    – — Bernanke: Spending Cuts Harming The Economy, May Lead To Further Fed Stimulus – —

    – – -In a speech delivered at a Federal Reserve retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke warned Friday in unusually clear terms that spending cuts at both the federal, state, and local level have become significant impediments to economic growth, and made a public case for further monetary easing — remarks which have leading fed watchers predicting that the central bank will announce a new round of asset purchases (so-called quantitative easing) in September.

“[F]iscal policy, at both the federal and state and local levels, has become an important headwind for the pace of economic growth,” Bernanke said. “Notwithstanding some recent improvement in tax revenues, state and local governments still face tight budget situations and continue to cut real spending and employment. Real purchases are also declining at the federal level. Uncertainties about fiscal policy, notably about the resolution of the so-called fiscal cliff and the lifting of the debt ceiling, are probably also restraining activity, although the magnitudes of these effects are hard to judge.”

Bernanke explained that further quantitative easing could have a substantial impact on employment, and even argued that earlier rounds of large-scale asset purchases led to the creation of two million more private sector jobs than the economy would’ve produced on its own.

Wow. The KKKRethugs are disgusting; how anyone can claim to be in this party is beyond me.

    This is horrifying.

7:30 p.m. A leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, introduced as only “Ken Hutchins of Massachusetts,” offers the opening benediction. It’s an eloquent tribute to “our kind and loving heavenly father” in the “sacred and holy name of Jesus Christ.” As he prays, a Spanish-speaking television reporter does a live broadcast at one end of the arena. Delegates try to hit her with a cowboy hat and a water bottle to make her stop talking. But they can’t quite reach her. The final night of the Republican convention is underway.

A water bottle? Those asses should have been arrested; I can’t believe there wasn’t more of an uproar about this and the CNN camerawoman. It makes me wonder what else happened that hasn’t been reported.

hey everyone! Catching up on the convention from last night. I just want to clear up something. When I said DWS reminded me of a black woman, I didn’t mean her hair, I meant her voice. I have to do a double take sometimes when I see her on the TV and hear her speak. Her hair is a bit dry, but her voice–she has a bit of bass in it–sounds black to me.

    • Tafr

Yea I think that when I hear her speak.

      • JojoRaze

The thing is she’s a Queens girl…but it seems to me that she must have learned politics from black pols in NYC because her face says Fran Drescher Flushing, but her voice says a mixture of Fannie Lou Hamer and Shirley Chisolm.

I wouldn’t be surprised though, if she imitated the black female political figures she knew of coming up, since Fannie Lou and Shirley were big figures in Democratic Party politics.

President Obama will sign executive order to boost mental-health services for vets before Fort Bliss visit

Veterans struggling with mental-health and substance-abuse problems are expected to benefit from an executive order President Barack Obama is scheduled to sign Friday before he arrives at Fort Bliss.[....] In particular, the order directs federal officials to increase the number of VA mental-health professionals, improve suicide prevention efforts, create joint ventures between the VA and local mental-health care providers and push research that will improve diagnosis and treatment of problems including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries.

Obama’s order includes some efforts already under way. In June, VA Secretary Eric Shinseki announced the department was preparing to add about 1,600 mental-health clinicians and 300 support staff. El Paso was expected to receive 11 of those clinicians and two support personnel. Each additional mental- health care provider could potentially reach hundreds more veterans, Shinseki said.[....]

Lie of Omission: Republican Convention Pretends Iraq and Afghanistan Never Happened

[....]One hopes that Americans tuning in to the parade of lies notice that Republicans have not mentioned the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and especially the thousands of military families who have lost loved ones to those horrible conflicts that were unnecessary and unfunded. America’s economy would not be in the shape it finds itself today if America had not invaded two sovereign nations that had nothing to do with the terror attacks on 9/11 and it is why Republicans avoid any mention of them like plague.[....]

Instead, Romney and Republicans will claim Americans are worried about nuclear Iran, “threat of war” from “geopolitical enemies” like Russia, the threat to Israel, and the debt President Obama inherited from Bush-Republicans for two costly wars that had a profoundly negative effect on the world and America’s economy. Republicans made their convention a festival of lies, but the biggest lie was one of omission and hopefully Americans are being astute and discriminating listeners and taking note that the $5 trillion wars have not been mentioned one time and begin asking why not.

    #Eastwooding, Ctd

Of course it could simply be that he’s a huge star and not many have already endorsed Romney. Another reader offers a “much darker interpretation”:

Like most viewers I thought Clint’s presentation was odd, sad, laughable, incongruous. Somehow this was a moment that just didn’t work out. But it was President Obama’s response tweet that got me thinking at a much deeper level.

