Monday Afternoon Thread: High on Obama

  • Protesters rush into building housing Obama campaign headquarters

By Andy Grimm and Cynthia Dizikes Tribune reporters

    11:42 a.m. CDT, May 14, 2012
Dozens of demonstrators dashed into the Loop building housing President Barack Obama’s campaign headquarters this morning, slipping past security guards and running up escalators as they kicked off what they called a “Week Without Capitalism.”

Eight protesters were led out in handcuffs about half an hour later after they refused to clear the lobby. They were cheered by other demonstrators who began dancing and singing folk and gospel songs.

The demonstration, organized by the Catholic Worker movement. began with about 100 demonstrators picketing at Prudential Plaza and passing out rolls to commuters in what they called a symbolic invitation to break bread with world leaders expected here this weekend for the NATO summit.

    • Bri

      They are troublemakers.

    • isonprize

So, aside from getting some publicity by ‘storming’ the Obama campaign office, what was the purpose of the protest?

      Week with Capitalism? Weak Sauce…

      • Miranda

yeah, I’m trying to figure out what a “Week without Capitalism” is supposed to mean.

        • isonprize

Girl, you had me standing up at my desk (home office) with my FIST IN THE AIR, after reading your post about pastors and how they shouldn’t be fallin’ for the okey doke!!

LOLOL I had to laugh at myself.

          • Miranda

I am just tired, completely tired of people allowing themselves to be manipulated at the expense of US. Its maddening! Every last pastor they spoke to has a congregation full of people that have benefitted in some way by very specific actions of this President. The only thing standing between us and dire poverty was President Obama. Imagine no stimulus plan at all….nothing. That’s what the rethugs wanted…NOTHING. Nothing at all – double the people that got laid off. Imagine no moratorium on foreclosures. imagine no rescue of the auto industry – at all.

But somebody stick a microphone in your face over ssm, and now you believe after all that, this issue makes it harder for black people to vote for Obama. Really? Because being too hungry to get up would probably make it more difficult for me personally. Living on the streets probably would have deterred me. SSM, not so much.

Every last one of those pastors have parents in their church that rely on funding for pre-k programs that the rethugs have been eliminating bit by bit. Every one of those pastors have elderly members or children of the elderly that utilize Meals on Wheels that the rethugs busy trying to cut.

But here come CBS to ask you about SSM and you can’t wait to open your damn mouth.

That kind of mess just makes me ill.

          • Camille

            Thank you!

In the end it is their congregations who suffer.

For the corrupt “Bishop” Harry Jackson’s of the world, they only get fatter on the bribes and grease thrown their way by the ruthless GOP in exchange for suppressing the black vote.

      • Aquagranny911

“A week without capitalism?” WTF! And why go into Obama campaign headquarters? Did they want to stop the staff from buying copy paper, envelops & stamps? These people are deranged, I assume they were ows. Were they beating drums & chanting “mic check?” It would have been real fun if they were also naked & painted blue. I just can’t take this BS seriously.

So, when POTUS and his team bring up the Bain attacks we’ve got POLITICO going for the “Obama’s Wall Street Problem” and Joe Klein at Time magazine saying since Romney wants to repeal Dodd/Frank he should come out for breaking up all the big banks (a position to the LEFT of POTUS and that goes against all he’s said about less regulation being necessary).

How you know POTUS is winning: the MSM goes into overdrive trying to save the Romney campaign with helpful suggestions and starts attacking POTUS for making the attack.

    • Miranda

Romney’s campaign is completely f’ed…….he’s been running around talking about too much regulations and the face of “we dont need no stinkin regulations” has to go on TV and explain why 2 billion dollars was lost in a crap shoot. I dont care how rosy and nice the media treat Jamie Dimon and how they try and dismiss that loss as “minimal”…President Obama’s gonna torture Mitt during the economic debates with this. I mean completely torture him. As soon as the right question comes up – I hope PBO yells “hit the lights”…and he puts on a show over this. He needs backup singers and all to put on a complete show that simply tortures Romney.

      • Ebogan63

That 2 Billion Dollar bet that was lost was the best gift Richard Cordray and PBO could have gotten.

Klein needs to have a seat over ‘breaking up the big banks’ them banks have lawyers, remember how long it took for AT&T to be broken up?

        • Jeremy

          Very True !

It took a long time to break up conglomerates like AT&T and Standard Oil. And even if you broke up the big banks it still wouldn’t mitigate the risk taking and potential threats to the economy. You need to have common sense regulations in order to significantly reduce contagion to the economy.

