Michael Bloomberg: Police stop minorities ‘too little’, whites ‘too much’
by Associated Press | June 28, 2013 at 3:33 PM

NEW YORK (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s remark that police “disproportionately stop whites too much and minorities too little,” as compared with suspects’ descriptions, is prompting criticism from police reform advocates and some mayoral candidates.

Bloomberg made the comment Friday on WOR-AM. City lawmakers voted Thursday to make it easier to bring racial profiling claims against police.

Eighty-seven percent of the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers stopped, questioned and sometimes frisked in recent years were black or Hispanic. These groups comprise 54 percent of the city population.

MBDA Sets Job Creation Record For Minority Owned Businesses
    Jun 28, 2013

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) has released its annual performance report for fiscal year 2012. The data shows that MBDA and its national Business Centers assisted in helping several minority-owned businesses gain over $3.6 billion in contracts and capital. Additionally, nearly 17,000 jobs were created or retained, marking a new record in the agency’s 44-year existence.

From the Commerce Department’s press office this week:

“Today’s report illustrates the crucial role MBDA plays in helping U.S. minority-owned businesses grow and expand globally, particularly because of the quantifiable return on investment and impact these businesses have on our economy,” said David A. Hinson, MBDA National Director. “In his 2013 State of the Union speech, President Obama outlined his vision for making America a magnet for investment, innovation, and economic growth. While we have made significant progress, much work remains to ensure that opportunities to prosper are open to all entrepreneurs who are pursuing the American dream, especially our minority business owners.”

North Carolina axes benefits for long-term unemployed
    Ned Resnikoff, @resnikoff
    3:01 PM on 06/28/2013

Starting next week, North Carolina—which has the fifth highest jobless rate in the country—will become the only state in the union with no safety net for the long-term jobless. Thanks to reforms in the state’s unemployment insurance laws, North Carolina’s 71,000-plus long-term unemployed residents will lose access to the federally funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program.

North Carolina is losing eligibility to the federal program because of a new law, signed by the governor in February of this year, which reduces the number of weeks that unemployed people are eligible for state-funded benefits and cuts the maximum weekly benefit amount by roughly one third, from $535 to $350. It is the latter provision that has cost North Carolina workers its eligibility: States looking to receive federal EUC money are forbidden from cutting weekly benefits. The federal government granted a special exemption from that rule to four other states last year, North Carolina’s request for a similar exemption was ignored.

“I would call these cuts obscene,” said Michael Leachman, director of state fiscal research for the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Snowden’s father gives conditions for his son’s return

Lonnie Snowden, the father of Edward Snowden, the former government contractor accused of espionage, has sent Attorney General Eric Holder a list of conditions that he believes could help secure his son’s return to the U.S. to face trial.

In a letter sent to Holder on Thursday, Lonnie Snowden’s lawyer Bruce Fein detailed the three conditions: No detention or imprisonment prior to trial, no gag order, and allowing Edward Snowden to choose the venue for the trial.

Privilege indeed! What’s so infuriating is that CBS didn’t push back. Since when does an alleged criminal dictate the conditions on how he should be tried and treated. I personally could care less if Snowden remains holed up at Moscow airport or goes to the U.S. What I care about is that upon his arrival in the U.S., Snowden should be detained and tried as any other traitor.

South Africa’s Mandela ‘improving’ as Obama flies in
    PRETORIA/JOHANNESBURG | Fri Jun 28, 2013 6:12pm EDT

(Reuters) – South Africa’s ailing anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela is doing much better in hospital, his ex-wife Winnie said on Friday, as U.S. PresidentBarack Obama arrived for a visit that will pay homage to a man he calls his “personal hero”.

The faltering health of the first black president of South Africa, a revered symbol of racial reconciliation, has drawn world attention since the 94-year-old was rushed to hospital with a recurring lung infection nearly three weeks ago.

Earlier this week, the government said Mandela’s frail condition had turned critical, but since Thursday President Jacob Zuma has reported that his health is improving.

Chris Hayes And Linguistics Expert Break Down Rachel Jeantel’s ‘Articulate’ Use Of Black English

Rachel Jeantel, the star prosecution witness in the George Zimmerman murder trial, has been the subject of barely-masked racial and intellectual contempt since she took the stand on Wednesday, and on Thursday night’s All In with Chris Hayes, host Chris Hayes and linguistics expert John McWhorter called out the ugly treatment she has received. — – –The

Alec Baldwin Gets a Pass ‘Cause We’re Shameless Starf**kers

Alec Baldwin just got a “Get Out of Homophobia Jail Free” card from the people at GLAAD … because they don’t have the balls to go after a self-proclaimed Hollywood liberal.

