Friday Evening Thread: TGIF!

What a week!

In case you missed it this week:

“And if Congress thinks that what I’ve done is inappropriate or wrong in some fashion, they’re free to make that case. But there’s not an action that I take that you don’t have some folks in Congress who say that I’m usurping my authority. Some of those folks think I usurp my authority by having the gall to win the presidency. And I don’t think that’s a secret. But ultimately, I’m not concerned about their opinions — very few of them, by the way, are lawyers, much less constitutional lawyers.” – President Obama in interview with the New York Times responding to GOP bitchassness about the healthcare law.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid did a STFU to the Senate:

Rev Al, Goldie Taylor and Erci Boehlert discuss the crazy racist right wing:

What was Black Twitter up to?

I am floored at the excess of the Univ of Oregon’s new facilities for their football team…this is insane. Watch the video and ask yourselves how in the hell they can have ALL THAT, while public school teachers in some states are going without PAY. dammit, they get lights that adjust to get their eyes accustomed for going outside!

    • Alma98

Like I said in the other thread Miranda they don’t give a damn about education. It’s all about who has the best this or that and how much money can a college get from sponsors. Something has got to change, corporations have taken over college sports and ruined them.

      • Miranda

This is effin crazy…..their lockers are air conditioned…the INDIVIDUAL LOCKERS….there are schools where the kids just suffer during the warm months! All they get is a fan that the teacher buys him or her self!

        • Alma98

It really is a sad state of affairs when money is spent so frivolous. Yet we have children who go to bed hungry. This country really is screwed up.

Notice @ggreenwald @aravosis @ltdanchoi &others who criticized PBO about gay rights have nothing 2 say or excuse Russia’s anti-gay laws? #p2

    PragmaticObotsUnite @PragObots 3h
I want to see Greenwald and the AmericaBlog people tell Putin to “evolve already”. Go ahead. I dare you! #p2

And John Aravosis threw a temper tantrum:

    John Aravosis @aravosis 1h
Are you 3 high or stupid? “Aravosis” hasn’t criticized Russia on gay rights? Ask @stoli about that. Heh. (@GN192 @problemwthat @PragObots)

    • Alma98

He sounds crazy panicked, I love how he gets off calling black folks racist. He’s a nasty piece of work.

      • gn

So mean-spirited. And he says he loves Greenwald’s work which makes all the sense in the world because GG is just as nasty and dishonest.

        • Alma98

Considering GG says he was proud to represent Matthew Hale tells me all I need to know about him.

Don’t forget that we’re also “racist” against Aravosis (told yall the far right is flipping the script and positing that they are the real victims of racism):

@aravosis @M_Shale @PragObots Right, so define which ones in those tweets said they hate you because you were white and gay?

@AnotherSlyfox @M_Shale @PragObots since we’re playing 20 question… Why did they pick 3 gay white men to try and smear with obvious lies? [Choi isn’t even white and the unmatched ferocity with which they attacked PBO is NO LIE]

He makes me sick; I really really really cannot with Aravosis.

      • PBomb

        Choi isn’t white.

Apparently, he suffers from reading comprehension or he is simply being obtuse.

Yet again, he need to look up the definition of “racist”. It does not mean what he think it means.

        • gn

He’s such a complete and utter jerk. He jumped onto his AmericaBlog account, tweeted the following, then blocked before I could answer:

@GN192 are you saying it’s impossible for a black person to hate all white people, or it’s acceptable? Either is rather sad.

Really and truly this dude has issues.

          • Alma98

Yep, you can tell him & GG are best buds, they sure love playing the victim.

          • gn

And are completely and utterly intellectually dishonest. Two peas in a pod.

    • Miranda

Hmmm….looking at his blog and I don’t see any criticism of Snowden picking that great bastion of freedom known as Russia as his new place of residence. Don’t see any calling out of Greenwald for basically poo-pooing Russia rolling out the “no homos” carpet to the whole wide world and not giving a damn.

      • gn

Analysis: McCain’s deals and ‘wacko-bird’ barbs are priceless for Obama

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican U.S. Senator John McCain
accidentally walked in on President Barack Obama this week when he was addressing a Democrats-only meeting of senators.

“Come on in, John,” Obama shouted.

A red-faced McCain turned around and headed out to chuckles and then applause from the Democrats. “My mistake,” McCain said.

To the far-right in the Republican Party, there is no mistake about it.
In a party that generally brooks no compromise with Obama, McCain is the compromiser-in-chief. He’s negotiating with the White House.

And he’s in-their-face about it, having recently described as “wacko
birds” two of the right’s most uncompromising heroes, Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul.