Even if you broke up the banks and you got rid of Dodd Frank and other regulations from years prior you would have still seen problems because the excessive risk taking and irresponsibility would have went unchecked and unsupervised.

The media is trying to do anything they can to keep Obama from blowing out Willard because they know that he is no match for Obama.

miranda- – — –O.K.- —THIS comes under the HEADING:- —“BITTER BOYce”- —IZZAT U??:- —–

    – – —Dr Boyce: CNN’s Racist Depiction of The Black Church and Gay Marriage– — –

—- – —On the front page of CNN today, there was an interesting article about the divide between the Obama Administration and the African American church.

The author of the piece seems to be implying that black church opposition to gay marriage is hypocritical, in large part because the bible being quoted by Christians is the same one that promoted the institution of slavery.

    – -I was immediately irked by the insinuation that somehow, anyone who opposes gay marriage is driven by the same ignorance that led some enslavement of other human beings. CNN is a network that has shown itself to be in support of gay rights (Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon are members of the gay community, and the network supported Lemon’s book about the agony of being black and gay). The position is admirable, since we can appreciate the concept of providing equal rights to everyone.

I don’t oppose gay marriage myself, but I was annoyed by the CNN article. – – —What bothered me most about CNN’s depiction of the black church is that it is one that wreaks of the kind of liberal paternalism that treats African Americans as if we are savages who need to be educated by white folks. The comparison of gay marriage opposition to slavery is a deliberate effort to poke at the political pressure point of African Americans, reducing our most painful collective experience into a political football. It’s no different from telling a woman that she should protest the labor practices of Wal-Mart because she was once raped by a Wal-Mart employee.

    – — —– – -THIS- – –>While the black church has been under the spotlight for its opposition to gay marriage, I can’t help but notice that this same nasty criticism has not been unleashed onto white Christians. From what I understand, most Christians adhere to the same principles and read from the same bible, and I remain confused as to why African Americans are being singled out in such a way. There seems to be a misguided perception that black voters owe something to the Democrats. While we are welcome to join the Democratic agenda, the black agenda is usually considered to be unworthy of consideration.

President Obama delivered the commencement address at Barnard College, a private women’s liberal arts college in New York City.

President Obama chose to speak at Barnard College to address “America’s next generation of women leaders,” according to a White House statement.

The President spoke about the role of women in society and gave the graduates three points of advice: get involved, never underestimate power of example and lastly to persevere.

The president is also scheduled to speak at Joplin High School’s graduation ceremony in Missouri later this month. Joplin was the sight where a deadly 2011 tornado hit the ground and claimed the lives of over 160 people last year.

Romney donor pulls support, backs Obama, over same-sex marriage

(CNN) – A well-known, openly gay supporter of Mitt Romney in New York has decided to withdraw his support for Romney and back President Barack Obama instead.

The clincher: Romney’s stance on same-sex marriage.

“I feel that I no longer wish to support your presidential campaign and ask that you please return the maximum contribution that I gave to you last year,” Bill White wrote in a letter addressed to the former Massachusetts governor and obtained by CNN.

Who’s running Romney’s campaign??? Spanky and Alfalfa??

Moreover, seeming to concede President Obama’s dominance of national security issues this campaign season, a Romney adviser told the Times that Romney isn’t interested in talking about foreign policy. “Romney doesn’t want to really engage these issues until he is in office,” the adviser said.

Well, they fired the guy that could have at least formed complete sentences about foreign policy- all because he was gay.

I bet they leave him messages, send emails – “please help us with this question” – he laughs. *snicker*

“Romney doesn’t want to really engage these issues until he is in office,” the adviser said.

Imagine your doctor saying: “I don’t really want to engage in talking about the surgery until after it’s over and you’ve paid your medical bill.”

Your kitchen contractor: “I won’t discuss the plans for where your stove is going to go until after we finish the remodeling and you’ve settled up.”

Real estate agent?: “After you’ve signed the settlement papers and the check clears, we will tell you where the house is and how many bedrooms/ bathrooms it has. What? Oh,no. I don’t know if it has a yard. I don’t want to talk about that until after all of these messy, annoying meetings are over with.

