Happy Belated birthday Alma and conlakappa! I partied this weekend with my auntie and cousin who celebrated theirs as well!!!

    • Alma98

Thank you Monie I hoped you partied hard! LOL

      • MonieTalks

I did! January is a very popular month for birthdays in my circle of friends and family. I hope you had a great time as well.

        • Alma98

Yes I did thank you. We have a lot of January birthdays too.

    • conlakappa

Thanks, Monie! I haven’t been feeling so great so it was kind of chill. I had returned from warmer climes, which is a lot more fun than being sick at home!

Sounds like you and your family had fun. Good on all of you!

Saw in the last thread about Aaron Swartz. NY daily News has an interesting article up about a previous action by Swartz…

Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz had considered suicide before

The Internet wunderkind who hanged himself in his Brooklyn apartment and spurred a bout of soul searching at MIT made a tragic online cry for help in 2007.

Aaron Swartz, one of the founders of the popular and influential website Reddit, wrote a blog post imagining his own death shortly after being fired by Conde Nast, which had bought the startup.

“There is a moment, immediately before life becomes no longer worth living, when the world appears to slow down and all its myriad details suddenly become brightly, achingly apparent,” wrote Swartz in the third-person post titled “A Moment Before Dying.”

“For Aaron, that moment came after exactly one week of pain, seven days of searing, tormenting agony that poured forth from his belly.”

The note so worried Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian he called the police and asked them to break into Swartz’s apartment.

Swartz, 26, would write “people got freaked out and misinterpreted” the story. “I wrote a morose blog post in an attempt to cheer myself up,” he said.

I find Aaron Swartz’s suicide so incredibly sad. So bright and inventive at such a young age, yet super bright, hyper idealistic people need emotional/mental health support so much, too.

      • Alma98

It’s a shame the emos are blaming his death on PBO.

    That’s Re-Run at the 1:10 mark!

And I’m lovin’ the sista’s afro puffs at the 1:58 mark!

    • conlakappa

Maybe because I had such scraggly and aspirational ones when I was a kid [they literally looked like pig tails–no puffing out] that I love seeing afro puffs on little girls now. There is such a strength in those puffs!

      • Alma98

Some of my favorite pics of my daughter is when she has afro puffs.

        • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Man, afro puffs was one of my favorite hairstyles as a kid!

          • Alma98

            YAS!

    • Aquagranny911

Is that what that hair do is called? Cool! My daughter has being doing my granddaughter’s hair that way for a while & she looked so cute at Christmas with ribbons to match her dress.

Granddaughter is 4 so she calls them “ear puffs.”

      • conlakappa

Some of my happiest childhood memories are of going to buy hair ribbons from the fabric store! And then I’d add those purchases to my ribbon bag.

      • Town

        LOL @ ear puffs!!!!

This is getting ugly! See Cory….that’s why you should’ve had a chat with Lautenberg before going public with your intentions to run for his seat.

Frank Lautenberg Aide Slams Booker For “Morning Joe” Interview
Ruby Cramer BuzzFeed Staff | Posted Jan 14, 2013 3:43pm EST

…”Instead of giving Senator Lautenberg credit and showing him the respect that he’s earned, Mayor Booker is stealing his ideas and marketing them as his own,” said the Lautenberg aide.

On Morning Joe, Booker urged Congress to close gun sale loopholes that allow United States citizens to purchase guns without background checks at gun shows. The Mayor also said that people on the country’s “terrorist no-fly list” should be banned from purchasing guns.

“If you were on the terrorist no-fly list, you can’t get on a plane, but you could go to gun shows in America, you can go to the private market, internet sales and buy trunkload full of weapons,” said Booker on the show.

The aide pointed out that both policy initiatives have been championed by Lautenberg for years. In 2007 and in every subsequent Congress, said the aide, the Senator introduced legislation that would ensure terrorists be banned from purchasing firearms and explosives. And a bill to close the gun show loophole was introduced by Lautenberg as early as 1999.

Damn! Cory bout to get a beat down lol.

    • rikyrah

told you that old man isn’t playing with him.

