  • PBO’s camp calls out Romney on his racist comment about Palestinians:

Obama campaign officials criticized Mr. Romney’s latest remarks, describing them as the sort of thing that could make it more difficult for Mr. Romney to ever play a credible role in the Middle East peace process, which depends on having buy-in not from just Israelis but from Palestinian officials as well.

American credibility and influence in that arena depend on “us being seen as an honest broker,” said Colin Kahl, an Obama campaign foreign policy adviser who served as the top Middle East policy official in the Pentagon from 2009 to 2011. “But in this case, Romney fell off the tightrope pretty dramatically.”

“It was a really strange comment,” Mr. Kahl added, noting that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict encompasses “extraordinarily complicated and delicate issues and is not something you can just wing it on and expect not to make some mistakes, and Governor Romney made a big one.”

    • Miranda

Undoubtedly, Mitt will offend the citizens of Poland and complete his doofus tour.

Polish Solidarity distances itself from Romney visit

(Reuters) – Solidarity, the trade union movement which led the Polish struggle against communist rule, distanced itself on Monday from a visit to Poland by U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney, saying he supported attacks on unions in his own country.

Romney was in Poland on the third and final leg of a tour aimed at burnishing his foreign policy credentials and demonstrating that he would be a viable alternative to President Barack Obama on the world stage.

    – —Fox’s Greta Van Susteren: Covering Mitt Romney’s trip feels like “the press is a modified petting zoo”– —

    — —After a temporary press blackout (since reversed) or two, and embarrassing himself repeatedly, including his terrible, horrible, no good, very bad London gaffe-athon, and especially after accusations of racism, one would think Willard Romney would want to stay on the press’s good side.

    Apparently he’ll do that retroactively.

    – –THIS—->Gee, I don’t recall President Obama going through this kind of humiliation and evasiveness.- -HAH!*** In fact, via Think Progress:

    – – – -☻Journalists following the Romney campaign on the road have voiced some gripes with how they are being treated. They have been asked to submit quotes for approval, barred from asking questions on the rope line, and were temporarily barred from entering a fundraiser to which they’d been promised entry (after media outrage, the campaign reversed its decision).

    – –☻–There has been no press access to Governor Romney since we landed in Poland. We (press) are in a holding pattern (I can’t help but feel a bit like the press is a modified petting zoo since we are trapped in a bus while Polish citizens take pictures of us.) Under the headline “Governor Romney won’t like this” we saw a big sign in the crowd for Rep Ron Paul.

    – – –Romney Doubles Down: Economically Successful Countries Are Culturally Superior– —

    – — –In a speech to wealthy donors in Tel Aviv over the weekend, Romney praised Israel’s “economic vitality” compared to the poor Palestinian economy. He attributed the economic success of the nation to a strong culture:

I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things. …
    – – — SNIP- —

    – – –. . . In response, the Romney campaign claimed the statement was “grossly mischaracterized” and chided the press for omitting the candidate’s full remarks. To contextualize Romney’s comparison — which actually underestimated the disparity between Israel’s GDP of US$31,000 to the West Bank and Gaza’s US$1,500 — the campaign offered his next line as proof that he did not target Palestinians: “And that is also between other countries that are near or next to each other. Chile and Ecuador, Mexico and the United States.”- —-[***HEAD HITS KEYBOARD***]

    – — –This defense underscores the fundamental tone-deafness of the comparison. To give the full context, Romney discussed two economic theories, one attributing success to the physical characteristics of the land, while another attributes it to culture. He argued that the successes of Israel, the U.S. and Chile can be attributed to strong cultures; conversely, the geographically similar Palestinian, Ecuadorean and Mexican economies are the result of a poorer culture.—–[***shakin’ my head***]

    – —Democratic Party Approves Marriage Equality Platform Plank

    – – —Yesterday, the Democratic Party platform drafting committee unanimously approved language endorsing same-sex marriage as a plank in the platform. According to a DNC staffer, the plank supports marriage equality as well as the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. It also includes support for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The decision reflects not only the support of President Obama, but of prominent Democratic leaders across the country who have spoken out on behalf of the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.– —

SMH……..*facepalm*……oh dear….Jonathan Chait has figured out that PBO is speaking in the scary “black dialect!”!

Dave Weigel tries to set Chait straight and promptly fumbles the ball his damn self

Bob Cesca asks the question that I need to know the answer to as well, what the hell is “black dialect”? Sounding like Cliff Huxtable or sounding like Chicken George?

