Monday Afternoon Thread: RIP Sugarfoot

Anyone remember the infamous Ohio Players album covers? A naked woman covered in honey…yeah…that was The Ohio Players! Well, we lost Leroy “Sugarfoot” Bonner, lead of the group, but the music will never die. So today’s thread is ALL OHIO PLAYERS! FUNK ON!

  • MsKitty

Huge part of my childhood. RIP Sugarfoot, thanks for all the amazing music.

  • If you ask me, I think Fox News fired Palin because, frankly, she hasn’t aged well in the past 4 years.

    • MsKitty

      Botox is not her friend.

    • Miranda

yeah, she’s starting to look just like Eunice from Mama’s Family.

    • JojoRaze

She looks dessicated. I don’t know why she decided to lose weight when her looks were the only thing she had going for her. She should’ve read a book instead of lost weight. She lost whatever muscle tone she had and looks like she was on cheap diet drugs.

      • nellcote

    5. Oh, and BTW, he now works for one of the biggest slumlords and movers of gentrification in Harlem – Columbia. Kind of hard to scream power to the people when your boss is kicking people out of their homes so some hipster grad students can have another 30 Starbucks and Urban Outfitters.

Cornpone teaches at Union Theological Seminary which, according to Wikipedia, is affiliated with Columbia University http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Theological_Seminary_%28New_York%29#Notable_current_faculty

But guess who is a visiting professor at Columbia? Our favorite Ivory Tower Crew member, Prof. Eddie S. Glaude, Jr.: http://religion.columbia.edu/people/Eddie%20S.%20Glaude%2C%20Jr.

Islamists burn ancient manuscripts in Mali’s Timbuktu

Islamist extremists torched a library containing historic manuscripts in Timbuktu, the mayor said today, as French and Malian forces closed in on Mali’s fabled desert city.

By Carley Petesch and Krista Larson, Associated Press / January 28, 2013

Fleeing Islamist extremists torched a library containing historic manuscripts in Timbuktu, the mayor said Monday, as French and Malian forces closed in on Mali’s fabled desert city.

Ousmane Halle said he heard about the burnings early Monday.

“It’s truly alarming that this has happened,” he told The Associated Press by telephone from Mali’s capital, Bamako, on Monday. “They torched all the important ancient manuscripts. The ancient books of geography and science. It is the history of Timbuktu, of its people.”

…A spokesman for the Al Qaeda-linked militants has said that the ancient tombs of Sufi saints were destroyed because they contravened Islam, encouraging Muslims to venerate saints instead of God.

Among the tombs they destroyed is that of Sidi Mahmoudou, a saint who died in 955, according to the UNESCO website.

Timbuktu, long a hub of Islamic learning, is also home to some 20,000 manuscripts, some dating back as far as the 12th century. Owners have succeeded in removing some of the manuscripts from Timbuktu to save them, while others have been carefully hidden away from the Islamists.

Same kind of activity went on in Afghanistan: bombing ancient carvings and monuments. These purists and ideologues need terror to scare people to come to their perverse perspective.

    – —Senate group reaches immigration deal– —

    — —A powerful group of senators from both parties has reached a deal on the outlines of a comprehensive immigration overhaul, a development that will drive an emotional debate on a hot-button issue unseen in Washington for more than half a decade.

The group is expected to unveil the basics of its proposal at a Monday news conference on Capitol Hill, essentially laying down a marker on the issue one day before President Barack Obama heads to Las Vegas to unveil more details about his own immigration proposal.

    – —According to a five-page document provided to POLITICO, the sweeping proposal — agreed to in principle by eight senators — would seek to overhaul the legal immigration system as well as create a pathway to citizenship for the nation’s roughly 11 million illegal immigrants. But establishing that pathway would depend on whether the U.S. first implements stricter border enforcement measures and new rules ensuring immigrants have left the country in compliance with their visas. Young people brought to the country as children illegally and seasonal agriculture industry workers would be given a faster path to citizenship.

The broad agreement by the influential Gang of Eight senators amounts to the most serious bipartisan effort to act on the highly charged issue since George W. Bush’s comprehensive measure was defeated in the Senate in 2007.

