Friday Open Thread: African-American Speakers at the DNC

HAPPY FRIDAY PRAGOBOTS!

We conclude our look at past African American speakers at the Democratic National Convention with….

REV. AL SHARPTON

2004 Democratic National Convention
July 28, 2004 – Boston, MA

From NPR:

Rev. Al Sharpton energized the audience at the 2004 Democratic Convention with his response to questions asked of African-American voters by President Bush at last week’s National Urban League convention.

At that meeting, Bush asked his audience if they were being taken for granted by the Democratic Party, and urged them to consider the benefits of voting Republican. Sharpton, invoking the style of an open letter to the president, said, “Read my lips, ‘Our vote is not for sale.'”

With his speech extending far past his allotted seven minutes, Sharpton roused the FleetCenter crowd with a nearly 20-minute discussion of civil rights, the Iraq war and Bush’s policies.

The remarks represent the first major break from the carefully crafted schedule of the Democratic Convention, which has seen speakers conform to party expectations of amity — and brevity — as they echoed themes in Kerry’s campaign platform.

Speaking later Wednesday were Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Gen. John Shalikashvili, and the vice presidential nominee, Sen. John Edwards.

Job growth slows sharply in August
    By Greg Robb

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Job growth slowed sharply in August, the Labor Department said Friday. Total nonfarm payrolls increased by 96,000, lower than the 125,000 gain expected by Wall Street economists. Adding to the sense of weakness, job growth in the past two months were revised down by 41,000. The unemployment rate declined to 8.1% in August from 8.3% in the previous month but the drop was due to a smaller labor force. Economists forecast the unemployment rate to hold steady at 8.3%. Average hourly earnings were flat at $23.52. Earnings are up 1.7% in the past year. The average workweek was unchanged at 34.3 hours.

‘The clearest choice of any time in a generation’

    By Steve Benen
    Fri Sep 7, 2012 8:00 AM EDT.

When President Obama is set to deliver a major speech for a national audience, he faces the unfortunate hurdle of high expectations. Americans have come to expect every speech to soar with inspirational rhetoric, leaving supporters — and maybe even a few detractors — with goose bumps.

By this standard, I’ve seen many suggest Obama’s convention address fell short last night, because the speech didn’t manage to levitate him, his audience, and the arena. But what I saw was something else — this Obama, compared to the one from four years ago, is a little older, a little grayer, and a little wiser. He’s now less lofty and more grounded, less youthful and more mature.

In Charlotte last night, we didn’t see a candidate; we saw a president.

One of the keys to the speech was establishing the presidential campaign as a race of wildly different visions. For much of the year, the Republicans’ goal was to simply make 2012 a referendum on the incumbent — if you’re not satisfied with the status quo, vote for the challenger, no matter who he is or what he’s offering.

Obama sought to put that to rest once and for all — he used the word “choice” or “choose” literally 20 times — telling the audience the truth: “[W]hen all is said and done, when you pick up that ballot to vote, you will face the clearest choice of any time in a generation. Over the next few years, big decisions will be made in Washington, on jobs, the economy; taxes and deficits; energy, education; war and peace, decisions that will have a huge impact on our lives and our children’s lives for decades to come. And on every issue, the choice you face won’t be just between two candidates or two parties. It will be a choice between two different paths for America.”

And the Job Numbers Support Group at another blog is in session. My sister attends an Alzheimer’s Support Group (Mom not dxed with it, just St memory impairment, but sister wants to attend) I have run support groups for adults with disabilities, I considered, but rejected a CA support group…but THIS?!! Let the Bullies Whine

    by BooMan
Fri Sep 7th, 2012 at 07:58:47 AM EST

I’d like to second this, from Bob Cesca:

You know who shouldn’t be lecturing the Democrats about civility? The people who gave us swift-boating, the Southern Strategy, the outing of Valerie Plame, Birthers, Reverend Wright videos around the clock, “Obama pals around with domestic terrorists,” the exploitation of 9/11, comparing a triple amputee Vietnam veteran to Saddam Hussein, the booing of a gay soldier, and the party that sported Purple Heart band-aids at the 2004 convention to mock another decorated Vietnam veteran, John Kerry, who was wounded in combat. And no one on the floor of the Democratic convention hurled peanuts at an African American camerawomen, shouting, “This is how we feed the animals.”

