Brown: Keep up the Bain attacks

The Ohio senator tells Salon that Obama’s private-equity attacks are working in his state

Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown has some advice for the Obama campaign: Ignore Bill Clinton and Cory Booker and keep up the attacks on Romney’s record at Bain Capital. “People in Ohio understand what this means,” he told Salon this weekend at the Netroots Nation conference in Providence, R.I. “Private equity can be a good thing, but I’ve seen the damage it can do in places around the state,” he explained.

The media’s gonna have to work harder to cover for Mitt! His surrogates are doubling down on the anti-teacher meme!

Romney Campaign Chair: ‘Taxpayers Really Do Want To Hear There Will Be Fewer Teachers’

Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign isn’t backing off the candidate’s claim that America needs fewer teachers, firefighters, and police officers. Instead, former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu (R), a top Romney campaign surrogate, backed Romney’s call this morning, telling MSNBC that changes in technology and population shifts have made layoffs of teachers and public safety officials necessary.

Romney’s original comments left little room for interpretation. President Obama “says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers,” Romney said Friday. “Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.” But to Sununu, the comments highlighted a “real issue” that showed Romney’s “wisdom,” he told MSNBC’s Chris Jansing today:

Atlanta’s historic Auburn Ave. again at crossroads

ATLANTA — The ghosts of Auburn Avenue still haunt the storied Atlanta street where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was born and black wealth thrived for decades.
Today, the street is a shell of its former self, the bustling mix of banks, night clubs, churches, meat markets and funeral homes long gone, replaced with crumbling facades and cracked sidewalks.

Hundreds of thousands of people still flock to Auburn Avenue to see King’s birth home, the church where he preached, and the crypt where he and his wife, Coretta, are buried — all located along the street. But tourists have little reason to linger.

Romney Campaign Chair: ‘Taxpayers Really Do Want To Hear There Will Be Fewer Teachers’
By Travis Waldron on Jun 11, 2012 at 11:40 am

SUNUNU: Let me respond as a taxpayer, not as a representative of the Romney campaign. There are municipalities, there are states where there is flight of population. And as the population goes down, you need fewer teachers. As technology contributes to community security and dealing with issues that firefighters have to deal with, you would hope that you can, as a taxpayer, see the benefits of the efficiency and personnel that you get out of that.

JANSING: But even if there’s movement to the suburbs, teachers and policemen are needed somewhere.

SUNUNU: But I’m going to tell you there are places where just pumping money in to add to the public payroll is not what the taxpayers of this country want.

JANSING: Do you think that taxpayers of this country want to hear fewer firefighters, fewer teachers, fewer police officers, from a strategic standpoint?

SUNUNU: If there’s fewer kids in the classrooms, the taxpayers really do want to hear there will be fewer teachers. […] You have a lot of places where that is happening. You have a very mobile country now where things are changing. You have cities in this country in which the school population peaked ten, 15 years ago. And, yet the number of teachers that may have maintained has not changed. I think this is a real issue. And people ought to stop jumping on it as a gaffe and understand there’s wisdom in the comment.

The facts of many of the layoffs don’t back up Sununu’s claims. Classrooms are busting at the seams because there are fewer teachers, and cities and towns across the country are closing entire public safety departments due to budget cuts. And, as Jansing noted, even if the population shifts were a legitimate argument, teachers and public safety officials are still needed where the population moves.

Federal, state, and local governments have laid off more than 700,000 workers since Obama took office. Had that not happened, the unemployment rate would be a full point lower and the economic recovery would be stronger. To Romney and his campaign surrogates, however, those job losses are a step in “the right direction.”

SUNUNU: But I’m going to tell you there are places where just pumping money in to add to the public payroll is not what the taxpayers of this country want.

Translation: No more teachers for the inner cities.

Even though the Constutition specifies that the country is obligated in protecting its citizens, it is unconstitutional to have a fire department. Just look up “How to put out a fire” on eHow or Wiki and either of those sites should have step by step instructions, bucket, and a ton of water should do the trick.

Huckabee: Justices should strike down health care to improve their polls
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) on Sunday advised justices on the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down President Barack Obama’s landmark health care reform law in order to improve their public approval rating.

