Friday Open Thread: African-Americans in Aviation and Space

It’s Friday P.O.U. Family and I will continue with this week’s theme, African-Americans in Aviation and Space.

Willa Brown, (22 January 1906-18 July 1992), was an American aviatrix and educator.

Willa Brown Chappell was a 1927 graduate of the Indiana State University with a degree in education.

As a young high school teacher in Gary, Indiana, and later as a social worker in Chicago, Willa Brown felt that her talents were not being used to their greatest use; she sought greater challenges and adventures in life, especially if they could be found outside the limited career fields normally open to African Americans.

She decided to learn to fly, studying with Cornelius R. Coffey, a certified flight instructor and expert aviation mechanic at one of Chicago’s racially segregated airports. She earned her private pilot’s license in 1938. Later, Brown and Coffey married and established the Coffey School of Aeronautics at Harlem Airport in Chicago, where they trained black pilots and aviation mechanics.

Together with Cornelius Coffey and Enoch P. Waters, Willa Brown helped form the National Airmen’s Association of America in 1939, whose main goal was to get black aviation cadets into the United States military. As the organization’s national secretary and the president of the Chicago branch, Brown became an activist for racial equality.

She continually lobbied the government for integration of black pilots into the segregated Army Air Corps and the federal Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP), the system established by the Civil Aeronautics Authority to provide a pool of civilian pilots for use during national emergencies. Subsequently, when Congress finally voted to allow separate-but-equal participation of blacks in civilian flight training programs, the Coffey School of Aeronautics was chosen for participation in the CPTP.

Brown became the coordinator for the CPTP in Chicago. Later, her flight school was also selected by the U.S. Army to provide black trainees for the Air Corps pilot training program at the Tuskegee Institute.

Willa Brown eventually became the coordinator of war-training service for the Civil Aeronautics Authority and later was a member of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Women’s Advisory Board. She was the first black female officer in the Civil Air Patrol and the first black woman to hold a commercial pilot’s license in the United States.

In 2010, Ms. Brown was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award by the Indiana State University Alumni Association.

Melody Barnes was *outstanding* on Morning Joe. She responded to Joe S concern-trolling re: the “change” remarks with a rapid fire of facts; shut him down. She was so impressive.

Another point of interest: Donnie Deutsch (sp?) was on the program as well, and he and Joe agreed that the media, while center-left, was also biased towards “new stories” and would thus look to rehabilitate Romney, basically for their horserace.

It’s the same point that has been made here so many times about the corruption of the national media and what they’ve done to this country while taking no responsibility for it, but it was striking to hear these marketing/PR people masquerading as newsmakers openly state without shame that regardless of reality and truth, they would be selling a “narrative” of Romney as a comeback kid.

Really insane times, and once again I thank God for President Obama for being strong enough to not only weather this insanity but to remind us that if we work together, we have the power to overcome a stacked deck such as this. I will forever be grateful to Barack Obama and his fam.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

They’re right about the media trying to portray Romney as a comeback kid. The Today Show, CBS This Morning and GMA were pushing that bs based on PBO’s “change” comment on Univision, even tho his comment is the same thing he’s been saying since winning in ’08.

      • Ebogan63

Monicle Mitt said the same thing in ’07, they can miss me with that bullshit.

        • conlakappa

With the monocle and his arguable style [*cough*], he’s more resembling Mr. Peanut.

      • jds09

My hope this that this bullshit will be the tipping point for pundit credibility. It might help ratings over the next quarter, but I hope in the long run their ratings fall off a cliff.

I don’t watch that show. You have great courage and I commend you.

Melody Barnes knows the policy/issues terrain of this country so well that opinions from any corner can never shoot down her arsenal of facts. She’s leaving the administration and will be missed.

She left the administration over a year ago but makes a great surrogate.

    @EricBoehlert:
wow. NJ unemployment under Gov Chrisite climbs even higher to 9.9% (!!); 35-yr high. http://bit.ly/QHqhNj
    **********

I bet Governor Christie could use those hundreds of millions of dollars in Race to the Top money which HE lost his state due to his refusal to allow the teachers’ union a seat at the table (as Race to the Top grants privilege state education programs in which all stakeholders come together to create solutions, and the bully Christie just wouldn’t do it, and froze out the union). And I wonder when New Jersey will revisit the question of whether it was indeed wise to scrap a massive transportation project and the jobs which it would have brought in. He’s failing, and cursing people out and acting the fool won’t reverse that.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

And THIS is the REAL reason why Christie isn’t Romney running mate. It also explains why he’s been quiet as a church mouse since the RNC.