    – — –It remains to be seen if Obama will embrace the Senate effort, or how closely his own proposal hews to the Senate one. But the Senate proposal is expected to take precedence on Capitol Hill, given that bipartisan backing will be crucial to getting anything through the Democratic-controlled Senate — let alone the Republican-controlled House.– – –

Can I just say that the Cycle is a horrible show on MSNBC and needs to be cancelled. Steve Kornacki and his crew were talking about Chained CPI and raising the medicare eligibility age (which by they way was rejected by the white house) and acting like Obama might go along with it. The thing about the PL is that I can’t stand the lies and half truths because the Chained CPI was going to be designed in a way that it would not have a negative effective on the majority of Americans. This idea is also supported by liberal think tanks as a compromise only if it is designed in a good way.

Right after that segment they went on to talk about drones. Another way to attack the president.

    • Ebogan63

No one gives a googly fuck about drones, chained CPI was a negotiating tactic, Pelosi even said so. Why the ‘left’ stay losing.

      • jziglar

Exactly ! I really believe the administration used it as a negotiating tactic because they knew the proposal had no shot of passing but would make them look like they were trying to be reasonable.

You can tell that they have been playing games with the GOP and with Jack Lew going to Treasury you can tell that they are positioned to fight.

      • creolechild

“No one gives a googly fuck about drones….” You certainly have a way with words Ebogan. (:

      • isonprize

Drones or more US soldiers killed?

        Pretty simple answer for me.

    • nellcote

Did you catch SE Cupp referencing Greenwald with the drones? A person just can’t find the remote fast enough when that show comes on.

      • Ebogan63

The GOP always counts on the PL and whinny ‘leftists’ to undercut Dems with they bullshit, and they always oblige.

    Learning from experience
    By Steve Benen
    Mon Jan 28, 2013 4:41 PM EST.

Since President Obama won re-election, congressional Republicans have, at various times, complained about his cabinet choices, his policy agenda, his negotiating stances, and his inaugural address.

And as it turns out, his West Wing staffing choices aren’t exactly drawing GOP praise, either.

President Barack Obama’s most recent nominations and appointments show that he is assembling a muscular senior team of trusted allies to carry out his second-term plans, without concern for Republican sensitivities, some GOP officials say.

With his second-term appointments largely complete, the president has built a cadre of officials and aides that some say is more for combat than consensus — to execute policies rooted in the Democratic ideals laid out in his inaugural speech last week.

By contrast, midway through his first term the president named William Daley as his chief of staff, choosing someone with ties to the corporate world in an overture to Republicans and business leaders.

    • nellcote

Why on earth should PBO give a fuck what goopers think about his advisors?

    • conlakappa

Their sensitivities? So it’s about their feelings? They expected the President to demonstrate… hmmm, now what was that term they found particularly odious when he used it a couple of years back… empathy? Grow up, weepy GOPers.

What’s Up With Barack and Hillary?

    by BooMan
Mon Jan 28th, 2013 at 04:02:35 PM EST

President Obama not only took the highly unusual and totally unprecedented step of appearing on 60 Minutes with his out-going Secretary of State, but he also instructed some of his best fundraisers to find the money to pay off Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign debt. That’s quite a one-two punch, or gift, or something. He has certainly repaid Clinton’s loyalty, and that of her husband who was so helpful on the campaign trail last year. I don’t see it as an endorsement of a Clinton comeback in 2016. I think it has more to do with solidifying his own legacy. If Clinton is going to run for president in 2016, Obama doesn’t want her running against him and his record. He wants a united front. And I don’t think he wants to sabotage the ambitions of his fun-loving vice-president, either.

What do you think Obama is up to?

    • creolechild

Is it a slow news day? From what I’ve read, PBO was not involved with Hillary’s debt being paid off. And if it turns out that he was…SO WHAT? Why do people always assume there’s an ulterior motive lurking in the background when someone shows any level of decency to another human being? Also. Too. Hillary and any other presidential candidate in the forseeable future will be unable to touch the legacy that PBO leaves behind–which renders the author’s “theories” irrelevant and speculative at best. (Rikyrah, my comments are not directed at you but this form of navel-gazing works on my last nerve.)

Obama Donors Help Clinton Pay Off 2008 Campaign Debt

“Clinton’s debt once totaled more than $20 million, although it had dwindled to about $250,000 by last year. That’s when a team of top Obama donors decided to surprise Clinton, and thank her for her loyal service, by raising enough money to pay off her bills. As secretary of state, she was forbidden from political fundraising.”

