Friday Open Thread: Dying To Play – Black Athletes and Racial Violence

Good Morning POU!

Happy Friday everyone! We continue to look at the stories of African American athletes who endured racial prejudice and violence while playing their sport of choice.

George Henry Jewett II (April 1870 – August 12, 1908) was an American athlete who became the first African-American football player at both the University of Michigan and Northwestern University, and in the Big Ten Conference. He played for the Michigan Wolverines as a fullback, halfback and field goal kicker in 1890 and 1892 and was considered one of Michigan’s greatest players in the pre-Fielding H. Yost era.

Michigan wouldn’t have another African American player until Willis Ward in 1932.”When (Fielding) Yost came along (1901) he put everything under glass,” said Ann Arbor native Coleman Jewett, George Jewett II’s grandson. “Yost wouldn’t let black athletes play football, even though there were some great ballplayers.”

The extent of George Jewett’s football accomplishments would remain buried until 1952 when they were revisited in a local news story. Coleman Jewett was a high school junior then; he’d grown up in Ann Arbor with no idea of his grandfather’s accomplishments.

“It was late in my football career—really late—that I found out about all of this,” said Coleman, who carried on the family tradition of academic and athletic excellence at Ann Arbor High two generations later. “I would probably have tried harder had I known.”

Early Life

Jewett grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of a successful blacksmith. At the time of the 1870 United States Census, he was listed as being one month old. His father was George Jewett, a blacksmith born in Kentucky in approximately 1845, and his mother was Letty Jewett, born in Michigan in approximately 1848. He had an older sister, Mary, born in approximately 1868. The family was residing in Ann Arbor at the time of both the 1870 and 1880 Censuses.

Jewett attended Ann Arbor High School where he was the class valedictorian in 1889. In high school, he was the captain of the debate, football and baseball teams. He was also the fastest sprinter in the Midwest, having won the Amateur Athletic Union 100-yard dash competition, and was fluent in German, Italian and French.

College Years

After his initial season at Michigan, Jewett sat out the following year but returned to the Wolverines for the 1892 campaign before transferring to Northwestern University. On several occasions while at Michigan, Jewett met vocal and physical harassment. The annual contest against Purdue provided an especially hostile atmosphere. For example, Boilermaker fans loudly chanted “Kill the coon!” and other racial epithets at Jewett during one game in West Lafayette. Opposing players also subjected Jewett to considerable rough play. On at least two occasions, he responded to repeated foul play and late tackles by slugging a particularly dirty opponent in the face.

In a 1955 letter to a friend, former Michigan end Roger Sherman recalled two specific incidents from Jewett’s playing days. One involved a hotel clerk in Indianapolis who refused let Jewett check in with the team on a trip. (He was ultimately allowed to stay after his teammates and some local alumni stepped in.) Another, Sherman said, happened during a game at Albion College.

“His presence was resented by both the Albion team and the spectators. Every effort was made to get him ruled off, and traps were set for him to bring this about. On one occasion he was charged with ‘slugging’ and the cry went up from the crowd to ‘Kill the nigger.’ The crowd surged out onto the field, blows were struck and a riot was in the making when the local police intervened and the game went on with Jewett still in the lineup.”

And though Sherman described Jewett as “modest and retiring,” a 1952 Ann Arbor News story recounting Jewett’s career suggests he also had a grittier side: “All accounts agreed that Jewett could not only take the grueling punishment of oldtime football, but he could dish it out, too. He could stand just so much kinetic unkindness—but no more. Such situations he handled without subtlety or secrecy. More than once, in plain view of players and crowd, he would knuckle the nearest nose to a neat knob and then march, with dignity, to the sidelines under the referee’s chaperonage.”

Jewett didn’t play football in 1891, but he showed up again on the 1892 Michigan team that tangled with college football legends Amos Alonzo Stagg and John Heisman.Stagg played for and coached the University of Chicago squad that Jewett and the Wolverines stung for three touchdowns in a 18-0 victory. Jewett scored two of them and set up the third by tossing a lateral to a teammate. (History credits Stagg with developing the lateral pass.)

Jewett scored three touchdowns in the first half against Heisman-coached Oberlin College, and though Heisman praised his play, neither school has ever conceded the game. The teams had agreed the game would end at 5 p.m., and Oberlin—leading 24-22 near the end of the game—claimed time was up. Michigan argued that there were still 10 minutes left.

While Heisman argued with the referee, Jewett quietly picked up the ball and walked into the end zone for a touchdown. The referee ruled in Michigan’s favor, but both schools still count the game as a victory.

A disagreement with medical school dean Victor Vaughan prompted Jewett to transfer to Northwestern University, where he finished his medical degree. He played football for Northwestern in 1893 and ’94, becoming the first African American player in that school’s history as well. Jewett was not only the first African-American football player at both Michigan and Northwestern, he was also the first African-American athlete to letter in football for any of the schools that formed the Big Ten Conference.

