Friday Evening Thread: Meet America’s Oldest Veteran – Richard Overton!

My what a handsome soldier!

Via The Grio:

Richard Overton was honored with a standing ovation and a box of cigars Thursday for being America’s oldest veteran.

The Texas native served in World War II and said the key to living longer is “staying out of trouble.”

The 107-year-old told Fox News earlier this year that he doesn’t take any medicine and smokes up to 12 cigars a day.

“I also stay busy around the yards, I trim trees, help with the horses,” Overton said to Fox News. “The driveways get dirty, so I clean them. I do something to keep myself moving. I don’t watch television.”

“At my age and my strength, I’m able to stand up and do anything,” he said. “My mind is good, so I’m able to do what I want.”

  • Alma98

Dang Mr.Overton looks good for a 107, congrats sir.

    • qosine

I know! Thank you for your service to our country, sir.
So if we smoke 12 cigars a day and quit TV, we’ll live
      to be 107?

      • Alma98

I think not looking at the news alone will add 5yrs lol.

        • nathkatun7

I know my boycotting of TV news, since 2010, has been beneficial to my health.

          • Aquagranny911

            Live Long & Prosper!

          • nathkatun7

Thanks Aquagranny! I should have added that I have not had any overwhelming impulse to destroy my T.V.b whenever the talking heads come on.

          • Alma98

            Me too lol.

      • Aquagranny911

I could easily quit TV but I will pass on smoking 12 cigars!

    • Aquagranny911

      Agree on both!

    • rikyrah

Thank you for your service sir..
      And, male or female..
      Black don’t crack!

    • AxelFoley

Yeah, when I read he’s 107, I was like, “Damn, he looks like he’s in his 70s”.

    • Tafr

Mr. Overton was rocking that uniform.

    Hey all.
Got back from a leisurely day beginning this Holiday weekend.
    Went to see Thor…LOVE IT!
And this is from someone who was ‘ eh’ about the first one.
The actor playing Thor has really gotten into the role.
The special effects were great..I didn’t see it in 3-D, but I guess those who did had a great show.
Lamh’s baby Idris was there once again.
As always with a Marvel Comics movie…stay until after the credits have finished.

Idris and I are taking a break. I found out he’s been cheating in our imaginary marriage.

evening peeps. greetings from DFW. Day 2 of my vacation, and I spent majority of the time at my former job having lunch and talking to my former coworkers and supervisors.

it always nice getting reacquainted with people who you genuinely like and who genuinely like you. it’s weird, but getting back and talking to them really brought home to me how even though Hurricane Katrina took a lot away from me, my family and my city…it also forced me to get out of the comfort zone of NOLA. I met a lot of good people in DFW after Katrina and they are still good people. My time in DFW was made decideldly easier thanks to having them in my life.

For someone like me to come from a place where I was surrounded by family at every turn to DFW where I basically only had limited family, these people made me miss my family less, and seeing them on this vacation just brought home how much knowing them all made my life in DFW away from my family just that more easier to bear.

Anyway, 2 more days to go. I’m getting together with my good friends from college and we are going to see Thor and then drinks I think. Sunday get to see my lil sis at her dorm for probably the last time, she should be graduating next time I see her.

All in all, 1/2 vacation has been pretty good!

    Have a great weekend guys!

For Help on Iran, Netanyahu Must Look to West Bank
By Jeffrey Goldberg Nov 7, 2013 4:12 PM CT

So why are the prime minister’s complaints being ignored? Two reasons. The first reason is that U.S. President Barack Obama has him boxed in. Netanyahu can’t launch a unilateral strike on Iran now that the U.S. is actively negotiating with its leaders. That would just be outre. So Netanyahu is in a time-out of sorts — and therefore semi-marginalized.

The second reason is one Netanyahu, so far at least, has refused to comprehend. His unwillingness to permanently freeze settlement growth on the West Bank, to make the sort of grand gesture toward the Palestinians that would advance the peace process, has caused even those in Washington and Europe who are sympathetic to his stance on Iran to write him off as generally immovable and irrational.

    POU FAM♥- – ADDITIONAL INFO: –

    — -Tony Dungy didn’t draft Incognito because of his ‘reputation’ – - -

    - – –Former NFL head coach and current football analyst Tony Dungy said he passed on the opportunity to draft Richie Incognito back in 2005 because of his “reputation.”

