Another reason for filibuster reform: It will help Dems crack down on Wall Street
    By Ryan Cooper
    November 21 at 12:24 pm

The big news right this second is that Democrats have actually taken steps to break the filibuster for executive branch nominees and all judicial ones save to the Supreme Court. This is great news for many reasons, but a big one has to do with financial regulation. With Democrats on the D.C. Circuit Court, the rules in the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill (both existing and ones yet to be finalized) will have a much greater chance of surviving frivolous court challenges.

The success of financial regulation is crucial to the success of the Democratic Party in the long term, particularly if the party is going to stake out a economically populist position. Filibuster reform may be a key ingredient in making that happen. At stake are the three empty seats on the D.C. Circuit Court. Today, either Republicans will cave and allow new judges to get a vote, or the filibuster reform will allow them to be seated with simple majority vote in the Senate.

The Senate has gone nuclear. Here’s what’s next.
    By Jonathan Bernstein
    November 21 at 1:23 pm

Harry Reid and the Democrats today have acted: we have majority-imposed rules change in the Senate, by a 52-48 vote. All Republicans opposed the change, and three Democrats — Joe Manchin, Mark Pryor, and Carl Levin — joined them. From now on, simple majorities will be sufficient to confirm executive branch and judicial nominees. Reid made an exception for Supreme Court nominees, but that’s surely a technicality; if and when a successful filibuster is conducted against a Supreme Court choice, it’s virtually certain that the exception will be closed.

This is a major, major, event. It changes how the nation is governed in a significant way. That said, it’s not as if the Senate has been static since the last time filibuster rules were changed (at least in a major way) almost 40 years ago; most reform is incremental, and one could argue that the rules change today returns nominations closer to how things were done in the 1970s than they have been for the last decade, and especially during the Obama era. However, what’s more likely is that we’ll see a Senate that isn’t really like either of those bodies.

The timing was excellent on this. The way they rolled it out, under the fog of the Obamacare website bs, with infograhpics and vines designed to go viral. Perfect. The 82 (filibusters of PBO) to 86 (the entire history of presidential filibusters) number is truly epic. Even folks with half a brain have to slow their role and say “is this fair?” Masterful.

Did frustrated mainstream Republicans help pull the trigger?
    By Jonathan Bernstein
    November 21 at 4:48 pm

The big mystery of today’s majority-imposed rules change in the Senate is: What happened to the deal-making Republicans? There’s nothing much to figure out on the Democratic side. It was clear to most observers that the three-seat blockade of the D.C. Circuit Court was solidly over the line separating Democratic senators’ individual preference for maintaining the filibuster and their party interest in seating a Democratic president’s choices for the federal bench. Democrats believed that they had no choice but to proceed.

Once Again, Republican Obstinacy Bites Them in the Ass
    —By Kevin Drum
    | Thu Nov. 21, 2013 10:32 AM PST

But what if filibusters came at a cost of some sort? There have been several proposals along these lines, and all of them would have allowed the minority party to obstruct things they truly felt strongly about. But there would have been a limit to how many things could be obstructed, or how long the obstruction could go on, and the majority party could eventually have gotten its way if it felt strongly enough. It would have been ugly, but at least Republicans would have retained some ability to gum up the works.

Instead, by refusing to compromise in any way, they’ve lost everything. Just as they lost everything on health care by refusing to engage with Democrats on the Affordable Care Act. Just as they lost everything on the government shutdown and the debt ceiling. Just as they lost the 2012 election.

Senators Introduce Bill To Help Homeless And Foster Youth Attend College

The United States recently set an depressing record when the number of homeless students across the country reached an all-time high last year. More than 1.1 million students in preschool or K-12 were homeless during the 2011-12 school year, fully 2 percent of all students in the nation.[....] Currently, there are many hurdles that are unique to homeless youth that make it more difficult both to get to college and to stay afloat once they’re there.

Many have difficulty establishing residency in order to qualify for in-state tuition, and they must have their status as independent students without parental support re-determined every year. This bill would remove those barriers, providing in-state tuition for homeless and foster youth and allowing their unaccompanied status to be
set in perpetuity. In addition, the bill would help homeless and foster youth find housing both during the school year and between terms.[...]

