Obama campaign manager Messina to earn Machiavelli award
By Justin Sink – 01/18/13 07:59 AM ET
President Obama’s re-election campaign manager is set to receive the “Machiavelli Award,” an honor granted by the Italian American Democratic Leadership Council, at an event Sunday afternoon.

The group, which is co-chaired by former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo and former Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.), among others, will convey the honor to Jim Messina at a dinner at a Washington, D.C. Italian restaurant.

According to a press release obtained by the Washington Post, the council says the “award honors the legacy of Niccolo Machiavelli, the first political scientist and showcases a current political mastermind.”

      He deserves it! Go Messina!!!

    • TyrenM

Down with Messina. Oberstar and Cuomo too. DLC? Not so much.

First political scientist? The people who “discovered” what they accidentally bumped into (nevermind already populated) are once again trying to claim what’s Ours.

      • jziglar

Former Governor Mario Cuomo was never part of the DLC. Now his son you can argue is but his father was a true blue liberal Democrat. The speech he gave at the DNC in 1984 attacking Reagan for his policies that hurt the poor and middle class was one of the top speeches in convention history.

        • TyrenM

          Hey Jzig,
This wasn’t a knock on Mario C. I remember that 1984 speech. Oberstar was a staunch Blue lib for MN. We both agree on DLC and Third Way.
This was more directed to Euros claiming stuff that isn’t theirs.

    – – -Valerie Jarrett for the defense – –

    — – – – – – -EXCERPTS – – –

“The reality is that this president has been surrounded by strong women his entire life,” she said. “Early on, women who had not been a part of the campaign came and worked in the White House, and they don’t know the president. … What the president wants is for people to come in and fight for their ideas — not so that they win, but because he will make better decisions if they’re advocating and telling him what they think. … So, I say, ‘Speak up! Speak up!’ ”

(PHOTOS: 39 great photos from Obama’s first term)

–On her wall is a birthday gift from her boss – a frame containing the original petition to give women the vote in 1866, and the final resolution passed by Congress in 1919 – 53 years later. “Valerie,” Obama wrote. “You are carrying on a legacy of strong women making history! Happy Birthday, Barack Obama.”

    – –>Jarrett takes on the complaints of women who have worked in the West Wing head on, particularly the notion that you have to be able to shoot hoops, or play golf or talk shop or be a poker shark to gain the president’s confidence. “I don’t play golf. I don’t play basketball. I don’t really like cards,” she said. “I don’t think anybody questions whether or not I have a role to play here. And so I think it is irrelevant whether the president wants to do that in some of his free time. What’s really important is when we have something to say, does he listen to us? And he does.”

    Organizing for Action
First Read has more on last night’s news that Obama for America is reorganizing as a tax exempt advocacy group called Organizing for Action.

“Organizing for Action will be set up as a 501c4 group, but we are told the group will have full disclosure of its donors (either monthly or quarterly); setting it up a 501c4 (as opposed to a Super PAC) makes it easier to legally coordinate with the White House. But the Obama folks are conceding a big point here: They can’t do the things they want to do (like the organizing, etc.) inside the Democratic Party. If this version of OFA is successful, we’re also told then don’t be surprised if this becomes Obama’s personal vehicle post-presidency, a la Bill Clinton’s Clinton Global Initiative.”

I’m down. Community Organizer In Chief…doin’ it!

    • jds09

This is so huge…it will dwarf the Clinton Initiative. Organizing for Action is about money and BOOTS ON THE GROUND! It’s an alternative/supplement to Unions (who bring the boots to GOTV) and gives a portion of the populace the power to lobby. This is a genius move. It’s a game changer.

    • nellcote

It’s a shame the msm choose to ignore PBO’s DNC speech. It was a profound Call to Citizenship. For everyday people to participate in their own governance. This seems to be a continuation of that path and ultimately what he’s been about all along.

      Changing the way Washington works…check.

      • Aquagranny911

I listened very carefully. I think a whole lot of us did & PBO continues the message with every speech he gives. He certainly emphasized that in his gun regulation/responsibility speech on Wednesday.

BTW, I’m not using the word “control” at all in my crusade for some sanity in the madness of gun issues. IMO, it is totally a RWNJ “trigger” word for the nutbuckets. I’ve been saying things like “responsibility” “accountability” “sensibility” “mature & reasoned response to violence from guns in this country” etc.

    • Town

‘Firearms instructor’ hired as school guard leaves handgun in student bathroom
    By David Edwards
    Friday, January 18, 2013 9:26 EST

A prosecutor in Lapeer, Michigan says, “No harm, no foul,” after a charter school took the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) advice and hired a armed security guard who promptly left his handgun unattended in a student bathroom.

