Friday Open Thread: More African-American Firsts

sara_janewoodsn

Sarah Jane Woodson Early, born Sarah Jane Woodson (November 15, 1825 – August 1907), was an American educator, black nationalist, temperance activist and author. A graduate of Oberlin College, she was hired at Wilberforce College in 1858 as the first African-American woman college instructor.

She also taught for many years in community schools. After marrying in 1868 and moving to Tennessee with her minister husband Jordan Winston Early, she was principal of schools in four cities. Early served as national superintendent (1888–1892) of the black division of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and gave more than 100 lectures across five states. She wrote a biography of her husband and his rise from slavery that is included among postwar slave narratives.

Sarah Jane Woodson, the fifth daughter and youngest child of eleven of Jemima (Riddle) and Thomas C. Woodson (1790–1879), was born free in Chillicothe, Ohio on November 15, 1825. Her parents had moved to the free state of Ohio about 1821 from Virginia, where they had gained freedom from slavery.

They founded the first black Methodist church west of the Alleghenies. In 1830 the Woodsons were among founders of a separate black farming community called Berlin Crossroads, since defunct. The nearly two dozen families by 1840 established their own school, stores and churches. Her father and some brothers became black nationalists, which influenced Sarah Woodson’s activities as an adult.

Her father believed that he was the oldest son of Sally Hemings and President Thomas Jefferson; this tradition became part of the family’s oral history. It was not supported by known historical evidence. In 1998 DNA testing of descendants of the Jefferson, Hemings’ and Woodson male lines showed conclusively that there was no match between the Jefferson and Woodson lines; the Woodson male line did show western European paternal ancestry. According to historians at Monticello, no documents support the claim that Woodson was Hemings’ first child, as he appeared to have been born before any known child of hers.

In 1839 Sarah Woodson joined the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), founded in 1816 as the first independent black denomination in the United States. Her father and two older brothers, Lewis and John P., were ministers in the church. The Woodson family emphasized education for all their children. Sarah Jane and her older sister Hannah both attended Oberlin College; Sarah Jane completed the full program and graduated in 1856, among the first African-American women college graduates.

After graduation, she taught in black community schools in Ohio for several years. In 1863 she gave “Address to Youth,” to the Ohio Colored Teachers Association, one of a number of speeches she gave following the Emancipation Proclamation to urge African-American youth to join the “political and social revolutions.” She encouraged them to follow careers in education and the sciences to lead their race.

When hired in 1858 at Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Woodson became the first African-American woman college instructor. Her brother Rev. Lewis Woodson was a trustee and founder of the college. It had been established in 1855 to educate black youth, as a collaboration between the white and black leaders of the Cincinnati Methodist conference and the AME Church in Ohio, respectively. Sarah’s brother Lewis Woodson was among the original 24 founding trustees. Wilberforce closed for two years during the Civil War because of finances. It lost most of its nearly 200 subscription students at the beginning of the war, as they were mostly mixed-race children of wealthy planters from the South, who withdrew them at that time. During the war, the Cincinnati Methodist Conference could not offer its previous level of financial support, as it was called to care for soldiers and families.

The AME Church purchased the college and reopened it; this was the first African-American owned and operated college. Sarah Jane Woodson taught English and Latin. She also served as Lady Principal and Matron.

After the Civil War in 1868, Woodson began teaching in a new school for black girls established by the Freedmen’s Bureau in Hillsboro, North Carolina.

On September 24, 1868 Woodson at the age of 43 married the Reverend Jordan Winston Early, an AME minister who rose from slavery. Sarah and Jordan Early had no children.

Until his death in 1903, Sarah Early had helped her husband with his ministries in numerous towns in Tennessee, where she also taught community schools. She taught school for nearly four decades, as she believed education was critical for the advancement of the race. She served as principal of large schools in four cities as well.

Sarah W. Early became increasingly active in the women’s temperance movement, one of numerous reform activities of the nineteenth century. In 1888 she was elected for a four-year term as national superintendent of the Colored Division of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union; during her tenure, Early traveled frequently and gave more than 100 speeches to groups throughout a five-state region.

She died in 1907.

