Friday Open Thread: African American Playwrights

George C. Wolfe grew up in Frankfort, Kentucky and began to pursue his interest in the dramatic arts while still in grade school. At Frankfort High School, Wolfe directed and performed in several plays and wrote poetry and prose for his high school literary journal. The actor, playwright and director received a BA in Directing from Pomona College in Claremont, California.

After graduation, Wolfe taught at the Inner-City Cultural Center in Los Angeles for several years before moving to New York, where he earned his MFA in dramatic writing and musical theater at New York University.

Wolfe’s first off-Broadway productions, the musical Paradise and the play The Colored Museum, were met with mixed reviews. It wasn’t until his 1991 production, Jelly’s Last Jam, a musical about jazz musician Jazz Roll Morton, that Wolfe received national notice. Jelly’s Last Jam received 11 Tony nominations. Wolfe’s first Tony Award came just two years later with Angels in America: Millennium Approaches.

From 1993 to 2004, Wolfe served as the Artistic Director and producer for the New York Shakespeare Festival. In 1996, he created the musical Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk, a combination of tap and music which earned him his second Tony Award.

Although Wolfe made the decision to pursue film direction in 2004, he kept his hand in theater. He directed such plays as Tony Kushner’s Caroline, or Change, Suzan-Lori Parks’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Topdog/Underdog, and a new translation of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and Austin Pendleton.

Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed is a musical with a score by Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle and a libretto by George C. Wolfe, based on the original book of the 1921 musical revue Shuffle Along. The story focuses on the challenges of mounting the original production of Shuffle Along and its effect on Broadway and race relations.

The musical played on Broadway in 2016 and starred Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Billy Porter. The initial critical response was mostly positive, with special praise from many critics for McDonald’s performance. The production was nominated for ten Tony Awards but did not win any; it won four Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical. Shuffle Along closed on July 24, 2016 after 38 previews and 100 regular performances.

Tillerson says ‘all options are on the table’ when it comes to North Korea

    Source: The Washington Post

By Anna Fifield March 17 at 6:52 AM

TOKYO — The Trump administration gave its clearest signal yet that it would consider taking military action against North Korea, with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson saying Friday that “all options are on the table” to deter the threat from Pyongyang.

Tensions are running high in northeast Asia, with North Korea making observable progress toward its goal of building a missile that could reach the United States mainland and China incensed over South Korea’s decision to deploy an American antimissile battery.

Tillerson’s remarks, ruling out diplomatic talks and leaving the door open to military action, will fuel fears in the region that the Trump administration is seriously considering what are euphemistically called “kinetic” options in Washington.

“Let me be very clear: the policy of strategic patience has ended,” Tillerson said at a news conference in Seoul with Yun Byung-se, the South Korean foreign minister. He was referring to the Obama administration policy of trying to wait North Korea out, hoping that sanctions would prove so crippling that Pyongyang would have no choice but to return to de-nuclearization negotiations.

Rex Tillerson Rejects Talks With North Korea on Nuclear Program

    DAVID E. SANGER MARCH 17, 2017

SEOUL, South Korea — Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson ruled out on Friday opening any negotiation with North Korea to freeze its nuclear and missile programs and said for the first time that the Trump administration might be forced to take pre-emptive action “if they elevate the threat of their weapons program” to an unacceptable level.

Mr. Tillerson’s comments in Seoul, a day before he travels to Beijing to meet Chinese leaders, explicitly rejected any return to the bargaining table in an effort to buy time by halting North Korea’s accelerating testing program. The country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, said on New Year’s Day that North Korea was in the “final stage” of preparation for the first launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the United States.

The secretary of state’s comments were the Trump administration’s first public hint at the options being considered, and they made clear that none involved a negotiated settlement or waiting for the North Korean government to collapse.

“The policy of strategic patience has ended,” Mr. Tillerson said, a reference to the term used by the Obama administration to describe a policy of waiting out the North Koreans, while gradually ratcheting up sanctions and covert action.

Trump’s budget cuts hit his base — rural voters
    MARCH 16, 2017

WASHINGTON — Some of the biggest losers in President Trump’s proposed budget are the rural communities that fueled his stunning White House victory.

Funding that keeps rural airports open, grants that help build rural water and sewer projects, and money for long-distance Amtrak lines that serve rural communities would all disappear under Trump’s budget blueprint released Thursday.

Trump also wants to kill the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps people, including seniors on fixed incomes and the working poor, to pay their heating bills. It’s a particularly prized resource in New England, with its brutal winters.

Also on the chopping block: funding for the Appalachian Regional Commission, which seeks to boost economic development in a region that strongly supported Trump. Into the dustbin, too, would go the US Chemical Safety Board, an agency that has open investigations in Mississippi, Florida, Texas, and Kansas, and last September wrapped up a probe of a West Virginia chemical spill that left more than 300,000 people without usable water for a time.

