Friday Open Thread: African American Psychologists and Psychiatrists

Ruth Howard, PhD, was born on March 4, 1900, in Washington, D.C. Unknown to Reverend and Mrs. William James Howard, their eighth and youngest child Ruth would leave a lasting imprint in history. Dr. Howard became the first African American woman to earn a PhD in psychology, marking a significant milestone in American history. Prior to her completing her doctorate, Howard earned a degree in social work from Simmons College in Boston. Her dedication to helping families and children within her community was evident early on in her career. She started work as a social worker through the Cleveland Urban league and then worked with the Cleveland Child Welfare Agency.

Her work involved meeting representatives from schools and medical and child clinics, many of whom “didn’t understand or sympathized with cultural groups other than their own.  This was markedly true about Negroes for whom they had firmly fixed preconceived ideas…” (Howard, 1983, p.58).  Only the chief psychologist of the Cleveland Board of Education seemed to have some understanding of the needs of the black community.  This unnamed woman spurred Howard to pursue a career in psychology.

In 1934, she received her PhD in psychology and child development from the University of Minnesota. Her dissertation was the first of its kind, which studied the developmental history of 229 sets of triplets.

She received an internship at the Illinois Institute for Juvenile Research after receiving her doctorate and eventually began her own clinical psychology based private practice. From 1940-1964, Beckham co-directed the Center for Psychological Services along with her husband, Albert Sidney Beckham.

As Howard’s clinical practice grew, she also pursued postdoctoral studies at the University of Chicago where she studied projective techniques with Dr. Robert Havinghurst; client-centered therapy with Dr. Carl Rogers; reading therapy with Dr. Helen Robinson; and play therapy with Virginia Axline, who was just beginning to write about this new developing sub-field.

In 1944, Howard published her own study of play interviews with kindergartners and fourth-graders, focusing on how these play interviews could be used to detect war attitudes.

From 1964-1966, she worked at the McKinley Center for Retarded Children as a psychologist. Afterwards, she worked at Worthington and Hurst Psychological Consultants as a staff psychologist until 1968. After that, she held became a psychologist for the Chicago Board of Health until 1972.

Although Howard had her plate full at times, her commitment did not waiver as she served in numerous community and professional organizations. She was a volunteer for the Young Women’s Christian Association and helped organize the National Association of College Women. Some of Ruth Howard’s professional memberships included the American Psychological Association, the International Psychological Association, and the International Council of Women Psychologist.

A lot of defensive comments from the NCAA brass of late. Between the Northwestern unionization effort and Shabazz Napier putting them on blast on primetime national TV, I think they’re really shook.

    • rikyrah

Those kids at Northwestern have them shook, I tell ya.

These tweets went ALL IN. If this is a sampling of public sentiment the NCAA is in BIG trouble.

Dentures stolen from woman’s mouth in South Richmond
    RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH | Updated 21 hours ago

RICHMOND — Police were searching Wednesday for a man who robbed a woman of her dentures in South Richmond.

Police said the woman was not injured in the robbery, which occurred at 7:12 p.m. Tuesday in an apartment in the 1400 block of Bainbridge Street.

The dentures were in the woman’s mouth when they were forcibly removed by the man, who fled on foot, police said.

Police identified the suspect Wednesday as Linwood Harris, 63, and said he does not live with the victim but knows her.

      W-T-F????

    • Alma98

hahahahahahahahahahahahah!!! I’m on floor laughing my ass off right now. Sorry but this is hilarious!

    • Town

Yeah, we’ve been chuckling about that. He repossessed her dentures:

What happened was they lived in the same apartment complex. The lady had loose/bad teeth because she had been in a bad car accident. He told her she would look cute if she had some new teeth.

So he took her to Affordable Dentures to get some new teeth. But in return he wanted some sexytimes. She didn’t want to give him any sexytimes so he repossesed her teeth.

VCU School of Dentistry or somebody should step up and get this lady some new teeth.