    FROM LUVVIE:
Khandi Alexander is Maya Lewis on Scandal and My Pope Family Theory
    [ 50 ] November 7, 2013 | Luvvie

A couple of days ago, it was revealed that veteran actress Khandi Alexander will be playing Olivia Pope’s mom, Maya Lewis on Scandal! It was an unexpected choice but an excellent one. Most of us didn’t e’em think about Khandi as we threw around names but when a little birdy told me about it on Friday (after my Who Should Play Olivia’s Mom? post went up), I was actually excited!

Phylicia Rashad and Lynn Whitfield seemed to be the overwhelming favorites for everyone when talmbout Rowan’s wife but Khandi makes sense. She’s an AWESOME actress with a lot of range and she knows how to get someone TOGETHER with a quickness. Plus, I could see her being related to Kerry Washington. I SEE’D IT!

Many people are saying she’s too young but don’t let that GOOD Black that don’t crack fool you. Miss Alexander is 56 years old, making her 20 years older than Kerry, meaning she could very well be her mother. If they need to age her up, there’s an app for that. It’s called MAKEUP!

        Black don’t crack

      • Town

Here’s the thing: if you take care of yourself, you can look good @ 56 too, no matter what your race is!

Stop tanning, stop drinking & smoking, stop piling tons of makeup on your face. Wear sunscreen & don’t use drugs. Exfoliate on a regular basis.

HOWEVER, you have to start doing these things in your TEENS. Trying it at 37 isn’t going to work.

If you sit outside baking in the sun in your teens/20s, drink/smoke/drug/party all the time in your teens/20s and generally don’t take even minimal care of your skin DO NOT BE SURPRISED when you look like a wrinkled up paper bag @ 38 years old!

        • jds09

I knew this white girl in high school that used to tan with Wesson Oil. I told her then that she was frying her skin and would pay for it when she got older. I will never forget how she responded, “yeah, but I look good now.”

          • Town

And she probably looks like the crispins at the bottom of a fried chicken bucket right now.

    LUVVIE’S SCANDAL RECAP:

Icarus and the Burning Truth: Scandal Episode 306 Recap

    [ 6 ] November 8, 2013 | Luvvie

Episode 6 of season 3 of Scandal was called Icarus. I’m a fan of Greek Mythology and I immediately recalled the story of the man whose father created wings so he could fly but he was warned not to get too high. He kept flying higher and higher and he got too close to the sun so the wax on the wings melted so he fell and drowned into the sea. I assumed it’d mean someone would get too close to the truth on Operation Remington and get burned.

Mama Memories – In a black and white scene from the past, little Olivia (with glasses) is at the kitchen table. Her mom (filmed in a blur) is getting ready to leave, so she hugs her (with what seemed like finality) and bounced. Peep the white blazer too.

–— double Wall Street’s forecast — despite a government shutdown that was expected to put a damper on hiring.

And hiring for September and August were revised up by a combined 60,000, the Labor Department said Friday.
The upwardly revised gains along with the big increase in hiring in
October suggest the economy might more strength than it has appeared.

    — – -(Reuters) - U.S. job growth unexpectedly accelerated in October as employers shrugged off a government shutdown, suggesting the budget standoff had a more limited impact on the economy than initially feared.

Employers added 204,000 new jobs to their payrolls last month, the Labor Department said on Friday. The unemployment rate, however rose to 7.3 percent from September’s nearly five-year low of 7.2 percent.

The department said there had been no “discernible” impact on payrolls from the 16-day federal government shutdown, adding that it had received an above average response rate from employers to its survey.

    – -The report also showed 60,000 more jobs created in September and August than previously reported, suggesting that the

Guns & Ammo Editor Apologizes for Pro-Gun Control Column, Steps Down
By: Michael Sebastian Published: November 07, 2013

Jim Bequette, the editor in chief of Guns & Ammo, issued an abject apology Thursday for the magazine’s recent editorial advocating gun regulation, saying he would resign immediately from his post atop the firearms magazine.

The author of the column, contributing editor Dick Metcalf, was also shown the door, Mr. Bequette said in his letter of apology.

“I made a mistake by publishing the column,” Mr. Bequette said in the letter, which was posted to the Guns & Ammo website. “I thought it would generate a healthy exchange of ideas on gun rights. I miscalculated, pure and simple. I was wrong, and I ask your forgiveness.”