Obama responds with a picture of himself sitting in his chair in the Oval Office, back turned to the viewer, saying, “This chair is taken.” Directly to Romney, terse and defiant. Why did Obama respond to that moment, Clint’s strange rambling off-topic schtick? Isn’t Obama too smart to respond? But Obama’s response was so pointed, so potent. Clearly something needed to be addressed.

So I went back to the whole Clint Eastwood stunt and re-watched it a few times with a critical eye. Here’s what I come up with: that was an intentional act of imagined violence against President Obama at a deep, semiotic level of American mythos. Take the optics: Clint comes out under a huge backdrop of the Western gunslinger. He starts a monologue vs. “the punk.” (Do you feel lucky, punk? Well do you?) The punk, the empty chair, the empty suit, responds by telling Romney, “Go fuck yourself.” Clint scolds Obama and leads the crowd in a chant, “Go ahead. Make my day.” At which point, as we all know, offstage, Clint would then shoot the punk and kill him. This was a very public, very imaginative enactment of violence against the sitting President of the US

    • jds09

I think Sullivan is on to something here. I still haven’t wrapped my brain around how profoundly disrespectful Eastwood was to PBO. It was almost like old white men called up their champion to do battle with the neighborhood thug. And in their fantasy they can take him out.

      Reality is another matter.

    – – –Mitt Romney Blows Off Fox News and Watches GOP Convention on C-SPAN – –

    – – – –Mitt Romney proved once again that he is not really good at this being a Republican thing, as his personal aide tweeted a pic of him watching the RNC convention on C-SPAN, not Fox News.

Here is the pic from Mitt’s Body Man:
It is okay, Mitt. You could have watched Fox News. They booted Sarah Palin off of the convention coverage for you. For a candidate that has some serious credibility issues with conservatives, Mitt Romney excels at making things worse. While vice president, Dick Cheney required all television sets in his presence to be turned on to Fox News.

In 2008, John McCain and Sarah Palin kept their televisions tuned in to FNC. Fox News is the only cable channel for news if you are a Republican. Maybe Mitt was watching C-SPAN because he doesn’t like commercials?

The picture was posted 38 minutes before Romney took the stage for his acceptance speech. A more likely explanation is that he was watching C-SPAN because they provide uninterrupted coverage without all the talking heads and pundits.

Biden: Obama leadership saved auto plants

Vice President Joe Biden mounted the Democratic counterpoint to the Republican presidential ticket Friday, drawing attention to the Obama administration’s rescue of the auto industry and portraying GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney as a foe of government efforts to save jobs.[....]

“They call their plan new, bold and gutsy,” Biden told about 200 supporters in a union hall. “There is nothing gutsy about giving another trillion dollars in tax cuts to millionaires; there is nothing bold about turning Medicare into a voucher system. There is nothing bold about kicking 19 million kids and elderly off of Medicaid with no place else to go.”[....]

Sen. Harry Reid resumes antagonizing Mitt Romney, this time over his visit to Louisiana, via WaPo:

“It is the height of hypocrisy for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to make a pretense of showing sympathy for the victims of Hurricane Isaac when their policies would leave those affected by this disaster stranded and on their own,” Reid said.

“If Paul Ryan and his fellow House Republicans had succeeded in blocking disaster relief last fall, there would have been no aid for the victims of Isaac today. And Paul Ryan’s budget would gut disaster funding, making it much harder to get aid to our fellow Americans in their time of need,” he added.

Mitt Romney: Federal Disaster Relief For Tornado And Flood Victims Is ‘Immoral,’ ‘Makes No Sense At All’

By Brad Johnson on Jun 14, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Asked about federal disaster relief for recent tornado and flood victims at last night’s GOP debate, candidate Mitt Romney called the spending “immoral” and said the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be privatized. With greenhouse pollution on the rise, the United States has been struck by a “punishing series of billion-dollar disasters.”

Embracing a radical anti-government ideology from the most extreme elements of the Tea Party, Romney said that the victims in Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and other communities hit by tornadoes and flooding should not receive governmental assistance. He argued it is “simply immoral” for there to be deficit spending that could harm future generations:

Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better. [...] We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we’ll all be dead and gone before it’s paid off. It makes no sense at all.