I can’t believe you have black people who believe that this man after all the racist incidents would do anything for black people.

COLIN KAEPERNICK SENTENCED TO NFL LIMBO FOR THE CRIME OF SPEAKING HIS MIND
    March 17, 2017

It’s more than a week into free agency and Colin Kaepernick is still unemployed. Remember, this is a quarterback who played in the Super Bowl only four years ago, yet now it appears he can’t get a look from teams. So I set out to discover, once and for all, what teams think of the 29-year-old former Niner.

“He can still play at a high level,” one AFC general manager said. “The problem is three things are happening with him.

“First, some teams genuinely believe that he can’t play. They think he’s shot. I’d put that number around 20 percent.

“Second, some teams fear the backlash from fans after getting him. They think there might be protests or [President Donald] Trump will tweet about the team. I’d say that number is around 10 percent. Then there’s another 10 percent that has a mix of those feelings.

“Third, the rest genuinely hate him and can’t stand what he did [kneeling for the national anthem]. They want nothing to do with him. They won’t move on. They think showing no interest is a form of punishment. I think some teams also want to use Kaepernick as a cautionary tale to stop other players in the future from doing what he did.”

When I spoke to a handful of executives at the combine a few weeks ago, one even called him “an embarrassment to football.”

For the moment, the interest in Kaepernick is slim, and that’s putting it kindly.

I wonder when a GOPer is gonna crack and tell the truth about these budget cuts. Over the years I’ve read some stuff from their world and they truly believe that they’re compassionate. This is some tough love that they’re giving America because the “Godly” way is:

    1. Churches should be doing all government social services, if the government stops the pews will fill back up

    2. Women shouldn’t be working anyway, if they behaved properly they would be at home (no afterschool programs needed) cooking regularly (no need for soup kitchens, meal-on;wheels and school lunch programs)

    3. White men who are genetically superior would rightfully be in charge and would instinctively know the right thing to do (or God would tell them like Solomon) so no government data needs to be collected.

    4. The world is for the White man to do as he pleases, so global warming or drilling anywhere is not an issue

This budget is love people! They’re just putting America back on track.

“The Black Guy Who Tips” podcast was arguing up and down why these HBCU presidents HAD to go hat in hand to Trump to get the money because we aren’t giving these institutions money. And while I understand where they were coming from, Trump is a WHOLE DIFFERENT KIND OF PRESIDENT than all the rest of them. You could go hat in hand to Bush or Reagan or Nixon or whoever and not be played like they were played by Trump. I wonder what TBGWT podcast thinks NOW that the HBCUs shuffled & jigged for Trump in the hope they would get some money but ended up getting stiffed?

This administration doesn’t like black people and don’t even know what an HBCU is or why they were formed so why were they expecting Trump to break them off some money?

All these HBCU presidents were on that “That nigga Obama ain’t do SHIT for black folks, this white man Trump gone break us off some money” tip and they got played. The only HBCU that’s going to end up getting any significant money will be Howard and that’s because of Omarosa.

    ———————–
US Officials Won’t Say Whether The White House Actually Apologized To Britain For GCHQ Wiretap Claims

On Friday, British news outlets were briefed that the US had apologized, but Trump administration officials have cast doubt on this.
    Mar. 17, 2017, at 8:41 a.m.

LONDON – The White House is under pressure to clarify whether it has issued an apology to the British government for claiming the UK’s GCHQ intelligence agency spied on Donald Trump for the Obama administration.

Less than 24 hours after press secretary Sean Spicer repeated the allegation from a White House podium, British government sources briefed news outlets on Friday morning that the US had apologized. The Telegraph, quoting intelligence sources, even reported the apology came direct from Spicer and National Security Adviser, General H R McMaster.

In an on-the-record statement, a Downing Street spokesperson said the UK government “made clear the allegations were ridiculous and received reassurances that they would not be repeated” following a discussion with US counterparts.

But US officials have been disputed whether the Trump administration had gone as far as an apology. One administration source told BuzzFeed News: “The UK demanded an apology, NSC worked overnight to try and smooth things over.”

The ambiguity over whether it was an apology puts pressure on Trump aides to clarify the exact nature of the conversation. Trump is legendarily opposed to apologizing.

The White House told reporters on Friday that British ambassador to Washington Kim Darroch and Sir Mark Lyall, the UK national security adviser, had expressed their concerns to Spicer and McMaster, who had explained that Spicer was simply pointing to public reports, not endorsing any specific story.

People don’t even THINK about stuff like this!! There are so many emergencies that do not make national news!
    ———————-
With E.P.A. Cuts, States Would Lose Help in Emergencies
    MARCH 17, 2017

WASHINGTON — Late one Friday night in 2014, Ohio’s environmental agency received word of a frightening test result from Toledo’s water supply: A toxic greenish substance had rendered the drinking water of half a million Toledo residents unsafe to drink.