What you are seeing this morning is how bullies react when they are confronted.

    DemCon III

Oh geez I loved the reference to Roosevelt. There couldn’t be a more fitting comparison. Clinton introduced this theme last night; I think there’s gold in it. Rebuilding from the pit of the Great Depression was no unified picnic, as many Americans seem to otherwise misremember it, but a certain romance has emerged around it which happens to be politically priceless.

These reminders of accomplishments are essential: corrections of the missed “hope and change” mantra from the Romney-Ryan-Palinites. And the corrections start with a refresher course on the horrors of neoconservatism–and a wonderful line: Romney is “new” to foreign policy.
    …………………………

When a president of the United States must remind the electorate of a thing called “citizenship,” well, see above. It’s simply downright bizarre that though many contemporary American historians frame their analyses around the founding concept of “republicanism,” the eponymous political party hasn’t a clue as to its meaning or importance.

Obama’s call to reject “cynicism” is both Rooseveltian and “republican”–a brilliant maneuver that necessarily calls for participation in the process. This is a theme as old as the ancient Greeks, yet it never seems to entirely sink in.

Obama’s speech about morality and America’s future
    By Greg Sargent

On Tuesday, Michelle Obama talked about who Barack Obama is and where he came from. On Wednesday, Bill Clinton talked about where the country and the economy have been and how we struggled to get to where we are now. As Chuck Schumer put it earlier today, those two performances teed up Barack Obama to devote tonight’s speech to talking about the future.

In a bit of a surprise, Obama’s speech — which had little in the way of soaring rhetoric and stuck to a direct and sometimes pleading tone — spent little time defending his economic record. That task has already been handled ably by Clinton, and Obama wanted the focus to be on a far broader range of issues. The centerpiece of the speech was the idea of “citizenship” and shared responsibility — a gamble that voters will not cast their vote on the current economy alone but on which candidate is offering a more compelling moral vision of America’s true identity and future.

The “choice” refrain was presented through the prism of specific issues. You can choose between more tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas or rewarding companies that create jobs in America. You can choose between policies that are raising fuel standards to maximize efficiency and are increasing the use of renewable energy, or you can choose a course that “reverses this progress.” You can choose between more investment in education or more crowded classrooms for kids, students dropping out of college, and a shortage of properly skilled workers.

Joe Biden: America is not a corporation
    By Greg Sargent
I thought Joe Biden’s speech got off to a slow start. During the sections where Biden attested to the character he saw present in Barack Obama’s decision-making from his vantage point inside the White House, he said too little about what, specifically, that decision-making produced for the American people.

However, he did make a good case on behalf of Obama’s character during his discussion of the auto-bailout, and in the process, he took direct aim at Mitt Romney’s whole rational for running for president:

When I look back on the president’s decision, I think of another son of an automobile man — Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney grew up in Detroit….his dad ran an entire automobile company, American Motors. In spite of that, he was willing to let Detroit go bankrupt. I don’t think he’s a bad guy. I’m sure he grew up loving cars as much as I did. I don’t think he understood that saving the automobile worker — saving the industry — what it meant to all of America.
I think he saw it the Bain way. I think he saw it in terms of balance sheets and write-offs. Folks, the Bain way may bring your firm the highest profits. But it’s not the way to lead our country from the highest office.
When things hung in the balance, the president understood this was about a lot more than the automobile industry. This was about restoring America’s pride. He understood in his gut what it would mean to leave a million people without hope or work if he didn’t act.

Sepia – – – -MR. PRESIDENT had sooo many GR8 STATEMENTS! THIS was ENCOURAGING: – –

    – – —Obama accepts nomination, promises better days at DNC: ‘My fellow citizens — you were the change’

    – – — - Barack Obama urged wavering supporters not to give up on their dreams of change — or on him — as he accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in what promises to be a tough race against Republican Mitt Romney.

Obama used his nationally televised speech closing out the Democratic National Convention to try to revive the excitement that powered his first run for the presidency.