      • Alma98

        Get outta here! LOL

      • qosine

        C’mon, VCU School of Dentistry,
        more teeth, please!

      • Daltex82

I know I shouldn’t be laughing but I am. When punanny for polident goes wrong LOL!!

      • Guns3000

If that was the agreement before he bought the teeth and she didn’t go through with it that’s not right.

        • Town

If he had said “Have sex with me and I’ll you some teeth” I’d agree (although she’d then be guilty of prostitution).

But I doubt seriously he said “Have sex with me and I’ll buy you some teeth.” He thought he was entitled to sex from her because he bought her some teeth.

How many times would she have to have sex with him to pay off the teeth? She might have had sex with him for the teeth previously but he thought he was entitled to have sex with her anytime he felt like it because he bought her some teeth.

Lesson to ladies: No man out here is buying you anything, including a Happy Meal, just to be “nice.” He wants something in return.

          • Aquagranny911

♥ Town! LMAO! There is no such thing as a “free lunch!”

    • Aquagranny911

I ♥ you Miranda for this laugh! I know I should not be laughing…poor woman…but I can’t help myself especially after Town’s share that this guy bought her teeth in hopes of an exchange for sex. You just got to love how desperate some dudes can get!

Home-grown right-wing terror bares its fangs in Kansas killings
    By David Horsey

How does a home-grown terrorist like Frazier Glenn Cross Jr. end up in the back of a police car shouting “Heil Hitler” after he has killed three people and shot up two Jewish community facilities in suburban Kansas City, Kan.?

Does he start with an ideological gateway drug, like a stream of shrill propaganda from the National Rifle Assn.? Does he move on through progressively harder stuff, from the pompous rants of Rush Limbaugh, to the paranoid fantasies of Glenn Beck and then to the seditious lunacy of Alex Jones? Does this get him hooked on anti-government delusions that take him deep into the philosophical meth, heroin and crack of right wing extremist websites and white supremacist militia groups?

Or do men like Cross just start crazy and get crazier?

    • jds09

Okay, this writer is tip toeing around the truth. Yet I go to give him credit for putting it out there. (The cartoon was great.) Here it is….

This is a facet of white supremacy. It has been a part of white American culture since before the foundation of this country. Today’s Republicans have released it from their basement, invited it to Sunday dinner and let it run around in the bright sunshine.

      It is not new.

  • JB20005

University of Texas AD (annual salary $1.4 million) who oversees a budget of $170 million, just doesn’t understand why college athletes would want to unionize.

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/10800648/texas-longhorns-ad-steve-patterson-counters-northwestern-push-players-union

The best part about these fat cats is they just don’t understand how bad they come off every time they open their mouths.

    • qosine

Yes, and they’ll keep talking until all
      the student athletes are unionized.

    • rikyrah

      they are ridiculous….come on, athletes.

    • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

If they had done a better job of compensation he wouldn’t have to ask this question. For years schools like this have tied these athletes to their sled and said pull us to the money. Now they’re stunned these same athletes are asking for a cut.

    • jds09

These guys don’t want the truth to come out. Back in the day, I dated a couple (only two) D 1 athletes (at different schools) and their practice schedules, team meetings, travel times and games where in direct opposition to studying. These guys worked a full-time job plus had huge amounts of stress. I doubt its changed over the years.

      • Aquagranny911

VERDAD! 20 years ago I did some tutoring for college athletes. It was not that they needed the tutoring as much as they needed strategies for time management to keep up with their classes while meeting the team demands.

My assessment then remains the same now…college athletes are terribly exploited. But for many, athletics was the only way some could ever afford to go to college.

Some colleges & universities have a lot to answer for how they have used and abused these young people to further their own agendas!

        My two pesos!

        • qosine

          SO true, AG.
“It was not that they needed the tutoring as much as they needed strategies for time management to keep up with their classes while meeting the team demands.”