A New York Times/CBS News poll released last week showed that approval of the high court had slipped to 44 percent. Sixty percent now oppose life tenure for justices, and 76 percent believe their rulings are influenced by personal opinions.

“The American people are at a high ebb of their disapproval of Obamacare,” Huckabee shrugged when confronted with the poll numbers on Sunday. “So if the Supreme Court wants to improve their standing if they see this poll, they will overturn Obamacare.

“First on the basis of the law and the Constitution — which is the primary reason they ought to do it — and then because they, in fact, realize that it’s just bad policy.”

Just how aghast was the WH press at “doing fine”?

Whenever a president of the United States casually says something during a press conference that is genuinely jarring and legitimate cause for public concern–for example, “Apart from the GDP’s slight slacking, the health of our economy is good, except for the threat posed to it by some possibly hostile space aliens who just landed in Iowa”–you can be sure that that president will receive a follow-up question; in this exampled case, one likely related to invading space aliens.

Yet here was the White House press’ instant reaction to President Obama’s outrageously ludicrous and deeply concerning claim last Friday that the private economy is “doing fine”:

Thank you, sir. There are a couple of books out with, essentially, details about national security issues. There are reports

Why the crickets? Because the reporters had heard the president’s remark in context. When such wording is only later characterized as outrageously ludicrous and deeply concerning, you can be sure its actual significance was pretty much squat

    • And this is why the media conniption is bullshit and nothing more than them following Romney’s lead and pushing his campaign’s talking points.

Self-described PBO supporters need to wake the hell up, stop falling for the okie doke and start writing open letters to the media instead of blaming PBO.

This is what not listening looks like
By Laura Conaway – Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:32 PM EDT.

Michigan Republicans say they need to pass a sweeping set of new regulations against abortion — starting with criminalizing most abortions after 20 weeks — to help women. If you watch tape from the House hearing last week, though, you can see that it’s really about putting the constitutional right to abortion out of reach.

Bonnie Bucqueroux of Lansing Online News put together the video above from the hearing. She reports that the committee chair gaveled the meeting closed with witnesses against the bill still waiting to testify. At the 3:40 mark, you can watch as one of those witnesses gives her testimony anyway.

WOMAN: I am a voter and I am a mother. At 43 years of age, I became pregnant with quadruplets.

MAN: They’ve got another meeting coming in, so…

WOMAN: I’ll be fast. The chances of a woman delivering healthy quadruplets is minimal. I was forced with the agonizing decision of deciding to selectively reduce or risk all four of my babies. Not a one of you has the right to tell me what decision I should have made. My babies, my body, my decision. Thank you.

The woman almost shouts to be heard, and no one listens.

Bucqueroux says the full Michigan House is expected to vote on the anti-abortion bills tomorrow. That gives you time to read them. They’re not light reading, exactly, but they are in plain enough language that you can get what’s going on: Michigan House Bill 5711, Michigan House Bill 5712, and Michigan House Bill 5713.

I will say this for the Bush people:

They did try to reach out to Hispanics (probably because Jeb is married to one and has children by her…the Bush family isn’t going to want to treat Hispanics like crap because Hispanics are in their family) and they did have high-level Negroes in their administration. Those Negroes might be suspect but they had them in there.

Also, Bush reached out to black churches with the faith-based thing…maybe he got an extra half a percentage point of the vote? So I guess he tried, whether for optics or for making white people feel good or whatever.

  • But to suggest that President Obama has somehow held back business profitability during what has been a tepid recovery from the Great Recession simply ignores what is taking place on corporate balance sheets. According to an analysis by Moody’s Analytics for The Fiscal Times, profitability in non-financial firms surged in recent quarters to 15 percent, a level not seen since the late 1960s.

The rating firm’s survey of the 1,100 non-financial companies it follows also found that they were sitting on cash hordes in excess of $1.24 trillion last December. Apple alone was sitting on nearly $100 billion. The entire corporate sector had over $2 trillion in cash. Alas, robust hiring has not followed in the wake of surging profits. “Giving more tax breaks to corporations that are awash in cash is not going to lead to anything,” said Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize-winning economist at Columbia University after serving as President Clinton’s chief economic adviser and top economist at the World Bank. “It’s a lack of demand that’s really impeding investment.”

