      Damn!

    • Alma98

      WHOA!

    • MsKitty

That’s the Inlet area and they usually take on water first. But what’s scary is most of the city is now underwater, even parts that aren’t that prone to flooding. I saw a picture on twitter a little while ago of an AC neighborhood that I lived in years ago, and the houses were already half submerged. I can’t even imagine what those people are gonna come back to. When all this is over I may go down there to see how my old house made out.

  • edp4bho

Being bombarded with rethug ads here in Pennsy. They take advantage of your discomfort during coverage of the hurricane. Listening to Rev Al show, a caller says rethugs are heartless. He’s a long-distance truck driver, was asked to tow a load along the eastern seaboard and he refused, citing the danger of impending storm. His directive then was to drive to Chicago, which he did, but once there, he received a call from his boss, terminating him- for looking out for his own safety. These are vile creatures, and they must be annihilated come next Tuesday.

    • Alma98

      WTF! That’s just low-down edp4bho just low-down.

    • nellcote

I’m guessing the truck driver isn’t in a union.

      • edp4bho

He didn’t say, but you can bet if it were me, that owner would be paying through the nose.

        • nellcote

A union wouldn’t let an employer get away with that crap. The Teamsters don’t play.

    • Alma98

My mom is getting calls from Cross Roads, they’re getting desperate.

    • MsKitty

Same here. Did you see the one with the suburban mom jogging with her baby? She says that she runs to get away from her problems and the heartbreak of PBO letting her down, because he’s not the man she thought he was.

Of course because I have too much time on my hands holed up in the house, I started thinking that a lot of commercials with that theme seem to be popular across the country. It’s like the context of those ads are, “Okay white ladies you’ve had your little taste of jungle fever, but it’s okay to come back to the white mens where you belong. We forgive you.”

Like I said, too much time on my hands.

      • Alma98

You’re not the only one thinking this MsKitty my husband said the same thing.

      • edp4bho

That’s the last I saw, and quickly–again–turned the channel. Sickening. Love the suggestive theme- I bet you’re right. Oh, the devil is tricky with seduction.

      • GOVCHRIS1988

Seriously, they are trying the old, “Mandingo left me” shit. Oh, I KNOW we got this shit now. WOW!!!

Here’s an example of how condescending and out-of-touch the Ivory Tower Crew is. Here’s what Prof. Frederick Harris has to say about PBO’s accomplishments:

“INSTEAD of urging Mr. Obama to be more outspoken on black issues, black elites parrot campaign talking points. They dutifully praise important but minor accomplishments — the settlement of a longstanding class-action lawsuit by black farmers; increased funds for black colleges; the reduction (but not elimination) of the disparities in sentences for possession of crack and powder cocaine — while setting aside their critical acumen.”

    MORE: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/28/opinion/sunday/the-price-of-a-black-president.html

Mr. Harris, who is a professor at majority white Columbia University, thinks helping Black farmers, funding HBCUs and rectifying unjust laws which disproportionately affect lower income Blacks is MINOR.

Stuff like this shows that the ITC are projecting when they claim PBO doesn’t care about Black people.

BTW, when Prof. Harris wrote a similar anti-PBO piece back in June, POU contacted him and asked if he would like to discuss his article on our blog. While he spent 21 minutes looking over our site, he couldn’t take one minute to respond to our request.

        • conlakappa

As did the Wash Post. All a coincidence, I am sure. But I told you all about the Times article having proximity to an article about black men in prison. Coincidence agogo.

Video Surfaces Of Romney Defending Birth Certificate Discrimination Against Same-Sex Couples

Last week, news surfaced that as governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney refused to issue birth certificate forms inclusive of same-sex couples after marriage equality became law. House GOP Voted To Cut Disaster Relief In Order To Preserve Military Spending

As part of their bill to void the military spending cuts included in the Budget Control Act — which was passed as a result of 2011′s GOP inspired debt ceiling standoff — House Republicans proposed eliminating a program that helps states and localities respond to disasters like hurricanes.

