Brought over from this morning’s thread

    Good afternoon, POU Fam!

I hope all is well. Thought provoking question for you: is Christopher Dorner this century’s Nat Turner? Discuss.

    • Admiral_Komack

      He’s just an embittered murderer.

    • jds09

My mama used to tell us that black people are like pieces of coal. The crushing, grinding, pulverizing pressures of being black in America either turned us to dust or to diamonds. Dorner got ground down.

      • GOVCHRIS1988

THIS! The 6 diamonds are in the White House right now.

      • isonprize

JDS, I really like this. Thanks to your momma.

      • nathkatun7

        You speak TRUTH, jds09!

    • trose1

No, I read his manifesto. After I read it I felt sad. He snapped under the pressure of being a Black man in America. I wish he could have been helped by someone. He seemed to be an intelligent man. Beware the copy cat. Murdering people is not the solution.

    • AxelFoley

I wish he didn’t murder innocents as he’s alleged to have done, but can’t say I feel sorry for the LAPD. Matter fact, I heard one of the ladies they shot yesterday died, so fuck ’em. They’re so trigger happy to get this dude, they killed an innocent woman. I hope that brotha goes out like a supernova.

      • AxelFoley

OK, I’ma have to recant my line about one of the ladies they shot yesterday dying. Been looking on the ‘net for anything that confirms that, but nada. I heard a listener on Rev. Al’s show this afternoon say one lady died, but like I said, I can’t find anything that confirms that.

No matter, the cops in that situation need to be fired, brought up on charges, convicted, and serve hard time for that shit.

    • Tafr

First of all I will not condone Dorner killing those innocent people. Condoning that would make me no better than the Zimmerman fans. Dorner should be brought to trial but we all know that will never happen. Dorner is a dead man walking.

As far as him being the the next Nat Turner. Well Sag I believe that will never happen. Nat Turner has been credited for starting the civil war resulting in freeing slaves. There will be none of that in LA because the LAPD will make themselves out as victims. The LAPD has been hunting black men for years with no one batting an eye. Trust the LAPD will go on hunting brown and black men whether they catch Dorner or not.

I do believe that folks, especially white folks, should take a step back and think about the incidents that led to Durner’s breakdown. This man did what he was supposed to do. He went to school, served his country, by all accounts he was a decent man. However, being a decent black man does not guarantee you a free ticket from racism. I think that realization is what finally broke him.

I do not believe this man was born a monster. The stress of racism broke him down. I am not saying that killing those people was the right way to go. I do believe that for him he felt it was the only way.

      • creolechild

Tafr, I agree with what everything you’ve stated. There are no excuses for his actions, but this article discusses possible triggers that may explain what caused Dorner to go on a rampage. (I wish I knew how to draw a line through the word “perceived” in this article because racism, as it is experienced by POC in this country, is anything but “perceived.”)

Perceived Racism May Impact Black Americans’ Mental Health – Posted on November 16, 2011

For black American adults, perceived racism may cause mental health symptoms similar to trauma and could lead to some physical health disparities between blacks and other populations in the United States, according to a new study published by the American Psychological Association.[….] “We focused on black American adults because this is a population that has reported, on average, more incidents of racism than other racial minority groups and because of the potential links between racism and not only mental health, but physical health as well,” said lead author Alex Pieterse, PhD, of the University at Albany, State University of New York.

Black Americans’ psychological responses to racism are very similar to common responses to trauma, such as somatization, which is psychological distress expressed as physical pain; interpersonal sensitivity; and anxiety, according to the study. Individuals who said they experienced more and very stressful racism were more likely to report mental distress, the authors said.[….] “The relationship between perceived racism and self-reported depression and anxiety is quite robust, providing a reminder that experiences of racism may play an important role in the health disparities phenomenon,” Pieterse said. “For example, African-Americans have higher rates of hypertension, a serious condition that has been associated with stress and depression.”

The authors recommended that therapists assess racism experiences as part of standard procedure when treating black Americans, and that future studies focus on how discrimination is perceived in specific settings, such as work, online or in school.

These emos cling to their white privilege just like your typical right wing extremists. Whether it’s Bradley Manning or the Reddit founder who killed himself, or white Americans who take up arms against this country, they just don’t want them punished. It’s like, they think they can do whatever they want, no matter how illegal, and should not have to be punished for it.