High Schoolers Build Satellite and NASA Launches It to Space – Posted on November 20, 2013

Last night, a rocket took off. It launched from an island in Virginia and sailed into the atmosphere. Aboard were 29 satellites. One of those satellites was built by high schoolers. That satellite — in space right now, whizzing over our heads — is called the TJ3Sat. Built by Virginia high-school students and their teachers, it represents more than six years of work. You can also interact with it right now.[....]

Georgia GOP dusts off Jim Crow tactic: Changing election date
    11/22/13

For years, Augusta, Georgia, has held its local elections in November, when turnout is high. But last year, state Republicans changed the election date to July, when far fewer blacks make it to the polls.

The effort was blocked under the Voting Rights Act (VRA) by the federal government, which cited the harm that the change would do to minorities. But now that the Supreme Court has badly weakened the landmark civil rights law, the move looks to be back on. The city’s African-Americans say they know what’s behind it.

“It’s a maneuver to suppress our voting participation,” Dr. Charles Smith, the president of Augusta’s NACCP branch, told msnbc.

The dispute is flaring at a time when Georgia, long deep-red, is becoming increasingly politically competitive, and Democrats have nominated two candidates with famous names for high-profile statewide races next year.

—–It’s been more than 50 years, but when your job is to protect a president, you never forget what it was like.
For Abraham Bolden, protecting President John F. Kennedy in 1961 was a“miracle,” for someone who grew up poor in East St. Louis.

“Not one time that the president saw me in the White House, did he pass me and not say, ‘How are you Mr. Bolden?’” Bolden said in an interview this week from his home. “He just seemed like a very rich man who was out of place who should have been among us – a leader among our people.”

Friday, the fiftieth anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination, marked yet another opportunity for Bolden to recall the several intimate moments he shared with Kennedy and other members of his family and administration. Bolden, 78, joined the United States Secret service in October, 1960 after several years in law enforcement.

De Blasio gets policing advice — from ex-cons
By Frank Rosario and Natalie O’Neill
    November 21, 2013 | 8:27pm

Forget Ray Kelly, Bill de Blasio is getting his policing advice from the real experts — hardened criminals.

A group of 50 ex-cons, junkies and chronic vagrants gathered at a Manhattan “Think Tank” Thursday to describe what they thought the NYPD should be doing to make their lives easier.

The felonious forum outlined a clear “get-soft-on-crime” vision.

“I like the idea of ending stop and frisk. That was the first thing that was totally there for me,” opined Mikell Green-Grand, a 49-year-old former jailbird who has convictions for grand larceny and identity theft.

How Michelle Obama became a feminist nightmare.
    By MICHELLE COTTLE
    Nov 21, 2013

Coverage of the new program stressed that it marks a rare foray into policy by FLOTUS. The New York Times observed that many of Michelle Obama’s supporters have been itching for her to move beyond “evangelizing exercise and good eating habits,” noting that, despite her widespread popularity, the first lady has long “been derided by critics who hoped she would use her historic position to move more deeply into policy.”

    • jziglar

I can’t stand some of these feminists.

    • gn

Ridiculous article. If anything, Michelle Obama bridges the gap between the school of thought which values women competing successfully in male-dominated fields versus the school of thought which wants to see more of an embracing of femininity rather than sex-neutral (“both sexes are the same”) as the ideal. The First Lady has experienced both success in a male-dominated field as well as celebration for being an incredible mother and partner. I thought that the goal of feminism was to work to ensure that every girl could enjoy the First Lady’s choices…

      • itgurl_29

But she’s black and is supposed to be taking care of white women’s needs so…

How dare this black woman nurture her own kids and not make her career her life?

        • gn

I honestly have trouble thinking of a more positive role model for girls than Michelle Obama. Speaks volumes that she’d be diminished by people claiming to want girls to have more choices, to have motherhood respected way more, to have girls valued for substance, to have women valued more in marriages and other types of relationships…I could go on and on. She’s an ideal.

          • TresL

It’s amazing that they worship a woman with no accomplishments and a husband who has treated her like shit with his multiple affairs and mistreatment of women who speak out against him. Oh, and they worship him too which means they should ridiculed or ignored.

        • Miranda

FLOTUS supposed to be telling them they is kind, smart ans impotunt.

Her job is to constantly validate their existence. Isn’t that what black women here for?