      • GN

Yup. he made a series of disastrous austerity-like decisions which played well politically to people resentful of high property taxes, but were the absolute wrong thing to do for New Jersey. I also think that he didn’t want to go down with Mittens and is dreaming of 2016, as his RNC speech was all about himself.

    • goldenstar

Sooooo, where in the universe does Mr. Booker fit? In addition to his back-stabbing performance on MTP, methinks that he’s made a couple deals with the devil that may have not made it to the light of public scrutiny.

Well, he does like to run INTO burning buildings…

      FatMan is lucky:
      1) He has a security detail.
      2) He hasn’t come up against the right person with his bullshit.
‘Cause if he goes toe-to-toe with the wrong person, he loses, I don’t care how many Ho-Hos and Yoo-Hoo’s he ingests.

      • jds09

My Governor, Jerry Brown who is 74 challenged him to a 3 mile race and push-up contest. Christie needs to pipe down. lol

    • MsKitty

Found it very interesting that his Secretary of Labor was interviewed on the local radio news station trying to spin, saying that the national numbers aren’t always accurate and that he’s gonna contact them to make sure the numbers do a better job of reflecting the jobs that were added in NJ lately.

That seems to be the GOP way lately, when all else fails create your own reality.

    Mornin’ POU!

Brace yourselves for this! (h/t to @ritaag)

EXCLUSIVE: Mitt Romney’s Son Tagg Signed ‘Abortion’ Clause in His Surrogate Birth Contract

TMZ has learned Mitt Romney’s son Tagg — who had twins this year through a surrogate — signed an agreement that gave the surrogate, as well as Tagg and his wife, the right to abort the fetuses in non-life threatening situations … and Mitt Romney covered some of the expenses connected with the arrangement … and it may boil down to an incredibly stupid mistake.

The twin boys — David Mitt and William Ryder — were born on May 4, 2012. We’ve learned Tagg and his wife Jen, along with the surrogate and her husband, signed a Gestational Carrier Agreement dated July 28, 2011. Paragraph 13 of the agreement reads as follows:

“If in the opinion of the treating physician or her independent obstetrician there is potential physical harm to the surrogate, the decision to abort or not abort is to be made by the surrogate.”

        Why, why, why? (snark). ;-)

And now the conversation about the family’s reliance on surrogacy has entered the conversation…doesn’t that really mean “the MS whose specter we’re trying to avoid” with the non-life-threatening situations?

ICYMI, from last night, vintage Miss Ann:

Ann Romney to critics: ‘Stop it. This is hard’

[Speaking to Republicans like Noonan who committed the sin of pointing out that the emperor has no clothes; Mittens is running an incompetent campaign:]

“Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring,” she said. “This is hard and, you know, it’s an important thing that we’re doing right now and it’s an important election and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt’s qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country.”

Just as a sidenote: wasn’t Mittens just caught on tape expressing disdain for perpetual victims? One core irony of that is just how much he and his wife, who are spoiled and entitled, are always acting aggrieved and put upon as if anybody asked them to run for the WH.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Funny how the media is either glossing over this tape, or not mentioning it at all. Can you imagine if this was FLOTUS on tape saying this?

Why, they’d swear it was the “whitey” tape, sho’ nuf!

I will always feel that JoeChainz was the subject of a vicious and mendacious attack cooked up by the far right and the utterly corrupt national media, designed to make him look like a racist and buffoon based on absolutely nothing. So it makes me so happy to see that he really made it rain re: the DNC ratings!

Joe Biden Was Most-Watched Convention Speaker

New York Daily News: “Nielsen has finished compiling the ratings from all the networks that covered the conventions, right down to C-Span, and a higher percentage of the total TV universe tuned in to Biden than to anyone else. Specifically, Nielsen figures show Biden was watched by 14.7% of the 289.7 million people who live in U.S. television homes. That’s about 43.6 million people.”

In contrast, President Obama was second with 13.7%, or about 39.7 million, while Mitt Romney was third with 12.5%, or 36.2 million.

Plain and simple….God don’t like ugly.

The GOP tried to do everything to paint Joe Biden in an ugly caricature fashion and it blew up in their faces, just like their attempts to stereotype POTUS and FLOTUS.

Pioneering talk show host Ellis Haizlip literally brought ‘SOUL’ to television
Haizlip’s “SOUL” achieved many firsts for blacks in TV; his niece Melissa Haizlip is developing a documentary on his life and work with the PBS show
    NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

You would think the late Ellis Haizlip’s name would be a household word, especially in the African-American community, given the things he did and when he did them.

And it will be, if his niece, Melissa Haizlip, has anything to say about it.