After Baldwin essentially called for the gay-bashing of a Daily Mail reporter … the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation — the same org. that’s CRUSHED people for making far less harmful and threatening
statements — asked critics to back off Baldwin.

“Alec Baldwin is making it clear [to GLAAD] that the intent behind his tweets does not excuse his language, especially at a time when there were 11 incidents of violence against gay men in New York City just last month. As we all work to end such senseless acts of violence, allies like Baldwin are right to use these moments to reinforce support for the community and LGBT equality.”

But the statement continues … and might reveal the REAL reason they’re letting Alec off easy:

“Alec Baldwin has worked with several organizations and added his voice to a campaign by Fight Back NY to encourage the State Senate to pass marriage equality with out actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson. He also had a guest role on Will & Grace and played a gay character in the 2006 Off-Broadway revival of ‘Entertaining Mr. Sloane.'”

It’s almost like the org. is afraid if they bash Baldwin, he’ll STOP doing pro-gay projects. Hmmmm …

Women Fight Back: Ohio Bill Makes Erectile Dysfunction Her Business

You want to regulate our ovaries, uteri and order us to carry
state-mandated children? Well, fine. We want to regulate your erectile dysfunction. That’s the message of state Democratic Senator Nina Turner’s erectile dysfunction bill in Ohio (SB307).

The bill is meant to inflict the same sort of humiliation and violation of privacy on men as mostly male legislators are inflicting upon women across the country, but is wisely being sold under the exact same disingenuous “concern” as Republicans sell their attempts to control women’s wombs. Turner sweetly pointed out, “I certainly want to stand up for men’s health and take this seriously and legislate it the same way mostly men say they want to legislate a woman’s womb.”

Alrighty, Nic Cage fans will love this. I’m watching The Rock with Sean Connery and Nic Cage. I really need to get this one on BluRay. Makes me wonder how Sean Connery’s health is going. I remember seeing a vid of him congratulating the dude who won the Olympic Gold medal in tennis. At 80, I understand he’s been full on retired for some time now though.

  • lamh36

Man, I am so tired of having the same convo with this friend of mine. She just don’t seem to care that the VRA gutting by SCOTUS is a big deal. She was already on the everybody should have ID train (which I don’t wholly disagree with), but the idea that it should NOT be hard for people to get that ID than it is for other just doesn’t matter for her. She has always had this Liberaterian leanings, she actually was inclined to vote for Ron Paul but her husband who is a city boy was def not a Ron Paul fan.

I swear if she was white, she don’t even realize that the stuff she be saying ain’t no different than RWNJ white folk sometime.

I think she’s a good person, but I have learned to just keep it moving when it comes to the subject. I’m hoping as she gets older she learns better, but who knows. Some people who are kind to family and friends are just selfish when it comes to anyone else. SMH

    • Aquagranny911

Lamh, I think a lot of younger people may not know how hard & expensive it can be for some folks to get ID because they have had driver’s license, maybe passports etc since they were 16.

A lot of states are making it real hard for some folks to get photo ID, even if they have been registered voters for years. I think your friend may just not realize all this.

      • Tafr

You know I honestly believe our black leadership has let us down when it comes to ID’s. Instead of thinking about the VRA as set in stone they should of thought of it as insurance. There should be an effort to help black people get ID’s not only for voting but for everyday life. The CBC failed on this front, the black leadership failed on this front.

        • Aquagranny911

This is why we have to start now to get folks those ID’s & make sure they can vote. You & I both know that there will be concerted efforts to disenfranchise voters.

Sis & I have been talking about how we could maybe set up some kind of fund to help those with limited means get where they need to go & get those ID’s here in AZ.

We have to start now. We can’t wait & we have to do it ourselves. I mean everybody where ever you live, do what you can.

          • Tafr

Exactly! We need activist such as you AG. We cannot wait for so call leadership. As far as I am concern so called leadership ain’t shit

      • lamh36

I think you are right AG. I actually just talked to her and it was to continue the conversation we started on FB…lol. We are good friends and back in DFW, we’d talk politics all the time over lunch or dinner at our fav Mex or Indian restaurant.

She is a good person and we just agree to disagree, but I can also sometimes get pretty passionate and not explain things as well as I can..lol

  • TresL

I think it’s time to just say that GLAAD is a racist organization. I’ve been thinking it for a while now and with each offense and double standard, it is crystal clear to me that these are a bunch of white, selfish, ungrateful, racist and nasty people who are clearly only concerned about “their” rights and are only offended when the people making anti-gay statements are black.