        • malletgirl02

This so much, during slavery many black women were forced to take care of their master’s children while being forced to neglect their own. A black women being able to nurture her own kids is actually quite powerful in the face of history.

        • malletgirl02

During slavery black women were force to cater to their master’s and his family’s needs over her own children. A black women being able to nurture her own children is actually a power statement in the face of history.

    • gn

I think ABL is on to something:

      @AngryBlackLady
This is all about comparing this FLOTUS with a past FLOTUS who is running in 2016. Pro-tip: You’re not winning over black ppl w/ this shit.

      • crazycanuck

I think that has a lot to do with it. They are not fooling anyone.

      • jziglar

On top of that they forget that the 2 for 1 deal failed. Hillary had to take a step back and fit the role of a traditional spouse of a president. After she did that her likability numbers went up especially after the health care reform failure.

    • Alma98

As Jill says hate on haters, you do not get to decide what she can & cannot do. Black women contributed to this country more than they ever have. Such as supplying the workforce that built this country, slavery. We were feminists before it became popular. Also look at the atrocious comments on an article talking about feminism. Comments that if were said about Hillary they would go apeshit over. Like rikyrah said they can kiss my black ass!

    • itgurl_29

And this is what it comes down to for these white feminits:

      “@karnythia

Oh I don’t think they actually want her to run for office. Just to be whipping girl for Hilary or somesuch”

      BOOM!

    • qosine

      AEnDub

      Your definition of a
“feminist” is narrow at best. This is a terrible piece of journalism.
If you want to say that you’re disappointed with Michelle Obama for not taking
a more outspoken role as a first lady- then say so. Don’t, however, try and put
it within the small minded confines with which you define feminism. Feminism
allows women to take the role with which they choose and be proud of it and not
harassed. If Michelle is choosing this role then that is her right. How dare
you find the audacity to criticize her? I for one am proud to have her take on
leading this nation’s children, talking directly to them, involving the people
they admire in initiatives to strengthen their health: both physically and
mentally. Perhaps you should change your attitude- and your scope.

    • Tafr

Y’all remember when those feminist went ape shit because the first lady said her number one priority are her girls? These women are trying to paint the first lady into some box, which is something they bitch about daily when it comes to women. I tell you one thing we all know Shasha and Malia are going to grow up to be outstanding women, not only because of their character, but also because their mama has been front in center in their lives. These are the same feminist that have coined that awful term slut shaming. All these young girls taking half nude pics of themselves obviously are missing something in life. So instead of coddling these misguided girls perhaps these feminist can take a good look at Michelle Obama, stop putting down parenting and motherhood, and get a damn clue. You know stop trying to put women in a neat little box to satisfy their agenda.

Obama orders day of remembrance for Kennedy

    — — –President Obama ordered government buildings to fly the American flag at half-staff to commemorate the 50th anniversary of former President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

Obama signed a presidential proclamation making Friday a day of remembrance for the 25th president.

–“With broad vision and soaring but sober idealism, President John F. Kennedy had called a generation to service and summoned a Nation to greatness. Today, we honor his memory and celebrate his enduring imprint on American history,” Obama wrote in the proclamation.

Obama highlighted Kennedy’s leadership through the Cuban missile crisis, his speech in Berlin, his signing of the Equal Pay Act and his work on civil rights.

Obama is slated to hold a video-conference with Peace Corp volunteers from Tanzania on Friday morning — a program Kennedy established during his time in office.

Poll Fishing: How Today’s Media Distorts Data to Drive Ratings

[....] To prove this point, let’s look at the poll from The Washington Post, that is currently at the center of the media news cycle. The 42% number sticks out above all others.[....] According to this particular poll, 1,006 random adults were polled by telephone from November 14-17. This statement alone should draw red flags from more critical readers about the validity of this, or any, poll that ends up making national news.

The first issue is the fact that it was random adults who were
surveyed. This can be voters or non-voters. It can be high school
seniors or it can be elderly couples. Therefore, it’s important to
remember that not everybody surveyed will end up voting in future
elections. Next, the fact that this survey was done by telephone is a huge red flag. The overwhelming majority of millennials were not
contacted for this poll, seeing as they are largely cell phone users.
Millennials overwhelmingly support Barack Obama and therefore were not accurately represented.