The House Republicans’ Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012, which was passed without a single Democratic vote, called for zeroing out funding for the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG), a program that provides funding to state and local governments to aid needy children, adults, and the disabled. As the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities noted, the SSBG also offers assistance for disaster relief:[....]

Death Penalty Repeal Picking Up Steam In California

A new USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times Poll finds support building for a California ballot initiative that would repeal the death penalty and replace it with life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in that state. Although opponents of the ballot initiative retain a 45-42 edge in the poll, this is a significant shift from September, when 51 percent supported retaining state-sponsored executions and only 38 percent would vote to repeal them.[....]

Regardless of whether California voters repeal the death penalty this year, the nation as a whole is trending away from it. Though death sentences remain legal in most states, actual executions are very rare in most of the country.[....]

About an hour ago, Gov. Christie held a press conference about the hurricane and said that the mayor of Atlantic City, Lorenzo Langford told his residents not to evacuate, and proceeded to call him out for not being a good leader. However, the mayor was on Rev. Al’s show tonight and said that he sent out the word to evacuate LAST FRIDAY. AC press has also backed up Langford.

I heard that there was beef between these two, but this is not the time for this kind of bs from Christie.

I can’t stand this woman.Ann Romney: We Need To ‘Throw Out’ The Public Education SystemAnn Romney told Good Housekeeping magazine that the campaign issue closest to her heart is taking on teachers unions and dismantling public education as we know it. In an interview, she told the publication:

I’ve been a First Lady of the State. I have seen what happens to people’s lives if they don’t get a proper education. And we know the answers to that. The charter schools have provided the answers. The teachers’ unions are preventing those things from happening, from bringing real change to our educational system. Poll: Obama, Romney are in dead heat in N.C.
    October 29, 2012
    News and Observer

Just over a week before Election Day, a new Elon University poll shows a dead heat between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney in North Carolina.

The poll shows each candidate with the support of 45 percent of likely voters. Five percent are undecided. The poll is the second in a week to show a tie in North Carolina. . . .

But Obama campaign officials wasted little time in touting the Elon results.

“An Elon Poll just came out showing the race tied,” Obama campaign manager Jim Messina told reporters on a conference call. “I am ridiculously proud of what the North Carolina staff has put on the ground with our volunteers.”

    from 2011 (Hurricane Irene)

Obama administration held training exercise for NYC hurricane

“In May 2009, the Obama administration conducted a simulation exercise around the possibility of a Category 3 hurricane hitting New York City, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters Friday.

The National Level Exercise, as it is known, was part of a coordinated effort by federal officials to prepare for a variety of disaster scenarios, including one very similar to what is likely to take place this weekend. President Obama himself participated in the exercise, one of the first of its kind by the new administration.

“The federal government’s preparation for this storm didn’t just begin as the clouds started to gather and form a tropical depression,” Earnest told reporters traveling with President Obama to Martha’s Vineyard.

“The federal government and this administration in particular is constantly exercising and preparing and testing and evaluating our readiness for situations like this,” he said.”

I recall this. PBO’s FEMA director Fugate has done a great job. He actually had experience in FL as the Emergency Manager director and ever since PBO has been in office, you can see the increased coordination in the states wrt to emergency disasters.

Even Gov Christie is on Twitter saying PBO told him to call immediately and directly to him if he needs anything. He said for now he doesn’t need anything but will call if/when he does. PBO did this last year during Irene too. He let those Repubs say on video that they got everything they need and PBO was like “You call me direct if you need anything, now, you hear??”

I just had to post this portion of the transcript from today’s podcast of NPR’s Tell Me More. Janice Crouse is with the conservative Concerned Women for America___________________________Do you think that these racial dynamics have been evoked by the campaign or are they just kind of part of the overall environment in the United States? And Janice, I’ll ask you this question first. What do you think?