    • edp4bho

Uuummm, don’t know about whether he should’ve checked. Heard over the weekend he’s polling better than the old guy. That aide sounds like it’s all about politics rather than a show of courtesy he’s concerned about.

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

The aide’s comment isn’t the result of that poll. Lautenberg has been calling Booker out ever since he announced he was running, before that poll came out.

And not only has he pissed off Lautenberg, the NJ Dems are pissed too because he waited so long to decide what he wanted to do. They’re worried about the down ticket races and Booker effed up the game by not running against Christie.

        • edp4bho

Makes sense. But, the poll was just a stand alone. I never connected what the aide said with the poll. I just happened to hear it via radio. But really, should Booker have talked to him, like, are they on friendly terms? Seems politics as usual to me. In this hyper-heated climate of racial politics-which we do have- I can’t trust anyone telling any of us we should either wait or consult with the status quo. If not for the double standards they keep throwing at PBO, I wouldn’t be so sensitive. But it’s where I am anymore.

          • edp4bho

“Disclaimer alert”!! I am no big fan of Booker. Needs to grow up a bit, IMHO.

          • qosine

I hope Cory Booker has some solid people with/around him. He’s an only

I hear ya. On the surface I can see why you feel that way. But in this case, I don’t think it’s a situation of them trying to tell us what to do. This is a case of people calling out Booker’s selfishness.

10 States Take Action To Prevent Gun Violence

One month after Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre prompted a national debate about preventing gun violence, state lawmakers have indicated they will push gun violence prevention measures, such as universal background checks, limiting high-capacity ammunition, and banning assault weapons. Right now, the vast majority of states have no laws on many of these issues.

While the country anticipates Vice President Joe Biden’s taskforce recommendations, Congress and many states have already pushed for some practical reforms:

This article is from late December. Isn’t it so damn ironic that having an interest in mixed martial arts makes Trayvon a potential menace to society, but walking around likely every hour of the day with a concealed weapon, calling the police repeatedly over paranoia and suspicions, even with children as young as 8, does not?

Trayvon Martin: Typical teen or troublemaker?

….Zimmerman attorney Mark O’Mara’s portrait of Trayvon is far different from the teen’s family. He points to Trayvon’s recent suspension for the marijuana residue and possible “anecdotal evidence” that the teen was interested in mixed martial arts as red flags of a propensity for violence. One witness to the shooting told police he saw a man in a “black hoodie … throwing down blows on the guy, kind of MMA-style.”

GOP Rep. Threatens Impeachment If Obama Uses Executive Order On Guns

The conservative discord in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. massacre went up another octave on Monday when Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) threatened to file articles of impeachment if President Obama uses an executive order to try to reduce gun violence.

“The White House’s recent announcement they will use executive orders and executive actions to infringe on our constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms is an unconstitutional and unconscionable attack on the very founding principles of this republic,” Stockman said in a statement. “I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment.”

You must be near the same age as my own kiddos. One of my daughters had a “red checked granny type dress” that she loved like Linus with his blankie! It was starting to get ratty.

At that time I had no dryer so I hung my laundry. One day I got rid of it & told her someone must have taken it off the line while it was drying.

Trying not to ROTFLMAO! Hubby held on to a paisley one. I actually liked that shirt but he could no longer button it so it had to go! He still has a couple of those super wide ties that he hopes he might wear again. I let him keep those, lol!

        • Alma98

LOL! He actually could still fit it, it was just too shiny lol.

    – – -Obama On The Debt Ceiling: House GOP ‘Will Not Collect A Ransom For Not Crashing The American Economy’

    – — -President Obama today held the final press conference of his first term, and used the opportunity to reiterate that he is not interested in negotiating with House Republicans over the debt ceiling. “They will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the American economy,” Obama said:

Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize more spending. It simply allows the country to pay for spending that Congress has already committed to. These are bills that have already been racked up and we need to pay them…[House Republicans] will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the American economy. The financial well-being of the American people is not leverage to be used. The full faith and credit of the United States of America is not a bargaining chip.