      • conlakappa

I received multiple pleas in the past couple of weeks to help retire HRC’s campaign debt. Not a one of them was via an OFA vehicle, all from the DNC and from female candidates to whom I’ve given in the past and EMILY’s list, to which I haven’t given a dime but I’m guessing those female candidates gave them my name. I think someone’s being cute here for no good reason, as you note. Mind you, Candidate Obama sent out notes in 2008 asking for people to help retire her debt so it is so not even a big deal but a continued demonstration of his character.

    • nellcote

Maybe he’s trying to get the PUMAs to shut the hell up for half a minute.

      • Miranda

Nice try but it won’t work…they simply will not shut the hell up for even the one minute.

    • Camille

I’m actually quite sick and tired of these analyses.

Maybe it’s simply because I don’t give a rats arse about the Clintons and their plans.

It always has to be about them. If the world isn’t revolving about them, everyone else is kept miserable and things undermined, until it does.

    Moving the overton window

    By Kay January 28th, 2013

We all joked and laughed at the armed compound the Tea Party are trying to get going, but here’s some Serious Thinkers on the Right and they have a plan for a model city-state.

    Detroit, Michigan:

a developer is stepping forward with a revolutionary idea: Sell the city’s Belle Isle park for $1 billion to private investors who will transform it into a free-market utopia. The 982-acre island would then be developed into a U.S. commonwealth or city-state of 35,000 people with its own laws, customs and currency.
City officials are likely to reject the plan. But on Jan. 21, supporters including Mackinac Center for Public Policy senior economist David Littmann, retired Chrysler President Hal Sperlich and Clark Durant, co-founder of Detroit’s Cornerstone Schools, will present the Commonwealth of Belle Isle plan to a select group of movers and shakers at the tony Detroit Athletic Club. The idea won’t go anywhere, said George Jackson, president and CEO of the Detroit Economic Growth Corp., the quasi-public agency that promotes development for the city.

Here’s the scenario for the Commonwealth of Belle Isle that Lockwood and others want to see: Private investors buy the island from a near-bankrupt Detroit for $1 billion. It then would secede from Michigan to become a semi-independent commonwealth like Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands. Under the plan, it would become an economic and social laboratory where government is limited in scope and taxation is far different than the current U.S. system. There is no personal or corporate income tax. Much of the tax base would be provided by a different property tax — one based on the value of the land and not the value of the property.
It would take $300,000 to become a “Belle Islander,” though 20 percent of citizenships would be open for striving immigrants, starving artists and up-and-coming entrepreneurs who don’t meet the financial requirement..

The media is so annoying. I don’t care what anyone says but I don’t want to see Clinton running again and I’m tired if this “inevitability” crap from the media and some Democrats. Bill Clinton was a mediocre president who couldn’t fulfill his promises and left the Democratic party in a bad state. I don’t know why anyone would want go through that again.

    • Aquagranny911

But let them flap their toothless gums. It keeps them occupied & out of the important stuff. We will ignore the caca & keep up with supporting our Prez & getting more good Dem butts in the seats come 2014.

You know, the more these folks do this, the more I believe that it will be someone else. I mean, lets remember the Clinton/Giuliani 2008 race the media was feeding us. The more they do this, the more they ensure that it might not be Clinton. I just say watch out for Governor O’ Malley or Vice President Biden, Hill.

    • trose1

Hillary Clinton lost in 2008. If she couldn’t beat an unknown like candidate Obama why is she the front runner now? She was a shoe in to win the nomination in 2008. I will not vote for her in the primary.

      • Town

Well, it was The Blacks™ fault. They all banded together and voted for Obama just because he was black*. Didn’t know anything about him except he was blackety blackety black black. But they’ll be no more black guys in 2016 so Hillary is safe.

*Hillary had about 70% of the black vote when the Dem. primary process started, she lost it because of pallin’ around with Bill “Obama need to be bringing me coffee” Clinton, Mark “Minorities need to wait their turn about 50 years or so” Penn and Geraldine “Obama is Just Like Jesse Jackson” Ferraro.

        • rikyrah

why are you speaking truth, TOWN?

        • Camille

And they still all make up her core advisory team. Except of course Geraldine ferraro.

          Nothing’s changed really.

When I watched that tribute to her courtesy of the Saban’s in November, I shook my head at just how disconnected and tone deaf they remain.

Glowing testimonials and tributes from of all people Bibi Netanyahu, John Mccain, Tony Blair, Henry Kissinger–??!

          For crying out loud!

      • Camille

To hear the media tell it, she and Bill were so formidable in 2008, they let someone else win.