The last issue to consider is who exactly takes the time to respond to a phone poll these days. Most people tend to ignore phone calls from an unidentified number or immediately hang up once a robotic voice comes on. Chances are, the only people who responded to this poll were older, affluent, and were those that had strong opinions about the job the president was doing. In other words, the people who are most upset about Barack Obama’s leadership.[...]

EKU Plans Response To White Supremacist Flyers Posted In Classroom Buildings
By Charles Compton and WEKU News

White supremacist flyers have circulated around the campus of Eastern Kentucky University. They claim a “non-violent genocide” has been launched against so-called “white countries.” University spokesman Marc Whitt confirms several flyers were posted in classroom buildings that serve police and firefighter trainees. Whitt says an official investigation is underway.

“At this point, no one has information leading to any suspects, so it would be premature for us to guess as to who or which group was responsible,” said Whitt.

WEKU has confirmed an African-American professor believes the flyers target her and she has reportedly complained of harassment to school officials.

Upgrading Existing Pipelines Would Create More Jobs Than Building Keystone XL, Report Argues

The report, published by the E3 Network and the Labor Network for Sustainability, found that improving water, sewer, and gas infrastructure in the five states along the proposed route of Keystone XL — Montana, Oklahoma, Nebraska, South Dakota and Texas — would create 362,998 total jobs — five times more than the total (short- and long-term) jobs projected to be created by Keystone XL.[....]

Since the State Department’s analysis was only for Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska, the report used the costs per mile and number of jobs created per mile in the three states analyzed by the State Department to estimate the additional jobs in Texas and Oklahoma. The report found that, using those estimation techniques, Keystone XL would create a total of 67,672 jobs in the five states (excluding Kansas) it travels through.[....]

Health Law Is Dividing Republican Governors
    By JONATHAN MARTIN

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Republicans are planning to use the troubled health law against Democrats in next year’s midterm elections, but the Affordable Care Act is increasingly dividing their party, too.

At the annual meeting here of the nation’s Republican governors, the ones who are eyeing presidential runs in 2016 say they oppose the health care law. But there is sharp disagreement among those who have helped carry out the law and those who remain entrenched in their opposition.

These early divisions reveal not only the difficult calculations of ambitious Republican politicians as they look to the next presidential campaign, but also the complexities of being a governor rather than a lawmaker at a time when the party’s base is hostile to those who cooperate with Democrats.

Karzai wants to defer signing Afghan-US security deal

[....] Karzai’s spokesman told Reuters the Afghan president would sign the deal after elections — which Karzai is not allowed to contest — were completed in April 2014. The spokesman did not explain how Karzai would sign it after a new president was elected.

A delay in signing the so-called Bilateral Security Agreement,
allowing US troops to stay beyond 2014 to train Afghan forces, could be a potential deal breaker. US officials have pushed for a deal as soon as possible, since delaying would put it too close to the end of the NATO combat mission.[....]

McDonald’s Website Tells Its Workers To Eat Smaller Meals, Sell Xmas Gifts On Ebay (IMAGES & VIDEO)

It’s almost that magical time of year, where Americans engage in
vertical food distribution, cheer the Cowboys getting in the end zone, and trample over one another in their quest to celebrate the birth of the flat screen TV. It’s also a time where mega corporations are supposed to be somewhat less a-holes. Well, maybe not if you’re McDonald’s.

McDonald’s, in partnership with Visa, runs a financial planning website with a very Hallmark-y message for its low paid employees: eat smaller meals and sell those annoying Christmas gifts on Ebay. Here’s a screenshot from the McDonald’s website:[....] Just in case you were thinking of either buying or receiving presents this year for Christmas, don’t. You work for McDonald’s; you should he happy enough. With that in mind, the McDonald’s website wants you to

AFTERBUZZ TV — Scandal is a weekly “after show” for fans of ABC’s Scandal. In this show, host Emile Ennis Jr. breaks down the episode in which Josie’s campaign faces a potential crisis, so Olivia’s team attempt to manage it while also trying to get to the bottom of Operation Remington. Elsewhere, Cyrus fails to think of the collateral damage that could result from his plotting Sally’s downfall. There to help Emile are co-hosts Sofia Stanley, Kennelia Stradwick, and Bamm Ericsen. It’s Scandal’s “Vermont Is for Lovers, Too” podcast!