Stiglitz is among the growing number of economists and business leaders who believe that lagging income, whether for people who already have jobs or those who are still un- or under-employed, has become the central problem facing the U.S. economy. Stagnant income explains why the rebound has failed to become self-sustaining, they say.

Millions of Americans who never lost their jobs during the downturn have gone years without a raise. Others remain on short hours. If self-employed, they find less work. Millions more, especially in the public sector, are seeing sharp cutbacks in their pensions and benefits, which leads them to cut back on discretionary spending. Most householders have seen declines in their home values and retirement accounts, triggering a negative “wealth effect” that also holds down spending.

TheWashingtonPost `Big government’ aid for cops, firefighters and teachers is popular
    By Greg Sargent

This morning, top Romney surrogate John Sununu defended Mitt Romney’s declaration that we don’t need more cops, firefighters or teachers, arguing Romney had it right on the substance and the politics.

“If there’s fewer kids in the classroom, the taxpayers really do want to hear that there’s fewer teachers — absolutely,” Sununu said, adding that there is “wisdom” in Romney’s comments.

It’s unclear how to evaluate Sununu’s claim, given the caveat about having “fewer kids in the classroom.” But Romney himself, in delivering his now-infamous comments, suggested that the American people didn’t support hiring more cops, firefighters or teachers.

So now that this has become a central issue in the campaign, what do Americans think of the idea of sending aid to states to protect the jobs of teachers and first responders?

Turns out we have polling on this question — and the idea is popular.

Way back in the mists of ancient history, when Obama proposed the American Jobs Act, pollsters took the judicious step of polling its individual provisions. The relevant findings:

The Balls To Act Like Republicans
Sanford Levinson wonders if the Democrats will grow them:

I fully expect a Republican majority in the Senate, should Mitt Romney be elected, [to modify the filibuster rule by reducing the number of votes required to bring a measure to the floor when the Senate next convenes]. The Republican Party is determined to make its mark and will brook no opposition from 49, let alone 41, Democrats. What if the next Senate is evenly split? Then we will have the opportunity see one of the more bizarre features of the Constitution in action: If Obama and Biden lose the election, Biden will remain president of the Senate when it convenes, as required by the Twentieth Amendment, for the first time on January 3, 2013 (among other things, in order to count the electoral votes and declare the winners). This means that he would get to break a presumptive tie between filibuster-abolishing Republicans and now-filibuster-friendly Democrats. If Biden voted to maintain the filibuster, that would presumably settle the issue for the entire session and therefore guarantee that Democrats could block radical Republican measures, at least.

The question, of course, is what if—unexpectedly, but not impossibly—not only are Obama and Biden reelected, but the Democrats retain the Senate and even gain back the House? Will they have the political will to do what I predict the Republicans would do were they a majority?

    Obama’s High-Risk High-Reward Two-Term Strategy

    Scott Galupo hypothesizes:

Let’s assume that the Supreme Court overturns the Affordable Care Act in full; there would go Obama’s signature domestic achievement. He achieved no significant fiscal reforms. He extended the Bush tax cuts… Obama has perhaps accelerated America’s exit from the quagmires of Iraq and Afghanistan. His rhetoric sounds different than his predecessor’s. … In the big picture, we’re left with a stimulus whose impact on the economy, whatever it was, has washed out completely; the tepid Dodd-Frank reforms of Wall Street; and a public affirmation of same-sex marriage.

Yes. As I’ve noted, few first term presidents have achieved so much so tenuously. But all of this is a function of two things: first, the crushing burden of grappling with an economy in a tailspin and two wars in which victory was not easily defined (but getting the hell out of Iraq and killing much of al Qaeda and bin Laden is about as good as anyone would have forecast); and second, the long game strategy for lasting change. Obama cannot really leave his mark until this December when much of his fiscal strategizing against the GOP since 2010 will reach a moment of truth. Ditto Iran – also reaching a critical tipping point; and the actual implementation of universal healthcare – if it survives SCOTUS. And if you think Dodd-Frank was tepid, wait till the Romney-Ryan era and Wall Street will be back to the casino in no time.