Obama: ‘No Way’ Would I Swap VP Biden For Hillary Clinton

President Barack Obama said Thursday that he would have rejected his campaign staff’s idea to possibly switch former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in for Vice President Joe Biden on the 2012 Democratic ticket if he had known about it.

“If they had asked me, I would have said there is no way that I’m not
running again with Joe Biden. Because I genuinely believe that he has been one of the best vice presidents in our history,” Obama told
NBC’s Chuck Todd. “He also happens to be a friend. He also happens to be one of my most important advisers on domestic and foreign policy. I like him. When my back’s up against the wall, he has my back.”[...]

It was a textbook example of a corporation looking to buy an election
result. After spending $1 million in a failed attempt to stifle local
energy freedom in 2011, Xcel Energy poured over $500,000 of ratepayer money into a ballot measure to hamstring Boulder, Colo.’s exploration of a locally owned alternative to the largely fossil-fueled monopoly utility.

On Tuesday, people power buried Xcel. By a margin of 2-to-1, Boulder voters resoundingly rejected Question 310. As Stephen Fenberg of New Era Colorado said late that night, “Go home, Xcel. Your money is
    no good here.”[....]

    PBOMB♥ – — -MR. PRESIDENT:—

    - –Obama to push infrastructure boost in New Orleans- –

    — – - -President Obama will argue that infrastructure improvements are necessary to facilitate growth in U.S. exports and jobs creation during a trip to the Port of New Orleans on Friday.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama would use the trip to “talk about the need to build infrastructure as part of a broader effort to strengthen our economy for the long term and to increase exports.”

“The virtue of investment in infrastructure is that it’s a double win because you get the immediate effect of building and the jobs created from that, and the economic energy and activity created by that, and then the long-term benefit to the economy of improved infrastructure,” Carney added.

A White House official on Thursday said that the president was taking that message to New Orleans because of the central role the Mississippi River plays in American exports.

Exports from the region have increased 140 percent since the president took office, fueled primarily by the nation’s domestic energy production. The administration has said it wants to double exports nationwide by 2015.

He’ll also highlight his “Fix-it-First” plan, which would invest some $50
billion immediately in the nation’s infrastructure, focused on addressing maintenance projects that have been deferred with state and federal budgets stretched thin.

Walmart Is Trying to Block Workers’ Disability Benefits

Last week, amidst a deluge of criticism about Walmart’s poverty-level wages, the retail giant announced promotions for 25,000 of its roughly 1.3 million US employees. But although Walmart has raised pay for some of its employees, it is simultaneously fighting to convince the Supreme Court to allow it to more easily avoid paying disability benefits.[....]

In the Heimeshoff case, the Supreme Court could very well decide that the matter should instead be resolved by the Department of Labor or individual state legislatures. Then again, the high court could take a cue from its 2011 decision in Walmart v. Dukes. In that case, the Supreme Court allowed Walmart to block its female workers’ sex discrimination claims by changing the rules governing class action lawsuits.

FCC Proposes $33 M In Penalties Against Three Lifeline Providers

Investigations by the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau found that the companies apparently violated the FCC’s rules limiting Lifeline subscriptions to one subscriber per household, and received payments for thousands of consumers that already were obtaining Lifeline service from the same company. [....] Specifically, Notices of Apparent Liability, or NALs, were issued against:

*Conexions Wireless – $18.4 million for apparent violations over the course of eight months in Arkansas, Maryland, and West Virginia.
    * i-wireless – $8.8 million for apparent violations over seven months in Ohio, Illinois, North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, New York, Indiana, and South Carolina.
*True Wireless – $5.5 million for apparent violations over eight months in Arkansas, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Texas.[....]

The FCC also proposed a penalty of $300,000 against Conexions for its apparent willful and repeated failure to provide timely and complete responses to the FCC’s requests for information, noting that Conexions’ conduct delayed and impeded the Bureau’s investigation.[....]

I know it’s Huffin Puffin, but this is decent article that breaks down the history of racism at Barney’s and retail racism in general….