“Immediately we reached out to the Environmental Protection Agency,” said Craig Butler, the director of Ohio’s environmental agency. “Because of the scale of the problem, and the technical knowledge required, we needed their expertise.”

State officials flew water samples from Toledo to an E.P.A. laboratory in Cincinnati, where staff scientists identified the substance as microcystin, a rare but toxic substance that is produced by algae blooms in water and causes liver damage in humans.

The resources to respond to those emergencies, along with much of the other state-level work performed by the agency, would be eliminated or sharply reduced by President Trump’s proposed budget for fiscal 2018, which cuts the E.P.A. by 31 percent, more than any other agency.

While the agency may be known for sweeping regulations to curb climate change, increase auto fuel efficiency or mandate smokestack controls, the agency’s bread and butter is more prosaic. The staff and scientists at its regional offices and laboratories across the country regularly respond to emergency calls from city and state officials: a December 2016 chemical leak from an asphalt plant into the water supply of Corpus Christi, Tex.; airborne drifts last summer in southern Missouri of dicamba, an herbicide that damages non-genetically modified crops; a 2014 fire at a perfume factory in Bridgeport, Conn., that spewed dangerous chemicals into the surrounding neighborhood.

Funds to respond to many of those calls would no longer be available under Mr. Trump’s budget. He proposed lowering the agency’s $8.1 billion budget to $5.7 billion, and cutting 3,200 jobs from the its staff of 15,000.

Four Republican governors come out against Obamacare repeal plan
    Detroit Free Press 11:45 a.m. ET March 17, 2017

WASHINGTON — Four Republican governors added their voices to the chorus of opposition to House Speaker Paul Ryan’s proposal to replace the Affordable Care Act, saying it fails to give them the flexibility or resources they need to adequately deal with the insurance needs of lower-income Americans.

Saying they had been “encouraged” by statements made by President Trump that he would work with the governors to help address the “diverse needs” of Medicaid recipients, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval said the bill, endorsed by Trump, “does not meet this test.”

    – —AARP to Alert 38 Million Members How Their Members of Congress Vote on Health Bill
Health care coverage and affordability are critical priorities.

    – – —AARP Executive Vice President Nancy LeaMond
released the following statement today in response to the pending vote on the House bill that would create an “Age Tax,” weaken Medicare’s solvency, put at risk seniors’ ability to live independently as they age, and give sweetheart deals to big drug and insurance companies. In a letter sent to all 435 members of the House of Representatives, AARP maintained its strong opposition to this harmful bill and urged each Representative to vote ‘No’ on the proposed legislation. AARP believes this legislation will have a significant negative impact on the health of millions of older Americans ages 50 to 64, as well as other vulnerable groups, including poor seniors and disabled children and adults.

“AARP recognizes the magnitude of the upcoming vote on this harmful legislation that creates an Age Tax, cuts the life of Medicare, and gives sweetheart deals to big drug and insurance companies while doing nothing to lower the cost of health care or prescriptions. We intend on letting all 38 million of our members know exactly how their Representative voted. Our members care deeply about their health care and have told us repeatedly that they want to know where their elected officials stand. We will communicate the results of the House vote to our members and the public through The Bulletin, a print publication that goes to all of our members, as well as through emails, social media, and other communications channels.

“This bill, if passed in its current form, will disproportionately hurt older adults between the ages of 50 and 64 by dramatically increasing insurance premiums to unaffordable rates. Allowing insurance companies to charge older adults an Age Tax 5 times or more than others for health insurance, and reducing tax credits to help pay for it, is quite simply unfair.

IS TRUMP TROLLING THE WHITE HOUSE PRESS CORPS?
At daily briefings, Sean Spicer calls on young journalists from far-right sites. The mainstream media sees them as an existential threat.
    MARCH 20, 2017 ISSUE

In normal times, White House press briefings make for boring television. Robert Gibbs, Jay Carney, and Josh Earnest, the three generic-looking white guys who served as successive press secretaries under President Barack Obama, could walk unmolested through the streets of most American cities. Only on rare occasions was a clip from one of their briefings—for example, a testy exchange between Carney and Jonathan Karl, of ABC News, debating the logistics of Obamacare enrollment—remarkable enough to make headlines.

President Trump seems to have no tolerance for boring television. His press secretary, Sean Spicer, now a recurring character on “Saturday Night Live,” is often tongue-tied, enraged, or both. Spicer’s briefings, broadcast live on c-span, are among the most highly rated programs on daytime TV, beating out “General Hospital” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.” On major networks, many hours are devoted to nightly exegeses of Spicer’s serial self-contradictions, and to Sunday-morning sermons about how he is imperilling the First Amendment. On YouTube, accounts with names such as Trump Mafia and Based Patriot repost Spicer’s briefings, and others post exultant compilations of the “spiciest” moments, overlaying his rebukes of reporters with images of flames and chili peppers.