Melissa Haizlip, with senior director Sam Pollard, are the brains behind “Mr. SOUL!: Ellis Haizlip and the Birth of Black Power TV.” It is a documentary about Haizlip and “SOUL!”, the groundbreaking television show he hosted and produced on WNDT, (now WNET Channel 13) for 130 episodes that ran from September, 1968 to 1973.

“SOUL!” had many firsts: the first television show with an African-American host, the first talk show targeting the black community, the first television show to present a spectrum of black entertainers, politicians and sports figures — many of them Haizlip’s friends, all of them mostly banned from the segregated television of the late Civil Rights era – discussing the issues of the day.

Black women rally against voter ID laws
    Posted: Sep 21, 2012 3:35 AM EDT Updated: Sep 21, 2012 5:01 AM EDT

    By SUZANNE GAMBOA
    Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) – Deidra Reese isn’t waiting for people to come to her to find out whether they are registered to vote.

With iPad in hand, Reese is going to community centers, homes and churches in nine Ohio cities, looking up registrations to make sure voters have proper ID and everything else they need to cast ballots on Election Day.

“We are not going to give back one single inch. We have fought too long and too hard,” said Reese, 45, coordinator of the Columbus-based Ohio Unity Coalition, an affiliate of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation.

Reese is part of a cadre of black women engaged in a revived wave of voting rights advocacy four years after the historic election of the nation’s first black president. Provoked by voting law changes in various states, they have decided to help voters navigate the system – a fitting role, they say, given that black women had the highest turnout of any group of voters in 2008.

“We’ve forgotten our mothers went to three jobs, picked us up from school, put the macaroni and cheese on the table, got up and got somebody registered to vote,” said actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, 1 of several women who participated in a strategy session this week during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s annual legislative conference in the nation’s capital. Ralph is married to Pennsylvania state Sen. Vincent Hughes.

Parent locked out of Gov. Scott’s school meetings because of security check

TALLAHASSEE — La’Tasha Reed Dullivan wanted to attend the governor’s education listening tour when he arrived at her son’s charter school last week. But, even though she has passed numerous state security screenings and is authorized to work with disabled children and their families, she was rejected.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement had determined that Dullivan was a security risk.

“Because of confidentiality, we can’t disclose why an individual person was denied except to say each person is evaluated on a case-by-case basis,” said Gretl Plessinger, FDLE spokeswoman. She would not clarify what is deemed a security risk.

On Saturday, she ran a check on herself through FDLE’s criminal history database. The report read: “FDLE found no Florida criminal history based on the information provided.”

“I assumed there were other things,” Dullivan concluded. Maybe it was because she is a registered Democrat. Maybe it was because the room was full. “I am not an unsafe person,” she told the Times/Herald.

    Doghouse Riley, with the shorter:

… Let’s just say it plainly: Mitt Romney is not smart enough to be President of the United States. Paul Ryan is not smart enough to be Vice President of the United States. And that’s taking into consideration the last pair the Republican party and its Court subsidiary foisted on us. And it’s taking into consideration the fact that both men are professional liars, and likely personally dishonest into the bargain. There’s lying, and then there’s lying in such a way that you register enough contempt for the listener to not be bothered with good lies.

This is the Republican party. It’s the Republican party since 1980, the Republican party since the time it lied its way past Watergate, lied its way past Vietnam and Civil Rights, and decided that lying was the key to a shining future. This is the party which has believed, since the Ascension of St. Ronnie, that advertising plus money was not only more powerful than the truth, it was better than the truth. Even smart Republicans have to see, now, what that’s got them. Assuming there are any.

Australian deputy PM: ‘Cranks and crazies’ in GOP threaten US economy

    By NBC News wire services

CANBERRA, Australia — Australia’s deputy prime minister said Friday that the greatest threat to the U.S. economy are “cranks and crazies” in the Republican Party.

Wayne Swan, who also serves as treasurer and is his center-left Labor Party government’s ranking finance minister, took aim at the Tea Party during a speech to a business forum on Friday, breaking a convention among Australia’s major parties to steer clear of U.S. domestic political debates.

Swan, one of few world leaders able to boast his country had avoided recession during the global financial crisis, also labelled the Tea Party wing of the Republicans as “extreme.”

“Let’s be blunt and acknowledge the biggest threat to the world’s biggest economy are the cranks and crazies that have taken over the Republican Party,” Swan said in a speech in Sydney.

    A new, silly shiny object
    By Steve Benen
    Fri Sep 21, 2012 8:00 AM EDT.

The Romney campaign was going to spend invest considerable time and energy in a 1998 clip in which Barack Obama said he believes in some redistribution of resources, while at the same time fostering competition and innovation in the marketplace.

But that’s so two days ago. Now there’s a new, silly shiny object Team Romney says “will become a major part of his campaign’s message.” Jed Lewison had a good item yesterday featuring this clip from Mitt Romney on the stump in Florida.