    • Ebogan63

Chait, seriously?? You thought this shite up for an article? The people that this will work on were not gonna vote for him anyway ,so this piece of concern-trolling is so much fail.

Jon, y’all need to step up yo game, son.

    • nellcote

So if PBO speaks emphatically then that’s an angry black man thing? Sheesh, they really don’t want him to campaign at all do they.

    • nellcote

Chait is looking for links from Drudge. I’m sure he’ll get them.

    • Chait and Weigel prove what we’ve been saying all along — that white liberals can be as racially ignorant/racist as white conservatives.

      • conlakappa

When all you “know” about black people is comprised of a frothy brew of watching The Wire, Oz, and looking up stuff on Urban Dictionary, you will face serious challenges relating. But no doubt they consider their negrology cards stamped and valid. And they are not unfamiliar with the term “don’t leave a brother hanging!” Problem is, that was probably learned hearing Tina Fey saying it on 30 Rock.

    • rikyrah

      “Black dialect?”

      • Aquagranny911

I loved that video! I’ve watched it over & over. Everyone wanted a hug from “Mom-in-Chief” It was so touching to see those athletes trying to wipe off the sweat before they gave ‘Mom’ a hug.

I saw a clip of that on my local Univision & one of the commentators called Michelle “Mamita” (Little Mama) That is a really endearing term reserved for those who are well loved.

      • JojoRaze

I noticed that too. They lined up nicely and waited their turn. I saw FLOTUS made sure she hugged Derrick Rose–Chicago Bull–and the Kentucky rookie guy from Chi-town real hard. Kobe just lit up when he saw Michelle, though.

Also David Beckham is a full FLOTUS stan. He obviously has a crush, he just lights up around her.

          • isonprize

Yeah, he did. And FLOTUS introduced him to the guy sitting next to her. I’m not sure who it was, but Coach K was all up in there.

Coach K might be a Re-thug, but at least he’s a Re-thug with some home training.

Besides, they make such a big deal about how the team needed to “know how to act” on and off the court. Coach K knew he BETTER recognize!!

    — –THIS —is “WHYCOME”- – – —

    – — – —SNIP- – –

    – – – – –Walesa’s remarks follow a series of tiffs with Obama. Walesa skipped a meeting of national leaders with Obama organized by Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski during the president’s trip to Poland in May 2011.

“I won’t meet him,” Walesa told reporters at the time. “It doesn’t suit me.”

One year later, the White House refused to allow Walesa to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously honored to Jan Karski, a member of the Polish underground during World War II, deeming Walesa “too political.” While awarding the medal, Obama compounded Polish anger by referring to a “Polish death camp” instead of a Nazi death camp in Poland.

    – — -NOW: The REAL STORY:- – – –

The current leadership of the Solidarity movement, which is allied with U.S. unions and Democrats, quickly distanced itself from Walesa’s remarks.

“In relation to Lech Walesa’s meeting with Mitt Romney … I wish to inform that NSZZ ‘Solidarnosc’ is in no way involved in the organization of this meeting nor had the initiative to invite Mitt Romney to Poland,” Andrzej Adamczyk, the head of the union’s international department, said in a statement.

“Regretfully, we have learned from our friends in the American trade union central AFL-CIO representing over 12 million workers about Mitt Romney’s support for the attacks against trade unions and labor rights.

    • conlakappa

He’s Catholic and anti-choice. Those are where the problems with the President lie. Or at least originate. He can be grown and just say that.

  • Miranda

Jesse Washington of the AP….is an idiot.

Race Relations and Obama: The Story Behind the Story

But now this man was completely unhappy with Obama. He thought he had “deepened racial divisions” through policies like “Obamacare” and other things that act as a “tax on working people and are a huge benefit to those who don’t deign to work, who reside on welfare for years.”

And these people who don’t deign to work are disproportionately black?

“Yes. More of an inner-city type of individual,” he said.

At this point, let me say that I do not believe this man is a racist. We spoke for about 30 minutes. I don’t think he believes white people are better than black people, or that black people are lazy, violent, and so forth. And it seems very unlikely that he could be a racist and vote for Obama in 2008. I can’t be certain, of course. But this was my impression from the overall tone and nuance of the statements he made.

    • Kennymack1971

Jesse’s concern trolling ass can have a seat.