“We just didn’t want to bring [Incognito] into our locker room,” Dungy toldTODAY anchor Savannah Guthrie Friday morning. “That’s not to say he’s the guilty party in this. I don’t know everything that happened there, but I do know the reputation that Richie Incognito had and it wasn’t what we wanted in our locker room.”

Dungy was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 2005 when
Incognito was available. He was eventually selected in the third round by the St. Louis Rams.

This week, the Miami Dolphins suspended the offensive lineman indefinitely on the heels of an investigation of alleged abuse of teammate Jonathan Martin. Incognito told WSVN-TV in Fort Lauderdale that the “storm” surrounding his allegations “will pass.”

Dungy said the issues in the Dolphins locker room are not exclusively an NFL problem. But ultimately, it all boils down to respect.

“You have to have respect for your fellow players,” Dungy said.
“It has to start in the management. It has to start with the coaches and the general manager creating an atmosphere and a safe environment.
And then the players have to carry it on from there.”

  • jds09

The conversation between bell hooks and MHP that’s floating around on twitter is pretty good.

    • crazycanuck

      What is the conversation about?

      • jds09

        Black feminism.

        • crazycanuck

hmmm, I’ll have to check that out

  • jziglar

I swear someone is stalking me on the internet and down voting any comments I make. First it was political wire, then it happened on the previous thread, and now I got a down vote on the peoples view for no reason.

LOL ! maybe I’m being a little paranoid. It’s no big deal but it just seems weird.

    • Aquagranny911

Not at all paranoid. I noticed it happen to GN after she posted on some sites where I visit. It has happened to me a few times. Spandan does get trollers which he zaps when they post but they still come in & down rate some comments.

It’s kind of like picking up fleas that soon die without a host. Just ignore it. Actually you should take it as a compliment. You must have pissed them off. Good on you!

      • jziglar

Yeah, I guess I offended someone. It’s kind of sad that some people do such childish things but that’s life.

    • crazycanuck

Ok, I must confess, that down vote was me, I couldn’t help myself. Playing with your mind

      • jziglar

        LOL ! That was good.

        • Aquagranny911

Jziglar, do you want me to hurt her just a little? I know her fears.

          • crazycanuck

Oh boy, I’m in trouble now

          • jziglar

Lol ! No it’s all good. It was a nice little prank.

      • Aquagranny911

Mean! I thought Canadians were nice people. You have been watching too much Scandal & Coven.

      • nathkatun7

        Is this for real?

        • Aquagranny911

Hola Nath! CC was the one giving the down rate here at POU for a joke. It’s OK, she didn’t do it over at TPV. The TPV down rate was probably a troll. Read down thread a bit more & you will see that CC was just joking.

We like to joke & tease each other sometimes here. How’s by your casa? Doing OK? I see your posts a lot but usually after you are gone.

          • nathkatun7

Hola Aqua! I just found that out. I am always late to the meeting (and no it has nothing to do with CP time) because I work weird hours. I am also a night owl as I usually comment after midnight. My Casa is dong OK. except for my sister who fell and broke her hip and has been confined for over a year now. I hope everyone in your Casa is doing well.

Sorry I miss you a lot though I always read, and greatly appreciate, your commentaries. I usually don’t comment much here because of all the brilliant people at POU, who say everything I feel and believe much better than I can. So, whenever I read all the brilliant and spot-on commentaries, all I usually do is just nod my head and mumble to myself:”That’s Right!”I especially always come here to read the front page posts that are so educational. I
brag all the time about POU to my family.

          • TyrenM

I’m down with night owls. Signed, can’t get to sleep before1:30am on work nights.

          • BarbinAtlSouth

I understand that – but I have to break that habit before I start a job. I can’t go to sleep at night – but I can’t get up in the morning if I don’t get a good night’s sleep.

I don’t wanna come back on here cryin’ about being out of work cuz I got fired for being late everyday!

          • nathkatun7

We need to hang out together!

      • Aquagranny911

CC, I should not be laughing but you are in big trouble now because Nathkatun7 is probably planning to have your Canadian bacon for breakfast!

I think I will enjoy this!

