Friday Open Thread: West Wing Week

West Wing Week 11/29/13 or, “Kindness Covers All of My Political Beliefs”

  • rikyrah

    Good Morning Everyone.
Where is everyone? Out doing Black Friday sales?

    • crazycanuck

Good Morning rikyrah, they are probably all in a vegatative state lol.

      • Alma98

Morning cc! I didn’t eat like a mad woman yesterday but I plan on eating leftovers today.

    • Miranda

I’m recovering….bout to run up my “presshua” with a honey baked ham sammich for breakfast.

      • Alma98

        Morning Miranda! LOL

        • Miranda

I will be eating one for lunch in about 30 minutes too! LOL

          • Alma98

I will be eating some turkey, ribs and potato salad lol. I have to go to my mom’s for the turkey I hid it and forgot it lol.

          • conlakappa

My mother’s siblings were always hiding food at my grandparents’s house at the holidays then leaving it behind. A forgotten piece of pie is not a good discovery two weeks later!

          • Alma98

            LOL!

    • Alma98

      Morning rikyrah:)
I don’t do black Friday, I’m not getting stomped on for something the store only has 4or 5 of.

  • JojoRaze

    I’m here…sane and in a non-vegetative state!

    • conlakappa

I just stopped by. My usual amount of sane and not having overeaten. Will be trying to get my hair done and a massage today or tomorrow. That short week kicked my butt. The weeks before Christmas promise the same.

    • Alma98

      Morning Jojo! lol

  • Miranda
    • Kennymack1971

The hell? It says a lot that no one actually put their name behind this BS. “Mediaite Staff”….uh huh.

      • gn

There are a pocket of hard core right wingers at that site; doesn’t surprise me that one of them is trying to defend Logan.

      • jds09

This was ghost-written by Logan’s mother. That’s my guess.

        • Alma98

          lol

        • crazycanuck

          lol, or Logan herself

    • Alma98

There’s one troll named Noesis1 with ods running up & down the thread acting a fool. And of course he can’t spell lol.

Good Friday MornTin’ ALEXANDER2♥/POU FAM♥- — ***BIG HUG** :>)- —REAL FAST: :>) FROM the White House: :>)

    – - –Obama: Sasha will have say on 2016 move – - – -Awwww –

—- -For the Obamas, the big question for 2016 is: Should we stay or should we go?
And according to President Barack Obama, the decision will rest with first lady Michelle and his youngest daughter Sasha.
    :>)

    — -“’Cause she’s, you know, obviously they — and Michelle —
have made a lot of sacrifices on behalf of my cockamamie ideas, the
running for office and things,” Obama joked in an interview with ABC’s Barbara Walters that will air Friday on a special edition of “20/20.”
By the time the president’s second term is over, Malia will be in
college, while Sasha will be a sophomore in high school. Both girls
attend Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., where Chelsea Clintonalso attended while her father was president.

“So we’ve gotta — you know we gotta make sure that she’s doin’ well …until she goes off to college,” the president said. “Sasha will have a big say in where we are,” the president said.

ABC News reports that if Obama were to stay and maintains a residence in D.C. after his term, he would be the first ex-president to do so since Woodrow Wilson. :>)

    • crazycanuck

“Daddy, let’s get the he!! out of dodge” lmao.

    • Town

Cue up all the racists saying Obama needs to go because he’s overshadowing Hillary or whatever white president* is in office.

Also watch for attacks on Sasha Obama.

*I personally don’t think Democrats will let another serious nominee of color get anywhere near the nomination ever again. Look how the old school Democrats are slyly trying to get back in the graces of white people, even though Obama’s proven TWICE the presidency can be won without the majority of the white vote.

      • conlakappa

All true. No problem with Clinton buying a house in DC right in the embassy area because back then, former presidents weren’t constantly being asked about their successors.

        • jds09

If they stay in DC and STILL won’t attend the parties, heads will still explode, LOL

          • conlakappa

You mean when! Oh, yes, the snippiness well continue, “Sasha is in high school now so why won’t you come to our salons and soirées?!”

      • jds09

You know Town, I’m wrestling with this idea too. Part of me says naw, we won’t see another serious nominee of color then another part of me says maybe, b/c what POTUS has shown us is that the whites in the democratic party aren’t in charge anymore, they’re appropriately part of a coalition.