There’s a painful irony in all this: Obama’s legacy, more than most presidents, will be measured by his second term, because so many of his first term initiatives depend on a second. Without a second term, it could all be washed away – to Romney’s enormous benefit:

Romney is on track, if elected, to enter the Oval Office with a stronger wind at his back than many of its previous occupants, including Obama. And that, more than anything else, may be what’s at stake in this election, at least for the combatants themselves. Like him or not, Obama has already done a lot of the hardest, dirtiest jobs on America’s 2009 to-do list. If he’s reelected in November, he gets the chance to preserve (and, finally, enjoy) the fruits of his labors: an improving economy, a universal health-care system, a safer war on terror, perhaps even that elusive deficit deal. Meanwhile, if Romney wins, he gets to build his presidency on ground his predecessor has very conveniently cleared for him—and Obama’s achievements go unrealized or uncredited.

Obama’s long game was always a high-risk high-reward strategy. And this is when the nail-biting starts in earnest.

    by Joy-Ann Reid | June 11, 2012 at 2:02 PM

The Barack Obama re-election campaign Tuesday will air its first radio ad targeting African-Americans, campaign officials confirmed.

The 60-second ad, entitled “We’ve Got Your Back,” appeals to black voters’ nostalgia about the election of the nation’s first African-American president, calling for those voters to stand with the president again in November.

“Four years ago we made history,” a male announcer says. “Now it’s time to move forward and finish what we started together. We have to show the President we have his back.” The spot is inter-cut with audio from President Obama’s speeches, touching on familiar political and campaign themes.

  • ‘Fela!’ Will Return to Broadway for a Summer Run

The Tony Award-winning musical “Fela!,” which ran 14 months on Broadway before closing last year, will return next month for a four-week engagement at the Al Hirschfeld Theater as part of the show’s world tour, the producers of “Fela!” confirmed on Monday.

A biographical look at the Afrobeat musician Fela Kuti of Nigeria, the production will star Tony nominee Sahr Ngaujah at most performances, which are scheduled to run July 9 to Aug. 4, before resuming the tour in Australia and Japan.

Such return engagements are relatively rare on Broadway, though Jujamcyn Theaters, which owns the Hirschfeld, arranged for a similar limited encore of “Hair” last summer at another of its theaters. As with “Hair,” which was also on tour, the “Fela!” producers – who include Jay-Z and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith – are capitalizing on an empty Broadway theater to try to make money and draw coverage for the show’s tour.

OMG….We knew it was jealousy and hustlenomics at the root of Smiley and West’s campaign against the President. But I truly think this Smiley needs to have an episode dedicated to him on Discovery Fit and Health’s next Psych Week.

Check this from Black newspaper “LA Focus (which has Smiley shucking and grinning on the front cover):

“Let me be very clear,” he goes on. “I’m not demonizing him. If we’re talking about Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, there is no choice. I voted for Barack Obama the last time, even though he and all his friends tried to kill me and left me by the side of the road for dead, I still believed he was the best choice over John McCain, and I’m going to vote for him again because he is still the best choice.

….Smiley further believes that not enough has been done to elevate other blacks on the national political scene.

“This president has not had any black coat tails,” states Smiley. “Name one black politician who has been elected to office because of Barack Obama. He has been successful to a degree, but there isn’t a string of Negroes who have been elevated because of him.”

Code: This Nukka was FOSED TO HELP ME COME UP!! Yet, hardly anyone white knows me. WAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

    • aleth

See this mindset can make us all go ——-I don’t remember any black politician given Obama their coat tails in order for him to be elected senator.. . hell to get into the chicago senate.

Many democrats got elected on his coat tails but is it his fault if other black politicians don’t step up to the plate seeking elected office. How about the fact that the CBC will never retire. So in order for “negros” to be elevated by Obama we have to be in elected office? This means we can’t be doctors, lawyers, serve his cabinets, legislative branch etc.

No the real statement he meant to say is “he did not elevate Tarvis, Cornel or Boyce” They were used to the old ways of the Clintonistas… face time in the white house and being the voice of the white house to the black community. This is how they made their hustle and deals.

Obama can speak for himself. He is comfortable in who he is that he can speak directly to ALL American people whether they want to hear him or not. That is the beauty of a man without an inferiority complex.