With just two months before election day, Obama needs to win over undecided voters, especially those who had been swayed by his inspiring message of hope and change in 2008, but now feel disillusioned after years of economic weakness and persistent political bickering.

“The election four years ago wasn’t about me. It was about you,” he said. “My fellow citizens— you were the change.”

He said the American people were the ones responsible for accomplishments on his watch, such as overhauling health care, changing immigration policies and ending the ban in gays in the military.

If they turned away now, he warned, “you buy into the cynicism that the change we fought for isn’t possible. ” Change, he said, “will not happen.”

    – – – –Republicans Cry About Lack of “Civility” at Dem Convention — —

    — — -Predictably, the Romney campaign and its apparatchiks at Fox News accused the Democrats of lacking “civility” during the first day of their convention. RNC chairman Reince Priebus called the Democrats “classless” for showing a 1994 video of Ted Kennedy debating (and embarrassing) a decidedly more liberal Mitt Romney.

    Boo-hoo.

– – —SNIP — –

    – –So the contrast between a strong Democratic Party and a flaky, unstable, flip-floppy Republican Party has prompted the GOP to spend the week whining and pooping its big boy pants about how the Democrats are being so mean. For a Republican Party dependent upon lies and intellectual dishonesty, the truth really hurts.

Sarah Palin Feigns Surprise at John Kerry, Says Predictably Stupid Thing

It seems like someone is a little jealous at all the attention Paul Ryan has been getting. Former vice presidential candidate and forever moron Sarah Palin took issue with John Kerry’s speech tonight, particularly the part where he made a joke about Palin being able to see Russia from Alaska.

In an interview with Fox Business News (and how pathetic it wasn’t even on regular old awful Fox News), Palin spewed out this chunk of predictable gibberish:

The three words that lit the white supremacists’ fuse…

      “I’m the President.”

They (both liberal and conservative) cannot stand that simple truth. Reading the pundits this morning, they consistently used the words, “pleaded”, “urged”, “humble”…

PBO is not asking for their permission, seeking their advice or waiting for their blessings.

    – – –5 Brilliant Things Barack Obama Did In His Convention Speech – —

    – — –President Obama did a lot of good things in his convention speech, but here are the five brilliant points in his acceptance speech.

1). The Republican Obsession With Tax Cuts

What Obama Said, “Now, our friends at the Republican convention were more than happy to talk about everything they think is wrong with America, but they didn’t have much to say about how they’d make it right. They want your vote, but they don’t want you to know their plan. And that’s because all they have to offer is the same prescription they’ve had for the last thirty years: “Have a surplus? Try a tax cut.” “Deficit too high? Try another.” “Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations, and call us in the morning!””

Why it was Brilliant: The President could have made some dry argument about tax cuts, but instead he made a joke that was completely true. No matter what the problem is, the first Republican and sometimes only Republican solution proposed is tax cuts. Obama’s tax cut humor was not only true. It is going to be replayed and repeated for the next 24 hours on every newscast.

Everytime I think back to that moment last night when FLOTUS cut a look and said something to Miss Sasha…just brings a tear to my eye. LMAO I love them! Anyone with siblings KNOW that Malia was trying to reign lil sis in. It was so obvious that she was trying before FLOTUS had to straight go to “YOU BEST TO NOT TEST ME TONIGHT” mode. Oh, it brings a smile to my heart to know that FLOTUS was like “bump a convention with 60 mil watching, I’ll shut ALL this down and snatch you up in here”…and Miss Sasha calmed down quick!

They my family, LOL, they are FAMILY.

Yep, I was very familiar with that look FLOTUS had. As a kid I always had to try to sass and have the last word with my Mom, and it was always my oldest sister trying to save me from myself. Sometimes it worked better than others.

And you just know that FLOTUS gave Sasha what for when they got back to the hotel like “don’t think I forgot about your little act tonight, missy!”

