Friday Evening Thread: Song Of The Day

Dedicated to the ever delusional GOP – especially Romney, McCain and Rove.

    Oh so this is why McCain losing his mind? Cuz he knows he’s about to go the way of the dodo bird?

    John McCain’s Benghazi Committee Plan Would Give Senator New Relevance

    WASHINGTON — Just four years ago, John McCain was the leader of the GOP. Today, he’s the highest-ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, a perch from which the former fighter pilot is deeply engaged in the national conversation over war, terrorism and intelligence gathering.

    But in January, the Arizona senator will lose his top-ranking committee seat due to term limits. The only ranking Republican spot available to him next session will be on the Indian Affairs Committee.

    Unless, that is, the Senate creates a brand-new select committee. On Wednesday, McCain, flanked by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), proposed just that: a select committee with extensive authority to investigate the Benghazi, Libya, attack and the U.S. government’s response.

      He is going to be Teabaggered out/need to retire the next go-round any way. I said it this week–Graham’s State party basically outed him (the half-toe that is still in the closet) in 2010. With Lieberman now gone, that triumvirate of whining and bitter will no longer be around.

    Maybe Obamacare isn’t driving the doctor shortage

    It’s well-known in the health-care world that we have a looming doctor shortage, with a growing gap between the medical services we need and the doctors who can provide them. This often gets chalked up to the Affordable Care Act: Expanding insurance, the thinking goes, will hugely increase demand for doctors’ services.[....]

    New research in the Annals of Family Medicine throws some cold water on that theory: Researchers there suggest that it’s population growth and aging largely driving the demand for doctors, with the Affordable Care Act playing a more minor role. [....]

    They estimate that the United States will need 52,000 additional primary care doctors by 2025. Of those, about 33,000 are due to population growth and 10,000 would be needed to meet the needs of the aging. Then, there would be 8,000 doctors demanded by the insurance expansion.[....]

    Occupy Wall Street’s ‘Rolling Jubilee’ Raises Enough To Abolish $5 Million In Debt

    Members of Occupy Wall Street last week announced the formation of “Rolling Jubilee,” a fundraising campaign that would be used to purchase outstanding debt and then abolish it. And as of Friday, the campaign has already raised enough to eliminate more than $5.7 million in personal debt, according to its web site. The group’s plans are to buy outstanding debt from financial institutions for a small price, but instead of collecting on the debt, it will forgive it in order to relieve student loan, medical, and other forms of debt.

    Chicago’s urban farm district could be the biggest in the nation

    Chicago’s Black Belt area, on the historic South Side, was once a hub for jazz, blues, and literature, but today is riddled with vacant lots, poverty, and blight. Now, a new plan envisions the area as a thriving urban farm district.

    In the coming weeks, the city’s planning department is expected to approve the creation of a green belt with a strong focus on urban agriculture within the neighborhood of Englewood. The plan is an element of Chicago’s Department of Housing and Economic Development’s (DHE) Green Healthy Neighborhoods initiative, designed to shepherd and foster redevelopment in 13 square miles of the South Side.[....]

    Large Employers Attempt To Lower Health Costs At The Expense Of Their Workers

    According to CNN Money, the cost of employer-sponsored health insurance plans rose by just 4.1 percent this year, representing the lowest increase in employer health expenditures in 15 years. Premiums have continued their upward trend since the Bush Administration, but their rate of increase has seen a decline under President Obama, while government programs such as Medicare Advantage have actually seen a net reduction in premium costs.

    Although the latest figures on employer-sponsored health insurance premiums are encouraging, they are largely a result of employers simply shifting health care costs onto their employees by increasing workers’ contributions to health coverage and offering expensive, risky “high-deductible health plans.” Employers have been engaging in a misleading blame-game, citing Obamacare as an excuse for their shoddy cost-shifting practices when they are actually just trying to squeeze out extra profits[....]

    Reid tells McCain to drink some prune juice and let that Benghazi isht go.

    Reid to McCain: No need for special Libya panel
    By DONNA CASSATA
    Associated Press / November 16, 2012

    WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic leader in the Senate is rejecting Sen. John McCain’s request for a Watergate-style congressional committee to investigate the deadly Sept. 11 raid in Libya.

