*snicker*…sure…that’s why you left. Cuz you didn’t know where half the funds were coming from…yeah…riiiiiiiiight. More like you’re pushed out and probably know somebody’s going to jail over this mess very soon.

Dick Armey: “This Kind of Secrecy is Why I Left” FreedomWorks

The Sunlight Foundation, a group that pushes for more transparent politics and policymaking, on Friday reported that federal records show that two mystery companies in September donated over $12 million to the super PAC of FreedomWorks, the tea party-supporting organization that this week was rocked by the abrupt resignation of its chairman, Dick Armey, the former Republican House majority leader. These contributions accounted for more than half of the $23.2 million the group raised for the 2012 campaign, and they came from two shadowy Knoxville-Tennessee-based firms—Specialty Group, Inc., and Pike Development LLC—that publicly have no reason to exist other than apparently to make contributions and mask the true source of the money. Moreover, Armey tells Mother Jones that he knew nothing about the donations or the origins of the cash and that he quit FreedomWorks partly because of a lack of transparency.

Nevada Election Official Sues Tea Party Group For Violating State Election Disclosure |

Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller (D) filed a civil lawsuit this weekend against the Koch group Americans for Prosperity. The suit alleges AFP violated state law by not filing required registration and donor reports when it waded into a state Senate election this summer. AFP was behind several mailers targeting Nevada Senate candidate Kelvin Atkinson (D) over his support for renewable energy. The group also ran tens of millions of dollars in ads nationally, although AFP calls itself “an organization of grassroots leaders” that has avoided “express advocacy,” by not using words like vote or oppose in its ads. Miller seeks civil penalties and a court order for the organization to file contribution and expense reports for its ads against Atkinson.

Americans In High-Deductible Plans Are Skipping Out On Preventative Care Because They Don’t Know It’s Free

[….] High-deductible plans — which increasing numbers of employers are beginning to offer to their workers — charge enrollees lower monthly premiums, but significantly higher out-of-pocket deductibles. And Kaiser Health News reports, consumers enrolled in those plans often don’t know that certain services — such as regular screenings and checkups — don’t carry the same high out-of-pocket price tag as the other services on their plan, leading them to skip out on that preventative care.[….]

The condoms of the future could disappear when you’re done with them

Seriously, condoms are great for public health and for controlling how many babies you want to have, but they’ve got a LOT of room for improvement. They’re messy, they’re a pain to use, and some people are allergic to latex. Which is why researchers at the University of Washington are trying to improve the prophylactic paradigm, replacing the humble cocksheath with a space-age nano-fabric that’s actually woven out of medication.

These hypercondoms would be made of electrically spun fabric — electrospinning makes for incredibly fine threads. The fibers are so small and so easy to manipulate that they can be used to carry medications, more efficiently than other delivery methods. You could electrically spin nanofibers made out of polymer, chemical contraceptives, and anti-STD meds, and then weave them into a barrier that would be able to block sperm, destroy it, neutralize any extant germs, and then dissolve in a puff of vagina-smoke.[…]

    – – — – Court Again Strikes Down Florida Attempt To Privatize Prison Health Care – –

    — – – –A Florida court has ruled for the second time that the state Department of Corrections improperly circumvented the legislative process to privatize prison health care. Last October, some state legislators had attempted to privatize the state’s prison health care by folding the funding into budget proviso language. That attempt was held unconstitutional by a Florida judge, who said the legislature could only do so through a separate bill. The legislature then proposed a separate bill in February 2012 that, unsurprisingly, could not garner enough votes to pass.

But that failure wouldn’t satisfy legislators bent on outsourcing the state’s prison health care to private corporations. This time, they were able to include in the legislature-reviewed appropriations bill funding for private prisons in one South Florida region. Seeking to also privatize prison health care in three other regions, the Department of Corrections sought additional funding from the state’s Legislative Budget Commission rather than the full legislature. The LBC granted funds for all four regions and increased the budget from 41 million to 58 million — a move also struck down by Leon County Judge Jackie Fulford:
    – – -SNIP – —

Authorizing and funding privatizing health care services in Florida’s prisons is the prerogative of the full legislature and not that of the Legislative Budget Commission.

Because of Hansberry, patients now have decreased hospital stays and more efficient surgeries. His breakthrough was fueled by his loss at his eighth grade science fair at Darnell Cookman School of Medical Arts. The school has been described as the first medical magnet school in the country.

Hansberry’s research began last summer during his internship at the University of Florida ‘s Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research in Jacksonville, Florida.

Now at age 18, Hansberry, a.k.a. “The next Charles Drew” is a freshman bio-medical engineering student at Florida A&M University. — —Yet Another Reason Why Romney Lost

    — –Romney’s chief campaign strategist Stuart Stevens is still acting like an idiot. Here he blames Hurricane Sandy for losing the election:

“After the storm, I never had a good feeling. Not that the storm impacted things so much, per se, but these races — a race like this is a lot like an NBA game. It’s all about ball control at the end… We went from having these big rallies around the country to literally sitting around in hotel rooms and there was just nothing we could do about it.”

See, it’s not about rallies or crowd sizes. It’s all about strong leadership. Romney’s response to both Benghazi and Sandy were pathetic and weak.

    – -THIS COMMENT: – —When I was a teacher I had a maxim. If there was a list of 20 things that high school kids (and their parents) think of as the reason why they got a lower grade than they expected, or why they failed the course, #21 on that list is that their work simply isn’t very good. I used to tell them, You want a better grade? Do a better job. They had no idea what I was talking about.

The same, it seems, applies to politicians. If there was a list of 20 things the Romney campaign, the GOP and their fans/enablers might think of as the reasons why they lost, #21 on the list is that they had a bad candidate who ran a bad campaign on bad ideas and bad policies, and did a bad job convincing people otherwise. And lied a lot.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York’s new white independent Senate caucus

    by Armando

    New York Times:

[A]ll of [New York’s] statewide elected officials are white politicians. And in Albany, Republicans and a group of dissident Democrats have taken control of the State Senate by forming a coalition that would consist almost entirely of white lawmakers. The coalition would prevent the Senate Democratic caucus, which includes 14 blacks and Hispanics and is the only legislative caucus in Albany led by a nonwhite person, from taking power. Democrats have 31 of the 63 seats in the Senate, and are expected to win seats in two districts where votes are still being counted; Republicans have 30 seats.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo lent his tacit support to this shut out of non-white legislators from the Senate leadership. And, unfortunately, Gov. Cuomo and his father, Mario Cuomo, have not always been, shall we say, especially well attuned to the yearnings of non-white folk. (See, e.g., Mario Cuomo’s placement of the Staten Island secession referendum on the ballot of the 1993 NYC mayoral race, Andrew Cuomo’s failed bid against Carl McCall, etc.)
And this could be a political problem for Gov. Andrew Cuomo if he has national ambitions:

We are in a dramatic and graphic retreat on black and Latino inclusion in state government,” Mr. [Al] Sharpton said, adding of Mr. Cuomo, “If any of the statements about him having ambition for national politics is true, how does he go to the country having presided over the retreat of inclusion in his own Legislature? How does he do that?”