    • nathkatun7

No you are not paranoid JZiglar. I saw the down vote to your response to my comment at TPV and wondered why you were down voted for agreeing with me but I wasn’t. Now I see that you’ve been down voted again here. I figured you must have been telling the truth about someone and they are pissed off. On the other hand, the person down voting you must be a coward. Otherwise, he/she would have the guts to at least openly challenge your commentaries.

  • Aquagranny911

I’m sure POU has been on this & I missed it but that Lara Logan biscuit is a South African racist. No wonder she is all over trying to hurt PBO. I just found this out & looked her up. She has big time issues.

    • Alma98

Thanks for the info AG I did not know this.

      • Aquagranny911

Me neither but now her behavior makes sense & she has had other incidents in her career that make you go Hmmm. Look at her time line & the schools she attended. She’s from Durban where my SIL’s Auntie godmother works so I know a little about that area.

        • Alma98

I hope after this latest fiasco I hope people put on ignore.

    • jziglar

Yeah I read some of the comments she has made over the past few years. She was very critical of the Obama administration’s foreign policy in Afghanistan. The woman sounds like a republican with ODS.

    • TresL

I didn’t know that about her but I’ve always found it interesting that all of the well-known white South Africans who either now live or work here were somehow all against Apartheid. The only one I sort of believe is Dave Matthews. The rest, who knows? It seems to me the politically correct thing to say when you’re trying to make your way in the U.S.

    • qosine

Given this info, Lara Logan’s behavior makes
total sense. She needs to hook up with that ‘
woman doing a project on black guys in Philly
      and catwhistles.

    • nathkatun7

Thanks Aquagranny! I was over at TOD trying to find out who this woman is.

    • conlakappa

I bought her deal was that she was the daughter of an Irishman who moved there for some reason. When she first came on the scene in the US, her accent was all over the place. She is a shape shifter.

      • Aquagranny911

Check her out a little more carefully & check out her schools. I wonder if she changed her name a bit. Regardless she is a piece of malignant work.

  • qosine

I’ve been playing Google’s Rorschach test.
So far, I’ve seen bats, elves, the devil, a monster, and
big hedges. What does the say about me? lol

    • Aquagranny911

Speaking as a former mental health counselor, it means you have been spending way too much time on politics!

      • qosine

        LOL! LOL! Guilty

    • crazycanuck

Oh good I saw the big hedges too, and I thought I should be seeing something else lol, I saw a bear, elves, oh I also saw dinosaurs on a ball or something

      • qosine

        Alright! I am not ALONE!

      • Aquagranny911

The bear & hedges just mean you are Canadian but I’m not sure about that elves thing. Maybe you should go get checked out.

        • crazycanuck

LOL, ok who is being mean now

          • Aquagranny911

Mean? I’m just looking out for your mental well being. It’s only Nov 8, you should not be seeing elves quite yet.

But stores are already gearing up for Valentine’s Day so who knows. It could be them & not you. You just need to stay on top of that.

    • vulcan_girl

I saw some eyes looking at me, a couple of giants leaning towards each other, some dinosaurs on balls, and ladies drinking tea.

BREAKING: Oversight Dems releasing new evidence they say shows Issa is selectively leaking Obamacare documents.

    10:30 AM – 8 Nov 2013

    • Alma98

uh huh, get his trifling ass, it’s time for him to brought up on ethic charges.

      • nathkatun7

Look, Issa is a very wealthy man, perhaps the richest man in Congress, but he also happens to be a class A crook! This should be pointed out every time he resorts to his crookish ways.

        • Alma98

Plouffe always points it out lol.

          • nathkatun7

Plouffe is my man! He does not take shit when it comes to defending President Obama.

I am however, very serious when I say that Darrell Issa is the biggest crook sitting in Congress! He tried to buy the California governorship and failed because people found out who he really is. He represents one of the most right wing Congressional districts in CA. His days in Congress are, however, numbered. Demographic changes in California are slowly catching up with him. His margin of victory in 2012 was much lower than before. I actually think he can be defeated if Democrats chose to actively support his Democratic opponent.

          • Alma98

I know he’s a big time crook with money to burn.
But as we saw with the Koch brothers having a lot of money doesn’t always work. Hopefully like you said his days are numbered.