SALT LAKE CITY November 21, 2013 (AP)

Utah Attorney General John Swallow’s resignation was an abrupt end to an otherwise quick political ascension and leaves the state’s top law enforcement office in limbo just a year after Swallow was elected to a four-year term.

His decision to leave caps 10 months of investigations and allegations of bribery, misconduct and shady dealings that gnawed at the 51-year-old Republican during his short tenure.

The democrats should make the election about economic ideas. Already they are pushing for increases in the minimum wage on the federal level and state level. Then they have the expansion of social security proposal, immigration reform, infrastructure proposals, and more. The only thing the GOP has is hating on Obama and the rest of the democratic party, hating obamacare, tax cuts for the wealthy, and obstruction. Not exactly a compelling message.

Prominent Nashville pediatrician pleads guilty to health care fraud

    • qosine

Oh, this is also part of that discrediting TennCare rollout, too.
The GOP, of course, doesn’t want to expand Medicaid here,
cause it’ll be “just like that debacle TennCare.” Now, of course,
this pediatrician committed fraud and so glad to see him
caught and punished. But his case is part of that national
GOP plan to discredit Obamacare. It’s no accident, they
feature a black pediatrician ripping off TC.

      • Miranda

Yep, they will use him as the “face” of the bad “Obamacare” on every right wing show.

      • malletgirl02

They forget this crap was happening before Obamacare. There was a story in the New York Times about the misuse of Adderall that predated Tenncare. Also if they are so worried about powerful medication getting out into the community they need to be schooling their own people not to sell their medications, not to lie about symptoms, and not to buy those black market medications.

San Jose State Students Charged With Hate Crime Against Black Roommate

Three white students are accused of putting a bike lock around a black roommate’s neck, hanging Nazi symbols around the apartment and writing the N-word on a dry eraser board in the suite that they shared.
By NBC Bay Area staff and wires
    Thursday, Nov 21, 2013 | Updated 3:23 PM PST

Members of the Black Students Union at San Jose State University plan to rally Thursday on campus to demand answers over the reported tormenting of an African-American freshman that included putting a bike lock around his neck, hanging Nazi symbols around the apartment and writing the N-word on a dry eraser board in the suite that they shared.

Prosecutors on Wednesday filed misdemeanor hate-crime and battery charges against three students accused of committing the racist acts against the victim in an on-campus housing complex.

    more here: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/San-Jose-State-Students-Charged-With-Hate-Crime-Against-Black-Roommate-232788621.html

      • Alma98

This isn’t a misdemeanor hate crime either, they physically assaulted the student. We know why they lessened the crime to a misdemeanor too.

    • Daltex82

So now we can’t even go to college in peace! Ruin their lives. Kick them out of college and put them in jail, they would have no problem doing this if black kids were harassing white kids; and to only charge them with “slap on the wrists” misdemeanors is a friggin insult.

In light of the recent foolishness re: the First Lady, I’m reposting a comment by Camille which is one of the most excellent summaries I’ve ever read of why she’s so admired by so many of us; just a really great comment for people who have the time to read a lengthy set of remarks:

    ****************************************
“–Would Black People Have Still Backed Obama if was married to a white woman, or in the case with the Dark Girls doc, if he had been married to a mixed race woman?—”

This goes well beyond colour and race — in my opinion–

Let’s just say that there wouldn’t have been a viable candidate Obama without this particular woman, Michelle Obama, by his side—

And contrary to contemptuous bellyaching and envious musings in some quarters, Michelle Obama is simply not and will never be interchangeable with “Jane any woman will do/could have been/done Doe”–

Five years later and after his historic ascent to the presidency, it’s far too easy to begin to forget just what it really took –

There’s been this rather bizarre, but quite amusing tendency and corrupt instinct by some – and even a few on the president’s team, to begin to try to revise stuff — to downplay the singular importance of this very unassuming but fiercely intelligent, wise, strong, warm, witty, grounded, principled, passionate, astute, dignified, elegant, unspoiled, unaffected, sensible, insightful, dedicated, loyal, disciplined, genuine, sincere, family-oriented and all around amazing woman with whom he has taken this journey together–

I’m not just talking the incredible sacrifices she made for him to live out his dreams and ambitions while she practically gave up all of hers to support his noble aspirations–

She was after all the one who even though 3 years younger than he, was already for all intents and purposes, on the fast track –practicing law at one of the most prestigious Law firms in the country after having made her way against far too many odds, and in what is still very much a story of triumph, from the SouthSide of Chicago to Princeton and then on to Harvard Law school–

He very lovingly and respectfully courted her; and she married him.

