Friday Open Thread: Black/African Nationalists and Revolutionaries

It’s Friday, POU Family! It’s the end of a work week and the start of the weekend.

maulana-karenga-600x399

Maulana Ndabezitha Karenga (born Ronald McKinley Everett on July 14, 1941) is an African-American professor of Africana Studies, activist and author, best known as the creator of the pan-African and African-American holiday of Kwanzaa. Karenga was a major figure in the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s and co-founded with Hakim Jamal the black nationalism and social change organization US.

Ron Everett was born in Parsonsburg, Maryland, the fourteenth child and seventh son in the family. His father was a tenant farmer and Baptist minister who employed the family to work fields under an effective sharecropping arrangement. Everett moved to Los Angeles in 1959, joining his older brother who was a teacher there, and attended Los Angeles City College (LACC). He became active with civil rights organizations CORE andSNCC, took an interest in African studies, and was elected as LACC’s first African-American student president. After earning his associate degree, he matriculated at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and earned BA and MA degrees in political science.

He studied Swahili, Arabic and other African-related subjects. Among his influences at UCLA were Jamaican anthropologist and Negritudist Councill Taylor who contested the Eurocentric view of alien cultures as primitive. During this period he took the name Karenga (Swahili for “keeper of tradition”) and the title Maulana (Swahili-Arabic for “master teacher”). While pursuing his doctorate at UCLA, he taught African culture classes for local African-Americans and joined a study group called the Circle of Seven.

The Watts Riots broke out as Karenga was a year into his doctoral studies. Karenga and the Circle of Seven established a community organization in the aftermath called US (meaning “Us black people”). The organization joined in several community revival programs and was featured in press reports. Karenga cited Malcolm X’s Afro-American Unity program as an influence on the US organization’s work:

Malcolm was the major African American thinker that influenced me in terms of nationalism and Pan-Africanism. As you know, towards the end, when Malcolm is expanding his concept of Islam, and of nationalism, he stresses Pan-Africanism in a particular way. And he argues that, and this is where we have the whole idea that cultural revolution and the need for revolution, he argues that we need a cultural revolution, he argues that we must return to Africa culturally and spiritually, even if we can’t go physically. And so that’s a tremendous impact on US.

As racial disturbances spread across the country, Karenga appeared at a series of black power conferences, joining other groups in urging the establishment of a separate political structure for African-Americans.

US became a target of the FBI’s COINTELPRO and was put on a series of lists describing it as dangerous, revolutionary and committed to armed struggle in the Black Power Movement. US developed a youth component with para-military aspects called the Simba Wachanga which advocated and practiced community self-defense and service to the masses.

Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966 to be the first pan-African holiday. He said his goal was to “give Blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and give Blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society.” It is inspired by African “first fruit” traditions, and the name is derived from the name for the Swahili first fruit celebration, “matunda ya kwanza.”  The rituals of the holiday promote African traditions and Nguzo Saba, the “seven principles of African Heritage” that Karenga described as “a communitarian African philosophy”:

  • Umoja (unity)—To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
  • Kujichagulia (self-determination)—To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.
  • Ujima (collective work and responsibility)—To build and maintain our community together and make our brother’s and sister’s problems our problems and to solve them together.
  • Ujamaa (cooperative economics)—To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together.
  • Nia (purpose)—To make our collective vocation the building and development of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  • Kuumba (creativity)—To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  • Imani (faith)—To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.

US engaged in violent competition with the Black Panther Party in their claim to be a revolutionary vanguard. This heightened level of conflict eventually led to a shoot-out at UCLA in 1969 in which two Panthers were killed and a Simba was shot in the back. Following the UCLA shootout, Panthers and US members carried out a series of retaliatory shootings that resulted in at least two more murders of Panthers.

The FBI attempted to aggravate the conflict. Tactics used to foment and aggravate conflict between US and the Panthers included poison-pen letters, defamatory cartoons, agents provocateurs, and creating suspicion of members of each organization as agents.

In 1971, Karenga was sentenced to one to ten years in prison on counts of felonious assault and false imprisonment. One of the victims gave testimony of how Karenga and other men tortured her and another woman. The woman described having been stripped and beaten with an electrical cord. Karenga’s estranged wife, Brenda Lorraine Karenga, testified that she sat on the other woman’s stomach while another man forced water into her mouth through a hose.