To be honest, I am quite annoyed by the jobs report. For the last 2 days, it has been reported that atleast 200,000 jobs were believed to have been created, thus the uptick in the market. This report was supposedly from ADP. So, who the hell is making these false claims? And why does it take a month, two months, to get an actual figure on past months’ performance? I work in accounting but I am not an economic expert. Anyone here have a clearer take? It just seems we are being taken on a roller coaster ride by inept (or dishonest) analysis, and it does indeed weigh on PBO’s approvals. I can hope, atleast, that hiring picks up this month onward, as I’ve realized I had never gotten a new job during the summer. and I’ve had many.

    • cosine

You’re right, edp4bho. ADP, a payroll HR outfit, comes out with these glowing reports (see below), followed by a more realistic Bureau of Labor employment report. I never listen to ADP anymore. Maybe a way for ADP to drum up business?

“The ADP National Employment Report®, sponsored by ADP®, was developed and is maintained by Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC. It is a measure of employment derived from an anonymous subset of roughly 500,000 U.S. business clients. During 2011, this subset averaged about 344,000 U.S. business clients and represented over 21 million U.S. employees working in all private industrial sectors.

Both reports are surveys, and imprecise. The national media is a pack of hyenas and of course are going to declare the end of the world if whatever [insert shifting goalpost here] isn’t achieved. The story is that the economy is continuing to grow and unemployment, continuing to decline. Far and away better than where we were 4 years ago looking at an abyss and possible Depression rather than a recovery.

If they are anything like the seeming sentiment I experience here at work, then I say yes, you are correct. Let’s face it, money grubbers are mainly white and rethug. In fact, rethugs worship money. We all know of black Rs whose main concern is money. Never have I heard of any speaking on social issues to benefit the many, instead of only the few. This is why I have zero respect for that party- long ago, and nowadays, I vehemently resent them. They are never Christ-like.

  • lamh35

The goal post moving this morning is fascinating. First Romney needed to have a good June, after the primary was over. He didnt, contrary to CW, Obama cleaned his clock. Then Romney needed a better summer leading up to the convention. Aside from Paul Ryan pick, Romney had a bad summer. Then Romney needed to have a great convention and therefore increase his fortunes, but he didn’t the convention was a disaster, first cause of Isaac, then Ann Romney’s overrated speech, then all the speakers who talked more about themselves that about the nominee, then the drab stagecraft, then Paul Ryan’s lying acceptance speech, then Romney lukewarm speech that was a big ole whiff of nothing, with no mention of the war or the troops, oh and less we forget…Clint Eastwood! Now he needs to over perform in the debates. Which is a lot of pressure & Mitt doesn’t seem to do well under pressure. Also, personally, I think more people are underestimating Obama’s debating skills by comparing them to 2008, & they are overestimating Romney’s debating skills by comparing them to that clown show that was the GOP primaries.

NC man arrested for threatening to kill Obama, on Twitter

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A North Carolina man was arrested Wednesday and accused of threatening to kill President Barack Obama in a series of Twitter messages, including one saying, “The Secret Service is gonna be defenseless once I aim the Assault Rifle at Barack’s Forehead.”

Donte Jamar Sims, 21, had an initial court appearance in Charlotte on Thursday and remains in custody.

According to a criminal complaint, Sims sent five Twitter messages Monday morning threatening the president. “Imma hit president Obama with that Lee Harvey Oswald swag,” said one tweet. “Well IMA Assassinate president Obama this evening, ” said another message. President Obama did not arrive in town until two days later.

…“Sims stated that he published the statements because he hated President Obama,” the agent wrote in the affidavit. “Sims asserted that he was high on marijuana when he made the threats but that he understood what he was doing and that it was wrong.”

According to the court document, the agent then arrested Sims on several outstanding warrants. The officer said Sims later waived his Miranda rights and said his demeanor changed. “He asserted that he was sorry he sent the messages threatening to kill the president of the United States and provided me with a written apology,” wrote the agent.

Sick ass little puppy. If I were his momma, I’d have them throw the whole book at him. Such a disgrace to see AAs hate a black man like this. It’s been discussed this week how some young blacks are apathetic or even hostile towards PBO. Michael Baisden was able to convince a 20 yr old to atleast consider voting- she says her vote won’t change anything, yet she supports PBO. Sometimes I think a lot of them are drugged up on something.