Chatfield School co-directors Matt Young and Bill Kraly announced last week that they had hired retired Lapeer County Sheriff’s Dept. firearms instructor Clark Arnold as a security guard in response to the December mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

“It’s a tremendous asset to the safety of our students,” Young told WNEM in a report that aired on Tuesday.

But by Wednesday, the school had admitted to The Flint Journal that the retired firearms instructor had made a “made a breach in security protocol” and left his unloaded handgun unattended in the school restroom “for a few moments.”

Cornyn: Congress will not allow default

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the Republican whip, said in Houston Thursday that Congress will not allow an impasse over raising the debt ceiling to result in the federal government defaulting on its spending obligations.

“We will raise the debt ceiling. We’re not going to default on our debt,” Cornyn told the Houston Chronicle editorial board.

Cornyn’s fellow Republicans, particularly in the House, have been trying to use the issue of the debt ceiling to force President Obama to agree to spending cuts.

    – –SNIP – – –

There’s nothing funny or ironic about violent threats, but it’s worth noting that dangerous and threatening rhetoric takes on a whole other dimension when the person responsible for it is a gun owner. And yet, Keene and his organization continue to oppose attempts by President Obama and the left — the same people he blames for his death threats — to disarm the kinds of people who do things like issue death threats to other people.

Meanwhile, Keene and the NRA have been conspicuously absent in issuing condemnations of their own members who have threatened lawmakers who support more gun regulations in the last few weeks.

    Good afternoon POU!

Obama Administration Seeks To Bypass Citizens United, Expose Corporate Money In Politics To Public Scrutiny

With Congress so divided, the chances of any amendment to overturn Citizens United are slim. However, there are options available to minimize the problems of corporate personhood and unfettered money in the political system.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the government agency tasked with monitoring and regulating corporations, is now evaluating new rules which would put pressure on corporations to not attempt to manipulate elections. By requiring all political donations from public corporations to be publicly disclosed, the main concerns of the Citizens United decision, of unlimited, anonymous money, possibly from foreign governments, the SEC throws a wrench into the whole dark money laundering scheme.[….]

Four years later, feminists split by Michelle Obama’s ‘work’ as first lady

In the opening moments of her second turn at history, as Michelle Obama waves at celebrants along Pennsylvania Avenue, Americans will clamor to see the first lady, who remains one of the most popular public figures in the country. In the most recent poll, fully 73 percent said they approve of the way she is handling her job.

But a significant group of Americans — feminist Americans — have been vocally disappointed with her choices and feel let down by her example.

In 2008, when Obama announced her intention to be “mom-in-chief,” many feminists decried her decision to give up her career and said she had been victimized by her husband’s choices. She was regarded as one of the women feminist Linda Hirshman described as “letting down the team.”

But most black feminists and writers had a different view. Let the sister get settled, they said. Give her a minute to do a head count. And if she wanted to focus on motherhood, for black women that was more than fine. It was arguably revolutionary, because black women were long denied the right — or lacked the means — to simply care for their own.

TRANSLATION: MICHELLE OBAMA IS A LAZY ASSHOLE WHO DOESN’T WORK, NOT LIKE OUR HARD WORKING SHE-RO HILLARY CLINTON.

Slow news day at the Washington Post?

        • Town

Just trying to dampen enthusiasm for this weekend’s inauguration festivities.

They seem to be working many angles in that pursuit, don’t they?

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Considering that Hillary chose to stay with a philandering husband so she could ride on his coattails to move up the political ladder, I would say she’s the anti-thesis of feminism.

        • Aquagranny911

Agreed! Except there is a small part of me that believes she might actually love old Billy Boy in her own way. I’ve known some strong women who stayed with a run around husband & never could figure it but some part of love.

        • Tafr

          There it is! Thank you.

        • GN

To me, I couldn’t care less that Hillary stayed. From a womanist standpoint, all I care about is the fact that Hillary could have left his crusty ass had she so desired and not have had to worry about getting work, or feeding her child, or being stigmatized with a scarlet letter for being divorced, or being physically harmed by a hubby bent while the authorities completely looked the other way. That’s the point. That she stayed is because she wanted to for her own reasons, and chose to. There’s still a ways to go in terms of making sure that *every woman* is afforded those same opportunities to choose life paths. Feminism shouldn’t be about replacing one narrow set of “acceptable” behaviors with another, which is why the feminists in that article sound so ridiculous. It really should be about women being respected as adults and making our own decisions.

          • Aquagranny911

Dang! You nailed it again! What some don’t realize is that not all women really have a lot of choices. Some just have to play out the hand they get dealt in this life, doing the best they can.