    – - -Disney offers Obama minimum wage to Florida theme park staff
    – - – — – Walt Disney Co.has offered to raise starting pay at its Florida theme parks by 25 percent to $10 an hour over two years, almost matching the federal minimum wage sought by President Barack Obama.

Disney presented the proposal Wednesday to the Service Trades
Council, a consortium of six labor groups, the company and union
representatives said. They are scheduled to resume bargaining over a
    contract on May 28.

The unions, which represent more than 30,000 employees at Walt Disney World near Orlando, asked for at least $10.10 an hour, the amount congressional Democrats and Obama propose as a new U.S. minimum. Starting pay at the Florida parks is now $8.03 an hour, according to Burbank, Calif.-based Disney. That would reach the rate Disney is offering by July 2016.

“I’m very pleased,” Ed Chambers, president of the council, said in a telephone interview. “We’re well on our way to getting a deal done.”

    Hola POU.

Update on my Sis. Docs put her on blood thiners & on that colestrol stuff. They decided not to try reaming out her tubes or putting in a shunt because they feared that could be dangerous & cause more damage right now. She will also be on a strict diet.

We have her settled in the Rehab unit to address her speech problems & she is dragging one foot a bit. They will work on all that. Sis is frustrated & a bit depressed right now. She sleeps a lot but I know that is a good thing from when my daughter was in Rehab last year. Sleep is one way that the brain works to repair itself so I’m not worried about that.

Docs are optimistic about her recovery but I have worked counseling stroke patients in the past & I know that things will not be the same for her no matter her level of recovery. I am working on accepting that with gratitude to Dios that she is alive & reasonably well.

Peeps, I try not to cry all the time but it is so hard. Sis & I have been so close all our lives together no matter how far apart we lived.

Gracias to all of you for your prayers & good wishes for her. Keep praying, por favor.

Tuskegee Airman Harry Rock’ s contributions as a Tuskegee Airmen were verified only recently in 2012, after a chance meeting at a Sam’s Club public engagement on the Tuskegee Airmen; thus Rock never received his due honor of the Congressional Gold Medal. This is the unfortunate case for an unknown number of Tuskegee Airmen, however through the support of Congressman John Lewis and the efforts of Dekalb County SCLC, National Congress of Black Women and the Essien Agency, Rock will finally be honored with a proper Gold Medal Ceremony and Presentation.

She had a job interview and could not get anyone to watch her kids ages 2 yrs and 6 months , so she left them in the car, with window open and went inside to do her job interview.. Tara Culp-Ressler: Obamacare Enrollment Crushes Goal

President Obama announced on Thursday that 8 million people have signed up for plans through Obamacare’s new insurance exchanges. Although March 31 was originally the final deadline to enroll in Obamacare, administration officials extended the open enrollment period until April 15 to accommodate the people who may have struggled to complete their applications due to technological issues. Just over two weeks ago, the administration announced that Obamacare enrollment had reached 7.1 million — surpassing expectations after HealthCare.gov’s rocky rollout in October. Polling from Gallup released this week found that Obamacare may be having an even bigger impact on the uninsurance rate than initially expected, suggesting that about 12 million previously uninsured Americans have gained coverage since the fall.

That places the uninsurance rate at its lowest point since 2008. According to Gallup’s estimations, about half of the Americans who have gained insurance for the first time this year say they got their coverage through Obamacare’s marketplaces. Other people gaining coverage could have gotten it through the expansion of the Medicaid program, or by signing up directly with an insurer. And despite concerns that Obamacare wouldn’t be able to recover from HealthCare.gov’s disastrous rollout, several major insurers say they’re optimistic about the law, and eager to continue offering plans on the new marketplaces during the next open enrollment period. Insurance companies like UnitedHealth Group, Kaiser Permanente, Molina Healthcare, and Wellmark are interested in maintaining their presences on the state-level exchanges, and some are considering expanding

    Obamacare Signups Hit 8 Million
And both young and old are on board

    BY JONATHAN COHN

President Obama on Thursday announced the final numbers for the Affordable Care Act’s open enrollment period.