He practiced medicine briefly in Chicago, but returned to Ann Arbor in 1899, eventually seizing an opportunity in what was then the brand new field of cleaning and pressing.

Dashing in his derby hats and spats, and able to talk with his immigrant customers in their native tongues, Jewett built a successful business. His State Street shop, “The Valet,” delivered clean, pressed clothes by carriage behind matched teams of black and white horses.

“Medicine wasn’t as lucrative as it is today,” said Coleman Jewett. “In those days people didn’t clean and press their own clothing, so cleaning and pressing were the big thing of day, and he did quite well.”George Jewett married Lillian Zebbs in 1901. They had two children, George H. Jewett III (1902-77) and Richard Jewett (born 1908). Richard—Coleman’s father—was eight days old when George Jewett died of a heart attack while working in his shop at 38.

Trump: Tax reform ‘needed now more than ever’

    Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD – 09/08/17 09:17 AM EDT

President Trump on Friday pressed Republican lawmakers to act swiftly on legislation to overhaul the country’s tax code, urging them not to wait until the end of the month.

“Republicans must start the Tax Reform/Tax Cut legislation ASAP. Don’t wait until the end of September. Needed now more than ever. Hurry!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Trump’s entreatment to lawmakers came a day after the Senate passed a stopgap measure to fund the government past the end of the September and raise the nation’s debt limit.

While Trump has long promised tax reform, he has begun to push the matter more aggressively in recent weeks, holding events in Missouri and North Dakota to pitch his overhaul proposal.

The rising Democratic star wants to build his party a bridge to Bernie Sanders’ health care plan.

By ELANA SCHOR 09/07/2017 06:01 PM EDT Updated 09/08/2017 08:29 AM EDT

While Bernie Sanders readies a single-payer health care bill that the GOP is itching to attack, one of his Democratic colleagues is proposing a step toward that goal that could give cover to the party’s vulnerable incumbents.

Sen. Chris Murphy, a potential presidential contender, is working on legislation expected this fall that would let every individual and business buy into Medicare as part of Obamacare’s exchanges. As Sanders and other potential challengers to President Donald Trump flock to “Medicare for all,” embracing a top liberal priority before 2020, Murphy is taking a conspicuously more pragmatic approach designed to get Democrats closer to that lofty but potentially unobtainable goal.

In the process, it could give vulnerable Democrats loath to attach themselves to Sanders a more politically palatable alternative that still satisfies the party’s base.

The first-term senator is also raising his national profile by wading into the hot-button single-payer debate — though the Connecticut Democrat has tamped down talk that he might take on Trump in 2020. It’s not about competing with Sanders, Murphy says, but rather offering a complementary path toward the creation of a single-payer system.

Bernie backers’ attacks on Democrats infuriate the party

Prominent Democrats are increasingly riled by attacks from Bernie Sanders’ supporters, whose demands for ideological purity are hurting the party ahead of the 2018 midterms and 2020 presidential election, they say.

But it’s not just the outside agitators that Democratic lawmakers, operatives, and activists are annoyed with: They’re tired of what they see as the senator’s hesitance to confront his own backers, either in public or through back channels.

Tensions boiled over recently when a handful of Sanders loyalists bashed freshman Sen. Kamala Harris — a rising star in the party and potential 2020 hopeful — as an establishment tool. Democrats were also rankled that other prominent Sanders allies said support for single-payer health care should be a litmus test for candidates.

In response, Democratic senators and outside groups have begun telling Sanders and friendly intermediaries that if he wants to be a leading figure for Democrats ahead of 2020’s presidential election, he needs to get his supporters in line — or at least publicly disavow their more incendiary statements.

Then the Democrats need to boot the Bernie Backers out NOW. Don’t try to appease these people in order to win 2018 and 2020 because they’re not going to vote for you in 2018 or 2020. How do we know this? Because they didn’t vote Democrat in 2016 when it was critical.

NFL rejects police union request, won’t investigate Michael Bennett
    play
    7:44 AM ET

The NFL said Thursday it has no plans to investigate Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett’s behavior during an incident in which he was detained and handcuffed by police in Las Vegas two weeks ago.

The league was responding to a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell from the president of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, the union that represents the police in that city. In the letter, the union alleged that Bennett made false accusations against Las Vegas police and asked the league to “conduct an investigation, and take appropriate action.”

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy wrote in response, “There is no allegation of a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy and therefore there is no basis for an NFL investigation.”

House passes Trump deal on majority Democratic vote

    Source: The Hill

BY CRISTINA MARCOS – 09/08/17 10:37 AM EDT

The House on Friday cleared a short-term measure to avoid a government shutdown and raise the debt limit through December, ratifying a deal President Trump struck with Democrats.