I must say that until these last few years I did not think about gay issues at all. They were just not on my radar and because of that I wasn’t for or against anything concerning gay people. I would imagine because I don’t really know anyone who is gay. I have had at least two co-workers in the past who were gay black men but my contact with them was minimal and uneventful but groups like GLAAD and people like Rachel Maddow and Dan Savage are forcing me to form an opinion, an increasingly negative opinion at that. I wish they had an inoffensive spokesperson or organization to represent them publicly while keeping their assholes out of public view. The nastiness with which they’ve treated PBO while lauding both Clintons, the way they go after black celebs with a vengeance and as we see today completely contradict and discredit themselves while giving a pass to a white celeb. The way they persist on blaming black people for prop 8 when nationally we’re only 12% of the population and far less than that in CA. There are no black people, unlike Mormons and the Christian Right, who would spend a dime, even if they had it, on an anti-gay proposal. It’s not that important to us when you consider what we endure on a daily basis. The way our “so-called leaders” are constantly recognizing and co-signing their fight for equality while they can’t find the words or the time to do the same for us or any other group for that matter. To put it simply, they make me sick. In the short span of PBO’s time in office, I’ve gone from feeling nothing to feeling nothing but contempt.

And I know there are likely many gay people who give PBO the respect and credit he deserves but they clearly don’t have the platform or the megaphone of those who don’t.

them giving Bill Clinton the award instead of President Obama was the truest tell of all.

      as I’ve been saying,

them giving Bill Clinton the award

was akin to after the passage of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act..

the NAACP giving the Springarn Medal..

not to President Lyndon Baines Johnson..

      but to Strom Thurmond.

it made THAT kind of sense.

Just a bad look and disrespectful to Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin in my opinion.

Moving warfare to a new front is a financial necessity for the Military Industrial Complex. The MIC is the greatest loser as PBO winds down global warfare, it leaves them rudderless and without purpose. AFAIC, the Army using GG/Snowden “leaks” to “restrict access” at the Guardian is just a test which establish imaginary boundary lines and means to define when cyberwar starts.

    — — –Venus Vs’: Ava DuVernay Directs Feature Doc On Activist Venus Williams
—– —Venus Vs.,” directed by award-winning director Ava DuVernay will highlight the story of tennis star Venus Williams and her journey from practicing with her father and sister in Compton to competing on a national level and her fight for equal prize money for female tennis players at Wimbledon.

The film showcases various scenes of the tennis star’s struggles on the court including the time where Williams is deducted points for some of her hair beads falling during a tournament.

“I’m not going to say it’s a total distraction but it is a little annoying. It’s just things flying in the air that you’re not supposed to be seeing,” a statement given by tennis player Lindsay Davenport back in 1999.

The cultural significance of her beads is something that isn’t
understood by white tennis spectators and media, Davenport’s quote suggests.

The film doesn’t delve into topics such as her love life or the
perspective of her sister Serena. Its sole focus is Venus’s relationship with the sport of tennis and how it transcended into a fight for equal pay at Wimbledon. Her fight is similar to that of Billie Jean King, a former women’s tennis champion, who rallied for equal pay at the U.S. Open and won in 1972.

    Ten Miles Square
    June 26, 2013 2:28 PM Housing Boom a Bust for First-Time Buyers

    By Anne Kim

Three years ago, Matt Morgan launched his own interior design firm in Washington, D.C. At age 32, his business is thriving, with a roster of high-end homeowners among his clients, many of whom live in Washington’s toniest suburbs.

    Morgan himself, however, rents.

He pays $2,500 a month for an apartment in D.C., has a credit score of 800, but still can’t qualify for a mortgage. His net income as a small business owner is deemed too low by lenders for the size of mortgage he would need in D.C’s white-hot housing market, where some one-bedroom condos are selling for upwards of $500,000. “Maybe some day when I’m married and have a double income I’ll start thinking about buying,” he says.

Morgan is not alone among frustrated would-be homebuyers who are finding themselves shut out of the nascent housing recovery.

While home sales, home prices and home construction are surging nationwide – existing home sales are at their highest level since November 2009 – first-time homebuyers are the one group that’s missing in action.

First-time homebuyers accounted for just 28 percent of home sales in May, according to the National Association of Realtors – down from 34 percent in May 2012 and a historical average of about 40 percent. Moreover, says the Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies in a new report, the homeownership rate among 25 to 54 year olds is at its lowest since 1976.