Eight million people have signed up for private insurance plans through the new federal and state marketplaces. And within the federal marketplaces, 28 percent of enrollees are ages 18 to 34.

This is good news—very, very good news.

Remember, the Congressional Budget Office originally predicted that 7 million people would get insurance through the marketplaces in 2014, with more joining in future years. After the early problems with the federal and some state websites, CBO revised its projection and said just 6 million would get coverage this way. The estimates were not precise and enrollment anywhere in that range would signal that the new system is working. Clearly it is.

And while not everybody who signs up for a plan pays the premiums, anecdotal reports suggest that 80 to 85 percent have so far. At worst, then, enrollment would be around 6.4 million. It will likely end up higher than that, particularly as insurers track down the people who are late on their initial payments.

Obamacare succeeded for one simple reason: it’s horrible to be uninsured

Updated by Sarah Kliff on April 17, 2014, 4:26 p.m. ET

There’s a very simple reason that Obamacare hit 8 million sign-ups: Being uninsured is horrible.

But the political conversation over Obamacare was driven almost entirely by people who had, and knew they would be able to keep, their health insurance. It was filled with a lot of assumptions, theories, and speculations about what people who didn’t have good insurance, or any insurance, would do. And after Obamacare’s disastrous launch, the theory took hold that these people wouldn’t find this untested program worth the trouble. It was the permanently insured speculating about the uninsured and the barely insured – and, unsurprisingly, they got it wrong

Back in December, when the web site’s woes were fresh in everyone’s mind, I made a prediction that sounded strange even to me: Obamacare might still hit its 7 million enrollees. The reason I made that prediction was I’d been talking to the uninsured who’d been spending hours or days or weeks trying to get through the web site. They were frustrated and they were angry. But not one of them had given up.

I asked pollsters Mike Perry and Tresa Undem, who specialized in surveying the uninsured, whether they had found anyone who’d been deterred by the unusable web site and overloaded call centers. Not even one person, they said. The persistence was amazing.

It was hard to sign up for Obamacare. But what too many insured pundits forgot is it’s much worse to be uninsured, or underinsured. And that’s true, too, for the people who saw their plans canceled by Obamacare and then needed to decide whether to sign up for a new one.

    When obstruction meets pragmatism

Those posters highlight just a few facts about the success of Obamacare. You can find a lot more here.

All of that creates a pretty big dilemma for Republicans who – from day one of the debate about health care reform – have chosen to simply obstruct anything President Obama and the Democrats tried to do. As David Frum told them 4 years ago, by refusing to even participate in the discussion, they were buying into creating their own Waterloo.

No illusions please: This bill will not be repealed. Even if Republicans scored a 1994 style landslide in November, how many votes could we muster to re-open the “doughnut hole” and charge seniors more for prescription drugs? How many votes to re-allow insurers to rescind policies when they discover a pre-existing condition? How many votes to banish 25 year olds from their parents’ insurance coverage? And even if the votes were there – would President Obama sign such a repeal?

We followed the most radical voices in the party and the movement, and they led us to abject and irreversible defeat.

    http://immasmartypants.blogspot.com/2014/04/when-obstruction-meets-pragmatism.html

    • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

Frum was right on the money with that prediction. Republicans could have done what they always did in the past: Jump out front and claim the whole thing was their idea. Now they are stuck and if Democrats play this right could take back the House in a big way while expanding their majority in the Senate.

    What Eight Million Means
    April 17, 2014, 5:17 pm

Sorry about blog silence — real life intruded, plus I did have to write a column. But I shouldn’t let the day pass without mentioning the latest big Obamacare news. Final enrollment for 2014, we now know, will be more than 8 million. The age mix has also improved, with more young people signing up at the end; as Jonathan Cohn points out in the linked article, the age mix in Obamacare’s first year is now just about identical to the age mix in Romneycare’s first year. Goodbye, death spiral.