    In a letter Friday to McCain, Sen. Harry Reid said he refuses to allow the Senate to be used as a ‘‘venue for baseless partisan attacks.’’ Reid said several committees in the House and Senate are already investigating the attack that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

    Fox Covers Up Acknowledgement That Petraeus Was OK With Benghazi Talking Points

    JEREMY HOLDEN

    [...] In an interview immediately after that hearing explaining what Petraeus said, King said that the CIA initially wrote in its assessment that attack was connected to an Al Qaeda-affiliated group, but that point was removed during a standard review by the broader intelligence community.

    King said that Petraeus testified that he was not upset that the reference to Al Qaeda was removed from the intelligence assessment before it was made public. In fact, King made clear that the CIA OK’d the assessment after the reference to Al Qaeda was removed:

    Yeah, they said, “OK for it to go.”

    But when Fox interviewed King, anchor Megyn Kelly made no reference to King’s earlier statement making clear that Petraeus was not upset that the reference to Al Qaeda was removed from the assessment before it was made public, or that the CIA OK’d the assessment Rice relied upon.

    [He was on the list for access to nuclear codes: Marc Ambinder]
    - –

    - – - - Marc Ambinder of the The Week reports on an intriguing and little-known factor that may have contributed to David Petraeus’ quick decision to resign: It seems Petraeus was on the list of people who would have access to the nation’s nuclear codes should the rest of Washington be wiped out in an attack. And the people on that list are held to ultra-high standards under something called the Personnel Reliability Program. “Adultery is not a minor sin under the PRP rules,” writes Ambinder.

    It’s all part of the nation’s secret Continuity of Government plans in the wake of a catastrophe. Petraeus’ “exalted” role in those plans might well have led national intelligence chief James Clapper to insist he step down as quickly as he did, writes Ambinder. Read the full post here.

    Appeals court finds Michigan affirmative action ban unconstitutional

    The U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals narrowly ruled on Thursday that Michigan’s ban on affirmative action, passed by a ballot initiative in 2006, is unconstitutional.[....]

    In the majority opinion, Judge R. Guy Cole Jr. writes that while a student has many paths to protect legacy admissions that give special preference to her family’s alumni connections under the state’s constitution, “Thesame cannot be said for a black student seeking the adoption of a constitutionally permissible race-conscious admissions policy. … The existence of such a comparative structural burden undermines the Equal Protection Clause’s guarantee that all citizens ought to have equal access to the tools of political change.”[....]

      Por Braugher. o good, and can’t buy a hit. But it is not just his shows. Programs get yanked after three airings now. They say there is only one solid “hit” from the current season; POI. Looks like I can delete both from the DVR sight unseen. I’ve been burned so much by the networks and their itchy trigger fingers that if I’m interested in a new show I’ll let all the episodes for the entire season pile up, and will watch them only if there will be a season 2. I’m so over getting invested in a show to have it yanked after a couple of weeks.

  • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

    So, basically, Dana Milbank thinks Ambassador Susan Rice is an ungrateful, uppity nigra who doesn’t know her place….(h/t Skeptical Brotha)

    Among those she has insulted is the woman she would replace at State. Rice was one of the first former Clinton administration officials to defect to Obama’s primary campaign against Hillary Clinton. Rice condemned Clinton’s Iraq and Iran positions, asking for an “explanation of how and why she got those critical judgments wrong.”

    Clinton got a measure of revenge in 2010 after she worked out a deal with the Russian foreign minister on a package of Iran sanctions to be adopted by the U.N. Security Council. The White House wanted Rice to make the announcement (part of a campaign to increase her profile that included high-visibility foreign trips and TV appearances), but a Clinton aide got Kerry to ask Clinton about the matter during an unrelated Senate hearing.

    Rice’s put-down of Clinton was tame compared with her portrayal of McCain during 2008, which no doubt contributes to McCain’s hostility toward her today. She mocked McCain’s trip to Iraq (“strolling around the market in a flak jacket”), called his policies “reckless” and said “his tendency is to shoot first and ask questions later. It’s dangerous.”