        • jziglar

I don’t think president Obama will be the last POC to win the White house. The old schooldems won’t be around much longer and if a guy like Terry Mac ran with the Obama play book then we know that many dems understand this.

          • gn

This is why I think that the beltway media and GOP are on overdrive to try to troll PBO as much as possible—to discourage other of color people from wanting to take on this type of headache. I think of people like Gov. Patrick, Kamala Harris (hey Axel, you can pick your tongue off the floor lol), Castro brothers, and all manner of talent rising through local politics. I’m with you: PBO is the groundbreaker but hopefully he won’t be the last; feeling more optimistic about that.

      • jziglar

Another reason why more people of color will run for office is because President broke the barrier just like Jackie Robinson. Also, the democratic party voters are more diverse than before and the demographic changes in this country will lead to more diversity in the WH. I say watch out for

        • TyrenM

Castros and Gov. Patrick…are young. [I see you GN below :}]

    • gn

They can always move to NY—Sasha can attend Brooklyn Friends! I can’t imagine how much the city would go crazy for them; they wouldn’t get a moment’s peace lol.

    ALEXANDER2♥/POU FAM♥ — – –IT’s ON @ WAL-MART –

    – — NC labor activists protest low wages at Wal-Mart– -

    — – - -North Carolina labor activists say they’re protesting the social cost of Wal-Mart’s low prices.

Protests aimed at getting the retailing giant to pay more are planned Friday at Wal-Mart stores in Raleigh and nearby Clayton as holiday shoppers crowd in looking for bargains. Activists say most Wal-Mart workers earn less than $25,000 a year.

The National Labor Relations Board said this week a preliminary investigation backed complaints that the retailer unlawfully threatened California and Texas employees if they engaged in strikes and protests ahead of Black Friday last year.

The NLRB believes Wal-Mart also illegally threatened, disciplined or terminated more than 100 employees in 13 states for participating in protests over wages and working conditions.

Good Morning POU. Off to help a friend move. Why anybody would move in Winter in this state is beyond me…but here we go. I’ll check back later for all the “news” lol.

  • gn

I’ve been bitching about the President apologizing for GlitchGate and the insurance policy cancellations; last night one of my brothers offered a really great perspective that changed my mind about it. IIRC at least one other commenter here said the same thing, but the way that my brother put it struck home: he said first of all, this is PBO’s second term. He thinks PBO is in full “kiss my black ass” mode, point blank period, and doesn’t care about polls, politics, optics, etc. My brother then said that if he were a policy bigshot/bigwig and he found out that somewhere a little guy was being hurt by one of his policies, regardless of why, he’d apologize too: “my bad, we didn’t see that coming, we’re working to fix it.” Per my brother, that apology is not for political junkies; it’s a polite, gentlemanly, classy thing to do once you learn that something that you put in place may have negatively affected a few people who are just scraping by. Honestly I couldn’t argue with that, at all. Was a great dinner, hopefully everyone is enjoying the holiday too!

    • conlakappa

Someone here? Dag, play-cousins aren’t what they used to be!

      • gn

lol!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, ***conlakappa*** made that point a few weeks ago. Happy now? /pops, locks, and rolls to avoid the goodie brush in mid-flight

        • conlakappa

Whatever, gn, whatever! I didn’t throw a brush or even a shoe. Just sobbed gently. Love, someone here…
Hope your holiday was a good one. We grubbed well. Sweet potato soufflé was a hit.

          • gn

Hahaha, lol, you are so silly. Thanksgiving dinner was fantastic—I actually ended up making the butter but I think I was the one most excited about it.

          • conlakappa

I have made butter accidentally by overwhipping cream. I wouldn’t put salt in it, by the way. I only use unsalted butter any way plus I wonder if it alters the chemistry. I was going to suggest to folks that they mix their own brown sugar if they aren’t already. That way you have the amount you need and the color you need. It is just white sugar and molasses.

          • gn

I did put salt in it (not a lot though). It was super-easy—basically just running heavy cream in a blender for about 50 minutes. I’m doing this for every holiday from now on. I was so proud of that butter last night lol! Great idea about the brown sugar too. Terrorist fist bumps for that; good looking out.