And they remain even more formidable now even after that very successful 2008 effort because somehow we’ve been told again and again that they are. None of it has been put to test by the way.

It’s just that simple. We must take theirs and the media’s word for it. We don’t know any better and we must be told what our eyes refuse to see.

Funny too how Bill Clinton coming on board just 3 months before the elections – and only after negotiating sweet deals for himself and his crowd, is now suddenly turned into how supportive he was the whole entire 4 year term.

Any person out there remember anything at all?

        • jziglar

The Clinton’s were never formidable like the media likes to portray. They only have their minions and they try to influence other Democrats and the party as a whole.

Obama and his people in the party are way smarter and more organized than the Clintonites. And that is why Obama beat Hillary.

      • rikyrah

Papa John’s PR Firm Wants Web Scrubbed Of CEO’s ObamaCare
Papa John’s targets journalists, asking that ObamaCare coverage be taken down

I guess Papa John’s is hoping that what is seen can become unseen.

Last week Stabley Times relayed the fact that CNN did an investigative report into claims on the part of Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter that ObamaCare would increase the cost of his pizzas by eleven cents or more. This week a public relations firm representing Papa John’s and Schnatter asked us to unpublish the story. The firm, Sitrick, claims that Schnatter’s now infamous remarks from last fall were taken out of context. It also admits that it’s spent the past several months asking those journalists who’ve reported on the matter to remove their coverage, and brags that ‘in virtually all of these cases, we have been dealing with responsible journalists who have done just that.’ In reference to why Papa John’s would come after a publication like ours for simply relaying something that CNN had reported about the pizza chain, the PR firm claims that it ‘somehow missed the CNN story about which you wrote.’ This despite the fact that CNN first aired the clip in August of last year, and has since become the most often cited proof that Schnatter’s claims of increased costs were dishonest…Your text to link…

So, let me get this straight. We’re supposed to spend MORE money for border enforcement while cutting spending for education and shutting downs schools. Where did all of the hoopla about the deficit disappear to? What about the histrionics over the “supposedly” astronomical amount of national debt that we’re leaving for future generations to deal with? (chirp, chirp, chirp..)

The U.S. Border Is More Secure Than Ever Before

[….] And while security can be enhanced, the U.S. has more resources deployed than ever before and illegal border crossings have dropped dramatically:

    – Billions spent on enforcement: The U.S. spent $18 billion on immigration enforcement in the 2012 fiscal year, which is more than every other federal law enforcement agency combined.

    – Border crossings are at 40-year low: At the same time, illegal border crossings have dropped to their lowest level since the Nixon administration, and net undocumented migration is at or below zero. Meanwhile, annual deportations at a historic high.

    – Most parts of the border are already secure: Even with fewer people apprehended at the border, border agents now patrol every single mile of the border every day. The vast majority of the border already meets one of Homeland Security’s highest standards of security, and there are 21,370 agents, along with six unmanned aircraft systems.[….]

[….] In an interview with the Washington Post, Harkin was asked whether US Senate was “not as fun for him as it used to be.” No, it’s not, Harkin offered, and he pointed to, of all things, the spiraling cost of elections as a major reason why:

It’s not as much fun in that we’re so consumed with other things. Here’s what I mean: we used to have a Senate Dining Room that was only for senators. We’d go down there and sit around there, and Joe Biden and Fritz Hollings and Dale Bumpers and Ted Stevens and Strom Thurmond and a bunch of us—Democrats and Republicans. We’d have lunch and joke and tell stories, a great camaraderie. That dining room doesn’t exist any longer because people quit going there. Why did they quit going? Well, we’re not there on Monday, and we’re not there on Friday. Tuesday we have our party caucuses. That leaves Wednesday and Thursday—and guess what people are doing then? They’re out raising money.[….]

The Obama legacy starts to take shape – Posted on January 24, 2013

By now we are all familiar with this powerful moment that happened after President Obama was re-elected:[see video] The President clearly has faith in the next generation’s ability to carry the torch forward.

[….] Today I came across one pretty important way that’s happening. President Obama’s former field director, Jeremy Bird, is starting an organization called Battleground Texas.[….] The organization, dubbed “Battleground Texas,” plans to engage the state’s rapidly growing Latino population, as well as African-American voters and other Democratic-leaning constituencies that have been underrepresented at the ballot box in recent cycles…Bird said the group would be “a grass-roots organization that will make Texas a battleground state by treating it like one.”