    – -5 things we learned from Obama’s last 1st term press conference – –

    — –The president held the final press conference of his first term on Monday afternoon, less than a week before his second inauguration. Here’s what we learned from his remarks.

–☻1. [PRESIDENT]-Obama is determined not to repeat the brinkmanship over the debt ceiling that occurred in 2011.

The press conference was called so [PRESIDENT]-Obama could press his argument that the debt ceiling should be increased without any negotiation, despite the GOP insistence that each dollar increase in the debt limit be matched by a dollar in spending cuts. And Obama was emphatic on this point, describing the Republicans position as akin to “ransom.”

“They can act responsibly, and pay America’s bills, or they can act irresponsibly and put America through another economic crisis,” he said. “But they will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the American economy. The financial well-being of the American people is not leverage to be used. The full faith and credit of the United States of America is not a bargaining chip. And they better choose quickly, because time is running short.”
    – – ☻
    2. He would prefer Republicans try to shut down the government rather than default on the debt, although neither option is desirable.

    – –☻3. He is going to appoint women and minorities to some of the remaining posts on his White House staff and cabinet
    — — -SNIP – –
    – – —And Obama gave a strong defense of the virtues of diversity.
“When you look for the very best people, given the incredible diversity of this country, you’re going to end up with a diverse staff and a diverse — a diverse team, and that very diversity helps to create more effective policy making, and better decision making for me, because it brings different perspectives to the table,” Obama said.

Gay judge’s nomination back before legislature

The General Assembly’s judicial appointment subcommittees meet today to consider the full-time appointment of Richmond’s Manchester General District Judge Tracy Thorne-Begland — the first openly gay person to serve on the bench in the commonwealth. If the Courts of Justice Committees of the House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate certify his nomination for a six-year term, it will again be put to a vote of the GOP-dominated House, where it foundered last May in a late-hour decision that angered and embarrassed lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Though he had bipartisan support and had been certified in the committee process, Thorne-Begland’s appointment was derailed when social conservatives raised issues over his sexual orientation and some delegates with military backgrounds questioned his decision in 1992 to publicly come out while serving as an aviator in the U.S. Navy. At the time, the military had a policy — now defunct — against homosexuals serving in the armed forces.[….]

Chuck Todd: Obama Administration Brought Diversity Critique On Themselves
    by Noah Rothman | 6:10 pm, January 14th, 2013

NBC News Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd criticized President Barack Obama’s administration on Monday over the issue of the lack of diversity in the White House. Todd said that the White House was being held only to its own “higher standard,” noting that the administration “raised the bar” regarding expected standards of diversity. When the president’s reelection campaign “smacked around” Mitt Romney over his “binders full of women” comment, Todd says the White House invited this criticism.

Also have you noticed how much these folks bring up Mitt Romney so much. I guess Chuckie and company believed that he was gonna be the 45th President and that mean ol Barack Obama used his evil widdle campaign tactics to jack those chances up. We could have finally have a kissass as President who would have given us cocktail parties and such. Because thats what our coddled asses really want.

      • Town

Romney ass would’ve been in bed by 8:37 pm, no parties, no alcohol at social events and the press would have loved him for it.

    • nathkatun7

Lets see, Chuck Todd got an invitation from the White House to lodge false criticism of the President over manufactured nonsense about diversity? So far President Obama has named four white men to his National Security team. Three are replacing previous white men who occupied the position. Only one, the nominee for Sec. of State, is replacing a white female. But guess what, when it was rumored that Obama might appoint a distinguished African American woman to that position, the media, including prominent white media women, joined both male and female white members of Congress in trashing Dr. Susan Rice. Many of them actually advocated for the appointment of John Kerry.

Now, people like Chuck Todd are attacking the President over this manufactured outrage about diversity. Somehow, they think we are all afflicted with amnesia. We just don’t remember how, since the election that’s only two months ago, the media was enabling the likes of John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Kelly Ayotte, Susan Collins, in trashing Dr. Susan Rice who was being considered for Sec. of State. They also forget how people like Pat Buchanan, Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh were given megaphones to accuse the President of being anti-white males because he put two women on the Supreme Court.