      • Tafr

WTF is wrong with them? Why should any young black person hate this president? I just do not understand it. I have gotten into it with some of them online. You know the ones that like to play pro-black power but when you get down to the nitty gritty they are all talk. Nothing but emprogs that happen to be black. All this talk about both parties are the same and what not. I just do not understand it.

    – – – – -President Obama had some big shoes to fill when he took the stage at the Democratic National Convention tonight—he had to follow his own 2004 and 2008 convention speeches.

The consensus? “What a home run that was,” said Chris Matthews after the speech Thursday night.

“The profound thing he accomplished tonight was to turn the tables on those who thought the incumbency would be a problem and [that] the challenger would have it easy,” Matthews said.

The Hardball host noted that the strongest, perhaps most well-received statement was actually a simple one: “I am the president,” and you’re not.

Ed Schultz and the Rev. Al Sharpton observed that Obama did an admirable job of reclaiming his hope and change catchphrase, ideals that have long been ridiculed by Republicans. He “elevated hope and change, he didn’t give it up,” said Sharpton. “I think Barack Obama won the election tonight.”

They know it. It’s why there’s all of this concern trolling, drama, hooping and hollerin today. I would have LOVED numbers showing growth of twice the report’s numbes, as would most of the country. But modest jobs added and a reduction in unemployment can’t be spun into Armegeddon. Simply an indication that PBO has no legislative partners with regards to jobs in the 112th Congress.

Barack Obama won the night, and as the President indeed noted: so did the Democratic base (whose wild exuberance at that convention, from the moment they stepped off planes, showed the comments of the PL about a “depressed” base to be DIRTY LIE). We just have to double down on this President and his wonderfully articulated vision.

When the Teahadists, GOP, its stenographers, and uninformed individuals attempt to dampen the success of the Democratic convention by collectively commiserating over the jobs report, we should remind them of THIS:

Unhappy Anniversary: Republicans Have Blocked The American Jobs Act For One Year

On September 8, 2011 — one year ago tomorrow — President Obama laid out a series of policy proposals known collectively as the American Jobs Act. The plan included stimulus spending in the form of immediate infrastructure investments, tax credits for working Americans and employers to encourage consumer spending and job growth, and efforts to shore up state and local budgets to prevent further layoffs of teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other public safety officials.

The American Jobs Act never became law, however, because Republicans opposed it from the start, blasting it as another form of “failed stimulus” that wouldn’t help the economy. (They ignored the fact that the first “failed stimulus,” the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, wasn’t a failure at all.) One month later, the GOP blocked the bill in the Senate, preventing the creation of more than a million jobs and the added growth that multiple economists predicted would occur if the bill passed:[....]

Thank you for this. This needs to be thrown in the face of any and every one who wants to pop off about jobs numbers. This President has a jobs bill that the GOP has obstructed and sat on for no other reason than to deny this President a win. As Rikyrah says, the GOP has committed economic TREASON against this country and I’ll be damned if they get rewarded for it.

And much to my delight, he mentioned it in his speech earlier in New Hampshire. I do believe this will be part of his arsenal in rallies leading up to the election. DNC seriously needs to make this a major part of its platform..” We are where we are because of obstructionism.”.

Two sentences by Obama that Romney won’t dare utter

    Two short sentences. That’s all.

Take the hundreds of thousands of words uttered at the Democratic National Convention this week, weigh them against the hundreds of thousands of words used by Republican speakers a week earlier in Tampa, and the critical difference can be boiled down to two seemingly bland sentences.

It’s not about policy, it’s not about values. It’s about something even more fundamental:

Florida tuition policy is ruled unconstitutional

Students at Florida’s public colleges and universities cannot be charged higher out-of-state tuition simply because their parents are in the U.S. illegally, a federal judge ruled. U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore determined the policy violates the equal protection clause of the Constitution by forcing those students to unfairly pay three times as much as Florida residents. Children born in this country are citizens whether or not their parents have legal immigration status.[....]

    More hope and change

Are Americans ready to absorb a speech like the one President Obama gave tonight? Maybe, if we’re tired of hearing that there are simple solutions to our problems. If we have figured out that we can’t have our cake and eat it at the same time. If we have finally realized that no one man can fix everything for us.[....]