          • nathkatun7

I really think if Democrats targeted his district he can be taken out. When I came to San Diego in the 70′s, Republicans controlled 4 out of 5 Congressional districts in this very populous San Diego County. Since the 90s, the ratio has been 3 Republicans to 2 Democrats. After so many tries Democrats, in the 2012 election, finally won a district that had traditionally been held by Republicans. Also, In 2012, Darrell Issa’s margin of victory was greatly reduced by a poorly funded candidate. That’s is why I am convinced that he can be taken out. Obviously It won’t be easy, but it’s not impossible. Also, announcing to mount a spirited campaign against him might make him spend more time defending his seat instead of spending time manufacturing scandals to use against the president.

Richie Incognito . . . The Uncivilized Barbarian.

I’m shocked, shocked I say to discover the barbarians aren’t civilized. Conan lives . . . and apparently works in the NFL, granted he’s traveling . . . incognito.

    Sorry, I couldn’t help it.

While you’re at it, forgive me, I hate to be the bearer-of bad news, the teller-of the traumatic truth, but every locker-room in the NFL has some level, some form, some degree of the same boorish behavior going on within their pigskin fraternity as the Miami Dolphins do.

Incognito isn’t alone in his terrorist acts, and he’s not the first . . . nor the last.

ESPN has Incognito on tape last year elaborating on why he and Dolphin teammate Mike Pouncy were “coercing” then-rookie Ryan Tannehill. Jonathan Martin was pushed n’ shoved by more than just one man – and more specifically – by a culture which turned a blind-eye, a deaf-ear and cold-shoulder to how workplace biz-ness was conducted, how lockerroom law n’ order was maintained. How the herd of stallions, Mustangs and war ponies is thinned.

This whole system needs to be broken wide open.

What’s been annoying the most is to see former Black players, who are now commentators on the NFL channel, try to excuse this racist bully behavior.

    POU FAM♥ – - -Good ECONOMIC INDICATOR NEWS: :>) –

    — -U.S. Stocks Soar on Robust Jobs Report

    — -Markets jumped on Friday as October’s upbeat jobs report bolstered the view that the U.S. economy can expand with benefits to its workforce even if the Federal Reserve opts to reduce the size of its stimulus program.

The U.S. added 204,000 jobs in October with the unemployment rate rising to 7.3% from 7.2% in the previous month, the Labor Department said Friday. Economists were expecting 120,000 jobs, with the 7.3% jobless rate meeting predictions.
In a week in which stocks were poised to decline, the jobs report sent the S&P 500 higher by 1.3% to 1,770.54, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 1.1% to 15,761.27. The Nasdaq jumped 1.6% to 3,919.23. For the week, the S&P and Dow rose 0.51% and 0.94%, respectively. The Nasdaq lost 0.07% for the five-day trading period.

“It’s a big upside surprise, and of course raises the question,
what does the Federal Reserve going to do with stronger economic data in terms of their monetary policy,” Ben Garber, an economist at Moody’s Analytics said in an interview.

Pryor Warned In Right-Wing Ad Not To Let Obama Fill Key Judicial Vacancies (VID)
    SAHIL KAPUR – NOVEMBER 8, 2013, 4:36 PM

A conservative group is attacking Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR), who is up for re-election in 2014, with a TV ad buy demanding he refuse to let President Barack Obama fill three judicial vacancies on the powerful D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Judicial Crisis Network, a right-wing activist organization focused on the courts, has taken out what it claims is a six-figure ad buy airing the spot below for two weeks on Little Rock television, a spokesman for the group said.

“Pryor is helping Obama pack a key court with new liberal judges, who will review the EPA, the IRS, and agencies Obama is using to push his unconstitutional job-killing agenda,” says a narrator in the ad. “When Mark Pryor rubber stamps Obama’s liberal judges, it hurts Arkansas.”

Pryor campaign spokesman Erik Dorey responded swiftly in an email to TPM, “Another day, another false attack from Tom Cotton’s Washington special interest pals trying to smear Mark Pryor because he looks after Arkansans.”

Lindsey Graham Silent About Discredited ’60 Minutes’ Benghazi Report That He Hyped

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) trumpeted the recent “60 Minutes” piece on last year’s attack in Benghazi perhaps louder than any other Republican, but he’s been mostly silent since CBS News retracted the report on Friday.

After TPM submitted multiple requests for comment, a spokesman for Graham finally responded with an email saying that the senator “will be a guest on CNN State of the Union discussing the latest on Benghazi and the Iranian nuclear program” this Sunday.

Graham has drawn heavy attention to the “60 Minutes” report since it first aired on Oct. 27.