A May 14, 1971, article in the Los Angeles Times described the testimony of one of the women:

“Deborah Jones, who once was given the Swahili title of an African queen, said she and Gail Davis were whipped with an electrical cord and beaten with a karate baton after being ordered to remove their clothes. She testified that a hot soldering iron was placed in Miss Davis’ mouth and placed against Miss Davis’ face and that one of her own big toes was tightened in a vise. Karenga, head of US, also put detergent and running hoses in their mouths, she said. They also were hit on the heads with toasters.”

Jones and Brenda Karenga testified that Karenga believed the women were conspiring to poison him, which Davis has attributed to a combination of ongoing police pressure and his own drug abuse.

Karenga denied any involvement in the torture, and argued that the prosecution was political in nature. He was imprisoned at the California Men’s Colony, where he studied and wrote on feminism, Pan-Africanism and other subjects. The US organization fell into disarray during his absence and was disbanded in 1974. After he petitioned several black state officials to support his parole on fair sentencing grounds, it was granted in 1975.

After his parole Karenga re-established the US organization under a new structure. He was awarded his first PhD in 1976 from United States International University (now known as Alliant International University) for a 170-page dissertation entitled “Afro-American Nationalism: Social Strategy and Struggle for Community”. Later in his career, in 1994, he was awarded a second Ph.D., in social ethics, from the University of Southern California.

Karenga is the Chair of the Africana Studies Department at California State University, Long Beach. He is the director of the Kawaida Institute for Pan African Studies and the author of several books, including his “Introduction to Black Studies”, a comprehensive Black/African Studies textbook now in its fourth edition. He is also known for having co-hosted, in 1984, a conference that gave rise to the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations, and in 1995, he sat on the organizing committee and authored the mission statement of the Million Man March.

Louisiana has $1.5 billion in unspent recovery aid for Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustave, Ike
The Associated Press on January 02, 2014 at 10:16 AM, updated January 02, 2014 at 11:47 AM

Louisiana has yet to spend $1.5 billion of federal disaster recovery aid provided by Congress after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ikeravaged the state in 2005 and 2008.The flexible block grant rebuilding and strengthening money remains set aside for infrastructure repairs, home rebuilding, school reconstruction and business assistance. Nearly all of it is tied to specific projects, as efforts to navigate the bureaucratic hurdles of recovery stretch over years.

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s administration has defended the pace of spending, saying the Katrina recovery alone was one of the largest disaster rebuilding efforts in the nation’s history.

“Recovery takes time,” said Pat Forbes, Jindal’s director for disaster recovery work. “We are constantly reviewing other unmet recovery needs for where funds could go.”

Millions remain in unused housing assistance money allocated to the Road Home program created after the back-to-back blows of Katrina and Rita in 2005. A slice of money set aside to rebuild rental housing is not yet spent.

    more here: http://www.nola.com/katrina/index.ssf/2014/01/louisiana_has_15_billion_in_un.html

    • jds09

      Jindal is incompetent.

    • isonprize

That’s a damn shame. 1.5 billion. BILLION. DAMN.

    • creolechild

Homeowners have been advocating for the funds to be released for the Road Home program since 2005. The purpose of slow-walking funds for the Road Home program is to discourage rebuilding efforts in predominantly black communities where individuals are struggling to meet new building codes implemented after Katrina–such as raising building foundations X number of feet to deter flood and water damage. These communities are in close proximity to the French Quarter and many of its residents are employed in sevice industry jobs. The new codes make sense but at the same time creates hardships for families that are determined to rebuild but aren’t able to come up with the out-of-pocket expenses to comply with the new regulations. (In addition many properties were underinsured or some weren’t insured at all.)

Not dispensing the funds is a way to get people to give up, sell their land, and move out of the area. Because unlike many other states, when you own a home in Louisiana nine times out of ten you also own the land it’s built on. And developers descended on NOLA in droves after Katrina with the express purpose of obtaining this land that’s been black-owned for GENERATIONS so they can build hotels, businesses, and high-priced housing in its place to attract the young and affluent 2520s from other parts of the country. They haven’t been able to get the land, YET, but I read last week that NOLA has become a top destination for the aforementioned group so the objective of changing the face of NOLA is working to some degree but not like expected in those particular areas.