Do people want to hear that? I hope we’re grown-up enough to be ready for that message, because it is powerful, and it happens to be true. The president’s speech outlined the policy differences between the two parties’ programs, but anyone who has been paying attention knows all that already. What President Obama had to do was remind us that in a democracy, we are the hope and we are the change. It’s not enough to vote for him and expect him to solve everything. And it certainly isn’t going to work to vote for the other guys and let them take us back in the other direction. No, what citizenship requires is that we all take the responsibility to come together and offer solutions.[....]

That’s all the president is asking from us right now. Just tell everyone you know to get out and vote.

If this is truly their strategy, then this campaign is dumber than a box of rocks (and I’m sorry for the insult to the rocks in this analogy)

    A Month of Mistakes?

Matthew Dowd commented on Mitt Romney’s campaign strategy going forward for the month of September:

“September is a month of mistakes. I think what they’re trying to do is force the president to make a few mistakes in September, release a bunch of ads, make him respond to it — and I think that’s what you can expect in September.”

Um…ok. So the Romney campaign is gonna wait for the “No Drama Obama” campaign to make a series of mistakes and that’s a strategy??? Obama making a series of mistakes…oh like Mittens series of blunders on his European tour? Really? This is a Presidential campaign right, not amateur night at the Apollo, right

If I was Repub, I’d be pissed. I’m not psychic, but my gut tells me they gonna be waiting a long time for those series of mistakes to come.

    • Miranda

      They stoopid.

The best thing about the Plouffe-Axelrod strategy is that all Mitt has is September to not fuck up his campaign anymore than he already has. Because in October..every single week is a debate – a live debate that 60 million people will watch and will dwarf any ad that can possibly be created EVER. The summer strategy of killing Mitt worked to perfection, ending with a triumphant strong Dem convention. All Mitt has is one month to at least not shoot himself in the face like Yosemite Sam – trip up PBO? not gonna happen. The best Mitt can hope for is to at least get through the next 30 days without insulting people to their face at one of his fake rallies.

      • MsKitty

And let’s not forget the wild card of the tax returns. I still believe that they’re sitting on some explosive intel at the Prudential Building, just waiting for the perfect moment…

So sick of those dayum clintonistas, especially rendell. This joker was on tweety’s show with his billary should run in 2016 rhetoric.Tweety mentioned that if you cross the clintons they will make you pay. Case in point the election of the two candidates in PA. Clinton backed the one who supported him in 2008 and Obama supported candidate who supported him in 2008. clinton guy won and tweety basically said it was payback cause the other one crossed the clintons. rendell had the BIGGEST smirk on his face and nodded yes.
Point of this post is why the HELL does clinton crew think that the AA will automatically support them in 2016 when they didn’t in 2008? Especially if Joe “Ride or Die” Biden decides to run. Do they SERIOUSLY think that because he spoke at dnc that Obama OWES him something? I hasve two words for them…. SOUTH CAROLINA!

Did Rendell say his favorite phrase “white working class voters” Rendell is not fooling anyone with that nonsense. We all know he has little to no respect for the president because the president is a black man. President Obama has brought out all these snakes on the right and the left.

Naw we will not forget about South Carolina. Someone asked me the other day if I would ever let it go and I said hell NO. It was not only South Carolina that entire campaign was a nasty race baiting mess. The Clintons lost all my respect and when they went there. I know Clinton gave a damn good speech but he owed the country that. As an elder of the party he did what was expected of him.

Obama, Clinton, and future presidential rankings

The sublime irony of today’s prevailing discussions of President Obama’s “rescue”–just in the nick of time–by President Clinton is an obvious one, perhaps too obvious to qualify as true “irony,” but which I’ll qualify anyway. And the irony is this: In roughly 10 years, Obama, I would wager, will be ranked by presidential historians as “near great,” while Clinton will retain his ranking of “average.” In 50 years, Obama well may achieve “great” status, joining the likes of Franklin Roosevelt; Clinton, however, will remain average, as average as Taft.