How did enrollment manage to surge so impressively despite the initial debacle of healthcare.gov? Obviously they fixed the website; but the broader issue, as Sarah Kliff rightly points out, is that being uninsured is truly terrible. Uninsured Americans really, really wanted coverage, and they weren’t ready to give up.

Kliff doesn’t make this point too explicitly, but this diagnosis has another crucial implication: the benefits of Obamacare, for all its imperfections, are immense. Millions of people who lived extremely anxious lives now have far more security than before. Compared with those benefits, the complaints of some already insured people that they have less choice of doctors than before, or that they’re no longer allowed to retain minimalist plans, look like whining. (And of course not one of the more serious-sounding stories about soaring premiums and all that has held up under scrutiny.)

    – –Report: NBA considering proposal to extend age limit
    – - – -The one-and-dones of college basketball could soon be the ‘three-and dones,’ according to a report.

Sporting News NBA writer Sean Deveney reports the league is considering a proposal to raise the age limit from one year after high school graduation to three. That means there would be no Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker or Joel Embiid in this year’s draft.

A key component to extending the current age limit is the NBA’s Developmental or D-League. Sources tell Deveney the league could raise salaries in order to attract more quality young players. A possible scenario could see players skipping college outright to hone their games in the D-League.

No solid proposal is on the table, partially because the NBA Players
Association has yet to name an Executive Director replacement for Billy Hunter. The NBPA recently tapped Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson to lead the search.

I don’t see that way. The league is 90 to 95% Black and they will kick out the money. This proposal has been kicking around for years. I don’t really see it as all that bad.

      • qosine

What about skipping college, though, Woody? Am I
        reading that right?

As athletes, they are a brand. It seems majoring in business, finance, psychology, economics, law, and marketing would be good areas to make a living, raise a family, and protect their own interests.

So many grifters leech on waiting to cash in and bleed them dry with “investment opportunities.”

        • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

I think you are. My thing is a lot of these guys are not ready for this league. A LeBron or a Kobe doesn’t come along all that often. So many others come into the NBA and get eaten alive. I’d like to see the NBA push more kids to those areas you mentioned. Staying in school is your best move is a phony slogan given the league’s tendency to pluck them out of grade school if they could.

They bait these kids into leaving school early and then reality sets in when they discover most of them are not good enough to play in the NBA and never will be no matter how much time they spend in the D-League and when that fails they have nothing to fall back on.

Now I don’t blame these young men for dreaming big and going for it. They deserve a lot of credit but the reality is they have to cover themselves and that’s up to the community and culture they come from to drill that into them and for these young men to accept that possibility.

I never understood why anyone, I mean anyone, underestimated
President Obama’s determination to enact an ACA. When I first
read his book in 08 about
    1) his mother’s phone calls to insurers while she was dying of cancer;
    2) Sasha’s meningitis and how “my world narrowed to a single point” ‘I wasn’t interested in anything or anyone outside the four walls of that room – not my work, not my schedule, not my future.’
I remember countering health professionals with this, who said PBO was “a nice guy” who “couldn’t get ACA passed.”

I knew that he would put his formidable skills as a constitutional lawyer (to pass constitutional review) and politician (to move the legislation w/Reid and Pelosi) and as president (to sign with a Dem majority).

Obamacare is here to stay. Smart Dems will showcase what

I have a story about those JW’s always knocking on doors. Many years ago we had a friend who was a very observant Jewish woman. Sweet lady, she had one of those things by her door…mezuza(?) I think it is called that some Jewish people put out in both pride & sacredness for blessing on their faith & culture.

This poor woman was harassed by those Jehovah Witness people almost on a weekly basis. One cold November day, she had had enough when they kneeled on her doorstep to “pray for her” in loud voices.

She got a dish pan of ice water & poured it all over them from a window above. They left & never came back to bother her again!