Yes, as far as Romney’s concerned, the president “threw in the white flag of surrender,” Romney, unlike Obama, intends to “change Washington … from the inside.”

Remember, the president’s quote was about mobilizing the electorate to change politics from the grassroots up, using the power of regular folks to pressure policymakers to do the right thing. This is Romney’s new manufactured outrage.

Let’s count the ways in which this entire line of attack is absurd.

    Paul Krugman:

By now everyone knows how Mitt Romney washed his hands of almost half the country …. But here’s the question: Should we imagine that Mr. Romney and his party would think better of the 47 percent on learning that the great majority of them actually are or were hard workers, who very much have taken personal responsibility for their lives? And the answer is no.

For the fact is that the modern Republican Party just doesn’t have much respect for people who work for other people, no matter how faithfully and well they do their jobs. All the party’s affection is reserved for “job creators,” aka employers and investors. Leading figures in the party find it hard even to pretend to have any regard for ordinary working families….

Am I exaggerating? Consider the Twitter message sent out by Eric Cantor on Labor Day ….. “Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success.” Yes, on a day set aside to honor workers, all Mr. Cantor could bring himself to do was praise their bosses.

….. what people are now calling the Boca Moment wasn’t some trivial gaffe. It was a window into the true attitudes of what has become a party of the wealthy, by the wealthy, and for the wealthy, a party that considers the rest of us unworthy of even a pretense of respect.

    Charles P. Pierce: ….

He gets beaten like a drum for dismissing half the country he’s allegedly asking to vote for him – including the old, the lame, the blind, the crippled, and everyone who got that way during a war ……. So, when some enterprising citizen journalists dig up and barber a 14-year-old quote from the president, Willard not only makes it his own, but he attaches it to a previously barbered quote that he and his party played with like dogs with a rubber bone throughout what is reckoned to be the most utterly truthless political convention of the modern era. And he does so full in the hope that the national media by and large will declare two-tie, all-tie, thereby getting him past the fact that he sounded like Scrooge before the spirits came to call…..

…. “Redistribution” is a magic word that transforms Your government benefits into something to be protected from Those People who want to take them from you. It turns Your Medicare into Their welfare check and, therefore, they mooch while you earn. Moreover, it can fashion a candidate’s rampant plutocratic buffoonery into a simple political debate. Turning the enthusiasm gap on its head
    By Steve Benen
    Fri Sep 21, 2012 8:35 AM EDT.

Chris Cillizza noted yesterday that for much of 2012, “Republicans have enjoyed an enthusiasm edge — largely attributed to the fact that they are the party without control of the White House and whose base is animated by a deep-seeded distaste for the current president.”

Quite right. Rank-and-file GOP voters were underwhelmed by their presidential choices during the Republican nominating process, and their comfort level with Mitt Romney has lagged throughout 2012. But their blinding hatred of President Obama has nevertheless given the party an advantage when it comes to voter enthusiasm.

    At least it used to.

Gallup released a poll yesterday on voter enthusiasm in swing states, and I put together this chart based on the results. On the left, you’ll notice Gallup data from late June, which found Republicans with an edge when it came to those who considered themselves “extremely” or “very” enthusiastic about voting in this year’s presidential election.

On the right, you’ll see the latest figures, based on a poll that wrapped up earlier this week. The good news for Republicans is that GOP voters are more enthusiastic now than they were in June. The bad news for Republicans is that swing-state Democratic voters are much more enthusiastic, and have surged past their rivals.

The agreement between the two allies is the first the United States has signed in its efforts to implement the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), a 2010 law that mandates that offshore banks disclose information on Americans’ accounts or face a withholding fee.

Mark Mazur, the assistant Treasury secretary for tax policy, said Friday that the department was pleased that the United Kingdom was the first country with which it came to an agreement. France, Germany, Italy and Spain have also pledged to help implement the law.[....]

I hate to bring the candidates’ wives into the whole campaign. I mean, I know that that they are out there campaigning and are therefore fair-game, but I never said a bad word about Laura Bush is the eight years that she spent in the White House. I don’t believe in that, except in the most extraordinary of circumstances. But Ann Romney wants Republicans to leave her husband ALOOOONE, and I think it is pathetic. Ann Romney, by her own admission, has never worked a day in her life, and her husband hasn’t worked a day since he left his job as governor of Massachusetts seven years ago. She doesn’t get to tell anyone about hard work. She needs to STFU.

The Morning Plum: Why Obama is winning
    By Greg Sargent

A new National Journal/Heartland Monitor Poll out this morning finds Obama leading Mitt Romney nationally by 50-43 among likely voters. The poll probes voter attitudes towards the economy in a very interesting way that really explains why Obama may be winning re-election.