Barneys Racist Culture Deeply Ingrained In Store, Insiders Say
    Posted: 11/07/2013 7:27 am EST | Updated: 11/07/2013 6:13 pm EST

On the sales floor at the Madison Avenue flagship store of Barneys
New York, salespeople would joke about customers who, in their view,
    didn’t belong.

Often, those jokes would be aimed at the black customers, a former sales associate at the store told The Huffington Post.

The former employee, who spoke on condition she not be named for fear of jeopardizing her career in the industry, said she heard sales staff and security repeatedly rip on black shoppers: “Their card is probably not going to go through,” they’d say. “I don’t know why they come in here and want to try stuff on that they know they’re not going to buy.”

“If a black person comes in with a sweatshirt or sneakers, some of the
white sales associates would be on the floor saying: ‘Why are they even here? They’re probably going to scam,’” said the former associate, who is black and worked at the store in 2012 and 2013. “They would say this stuff in front of me. Sometimes I would just walk away, and sometimes I would say, ‘You never know.’”

More hospitals improve quality of care

[....] Last week during a webcast detailing the results of its annual report, the Joint Commission said 1,099 Joint Commission-accredited hospitals were named in its report as Top Performer on Key Quality Measures hospitals, representing a 77 percent increase from last year. Of those 1,099 top performers, 424 organizations have achieved the distinction for two years in a row and 182 have achieved it every year since the program’s inception in 2011.

According to the report, the Joint Commission bases its top performing designation on a hospital’s accountability measures for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma care, inpatient psychiatric services, venous thromboembolism care, stroke care and immunization.[....]

    – - – -Physical beatings and threats to RAPE his sister: Theshocking extent of bullying Jonathan Martin allegedly suffered from Dolphins teammates he tried to befriend

    — – - -A lawyer for Miami Dolphins player Jonathan Martin revealed further shocking details on Thursday about the bullying he suffered at the hands of teammates.
Martin walked out on the Dolphins last week after reportedly suffering a catalog of abuse, including a racist voice mail message from fellow player Richie Incognito, who has been suspended.

Lawyer David Cornwell said in a statement that along with Incognito calling Martin a “half-n*****’ in a voicemail, another unidentified player threatened to rape Martin’s sister.

    —- SNIP — -
Part of the violent and vulgar threat, directed at Martin’s sister, included the words: ‘She loves me. I am going to f*** her without a condom.’
Martin’s lawyer did not specify to ESPN whether the words were said to Martin or if it was a voice-mail or text. He also claimed that the player had suffered a ‘malicious physical attack’.

The statement continues: ‘Jonathan endured harassment that went far beyond the traditional locker room hazing. For the entire season-and-a-half that he was with the Dolphins, he attempted to befriend the same teammates who subjected him to the abuse with the hope that doing so would end the harassment.

    @LOLGOP
I thought the fun part of reporting on #Benghazi is that you didn’t need actual sources.

  • gn

The black unemployment rate is not good; I’m sorry: the recovery is not reaching the black community. I’m a little dismayed at the lack of urgency which Dems are displaying; it really shouldn’t be viewed as okay or normal for the black community to have numbers like this. And IIRC this cuts across all income and educational levels; something targeted is in order. I barely see this even discussed outside of the vendetta-driven (and discredited) sole patrol, and that’s dismaying. Dems do a lot right, but have fallen off in this regard. Hope to see a change.

    • Miranda

The downsizing of public workers has been really hard on the black middle/working class in particular. I’d like to hear some workable proposals to target this myself because there have been none from the usual suspects. I don’t even know what doable solution there is because nothing’s been put forth for debate. Where are the black economists, labor experts to propose ANYTHING??

      • TyrenM

I was thinking about this the other day. Especially y’alls reporting on the Post Office and the hell they’re catching even with the holiday season coming.

        • Miranda

Good questions…I know we are VERY far behind when it comes to the tech world.

          • creolechild

We outrank other groups in technology use but haven’t crossed the divide to access jobs in that field, which makes me think that the emphasis should be focused on getting public school students, community college and four-year students on the technology path.

          • gn

With training, I think we could be a major force in that field.

          • creolechild

That’s why WE should be planting the seeds early, and often, in the minds of our young ones as an attainable goal that pays well and one they’re already involved in–to some extent. No one does creativity like us…no one!

