, 2012

    Posted by CNN Political Unit

(CNN) – Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, was released from the hospital on Friday afternoon after he sustained non-life threatening injuries following an accident in his motorcade.

A spokeswoman for the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Karen Gordon, said Reid was released shortly before 4 p.m. local time, and was in good condition after the accident, which occurred as his caravan of four vehicles was traveling northbound on Interstate 15.

Reid’s Senate office said in a statement the top Democrat walked into the hospital on his own, and was wearing a seatbelt when the accident happened. He experienced rib and hip contusions, and was cleared for release. Other members of Reid’s contingent had minor injuries, the statement read, and were evaluated at the same hospital. Reid’s wife was not in the car.

Who knew that for Chris Matthews there are actually topics that are off limits! Topics he just won’t let his guests touch and will shut them down if they attempted.

    Never saw that till today.

Chris Matthews will have Newt Gingrich, Rudy Guilliani, etc. Who have called President Obama every name under the sun on his show laughing and backslapping.

Chris Matthews will rave about Haley Barbor and Chris Christie telling anyone who cares to listen, what fantastic politicians they are.

Chris Matthews will without missing a step, continue to propagate and perpetuate every birther and racist story thrown out there about President Obama – making absolutely no effort to nip them in the bud – seeing them as only meaty and amusing topics to be discussed with the same folks perpetrating them.

But today, I saw Chris Matthews forcefully shut down Joy Ann Reid at the mere mention of Mormonism. He would not let Joy make a simple statement that even remotely mentioned Mitt Romney and his faith in the same sentence!

    Chris Matthews who has squeezed out and continues to exploit, clown around with and rehashes without any meaningful attempts at debunking, every last meaty tidbit from provenly malicious and false personal attacks on President Obama;

Chris Matthews who just happens to pal around with, admires, gushes on and is personal friends with some of the worst perpetrators of the most vicious racist and birther attacks on President Obama – and even has these people on his show to continue to to spew their crap unchallenged–

This same Chris Matthews now wants you to believe that a mere reference by Joy Ann Reid to Mormonism, in a bid to make a legitimate connection about Mitt Romney, his faith and his statements on policy, crosses the line.

You can’t just make this shit up!

    • Aquagranny911

Matthews can BITE THE BIG CACTUS! I despise that nasty little pendejo. I have felt this way for a long time & it does not matter to me that he “sometimes” supports PBO or attacks racism. I have no time for his sorry caca.

    • lamh35

I love Joy Ann Reid but I knew this was coming. Tweety finds people who surprises him and then they say something that he doesn’t agree with and then all of a sudden he shuts them down.

Joy Ann had become Tweety’s go to girl. She actually was having more airtime than Nia-Malika and Michelle Bernarnd that last 2 sistas who Tweety loved on his show.

I figured it’d be something. Tweety has always been very fair-weathered and schizto.

MSNBC needs to just give Joy Reid her own show or replace Tam’Ron Hall and let her do her thing.

    Dear Mr. President,

My name is Eric Smalls. At a young age I was inspired by NASA and their expeditions to the moon. As a career I would love to build robots to explore the first earth-like planets and beyond. However, when I was three years old my mother passed away due to breast cancer. For several months my family was homeless and forced to live out of a car. With my dad doing his best to take care of my sister and I, those years were very difficult and college was just a pipe dream. As we lived paycheck to paycheck, the three of us shared two dollars a day for food. Some days, my sister and I were faced with choosing between going to school or eating that day.

For a while I feared I might never be able to achieve my dreams. But I was motivated to change my circumstance. I got back on my feet and went to live – — – –THIS – ->in Philadelphia with my grandmother. I started attending an engineering and science academy in North Philly. I was determined to achieve my dreams. It was largely due to your STEM initiatives that I found my calling as the President of the robotics club at my high school. Chronicling Mitt’s Mendacity, Vol. XL

    By Steve Benen

    Fri Oct 26, 2012 2:23 PM EDT

A joke made the rounds this week, which resonated with me. It goes like this: a man dies, goes to heaven, stands before St. Peter, and see a huge wall of clocks. The man asks what all the clocks are for and St. Peter explains, “These are lie clocks. Everyone on earth has a lie clock. Every time a person lies, the clock hands move.”

Pointing to one, the man says, “Whose clock is that?”

“That’s Mother Teresa’s,” St. Peter answers. “The hands have never moved, indicating she never told a lie.”

“Incredible,” the man responds. “And whose clock is that?”

St. Peter responds, “That’s Abraham Lincoln’s. The hands moved twice telling us he told two lies in his entire life.”

“Where is Mitt Romney’s clock?” the man asks.

“Romney’s clock is in Jesus’ office,” St. Peter says. “He’s using it as a ceiling fan.”

It’s obviously just a joke, but it reinforces an increasingly common observation about Romney’s casual relationship with the truth. Consider, for example, the 40th installment of my weekly series, chronicling Mitt’s mendacity.

If he didn’t torch all his bridges to the GOP before…he did tonight.

    TRANSCRIPT

COLONEL LAWRENCE WILKERSON told Ed Schultz & Audience this:

My party, unfortunately, is the bastion of those people, not all of them but most of them, who are still basing their decisions on race. Let me just be candid: My party is full of racists. And the real reason a considerable portion of my party wants president Obama out of the White House has nothing to do with the content of his character, nothing to do with his competence as Commander-in-Chief, as President, and everything to do with the color of his skin. And that’s despicable.

    – - –The Treasury Department, rejecting a subpoena threat from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is citing executive branch “confidentiality interests” in its refusal to turn over documents on an IRS rule allowing subsidies in federal health insurance exchanges.

“Obamacare” opponents argue that the law only allows subsidies to flow through state-run health exchanges — the new marketplaces for health insurance that are supposed to begin in 2014 — and that the IRS rule oversteps legal bounds. Under the law, the Department of Health and Human Services is supposed to set up federal exchanges in states that don’t build their own.