The key takeaway is the poll’s confirmation that Romney’s theory of the race — which is built on the “are you better off” question — seems to be flawed, as I’ve repeated far too often. Ron Brownstein explains:

The survey also shows why it may be difficult for Republicans to center the election on the famous Ronald Reagan question to voters that the party highlighted at its national convention last month: Are you better off than you were four years ago?
That question divides likely voters almost exactly in thirds: in the poll, 31 percent say they are better off than four years ago, while 34 percent say they are worse off and 34 percent say they are about the same. Romney, predictably, wins more than four-fifths of voters who say they are worse off; the president, equally unsurprisingly, attracts almost nine in 10 of those who consider themselves better off.
Crucially, though, Obama holds a commanding 57 percent to 34 percent advantage among those who say their finances are unchanged. One reason for that critical tilt in his direction: Voters who say their finances are unchanged also say, by a resounding 53 percent to 33 percent margin, that they believe the country has been better off over these past four years because Obama, rather than another candidate, won in 2008. Overall, 48 percent say they believe the country is better off because Obama won in 2008, while 41 percent say the nation would be in a stronger position today if another candidate had won.

Romney is losing the argument over the economy
    By Greg Sargent

Mitt Romney and Republicans have long assumed Barack Obama simply can’t win reelection, given the state of the economy. Yet Obama is currently winning, anyway. Why? Perhaps the unexpected dynamics driving this race can be summed up in two sentences:

    1) More Americans are concluding that for all their disappointment, the economy will improve in an Obama second term; and

    2) Romney has failed to persuade people that he would improve the economy any faster than it will improve under Obama.

If this explains why Obama is leading, then the Romney campaign’s big question — “are you better off than you were four years ago?” — simply isn’t the dominant frame voters are adopting to choose the next president. Indeed, there is now a great deal of polling that suggests this to be the case. Taken together, the picture is striking:

    * In this week’s Fox News swing state polls, Obama holds an advantage on the question of who would improve the economy and jobs in Ohio (50-43), in Virginia (49-44), and in Florida (49-46).

    – — -Pair Of Polls Show Obama Up 7 Nationally

    - — -President Barack Obama’s yawning post-convention lead over Mitt Romney has extended to 7 points, according to two new polls released Friday.

Each poll shows the president earning the support of at least 50 percent of likely voters, while also showing a low level of support for Romney. The Heartland Monitor Poll, conducted by FTI Consulting on behalf of All State and the National Journal, shows Obama leading Romney, 50 percent to 43 percent. Obama’s approval rating also hits 50 percent in the poll, while 46 percent of likely voters disapprove of the job he’s doing as president.

The new Reason-Rupe poll, conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International, shows Obama outpacing Romney among likely voters, 52 percent to 45 percent. That includes undecided respondents who are leaning toward one candidate. As has been the case throughout the campaign, the poll shows Obama with a decided edge over Romney on personal popularity.

Fifty-two percent of voters surveyed say they have a favorable view of Obama, compared with 45 percent who have an unfavorable view. Romney, on the other hand, is viewed favorably by only 41 percent of voters nationwide, while 49 percent view the former Massachusetts governor unfavorably.

What working class whites really think about dependency and redistribution
    By Greg Sargent

It’s been widely observed that Mitt Romney’s attacks on Obama over Medicare, welfare, dependency and “redistribution” are about driving up Romney’s share of working class white support. Romney — who may need two thirds of that vote to win — is arguing that Obama isn’t really looking out for their interests and wants to redistribute their hard-earned money and medical benefits to those other people.

    ………………………………………

On “dependency,” the study finds that large numbers of working class whites (46 percent) have received Social Security or disability payments over the last two years; more than a fifth have received food stamps; 19% have received unemployment.

Yet the study also finds that three quarters of working class whites believe poor people have become too dependent on government assistance. There’s obviously overlap there, which bears out what some have already pointed out — many of these voters simply won’t think Romney’s comments about the freeloading 47 percent, or about government “dependency” in general, are about them.

    …………………………………………………….

Nearly two thirds of working class whites want to hike taxes on those over $1 million. More than half say one of our biggest problems is that we “don’t give everyone an equal chance in life.” Seventy-eight percent of them blame America’s economic problems on corporations moving jobs overseas and 69 percent on Wall Street making risky decisions.

    • Tafr

They do not see themselves as the 47% because they are white. There is class warfare going on in this country but some folks are too ignorant and bigoted to get it. This why I hate when Rendell talks about the white working class and Obama. Rendell and the media give these people cover for their racism. They make it seem as if it is fine and dandy that they feel a certain way about people of color; because after all they are the working class. I cannot remember ever hearing a pundit say the phrase black working class.