He told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer last week that the report filed by CBS News correspondent Lara Logan proved that “the story told by the administration about what happened in Benghazi doesn’t have an ounce of truth in it.”

    CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager:

Fager said “60 Minutes” can no longer be sure “if there was anything true” that Davies told them.

“We don’t believe there is,” Fager said. “

Fager declined to address a question about whether anyone would be suspended or fired.

In 2004, CBS News fired three producers after failing to authenticate documents that veteran journalist Dan Rather used in a “60 Minutes Wednesday” report on then-President George W. Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard. In the aftermath of “Memogate,” Rather lost his program and left the network in 2006.

The beltway media has been desperately looking for a scandal…karma has delivered one.

    • TresL

I really wish a real journalist would do a lengthy piece on how all this crappy journalism in the age of Obama is directly linked to the hatred of PBO by the people who cover him. It has clouded their journalistic integrity, for those who ever had any, and has led others to knowingly report lies because the corrections will never get as much play as the original story. They want to be that reporter who brings down the first black president but they’re bringing down American journalism instead.

If the truth shows the president in a positive light, they are accused of being an Obot so by that theory every story has to be negative which is ridiculous and obviously not real journalism. They are supposed to report facts which should have no bearing on whether or not you like the President. But instead, they’re running around chasing these right wing conspiracies to prove to the RWNJs that they are not favoring PBO in their reporting.

They’re all going to be certifiable by the end of his presidency.

      • nathkatun7

“I really wish a real journalist would do a lengthy piece on how all this crappy journalism in the age of Obama is directly linked to the hatred of PBO by the people who cover him.”

TresL, are there any real journalists left in the so called mainstream media? It seems to me that the so called journalists fall into two categories: the GOP propagandists like Chuck Todd, Jon Karl, Ed Henry and others, and the emoprogs like Ezra Klein, Chris Hayes, David Sirota, etc., etc.

We need an outsider, preferably a skilled academic to objectively do.

        • TresL

I agree. I should have been more clear because I know we’d never get that kind of an expose from the beltway types. I was thinking of someone like Michael Tomasky or David Corn or anyone who’s interested in the truth and not afraid of being called an Obot or being ostracized by his/her fellow journalists.

          • nathkatun7

I think the two people you suggested might do the job. Both of them have not been shy criticizing President Obama now and then (unfairly in my opinion), but they also have written pieces that objectively give him credit for his accomplishments. So, it may be hard to accuse them of bias.

        • qosine

Man sues wife after she gives him ‘ugly’ baby
    By David K. Li

A court in northern China has sided with an angry ex-husband, who sued his estranged wife for marrying him without disclosing her previous plastic surgeries. Fuming hubby Feng Jian only found out about her wife’s scalpel-aided touch-ups after she gave birth to their baby daughter who was “ugly beyond description,” according to court papers cited by the Sina News.

Feng initially suspected his wife of having an affair. But after DNA tests proved he was the ugly duckling’s biological dad, she fessed up to having done $100,000 worth of cosmetic surgeries before they met. A court ordered her to pay him $120,000 for his claims of marriage under false pretenses.

    — – -Insurers told to treat mental illness equally- –

    – – - -Tens of millions of mentally ill and drug-addicted Americans will get expanded access to treatment under regulations unveiled Friday that require insurers to provide equal coverage for behavioral and medical health problems. [WATCH VIDEO]

The rule amounts to a formal government finding that treatment for mental illness and substance abuse is as important to a person’s health as medical or surgical care.

It also reflects action on the last of 23 executive measures announced in January as part of the administration’s effort to stem gun violence in the wake of last year’s elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

The regulations issued Friday stem from the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act. The administration issued interim regulations in 2010, though critics pressed for a permanent rule to cement insurance parity for people suffering from substance abuse and mental problems.

“This is the largest expansion of behavioral health coverage in a
generation,” Health and Human Services HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius declared during a speech Friday morning in Atlanta.

The outraged family of a stepfather Tasered as he tried to save his stepson from a house fire is considering suing the town of Louisiana, Mo.

Officers used the stun gun on Ryan Miller after he kicked in a front door and tried to enter the burning residence to rescue 3-year-old Riley, Quincy Newsreports.