          • GN

Exactly, that’s the problem right there. Not every woman with a philandering husband can leave him without devastating financial and sometimes physical repercussions to herself and/or her children. Until the choices which Hillary was afforded re: whether to keep her marriage or toss it, or the current First Lady is afforded re: work outside the home or in it, are afforded to every woman, there’s still way too much work to do for folks to be sitting around bullshitting and feeding WaPo stupid quotes.

          • conlakappa

Every day the First Lady shows up black, they have to question their self-proclaimed status as the representatives of women. Or womyn, as it were. They don’t get to determine what defines a woman. Too bad, so sad.

        • BoomerGal

Well, Bill was mighty glad she stayed, I’m sure, or his career would’ve been pretty much over.

    • MsKitty

I’ve made it clear how I feel about feminists and their if you don’t fit our white upper middle class paradigm you don’t count.

But to reiterate, fuck them all with a rusty pitchfork.

      • Aquagranny911

      FROM THE SAME ARTICLE:

“Feminists who wish that Obama would strike a blow for feminism and against stereotyped roles of women, too easily forget that all women are not burdened by the same stereotypes,” wrote Tami Winfrey Harris in a September article, “A Black Mom-in-Chief is Revolutionary: What White Feminists Get Wrong about Michelle Obama,” for the online magazine Clutch.

      …………………………………………………

“I just have a problem with the idea that Michelle Obama doesn’t work,” says author Joan Morgan, a visiting scholar at Stanford University. “It’s a basic anti-feminist argument to say the work she does in making sure her family is okay — that the girls are healthy and not caught up in the craziness of celebrity and acting out — is not valuable work.”

Morgan contends that some white feminists are unable to see beyond their own narrative. “Michelle is deeply personal to black women,” Morgan says, and if white feminists “took a modicum of interest in what black women’s lives were like, and took some time to learn about them, then we wouldn’t always end up in this place where there’s an issue or person that seems so polarizing, and we wouldn’t be standing on opposite sides of the chasm.

This so match, my dad was in the army which meant most of the time he was either in the field training or overseas when he was on active duty. My dad got off active duty in I think 1994 which meant my mom spent being a single parent for the most part for three kinds under the age of 10. However when my dad was in the reserves/ national guard he was still away for two weekends a month.

My mom is amazing not only she also when my dad got a job in Virgina drove my brother sister and I, three kids under the age of 12 in 1996 all the way from Missouri to Virginia by herself.

Now, I’m a man and I maybe a little outta pocket here, but shouldn’t these “feminists” focus on I dunno, U.S. Representatives, State Legislators, U.S. Senators, Governors, etc. who are women for anyone to be the feminist candidate for 2016 instead of the First Lady of the United States? I mean, one, Michelle never said she wanted to be in politics. She never went out there saying that she would ever run for the senate in Illinois or anything. These feminists need to understand that unlike Hillary Clinton, Michelle never wanted to encroach on her husbands job. I guess I’m stupid though, since I always thought being a feminist meant having the ability to doing your own thing.

      • Aquagranny911

Walk right in! Excellent comment! Thank you!

When I was is middle school, I asked my mother about feminism. Her response was burned on my brain.

“Feminism rode the coat-tails of the civil rights movement. It’s nothing but a family fight between white men and white women. I wish my black ass could stay at home and take care of my kids, ” she said.

      Nutshell.

      • creolechild

In this country, societal norms for middle-class and wealthy women determined that a woman’s place is in the home. For black women, immigrants, and poor white women…it has always been been the complete opposite! If you look at the history of AFDC (now referred to as TANF), it was created in 1935 as a small part of The Social Security Act during the Great Depression. Its purpose was twofold in nature: providing financial assistance to widows and mothers with children to ensure that they could take care of their dependents AND removing women from the labor force during a period of high unemployment so that men could fill positions that were becoming available through FDR’s New Deal policies.

It’s also important to note that black men did not fare well under the New Deal, in large part, due to racism. This factor made it necessary for black women (who were excluded from AFDC by the federal government’s policies ) to find work wherever they could–usually housekeeping and/or as migrant farm workers. By the early to mid-1960s, civil rights attorneys began challenging these policies in courts, with mixed success.

As GN pointed out: It’s about CHOICE! And usually black women, immigrants, and poor white women didn’t have the luxury of deciding because their families’ economic survival depended on their ability to endure missing all the moments with their children that they would never get back, doing back breaking work for low pay and trying to maintain their dignity while being treated as less than in most cases by women who had the option of staying home. White feminists bring nothing to the table in this discussion because they have no clue whatsoever about what it means to do what you have to so that you and yours survive. And they damn sure can’t claim to be speaking for all women or most women because they’re only interested in representing those who share their very narrow and privileged perspective of the world. When they learn how to respect the choices and decisions of ALL women, I *might* take a minute to listen to what they have to say. Other than that…they can miss me with their neverending nonsense…