          • conlakappa

We actually used to be heavily in the field, when it was a side industry. When I was in school, the black and woman engineering major was computers. Then they became central to our lives and white men white-manned their way in.

          • gn

Really interesting. I know little about grant programs, but what do you think about a large-scale initiative to partner HBCUs with tech startups?

          • conlakappa

There is work already happening with HBCUs and with community colleges too. I don’t know the reporting process or the matrices for success. A lot of money has been put aside for STEM for a couple of decades now. Part of the problem was that people didn’t know where to find the information/that there is program money in not-top-of-the-mind places. It was a black military officer who was a White House fellow in the previous administration who came up with the idea of having centralized grant information. Until that point, no one had given it serious thought or saw the value of the effort.

          • qosine

Very informative, conlakappa. Good to know this. Thx.

        • creolechild

Here’s an article from earlier this year that discusses involving our communities in green jobs and technology.

D.C. conference brings together emerging leaders in green jobs

[....] “If no one is going to do it, why not us,” proclaimed Green Door Initiative President and CEO Donele Wilkins of Detroit, whose organization has worked to clean up “brown fields” left behind after factories closed own years ago in several areas of the city.[....] “We [Blacks] for the most part aren’t engaged in those conversations. So how can we ensure that we are?[....]

Started in 2006, Greater Bridgeport (Conn.) Community Enterprises President-CEO Adrienne Farrar Houel said her organization “at the time was filling a gap…bringing out low-income folk into the employment sector but through green jobs.” Now the nonprofit is creating “living wage green economy jobs” or what Houel called “triple bottom line businesses,” such as the mattress deconstruction business her group created in 2011. “We have trained over 200 people, and created 33 new jobs through our company,” she said.

Akill West’s Reclamation Energy LLC is located in southeast Washington, D.C.,[....] He added that today’s junior high and high
school students aren’t being told that they need to learn the necessary skills for future cyber security, computer technology and green technology jobs. “Too many people in our community are standing behind or championing transient construction jobs on a project that will be finished in two years,” added West.[....] However if “a true green economy” is to emerge in the Black community, it is now necessary for more Blacks to see it beyond the oft-believed notion that the green movement only involves saving trees.

I think that’s exactly right. And if the workers affected by the shutdown were counted as unemployed last month, I’d imagine this is reflected in the numbers as well. The sole patrol is a non-starter because they’re just using this crisis to pursue personal garbage and pose/peacock. I would LOVE to see experts weigh in on how, in the context of the public sector contracting due to the GOP, the recovery can be better extended to the black population. One thing to note is that the WH has been working diligently to restore the manufacturing sector which employs a disproportionate amount of black people. I can only imagine what the rate would be like if that were not the case. I just wish that the leadership across the board would develop more of a sense of urgency about this issue. I hope to see that.

I also wonder how the criminal justice reform is effecting the overall numbers. This is just a snapshot of how that effects us way more than any other demographic group:

          http://www.motherjones.com/files/Screen%20shot%202013-08-08%20at%205.21.31%20PM.png

          • gn

That’s an interesting graphic, but I don’t think that the absolute numbers are large enough to have an effect on the employment numbers. The success of that reform is gratifying though. But I don’t think that it will move the distressing unemployment rate.

Aqua, I wonder if unemployed veterans and military spouses are aware of these services:

Now this is not scientific, I have no poll to back this up. However, I have noticed that open racism has come back in style. Every since it was known that BO would become president. I have personally noticed this and so has many of my friends and family members.

      • gn

There’s definitely a racist backlash. Actually it was even measured right before the elections, and the prevalence of racism had increased since 2008. Couple that with the thinking that black people have “arrived,” and there’s a major piece of the puzzle re: why the recovery is not reaching the black community. This is why I caution against the approach which assumes that just working to fix the economy will somehow trickle down to black people. Racism is a barrier here, and so a much more targeted approach is necessary IMO, as is a sense of urgency. Your comment is nothing but the TRUTH.

For people complaining about glitches, etc., please show me your ACA and receipts from people able to get insurance and healthcare due to your efforts. If you don’t have that, help yourself to a seat and a hot toddy of STFU.