I am sorry, but I have ZERO respect for people like Chuck Todd, the whole WH press corp., and most of the media pundits. If President Obama selected only women and people of color to fill his cabinet the likes of Chuck Todd would be accusing him of being a reverse racist who is also anti-white men.

To me, all these attacks on the President are all about one thing: They don’t want him in “their white house.” Too bad! The majority of Americans, of all races and genders, voted for him, whether the media likes it or not. They may have wanted a President Romney, but President Obama won. He is going to be in the WH for the next four years. They might as well get used to it.

WUH? Mind you, this is coming from a country that recently banned U.S. adoptions….(smdh)

Russia’s defence minister expressed horror on Monday that soldiers were still wrapping cloths around their feet instead of wearing socks, and vowed the historic practice must end this year. “I would like to give an order that in 2013, at least by the end of the year, we forget the word ‘foot cloths’,” a grim-faced Sergei Shoigu told military top brass at a televised meeting.

“I ask for extra funds to be issued if necessary so that we completely give up this concept in the armed forces.” Russia’s military leaders have repeatedly vowed to ban the practice, dating back a hundred years, as part of an attempt to modernise the sprawling armed forces.[….]

White privilege all the way! It never fails! It operates in all aspects of American life. Look at how many of the so called liberals who love Bill Clinton, but can’t wait to trash President Obama. Never mind the fact that for some of us oldies, President Obama is the most progressive President this country has ever elected. But even more glaringly, look at how the media vultures treat President Obama compared to how they treated President Bush. Why Chuck Todd, Major Garret and others think that they can treat the President as some clueless errand boy who should do the the bidding of the right wing nuts controlling Congress.

Even a white woman reporter, whose name i’ve forgotten, had the audacity to question the President’s commitment to diversity. The same President who put two women (one Hispanic and one Jewish) on the Supreme Court; put five women in his cabinet in his first term. Appointed the first African American in history as the Attorney General of the United States. Now he is being accused of being anti-diversity by the same people who were rooting for Mitt Romney to win the election. Talk about shameless hypocrisy!

What the debt ceiling is — and isn’tRepublicans are spending an awful lot of time conflating the absolute need to raise the debt ceiling with the absolute need to get the nation’s voracious spending under control. While both must be done, the former is not dependent upon the latter. Yet, you wouldn’t know it by listening to congressional Republicans.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.) have all engaged in this willful obfuscation as part of a new get-tough stance against President Obama, who has made it absolutely clear publicly and privately that he will not play this game with the debt ceiling again. But it was Camp in the GOP weekly address who used an analogy that gets right at what the debt ceiling is and what it isn’t.more here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2013/01/07/what-the-debt-ceiling-is-and-isnt/

    The Right Never Stops

    by BooMan
Mon Jan 14th, 2013 at 06:20:38 PM EST

George Packer’s article in The New Yorker about the increasing isolation of the South is interesting, but I wonder why I never see anyone mention how the GOP is just a constant annoying source of unnecessary stress for everyone. I mean it is completely unceasing. In Obama’s term it has been unrelenting obstruction, hallucinatory insults, and manufactured crises. But it was even worse under George W. Bush, where it was color-coded terror alerts and duct tape and WMD’s and terror terror terror and OMG GAYS and the War on Christmas and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I’m only scratching the surface here, but the right/south/GOP never ever lets the left get a moment’s rest. We are never allowed to get to a point where we can say, ‘Okay, that’s settled, now we can relax for a few weeks.’ The newest proposal is to have a fight over the debt ceiling every two months. I mean, what the fuck. Seriously?
I woke up when they impeached Bill Clinton. And I don’t think I’ve felt a moment’s peace since then. Not one single goddamn day has gone by since 1998 when the right wasn’t doing or saying something that I found stressful.

I may be an extreme case…a political junkie who is addicted to my own pain. But, it’s getting to everyone. It has to.

For the love of God, please, give us some rest already.