On the other hand, by not allocating rental assistance it prevents landlords from rebuilding and/or renovating the housing stock which creates a shortage of housing and increases rent prices so that families who were relocated out-of-state pre-Katrina won’t be able to come back any time soon–if at all–because they simply can’t afford to.

      • isonprize

Thanks for breaking it down, Creolechild. Thank you VERY much.

      • conlakappa

Interesting though I don’t understand the distinction about owning the land it’s built on in other jurisdictions. We own the house and the plot of land it’s on.

Kelly: Assemblyman says order for GWB traffic tie-up came from outside Port Authority
LAST UPDATED: THURSDAY JANUARY 2, 2014, 5:06 PM
    By MIKE KELLY

The George Washington Bridge lane closures that led to paralyzing gridlock in Fort Lee this past September were ordered by someone outside the Port Authority and possibly for “an improper motive,” said the state lawmaker leading the investigation into whether the closings were politically motivated.

“There are documents that we’ve received that would indicate that there was somebody else who initiated this,” said Assemblyman John Wisniewski. “There are words that are used that would imply an improper motive.”

Wisniewski, who has scheduled more hearings next week in Trenton on the controversy in his role as chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee, declined to say who those other officials might be or what their motives were.

But he left little doubt that he planned to take a closer look at Governor Christie and his staff of political operatives. The governor jointly steers the Port Authority with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, appointing its top executives and commissioners.

Wal-Mart to HP Reap Worker Political Donations Through Charities

U.S. companies, forbidden to give money directly to political action committees, are taking advantage of controversial federal rules allowing them to ask employees to do it for them in exchange for matching charitable donations.

It’s legal and gives businesses from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to Coca-Cola (KO) Co. to Hewlett-Packard Co. a way to fund their PACs, which direct money to political candidates. The matching contributions provide an incentive for employees, most of them managers, to contribute to the PAC.

The practice was approved by the Federal Election Commission in the late 1980s and has become commonplace at a time when companies face increasing scrutiny over their political donations. The FEC split over the legality of matching PAC contributions with charitable donations at least seven times between 1994 and 2009.

In an interview, former FEC chairman Scott Thomas said the exchange flouts the spirit of campaign-finance laws, which forbid companies from reimbursing for donations, including through a bonus or “other form of direct or indirect compensation.”

Regulator of Wall Street Loses Its Hard-Charging Chairman

    BY BEN PROTESS

Gary Gensler squeezed into a Washington auditorium last month, mingling with the 300 guests at his farewell party and basking in the attention as a who’s who of finance recounted his campaign to rein in Wall Street risk-taking.

Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew, for one, described the chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as one of the leading reformers after the financial crisis, according to people who attended the event. Mark Wetjen, a commissioner at the agency who occasionally sparred with Mr. Gensler, remarked that a mutual friend was fond of calling him “a force of nature,” a depiction that elicited knowing nods from a crowd that included Ben S. Bernanke, the departing head of the Federal Reserve, and Jeffrey C. Sprecher, whose company owns the New York Stock Exchange.

But even as Mr. Gensler’s aggressive streak thrust the once-backwater agency into the front lines of reform, it also maddened colleagues and complicated his legacy. And now that his tenure is ending on Friday, the agency has reached an inflection point, prompting Wall Street to hope for a friendlier regulator.

President Obama has appointed Timothy G. Massad, a Treasury Department official with a blank slate for a regulatory agenda, as Mr. Gensler’s successor.

Aside from their slender frames and retreating hairlines, Mr. Massad and Mr. Gensler might bear little resemblance. While Mr. Gensler had his finger on every button, Mr. Massad could take a more conciliatory stance. Mr. Massad, who oversaw the winding down of the bank bailouts, will also face renewed pressure to appease lobbyists and congressional Republicans.

“There’s no question Wall Street sees an opening to roll back reform,” said Dennis M. Kelleher, the head of Better Markets, an advocacy group. “But Massad is no fool; he knows he’s going to be judged by the very high standards set by Gary Gensler.”

At the time of Mr. Massad’s appointment, Mr. Lew praised him as “determined to pursue reform that safeguards and advances the interests of hard-working Americans.”

President Obama added, “I have every confidence that he is the right man to lead an agency designed to prevent future crises.”