    • Ebogan63

That mofo he interviewed is a fucking lie. He voted for the old boat anchor and Miss Sarah, so Jessie needs to stop with these stupid articles of his.

      • Aquagranny911

IMO & in my world he can take a seat on nails. I know Anglos who voted for PBO in 2008 and will do the same on November 6.

      • OK! Did it ever occur to Jesse that the guy just said that he voted for PBO and checked his tone because he (Jesse) is Black?? What he should’ve done is sent a WHITE reporter to interview white people. I bet he would’ve seen a whole ‘nother side to dude.

    • Saying a white person isn’t racist just because he/she voted for PBO is the same as a white person, “I’m not racist. Some of my best friends are Black”, and we all know that’s bs.

Jesse Washington is nothing but an apologist for racism.

BTW, did ya’ll peep the part where he says he’s writing a profile of FLOTUS?

      • Miranda

    • creolechild

Suggestion for Jesse Washington: Remove head from sphincter, engage in research, interview someone other than a person who openly displays racial animus, think, then write!

When it comes to welfare, perceptions have often trumped reality. Among the facts:

•Though blacks are disproportionately represented among food stamp recipients, far more whites receive such assistance. When recipients identified themselves by race in 2010, 34 percent were white, 22 percent were black and 16 were percent Hispanic, the Agriculture Department said.

•Food-stamp spending has indeed increased under Obama, but its steady climb began under President George W. Bush.

•Blacks form a slight plurality in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, a system that offers cash assistance and is much smaller than the food stamp program. Of families receiving TANF help in 2009, 33 percent were African-American, 31 percent were white and 29 percent were Hispanic.

•Since passage of the 1996 Welfare Reform Act, those seeking cash assistance have faced strict work requirements and a five-year lifetime limit.

Them tearing Mittens a new one notwithstanding, I was totally impressed by recent journalistic action in England, people actually doing what they were supposed to do. A huckster claimed that he had a bomb detection device that would smell IEDs, he sold a whole lot of them in the the hot spots. Problem was, they clearly didn’t do what he said they did. The BBC investigated and had a scientist analyze a few. He pointed out they were duds, the Beeb handed over their findings to Scotland Yard and the guy was arrested. Can you imagine had some reporter here found that out? Oh, wait, they wouldn’t have looked. Just repeated whatever was in the guy’s company’s prospectus. And Johnny Orange an’em would have given him a congressional medal + all of the military contracts.

    ALEXANDER2—–Pursuin” – – -“BLACK OLYMPIANS WATCH”- -:>)—

    — –Dominique Dawes wants new nickname for gymnast Gabby Douglas – – —

——Former Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes captured worldwide attention as a member of the ’96 Atlanta Games’ ’Magnificent Seven.’ The group of gymnasts captured a gold medal in the team event, which the U.S. women’s team hasn’t done since. Dawes recently spoke with Minneapolis Star Tribune columnist C.J. about her Olympic past and her dislike for Gabby Douglas’ nickname on the current women’s gymnastics team:

Q Is this being a black person in an elite sport that’s mostly white an over-asked question?

A I don’t think it’s ever overdone. The sport of gymnastics is still primarily a white sport though if you look at these young girls preparing for the London Olympic Games, we have a young African-American gymnast in Gabby Douglas, who’s leading the way. She won the Olympic trials. She’s someone that when you watch her do gymnastics you have to jump out of your seat. You have to applaud. I’m doing work now for I was at the Olympic trials, I’m in the media section and, you know, you’re not supposed to show a bias or favoritism at all and I was jumping out of my seat watching this young, little girl.- —
    – – – – -SNIP- – –

    — Q Do you call Gabby “The Flying Squirrel”?
A I do not, and I do not like that nickname. I will be honest with you, I do not like that nickname. I’m going to call her “Doin’ It Douglas,” “Wowing It Douglas.” I am trying my hardest to come up with a nickname that’s going to stick. – – –SNIP- — It’s a nickname but I think there are others that better describe her talent. Why don’t we collaborate? We’ll tweet about it.

Love the video… but I can’t help but wonder if PBO, who has let folks know in the past that he don’t play when it comes to FLOTUS, looked at those young dudes and thought:

If you are a welfare recipient, that’s just a little more than three checks.”

“Maybe we shouldn’t remind people,” he added after thinking about it. “We shouldn’t remind people on welfare when the election is. That may not be something we want to actually do.”

