The Voodoo Macbeth is a common nickname[1] for the Federal Theatre Project’s 1936 New York production of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, featuring an all-African American cast directed by Orson Welles. The production relocated the setting of the play from Scotland to a fictional Caribbean island based on Haiti, and acquired its nickname due to its use of voodoo imagery in place of the witchcraft in the original play.[2] A box-office sensation, the production is regarded as a landmark theatrical event for several reasons: its innovative interpretation of the play, its success in promoting African-American theatre, and its role in securing the reputation of its 20-year-old director.

The Works Project Administration was an attempt at an economic stimulus during the Great Depression, under its aegis was Federal Project Number One responsible for generating jobs in the arts for which the Federal Theater Project was created. At the lobbying of civil rights activists[citation needed] a Negro Theater Unit was created. It was split into two halves, the “Contemporary Branch” to create theatre on contemporary black issues, and the “Classic Branch”, to perform classic drama.[3] The aim was to provide a point of entry into the theatre workforce for black actors and stagehands, and to raise community pride by performing classic plays without reference to the colour of the actors.[4]

Concept

Shakespeare’s play is about the downfall of a usurper in medieval Scotland, who is encouraged in his actions by three witches. The central idea behind Welles’s production was to perform the text straight, but to use costumes and sets that alluded to Haiti in the 19th century, specifically during the reign of the slave-turned-emperor Henri Christophe.[5] Although the main reason for this choice was that it was an appropriate setting for an all-black cast, Welles felt that it also enhanced the play’s realism: he thought the production’s popularity was partly due to the fact that the idea of voodoo was more credible to a contemporary audience than was medieval witchcraft.[6]

In many productions, the character of Hecate, the Queen of the Witches, is often cut. Instead, Welles turned the character into a pivotal figure. Performed by Eric Burroughs as a huge man with a bullwhip,[7] Hecate ended the play with the line “The charm’s wound up”, transferred from Act 1.[8] Welles’s 1948 film version of Macbeth, in which Hecate does not appear, also ends with this line.

The production used a single, unchanging set of a castle in a jungle. The backdrops featured stylized palm trees and skeleton imagery.[9]

It is not certain whether the production removed references to Scotland from the text. Welles’s promptbook keeps them intact, but in the surviving film record of the production’s climax, the line “Hail, King of Scotland” is truncated to “Hail, King”.[10]

Production

The leadership roles in the Negro Theater Unit were all white. John Houseman, the director of the NTP, invited the young white director Orson Welles to direct a production of Macbeth.[11] Welles was only 20, but was already a major radio star, and seized the opportunity to prove himself as a promising director.[12] The designer was Nat Karson.[13] The lighting was created by Abe Feder, one of the first full-time lighting designers.[14] Feder had a difficult relationship with Welles, whom he believed was too young and ignorant of the practicalities of theatre; he continued to hold this opinion when interviewed decades later.[15]

Since the production’s hierarchy was inherently racist, Welles also faced some difficulties in asserting authority with the black cast and crew, who were “not accustomed to being bossed around by preppy young whites”.[8] However, Welles won over the cast with his youthful energy and his warmth.[8] Black cast and crew members interviewed decades later said that they felt included in the creative process.[3] Welles, who was wealthy from his radio work, pleased everyone by cramming the rehearsal space with food and drink.[16]

The production opened at the Lafayette Theatre in Harlem. It then had a brief run on Broadway at the Adelphi Theatre, before touring local high schools.[17] It then toured the country, including performances in Bridgeport, Hartford, Dallas, Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and finally returning to New York at the Majestic Theatre in Brooklyn (October 4–17).[18] A few minutes of the production can be seen in the 1937 film We Work Again, a U.S. government documentary about the work projects.[19] The film, which is now in the public domain, can be viewed online.[20] The production was invited to London, but Welles declined, because he was trying to secure his career in New York.[21]

Cast

The entire cast and crew numbered over one hundred people, but only five of them were professional actors.[22] Welles cast Jack Carter as Macbeth and Edna Thomas as Lady Macbeth. Both were light-skinned, and wore dark makeup in order to avoid looking different from the rest of the cast.[23] Thomas played Lady Macbeth as a mother figure to Macbeth.[24] Canada Lee played Banquo.[7] Lee had met Welles prior to his involvement with the production, at a performance of Stevedore. The audience had been whipped into a frenzied shouting match, and Lee rescued Welles from being attacked by another audience member wielding a knife.[25]

Carter was a former criminal and an alcoholic, but Welles cast him despite being warned of his habit of disappearing for weeks on binges. Carter understood the importance of the production to his career, and kept his drinking under control during the Harlem run.[26] Welles expended a great deal of time on helping Carter channel his adrenalin into a solid performance.[27] The two men bonded, and would hit the nightspots of Harlem together after rehearsals.[28] However, his behavior became so problematic that he had to be replaced, by the performer of MacDuff, Maurice Ellis, during the show’s Broadway run (Ellis’s performance is the one recorded on film).[23] Welles would later claim to have played Macbeth himself in blackface, after Ellis fell ill one night on tour in Indianapolis.