If she were looking for easy street or seeking an already made man – which he certainly wasn’t — or an immediately guaranteed future and someone with already actualized “potential” , I think she could have very easily focused on nabbing herself an already established man of which there were many in her newly emerged world– Because we all know too well that they as a couple, had to struggle and together stretch their scant resources in the early days–

She’d effectively put her own ambitions on ice, bore and terrifically raised their beautiful daughters – even while he was often away pursuing his ambitions—and together they made a humanly perfect family of which she was the principal architect — with her strength of character, strong values and deep respect and appreciation for the various levels and role of family and its many players – nuclear and extended; order, structure and a great sense of the importance of deeply assured security and love for the children they’d brought into the world together–

When they finally emerged as a couple and family on the national political stage, they thrilled not just Americans of all stripes — even those who wanted desperately to hate them couldn’t help the smiles that came to their faces when the saw this family— and the whole world fell completely and utterly in love with them as a unit–

The world watched as Michelle Obama — a very private woman widely known to be averse to politics for all its many awful, corrupt, cutthroat, ignoble and dehumanizing forms —stepped out — put herself out there to support and vouch for her husband in the most powerfully moving and compelling of ways — and as only she could possibly ever have–

Their connection is powerful and their synergy incredible— They complement each other in the most powerful and wonderful of ways—

And when he soared, she stepped back to let him shine –never resentful of his success and only proudly cheering him on, fiercely protective of him and intent on guarding his conscience, focus and brilliance and the motivating dreams for a greater good that’d they’d sacrificed so much of themselves and their family for—

So no, it was never really about the colour of Michelle Obama’s skin as much as it was about the content of her character–

And Barack Obama rose even more in the estimation of many when people met his wife—

There are a ton of black politicians out there — always has been–

And they’ve been married, unmarried, divorced—

Their wives have been black, white and other– and none of that has ever really made much of a difference–

They’ve run the gamut from Alma Powell to Michele Patterson–

But Michelle Obama is that incredibly rare political wife—

Let’s just say that had Cory Booker nabbed him a woman like Michelle Obama, he’d be much farther along in his political career now — and certainly on firmer footing–

That wonderful wife (Dannie?) would have cautioned him against prematurely declaring for a seat already occupied by a man who clearly only had so many days left in his political and other life anyway—

Much in the same way Michelle Obama, just a few years earlier, had asked her husband not to run against Bobby Rush — knowing much better than her husband’s political handlers at the time that even as much as Rush was not quite the political representative she and her husband had dreamed of, there were unique and peculiar circumstances in that particular instance that made it an unwise move — Michelle Obama understood too well the politics – and culture of her hometown—

She also understood the value of surrounding her husband with stable and wise friends — many of whom were her connections — brother’s friends and her friends —

Let it never be said that this spectacular woman did not help make the equally spectacular man we have in the oval office leading the world today—

And let it be clear that he is indeed there for having the good sense to marry this gloriously unique and rare kind of woman– The rare time I’ll ever probably agree wholeheartedly with Bill Clinton—

For this amazing couple, they are and will always be infinitely greater together than they’ll ever be apart—

And we can categorically declare that without question, there are very few women who could even begin to put up with even half of what Michelle Obama has had to put up with in her unyielding support of her husband— And certainly not with half the grace, dignity and discipline with which she has —

    I know I definitely couldn’t–

And it is indeed that rare woman who when asked, would only make her husband promise to quit smoking — in exchange for getting her blessing to run for political office–

Extracting a promise to stop smoking–?!

Whoever heard of any woman having complete veto power over the next big move in her family, and only briefly exercising it to ask that her guy do better for his health–

That was incredibly telling and pretty much sums up the heart and mind of this spectacular wife, mother, woman–

    • rikyrah

      bravo then…and bravo now….

All The Fake Democrats, Please Take A Seat!
by Russell Simmons Nov 21, 2013

I know where Republicans stand. They have voted 47 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act, so their stance is clear. If you get sick, you’re on your own. If you can’t pay for your medical expenses, declare bankruptcy. If you have a pre-existing condition, they’ll send you a get well card when you’re on your death-bed. Whatever President Obama stands for, they stand for the opposite. Even if it goes against every principle they have advocated for in the past, they would rather destroy our country, than see President Obama pass policy that is good for ALL Americans.