    It’s ridiculous.

Ha! Has The Daily Show ever had to do an on-air story retraction before last night?:

    WATCH: Obama Embarrasses Stewart

“After going “all in” with Wednesday’s coverage slamming the Obama administration’s memo that outlined the legal case for the controversial drone attacks that have assassinated American citizens suspected of terrorist activity, Jon Stewart was disappointed to find out Obama blindsided Stewart in a key point of his criticism.

When “The Daily Show” taped at around 6:30 on Wednesday, Stewart called for the Obama administration to give congress access to those documents. Unfortunately for Stewart, the administration did just that between the time that “The Daily Show” was taped and by the time it aired on Comedy Central. Oops.”

    • Alma98

That headline should read Stewart embarrasses Stewart, they all think they’re smarter than PBO.

    • PBO stays being a step ahead of these mofos.

    • jds09

Stewart needs to apologize for hinting that PBO was lying about skeet shooting before the picture was released.

      • conlakappa

That would need to be added the list of things he’d have to apologize to the Administration for. The ego on that guy and his team of sniveling, Chris Hayes-like writers.

President Obama is poised to sign off on a new internal review of U.S. nuclear weapons strategy that would reduce the arsenal by one-third, resulting in billions in savings to the Pentagon and Energy Department.

  • Rand Paul is gonna give the Tea Party response to PBO’s SOTU address….

    • GOVCHRIS1988

So its Timid Babalu aye and Aqua Buddha Moonshit responding to our eloquent President. Nice.

      • conlakappa

So wrong about “Timid Babalu aye,” so wrong. Is that a Bakersfield P.D. reference?

        • GOVCHRIS1988

No. Its a Desi Arnaz reference.

          • conlakappa

Oooh, I remember the original but there is a great scene in Bakersfield P.D. with Tony Plana that is a classic in a different way.

    • nathkatun7

In other words, we are going to see two Republicans: Right wing
(Marco Rubio), and Extreme Right wing (Rand Paul), respond to PBO’s SOTU. Isn’t that something? One Republican is not enough to respond to President Obama’s SOTU. You need at least two. Who knows, we may see three Republican responses next year:Moderate Republican, Right wing Republican, and Extreme right wing Republican. I wouldn’t even be surprised if the media solicited a response from Democratic leftist and bluedog opponents of President Obama who generally dominate as pundits on the 24-7 cable news.

What else is new. This is what happens every Sunday on those so called respectable news shows. Some Sundays, the ratio is about 5:1 Republican to Democrats. When they do try to be fair and book 5:3 Republicans to Democrats, they always make sure that at least 1 or 2 of those Democrats are anti-President Obama. I am just so sick of the so called mainstream media. From day one of his Presidency, the U.S. mainstream media has been right there enabling Obama haters. Why didn’t the media give the Progressive Caucus the privilege of responding to G.W. Bush’s SOTU? And why didn’t the media give Ross Perot, who won 20% of the popular votes, the platform to respond to all of Bill Clinton’s SOTU? And these so called journalists and media owners claim that their despicable behavior towards President Obama has nothing to do with his race/color! They must think we are all idiots,

  • The Rising Tide of Anti-Black Racism
    Jamelle Bouie February 7, 2013

…Edsall runs though recent research from a variety of sources to show the extent to which President Obama’s term has coincided with a sharp increase in the proportion of Americans who express anti-black attitudes. In one survey, for example, “The percentage of voters with explicit anti-black attitudes rose from 47.6 in 2008 and 47.3 percent in 2010 to 50.9 percent in 2012.” This wasn’t a uniform change—not only were Republicans more likely to express anti-black attitudes, but people who identified themselves as Republicans in 2012 expressed such attitudes more often than their counterparts of 2008:

In 2008, Pasek and his collaborators note, the proportion of people expressing anti-Black attitudes was 31 percent among Democrats, 49 percent among independents, and 71 percent among Republicans. By 2012, the numbers had gone up. “The proportion of people expressing anti-Black attitudes,” they write, “was 32 percent among Democrats, 48 percent among independents, and 79 percent among Republicans.”

