Friday Open Thread: Little Known or Interesting Black History Facts

It’s Friday, the end of the work week and the start of the weekend.

This week’s open threads highlighted little known or interesting black history facts in celebration of black history month.

fjohnson

Francis Johnson

FACT 1: In 1804, Lemuel Haynes is the first African American to receive an honorary degree in U.S. history when Middlebury College awards him a Master’s Degree at its second commencement.

FACT 2: In 1810, The U.S. Congress prohibits African Americans from carrying mail for the U.S. Postal Service.

FACT 3: Andry’s Rebellion on January 8-11, 1811. A slave insurrection led by Charles Deslondes, begins on the Louisiana plantation of Manual Andry.

Named after the owner of the plantation where the event originated, the revolt of 400-500 slaves in the parishes of the Andry plantation caused uproar in New Orleans. Led by a Saint Domingue slave named Charles Deslondes, the uprising was built on the fear generated by the Haitian Revolution of 1791, coupled with the large population of free Negroes to further accentuate the tension in New Orleans.

General Wade Hampton assembled two companies of volunteers, and eventually with the additional help of a regular army troop the disturbance was put down, requiring the service of nearly 700 soldiers. By the end of the day, the rebels had murdered two whites and eighty-two rebels were killed in retribution, making the suppression of this revolt the bloodiest in the history of the country. After hanging the heads of some of the guilty on poles in New Orleans, authorities tightened the restrictions governing the activities of free blacks, and a few loyal slaves were emancipated.

FACT 4: In 1817, Francis Johnson of Philadelphia becomes the first black bandleader and composer to publish sheet music. In 1837 he becomes the first American to perform before Queen Victoria in England.

Francis Johnson, musician, composer, and bandmaster, was born in 1792 in Martinique in the West Indies and immigrated to Philadelphia in 1809 at the age of 17.  By that point he had already mastered the keyed bugle and the violin.  By his early 20s he was building a reputation as a bandleader in Philadelphia and southeastern Pennsylvania.

Johnson gained greater popularity after music publisher George Willig published his Collection of New Cotillions in 1817. This was the first instance of a black band leader having his musical compositions published. By 1818, 26-year-old Johnson had become a leading dance band conductor for Philadelphia’s high society.  During the 1820s, Johnson’s band performed at the city’s most popular dance venues at schools, private parties, and balls.  Prominent military regiments like the Washington Guards Company Three Band and the State and the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry also hired Johnson’s ensemble.  He personalized his performances by experimenting with different instrumentations, strings, and winds.

During his prolific career, Johnson composed over 200 musical arrangements in various styles including cotillions, operatic airs, ballads, quadrilles, patriotic marches, quicksteps, and other forms of ballroom music.

Besides serving the musical taste of the white public, Johnson also performed spirituals at African American churches in Philadelphia, Boston, and New York.  One of his most memorable musical performances occurred in 1841 when he collaborated with Morris Brown, Jr., one of the leading black ministers of the era, to perform Haydn’s Creation at the First African Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Johnson’s band also shared the spotlight with other black bands in Philadelphia including those led by James Hemmenway and Isaac Hazzard.  Nonetheless his was the most popular black band of the era.

Besides having the distinction of being the first black American composer to have his arrangements published as sheet music, Johnson was also the first African American bandleader to conduct public concerts and in 1837 he led the first American ensemble to perform before Queen Victoria in England.  Johnson was also the first black musician to perform in integrated musical events in the United States, and the first musician to introduce keyed brass instruments to American bands.  Johnson left numerous manuscript and piano transcriptions.

Francis Johnson died in 1844 in Philadelphia after a lengthy illness at the age of 52.

FACT 5: In 1818, Thomas Day of North Carolina is considered the first widely known furniture and cabinet maker in the United States.

Good Morning everyone. It is cold out there, but it’s RAINING in SoCal. Hope it comes AG way.

Winter in Toronto look book: Layers of Despair pic.twitter.com/1NAXo9yiVD

    • goldenstar

She does look sad for living in Toronto. I see the most stylish clothing lines from Canada. Especially winter boots, coats, and jackets. So, she needs to step up that game.

      • conlakappa

My serious hat, gloves, and scarf came from Canada. furhatworld.com rocks! No, none of those things I bought were fur. The company has other items and great customer service.

        • TyrenM

After Aretha Monday – you go ahead and rock your fur lol.

          Just don’t tell Creolechild.

          • conlakappa

I have no moral objections to fur [being at the top of the food chain should get us something] but don’t own any. A few years back, I had a classic sitcom moment of being pissed that my cousin has my grandmother’s mink wrap. Yes, the grandmother who is still alive and used to wear it to church on cool spring days.