Texas currently has 38 electoral votes – second only to California with 55. And it is on track to have 42 after the 2020 census. In addition, Texas is one of the states that is leading the way on reflecting the demographics of the “new America.” In the 2010 census, white people became the minority at 45% of the population.[….]

  • Tiger Woods wins 75th PGA tour

Not even a sloppy finish could keep Tiger Woods from another win at Torrey Pines.

Woods led by as many as eight shots on the back nine Monday until a painfully slow finish led to some indifferent shots in the final hour of the Farmers Insurance Open.

    No matter.

Woods closed with an even-par 72 for a four-shot victory. He won the tournament for the seventh time, and picked up his record eighth win as a pro at Torrey Pines, which includes the 2008 U.S. Open.

  • Senate votes to approve $50.5 billion Sandy aid package

(Reuters) – The U.S. Senate on Monday approved a $50.5 billion disaster aid package for victims of Superstorm Sandy, three months after the storm destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in coastal New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The 62-36 vote in the Democratic-controlled Senate sends the appropriation measure to President Barack Obama to be signed into law. It narrowly exceeded a 60-vote threshold needed for passage.

The Senate also defeated a Republican amendment that sought to offset the Sandy aid with cuts to discretionary spending spread over the next nine years.

    – — –Black Filmmaker Wins Top Prize At Sundance Film Festival— – –
—-Just one year after Ava DuVernay made history as the first African-American woman to win the Best Director Award at Sundance Film Festival for “Middle of Nowhere”, director Ryan Coogler continued the tradition of Black excellence by nabbing both the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize for his film “Fruitvale.” According to Shadow and Act, only three other films have won both the Audience and Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.

    – – –“Fruitvale” which tales the story of Oscar Grant’s tragic shooting by a transit officer in Oakland California, has received glowing reviews from critics and audiences alike for its emotional authenticity. Earlier this week, Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein purchased “Fruitvale” for $2 million dollars, to be distributed by Weinstein Films. Weinstein has an impeccable record of getting his projects on the awards rosters – two of his current films “Django Unchained” and “Silver Linings Playbook” are up for multiple Academy Award nominations. Expect Coogler and “Fruitvale” star Michael B. Jordan to hit the red carpet at next year’s Oscar Awards.

    Immigration Waterloo

Monday, January 28, 2013 | Posted by Liberal Librarian at 4:25 PM

However, that chauvinism exists, and it is strong in today’s Republican Party. And that chauvinism—even if the reforms make it through Congress—is what might make this process a Republican Waterloo.

One of the Tea Party planks is to “secure the border”. Forget that President Obama has taken more steps to do just that than any previous modern President; to the Teabagger faithful, the southern border with Mexico is an open sewer, spilling out the refuse of the Latin countries into the pristine pastures of America. No amount of factual analysis will convince them that Obama and the Democrats want nothing less than the wholesale remaking of the United States as a culturally “Third World” nation. As TPM notes about any immigration effort in the House:

The House, whose members are more conservative and less threatened by a rising Latino vote than most statewide officials, is considered a much tougher climb for reform advocates.

This is a House caucus dominated by the Tea Party, which has made scapegoating immigrants a major part of its belief system. And, at least in the short term, many of these Tea Party representatives are secure in their seats due to gerrymandering. Republican senators see the writing on the wall, as they have to compete statewide, not in discrete districts; but the base wants nothing other than a militarization of the US-Mexico border, expulsion of undocumented immigrants, and a severe curtailing of legal immigration. They feel that their culture and way of life faces an existential threat. A signature line I see on various comment boards is a variation of “Press 1 for English, Press 2 until you learn to speak English.” (Sometimes I see them lovely substitution of “speak American” in place of “speak English”, which is a wonderful commentary on our education system.) This fear of the Outsider has been a strain in American politics and society since the Republic’s inception; it has become more pronounced and rabid since the election of the country’s first black President, and the obvious and unavoidable logic of the nation’s rapidly changing demographics. Such fear will not be assuaged by pronouncements from a commission of border state governors and attorneys general which will report on efforts to secure the border, whose recommendations will be solely advisory, with no power to affect policy

    • JojoRaze

Personally, I hope the House acts the same way they did during the fiscal cliff-talk a whole lot of crazy before the Kochs, Luntz, and Boehner tell them they are acting a fool and ruining the brand so sit down, shut up and vote like the adults in the Senate tell them. And this times the adults feeding the House reps their bottles will be the Repub farmers in the South and West who were ticked off by the papers please legislation that ran off all their workers and then the Repubs who didn’t take up the Farm Bill, which had crop insurance until the last minute with the fiscal cliff. Folk are tired of the House Repubs.