Edsall sees this as a crucial through-line in the ongoing story of GOP extremism. Growing racial resentment has deepened the conservatism of right-wing Republicans, and contributed to their total rejection of President Obama and the Democratic Party in 2010 and 2012.

A Republican Sequester Self Destruction Could Cost Them at Least 10 House Seats

[….] House Republicans have lost every fight that they have picked with President Obama since 2011, but this fact isn’t stopping them from thinking that they can let the sequester cuts happen and the president will take the blame. This is the same rationale that House Republicans have using during every one of their self-created crisis, because they seem oblivious to the fact that Obama is at least 4-5 times more popular than they are. The end result is always the same. Obama beats them over the head with the bully pulpit, gets public opinion on his side, and at the very last second House Republicans cave.

News from today suggests that House Republicans remain so confident/detached from reality that some of them are willing to throw the country back into recession so that they can blame Obama. However, Politico is reporting that Democrats are already targeting 10 Republican held congressional districts that are heavily dependent on the defense industry[….]

Rahm Emanuel to Chicago: Eat your f^%$ing veggies!

Not many people would see value in a retired Chicago Transit Authority bus with 500,000 miles on the odometer, a slow engine, and seats bursting at the seams. But in late 2011, a group of Chicagoans looking for a way to transport groceries into their deprived neighborhood had a vision. They bought the bus for $1, and with grant money, made repairs, tore out the seats, and gave it a fresh paint job and a fitting new name: Fresh Moves.

Today, Fresh Moves, a nonprofit serving the city’s south and west sides, has two buses in its fleet, with a third coming in June. When growing season arrives, the crates onboard overflow with locally grown fruits and vegetables. And the lines of residents awaiting its arrival grow longer and longer. If Mayor Rahm Emanuel has his way, services such as Fresh Moves will soon take root and flourish citywide under a completely revamped food system designed to change the way Chicagoans eat.[….]

Obama Opposed Syria War Plan from Clinton, Petraeus, Panetta, Gen. Dempsey

Let’s give the White House and President Obama, personally, credit for blocking the hawks in his administration from going to war in Syria. Last week, we learned that Hillary Clinton and David Petraeus, now thankfully pursuing other opportunities and spending more time with their families, had cooked up a plan to arm and train the ragtag Syrian rebels, thus getting the United States directly involved in that horrible civil war. Now we learn that Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs—both of whom are about to join Clinton and Petraeus in the private sector—also backed the Clinton-Petraeus plan.

Who was against it? Obama.[….] Neither Mr. Panetta nor General Dempsey explained why President Obama did not heed their recommendation. But senior American officials have said that the White House was worried about the risks of becoming more deeply involved in the Syria crisis, including the possibility that weapons could fall into the wrong hands. Let’s hope it stays killed. Are you listening, John Kerry, Chuck Hagel, John Brennan?

I won’t be surprised of a joint effort somewhere down the line by these clowns to cast a dark shadow on PBO for benefit of their own legacies. I don’t trust anyone around him anymore. They’d all have a long ways to go to change my mind. And Mz. Clinton- I will never forgive her. Ever.

      • jziglar

Well Leon Panetta was going to leave sometime ago but this is another reason why Hillary should not be President and it’s because she is very hawkish. Like you I am tired of the Clintons and I really don’t want her taking the reigns after Obama leaves.

      • nathkatun7

People suffering from amnesia forget what President Obama said during a debate with Hillary Clinton before the 2008 California primary. He specifically said that, as President, he wanted to change the Washington mindset of trying to find any excuse to go to war. Both John McCain and Lindsey Graham are always eager to send young men and women to war even in those situations when national security interests of the United States are not being threatened. It would have been much easier, politically, for President Obama to side with those eager to go to war. But he chose otherwise. This should put to rest the stupid charge that he easily caves.

CAUGHT: Whistleblower Reveals Silicon Valley Start-Up Paid Workers $2.66 Per Hour … In Pesos (VIDEO)

Bad news for cheap bosses and the GOP, good news for workers – Obama’s U.S. Department of Labor actually enforces the Fair Labor Standards Act.[….] As previously reported by Kurhi, the leading Sunnyvale, CA clean energy start-up had been underpaying 14 Mexican contract workers for two years, at the equivalent of $2.66 per hour in pesos.[….] Oh, and the workers often toiled over 50 hours per week and received no overtime pay. Kurhi’s colleague Brandon Bailey also reports that the workers were here on visitors’ visas, “which generally don’t allow [visa] holders to work while they are here.”