    • MsKitty

LMAO because it’s true. You know it’s cold when people throw all fashion sense out the window and don’t care, or as I call it “it’s too damn cold trying to be cute” weather.

    • rikyrah

      REAL Winter+fashion= impossibility.
      You can be fashionable..
      or you can be warm..
      You cannot be both.

      • conlakappa

Hmmm, apparently you’ve seen me in my double everything days, huh? Everything starts with the sets of long johns and working my way outward. Wind chill this morning here was 0. The high is supposed to be freezing.

        • TyrenM

We’re hoping to get where you are… next Thursday.

          • conlakappa

And the requisite Midwestern/Plain States/wherever-tundra-like-conditions person is heard from, registering, “You don’t know what cold is!” I’ll say it again: I’m in the freakin’ Mid-Atlantic/The South. We are not supposed to have weather like this. We don’t have a lake to have what feel like lake effects!

          • TyrenM

Good morning to you too Conlakappa.

      • goldenstar

I think that one can be truly fashionable in the midst of polar vortex. Just hafta be able to afford it all.

    • isonprize

Her neck is exposed and she’s not using her hood. Oh, and moisturizing chap stick (the blue tube, NOT the original…) in every pocket of every winter coat.

If you are really dressed right for the hawk, the only person who really knows who you are was there with you when you put on your gear.

Oh yeah, the hair out is a no-no. At least it is for me. My hair isn’t quite that long, but regardless, it gets tucked into the hat. I buy (or make) my winter hats larger for that very reason. Snowy wet hair is not cute.

      • conlakappa

I keep seeing people with uncovered heads and want to throw hats on them but they’re clearly too dumb to get it. At the top of the metro stairs, I saw a tube of Carmex and thought that somebody is bummed to have dropped it!

  • crazycanuck

Ok, I’m off into the tundra.

    Obama, software firms team up
By Justin Sink February 28, 2014, 06:00 am

President Obama will announce Friday that two software firms have pledged more than $400 million worth of software for American classrooms during an appearance at the inaugural White House Film Festival.

Software maker Adobe will provide some $300 million in free copies of programs like Photoshop and Premiere Elements that will help students and educators complete digital creative projects. Prezi, a Hungarian software company, is providing $100 million in licenses for its professional presentation program.

“We believe in the power of media creation as a way for youth to express their creativity and build their skills for future success,” said Shantanu Narayen, president and CEO of Adobe, in a statement. “We’re proud to contribute to the President’s ConnectED initiative, and look forward to seeing the benefits that our technology brings to both students and educators.”

The pledged donations come on top of $750 million in private-sector commitments announced by Obama earlier this month. Those donations included classroom software, as well as Apple computers and tablets and Internet access for schools and libraries.

In a statement, the White House said the announcement was in keeping with Obama’s “pledge to make 2014 a year of action using the power of his pen and his phone.”

Lupita Nyong’o: ‘I Got Teased and Taunted About my Skin’
    February 28, 2014

Lupita Nyong’o had the audience in tears Thursday while accepting her honor for best breakout performance at Essence magazine’s seventh annual Women in Hollywood luncheon.

The “12 Years a Slave” star and Oscar nominee for best supporting actress revealed that as a young girl, she had wished her dark skin would become lighter.

“I got teased and taunted about my skin,” Nyong’o began, on stage in a ballroom at the Beverly Hills Hotel. “My one prayer to God was that I would wake up lighter skinned. The morning would come and I would be so excited about seeing my new skin that I would refuse to look down at myself until I was in front of the mirror because I wanted to see my face first. Every day I would feel the disappointment of being just as dark as the day before.”

Nyong’o said she tried to bargain with God by vowing to stop eating sugar cubes and to never lose her school sweater again, if she could only see a change in her skin tone. It wasn’t until she discovered Sudanese British supermodel Alek Wek that she began to believe in her own beauty.

“She was dark as night and was in all the magazines and on runways,” Nyong’o said. “My complexion had always been an obstacle to overcome. I couldn’t believe that people were embracing a woman who looked so much like me as beautiful. It was perplexing and I wanted to reject it because I had begun to enjoy the seduction of inadequacy. But a flower couldn’t help but bloom inside of me.”

Paralyzed GOP Lawmaker On Medicaid Opposes Medicaid Expansio

Rep. Josh Miller, recipient of significant government assistance, opposes Medicaid expansion in Arkansas
    by Max Brantley @ArkansasBlog

The enlistment of roughly half the Republican legislative delegation in implementation of Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion is remarkable. Republicans tend to fall by faith in opposition to bigger government investments in the well-being of poor people.