I thought I knew where most Democrats stood. I thought they stood on the side of the poor, the elderly, the students, the young people, the disenfranchised, the women, the middle class, the working class and all of those struggling to stay afloat during some very difficult economic times. But, then came a website. And the website had a lot of problems (that is probably an understatement). And some Democrats, 39 of them to be exact, couldn’t handle the hate, I mean heat, coming from the other side. So, their knees wobbled. Their brows glistened with sweat. Their stomachs growled. Their fear of losing their job over a website took over their every move. And please don’t tell me this about people whose healthcare was canceled…because that healthcare is predatory and it is unconscionable that we would allow anyone in this country to own such policies.

I run websites. I have built websites. I certainly understand the complications of servers and load times and 404 errors. THIS CAN ALL BE FIXED! And it will be fixed. But what cannot be fixed, is the fact that for over 100 years we have tried to reform our healthcare system, and EVERY President before Barack Obama FAILED! Yes, we initially wanted single payer, and we had to compromise back in 2009 for the Affordable Care Act. But, it is a damn good piece of legislation that has already saved hundreds of thousands, if not millions of lives. So, let us not give up now. (**addendum: After getting attacked by the right wing blogs yesterday for my comments, let me remind them that Obamacare did not start with the website on October 1st. It started when it was passed in 2009. And since that time, 2.5 MILLION more young people have health insurance because they can stay on their parent’s plan until they are 26. And since 2010, health insurance companies could no longer deny health insurance to children because of a pre-existing condition. That has been the law before the website even launched.)

Obama Administration To Delay 2015 Obamacare Enrollment

The Obama administration will postpone the start of Obamacare enrollment for 2015 coverage from Oct. 15, 2014, to Nov. 15, 2014, a Department of Health and Human Services official confirmed to TPM. “This change is good news for consumers, who will have more time to learn about plans before enrolling and an open enrollment period that’s a week longer,” the official told TPM in an email.

The end of the 2015 enrollment period will also be extended from Dec. 7, 2014, to Jan. 15, 2015.[....] Administration officials told TPM that the delay was not politically motivated, but said that a delay of the filing period required a postponement of the enrollment period.

I like it. Keep the rollout going now, adding more time
      to open enrollment next year.

Boehner Whines About Receiving Excellent Health Insurance the Same Day He Applies

[....] The fact is, before the end of the day, Boehner found himself enrolled in a health care plan. It didn’t take days or weeks, like it used to when you had to submit your application to an insurance company and wait for them to decide if you were approved. He didn’t have to take a physical. He didn’t have to submit his health history. He didn’t have to sweat out the application process and hope that he got the plan he signed up for or wonder if he’d get denied altogether due to pre-existing conditions.

Nope. He had to wait a few hours and by the end of the day, he was enrolled in a brand new health care plan. One that he was able to choose from a multitude of options. Interestingly, he didn’t tweet or blog or release a press statement about the price of his new health care plan or what it covers. Instead, he just whined about how ‘frustrated’ he was with his website experience and provided us with these pictures showing the grueling process.[....]

It took him not even half-a-day to get himself covered under a
top-flight insurance policy. How will he ever recover from such a
horrendous experience? Seriously, as far as political stunts go, this
    one was pretty pathetic.[….

Levitating Train Between DC And NYC Would Leave The Rest Of America Behind

[....] The New York Times reported Monday that Japan, desperate to export its magnetic-levitation (maglev) technology, has offered to pay for 40 miles of a 300-mile per hour maglev train from Washington, DC to Baltimore, a route that would conveniently give lawmakers an eight-minute trip to the Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

A mix of public and private funds raised by The Northeast Maglev company (TNEM) would be used to build the rest of the route to New York. If lawmakers bite, residents of the Northeast Corridor could someday zip between Washington and New York in an hour flat.[....]

I want to take a levitating train back and forth to Nashville!!!
C’mon Japan; we have Nissan down here. Good PR, you
      know.

    • rikyrah

don’t need a levitating train. I would be happy with Japan-type bullet trains.

      • creolechild

Actually, they’re one in the same. Levitating trains is just another term used to describe the Japanese bullet train mentioned in the article.