There were few professional African-American actors available and many of the cast members had never acted in Shakespeare before. Welles believed, however, that they showed a better understanding of the rhythm of the iambic pentameter than many professionals.[24]

Welles also hired a team of African drummers, some of whom were knowledgeable about voodoo practices, to accompany the witch’s speeches with drumbeats.[29] They were led by Sierra Leonean drummer Asadata Dafora.[22]

Responses

Before the production opened, the Harlem Communists tried to agitate the community against the project, wrongly believing that Welles had cast black actors in order to create a comic or burlesque version of Shakespeare. The theatre was picketed throughout rehearsals. One man attempted to slash Welles’s face with a razor, but Canada Lee, a former boxer, stopped him.[30]

According to Welles, the anger was suddenly replaced “for no reason at all” by widespread excitement and pride in the community as the opening night approached.[31] The “Voodoo Macbeth” defied all expectations, becoming a box-office sensation. Seventh Avenue had to be closed for 10 blocks on either side of the theatre and the opening night played to a packed house, and continued to do so for nine weeks.[32]

Most reviewers, including those from the New York Times and the New York Daily News loved the production, praising its energy and excitement. However, Carter was criticized for poor verse delivery, and for seeming more interested in displaying his physique than acting. One reviewer, Percy Hammond of the Herald Tribune, was negative about the entire cast, accusing the actors of being inaudible and timid. In response, one of the African drummers created a voodoo doll of Hammond, stuck pins in it, and encouraged Welles to take responsibility for any torments Hammond suffered as a result. Welles says he found this amusing, until Hammond died shortly afterward.[33]

Brady sells SoCal mansion to Dr. Dre for $40M

Rap legend Dr. Dre is the new owner of Tom Brady’s former home.

The sale of the Brentwood, Calif., mansion for $40 million, which was first reported in May, became official Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The New England Patriots quarterback and his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, purchased the property for $11.75 million in 2008 and built the 18,298-square-foot home — which includes such amenities as a gym, a sauna, a pool and seven fireplaces — over the ensuing four years

Brady and Bundchen put the house on the market for an asking price of $50 million in March with the intention of living in the Boston area full-time.

Jobs Report: U.S. Economy Added 217K Jobs In May, Unemployment Remains Unchanged At 6.3%
    6/06/2014 @ 8:42AM

Jobs numbers released by The Bureau of Labor Statistics Friday morning were roughly in line with what economists were predicting, leading the markets to pick up steam in pre-market trading.

Non-farm payrolls added 217,000 jobs in May, a hair lower than the 218,000 that economists were expecting. The unemployment rate, which is drawn from a different survey of households, remained unchanged at 6.3% and is 0.1% better than the 6.4% consensus.

The labor force participation rate also remained unchanged from the 62.8% rate reported for April, the lowest rate in decades. The BLS said Friday that the participation rate has shown no clear trend since this past October but is down by 0.6% over the year.

Black soldiers on D-Day: Invisible but present- –
    – —–When Allies hit the beaches of Normandy 70 years ago today, there were black soldiers.
The US Army’s assault force, however, was still segregated.

In fact, the US First Army Omaha Beach assault team had less than 500 blacks out of 29,714 troops.

The black soldiers made up one section of the 3275th Quartermaster Service Company and less than one battery of the 320th Anti-aircraft Balloon Battalion. The balloons they deployed were meant to protect those storming the beach from low-flying strafing aircraft.

The iconic pictures of those silver barrage balloons floating over
Omaha and Utah beaches were defacto flags marking the presence of African-Americans on D-Day.

Of the 31,912 U.S. troops landing on Utah Beach, approximately 1,200 were black and included troops of the remaining battery of the 320th Balloon Battalion, the 582nd Engineer Dump Truck Company, the 385th Quartermaster Truck Company, and the 490th Port Battalion with its 226th, 227th, 228th, and 229th Port Companies.

I’ve read about a lot of senior pranks including spray painting on walls and such and the kids were not charged with a felony. This is ridiculous. Make them clean it up and do community service all summer, but felony criminal charges is too much. They are so quick to throw black kids in the criminal justice system.

    • Town

If the white kids on the other side of town had done this they would’ve been charged with misdeameanors and had community service. It would’ve been dismissed as a prank by the public. 12 black kids pull off a senior prank, they need to be charged with felonies, thrown in jail, barred from graduating and because 12 kids did this, the black kids as a collective on that side of the county don’t deserve a new school*.