How did they try to kill him and left him for dead? I am curious about this one. Men, the election of Obama has ruined the mind of some white and black males, they all jocking for identity.

Sucks when you define yourself based on whose in office and what you seek to gain.

One thing that always has be curious is why West has this anger at Obama. Obama talked to West prior to the election about his viewpoint and their differences. Even West knows that, Obama let you know where he stood in respect to West mindset and policy. So what is the big deal?

Why they so obsessed with Obama? Damn can the man breathe. He ain’t Jesus and he ain’t gonna save everybody.

    • MsKitty

I voted for Barack Obama the last time, even though he and all his friends tried to kill me and left me by the side of the road for dead,

damn, there’s so much to write, but I’ll be back later.

    • rikyrah

I see that Travis is experiencing amnesia.

Here’s how it went down. I, along with millions of other Black folks, listened to Travis every Tuesday and Thursday on the TJMS giving his commentary. During the primary season of 2007, Travis’ commentaries on the TJMS became more snide and condescending towards his audience. The contempt that he felt towards the audience, for daring to support then Senator Barack Obama was palpable. He was rude and disrespectful towards his audience. And the more that the Black community drifted towards Senator Obama, the worse Travis got. The final straw for the TJMS audience is why Travis’ ass will never see the inside of this White House:

Senator Obama was engaged in a primary fight with Hillary, and said, no, he couldn’t come to Travis’ Negro Superbowl – he had to campaign. He offered to send Michelle in his place, and Travis disrespected Michelle, and then tried to lie about it, which was exposed on Roland Martin’s morning radio show that he used to have on WVON-AM, Chicago.

Whatever ambivalence Black people had towards then- Senator Barack Obama, there has NEVER been any ambivalence about our feelings about Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama. We, as a community, have been very clear how we feel about her. Once Travis was exposed, the TJMS audience, which had tried, with as much patience as possible to give Travis time to correct himself, had had their last Black nerve snapped, and told Travis ‘ I don’t know where you’re going, but you gots to get the hell up outta here.’

      • Miranda

Word…it got so bad that Tom and Jay had a brief falling out because Tom was trying to stick with his buddy Tavis and Jay kept making lil comments till it was pretty much Tom getting told by his audience “its us or him”…and then Tom allowed Tavis to pretend he was leaving his weekly TJMS commentary on his own (but we know the truth).

        • AxelFoley

Yup, I remember that. Tom tried to show out and made Jay go home when everything finally blew up. Jay basically told Tom to fuck off and went home that day.

I was on my way to work that morning and I was dyin’ from laughing so hard. Tom finally left Tavis’ monkey ass alone.

      • AxelFoley

Tavis, Cornell, Boyce–all them nukkas–I will NEVER forget nor forgive them for showing their black asses out. Fuck them today, fuck them tomorrow, fuck them forever.

    • rikyrah

This president has not had any black coat tails,” states Smiley. “Name one black politician who has been elected to office because of Barack Obama. He has been successful to a degree, but there isn’t a string of Negroes who have been elevated because of him.”

Ok, I’ll take this on too. There are a bunch of new-fangled Kneegrows that supposedly were to follow in Barack Obama’s footsteps. I’ll take them one at a time.

The Dark Sith – The Dark Sith couldn’t win his Senate Seat, because he wanted the Snowflake, and the GOP sunk his ass with the Snowflake. How is that Barack Obama’s fault? And, there were enough Black folk that were LOYAL to Barack Obama that he didn’t need to go and give the Dark Sith shyt. A jealous traitor who would have been a leaking sieve if the President had actually given him a job inside of the Administration.

Deval Patrick – won his Governorship, governed well, had the President’s back, and even during a hard time for Democrats, never ran away from the President, and won re-election, and is a positive surrogate.

Adrian Fenty- ah, yes, another one of these new-fangled Kneegrows. Guess what? Fenty forgot the basics – you don’t disrespect the base, and you don’t disrespect the elders.

Black folks supported Fenty. He didn’t win in a skate; he won by a landslide last time.

He forgot who brought him to the dance. You could see it happen slowly….how could you have, in a majority Black city, only ONE out of the 10 most powerful positions in the city, be a Black person?
I always tells folks; it ain’t Idaho -it’s Washington, D.C. with a Black professional class that not only predates the Civil Rights Movement, but does so by decades. To even utter the words, ‘ I couldn’t find anyone qualified who was Black’, in D.C. – You need your tongue cut out.