Rendell and his ilk do these people no favor by giving their racism the green light. I think they do it on purpose to help keep these people down and ignorant. The book what’s the matter with Kansas explains this madness better than I ever could.

      • jds09

…”phrase black working class” is spot on. The dog whistle there is the inference that black people don’t work, hence it allows broke-ass white people to feel superior. I’ve learned that the feeling of superiority is very valuable to them. They are paying thru the nose for it.

In the Heart of Romney World, No Retreat, No Surrender

The talk at the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign headquarters in Boston is of skewed polls, media bias, a bad economy, and a fading Obama bounce.
    By Beth Reinhard

    Updated: September 20, 2012 | 4:12 p.m.
    September 20, 2012 | 3:03 p.m.

It’s heads down and status quo at the beige, three-story building that is Mitt Romney’s campaign headquarters, despite the “navel-gazing, handwringing and bedwetting” — as one consultant dismissively put it — consuming some Republicans this week.

That’s the campaign’s story, and staffers are sticking to it.

“We expected all along for this race to be close, to be tight and to be hard fought, and that’s exactly what you’re seeing,” said Romney spokesman Danny Diaz. “At the end of the day, Obama is not going to be able to convince people that he should be rehired.”

But polls showing slightly more optimism about the economy and President Obama’s leadership, as well as a string of missteps by the Romney campaign, have set many Republicans outside this city on edge. In the last week alone, Romney has battled firestorms lit by his remarks describing 47 percent of the country as government freeloaders, reports of campaign infighting, his hair-trigger response to anti-American violence in Egypt and Libya, and a convention most memorable for Clint Eastwood’s bizarre comedy routine.

Veteran campaign hands say Romney sorely needs to flesh out his vision for the country and specific policy details on how he gets there.

Floridians Denied Chance To Vote On Paid Sick Leave |

Orange County Floridians will be unable to cast their votes for or against paid sick leave in November. The contentious debate surrounding a ballot initiative to provide earned sick days to Orange County employees has come to a sad close for sick leave advocates, after county commissioners stalled long enough to prevent the initiative from making the ballot-printing deadline. Despite a court’s order that the initiative be included, big business and the commission colluded to prevent its advancement.

    Things Mitt Romney Can’t Do

Karl Rove has a piece today explaining the deep trouble Mitt Romney is in. Of course, that’s not he puts it — it’s an effort to buck up Republicans, not discourage them. But here’s what Rove says:

In the two weeks before the presidential debates begin, Mr. Romney must define more clearly what he would do as president. In spelling out his five-point plan for the middle class, he’ll have to deepen awareness of how each element would help families in concrete, practical ways, and offer optimism for renewed prosperity.

Let’s look at that plan, shall we? It’s:

    1. Energy independence, presumably through weakened environmental regulation
    2. School choice
    3. Trade agreements, plus implicit China-bashing
    4. Deficit reduction, not explained how
    5. Lower taxes on small businesses (but actually just on the rich), and repealing health reform

First of all, this isn’t a “plan for the middle class”. And do you see anything in there that can “help families in concrete, practical ways”? I don’t. Even if you believed that the Romney plan would yield prosperity, the benefits to middle-class families would come through trickle-down — and assertions that Bush-style policies are just what we need aren’t going to give Romney the boost he wants.

Texas Court Halts State Attempt to Purge Voters as Dead

Texas officials were temporarily barred by a state judge from ordering county election officials to purge presumably dead voters from registration rolls because the initiative may violate the election code. The ruling came in a lawsuit filed yesterday by four voters who were told they would be purged from voter-registration lists as deceased.[....]

In Pennsylvania, the state Supreme Court set aside for further review a ruling allowing the state to enforce a law requiring voters to have photo identification, which the American Civil Liberties Union has argued was aimed at keeping likely Democratic voters away from the polls. The lower court set a hearing on the review for Sept. 25. Voter cases are also under way in Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Lawsuits filed over Florida voting rules include at least two challenging a law ostensibly designed to purge noncitizens from voter lists, which opponents say would disenfranchise new citizens as well.[....]

Obamacare Improved Health Coverage In 20 States, Census Analysis Confirms

Recent census data revealed that, thanks to Obamacare, the uninsured rate in the U.S. dropped significantly from 2010 to 2011 in the largest decline the country has seen since 1999. The Census Bureau released a more detailed analysis of their findings yesterday, breaking the numbers down by each state to confirm that the percentage of Americans without health insurance fell in 20 states last year. Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont had the biggest decreases in their uninsured populations. The states with the highest uninsurance rates in 2010 — 23.7 percent in Texas and 21.3 percent in Florida — also saw slight declines in the rates of their uninsured residents in 2011, dropping to 23 percent and 20.9 percent respectively.