ROFLMAO – so when you hear that Romney got “big crowds” today in Poland…just bear in mind the big arts festival going on at the same time. LOL
Romney in Gdansk: Big crowds, but support for Ron Paul, Obama

Mitt Romney got a welcome sight, and a not so welcome sight, as he entered Gdansk, the Poland city where the Solidarity movement helped lead the nation to freedom from Soviet domiation.

According to media pool reports, he found big crowds–though some were apparently there for an arts festival.

But he also was greeted by a huge banner saying, “Polish Choice-R.Paul,” a reference to his Republican presidential primary rival Ron Paul. And some in the crowd were chanting “O-bam-a”

    – — –Predatory For-Profit Colleges Pay Executives Based On Corporate Profitability, Not Student Outcomes—-

    – – –According to preliminary findings of an investigation by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, many for-profit colleges pay their executives based almost exclusively on corporate profitability, without taking into account student outcomes. Cummings’ office received documents from 13 for-profit schools, which showed just where the schools place their proirities:

The documents obtained during the course of this investigation indicate that the single most significant measure for determining executive compensation at these schools is corporate profitability, including factors such as operating income, earnings, profits, operating margins, earnings per share, net cash flow, and revenue. Companies use various combinations of these factors to determine the majority of executive compensation.

As discussed below, some >companies provided no documents demonstrating links to student achievement when determining executive compensation, other companies provided documents with vague references to student achievement, and other companies provided documents that included specific compensation percentages linked to student performance measures. In all cases, however, the majority of compensation paid to company executives is based on measures relating to corporate profitability rather than student achievement.

    Real Obama vs. Fantasy Obama
    —By Kevin Drum

    | Mon Jul. 30, 2012 10:26 AM PDT

I’ve long had my issues with Drew Westen, and they’re on striking display in an op-ed he wrote a few days ago for the Washington Post. He says Barack Obama made “three crucial errors” after he took office:

This kind of thing is intensely frustrating. I actually agree with Westen’s broad point that Obama should have been more aggressive than he was. And yet, these three “errors” are so ahistorical that they make me crazy. First: Obama had to invite Republicans to the table. When he took office Democrats didn’t have a filibuster-proof majority. Second: Obama couldn’t get a bigger stimulus. The evidence on this score is voluminous. Whether he wanted a bigger stimulus is an open question, but it’s also moot. He just didn’t have the votes. Third: universal healthcare wasn’t an especially popular idea and the American public was far from adamant that they wanted it. Oh, it polls decently in the abstract, getting roughtly 60% support over the past decade, but that’s nothing special. It’s the worst kind of poll literalism to think this represents a genuine, intensely-held groundswell of support for national healtchare. In reality, it’s a tenuous majority.

I really don’t understand why people like Westen can’t make their critiques of Obama’s leadership in a way that takes into account obvious political realities. Not that it would be easy. If you look at past presidents who made big changes, they were mostly surfing on waves that were already cresting: FDR and the New Deal, LBJ and civil rights, Reagan and taxes. Obama just didn’t have that.

Good, but I need to unpack a few things: First off, this need of these white liberals with this constant drone about PBO being ‘more aggressive’ belies the fact that if he did that, charges of being the angry black man would’ve been prevalent, and I cannot stand this entitlement that white liberals feel in their idiotic requirement that PBO be fucking Shaft and get nothing, then where would we be? Second, the charge that PBO was a ‘poor leader of the Party’ ignores the fact that he’s not David Cameron, and we don’t have a parliamentary system of gov’t -when he suggested that the Dems back a middle class tax cut and let the Bush cuts expire in ’10, they didn’t listen to him, how does that make him a ‘poor leader of the Party? Lastly, pushing for more stimulus in ’09’, when the orig. only passed with one vote, and in ’10 on the heels of the ACA fight is just plain idiotic misreading of the political landscape that he rightly accuses Westen of engaging. Drum can on occasion come up with good stuff like this, but I have found it few and far between the typical PL garbage he and others spout with too much frequency.

      • JojoRaze

I don’t know who wrote the article in 2011 asking the PL if Hillary would have been more liberal and everyone basically saying “No she would have been as, or more conservative as PBO since she was pummelled by the Repubs in the 90s.” It straight shut them up.