And then, there was Michelle Rhee.

She wouldn’t even be qualified to TEACH in D.C., but he put her in charge of it?

Where she proceeded to not only fire teachers, but do it in the most humiliating way possible, and Fenty didn’t think those teachers had friends, family in those Black neighborhoods that voted for him?

I spent 7 years in the trenches of urban education, and I never liked her from day one.

How come Black folk are supposed to take the poke in their eyes from other Black folk? How come, on the ground there, they felt disrespected and dismissed – why are you doing the same? You think those folks don’t know why they turned against Fenty? You gonna try and tell me that it was ‘ all in their imagination’?

Who brags about creating dog parks, while cutting affordable daycare for those mothers that need it most?

He utterly screwed over the cabbies in D.C., which got that immigrant population against him.

He disrespected Dr. Dorothy Height among other elders (sounds like what Travis did, right?), and then Fenty is stunned when Black folks threw him over?

      We then have Artur Davis.

Davis was a candidate that thought he could spit all over the Black constituency, as he begged for White votes, and that Black folks would just ‘ understand’.

What else do you say about a candidate, who, from his election into Congress, never served the interests of his constituents?

When graded by the CBC Monitor Report Card, the best he could do, in a COMPLETELY SAFE Congressional District, was get an ‘F’.

Yes, he was in a completely safe congressional district and received failing grades during this time.

Davis distinguished himself by being the ONLY member of the Congressional Black Caucus to vote AGAINST HEALTHCARE REFORM. A bill of this importance maybe comes along once or twice in a member’s career, and he chose, not ONCE, but TWICE, to spit in the face of the people who entrusted their votes to him to REPRESENT THEM…

He got exactly what he deserved.

Remember, Davis was given an opportunity to correct himself with the first Healthcare Reform vote, and do the right thing. He chose not to. He chose to spit in the eye of those in his district who definitely needed healthcare to pass.

THEN, Davis thought he could spit in the eye of all the Black political apparatus that had come before him.

      From the NYTimes
Mr. Sparks, who is white, won endorsements from the state’s four major black political groups, while Mr. Davis intentionally declined to seek their support.

How strong was the rebuke of Davis by the Black community that he dismissed?

      From NetNoir:
Davis won only two of the 11 counties in Alabama where African-American voters are a majority and lost some counties in the rural Black Belt by huge, double-digit margins. In Lowndes County, where 70 percent of the population is black, Sparks, who is white, won by 29 points. In Perry County, with a 67 percent black population, his victory margin was 44 percent.

Sparks even bested Davis by 16 points in Davis’s home base of Jefferson County, where Birmingham is located, and Davis won just two of the 12 counties he’s represented since 2002.

Artur lost his OWN DAMN POLLING PLACE.

Black folk, in ALABAMA, would rather the White candidate over YOU, Artur. Don’t know if you get this, but that means something.

Finally, we get to Cory Booker.

Another new fangled Kneegrow who chose do betray the President of the United States on National Television. And, the President is supposed to try and save his ass or support him EVER?

It’s not the President’s responsibility to tell these new-fangled Kneegrows, that if you go around spitting in the eye of the base upon which you want to build that ‘ larger political office’, don’t be shocked if they’re not there. That’s not the responsibility of this President.

At least 70% of the Congressional Black Caucus was for HILLARY, and only turned their support to POTUS when they realized that their constituents would skin them alive – POTUS has never had any reason to believe that these folks support him, so why should he do so in kind?

    – – —During the primaries, Romney declared, “I like Voter ID laws by the way… more of them,” but one of his top advisers once admitted that it’s an “undeniable fact” such laws can disenfranchise voters.

Michael Mukasey, a top Romney legal adviser, former federal judge and former Attorney General, warned about voter ID’s potential to block eligible citizens from voting. In a 2008 speech, Mukasey noted “the undeniable fact that voter ID laws can burden some citizens’ right to vote” before threatening to use the Voting Rights Act to block state measures that “are used improperly to deny the right to vote,” a move current Attorney General Eric Holder has used in South Carolina and Texas.