Fox News Fail: Fox Hosts Vote Fraud Expert Who Debunks Their Voter Fraud Claims

George Mason professor Michael McDonald sat down with Shep Smith and delivered a dose of reality to Fox News viewers. Smith asked voter fraud, big problem? McDonald answered, “Well, as far as we can tell the vote fraud occurs primarily along absentee voting so it’s starting right now, and some of the laws that have been implemented don’t really address the source of the main fraud that we see in the system.”

Smith asked, “How would you quantify it?” McDonald said, “Very low. We’ve had millions and millions of voters over the last years, and the likelihood of vote fraud occurring is on the order of winning the lottery…It’s a very rare infrequent sort of thing, but when it does happen we are concerned and election officials do take these allegations seriously. They investigate them fully. Usually, what happens the allegations come and then afterwards we find out that maybe somebody signed on the wrong line on a poll book or something, and that’s the source of the error. It wasn’t really that vote fraud occurred.”[....]

In May, DOT partnered with the Obama Administration’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to launch the Safety Data Initiative.[....] From transportation to the workplace and from crime to consumer product recalls, we know that access to timely information empowers people to make smarter, safer choices.[....] We’re impressed not only by the number of apps and services that have been developed, but also by the diversity of those tools. At Friday’s event, for example, we saw:

PulsePoint, from the San Ramon Fire Protection District, a lifesaving mobile app that allows CPR-trained volunteers to be notified if someone nearby is in need of emergency assistance.

PBOMB – —-Woo! Hoo! —POSITIVE EFFECTS of the ACA –SENIORS —

    – - -Obamacare Will Help Seniors Save $5,000 Over The Next Decade – -

    – - –According to a new report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the health care reform law will help the average American under a traditional Medicare plan save $5,000 from 2010 to 2022.

Medicare beneficiaries who have high prescription costs will save even more — over $18,000 in the same time period — since Obamacare will help make Medicare prescription drug coverage more affordable for seniors by working to close the “donut hole” coverage gap. Already, in the short time period since the law was enacted, 5.5 million seniors and Americans with disabilities have saved over $4 billion on their prescription drugs.

Philadelphia’s Katherine Gajewski is turning a gritty city green

Katherine Gajewski was just 29 years old when Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter asked her to take on the role of city sustainability director. “I was concerned that people wouldn’t take me seriously,” she says. Three years later, those fears have all but disappeared. Using limited staff and resources, her office works long days to earn Philly a green reputation. “Once people see that you’re really serious and you’re working really hard, age isn’t a factor,” she says.

Gajewski works to implement the ambitious city-wide Greenworks Philadelphia plan [PDF], directs a five-county energy-efficiency program, and even organizes a social group of city employees nicknamed the “Young-ish City Government Workers.” For episode 2 of our Knope and change series, about women who are leading the charge to make our cities more sustainable, Gajewski tells Grist about Philly’s lovely bones and her vision for the future (while also making everyone here feel a bit unaccomplished-ish).[....]

    – - -Michelle Obama: Our 20th Wedding Anniversary Is Same Night As First Presidential Debate

    - — Michelle Obama will be sharing her husband with the nation on her and Barack’s twentieth wedding anniversary as the happy day happens to coincide with the first 2012 Presidential debate.

“I learned yesterday — just yesterday [of the date]. I was like really, really? The first presidential debate is on my 20th anniversary?” the First Lady told Access Hollywood’s Michelle Beadle in a new exclusive interview. “All I said was, ‘At least we’ll be together.’”

The first debate will be held in Denver, but Mrs. Obama said she doubts she and her husband will even get to fly to the venue together.

“We don’t campaign together because it’s just more efficient to be in other locations, so I’m sure I’ll be flying in from somewhere and he’s flying in from somewhere else, so I’ll see him right before and I’ll watch him on stage,” she said. “I’ll give him a kiss after the debates and [say], ‘Happy Anniversary.’

“I’m going to make him write it on his hand. ‘Love you, honey’ so that when he waves, it makes ‘I love you honey,’” she added.

As for the First Lady’s duties as the election draws near, she is working hard to keep the younger generations engaged in the political discussion.

    — –Tagg Romney Abortion Clause in Birth Contract – –

    – — -Sept. 21, 2012 After Mitt Romney, who has been running for President for 10 years no, has supported the Pro-Life movement, news today of his son Tagg Romney’s birth contract is quite revealing.

TMZ reports that Tagg Romney and his wife entered into a contract to have a surrogate produce twins that were born on May 4, 2012, just a few months ago.