The city administrator says officers tried to restrain Miller after he became combative, while a relative says Miller was Tasered three times — including twice after he had been handcuffed. After he was pulled back, a firefighter tried to enter the home but was forced back by the heat, the AP reports.

Riley was killed in the blaze.

    — -Luke Cage and other superheroes to receive Netflix shows—:>)

    - — – Television series like Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards have made the web-streaming service Netflix a viable alternative to traditional TV programming.

Netflix subscribers proudly binge on their favorite shows in one
sitting and the company embraces that mentality, which has only made their brand more successful.

In a partnership between Disney and Marvel, look for more Netflix series of the superhero variety.

Following in the footsteps of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,
Netflix will have four new live-action shows revolving around superheroes Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist that will premiere in 2015.

For those who are unfamiliar with Marvel comics, the four heroes were all Avengers at one point — so potential crossovers with Iron Man, Thor and The Hulk are possible.

Because sometimes I’m masochistic, I recorded The Ed Show (mainly because MED was guest hosting) and am watching it now. They did a segment on the latest Halperin/Heileman book – Double Down.

“Obama had little patience for the ‘professional left’ and vinishly close to zero for what one of his senior african american aides, michael strauthmanis, referred to as ‘professional blacks’ (as opposed to black professionals).

“Apart from Georgia congressman John Lewis and Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, Obama had nearly as much contempt for the CBC as he did for hte tea party caucus.

“New York’s Charlie Rangel, he derided as a hack; Jesse Jackson, Sr. was effectively banned from the white house. Obama remembered all too well a conversation with (Cornel) West in 2009, in which the professor used the precious time to complain about his seating at the inauguration.”

Guests were James Peterson & Karen Finney. Hilarity ensued.

    Not.

Finney didn’t want the family converstation out here with unnamed sources and Peterson didn’t wasn’t interested in gossip but wanted a discussion on policies that are problematic.

I prettied it up some. Kind of an annoying segment. They defended Rangel, went in on PBO speeches that JP still thinks was lecturing…
I don’t know, maybe I’m expecting too much thinking that the president would get support considering the constant obstruction he faces.

    • Aquagranny911

Hola BarbinAtlSouth! I really believe that PBO had ” little patience for the professional left” & even less for the grifters, no matter their race, creed or color…just saying….

Now this total BS will be the next soup de jour for our media & the trolls. However, they might be surprised that most of the American people don’t give a flying roasted fig about that!

      • BarbinAtlSouth

Yup, they (the nefarious “they”) are always cooking up new shit to throw at the president.

And I agree with you, he is truly Team NFTG. And considering far too many of his allies are twisting their mouths to say something stupid on tv or twitter, what they think matters little.

    • qosine

Hard to tell what PBO did or didn’t say or what was or wasn’t filtered through his aids/staff, but given his hiring choices:
      1. Eric Holder as AG for DOJ
      2. Jeh Johnson for DHS
      3. Susan Rice as his national security advisor
      4. Todd Jones for his ATF director, and
      5. Anthony Foxx as U.S. Transportation Secretary
I’d say he sets a high bar and clearly wants black professionals in critical positions.

He expects to run a top notch operation, and so he only hires the best. They make the media look like the half-ass tabloid operation it has CHOSEN to become.

      • BarbinAtlSouth

Absolutely! I completely agree with you regarding his nominations.

Whether the president said it or not, *I* think he has legitimate gripes with the CBC and the professional left. But as for Double Down, the book? Circle jerk – and I just don’t want to be around anything so messy. I read Game Change and can’t honestly say that I’m a better person for having read it.

        • qosine

You read it so I don’t have to:)

          • qosine

Who wrote that? I think, maybe, books like
This Town and Double Down have some
            good insight w/ some good inside dish;
probably they would make better mag

I took my son to see 12 Years A Slave Sunday. It was really, really, well done. I’m glad I went. My son (13 yo) just got angry. But we talked about it – he hasn’t wanted to talk about it again because it just makes him mad all over again.

There were moments when I shuddered thinking of being a free person, living my life, and then being kidnapped and forced into slavery and it was a horrible feeling. I think there were spaces in the movie where you can’t help but feel it.

I can’t describe it correctly. But I’m glad I saw it. I need to find more of Steve McQueen’s work.

Anger tells you that you are not only alive but also responding to severe injustice the way you should. It’s important to validate the feelings, the grief & anger are real.