Minority, Dem groups act to challenge interim redistricting maps

Several key minority and Democratic groups took a first step Wednesday toward challenging Texas’ interim redistricting maps, put in place for the 2012 election, by filing a request for a preliminary hearing in federal court.[....]While those maps never took effect, the interim maps that were drawn by a panel of three federal judges in San Antonio for the 2012 election had to be based on the Legislature’s now-rejected maps.

“Over 90 percent of the map is the legislative map, that has been found to be illegal,” said Luis Vera, an attorney with the League of United Latin American Citizens. “You can’t have an election with an illegal map.” He added: “That’s our objective — to get lines drawn that are legal, that are constitutional and that comply with the D.C. order.[....]

Surprise! The GOP’s climate position tracks closely with oil industry donations

The Washington Post created a graphic tracking how the Republican Party platform has changed on various issues over the years. The whole thing is worth a look — but we found this subsection interesting (for obvious reasons). To break it out:

1988: The GOP recognizes climate change.
1992: The platform talks about funding to combat climate change.
1996, 2000: The party moves backward, citing “uncertainty” on the role of humans.
2004: The GOP commits to addressing climate. This is after Bush, up for reelection, kills involvement in the Kyoto Protocol.
2008: With candidate McCain, the party accepts a human role.
2012 (not on the graphic): The platform mentions climate only to mock Obama for considering it a security threat.

What has inspired this back-and-forth on their position? We have a theory. Using data from OpenSecrets, we went back and looked at how the oil and gas industry has contributed to Republican politics since 2000.[....]

Three days after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called California Gov. Jerry Brown an “old retread,” the Democratic governor fired back on Thursday, challenging Christie to a physical fitness contest.

“There’s nothing wrong with being a little retread,” the 74-year-old, third-term governor told members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770 in Los Angeles. “Not as much hair, I’m slowed down a little bit. But I have to tell you, I ran three miles in 29 minutes two nights ago … and I hereby challenge Gov. Christie to a three-mile race, a pushup contest and a chin-up contest. And whatever he wants to bet, I have no doubt of the outcome.”

Romney Bombs: Convention Speech Draws 13 Million Fewer Viewers than McCain in ’08

Mitt Romney’s convention speech was watched by 25 million Americans, which is 13 million fewer viewers than watched John McCain accept the Republican nomination in 2008. Mitt Romney’s inability to captivate the nation resulted in a gain of only 5 million viewers from the second night to the third night of the Republican convention.

The Romney campaign was counting on widespread viewership, outside of the GOP, but 39% of their audience came from Fox News. Fox was the top network with over 9 million viewers, followed by ABC (4.44 million), NBC (3.85 million), CBS (3.73 million), CNN (2.33 million), and MSNBC (1.88 million). In contrast, over 38 million Americans watched John McCain’s speech in 2008.[...]

Machine is unplug, she plugs it back in and can’t get it to work. I say “ if it’s a lot of trouble I can go to the machine and get some cash.” No No No, I’ll get it, I have to learn how to do it. She thinks she got it, I try and it still isn’t working. Finally I go to the machine to get the cash. I come back, she says she has no change lmao. OK Ok, she goes to get more change, LEAVES ME RUNNING THE STORE lol. I could have robbed her blind.

I see her going one way (at this time I’m finding the whole thing incredibly amusing). She yells at me too sit; sit (in a chair at the front of the store). Then I see her come back, the store she went to is apparently closed or something. She heads in the other direction. I’m still minding the store. She comes back FINALLY CHANGE, all in coins mind you lol

Items purchased. Just out of curiosity, I head to the store on the corner selling similar items, owned by South Asians. Yup ALL CHEAPER! As you all say My people, My people, why?

    – – –Federal judge restores early voting days in Ohio – – –

    – — -What a week for democracy!

On Wednesday, a federal judge said he’d issue a permanent injunction against provisions in that state’s new election law that restricts third-party voter registration drives.

Yesterday, a federal appeals court in Washington struck down the Texas voter ID law requiring photos for voters at the polls, calling it racially discriminatory.

Then today, a federal judge in Ohio issued a preliminary injunction in the case involving state law that cuts off early voting on the Friday evening before a Tuesday election, except for military personnel and Ohio voters living overseas.

U.S. District Judge Peter Economus concluded that the law violates the Constitution’s guarantee that all voters enjoy equal access to the franchise.

Republicans passed the law in an effort to suppress the vote, making it more difficult for Democratic constituencies to vote.

Attorney General Mike DeWine quickly announced he would appeal the decision.