  • N.J. Senate panel advances bill that would allow early voting
    Christopher Baxter/The Star-Ledger
    on January 28, 2013 at 6:37 PM, updated January 28, 2013 at 7:13 PM

A Senate panel today advanced legislation that would allow voters to cast a ballot as early as 15 days before a primary or general election.

The measure was introduced in response to widespread voter confusion after Hurricane Sandy forced polling locations to close or be relocated.

The bill, approved 3-2 by the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee, would require polling places to open 15 days before an election to allow voting from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Joe Biden gets first dibs at representing Dems in 2016. He has earned it if he wants it.

The way this is playing out right now is extremely dismissive and disrespectful of this man who has been a very loyal and exemplary Vice President.

It is obvious that Joe Biden wants to run and is perfectly capable too – And this flinging around his age as an impediment – and to be used to dampen support and to shut him down prematurely, is just plain evil.

    • Tafr

Now if we start talking about Hillary’s age the Pumas would be calling folks sexist and mean. Naw the Hillary crowd can sit all the way down with their double standards.

      • jziglar

I know ! Hillary will be 69-70 if she decides to run for president so she will only be a few years younger than Biden. Also Joe has been in very good shape while Hillary has been dealing with some health issues. I’m tired of the bias towards the Clinton’s when they are not that remarkable of a political family.

Joe Biden has been a great VP and a loyal Democrat and he should have the first shot at running.

        • Camille

Can you imagine if the tables were turned and Hillary was V.P and people were talking over her head like this, pushing Joe Biden as inevitable and the right person to be next in line.

The fury and rage that would engulf the airwaves.

    • isonprize

Yeah, Joey has had some health issues. Like Krispy Kreme Christie is in great shape? LOLOLOLOL Dick Cheney had heart trouble throughout his Vice presidency (of course, it’s hard to believe that he had a heart in the first place.)

Anybody who paid a tap of attention to Ronald Reagan HAD to know that he was senile in his last years of his presidency. Now Shrub? Shrub, though dumb as a box of rocks, was in remarkably good physical shape. (Remember how fast he ducked those shoes that were thrown at him?) I was duly impressed.

Anyway, if Joey decides to run, he’ll be fine. I think Dr. Jill will make sure of that. Did y’all see Joey running, damn near sprinting, in the Inaugural parade?

In a bid to marginalize Michelle and Barack Obama, because you know, heaven forbid the most influential of power couples be of any other color but the acceptable one; the media and the pundits made it their job to audition and to force-feed the public every random person that reared their head. Anyone but the Obamas.

One minute it was Sarah Palin that was not to be underestimated, then came Michelle Bachmann, then inevitable Perry, shoo-in Huckabee, “reasonable” Huntsman and his over-botoxed wife, Newt the “intellectual” and his adultery partner turned catholic choir girl, then there was aristocrat Mitt and Ann who would finally bring back “class” to the White House, and of course good old lovable, he’s so cute and commands such respect when he’s so obnoxious Christie.

When all fell far too short, the folks who drive the narrative all went right back to the familiar default couple who live for the spotlight and adulation even when it is so painfully obvious that it is only being done to spite and diminish the power couple currently occupying the White House.

In all my life, I have never seen a person who nods in agreement and with such glee as SHE is praised.

—- —- Per most NBA games, a fan was pulled out the crowd to take a shot between periods of the Miami Heat’s home game against the Detroit Pistons. In this instance, it was part of a contest sponsored by LeBron James’ foundation.

What happened next is hard to believe.
—- – Fifty-year-old computer technician Michael Drysch from McHenry, Ill., grabbed the ball, cocked back and put in a hook shot from halfcourt to win $75,000. The shot had barely set in before James jumped the fan and celebrated with him on the court of AmericanAirlines Arena.

“Nice way to meet somebody,” Drysch said. “I can’t believe it.”

“When he wound up I was like, ‘Oh no, there’s no way,'” James said. “When it dropped, that was awesome. I would have probably air-balled that one in that situation.”

    – – -SNIP – – —
“I heard the eruption, and I turned and I saw LeBron absolutely tackle him,” Spoelstra said.