*The side of the county the kids live on haven’t had a new high school in at least 50 years. The white side of the county has built at least 2 brand new high schools. In fact, one of the new high schools on that side of the county was supposed to get a new state of the art field house costing millions, while a middle school on the black side of the county was literally falling down. After public protest the field house was cancelled and the $ diverted to the falling down middle school.

    —————————
Joining President Barack Obama in France to mark the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy, National Security Advisor Susan Ricewas cornered by CNN reporter Jim Acosta and asked to explain her claim that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl served with “honor and distinction.” Rice defended her remarks and scolded the press for rushing to judgment about Bergdahl before he has had the opportunity to explain his side of the story.

In a Sunday appearance on ABC’s This Week, Rice insisted that Bergdahl “served the United States with honor and distinction.”

“I realize there has been a lot of discussion and controversy around this,” Rice said of her remarks from Sunday. “What I was referring to is the fact that this was a young man who volunteered to serve his country in uniform at a time of war. That in itself is a very honorable thing.”

“But ‘honor and distinction?’” Acosta asked.

“Jim, really,” Rice replied. “This is a young man whose circumstances we are still going to learn about.”

“He is, as all Americans, innocent until proven guilty,” she continued. “He is now being tried in the court of public opinion after having gone through enormously traumatic five years of captivity. His parents, the same.”

        • Aquagranny911

When we lived in Mississippi I worked in a hospital as a mental health counselor with stroke patients. I know what your daughter is saying but my experience has helped me be patient & supportive with Sis. I joke a lot because it keeps me somewhat sane, lol.

    – – – – — -New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is pushing for President Obama’s Presidential Library and Museum to be located in the Big Apple, challenging Chicago, the presumed front-runner.

“I think Columbia University is a perfect place for President Obama’s museum,” de Blasio told reporters, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“I’m not sure if they’re going to have one facility or multiple facilities,
but I hope that we get at least one piece if they do break it up into

The mayor said he told the Obama team that New York wants to host the library and is “excited about the idea.”

Nope. The library should be in Chicago.

      • Alma98

Yep, as much as I like Hawaii it’s too expensive for most people. So Chicago is the perfect place for it, you could drive or fly there.

Should be in Chicago, in Bronzeville, on the spot where the former Michael Reese Hospital used to be.
        1. They’ve already taken the land. (for the ill-fated bid for the Olympics)
        2. No need for any more Black people to lose their homes.
        3. Easily accessible by both car, bus and ‘EL’ train.
        4. Easy stop for the tour buses.
        5. WIll not enable the University of Chicago to kick anymore Black people off their property.

    • Alma98

Why would it be in NY? Chicago is where it should be, that way more people will get to visit.

      Enjoy the graduation ceremony GLH!

The President could have the main facility in Chicago, and seperate smaller facilities in Hawaii and New York.

PBO’s op-ed in Indian Country Today:

On My Upcoming Trip to Indian Country

    President Barack Obama

Six years ago, I made my first trip to Indian country. I visited the Crow Nation in Montana—an experience I’ll never forget. I left with a new Crow name, an adoptive Crow family, and an even stronger commitment to build a future that honors old traditions and welcomes every Native American into the American Dream.

Next week, I’ll return to Indian country, when Michelle and I visit the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in Cannonball, North Dakota. We’re eager to visit this reservation, which holds a special place in American history as the home of Chief Sitting Bull. And while we’re there, I’ll announce the next steps my Administration will take to support jobs, education, and self-determination in Indian country.

As president, I’ve worked closely with tribal leaders, and I’ve benefited greatly from their knowledge and guidance. That’s why I created the White House Council on Native American Affairs—to make sure that kind of partnership is happening across the federal government. And every year, I host the White House Tribal Nations Conference, where leaders from every federally recognized tribe are invited to meet with members of my Administration. Today, honoring the nation-to-nation relationship with Indian country isn’t the exception; it’s the rule. And we have a lot to show for it.

Private Jobs Have Recovered. Government Jobs Still Lag.
By DAVID LEONHARDT June 6, 2014

The United States economy has finally exceeded its pre-recession employment peak, as many analysts of today’s jobs report have noted. But that milestone obscures two very different stories — in the private and public sectors. The public sector — federal, state and local government — still isn’t close to returning to its pre-recession employment levels.

Private-sector employment first exceeded its pre-recession jobs peak a few months ago, in March. Last month, the (nonfarm) private sector included 0.5 percent more jobs than in December 2007, when the recession began. The public sector remains well below its employment peak.

In fact, public-sector employment has barely begun to recover. It reached a recent low of 21.83 million jobs in December and now has 21.87 jobs. Many state and local governments cut jobs sharply to deal with budget deficits during the recession. The federal government also employs somewhat fewer people than it did in December 2007.