    Earlier this week, I think it was Sepia who posted the twitter link to an Ebony magazine interview in which Cornel West and Tavis Smiley repacked themselves as “loving” misunderstood “supporters” of the President. It’s irritating that at such an amazing moment in time in terms of civil rights victories and black unity on an unprecedented scale, Smiley and West continue to get opportunities in large venues to promote themselves and rewrite their history of hating on President Obama. So I ended up having an exchange with the Ebony twitter account. Caveat: they get points for engaging respectfully, but disappointingly, I don’t think that really they got it with respect to why West/Smiley are so objectionable to many of us. Here’s the exchange:

    @EBONYMag:
    [EXCLUSIVE] Tavis Smiley and Cornel West on their “loving” criticism of the president, how they plan to support him: http://www.ebony.com/news-views/interview-tavis-smiley-and-cornel-west-867

    @GN192:
    @EBONYMag Saying the President is a Republican in blackface is def. not “loving”–why give these 2 magazine space at such a wonderful time??

    @EBONYMag:
    @GN192 That is not a quote from our interview, perhaps you could read it and then offer feedback. Thanks!

    @GN192:
    @EBONYMag Understood, but that is a quote stated by Dr. West recently, which makes it difficult to see his attacks on the WH as loving.

    @EBONYMag:
    @GN192 What did you think of the interview?

    @GN192:
    @EBONYMag I thought the questions were okay, but I wish more attention was given to orgs like 1911United which promote unity & positivity.

    @EBONYMag:
    @GN192 The job of any publication reporting on the news is not to be “positive,” but to be balanced. Thanks so much for your feedback!

    @GN192:
    @EBONYMag I thought Ebony’s job pertained more to a positive agenda for black people and informing readers, not pushing West/Smiley’s agenda

    GN192:
    @EBONYMag I respectfully hope that in the future, more positive, constructive, & successful examples of blk political activism are featured.

    @EBONYMag:
    @GN192 If you read the site and magazine, you will see lots of that as well. Thanks so much!

    @GN192:
    @EBONYMag I didn’t see it in the Smiley/West article, as these two are on the absolute wrong site of history; thx for the debate.

    **************
    I didn’t like that “balanced” stuff. There are already too many publications which for “balance” promote haters of various superlative black people. No need for Ebony to go down that road IMO.

    • Kennymack1971

      Tavis and Cornel still have friends in Black media who will give them a platform for their self promoting BS. It doesn’t matter though because they have completely torn their draws with the majority of the Black community and there is no way they can erase that. They have revealed themselves as bitter jealous haters and Ebony can’t clean that up.

      • GN

        Indeed; Dr. West is so utterly transparent. He gave a “I’m a loving supporter of President Obama” stuff in one interview (which has a pro-POTUS readership), while calling President Obama a “Republican in blackface” in another interview (which has a fauxgressive audience). Seems like the only commonality here is self-promotion. I’d imagine that most of us are not buying this bs at all.

        • Kennymack1971

          It was a wrap when Tom Joyner finally told Tavis to go sit down somewhere. The majority of Black folks see Tavis and Cornel’s act for what it is: two dudes mad that a Black man became President and didn’t kiss their rings to do it.

          • Town

            Tom Joyner is trying to slide back into Tavis’ good graces. He didn’t want to leave Tavis’ side…Sybil & J. Anthony Brown & Huggie Lowdown think the opposite. Rest assured, if Barack Obama had lost last week, Tom would have been back up in Tavis’ grill.

          • qosine

            I just have to say, after reading this magnitudinous thread, that POU (the trustees’ weekly African Americans’ accomplishments series, Cheryl’s great website, and the great commenting crowd, does what “balanced news” no longer provides. There’s so much uplift, pride, fun, smartness here. Hope and change live here.

        • Miranda

          I had to say something back on twitter….John Johnson would have NEVER EVER EVER put some negative bullshit about the first black President who has been exceptional in every way in his magazine. Anyone who has read his words on why he started the magazine and what he hoped to accomplish would know that.

          • GN

            It’s a shame because if this is the new editorial direction, his wishes are not being honored.

          • Ebogan63

      • GN

        The articles about the First Couple returned Ebony to any sense of relevance and were guaranteed best sellers.

        Yes! If the editorial view is to now feature superlative black people and “balance that” by providing space to their haters, that’s a seriously flawed editorial choice.