But some of the faithful hold firm. I was drawn to Rep. Josh Miller, a Republican legislator from Heber Springs, who orated against the private option Medicaid expansion last week. He invoked FDR’s New Deal — a “hand up,” he said, not a “handout.”

Miller is of interest because he’s a well-known beneficiary of federal government support himself.

Miller, 33, was on an alcohol-fueled drive with a friend about 11 years ago (he can’t remember who was driving) when their pickup plunged off a ravine near Choctaw. He was rescued, but suffered a broken neck and was paralyzed. Miller was uninsured. What young, fit man needs health insurance, he thought then. (He had some reason to know better. Not long before, he’d broken his hand in a fight and had to refuse the recommended surgery to fix the injuries properly because he was uninsured.)

    more here: http://www.arktimes.com/arkansas/rep-josh-miller-has-received-millions-in-government-assistance-opposes-medicaid-expansion-in-arkansas/Content?oid=3220760

    • jds09

Quotes like this is where I have problems with Bill Clinton….

“Apart from the core philosophical difference — Miller opposes an expansion of government expenditures; I don’t — Miller’s position seems to boil down to the belief that some needy people are more deserving than others.”

These are HIS PEOPLE who are killing themselves, each other and innocent by-standers with their STUPIDITY. And he is no where to be found. Using his vaulted persuasion skills at home would make him credible.

      See….
this kind of person just makes me think dark thoughts.

Some commenter said this guy was a hard worker with a job
so he deserved Medicaid. Of course, without Medicaid how
would he work? His care would bankrupt his family. Plus
he knows he’s protected by federal law. Before LBJ and all
those who passed Medicaid law in Congress he’d be SOL.

      • conlakappa

Hard worker will always, always, always be code for “this is a white person so he’s deserving.” I wish they’d come out and just say it. We’d save a fortune in decoder rings!

Good morning, POU. I’ve been shut out of disqus, besides busy doing other things. But I just had to come in today to make my stand on the issue of hatas and PBO. I am in process of listening to PBO’s speech on My Brothers’ Keeper given yesterday. I will get back to it shortly. I don’t know what the so-called blackademics said. I refuse to listen to them. I don’t even look at them. My hatred for them is deep. Even a couple weeks ago, when POU posted Mr. Barf-ey’s pic of he and PBO, (and we know Barf-ey is no academic, though he tries to emulate one), I was repulsed recalling how, to him, the verdict in Trayvon Martin case was “the right one”. Really? Fuck him big time. I would need to restrain myself should I ever see him again as I do on occasion. As for those that could find nothing positive to say about PBO’s efforts to raise the status of our endangered young men of color, double F them, the skanky, slimy bastards. Listening to PBO, in parts of his speech, one could hear he was feeling what he way saying- it was strong in his voice. How dare anyone minimize his sense of blackness. Hell, he deals with it every day in ways most of us couldn’t for lack of exposure. So as I see these miscreants displayed anywhere, I shall shoo them out of my sight as I do one of those pesky flies that bombard us in the heat of summer. To me, that is how miniscule they are, as witnessed by the assistance they have thus far given our young men – none that would cost them any comfort ! Carry on Mr. President.

Truly, after learning that United Healthcare is involved no more needs to be said. Just in case, data brokers, an unregulated industry, are far more worrisome than the NSA. Data brokers earn more than $156 billion annually selling personal and private information like rape victim’s info, HIV-positive individuals’ info or women’s last gynecologist visit and more. Stores in malls admit their use of data profiles based on cell phone number to track individuals as they walk through the mall.

The new talking point amongst the Ivory Tower Crew in their criticisms of My Brother’s Keeper is that philanthropy is inadequate. Yet, I don’t see these Blackademics refusing grants and donations from philanthropic institutions to fund their research.

        • Adriane Farray

Why am I not surprised that the members of the Bitter Black Intellectual Collective have already proclaimed My Brother’s Keeper a failure? If philanthropy can’t make a difference, then why are these self same critics assiduously scrounging for every penny they can find? If POTUS had gotten the support he needed from progressives including the aforementioned noisy black progressives in 2010, he would been able to pass a more ambitious anti-poverty program and would not have to resort to ‘philanthropy’, as they put it. Rather than deriding My Brother’s Keeper, these black academics should be embracing it and looking for ways to expand upon it. But that would actually require doing something rather than just complaining.