Ed is very passionate about the issue of voter suppression and he’ll dive into today’s decision tonight at 8pET on MSNBC with outspoken state Sen. Nina Turner (D-OH).

    – – –Team Obama: Romney Blew The Opportunity To ‘Talk Directly To The American People’

    – —-Obama campaign senior advisor David Axelrod and deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said there was one thing missing from the Republican National Convention — anything of substance.

“He [GOP nominee Mitt Romney] was given the opportunity to talk directly to the American people, and he didn’t,” Cutter said on a conference call Friday with reporters, organized by the Obama campaign. “There was a reason why they left out the details in a three-day convention in Tampa, because even according to a senior Romney advisor, it would be political suicide to walk through those details.”

The overall message of the Obama team on the day after the Republican convention ended was that Romney and the Republicans had offered so few substantive proposals in Tampa that there was little to be rebutted — and that the relentless attacks of President Obama missed the mark.

    – – -Kristol Blasts Romney For Ignoring Afghanistan, U.S. Troops In Convention Speech

    – – – – -Weekly Standard editor and influential right-wing foreign policy voice Bill Kristol criticized Mitt Romney for ignoring the war in Afghanistan and the military in his speech to the Republican National Convention last night. In a short, scathing piece Kristol put up on the Standard’s website shortly after the speech, the neocon don scolded Romney for not uttering “a word of appreciation” to American troops fighting in Afghanistan:

The United States has some 68,000 troops fighting in Afghanistan. Over two thousand Americans have died in the more than ten years of that war, a war Mitt Romney has supported. Yet in his speech accepting his party’s nomination to be commander in chief, Mitt Romney said not a word about the war in Afghanistan. Nor did he utter a word of appreciation to the troops fighting there, or to those who have fought there. Nor for that matter were there thanks for those who fought in Iraq, another conflict that went unmentioned.

    – – – – -The White House and President Obama’s campaign are criticizing Mitt Romney for not mentioning the troops in his convention address Thursday night.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said he was surprised Romney didn’t mention troops in Afghanistan, while the Obama campaign knocked the GOP candidate for not finding the time to talk about the troops during a 45-minute address that closed the GOP convention.

“I can simply speak for myself that I was surprised not to hear mention of the 70,000 men and women who are serving in Afghanistan, executing a mission that is profoundly important to America’s national security in a conflict that was the direct result of an attack on the United States by al Qaeda,” Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter echoed this sentiment in a conference call with reporters on Friday.

“In an almost 45-minute speech Romney didn’t find time to mention our troops in Afghanistan,” she said.

Jon Stewart’s initial segment was golden. The best I”ve seen from him all season, but you can bet he’ll be back to his usual. STill watch tonight’s segment.

    – – – –Doctors, Patients Rally In Support Of Obamacare In Tampa On The Last Day Of The RNC – –

    – – – –As Republicans gathered for the final day of their national convention here in Tampa, a small but vocal group of doctors, medical students and patients marched in the heat to deliver thousands of petitions in support of the Affordable Care Act.

One of the marchers, Kenya Wheeler, was a grad student last year when he was diagnosed with CNS lymphoma, a form of blood cancer in his brain. Despite being covered through his university’s insurance plan, Wheeler quickly hit the lifetime cap on his coverage. On Thursday, he marched as a representative for thousands of other patients who stand to benefit when the lifetime cap provision of Obamacare goes into effect in 2014.

    – – – -SNIP –
“I am sincerely sick and tired of the political fighting over patients’ health,” he said. “The Affordable Care Act passed in Congress. It was upheld by the Supreme Court. Now it’s time to focus on making sure patients receive proper care.”

Women, minorities added to roster in Charlotte – – –

    – – – – Democratic National Convention organizers on Friday released the names of more expected speakers in Charlotte, and the lineup reflects a heavy focus on women and minorities.

Not unexpectedly, House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) are among the newly announced speakers, CNN’s Jessica Yellin reports.

Pelosi will lead a special presentation of other female House members, including Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.), Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.), Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D-Penn.), and Rep. Nydia Velasquez (D-N.Y.), according to CNN. It’s unclear if they will have full speaking roles.

The announcement brings the number of female participants to 28, out of a total of 61 people who will take the stage identified so far.

Also added to the roster are Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.), chair of Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus; Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus; Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, chair of the congressional Hispanic Caucus; and Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.).

Politico thinks they’re slick. The title reads like the Dems hadn’t previously scheduled women and POC to speak, which we all know is bs.

First Chuck Todd and now this. The media is trying to create a false narrative that in reality, the Repubs are more racially diverse than the Dems.