I’m reading the Ancestry(dot)com report on PBO’s black ancestry through his mother and it’s very interesting. It’s very well referenced and supported even though they aren’t 100% sure. It seems that there is some sort of Melungeon connection as the Bunch/Punch family also married into Melungeons.

The connection is through his mother’s maternal grandmother, Leona McCurry, who always was ashamed of her supposed Cherokee ancestry.

Froomkin to media: Tell people the truth about voter ID laws

Dan Froomkin really lets the media establishment have it for not pointing out the nefarious agenda behind voter ID laws. I live in a city where the two local papers have been aggressively covering the issue, but I’m not seeing it on the national news. Gee, I wonder if it has anything to do with protecting their own corporate interests?

This is not simply another gratuitously partisan act by the GOP. This is an attack on the very notion of democracy. The voter ID push, along with intimidation of voter registration groups and purges of voter rolls have only one goal: blocking legitimate but probably Democratic voters from exercising their constitutional rights. It is a poll tax with a new twist. And the pursuit of this goal ostensibly in the name of voter fraud is an outrageous deception that only works if the press is too timid to call it what it really is.

Well, Bubba, looks like you’re going to have to bring your “A” game because you’ll be sharing the attention that you so desperately crave with Elizabeth. She’ll be a hard act to follow so try not to get upstaged. But if you do, don’t sulk; it’s unattractive.~

Elizabeth Warren To Speak Before Bill Clinton At Dem Convention

Elizabeth Warren will have a prime speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention, the Boston Globe reports. The former White House financial reform adviser and now Massachusetts Senate candidate will speak immediately before former President Bill Clinton, on the second-to-last night of the event.

Call me Polyanna (I’ve been rightfully accused of unwarranted optimism many times), but I think that it’s all going to work out just fine. I love that candidates like Elizabeth Warren are refusing to flee from this excellent POTUS and are instead linking arms and running with him. That’s wise.

      • creolechild

GN, I hope that the convention is successful too. I was having a bit of fun at Bubba’ s expense because he works on my last nerve with his subtle undermining of PBO every chance he gets.~

So… I finally took the dive and looked up the “Mormon Magic Underwear” Honestly, I thought that it *had* to be some kind of joke.

Okay, so I always knew they hated black people, believed in polygamy, didn’t drink coffee or liquor, and don’t even get me started with the baptism of dead people, especially Jews, into Mormonism.

But the underwear? You gotta be kidding me. This Joseph Smith guy has got to be on the Top Ten List for “Pimps in the Pulpit”

—- —Nevada GOP on short end of registration battle– – –

    – – –When Nevada’s voter registration rolls were scrubbed earlier this year to reflect people who had moved, Republicans saw hope. Nevada Democrats’ advantage, which peaked four years ago at nearly 100,000 voters, dropped in April to just over a third of that total — 36,700 voters.

Was this a sign that Nevada is a much different state than it was in 2008, when President Barack Obama easily put it in his column?

The Democratic organization has begun making up the difference. Even if Democrats haven’t reached their peak from four years ago, they are registering voters at a much faster clip than Republicans.Yaaaaa!

New numbers released this week show Democrats have increased their advantage over Republicans to 47,500 voters.

Since April, Democratic voter registration has increased by 20,500. Republican registration in that time has increased by 9,700.

For another point of comparison that reflects poorly for Republicans, consider that nonpartisan voters — those who pick no party to affiliate with — increased by 11,000. And no one is actively seeking to register them.

I ran across this website from Myth’s second cousin, Park Romney. They share a great-grandfather, who had 30 kids (no mention of how many wives). So when he says that they’ve never met, that’s believable to me. But with book he has written, and what he’s saying about Mormons, they probably never will.

Park Romney, resembles Myth, and like Myth, held a high office in the church. He’s an ‘apostate’ Mormon now and says, according to WaPo 2/2/12, Dana Milbank, that Mormonism “is an insidious contemporary fraud…. an American cult.”

Now if this was Barack Obama’s cousin, we would be hearing about this ALL DAY LONG, 24/7!!!

It’s a 60-person, $40,000-a-head dinner — making his haul for the night about $2.4 million. He’s set to spend a longer-than-usual four-plus hours at the hotel, but the campaign hasn’t said why he’s spending so much time at the event.

Not all the donors on hand gave huge contributions. One, Trevor Smith, won a campaign contest for a photo op with the president. He’s a native of West Hartford, Conn., and lives in Astoria, Queens. He’s the manager of the visitor’s center and events at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.