          • conlakappa

I know you put salt in it–I read your post. I used my glass bowl in the stand mixer for the first time. It was pretty cool getting to see if it was mixing through. Um, I might have multiple bowls and whips for my blender. What? Online shopping and cooking/baking instruments: combining two passions!

          • gn

Hey, speaking of baking: my family is looking for a recipe for these cake-like drop cookies which have raisins and walnuts in them. My maternal grandmother used to make them but we have no idea where she got the recipe—would cake-y drop cookies with nuts and raisins ring a bell to you? They’re nothing like the buttery base for chocolate chip/oatmeal raisin etc. cookies—and again, they’re cake-like, not shortbread-ish…

          • conlakappa

Rings no bells. Check on Epicurious if there are still chat groups.

    • nathkatun7

GN, you have a very, very, wise brother! Honest people are never afraid to admit mistakes. I think President Obama is one of the most honest political leaders in my lifetime.
I hope you and your family had a fabulous Thanksgiving. Always enjoy reading your commentaries.

    - – - -Easier road seen for Obama regs- -

    - – - –The Obama Administration’s second-term regulatory agenda should be an easier lift, thanks to changes to the Senate’s filibuster rules that make it easier to fill key agency positions and install federal judges.
The Senate’s move this month to lower the threshold to reach final
confirmation votes strengthens President Obama’s hand when it comes to imposing regulations in support of his policy agenda.

    — -[Uhhh. . .MR. PRESIDENT --HELPED.]
Instead of a 60-vote threshold that required support from at least five Republicans, the president can now afford to lose a handful of Democrats and still win Senate confirmation for his nominees with a simple majority vote. — -

    – - – -Consumer advocates and watchdog groups heralded the action, pointing to 189 executive nominees and 53 judicial nominees now awaiting confirmation.

Vacancies now “should be easier to fill with people who meet the basic criteria of having a commitment to fulfilling the law,” said Lisa Donner, executive director of Americans for Financial Reform.

OK, first some background – my Mother taught 1st grade for 30 years…I come from a family of teachers – old school teachers – teachers that believe in decorating and having their rooms in full mode for every holiday from Presidents Day to Xmas. Suffice to say when she retired and we had to clean out her room, it was as if we were told to go clean out Disney World. So do you know how I spend the day after Thanksgiving? I must gather up ALL of her Thanksgiving/Harvest motiff – everything from the bathrooms, rugs, garland, what must be a thousand little pilgrims and pumpkins, centerpieces…you name it, if the Dollar Tree/Dollar General/Michael’s/Family Dollar sold it….I’m putting that shit in these big plastic containers marked “Thanksgiving-Fall” right now. My sister is taking out the Xmas-Winter boxes in the outside storage room – I think she just screamed but I’m too tired to go see what is attacking her in there. My brother is outside taking down the yard displays…that is with an “s”…plural….DISPLAYS. There has never been a Xmas Angel my Mama didn’t like. Nor Santa, nor Snowman. There is stuff to go on every doorknob and hang from every door – inside and out. And because we have been determined to get my Mother to sit DOWN….we’re gonna put this stuff up if it kills us. Mind you, when we come back on Xmas eve, we will find a whole bunch of stuff we didn’t put up because it wasn’t there. That will be the stuff that she bought during the course of the next 3 weeks just because it was “on sale.”…and a sure guarantee for me to hear the words “I can find a place for it!”Now…this is a disease, it has to be…all my aunts have it too. My cousins and I have been fighting it, but slowly find ourselves buying knick-knacks, what-me-nots, and (my personal favorite), something-to-go-heres. Just STUFF…a house full of STUFF.Happy Holidays

    • conlakappa

Ah, stuff. So hard to resist. Impossible to store well. My family members have décor from all seasons and will tell you the best time to buy stuff. Only one cousin seems to have that particular strain of the disease. I went through a phase of buying copper cookie cutters and will admit to have them for all seasons. My aunt separated them by seasons… I haven’t bought one in 10 years but they are classics. To the Frasier fans: I have the cutter from the ginger bread muscle man that Gil couldn’t resist! it was made custom for the show then part of the store’s collection. Good folks in Nebraska whom I tried to get to market to stores in gay neighborhoods.

Nope, this 20something was excited that among her group of friends who put in for a place at the lighting of the National Christmas tree, she was the only one who won.