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wages and Hours division — via signed court order from U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh — ordered Bloom Energy to pay $31,922 in back wages, $31,922 in damages, and $6,160 in civil penalties ($70,004.00 total). The Department of Labor requires minimum wage and overtime to be paid regardless of the workers’ immigration status.[….]

Senators Introduce Bipartisan Bill To Strengthen America’s Mental Health System

As part of a wide-ranging effort to address gun violence in the wake of December’s mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, a bipartisan group of senators has introduced the Excellence In Mental Health Act, legislation that aims to strengthen America’s mental health safety net by providing behavioral health care facilities more access to federal funding and consolidating disparate elements of the U.S. mental health safety net.[….]

[….] It is also encouraging that the bill includes mental health resources for veterans and substance abusers. Military suicides reached a record high in January, and substance abusers — as a group — are among the most likely to suffer from a co-occurring mental illness.[….]

    — – Jazz Legend Donald Byrd Dead At 80

    – —- —Influential jazz icon Donald Byrd (pictured) died Monday at the age of 80. The trumpeter’s passing was confirmed by his nephew, Alex Bugnon, and the cause of death is undisclosed, reports U.K.’s The Guardian.

    — -Reportedly, Byrd’s family had been trying to keep the entertainer’s death private, but Bugnon blew the lid off, and according to Billboard, publicly announced the passing, ”I have no more patience for this unnecessary shroud of secrecy placed over his death by certain members of his immediate family,” he wrote via Facebook and e-mails. He also revealed that Byrd lived in Delaware but that his funeral would be in Detroit.

Byrd was born December 9, 1932, in Motor City, Detroit. Even before he completed high school, the gifted musician played gigs with one of the country’s premier jazz vibraphonists Lionel Hampton. Not being one of those musicians whose studies take a back seat to their craft, Byrd managed to graduate from Wayne State University and receive a Master’s from the Manhattan School of Music.

Throughout his career, Byrd worked with musical icons, such as Art Blakely, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Thelonius Monk, and Herbie Hancock. In the ’70s, he formed the fusion group The Blackbyrds, and the group quickly spiraled up the music charts pumping out memorable R&B-meets-jazz hits, such as “Walking in Rhythm,” ”Rock Creek Park,” and “Happy Music.” Even though Byrd’s roots were in bebop, he later sashayed into soul and funk, particularly jazz fusion.

—–Obama ‘likes’ draft of SOTU address

——–President Obama had a first draft of his State of the Union address in his hands by Monday night and liked what he saw, his new top speechwriter said.

“He likes it, which is a big relief for us,” Cody Keenan, who will become Obama’s director of speechwriting when Jon Favreau leaves the administration the end of the month, said in a video released by the White House on Friday.

Keenan said the process of writing the president’s big speech, set for Tuesday night, began after Election Day in November. He also showed off two large white binders filled with documents from the White House’s policy staffs.

Thought just hit me–don’t know if anyone else here has already made this point, but is the emo left up in arms over the LAPD showing without a shadow of a doubt that they are going to kill that brotha–an American citizen, I might add–as much as they are about DROOOOOONES and some terrorist’s “rights”?

    • nathkatun7

I’ve not heard even a whisper from the emos about this. This, by the way, includes the ACLU.

    • morphus

The weasel word is “murder” therefore government sanctioned murder is a supported. Using term “terrorist” creates confusion in midst of 2d Am and drone memes.

Yesterday, L.A. Sheriff’s office fired seven members from its repudiated Jump Out Boys Group with history of abuse. Gang unit “abuses” included initiating gang wars after gang truces. Is this an olive branch to Dorner?

Hopefully, I’m not wandering too far off-topic … LA Sheriff’s office move triggered memories why those gang units were formed in the first place. These units were created after a “government sanctioned” CIA program “targeted” minority neighborhoods to raise money by dumping drugs and automatic weapons. I find direct correlation in terms targeted and government action when addressing drones and the contra program and I find that the “collateral” (I hate that word) damage from the contra program to be far more devastating.