The James S. Brady Press Briefing Room, in the West Wing, has seven rows of seven seats. The Associated Press, Reuters, and the biggest TV networks have reserved seats in the front row; blogs like Politico and Real Clear Politics are near the middle; BuzzFeed and the BBC are in the back. The seating chart is the purview of the White House Correspondents’ Association, an independent board of journalists who, with the sombre secrecy of a papal conclave, assess news organizations according to factors such as regularity of coverage and centrality to the national discourse.

There are also correspondents who might be called floaters—those who have White House credentials but no assigned seat. Some floaters work for outlets that are too new to have been included in the most recent seating chart; others work for outlets that are marginal or disreputable. When press briefings are half empty, floaters can find vacant seats. In the early days of the Trump Administration, when each day’s briefing is oversubscribed, floaters pack the aisles, angling for a spot visible from the podium. The paradigmatic example of a floater is Raghubir Goyal, an amiable, somewhat absent-minded man in his sixties. Goyal claims to represent the India Globe, a newspaper that, as far as anyone can tell, is defunct. Nevertheless, he has attended briefings since the Carter Administration, and has asked so many questions about Indo-American relations that his name has become a verb. “To Goyal”: to seek out a reporter who is likely to provide a friendly question, or a moment of comic relief. All press secretaries get cornered, and all have, on occasion, Goyaled their way out. But no one Goyals like Spicer.

Until recently, the more established White House correspondents have regarded floaters as a harmless distraction—the equivalent of letting a batboy sit in the dugout. Now they are starting to see the floaters as an existential threat. “It’s becoming a form of court-packing,” one White House correspondent told me. Outlets that have become newly visible under the Trump Administration include One America News Network, which was founded in 2013 as a right-wing alternative to Fox News; LifeZette, a Web tabloid founded in 2015 by Laura Ingraham, the radio commentator and Trump ally; Townhall, a conservative blog started by the Heritage Foundation; the Daily Caller, co-founded in 2010 by Tucker Carlson, now a Fox News host; and the enormously popular and openly pro-Trump Breitbart News Network. Most of the White House correspondents from these outlets are younger than thirty. “At best, they don’t know what they’re doing,” a radio correspondent told me. “At worst, you wonder whether someone is actually feeding them softball questions.” He added, “You can’t just have a parade of people asking, ‘When and how do you plan to make America great again?’ ”

Monietalk if you see this let me know what you think of Olavo de Carvalho? — Australia moving to China likewise Mexico…

“The Russian-Chinese influence has been growing more and more in Latin America. The U.S. Government has missed this because it still sees Russia and China as allies, in spite of the fact that they are the two largest weapons suppliers to terrorism around the world. One must remember that the Putin government’s foreign policy is today guided by the so-called ‘Eurasian’ strategy, invented by Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin, who proposes that Russia, China, and Islam ally with all the anti-American forces in Western Europe, Africa and Latin America, for the purpose of laying final siege to the United States. This strategy already has strong military support in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a kind of eastern version of NATO, which brings together Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.”

    • MonieTalks

China is definitely increasing its footprint in Latin America because of money, money, money. Russia is encouraging the alienation of the US by embracing Trump’s nationalism…but they too are banking are increasing their footprint for resources as well.

      http://www.bbc.com/news/world-33424532

The Asian giant’s influence here is growing fast – it has pledged to invest $250bn (£161bn) in Latin America in the next decade. But what will this money do for Latin America?
      Land of plenty
The Inter-American Development Bank says Latin America is the next global bread basket. With a third of the world’s fresh water resources and more than a quarter of its good quality farmland, this region has everything China needs.
China’s growth in the past decade and its insatiable appetite for commodities has seen resource-rich countries like Brazil prosper.
Latin America’s largest economy is now the world’s biggest exporter of foodstuffs like sugar cane, orange juice and soybean. Much of it is destined for Asia.

I think this makes it all very clear that the intent of the current regime is to hobble US but for what purpose?
The regime and Bernie deliberately took US out of contention in Asia so now its a one sided relationship for a number of our allies with china.
It seems elites and policy makers in the US don’t want to be beholden to any ethical or moral standard but rather be on the same playing field like Russia and china in terms of ethics, human rights or civil rights. In order to achieve that they seem to placate the majority with racism.
It seems in Latin America socialism has failed due to many forces but what is the long term effect of china influence? It will not be beneficial to them but rather Asia as the article notes, same thing with the continent of Africa.
In US– what is bannon’s goal with his aligning with the oligarchs other than destruction? Why are they okay with it?