  • Thousands of Libyans Struggle With Recovery of Property Confiscated by Qaddafi

TRIPOLI, Libya — Ibrahim Tunali has never forgotten the day in 1981 when government soldiers took over his luggage shop and gave it to a loyalist of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, one of countless expropriations in that era. So after Colonel Qaddafi was killed in October, Mr. Tunali marched to his old shop with a posse of armed relatives, he said, and told the man renting it, “If you’re not gone in two days, we’ll slaughter you right here.”

    The man fled within hours.

Tens of thousands of other Libyans are now tempted to do the same, said Mr. Tunali, a stout 60-year-old with a cheerful, pugnacious manner, as he stood in front of his reclaimed shop. The original owners of expropriated property have not forgotten what they lost, he added, and are growing more impatient every day.

One of Colonel Qaddafi’s most toxic legacies is the vast land-redistribution policy he started in the late 1970s, which now threatens to ignite a patchwork of bitter property disputes in a well-armed population.

  • FBI seeks to charge George Zimmerman with hate crime

    SANFORD, Fla. —

WFTV has learned charges against George Zimmerman could be getting more serious.

State prosecutors said Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, profiled and stalked 17-year-old Trayvon Martin before killing him, so the FBI is now looking into charging him with a hate crime.

Zimmerman admitted to killing Martin in February during a confrontation. However, he claims the shooting was in self-defense. He’s facing a second-degree murder charge, which carries a maximum possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. But if Zimmerman is charged and found guilty of a federal hate crime involving murder, he could face the death penalty.

FBI investigators are actively questioning witnesses in the retreat at the Twin Lakes neighborhood, seeking evidence for a possible federal hate crime charge.

Alright guys, I told ya’ll the details of the position that I was offerred at my PRN job. So now I told my supevisor that I would take this week to think about it and I’d let her know if not by the end of this week, then by next week when I will be back to work at my PRN job and I’ll just so happen to be working with the Supe that weekend.

So I’ve been havent’ a lil palpitations because I really think I need to take this job, but I’m being overcome by emotions because I’ll be leaving some people who I really to like, but this will be a fantastic opportunity (at the very least, I can work for the year, save as much money as I can, and then give myself some breathing room in terms of moving to another state if not going back home to NOLA).

Bascially, I head is made up, but my heart has been erratic. I hate the thought of having to go into the office of my Lab Manager and my Supervisors to turn in the resignation letter. How do you even start the conversation? Should I make an appointment? Do I just go in and just drop the bomb how do I even broach the subject.

I know, I know I”m overthinking it, but ugh!!!

You’re not being silly at all IMO, not at all. Change isn’t easy. But go for what you know.

      Hi, lamh:

If it wasn’t meant for you, it would not have been presented to you. You prayed about this situation and you mentioned your Grandmother… if she was anything like my two Grans, she’s a praying Grandmother. Your prayers were answered.

The co-workers who are friends will find a way to maintain the relationship, if it is important. And if they don’t, well – sometimes people are in your life for a moment, others are there until there is a fork in the road and the rest are there until the journey ends.

It is natural to feel apprehension about the unknown. But, let’s look at facts: you moved from NOLA after one of the worst natural disasters known to man, helped your sister settle, made sure she graduated from high school and went on to college, and made the best of your life in an adopted city. If that doesn’t sound like a woman who can meet a challenge and live life fully on her terms, I don’t know what does.

You’ll be fine. Congratulations on the new job.

Coalition of African-American and civil rights leaders backs Obama on gay marriage

A coalition of African American ministers and civil rights leaders are standing behind President Barack Obama’s decision to back same-sex marriage, seeking to dispel the notion that the black community is sharply divided on the issue.

The coalition — including the Rev. Al Sharpton of the National Action Network; Julian Bond, Chairman Emeritus of NAACP; Melanie Campbell and the Rev.Dr. Joseph Lowery, a civil rights legend and close Obama ally — released an open letter late last week embracing Obama’s position on marriage equality.

Terrific videocast by deaniac re: Romney’s bullying.

I’m so irritated that my work’s browser is too old to be compatible with Disqus 2012, so I can’t comment there, but that site and POU are my mainstays. The video is terrific; deaniac’s a handsome guy!

    Jay-Z still on Team Obama

President Obama recently picked Jay-Z over Kanye, and now his top rapper has returned the favor.

Asked who should win the 2012 presidential election — former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or Obama — Jay-Z told CNN on Monday, “I mean, that’s an easy question. President Obama by leaps and bounds.” While not too familiar with Romney, Jay-Z said the things he’s heard “don’t sound good.”