    – - -Raising The Minimum Wage To $10.10 Could Lift Nearly 5 Million Out Of Poverty
    – - –Raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour could lift about 4.6 million people out of poverty directly, according to a new study from economist Arindrajit Dube.
Longer-term effects could reduce the number of people living below the poverty line by 6.8 million.

That wage level “would reduce the poverty rate among Americans
between the ages of 18 and 64 by as much as 1.7 percentage points,” Jillian Berman explains in the Huffington Post.
Poverty increased by 3.4 percent during the recession, a rate that has not improved since, but a $10.10 wage would erase more than half of that uptick. Dube’s findings come from an analysis of 23 years of data on minimum wage increases as well as a review of previous findings.

Others have found similar numbers for how many could be brought above the federal poverty line by a higher wage: ROC United, a group focused on better working conditions for restaurant workers, found that a $10.10 wage would lift nearly 6 million people out of poverty.

    — -A Michigan doctor who disappeared nearly a month ago had been stalking a well-known local gospel singer, and even referred to him as her ‘husband’, a local newspaper reports.

Dr Teleka Patrick, 30, had a personal protection order filed against her by pastor and gospel singer Marvin Sapp, 46, who said Dr Patrick had visited his home and contacted his young children to get close to him.
It is also indicated in the PPO that Dr Patrick, who started her residency at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan last year, moved to the area from California because of Pastor Sapp.

Senate Conservatives Fund Already Spent Nearly $1 Million To Unseat McConnell
    JANUARY 3, 2014, 11:42 AM EST581

The Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF) has already invested nearly $1 million of its $2 million haul in Matt Bevin, the Republican challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in the Senate primary.

The group announced Friday that it had reached its goal of raising $2 million to boost its preferred Senate candidates. Of that $2 million, $985,994 went to Bevin. Mississippi State Sen. Chris McDaniel (R-KY) got the most money next with $515, 993. McDaniel is challenging Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS).

Judge Rules Exxon Must Face Criminal Charges Over 50,000 Gallon Fracking Waste Spill

[....] Following a preliminary hearing, Magisterial District Judge James G. Carn decided that all eight charges against Exxon — including violations of both the state Clean Streams Law and the Solid Waste Management Act — will be “held for court,” meaning there is enough evidence to take the fossil fuel giant to trial over felony offenses.

Pennsylvania’s Attorney General filed criminal charges back in September, claiming Exxon had removed a plug from a wastewater tank, leading to 57,000 gallons of contaminated water spilling into the soil. The Exxon subsidiary had contested the criminal charges, claiming there was “no lasting environmental impact,” and that the charges could “discourage good environmental practices” from guilty companies. Utah Prepares To Crack Down On Payday Lenders

[....] The two laws approach the state’s payday lending problem from both the consumer side and the corporate side. The law aimed at borrowers restricts anyone from having more than two payday loans outstanding at any time and sets caps on both the number (10 per year) and the volume (no more than 25 percent of the borrower’s monthly income at any given time) of the loans that a resident can take out.

The law aimed at businesses would set up a database to track all outstanding payday loans in the state — something that Alabama lawmakers have tried, only to have lenders in their state sue to keep their business practices in the shadows.[....]

Afternoon everybody. Is it word that I still haven’t heard back from the HR department at that place I went to interview for?

I know patience is a vietue, but still. I only ask because my current boss had decoded to put me to be the next student preceptor. The student will be here for 5 weeks starting Monday. I don’t mind doing it but I feel bad saying no because if not for the possible job offer I’d be happy to work with a student. But I also feel bad saying yes because ok if I do hear from HR and the offer is good then I will not be here yo finish the preceptorship.

BTB, even though it’s been holiday the last 2 weeks. The holiday had been in mid of week so offices, especially hospital offices were/are open. I’m just saying that a courtesy call would be nice.

Anyway, I’m just being analysis about it I guess. I’m going back to work now, my break is over.

    • http://www.dlancystreet.com reginahny

You are professional and thoughtful to have those concerns, but I think you really have to look out for yourself when it comes to work life — as it is such a big part of life. So don’t worry (I know easy to say) about either possibility — it’s your choice and you worked to have that choice. I think even though the holidays had work days snuggled around them, for things like hiring / firing it’s been pretty much a two week down time. Good luck with whatever develops!