        EXACTLY. I was taken aback.

      • annvic

        Ding! The truth that none of these people want to admit is that you cannot get a piece of that white corporate money if you are pro-black. As soon as you are acquired, the race is on to water down your blackness into something that poses no threat to the establishment and/or morph into something that is anti-uplift and degrades black people (*cough* BET *cough*). Ebony is just another example of a pro-black entity that gets swallowed up by corporate America and re-emerges a de-fanged, huddled mass of B.S. The first post-election issue and you focus not on the President, but two men who make their bread insulting him? Even though black America at large hates their guts? Hmm, yeah I’m sure there was no agenda there. John is spinning in his grave at the idea of a man who would call our first black president “A Republican in blackface” being ANYWHERE near an Ebony publication.

      You are a much better and more patient human being than I’ll ever be GN.

      Ebony magazine can’t hide it’s painful mediocrity behind this useless and now throroughly debunked and certainly exposed as completely bogus and worthless this shallow manipulation and public stabs in the back with proclamations of “balance” in “reporting”.

      They know exactly what they are doing by throwing shade on behalf of the now marginalized but formerly self-important, self-absorbed, green-eyed, self-appointed “black leaders” and “black high society” who always called the shots, led the way in their minds, constantly leveraged their perceived roles and earned the exclusive perks from white America and its top politicians in return for endorsing and supposedly rallying the black vote behind their guy, who are now seething and heart-heavy as they slip into complete irrelevance in the age of Barack and Michelle Obama.

      They never saw this 21st century man and wife coming and they’ve done everything to stop them.

      The people Ebony magazine are shilling on behalf of have tried everything to take down the Obamas—

      They have tried to maliciously malign, besmirch, attack, question, slander, cast aspersions on – in public and private – this great man and his amazing wife who just happen to be the first black President and First Lady of the United States.

      No, Ebony magazine isn’t looking to do “balance” all of a sudden— they wouldn’t know what that was if it hit them in the face seeing as they never did “balance” in their many years of existence.

      That was never the point for Ebony as a magazine. That is not what it was set up to do. It always highlighted, uplifted, supported and proudly celebrated the best and brightest of black America, not to tear down, but to inspire, give credit and celebrate especially where other traditional, mainstream media refused to.

      Suddenly that’s all changed now, and only because the Obamas represent to the purveyors of Ebony magazine, its benefactors and the folks that make up the Ebony magazine inner circle alike, the very same threat they pose to the Donald Trumps, Michael Bloomberg’s, Bob Woodards, Bill O’Reilly’s, Rush Limbaugh’s on the other side of the ODS color divide.

      How ironic that once upon a time, it would have been Ebony magazine front and center fighting for the Obamas against the massive envy, petty jealousies and mainstream attempts to deny them their rightful place in history.

      And how ironic that when Ebony magazine finally goes out of business for failing to do what it once did so well— highlight the positive and uplifting stories about black America instead of trying to cater to a very narrow and fleeting audience with a negative agenda that at once depresses and diminishes for the sole purpose of destroying the first black President—

      When Ebony finally dies that death, watch for them to blame it all on Barack Obama.

      One of the most telling stories from this time will be how much of formerly “important” black America, misbehaved and self-destructed from envy and the fear of irrelevance at the rise of a young, brilliant, intrinsically decent, great black man and his equally formidable black wife.

      • Worldwatcher7

        Not only should this be a comment of the week, it is the beginning of a rather brilliant book proposal.

        • GN

          Ditto on both counts.

      • edp4bho

        Bravo, Camille. Ebony was a comfortable fixture in many a black household throughout our childhood and onward. Now, I pick it up only when either Obama is on the cover or inside. I think I mentioned here last month that PBO’s enemies were included within last issue. I have noticed the minimal coverage over the years that its staff gives on any story- no longer the indepth exposes we thrived on, which always inspired. John Johnson would be very dismayed.

    – - -Democratic Congresswomen Come to Rice’s Defense – -

    - – –Susan Rice is receiving spirited defense in her battle to become Sec. of State. Rice, a career diplomat who is currently ambassador to the United Nations, is expected to be nominated by President Obama to replace outgoing Sec. of State Hillary Clinton. However Rice has run into a wall from Senate Republicans.