Lawmakers voted 316-90 for the package that includes more than $15 billion in disaster recovery aid for communities affected by Hurricane Harvey. The majority of House Republicans voted for the bill, something that had been uncertain, but more of the yes votes came from Democrats.

Ninety lawmakers voted against the bill, all of them Republicans.

The House voted earlier in the week to approve a standalone measure to provide federal assistance for Harvey relief in an overwhelming 419-3 vote. But many conservatives balked at the final bill, which became a three-month extension of the debt ceiling with no spending reforms.

Trump: Peace in the Middle East Might Not Be So Easy

    Source: Newsweek

TRUMP THOUGHT PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST WOULD BE EASY, NOW HE ISN’T SURE

BY CALLUM PATON ON 9/8/17 AT 9:00 AM

When he took office, President Donald Trump was convinced that peace Middle East would be easy. Now, seven months into the job, he appears to have realised that ending the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians may be more difficult than he initially though.

After his forthright assertions about his ability to solve the world’s most intractable conflict (“frankly maybe not as difficult as people have thought over the years,” he said in May) the president said Thursday that he was now more pessimistic about the prospect of peace in the region.

“I think we have a chance of doing it. I think the Palestinians would like to see it happen. I think the Israelis would like to see it happen. So I think there is a chance that there could be peace. But again, I say that a little bit reluctantly. We’re going to give it our best,” he told reporters at the White House.

Early on the president put peace between Israel and the Palestinians at the heart of his foreign policy agenda and a visit to the Middle East was his first after taking office.

Gary Cohn Could Be Next White House Official to Exit On A Friday

    Source: Newsweek

BY GREG PRICE ON 9/8/17 AT 9:47 AM

Friday has been firing day for several top Trump administration staffers over its first seven-plus months, and Gary Cohn, the director of the National Economic Council, reportedly could be the next ushered out of the West Wing.

Cohn is said to have angered President Donald Trump with his comments about how the administration should handle white supremacist groups in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, last month, and concern about the former Goldman Sachs president’s job security has been increasing, Reuters reported late Thursday.

During an interview with the Financial Times last month, Cohn said that the administration “can and must do better” in condemning hate groups, and that he felt “enormous pressure” to leave his current position, remarks that reportedly incensed Trump.

Furthermore, while Cohn had been viewed as a possible successor to Federal Reserve Chairman Janet Yellen after her tenure is over, Trump is now “unlikely” to choose him specifically because of Cohn’s comments on Charlottesville, The Wall Street Journal said on Wednesday.

Rick Perry went looking for a reason to bail out coal and came back empty
    09/07/17 02:40

When Energy Secretary Rick Perry ordered a study back in April to examine the “premature retirement” of “baseload” coal and nuclear plants, the writing seemed to be on the wall: presumably, the administration would use the study to claim that renewable energy is undermining the reliability of the grid, justify the rollback of incentives and environmental protections and then prop up coal.

But now the report is out, and it does not provide much support for that conclusion. The study reveals some essential facts: Cheap natural gas is the primary force driving the retirement of coal and nuclear plants. Many coal plants are retiring because they’re neither efficient nor competitive. And the nation’s power grid has become more reliable as it has become more diverse with more renewables and natural gas.

For his part, Trump has soured on the Republican congressional leadership in recent months, fuming to associates that they led him astray on their health care strategy, among other complaints.

The president has told those close to him that he regrets choosing to tackle the repeal and replace of Barack Obama’s health care law as his first legislative push. He has singled out Ryan for blame, saying the speaker assured him it would pass and instead handed him an early, humiliating failure, before ultimate House passage of a revived bill, according to three White House and outside advisers familiar with the conversations but not authorized to speak about them publicly.

The South Carolina Republican is on a lonely crusade to repeal and replace Obamacare, even though Republicans failed dismally this summer to get that done and the GOP has moved on to other weighty matters such as keeping the government funded past Sept. 30 and increasing the nation’s debt limit.

Graham disputed the notion he’s on a fool’s errand.

“Here’s what would be crazy for a Republican: The promise of repealing and replacing Obamacare for seven years, throwing your up hands and saying, ‘Sorry, we can’t do it,’” Graham told McClatchy this week. “This idea has never been tried. It’s the best idea to replace Obamacare. It’s never been given a shot.

    • Town

But, you had 7 years to come up with a replacement and you didn’t.

    • jziglar

Graham, it’s over dude. McConnell and Co. gave it their best shot and failed so now they are moving on to tax cuts which is the only thing modern republicans are successful at getting done. Congress has a lot of must pass legislation and very little time left and the year is almost over. And many GOP senators are actually happy to be moving away from health care and want to cut a deal with democrats to improve the markets.