      • conlakappa

I co-sign. The decisionmaker could be on vacation. Remember that the business nature of your employment is a street that runs both ways. Agree to helping the student. If the offer comes, deal with it then. Plus you’ve added mentoring [more mentoring?] to your qualifications.

Netflix tests new price tiers for video service

[....] Netflix is testing new price plans for streaming video as it tries to lure more viewers. Among the plans being tested are a $6.99-a-month plan that allows only one video stream to be watched at once, and a $9.99-a-month plan that allows three streams at one time, whether on a TV, tablet or computer. A Netflix spokesman says not everyone will see the test prices and they may never roll out system wide.

Netflix’s standard $7.99-a-month plan allows users watch video on up to 2 screens at once, including TVs and mobile devices. An $11.99-a-month service allows up to four shows at once. Netflix announced that plan in April.[....]

    – - –Idris Elba ‘taken aback’ by Mandela’s blessing for ‘Long Walk to Freedom’- -

    – - – - -Idris Elba, who plays imprisoned anti-apartheid champion turned South African president Nelson Mandela in the film “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” has received high praise and a Golden Globe nomination for his role in the film. But it was a thumbs-up from the late leader himself that really impressed the star.

“(Mandela) saw some of the film,” Elba said during a Friday morning visit to TODAY. “He gave his blessing. You know, I don’t look like Nelson Mandela — that wasn’t in his interest. I think he wanted to find someone who could bring that spirit alive. … Which I was like, me? I was really sort of taken aback by that.”

But Mandela never had a chance to see the completed project. He died at the age of 95 on Dec. 5, the same day the film premiered.

“He actually passed during the half-way point of the film,” Elba
recalled. “There was sort of a bittersweet moment — because the film is a beautiful film, and it celebrates his life — so there was this moment after the film, I stood on stage with the producers and we made the announcement. You couldn’t write that. You couldn’t write that we would have to announce that Nelson Mandela actually passed (at that moment).”

And while Mandela is now gone, his influence lives on. [AMEN annnd AMEN♥]

region’s most vulnerable citizens — without any prearrangement with a shelter to take the patient in. The settlement, announced Friday, marks the first time in several years that a hospital has been caught dumping a patient without adequate medical care illegally on skid row. [Updated 9:40 a.m. PDT Jan. 3: The hospital agreed to pay $200,000 in civil penalties and $50,000 in legal fees.]

Seven years ago, city prosecutors began aggressively pursuing
criminal and civil cases against medical facilities that drop off
homeless patients at shelters. Los Angeles police reported seeing
hundreds of patients, sometimes still in hospital gowns, appearing on downtown streets. The city forced several large hospital and chains, including Kaiser Permanente, to pay massive civil penalties and agree to tough new regulations.

“Patient dumping is inhumane and intolerable,” Los Angeles City Atty. Mike Feuer said in a statement. “My office will fight to protect everyone in our community, especially the most vulnerable.” Feuer recently reignited the crackdown after taking office.[....]

As Obamacare Sign-Ups Surge, So Does Conservative Rage
    JOSH MARSHALL – JANUARY 3, 2014, 2:12 AM EST

It is amazing to witness the sheer depths of rage, denial and disgust many people experience as they see millions of people gaining access to affordable health care for the first time. Back on the 31st I wrote this overview which outlined how more than 9 million people now have health care coverage because of the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare). It now seems like the number is more like 10 million (more on that in a moment).

This evening I mentioned this number on Twitter and saw the full force of denial and outrage as many anti-Obamacare diehards made first contact with the actual number of Americans who’ve gained coverage under the program. More though, it was clear how in the absence of a dead in the water website to cry crocodile tears over, anti-Obamacare hardliners have suddenly gotten a whole lot angrier about Obamacare.

Join me after the jump and we’ll review the numbers.

lmao–it took like 12 seasons for someone black to win despite numerous ultra-talented designers, so this series isn’t exactly scored fairly. The capriciousness of the judges is actually really funny to me.

Exactly! Some of the folks who made the most hideous outfits won the whole damn thing. LOL

So David Sirota is going on and on about drones and the “kill list” on twitter and how Snowden is being demonized, and he is in danger because the big black killer Obama supposedly said in 2012 that he is good at killing people. I’m so sick of these emo progressives with their lying and whining.