Random thought about today’s media…. I read someplace about the relationship between advertisers and viewership and the WWF. They have a large viewership but it doesn’t translate into prime advertising dollars cause their viewership is low income. If true, this could happen to cable news and the so-called news programs, another death by a thousand cuts.

Thank you PBomb for highlighting Sarah Jane Woodson, who, with her husband, brought her teaching talents to Tennessee!

“Until his death in 1903, Sarah Early had helped her husband with his ministries in numerous towns in Tennessee, where she also taught community schools. She taught school for nearly four decades, as she believed education was critical for the advancement of the race. She served as principal of large schools in four cities as well.”

    — – -Police probe website targeting crime witnesses

    - —Philadelphia police and prosecutors are investigating an anonymous Instagram account with thousands of followers that for months has been identifying witnesses in violent crimes across the city – aiming, in its creator’s words, to “expose rats.”

The account, called rats215, has outed more than 30 witnesses since February, posting photos, police statements, and testimony on the photo-sharing website.

Because many of the statements posted aren’t public records, authorities are investigating the page as a potential act of mass
witness intimidation – in a city where police and prosecutors struggle
daily to find witnesses willing to testify.

    —–SNIP – -
—–It remains unclear how rats215 obtained that witness’ testimony. The account-holder routinely asks followers to send along paperwork on suspected “rats.”

Though witness statements are sometimes available in court records
when a case is closed, the names of witnesses and victims are redacted for their protection.
But in copies of statements posted on the account, witnesses are
clearly and repeatedly named, sometimes with their photographs attached.

Obama Administration To Issue Long-Awaited Rules Requiring Equal Coverage For Mental Health Care

On Friday, the Obama administration will issue long-awaited final rules requiring all private American insurance plans — in the individual, group, and employer markets — to cover mental health treatments on equal footing with more traditional physical medical care.

The new rules are the final step in implementing the 2008 Wellstone-Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and add to Affordable Care Act requirements that will extend mental health benefits to millions of Americans for the first time, making the regulations one of the single biggest expansions of mental health coverage in American history.[....]

    Incognito investigated for molestation
    Updated: November 8, 2013, 10:18 AM ET

Recently suspended offensive lineman Richie Incognito was investigated last year for harassing a volunteer at the Miami Dolphins’ annual golf tournament by allegedly molesting her with a golf club, according to Aventura, Fla., police.

The original police report states that the alleged incident
happened at the Turnberry Resort & Club in Aventura, but no charges were filed against Incognito.

The 34-year-old volunteer told police Incognito had been
drinking and was “acting very inappropriate towards her,” and that
she went to police after Incognito said he wouldn’t apologize.

The report states that the volunteer told police that Incognito
“used his golf club to touch her by rubbing it up against her vagina, then up her stomach then to her chest. He then used the club to knock a pair of sunglasses off the top of her head.

“After that, he proceeded to lean up against her buttocks
with his private parts as if dancing, saying ‘Let it rain! Let it rain!’”
the report states. “He finally finished his inappropriate behavior by
emptying bottled water in her face.”

Michigan 25 by 25 Ballot Initiative Would Double State’s Green Jobs

[....] The MSU study, “Projected Job and Investment Impacts of Policy Requiring 25% Renewable Energy by 2025 in Michigan,” found that increasing the state RES would create at least 74,500 new green collar jobs, and potentially up to 113,850 jobs. Specifically, the RES would create 31,500 construction jobs, 43,000 operations and maintenance jobs, and around 4,200 manufacturing jobs.

A Bureau of Labor Statistics analysis published in March found that Michigan currently has 80,000 green collar jobs, meaning the RES would at least double the state’s green workforce. In addition, the ballot measure would create more than $10 billion in new investments.

The 6 GOP Governors Democrats Hope To Unseat In 2014

Democratic Governors Associations Chairman Peter Shumlin (D) told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor-sponsored meeting on Thursday that Democrat Terry McAuliffe’s victory in this week’s Virginia gubernatorial election is spurring Democrats to go on the offensive in 2014.[....] Below is the ambitious list of governorships Shumlin said Democrats want to retake from the GOP:

    Wisconsin: Gov. Scott Walker[....]

    Ohio: Gov. John Kasich[....]