Florida Girl, 8, Makes $10,000 in Booming Bakery Business

The passionate young entrepreneur donates a portion of her proceeds to raising dyslexia awareness.
    By Patrice Peck
    Posted: 06/05/2014 04:30 PM EDT

Between attending school, participating in extracurricular activities and completing her chores, 8-year-old Taylor Moxey, of Miami, has managed to run a successful baking business out of her parents’ home kitchen.

“I think baking is mostly my passion,” she told Today. “You get to take your recipe and different people’s recipes and add different things to them.”

Taylor’s Cookies and Cupcakes was born out of a simple idea proposed by her parents during a Sunday trip to Target. When her parents suggested that she come up with a way to raise money for a toy she had asked for, a cookie and brownie church sale came to Taylor’s mind. She went to work after receiving a $40 loan from her father, Vernon Moxey, and signing a business agreement drafted on a napkin.

“Honestly, I didn’t think she would make $40 back,” her father told Today.

Not only did Taylor reimburse the loan that same Sunday, but her baking skills soon advanced her from church bake sales to first place at a local cornbread competition in which she won first place over several adults. Her reputation as one of the area’s top bakers skyrocketed thanks to her big win, as well as the accompanying billboard.

Whoopi Goldberg: ‘N–ger’ Doesn’t Mean Anything in Canada

You can now add Whoopi Goldberg to the long list of black celebrities who’ve come to Justin Bieber’s defense for using the n-word. The View co-host adamantly excused Bieber’s use of the word, only because he’s Canadian.

“A video has surfaced, or resurfaced, of a 15-year-old Bieber telling
a racist joke, and everybody’s up in arms. He’s issued an apology

The Rush to Demonize Sgt. Bergdahl
By THE EDITORIAL BOARD JUNE 5, 2014

Four months ago, Senator John McCain said he would support the exchange of five hard-core Taliban leaders for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. “I would support,” he told CNN. “Obviously I’d have to know the details, but I would support ways of bringing him home and if exchange was one of them I think that would be something I think we should seriously consider.”

But the instant the Obama administration actually made that trade, Mr. McCain, as he has so often in the past, switched positions for maximum political advantage. “I would not have made this deal,” he said a few days ago. Suddenly the prisoner exchange is “troubling” and “poses a great threat” to service members. Hearings must be held, he said, and sharp questions asked.

This hypocrisy now pervades the Republican Party and the conservative movement, and has even infected several fearful Democrats. When they could use Sergeant Bergdahl’s captivity as a cudgel against the administration, they eagerly did so, loudly and in great numbers. And the moment they could use his release to make President Obama look weak on terrorism or simply incompetent, they reversed direction without a moment’s hesitation to jump aboard the new bandwagon.

      let folks be clear:
the deal that got Bergdahl released in 2014.
was the one offered – VER BATIM —–in 2012.
And that deal was released by the Media, which killed the deal.
So, ANYBODY who says they didn’t know about the deal
      Is phucking LYING.

PBS claims FCC wants to shrink its reach
By Julian Hattem – 06/06/14 12:22 PM EDT

Public broadcasters are warning that some people could lose access to “Sesame Street,” “NewsHour” and other educational shows.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) denied the broadcasters’ request to ensure that every community has access to the free public TV after it redistributes the nation’s airwaves, according to the broadcasters.

“We believe the Commission’s rejection of this long-standing policy is a grievous error that risks breaking faith with the nation’s commitment to universal service for non-commercial educational television,” the heads of PBS, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Association of Public Television Stations said in a statement.

The chiefs said they had “profound disappointment” in the decision, which rejects “one of public television’s most important policy goals” in the spectrum auction process.

Under the Public Broadcasting Act, stations like PBS are supposed to reach every American in the country. For decades, the FCC has reserved chunks of the spectrum for non-commercial educational TV, but the public broadcasters accused it of ending that pattern with its new auction.

Obamacare War Ends With a Whimper

This is the way the Obamacare war ends—not with a bang, but a whimper.

Anti-Obamacare bills in the House have gotten tamer lately—some of them look an awful lot like fixing obvious problems with the law, something conservatives once swore they’d never do. There are fewer big-ticket hearings, and even those are often poorly attended. Anyone who’s been around Capitol Hill and health care for the past four years can see it—the anti-Obamacare fire just isn’t burning as hot as it used to.

In part, any fire dies down over five years. But the temperature on the right also got a lot lower after 8 million people signed up for coverage through the health care law’s exchanges.

The law is unpopular, and its critics feel more strongly than its supporters. But with public opinion locked in place for months, ‘Obamacare’ has become almost a party-ID question or a buzzword, rather than a dynamic issue.