    – – – -A clear plurality of voters believe the nation’s gun laws are too lax and they expect President Obama and Congress to tighten them, according to a new poll for The Hill.

At the same time, however, voters tend to believe that stricter gun laws will not significantly reduce deaths from gun violence in the United States.

Those opinions reflect the complexity of an issue that has been center-stage politically since the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., last month in which 20 children and eight adults, including the killer, died.
    – – — -SNIP – — –

    — -In The Hill Poll, 49 percent of voters asserted that current gun laws are too lax, against 35 percent who said they were about right. The gun laws were judged to be too strict by 11 percent of voters.

A striking consensus was evident around the belief that Obama and Congress would come together to make the current laws pertaining to firearms more rigorous.

    – -Asked to set aside their personal opinions about the desirability of such a change, a full 64 percent of voters asserted that action was very likely or somewhat likely. Only 26 percent said that it was not very likely or not likely at all.

    The Tea Party’s last stand?

Posted by Greg Sargent on January 14, 2013 at 3:35 pm

So the big story of the day is that House Tea Partyers are vowing up and down that they may be willing to allow the country to default on its obligations to prove to Obama how serious they are about cutting spending.

Today, at his presser, Obama reiterated that there will be no negotiating over the debt ceiling — no concessions will be granted in exchange for the debt ceiling hike, period, full stop. And he explicitly said that “Congressional Republicans” will bear responsibility when Social Security checks, veterans benefits, and paychecks to food inspectors and air traffic controllers stop going out, and if and when the markets go haywire.

This signals a tough line ahead. Though the key question will be whether it holds, current indications are that it will. Jonathan Chait is encouraged, and sees a day of reckoning of sorts looming for the Tea Party:

Many of us have questioned whether Obama will actually follow through on his stated intention. In these games of chicken, he always seems ready to swerve at the last moment. What’s different here is that Obama seems so determined and explicit not to pay a ransom that he is leaving himself no room to backslide. If he pays the ransom, he’ll leave himself humiliated and exposed in a way he never has.

So the two years Obama and Boehner have spent trying to deflect, delay, and placate the mania of the tea party seem to have finally come to an end point.

    — – -Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX), who just began his second stint in the U.S. Congress, is already threatening to impeach President Obama should the administration use executive power to implement gun violence prevention efforts.

Stockman, who served one term in the mid-1990s, returned to the House of Representatives on January 3. Just 11 days later, he issued a warning that he intends to introduce articles of impeachment if necessary to obstruct any use of any executive order to keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and other dangerous people.

In a statement, Stockman denounced the president’s potential actions as “unconstitutional and unconscionable attack on the very founding principles of this republic,” saying:

    — – – – -Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will testify next Wednesday on the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, incoming chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) announced late Monday.
    – — -SNIP — –
“I appreciate Secretary Clinton’s desire and willingness to testify before the Committee as we continue to examine this deadly terrorist attack in an effort to ensure that nothing like it happens again,” Royce said in a statement. “My intention is for this hearing to focus on why this attack was not better anticipated, what leadership failures at the State Department existed, and what management deficiencies need to be corrected in order to better secure our diplomatic facilities abroad and protect our diplomats serving in them.

“It is important to learn all we can about what happened in Benghazi because at the end of the day, it could happen again. After all, al-Qaeda plans attacks over and over again.”

    – – – -Arizona Gov. Opts for Federal Medicaid Expansion — –

    — – –Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said Monday she plans to push for an expansion of the state’s Medicaid program under the federal health care law, a surprising decision that could have an impact on other Republican governors weighing a similar decision.

Brewer has opposed the federal health care law known as the Affordable Care Act, citing worries over a potential overreliance on federal funding.

    — A provision in the 2010 law allows for states to increase Medicaid coverage, and Brewer told lawmakers in her annual State of the State address on Monday that virtually all of the expansion would be funded by the federal government. Not taking the money wouldn’t contribute to the lowering of federal deficits, she said.

Any increase would also “include a circuit-breaker that automatically” would roll back enrollment if federal reimbursement rates decrease, Brewer said.