‘Disgusted to be an American’: Tampa woman throws tearful tantrum over Confederate statue relocation

“You did right, you voted to save it,” the woman said, referring to members of the council’s attempt to halt the relocation of a Confederate monument from in front of the Hillsborough County courthouse to a private cemetery in a Tampa suburb. “I can’t believe it. You did the right thing, and I’m just disgusted.”
In June, the commission voted 4 to 3 to keep the statue, but was ultimately overruled.

Did any of you hear about that Paul Ryan interview with Fox where he said that the house this year has been more productive than at anytime in history? LMAO! The last year of Barack Obama’s term in office was more productive than 2017. Obama signed major education legislation re-writing No Child Left Behind, a major overhaul and improvement of Chemical Safety with a new environmental law, and the Cures Act. Barack got more done with a “do nothing” congress than Trump has with republican control of the senate and the house. And I’m not even going to talk about the first 2 years of Obama/ Reid/ Pelosi where they passed a lot of legislation and got a bunch of things done. And then we have previous congresses during the 60’s with LBJ and the early years of FDR where so many laws and agencies were passed and created. You can point to so many previous congresses that were more productive than this one. Ryan is sounding more and more like Trump. LOL!

Prosecutors want Martin Shkreli jailed after ‘threats’ to Hillary Clinton, others
Published 15 Hours Ago | Updated 26 Mins Ago

Federal prosecutors on Thursday said they want a judge to revoke “Pharma bro” Martin Shkreli’s $5 million release bond and throw him in jail, after the convicted fraudster encouraged Facebook followers to grab Hillary Clinton’s hair and give him samples of it.

Prosecutors cited that threat, as well as other threatening comments Shkreli has directed at two other women in online comments, in a court motion that suggests the 34-year-old former pharmaceuticals executive could be a “danger to the community.

Poor In Miami: Hoping To Ride Out Irma On Bread And Cans Of Tuna
    September 8, 20175:14 AM ET

Eugene Johnson purchased two loaves of bread and batteries for his flashlight. Those are his supplies in preparation for Hurricane Irma.

“I’m on fixed income,” said Johnson. “This hit me out of the blue. I had to pay my rent, my electricity bill and stuff like that.”
In his kitchen cabinet he already had a few cans of tuna and he plans to boil some eggs.

While local news broadcasts have been dominated by images of people flocking to stores all week to stock up on water, nonperishable food and supplies to ride out Hurricane Irma, many families can’t afford to do that. In Miami-Dade, about 530,000 of the estimated 3 million residents live below the poverty line.

Johnson, 65, lives in an affordable housing complex in Miami and, like many of his neighbors who are also on fixed or limited income, he doesn’t own a car.

“I have to depend on other people to bring me water so I have a friend who said they gonna bring me some water,” he said.

Cruz fires back at Christie: ‘Go back to the beach’
BY MAX GREENWOOD – 09/08/17 12:38 PM EDT

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) savaged New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie this week after he criticized Cruz’s request for federal aid in response to Hurricane Harvey, telling the Republican governor to “go back to the beach.”

In an interview with The New York Times published Friday, Cruz said he is “quite confident that nobody in Texas gives a flip what Chris Christie has to say.”

“And it seems not many people in New Jersey do either,” he said, an apparent reference to Christie’s languishing approval ratings. “Chris should go back to the beach.”

The media is purposely focusing on them sitting or kneeling rather than why they’re sitting and kneeling. White America is just sick at heart. To deny peoples humanity and see them only as a problem.

House Republicans lash Mnuchin, Mulvaney behind closed doors

    Source: Politico

GOP lawmakers booed the Trump administration officials for their debt ceiling stance.

By RACHAEL BADE and KYLE CHENEY 09/08/2017 11:54 AM EDT

It was supposed to be a call to unity.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney joined a closed-door GOP conference meeting Friday to try to rally wary Republicans around a debt ceiling bill they hated. But the huddle quickly went off the rails when Rep. Tim Walberg stood up to say President Donald Trump needed to play more with the team. The Michigan Republican said he was all for bipartisanship. But he argued that Trump shouldn’t have blindsided the conference the way he did when he struck a deal with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, undercutting GOP leaders.

Walberg was the first of more than a dozen lawmakers who echoed that same sentiment, according to sources in the room. Republican Study Committee Chairman Mark Walker of North Carolina asked Mnuchin why he even bothered meeting with conservatives over the summer if he was just going to ignore their input entirely. Another lawmaker said Trump “pissed off a whole lot of people in here” when he went against a joint leadership-White House plan to advocate for a longer debt limit increase that took the issue off the table until after the mid-term elections. And the room booed when Mulvaney and Mnuchin refused to commit to spending cuts during the next debt ceiling debate — and then asked for their vote on the current legislation.

“Mnuchin’s last words, and I quote, were ‘Vote for the debt ceiling for me,’” Walker said as he left the meeting. “You could hear the murmurs in the room there. There was some hissing and I don’t know if there was booing but there were some groans.”