“I had no idea what was going on. That fan, while he’ll love the $75,000, having that on video — LeBron James tackling you at half court in front of 20,000 — I think will be the longer-lasting memory.” –LOL

Hillary Clinton as President: Better for Blacks?

It might have been easier to press her for change than it has been with Obama, say some observers

The same day that President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made headlines for their first joint interview, on 60 Minutes, NAACP President Ben Jealous delighted conservatives with his headline-making interview on another Sunday news program. Appearing on Meet the Press, Jealous said, “Right now when you look at joblessness in this country — the country is pretty much back to where it was when this president started. White people are doing a bit better. Black folks are doing a full point worse.”

Also on Meet the Press, onetime vice presidential candidate, and current member of the House, Paul Ryan offered this theory regarding the current economic battles facing our country: “Look, if we had a [Hillary] Clinton presidency, if we had Erskine Bowles as chief of staff of the White House or president of the United States, I think we would have fixed this fiscal mess by now,” Ryan said. “[But] that’s not the kind of presidency we’re dealing with right now.”

Both pronouncements raise questions that have been pondered by some political watchers since the conclusion of the 2008 presidential election: Would African Americans have fared better under a Hillary Clinton presidency than under Obama (and will they if she runs and wins in 2016)?

Does President Obama Get a Pass?

Jealous’ remarks illustrate a reality that has disappointed some African Americans, who were hopeful that a black presidency would lead to an improvement in conditions for black America. However, addressing that disappointment has been tricky, particularly for black lawmakers.

In a previous interview with The Root, the former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), said, “Well, I’m supposed to say he doesn’t get a pass, but I’m not going to say that. Look, as the chair of the Black Caucus, I’ve got to tell you, we are always hesitant to criticize the president. With 14 percent [black] unemployment [pdf], if we had a white president, we’d be marching around the White House.”

    • jziglar

She’s got the chickenpox and remains hospitalized more than a week after going in after falling and hitting her head at a pre-inaugural party in Washington on Jan. 19, Whoopi Goldberg revealed this morning on The View. “She’s been told to rest. She’s not allowed any visitors,” Goldberg said. “And we’re telling you, Barbara, no scratching!”

Goldberg said Walters, who is 83, has been transferred to a New York hospital and hopes to go home soon. Even after concern about her fall had subsided, Walters had been kept hospitalized last week because of a lingering fever, and doctors found the unexpected cause. It turned out to be the pox, which can be serious in older people because of the possibility of complications like pneumonia. “We love you, we miss you,” Goldberg said. “We just don’t want to hug you.”

The unmarked grave that is believed to belong to Dr. Samuel A. Elbert, a physician who faced racial barriers attaining his medical degree at the Medical College of Indiana, will finally be turned into a headstone at the Crown Hill Cemetery.

The Indianapolis Historical Society along with the Aesculapian Medical Society have been working together to push the installment of the marker recognizing Elbert’s achievements as one of the first black medical pioneers. – —

According to the Indianapolis Star, Elbert challenged the the Medical College of Indiana in 1871, after they refused to recognize him as a student or grant him a medical degree despite paying tuition and attending classes. He eventually won the case, making him the first licensed African-American physician in Indiana.

    – – – –Hispanic group to GOP congressmen: Watch your language

    – —– –One top GOP Hispanic group has a message for Republicans as Congress begins debate on immigration: Watch your language.

The Hispanic Leadership Network, a center-right group looking to woo Latinos to the GOP, sent Republican congressmen of all stripes a list of suggested “Dos and Don’ts of Immigration Reform” Monday afternoon. The memo was obtained by The Hill.

“Tone and rhetoric will be key in the days and weeks ahead as both liberals and conservatives lay out their perspectives. Please consider these tonally sensitive messaging points as you discuss immigration, regardless of your position,” Hispanic Leadership Network Executive Director Jennifer Korn writes.
    – – – -SNIP – —
The memo suggests that Republican senators and congressmen refer to “undocumented immigrant[s]” rather than “illegals” or “aliens” and to never use the phrase “anchor babies.” It also warns Republicans against using the term “amnesty” to describe the plan. It also suggests attacking President Obama for not pushing earlier for a plan.

    Here’s the full list:

Awesome, this cracks me up. GOP congressmen have to be told what to say and, more importantly, what not to say. Like schoolchildren.
If THAT doesn’t illuminate their rank-amateurism, I don’t know what does.