    – - – -SNIP —
Under the terms of Paul Ryan’s co-sponsored bill- The Personhood Bill signed with Todd Akin, Tagg Romney violated the Sanctity of Human Life Act that never made it through Congress. In other words the Romney family violated their own running mate’s sponsored bill, that of Paul Ryan.

On the moral issues, and on the politically damaging contract, Mitt Romney is said to have helped pay for the IVF procedure, he is in direct violation of his own policies. Romney is running on a Pro-Life platform under which he treats unborn fetuses as human beings. But this violates what the Romney’s do in real life.
    – — -SNIP —
    — -☻Under Paul Ryan’s “Sanctity of Life Bill” any person destroying a fertilized egg, including IVF, or a doctor or healthcare staffer who may destroy some fertilized eggs can be charged with murder one and subject to criminal offenses. The IVF procedure doesn’t come cheap and Tagg Romney may have paid up to $60,000 to conceive two babies, currently not covered under most medical insurance plans. T

Panel Finds Waters Didn’t Violate Ethics Rules in Bank Case
    By ERIC LIPTON

WASHINGTON — Representative Maxine Waters, Democrat of California, did not violate House ethics rules when she contacted the Treasury Department in 2008 about a bank matter, a special investigator announced on Friday. But the House Ethics Committee is still debating whether her chief of staff, Mikael Moore, acted improperly when he contacted House Financial Services Committee staff on behalf of the same bank.

The findings, which still must be acted on by the Ethics Committee, represent some of the final steps in what has been a three-year investigation into Ms. Waters’s actions during the financial crisis. In the fall of 2008, Ms. Waters called Treasury officials to set up a meeting regarding a bank that had asked for a bailout and that her husband owned stock in. The bank, OneUnited, based in Boston, was near collapse.

What does he expect from an Asian woman who thinks the Japanese internment were cool?

      • itgurl_29

        She hates herself.

        • Miranda

          THIS.

      • Worldwatcher7

While Michelle Malkin is quite evil, her anger at the Japanese is in line with the animus a lot of Filipinos and other Pacific Islanders feel. The Japanese were cruel and destructive during WWII, and many Pacific Islanders will never forget or forgive.

        • Aquagranny911

Truth! One of my cousins is married to a Filipino & she despises all things Japanese. We got a 10 minute tirade from her years ago when we bought a used Toyota.

In her defense, her family suffered greatly during WWII

        • nellcote

But it was Japanese-Americans that were interned. Men, women and children suddenly ripped from their homes in the UNITED STATES, their businesses stolen, sent to the physical equivalent of slave quarters in wilderness areas. This would never be done to white people.
That Malkin supports it says a lot about her character. None of it good.

    • rikyrah

she is the Asian equivalent of a slave catching coon.

once you understand THAT about Malkin, all else falls into place.

When you’re on the receiving end of some Grade-A shade from Herman Cain, might wanna rethink your campaign strategy a bit…

Cain Says He Would Have Been Better than Romney

Herman Cain jabbed Mitt Romney while talking to the Gainesville Sun saying that he would have been doing better if he was the Republican presidential nominee, claiming he’d probably have a “substantial lead” on President Obama at this point.

Said Cain: “The reason is quite simple: I have some depth to my ideas.”

A conspiracy theory shrivels in the sun

    By Steve Benen
    Fri Sep 21, 2012 9:15 AM EDT.

Given the attention focused on the presidential race, it was easy to miss the report from the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General on the “Fast and Furious” controversy. The 471-page document, based on 100,000 documents and more than 130 interviews, is the definitive take on what transpired.

And what did the IG find? That the operation was “seriously flawed and supervised irresponsibly” by federal officials in Arizona, but also that Attorney General Eric Holder knew nothing of the botched effort, and there was no White House involvement.

And while that’s important, Kevin Drum raises an important point about the bigger picture.

For over a year, it’s been an article of faith on the right that Fast & Furious was a carefully constructed scheme directed by the White House to trash the Second Amendment and build support for more gun control laws. It wasn’t. Neither the White House nor Eric Holder had any idea what was going on. It was just a local operation that was badly botched. This makes Fast & Furious officially yet another lunatic conservative conspiracy theory that has bitten the dust in the cold light of reality.

Off to lunch with some friends guys. Twitter warriors keep it up.

Romney/Ryan made 2 mistakes, first, sending this young buck to tell old people of AARP that they’ve had it too damn easy. I’m just sayin’ but old people don’t seem to like being lectured by whippersnappers.
Secondly, they made the mistake of assuming the attendees at AARP or like the low info voter crowds of senior they got in FL. Nope, the AARP crowd actually reads the monthlies and pay attention. So yeah you gonna get booed if you attack medicare and such.