At the same time, the Court acknowledged the undeniable fact that voter ID laws can burden some citizens’ right to vote. It is important for states to implement and administer such laws in a way that minimizes that possibility. And it is important for the Department to do its part to guard against that possibility. We will not hesitate to use the tools available to us — including the Voting Rights Act — if these laws, important though they may be, are used improperly to deny the right to vote.

    ‘Ignorance and Sophistry 101’
By Steve Benen – Mon Jun 11, 2012 4:27 PM EDT.

Mitt Romney and his campaign aides strongly believe policymakers can “help the American people” by laying off school teachers, police officers, and firefighters. The vast majority of the American mainstream doesn’t seem to agree, but Romney has apparently convinced Rush Limbaugh.

Nobody’s opposed to cops or firefighters or teachers — but they aren’t private sector jobs,” Limbaugh said. “They do not contribute to economic growth. Their purpose is otherwise. They have an entirely different purpose: public safety, public education, this kind of thing. But there’s no growth in the economy. “If you add those jobs — and if there aren’t other types of private sector jobs added while at the same time we’re adding to the fire rolls and the cop rolls and teachers — we are reducing the size of the private sector. This is Marxism 101. It’s also Ignorance and Sophistry 101.”

Because the Left is Stupid, Too

    by BooMan

…I want you to keep these two ideas in mind: that all administrations try to create a positive impression with different audiences, and that all administrations are ultimately pragmatic unless they have so much congressional support that they can be ideological.

…The truth is that the Obama administration has been frustrated on some of its main priorities, and has had to make compromises it didn’t want to make in order to achieve its goals in every other area. But they’re not going to say that their health care bill is a shell of what they hoped for. They’re going to trumpet all the good things that are in the bill. They’re not going to focus on the mess in Afghanistan; they’re going to point to progress and their commitment to get out soon. They’re not going to rigidly oppose the Republicans’ demands that we dismantle the social safety net; they’re going to make good faith offers that they nonetheless are confident will be refused. They want to appear reasonable in comparison with the Republicans, not as just the other side of an inflexible coin.
The Left just doesn’t know how to interpret this kind of message management and subtle strategy. Too many of us take everything literally. Let me give you an example…

As reported in Ryan Lizza’s recent piece for the New Yorker, the Obama administration has been talking a lot to the press about how a second term might shake out. As part of that, they’ve expressed the hope that having a good election night in November might “break the fever” that has overtaken the right and get them to come to the table with a more reasonable set of demands next year. This hope has been received with open derision on the left because it is assumed that the administration is as hopelessly naïve as they sound…

Let me be blunt. Not only would it be a bad idea for the president to suggest that our present gridlock might remain unchanged in his second term, that simple idea represents the single biggest danger to his reelection prospects. Mitt Romney has only one compelling argument for his presidency. His platform of programs are unpopular. He can’t compete with the president for coolness or popularity. He didn’t get bin-Laden. His business record is as much a liability as an asset. He’s a gaffe machine. His one and only compelling argument is that he might be better able to work with the Democrats (who, at least, believe in governance) than Obama has been able to work with Republicans….

Never mind the deeply troubling implications of this argument, …All that matters is that it might work. In fact, nothing else has much of a chance of convincing people that Romney would be preferable to Obama.
For the president to buy into that idea for even one moment would be beyond irresponsible. It would be borderline suicidal. And, yet, the left wants him to make a variant of that argument. Instead of bitching at him for alleged naïvety, we should be saluting him for his political acumen.
But, sometimes, we’re as stupid, partisan, and bloodthirsty as a any tea partier.

    • Miranda

      Totally agree with this

    • The Left needs to repeat this over and over again until it sinks in.

  • Miranda

Can you imagine if Rep John Lewis put a flag with Black Power written on it outside his office??

(CNN) – Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who ran as a tea party favorite in her Republican presidential bid this cycle, posed outside her House office Monday with a flag widely known as a symbol for the tea party movement.

The flag stands in the spot traditionally reserved for state and U.S. flags.

“I’m pleased to have Gadsden Flag outside my office. I remain committed to reducing size/scope of federal gov,” she tweeted, along with the photo.