    An Associated Press article in the Grio said that Sen. Lindsay Graham and Sen. John McCain have been particularly vocal in their criticism. Earlier this week Graham and McCain criticized Rice’s comments over the U.S. embassy attack in Libya, calling her “untrustworthy” and “unqualified.” Republicans are upset that Rice said the attack was a result of a protest over an anti-Muslim film. They feel it was an act of terror. – - -[McAncient - -SAAAAAA-LAP!!]-

    “To batter this woman because they don’t feel they have the ability to batter President Obama is something we the women are not going to stand by and watch,” said Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis. “Their feckless and reckless speculation is unworthy of their offices as senators.”

    In response to questions of how she handled the Libya incident, Rice said she gave the best response she could at the time with the only information on hand.

    My last thought tonight just to blow ya’lls mind. I don’t understand the fanaticism over “Love Jones”. Maybe it’s because I didn’t see the movie until I was an adult woman, so no teenaged delusions about love. Maybe it’s because I rather stick a HIV-infested needle into my eyes and veins than sit through a slam poetry session (sorry Jessica). But the only thing I liked about “Love Jones” was that Lauryn Hill song, The Sweetest Thing. THAT IS ALL.

    • conlakappa

      Most of the people I know who love Love Jones saw it in their 20s. I don’t care for it either but no for the slam but for the marginal acting, contrived storylines, and people living in homes their careers wouldn’t seem to support. It is Friends with a sepia wash and poetry.

    – - -BREAKING: Judge Issues Injunction Over Contraception Mandate – –

    – — -A federal judge Friday night sided with a Christian publishing company in a lawsuit against the requirement included in Obamacare to provide co-pay free contraception to employees. US District Court Judge Reggie B. Walton issued a temporary stay on the rule. The company, Tyndale House Publishers, sued to be exempt from providing any contraception it equated with abortion, including Plan B and intrauterine devices (neither is actually an abortifacient). While this has become a pet issue of the religious right, in actuality, religious institutions are exempt from contributing to contraception cost. Instead, insurance companies must provide birth control free of charge to employees of such institutions — a requirement that a majority of Americans support.

    – -GOP Rep. Bilbray concedes his race – -

    - —Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.) has conceded to Democrat Scott Peters in one of the nation’s closest — and most expensive — House races.

    Bilbray had trailed Peters by just a few hundred votes on election night, but that gap has now expanded to more than 3,700 votes. The San Diego-based district was a top target by both parties and saw a total of $7.3 million in independent expenditures pour in, making it one of the most expensive House races in the country.

    Peters’s win means Democrats netted four seats in California, half their total gains in the House.

    – - -SNIP – -
    Bilbray’s concession leaves just four seats undecided. Reps. Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.) and Ron Barber (D-Ariz.) have narrow leads in their races, Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) is awaiting a court decision on whether he can force a recount in a race he trails in, and Reps. Charles Boustany Jr. (R-La.) and Jeff Landry (R-La.) will face off in an early December runoff election.

    “I am among those who believe that complete objectivity in journalism and public affairs is humanly impossible, but I reject the notion that public media should veer into advocacy,” Malatia wrote in the Nov. 9 op-ed, posted on Current, a public media trade publication. “Advocacy journalism elevates the voice of one citizen – that of the journalist,” Malatia said. – -[THIS!]-

    The letter went on to criticize Cornel and his new found approach to advocacy journalism; saying the show upset listeners from either side of the political balance.

      Weird, I was able to access it again, so maybe not.

    A pretty good response from someone to the sadistic idiot Milbank:

    Milbank: I don’t buy it. So, Rice is pugnacious? Good. She displeases the Putin tyrant? Good. She arouses hostility in Republican cowards like John McCain? Good. She is precisely who we need as SOS. Obama dealt a complete and humiliating defeat to the Republicans. They are in no position to dictate terms or cabinet appointments to Obama. Strike now, Mr. President. The Republican Tea Party is not your friend, with a proven track record of shrill disregard for America’s best interests.

    Milbank, go stick your head in the nearest toilet.

    This whole attack against Susan Rice has my blood boiling.