      From the article

Feminist discontent with the first lady spiked again last summer at the Democratic National Convention, after she called her daughters “the heart of my heart and the center of my world.” She then repeated her feminist crazy-maker: “You see, at the end of the day, my most important title is still ‘mom-in-chief.’ ”

—————————————————————————————–These are some bitter jealous ass white women. They are so damn mad that this beautiful black woman is loved by so many hell yes they are mad. The fact that these crazy bitches were not called out for their utter disdain for mothers is outrageous. How the hell you gonna take issue with a mother stating that her children are the center of her world? I mean are you fucking kidding me? Any mother that does not wake up each and every day with the thought that her children are her first priority aint worth shit! I hope none of these silly women have children. Matter of fact they should make it their priority not to have kids, adopt kids etc. Now I know why so many of these unicorn left clowns are sooo fucked up.

That any feminists are still agitating against Michelle Obama for any reason is really pathetic at this point. This is now beyond the classic race divides and is into common sense and what it means to be a feminist.

What the First Lady represents to me is CHOICE. And choice should be heralded by all feminists of all persuasions, because misogyny is primarily about control. The issue for me was never about whether housework versus office/factory/farm etc. work was more valuable or more suitable for women. The issue is that for many years, we had no CHOICE. Many African American women because of the economic brutality visited upon our men and our desirability as domestics, had no choice but to leave the home and work. That goes for numerous other communities of color in this country as well. On the flip side, our country has a history of boxing (mainly white) women into a very narrow and circumscribed lifestyles which complemented a misogynistic and women-fearing point of view.

The First Lady worked when she chose to support her husband’s ambitions, and the First Lady has taken full advantage of her right to CHOOSE to stay home with her babies. This is why one reason of so many that I’m just so glad that she’s there, and she’s visible. Because it shows girls that you can do what you want, you can walk to the beat of your own drum, you don’t have to fit into the narrow roles that anyone, whether a misogynist or a well-meaning but misquided lefty activist, tries to force you into.

That these folks in that article and the media still can’t seem to grasp that is at this point just ridiculous.

Michelle Obama is a strong woman and just because she doesn’t act like Hillary Clinton ( a woman who is so desperate that she will do anything for power) doesn’t make her a fake person.

      • BoomerGal

Hillary’s got the power and knows it but that’s not the point. I, too, am disgusted by faux outrage of white feminists. Michelle is an attorney and a professional in her own right. She doesn’t have to prove anything to anybody.

Retirement Savings Accounts Draw U.S. Consumer Bureau Attention

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is weighing whether it should take on a role in helping Americans manage the $19.4 trillion they have put into retirement savings, a move that would be the agency’s first foray into consumer investments.[….] The retirement savings business in the U.S. is dominated by a group of companies that handle record-keeping and management of investments in tax-advantaged vehicles like 401(k) plans and individual retirement accounts.

The group includes Fidelity Investments, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Charles Schwab Corp. and T. Rowe Price Group Inc. Americans held $19.4 trillion in retirement assets as of Sept. 30, 2012, according to the Investment Company Institute, an industry association; about $3.5 trillion of that was in 401(k) plans.[….]

California teams up with Amtrak on high-speed rail

[….] Today, Amtrak announced it is teaming up with the California High-Speed Rail Authority to find trains that would run at up to 220 mph along both the West Coast and East Coast corridors. By combining their buying power, they could both save serious resources as they look to purchase about 60 trains over the next 10 years — and the partnership could make California’s high-speed rail look a little less pie-in-the-sky.[….]

New trains could cost $35 million to $55 million each, according to Amtrak, and the feds aren’t feeding California any more rail cash. Meanwhile, on the East Coast, Amtrak needs upwards of $150 billion and 30 years to upgrade 457 miles of non-speedy track. Private investment won’t meet that initial need, says Amtrak, so it’s seeking taxpayer funding.[….]

On January 13, 2013, Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-Connecticut) introduced H.R. 226.IH, “Support Assault Firearms Elimination and Reduction for our Streets Act,” a bill that will amend the 1996 IRS tax code and “allow a credit against tax for surrendering to authorities certain assault weapons.” [….] The bill was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means on January 14, 2013.

People who turn in assault weapons can receive a $1.000 tax credit per year for two years, for a total credit of $2,000. Among the weapons included in the bill is the Bushmaster AR-15 that was used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Connecticut. I thought I had posted this earlier; if so, sorry for the re-post:

    (ahem)

I’m just a man, but I thought feminism was about choices.
The First Lady has made her choice, so why is this a problem for some feminists?
I think that this is more a problem for some feminists than it is for Michelle Obama.

100% on point. Had I seen this, I wouldn’t have posted a novel in place of what you were able to say so succinctly.

      • Admiral_Komack

I read your post, and your post is on point.

        Keep up the good work.