    – – –Romney Economic Adviser Criticizes Obama In Foreign Paper, Calls For More Austerity – – –

    – — –Over the weekend, an op-ed authored by one of 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s economic advisers appeared in a German newspaper. In the piece, Glenn Hubbard criticized the Obama administration’s approach to Europe’s ongoing economic woes, instead calling for the adoption of more austerity:

“Unfortunately, the advice of the U.S. government regarding solutions to the crisis is misleading. For Europe and especially for Germany,” Mr. Hubbard wrote, according to a translation of his article from the Handelsblatt Web site.

He opposed what he described as the Obama administration’s efforts “to persuade Germany to stand up financially weak governments and banks in the euro zone so that the Greek crisis would not spread to other states.” […]

Mr. Hubbard proposed a classic conservative pro-austerity, anti-Keynesian approach, arguing that cutting government spending will restore public confidence, encourage growth and avert future tax increases.

    – – – – –SNIP- — –

    – —THIS- –>Aside from the fact that Hubbard took out an op-ed in a foreign paper in which to blast the President, explicitly taking politics beyond “the water’s edge,” he is advocating for a doubling down on austerity that has simply made Europe’s economic situation worse. As this chart shows, austerity in Europe goes hand-in-hand with a contracting economy:)

    – —Connecticut State Insurance Will Cover Abortion As ‘Essential’ Health Benefit – – –

    — – –Connecticut residents who take part in their state’s health care plan will have access to full abortion services when the plan goes into effect in 2014, a state health panel decided last week.

The state’s decision means that elective abortions — all abortions, not just those in the case of health risks, rape or incest– count as an essential health service. This has already sparked debate in Connecticut, and will likely prompt more conversations about abortion services across the country. But the measure passed easily through Connecticut’s health board:

In Connecticut, every private health insurance plan already covers elective abortions, said Victoria Veltri, the state’s healthcare advocate. However, for this new essential benefits plan, the state must create a model — using the state employee plan, the federal employee plan or a private plan — for what is required to be covered. […]

Connecticut is ahead of others on making this decision, members of the state panel said Friday.

“It’s a matter of health. We wanted to protect a woman’s right to chose,” said Veltri. “I didn’t suspect that this would be an issue here.”

As states set up exchanges to comply with the Affordable Care Act, they will make similar choices about which services will be considered “essential” and therefore covered under the statewide plan.

    – —Commerce Secretary John Bryson, who was involved in two car accidents over the weekend and suffered a seizure, notified President Barack Obama on Monday that he is taking a medical leave of absence, effective immediately.

Bryson’s functions and duties have been transferred to Deputy Secretary Rebecca Blank, who will serve as acting secretary of commerce.

    — “I notified President Obama this evening that effective immediately I am taking a medical leave of absence so that I can focus all of my attention on resolving the health issues that arose over the weekend,” Bryson said in a memo addressed to Blank.

“During the period of my illness, I will not perform the functions and duties of my office. Therefore, by operation of law, as my first assistant you will act in my stead for the duration of my absence,” he wrote.

Press secretary Jay Carney, who told reporters earlier that the White House was “obviously concerned” by the news of Bryson’s accidents and seizure, acknowledged Bryson’s leave of absence in a statement to the press.

    – – – –President Obama, continuing his harried fundraising pace, will hit six events on Tuesday that are expected to bring in at least $3.6 million for his campaign.

Two of the most lucrative are $40,000-a-head “campaign roundtables” as the president’s team has dubbed them — closed-press events where high-dollar donors can meet and talk privately with the president and remain anonymous. Obama will attend two on Tuesday — one at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore with 15 guests and one at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia with 25 guests, according to a campaign official.– –

Obama is also scheduled to attend two $10,000-per-ticket events, one at the Baltimore Hyatt Regency and the other at a private home in Owings Mills, Maryland. The home belongs to developer Josh E .Fidler and his wife, Genine, an Obama bundler, the Baltimore Sun reported. A total of 175 supporters are expected at both, the campaign official said.

And for those who can’t afford those events, there are two fundraisers with ticket prices starting at $250. The first is a reception at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore, where Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is scheduled to introduce Obama and the campaign is expecting 500 supporters to attend. The second is at the Franklin Institute, where another 500 people are expected.