Mayor de Blasio needs to put this Clintonista in check and tell him to stay on message which is no1curr about Bloomberg’s fee-fees:

…One of his chief aides, Howard Wolfson, appeared on CNN and WNYC radio to say that some of the remarks at Mr. de Blasio’s inauguration, including by the singer Harry Belafonte, had unfairly characterized the departing mayor’s record.

Asked on Thursday about “anti-Bloomberg” remarks at his inauguration
ceremony, Mr. de Blasio said he disagreed with the premise.

“I made clear my real respect for Mayor Bloomberg,” he said. “It’s not a secret that I’ve had some disagreements with him on policy, but I
honored with a whole heart what he did to this city.”

Mr. de Blasio said that “everybody who spoke at the inauguration spoke
from the heart, talked about their own understanding of our city, and
what we need to do to move our city forward.”

STEM initiative introduces high-tech careers to minority students

[....] The Pennsylvania Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA), was founded in 1970 and has helped millions of low-income students go on to careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through challenging courses, mentors and training. Hosted by Temple, the initiative offers free Saturday classes, a two-week summer camp and support to after-school clubs in a variety of technology-based subjects. It focuses on African-American and Latino students, who are underrepresented in high-paying STEM jobs.

In 2 1/2 years, the program has served about 3,500 students in grades six through 12 in the School District of Philadelphia, including those in some of the district’s lowest-performing high schools. It already has yielded fruit. The senior mobile-apps team won the $5,000 grand prize at the citywide 2013 AT&T Edutech Hackathon. Four members of the computer-science team, including Ball, also received $3,200 and summer apprenticeships from the American Society of Engineering Education to work in U.S. Navy labs.

And most recently, students in the program took home four team medals and 18 individual awards at the 2013 MESA USA National Engineering Championships.[....]

Obama Admin. Announces Two Executive Actions On Gun Background Checks
    JULIE PACE – January 3, 2014, 1:16 PM EST

HONOLULU (AP) — The Obama administration on Friday announced a pair of executive actions aimed at strengthening federal background checks for gun purchasers, with a particular focus on limiting firearm access for those with mental health issues.

One proposed rule change aims to clarify terminology used by federal
law to prohibit people from purchasing a firearm for mental health
reasons. The administration said states have complained that some
wording is ambiguous, making it difficult to determine who should be
    blocked from buying a weapon.

A second proposed rule change would allow hospitals and other
entities covered by patient privacy provisions to submit additional
information to the background check system. However, the administration said the rule change would not require reporting on general mental health care or legally prohibit someone from having a firearm solely because they sought treatment.

After Recent Explosions, North Dakota Oil Shares Take A Hit

After a string of uncommon crude oil train explosions, investors are
taking note that North Dakota’s oil may be more dangerous than most. Shares of several North Dakota’s major oil drillers dropped sharply Thursday as the U.S. government warned that crude oil from the state’s Bakken shale may be extra flammable.[....] Typically, crude oil doesn’t cause the kinds of huge fireballs seen at the derailment.[....]

It is unclear as of yet whether this flammability is simply caused by the chemical makeup of Bakken crude, or whether the injection of hydraulic fracturing chemicals could contribute. The potential difficulties in transporting more dangerous fuel was enough to cause shares of Whiting Petroleum Corp., Continental Resources Inc., and other Bakken drillers to drop significantly on Thursday.[....]

Higher medical costs, not ACA, boost premiums

[....] Rising medical costs were the primary driver of recent rate increases by insurers and accounted for three-quarters or more of the larger premium hikes requested between July 2012 and June 2013, according to a recent Commonwealth Fund study.[....] The review found that only about half the filings attributed any portion of rate increases to provisions of the health reform law that had gone into effect by 2013. Overall, those effects represented only a small part of insurers’ increases.[....]

The ACA-related factor mentioned most often, but only in a third of
the rate filings in the study, was the requirement to cover women’s
preventive and contraceptive services without cost sharing by the
patient. But the insurers who cited this and other ACA-related costs
attributed only about 1 percentage point of their rate increases to the health reform law.[....] And a few insurers said that ACA provisions that took effect previously, such as increasing caps on lifetime and annual limits, added to higher costs.[....]