Some of Obama’s “greatness” will emerge from the deliberate and determined: healthcare reform, for example, was, until Obama, a mere presidential aspiration for a century–now it’s the groundwork for achieving true universal coverage and a vital overhaul of America’s insanely expensive healthcare system.[....]Obama’s deliverance of the auto industry or pulling us from the brink of another Great Depression will settle in the historical mind only over time, lots of time.

Meanwhile, Clinton’s place in presidential history is essentially fixed. Yes, he balanced the budget and oversaw a booming economy. So did Calvin Coolidge.[....]

MEDIA ALERT: MR. PRESIDENT is in NEW HAMPSHIRE – -NOW! — -

  • GN

This morning, Van Jones made comments to the effect of the DNC energizing a depressed base. He still don’t get it. Netroots Nation is not the base. DailyKos is not the base. Salon is not the base. The Atlantic is not the base. The DNC attendees ARE THE DEMOCRATIC BASE. The attendees for whom reports started coming in as soon as planes were landing about people singing and chanting four more years *at baggage claim.* The attendees who had spontaneous mass dancing, and who cheered so loud for All Hail President Barack Obama, the Chief, the Boss, that media camerapeople reported had to cover their ears.

Netroots Nation was depressed. Because that’s their natural state; because they sit around listening to Rachel and Chris Hayes and spend all day in a fussy misery about unicorns and other esoteria. Free country, they can consume politics however they want, but they aint the base, they never were. They are part of the media village with some intersection with the Democratic base, but they cannot and should not ever be used as shorthand for the base.

This is a small nit, but it annoyed me to hear Jones say that. And it overjoyed me to see the enthusiasm of the DNC crowd give lie to all of the claims that we consider PBO a failure–that’s bull, it’s not true.

    • Miranda

The base is not sipping on a latte wearing their $250 Gucci crocs in Starbucks, on an Ipad reading The Nation.

Point blank period: the PL wants the moral authority of the Democratic base without giving a damn what Democratic/PBO supporters actually think and feel. Van Jones’ accusation of “depression” are ridiculous; the netroots is “depressed” (as always)–that has nothing to do with the DNC.

        • edp4bho

They also don’t get how “the base” actually lives. Too, they work for and cowtow to the opposition, or don’t they realize this? This is so like black folk hollering about how PBO doesn’t/hasn’t done anything for black folk, such as employment, when they all know damn well were they to be employed, it would be working for white folk who very likely are the oppositon. I can’t get with these people, and am not looking forward to engaging them during GOTV, but I will soldier on.

DNC2012 was just EPIC. At the end of Morning Joe, after hours of little slick remarks and throwing shade, Joe S. broke down and admitted that this was the best convention since the Reagan years. He knows it, I know it, and the country knows it:

Friday Update: Obama’s ‘Bump’ Is Really Showing

Friday: Gallup, as usual, posted its latest poll findings at 1 pm–and found a big bounce for Obama from this year’s convention, as we first noted below. They show a very strong one-day 3% hike in his approval rating to 52%–his highest mark in many months. This means that he gained a whopping 7% in just the past three days.

Also, for the first time in more than a week, the numbers on his contest with Romney moved. It had been a 47% to 46% lead for him (with no change from the RNC)–but now he has opened lead to 3%, at 48%-45%. And that’s in a 7-day poll average with only the first couple days of the DNC factored in, so it should go up a bit more over the next few days. (Note: Gallup site erratic, probably due to heavy traffic right now.)

Ignore the media concern trolling–PBO did GREAT; Clinton did great; Michelle was beautiful and showed us PBO’s heart on a platter; all of the speakers presented file cabinet of file cabinet of receipts for what this fantastic WH has delivered. And the crowd, the real Democratic base, briefly given a voice, roared for PBO and lit a fire for the Democratic party. Just wonderful times, and this energy is infectious, which is why the media is on overdrive trying to convince swing voters that we consider PBO a failure or disappointment. DNC2012 will go down as one of the best conventions in modern memory, I’m convinced of that.

that convention was on point. I know folks complained about the second day early speakers, but while they might not have been the ‘best’ speakers, they spoke truth to power -one after another after another.