    • jziglar

Okay so what’s the alternative ? Are they going to create their own foundations, or corporations to fund causes that help the black community ? If the answer is no then they should STFU because doing nothing and talking is not a plan. I’m so sick of these do nothing negroes.

    • Kennymack1971

Axel Foley nailed these mofos yesterday. Their whole shtick is to be the go to experts when it’s time to talk about “Black Issues”. And that’s all they do…talk. It gets them on TV, nice cushy fellowships and professorships. Now here comes Barack Obama an actual organizer moving forward to actually DO something instead of talking it to death so of course they poo poo it. The President is jacking up a whole lot of folks hustle and they don’t like it.

State Dept. Investigators: No Conflict of Interest in Keystone XL Review
By Tim McDonnell Thu Feb. 27, 2014 9:23 AM GMT

Opponents of the Keystone XL pipeline were dealt another blow Wednesday evening with the release of a long-awaited report from the State Department’s internal oversight office on a potential conflict of interest in the Department’s environmental review of the project. The report found that even though employees of the contractor hired to carry out the review had previously consulted for the company pushing the pipeline, the information they provided to the Department was “not misleading.”

Moreover, the report found that State Department officials had followed protocol for objectively selecting a contractor, even taking steps that are above and beyond what is officially called for. For example, a six-person panel conducted in-person interviews with each contractor applying for the job.

Last night’s report, issued by the State Department Office of Inspector General (OIG), comes on the heels of the environmental review in question, which found that oil in the Canadian tar sands region would likely be exploited with or without Keystone XL. That was unwelcome news for the project’s opponents, since President Obama, in his major climate change speech last summer, said his administration would approve the pipeline only if it wouldn’t lead to a significant increase in carbon emissions.

Eugene Robinson: My Brother’s Keeper: A Helping Hand For Young Men Of Color

“My Brother’s Keeper” has a much nicer ring than “stop and frisk.” It also promises to be a more effective, less self-defeating way to address the interlocking social and economic crises afflicting young men of color. I’ll go out on a limb and predict that President Obama gets some heat for launching a program whose benefits are aimed solely at African American and Hispanic men and boys.

The nation’s first black president gets slammed by critics who accuse him of “playing the race card” every time he acknowledges that race and racism still play a role in determining opportunities and outcomes. But obviously they do. My Brother’s Keeper, which Obama announced Thursday, is the kind of targeted public-private initiative that might actually do some good, even without tons of new federal money thrown in.

Vandal strikes Spike Lee’s former Fort Greene block

By Barry Paddock AND Irving Dejohn / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
    Friday, February 28, 2014, 12:35 PM

Gentrification hasn’t taken all of the edge out of Brooklyn.

An angry vandal struck Spike Lee’s former Fort Greene home on Friday, three days after he caused controversy by saying his old neighborhood looked like the “m—–f—–g Westminster dog show.”

An at-large tagger hit the 165 Washington Park family home that Lee
referenced during his tirade on the changing demographics of Brooklyn, neighbors said.

The anemic aerosol artist only wrote half of his famous film title “Do The Right Thing” on the side of the stoop.

“I think that Spike needs to stop mentioning the house in his
comments,” Lee’s half-brother Arnold, who lives at the home, told the
Daily News. “He can say whatever he wants, but don’t mention that.”

Molly Redden: This Program Is Helping Crush Childhood Obesity. Guess What Republicans Want To Do To It

Researchers are still exploring what factors caused the early childhood obesity rate to plummet43 percent over the last decade. But a group of health experts at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill think that they have found at least part of the answer: changes to the federally funded Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that gave poor mothers the means to purchase more fresh produce for their children.

This program, which is better known as WIC, provides billions of dollars per year in nutritious food vouchers for low-income pregnant women, breast-feeding women, and children younger than five. WIC was created in the 1970s, but it wasn’t until 2009 that it provided mothers with vouchers for fruits and vegetables. That’s the change that the North Carolina researchers think may have contributed to the stunning decline in obesity rates. Republicans looking to slash federal spending have targeted WIC in recent years. In March 2012, for example, the GOP-controlled House of Representatives tried to cut $243 million from WIC.

ThinkProgress: Federal Government Expands Access To Healthy Food For Low-Income Moms And Babies

A government program that gives federal food assistance to an estimated 9 million women and children is getting revamped for the first time in more than three decades. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children — more commonly known as WIC — will now provide low-income Americans with more options for culturally specific food, as well as increase funding for some healthy options.

WIC is a nutritional assistance program intended to help women and their babies afford healthy food. It diverges from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps, because it’s specifically targeted at improving healthy pregnancies and birth outcomes. This year, the program marked its 40th anniversary.