    – – —Nelson Mandela’s granddaughters talk new reality show ‘Being Mandela’– —

    – – — –Being Mandela stars Nelson and Winnie Mandela’s granddaughters Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway and Swati Dlamini. The series will give viewers a window into the daily lives of their close-knit family, and showcase some of their conflicts and personal aspirations.
“We realized this would be a great showcase for our country. We didn’t only just produce Nelson Mandela,” Swati said during an interview with theGrio.

As sisters, daughters, granddaughters, mothers and businesswomen, their personal and professional lives are on full display throughout the 13-episode season.

Zaziwe and Swati didn’t ask permission from their legendary grandfather to do their reality show, however they believe their show will make him proud.

“No we didn’t have to ask him. I mean our grandfather is 95. So we don’t actually go an ask him things like this,” Zaziwe said. “But the Mandela name is our name as well. So he entrusts us to do well by the name to respect the name to treat it with integrity and to produce something that he can be proud of. So we just know that he supports us in everything that we do and we take pride in our name, so we would never do anything to tarnish the name in any way.”

Highlights include their first ever visit to Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. While there, the sisters see the jail cell where their grandfather lived, and also toured the limestone quarry where he worked.

I’ve been meaning to share this with you fam but have been swamped with work.

Regarding the National Prayer Service on Thursday and the guest speaker Dr. Ben Carson.

I always suspected Dr. Carson had a chip on his shoulder and in spite of his professional accomplishments, an inferiority complex he never seemed to quite shake.

I remember watching him as guest speaker at one of the large right wing evangelical Christian “congregations” about a year or so ago.

They’d trotted him out as yet another cover for their racism and “proof” that they didn’t “hate” all black men – just the awful, awful one in the White House.

And boy, did Ben Carson play to his audience! Tearing into President Obama and denouncing the Affordable Care Act. The large all white congregation lapped it up of course. As he shamelessly sucked up to them.

So I was not shocked in the least to see him at the National Prayer Breakfast exhibiting his petty, small, know-it-all, notice-me-I’m-so-smart-and-can-match-that other black guy on the dais, spiel.

When a guy starts his speech by trying to convince the audience of his importance and detailing how many speeches he gives and how often, you know he’s pretty pathetic.

There was a certain gossipy, mean-spirited, small-minded quality to his speech, style and the general manner of the man himself. The more he spoke, the smaller he got. I was so embarrassed for him, but he seemed to lack the ability to feel any of it himself.

And he’s “just saying” retorts that punctuated his every attempted dig at the president – seriously, ugh!

There was no humility. None whatsoever. And nothing smart or impressive overall about the man particularly after he articulated his very selfish, greedy, unsympathetic, right wing talking points that dripped of contempt for the poor and revealed the absence of a heart and a blatant lack of empathy in a man who but for the grace of God, might have been one of that poor today.

This at a “prayer” breakfast no less.

No charity, no grace. His details of his “good works” was more an advertisement for himself and clearly not from that good and unselfish place.

A man who didn’t seem to posit in word or deed, the very lucky hand God had dealt him at several points in life. Yes he talked about his early troubles but it didn’t come across in the context of the very tangible miracle of how God and only God, turned things around by His grace.

Actually, if you listened carefully, you’d get a sense that this was a man who did not truly understand the magnitude of the gift and blessings bestowed upon him, outside of the accolades and pomposity that accompanied his achievements.

Maybe once upon a time he did. But not today. Not the guy who spoke at that prayer breakfast. He seemed to think it was all because of his significant brilliance which was earlier untapped.

And wasn’t it just so ironic that President Obama’s speech centered around humility.

What a shallow, sad, petty, undignified man Ben Carson is. And little wonder that he is the toast of the hate-filled right wing of this country.

He serves their purpose so well and does it too in the black face they desperately seek for cover.

Hope he enjoys the fanfare while it lasts. He strikes a very eery parallel to Alan Keyes. They both have more than one or two things in common.

    • goldenstar

Was he always like this or is this a shift? I am shocked that he’s like this.
