Jay-Z’s Lie By Omission

Who knew camels were so sneaky!

On Oct 26th, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter released a statement in response to calls for him to cut ties with Barneys, due to allegations of racial profiling against the luxury department store. Here’s part of what he said:

This collaboration lives in a place of giving and is about the Foundation. I am not making a dime from this collection; I do not stand to make millions, as falsely reported. I need to make that fact crystal clear. The Shawn Carter Foundation is the beneficiary and the foundation is receiving 25% of all sales from the collaboration, 10% of all sales generated in the store on November 20th and an additional donation from Barneys. This money is going to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships to help further their education at institutions of higher learning. My idea was born out of creativity and charity… not profit.

Well, that settles it then! Nothing to see here. His collaboration is all about educating the kids, not making a profit for himself, right?

Uh…not so fast. You see, Jay left out one lil’ piece of information about his relationship with Barneys….his new fragrance line that will be available there and in Macy’s, which is also facing charges of racial discrimination. WWD reports:

The scent, which he has dubbed Gold Jay Z, will make its debut at Barneys New York on Nov. 20 as part of his exercise in fashion collaboration with the store. That will be followed on Nov. 29, Black Friday, with the rollout of the distribution to 2,000 department stores, led by Macy’s, Sephora, Nordstrom, Dillard’s, Belk, Bon-Ton and Ulta.

But here’s the thing: His new fragrance is NOT a part of the “A New York Holiday” menswear collection that will benefit Jay’s foundation, so the profits from the $55 million in projected sales will go to Barneys, Macy’s, the others stores and Jay Z.

Jay LIED, y’all. He released that bs statement and used his foundation as cover to take the heat off himself. He knew damn well that he had no intentions of severing ties with Barneys, and this announcement of the roll out of his fragrance proves it.

I bet Harry Belafonte is somewhere doing the “Told Ya So” dance.

I knew something was up. Jay Z fiends for green like a crackhead for rocks, so ain’t no way he was doing anything for Barney’s and wasn’t getting paid. His day is coming, though.

  • rikyrah

    no shock in the least.

    none at all.

Can’t even feign surprise at this….we all knew the “charity” was being used. If JayZ really wanted to raise money for his “charity”, he wouldn’t be partnering with a high end Dept Store that’s only located in a few cities…he would be serious about it and partner with an entity with a far greater reach to the masses of people – but alas, that’s really beside the point. Because that would be IF he was really serious about giving back in the first place. He’s not…its a ruse. Its just a cover. Just like that phony ass statement he put out.

    • Alma98

He could have partnered with Target, Sears or some well known chain that’s in all 50 states. His charity would probably get a lot of money that way.

      • Miranda

When the story first came out about him partnering with Barney’s I wondered “why?”…it didn’t make sense…not in terms of strategic fundraising it didn’t. But now we see that fundraising really wasn’t the goal at all.

        • Alma98

I wonder what lie he’s gonna come up with now.

        • Jay is a social climber and Barneys represents the high society that he desperately wants entrance to.

          • Miranda

Somebody needs to tell him he can make a trillion dollars and his name still won’t go in the Social Register, he still won’t get invited to the Bilderberg Conference and there will be no lowering of the flags upon his demise.

      • EpiphanySweet

Jay Z is new money. He aint got time for them low budget stores. He is gone just like Kanway. (spelled wrong on purpose because he is so wrong in all ways) I put him on ignore a long time ago.

  • crazycanuck

I want wine, I wish I could order a bottle to my door

    • Alma98

      wino LOL.

      • crazycanuck

        no I’m a wineaux

        • Alma98

          HAHAHAHAHAHA! Touche!

  • Alma98

I don’t begrudge people for making money just don’t use a charity to do it and then lie about. smh

    • Exactly. He made it seem like the menswear capsule collection was the ONLY project he was doing with Barneys, and then here he come with this new fragrance which is gonna get a HUGE rollout with Barneys AND Macy’s.

  • Alma98

John Cole really is a Greenwald, Snowden fanboy, smh.

    • AxelFoley

Ain’t he? That punk bitch. I told him and that asswipe Corner Stone they’re fucking idiots.

      • Alma98

I saw you over there tearing there asses up.
Then as soon as people start telling him he’s wrong he puts up another thread. I swear you’d think he was dating GG. He needs to just go ahead and admit he’s a libertarian already. And they still believe Manning was tortured, they are clueless.

    • Admiral_Komack

Hmmm, should I go to Balloon Juice?
Do I really want to deal with silly-ass bullshit today?

      • Alma98

No you don’t wanna go lol.

        • Admiral_Komack

After the bullshit with ABL over there, I’m like “Fuck them.”

    Trouble with Truth

  • Robin Givhan has a very interesting take on Jay-Z and the allegations against Barneys and Macy’s:

What can Jay Z do about alleged racial profiling at Barneys?

    • Miranda

Interesting indeed. It does seem as if Macy’s is getting cut some slack in the outrage department and even more disturbing is how the “outrage” with Barney’s has turned from the treatment of the customers, to the customers themselves. Now more of US are back to “but why they wanna by that high price belt anyway…what she doing buying that purse! she can’t afford that!”…………When you think about it, this really does show how disjointed we are as a people. Did the NAACP even make a statement? They made more noise over big gulps at the corner stores being banned.

But back to why Barney’s is getting worse publicity than Macy’s – Barney’s has 40 stores total including the outlets and overseas. Macy’s has 150 stores and 167,000 employees…and I dont know about other cities with “black malls”, but Macy’s is in most of the “black malls” in Atlanta – are they getting slack because they’re not so exclusive as far as merchandise and locations? Things that make ya go hmmmmmmmm.

    • jds09

This may be the best article I’ve read from Givhan. I admit, I did want Jay Z to show some leadership and make Barney’s uncool, a la his lyrics about the champagne Kristol. But instead of his money/success freeing him, looks like he has gotten caught in chasing more dollars.

  • jds09

Twitter experts, when someone regularly retweets positive/nice/glowing things people say about them, is that effective? It gets on my nerves.

  • Admiral_Komack

    -And it begins:

“Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, used a speech to Iowa Democrats on Saturday night to endorse Hillary Rodham Clinton for president, another indication of how quickly the party is coalescing behind the former secretary of state.

Speaking in the state that helped lift President Obama’s campaign and dashed Mrs. Clinton’s hopes in the 2008 caucuses, Mr. Schumer said the time was right that year for Mr. Obama.

“2016 is Hillary’s time,” Mr. Schumer declared at the Iowa Democratic Party’s Jefferson Jackson Dinner. “And our nation will be all the better for it.”
    -New York Times, 11/2/2013

    • Admiral_Komack

Gee, someone feels that Hillary is entitled.

    • Miranda

The Dems are doing nothing but helping Christie.

    • AxelFoley

Let ’em. They’re on their own with this. They’ll get no support from me. I’ll show up to vote if she’s the nominee (she’s still better than any Republican), but that’s all.

I will troll the shit outta her supporters, though.