A recent article in the conservative National
Review described McCain as “Obama’s secret weapon” and a “lethal threat”to a Republican victory in the budget battles this fall.

Whatever the cause, severe injuries are increasing in the NFL lately. The number of injuries that forced a player to miss at least eight days jumped every year from 2009 to 2012, according to an analysis of NFL injury data released Wednesday. The study by Edgeworth Economics, based on information collected by the league, also shows that players with concussions missed an average of 16 days last season, up from only four days in 2005, while the length of time out for other types of injuries has been steadier.

“Severe injuries are increasing in frequency,” Jesse David, the economist overseeing the study, said in a telephone interview from Pasadena, Calif.

    – – — – –In a wide-ranging interview with the Daily Beast published on Friday, 83-year-old Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) railed against the Tea Party, likening members to whites in the South who fought to preserve segregation during the civil rights movement. He also hit Republicans, accusing the party of sabotaging American competitiveness.

There is little question that Rangel is nearing the end. First elected 43 years ago, after having defeated the man whose name adorns the building where the congressman keeps his office, he is musing
aloud now about what he once forbade anyone to discuss with him: his own retirement.

The Tea Party? Defeat them the same way segregation was beaten. “It is the same group we faced in the South with those white crackers and the dogs and the police. Southern Poverty Law Center files complaint about Florida’s race-based student achievement plans

Florida was hit with a complaint filed with the U.S. Department of
Justice on Friday accusing it of race-based education goals that violate civil rights law by setting “severely lower expectations” for black and Hispanic students. The Southern Poverty Law Center and Legal Aid Society of Florida’s Palm Beach County jointly filed the complaint on behalf of public school children.

[….] Under a plan drafted in October 2012 and due to take effect in the 2013-2014 school year, Florida set reading goals for public school students under which 90 percent of Asian-Americans were expected to read at grade level by 2018 compared with 88 percent of white students. At the same time, 81 percent of Hispanic students were to be reading at grade level by 2018 versus just 74 percent of black students.Similar disparities were predicted in the goals for math.[….]

TALLAHASSEE: Florida House speaker to hold hearings on stand-your-ground law – Miami-Dade – http://MiamiHerald.com http://hrld.us/18Stofm

    • Miranda

geez….take a gander at the person chairing the hearings:
“It’s a critical first step,” said Phillip Agnew, executive director of the Dream Defenders. “We’ve been here for three weeks. We know Democracy takes time. Progress takes time.”

They shouldn’t celebrate too hard. Weatherford assigned the task of chairing the hearings to a staunch supporter of the law, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach.

“I don’t support changing one damn comma of the stand your ground law,” Gaetz said Friday. “It would be reactionary and dangerous to make Floridians less safe to pacify uninformed protesters.”

Gaetz, the 31-year-old son of Senate President Don Gaetz, talks tough on crime. He passed a bill this year that expedited death row cases and has been known for pushing conservative causes popular in his Panhandle district. He expects the hearings to draw national attention, and he says he’s ready for the debate.

[….] The country’s first solar power plant opened in the spring, and six more are in the works. The solar farm now generates enough electricity to power 780 homes and had saved the equivalent of 145 tons of fossil fuels, or around 1,060 barrels of crude, through the end of July. Peak capacity is expected to hit 2.6 megawatts when the final panels are in place in September.[….]

Hopes are high that solar can be a big winner in Cuba, which enjoys
direct sunlight year-round, allowing for consistent high yields of 5
kilowatt-hours per square meter of terrain.[….]

    – — –Eclectic group to enter Pro Football Hall of Fame – –
    – – – – – –CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Those Super Bowl rings will have a blinding shine to them at Saturday night’s Pro Football Hall of Fame inductions.

From a championship coach to linemen on both sides of the ball, the 2013 class features an enviable resume of success.

There’s Bill Parcells, winner of two NFL titles as a coach and master
of the franchise turnaround. Jonathan Ogden, one of the premier
offensive tackles of his time and owner of a Super Bowl ring. Larry
Allen, to whom the same accolades can be applied, and a 1995 champion.

Warren Sapp, an outstanding defensive tackle with a personality as big as any football stadium — and a 2002 champ.

Dave Robinson, a major cog in Green Bay’s championship machine under Vince Lombardi, winning the first two Super Bowls. Curley Culp, one of the original pass-rushing demons at defensive tackle who got his ring with the 1969 Chiefs.

Indeed, only wide receiver Cris Carter, merely No. 4 in career receptions and TD catches, is the only member of this year’s class who never won a title.