Applauding the president for endorsing same-sex marriage last week, the rapper said, “I think it’s the right thing to do … whether it costs him votes or not.”

      Thank you Jay Z.

    – – –Obama Winning Among Veterans – —

    – — –After a decade of war, America’s troops aren’t feeling very war-like. President Obama currently leads Mitt Romney among veterans who have served since the Gulf War by seven points—a wider lead than he has among the general populace—according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, and many say it’s because of his stance on defense. One former master sergeant, for instance, says he’s a Ron Paul supporter, but in the general election he’s voting for whoever he thinks is less likely to start “knee-jerk reaction wars,” even if it means voting for “that Democrat.”

Anyone see the Family Guy episode last night where Peter Griffin joined the Tea Party? Maybe I’m easy, but it was pretty funny and some mildly biting humor directed at the tea party crowd.

Paul done looking for votes, but will keep grabbing delegates
    — –

    – – – –Ron Paul’s campaign is over—at least if you define campaign as an attempt to get people to vote for you. Paul’s camp announced today that it would “no longer spend resources campaigning in primaries in states that have not yet voted. Doing so without any hope of success would take many tens of millions of dollars we simply do not have.”

    – —But Paul’s campaign says it’s going to continue to try to win delegates, in an attempt to “carry a strong message to the Republican National Convention.”

    – – — NASCAR’s first Black woman driver gets up to speed

    – – – –As the first, youngest and only African-American woman driving on the NASCAR circuit, Tia Norfleet is opening doors of diversity in a highly controversial and predominately White male-oriented sport.

NASCAR has long been accused of racial discrimination, with multiple lawsuits filed by ethnic minorities accusing the organization of bias. With that, many people wonder why Norfleet wants to compete on the circuit. “It is sheer passion and instinct that drives this youngster to want to compete in this sport, she was born to compete,”says Isaac Hayes, spokesperson/CEO of the online fund raising organization,

Norfleet comes from a family with a long racing history. Her father, Bobby Norfleet, made his NASCAR debut at the Portland International Raceway road course on March 26, 2000, where he competed against NASCAR driver Bill Lester. It was the only time in NASCAR history that two African-Americans drivers have competed at the same time.

    – – —In Commencement Speech Face-Off, Obama The Winner – — –

    – – – —Barack Obama’s commencement address at Barnard College confirms at least one thing: The Democratic president – shockingly – has locked up the vote among students at a women’s liberal arts school in New York City.

Barnard students on Monday transformed their graduation ceremony into a campaign rally for the sitting president, showering Obama’s speech with applause and cheers while he touted his administration’s female-friendly accomplishments. It was almost surprising they didn’t start chanting the president’s signature slogan, “Yes we can!” when he walked away from the podium.

    – – -That Obama was well-received at the liberal-friendly school, of course, was expected, particularly after embracing same-sex marriage last week. But his reception nonetheless represents a telling contrast from the one his opponent, Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney, received Saturday when he delivered the commencement address at the evangelical Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. Both schools are representative of each man’s political base – for Obama, college-educated women and youths, for Romney, socially conservative Christians.

    – –THIS – –>But while Obama’s reaction was enthusiastic, Romney’s reception felt polite. The president’s speech rallied supporters already dedicated to his cause; Romney simply tendered a peace treaty to men and women who view him warily. Some students at Liberty, after all, were worried the GOP’s putative nominee would be booed.

    – – –Autopsy Shows African-American Teen Kendrec McDade Was Shot Seven Times By Police– – —

    – —-Last March, police received a report that a taco truck in Pasadena, California had just been robbed. According to a recently released autopsy report, the two officers who arrived to investigate this report ran down and eventually shot a young black suspect seven times:

Nineteen-year-old Kendrec McDade was shot at point-blank range by one Pasadena police officer and handcuffed after being struck by a total of seven bullets, according to the autopsy report released Friday by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. . . . Three of the wounds — two in his abdomen and one in his right arm — are considered potentially fatal because they lacerated arteries, according to Pasadena police. One bullet entered through the back of the right arm and another the back of the right forearm.

McDade, of Azusa, was killed when Pasadena officers Jeff Newlen and Mathew Griffin responded to a report of an armed robbery at a taco truck in northwest Pasadena. One of the officers pursued him on foot and the other from his police cruiser.

    – – -SKIP – – –

    – —McDade also does not fit the profile of the kind of person who would normally commit armed robbery. He has no gang ties or prior arrests, was a star football player in high school, and was a student at Citrus College at the time of his death.