Quite a group for the Hall’s 50th anniversary celebration, which began Friday with a record 120 hall members expected to attend the ceremonies.

Imma have to call my boy. He’ll say it’s about damn time Carter made it. He always said Carter was a better receiver than Michael Irvin to which I’d say hell to the no. Salty about Irvin making HOF before Carter, I’d tell him “Jewelry boieee!” (circling my fingers.)

A little help: Ogden Baltimore Raven lineman. The ring the D won, not Trent Dilfer (ESPN noisemaker.) Larry Allen – Da Boyz. Blocked for HO Famers Troy/Emmitt/Michael! Sapp – led Tampa Bays defense that won after they let Coach Tony Dungy go. I lost all respect for that franchise for that. Robinson – before my time. Culp – before I watched football.

You probably already know those I spoke of, just not the oldtimers.

          • Miranda

Doesn’t Trent Dilfer just get on your last nerve? (it can’t be just me)

The Secret Alleged Sex Scandal Behind The Mysterious Arrest Of A Utah Sheriff’s Deputy

“He went up to check on where his wife was,” one officer recounted in the reports. “He stated that when he opened the door to his son’s room, he saw his wife on top of his dad” having sex.

The sight of his father having sex with his wife allegedly sent TJ into a rage. He “beat the fuck” out of his dad, he later told police. Logan, TJ’s wife, told police later that night that TJ had hit her and “pistol whipped” his father with one of multiple guns he kept in his home. She also allegedly said all three of them had been drinking. The officer’s account of his interview with Logan does not specifically address the claim that she and Corky were having sex. Corky’s injuries prevented him from speaking to officers that night, the records show.

Somehow, after the alleged confrontation in the bedroom at TJ’s home, all three participants managed to leave the residence. Logan went to her parents’ house. In his incident report, Moab Police Officer Shaun Hansen said Corky, the father, returned to his own home where he was “apparently looking for a firearm.”

“His wife, Cindy Brewer, denied him access to a firearm,” Hansen wrote in his report. “Corky then grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed himself two times, puncturing a lung and slicing his liver.”

Corky was initially taken to Moab Regional Hospital. According to the police, when TJ learned his father was hospitalized, he headed to the hospital to kill him.

      White on White crime?

(LOLOL – I knew before I even clicked the link….)

Using Bill O’Reilley standards, this story is clear evidence of a totally “Dysfunctional White Culture.” Something must be terribly wrong with a culture in which a father thinks that it’s o.k. to have has sex with his son’s wife. No wonder the son went crazy with rage. To make matters worse, the family members, involved in this bizarre story, are all supposedly trusted law enforcement people.

In Missouri, Race Complicates a Transfer to Better Schools
    Published: July 31, 2013 305 Comments

ST. CHARLES, Mo. — When the Missouri Supreme Court upheld a law in June allowing students from failing school districts to transfer to good ones, Harriett Gladney saw a path to a better education for her 9-year-old daughter.

But then she watched television news clips from a town hall meeting for the Francis Howell School District, the predominantly white district here that her daughter’s mostly black district, Normandy, had chosen as a transfer site. Normandy, in neighboring St. Louis County, has one of the worst disciplinary rates in the state, and Francis Howell parents angrily protested the transfer of Normandy students across the county line, some yelling that their children could be stabbed and that the district’s academic standards would slip.

“When I saw them screaming and hollering like they were crazy, I thought to myself, ‘Oh my God, this is back in Martin Luther King days,’ ” said Ms. Gladney, 45. “ ‘They’re going to get the hoses out. They’re going to be beating our kids and making sure they don’t get off the school bus.’ ”

Why is the only solution always white areas? Why can’t they put the money, time and effort in black areas the same way do white areas. I know the answer but this gets old, why must we have our kids getting up at 5:30 in the morning to go to school. Then they’re tired and listless and their school works suffer, then they’ll say see they can’t learn no matter what school they go to. It’s the same shit that’s been going on forever! Just give our children the same chance you give yours dammit!

    – – – —+ –People who treat other people as less than human must not be surprised when the bread they have cast on the waters comes floating back to them, poisoned.
Baldwin, James. No Name in the Street. 1972.

    – — – – -+–Well, if one really wishes to know how justice is administered in a country, one does not question the policemen, the lawyers, the judges, or the protected members of the middle class. One goes to the unprotected — those, precisely, who need the law’s protection most! — and listens to their testimony. Ask any Mexican, any Puerto Rican, any black man, any poor person — ask the wretched how they fare in the halls of justice, and then you will know, not whether or not the country is just, but whether or not it has any love for justice, or any concept of it. It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.