CROUSE: I think this has been the most racially divisive president in my memory. I have been just astounded at the times when President Obama has adopted ebonics, for instance, when he has deliberately chosen to use racially inflammatory language.

MARTIN: Give an example. Give an example, if you would.

CROUSE: Well, Mr. Biden, for instance, when he was at a Virginia meeting talked about people going back in chains. When the president talks to a Southern audience he adopts a Southern accent. It’s just – I think what you’re seeing is a reflection of that because in the 2008 election only 48 percent of people expressed negative racial attitudes toward blacks and now it’s up to 51 percent.

MARTIN: Wait, wait. You don’t think George W. Bush did that when he spoke to a Southern audience? When he was back home in Texas you don’t think you heard a little bit more of the Texas accent in his delivery?

CROUSE: That might have been the case but that’s very different when a white man does that, speaking Southern. I’m from the South and I tend to speak more Southern when I’m there because I pick it up. You know, it’s part of my DNA and it does come out then. And I think that’s true of…

MARTIN: So it’s different when a white person does that?

CROUSE: But it’s different when a black person adopts that speaking to a predominantly black audience when he doesn’t normally. That seems to me very affecting and I think that is part of the reason that we’ve seen such a change in racial attitudes and, when you cite examples of specific racism for black from whites in this country, that, of course, is lamentable. It’s horrible and I don’t approve of it one iota.full transcript: http://www.npr.org/2012/10/29/163872354/hurricane-sandy-unwelcome-guest-for-elections

White supremacists have so normalized their racism that they literally see nothing wrong with a double standard. Ignorant, bigoted asshole.

      • jds09

        I’m done with NPR.

        • Ebogan63

I have not listened to NPR since the ’80s and I don’t miss it in the least.

    • Alma98

Well ain’t this a racist bitch! I tell you I’m holding on by a thread with these backward ass people.

    • Ebogan63

Your fucking hood is on too tight Crouse!!! I would like to slap the fucking taste out her mouth.

    • GOVCHRIS1988

      Um hmm.

Damn, I’m a dude and I just did that like Tina Turner at the end of Whats Love Got To Do With It.

    • JojoRaze

I read the rest of the transcript convo and it explains why I haven’t listened to much NPR or Tell Me More in this election season. They try to be such “both sides do it” that they let Romney and the white right get away with murder. The last show I listened to was last Tuesday where Michele had the black, hispanic and white women discussing breast cancer. That was a great, enlightening show. The politics, not so much.

Cynthia Tucker calls out this lady’s bs by saying that what she says is false and Michele Martin goes “both sides do it” by saying that white people were offended when PBO spoke about Skip Gates and Trayvon.

PBO only talks about race when ASKED!!! The white media asked him about Henry Louis Gates and he answered. He was asked about Trayvon and he answered. Just because he doesn’t pass on the question, or the fact it makes white people uncomfortable when PBO answers a question the white media ASKED him, is not PBO’s fault. That’s racist white people who think PBO has to shuck and jive for them.

      • Miranda

ITA – Michele grated my nerves with that bs on Skip Gates and Trayvon. That pacifying for white angst was not necessary.

        • jds09

Saying if he had a son he would look like Trayvon is race baiting?!? PBO isn’t allowed to refer to himself?! PBO is required to forget, not refer to, or acknowledge his blackness? He is held to an impossible standard. Fuck Michele. Seriously, fuck her.

          • JojoRaze

PBO is basically suppose to see himself as a “special negro” and not acknowledge racism at all in America, even in saying it was stupid for a cop to arrest a man outside his own home or mention that if he had a son, he’d look like Trayvon. Acknowledging his similarity to the rest of us makes him seem ungrateful to white people, even though he didn’t win the overall white vote.

      • jziglar

Racist whites can’t handle the truth. They are one of the primary reasons why this country has issues.

        • BoomerGal

          Amen to that!

      • qosine

No kidding. I quit listening to NPR, when I realized they were always interviewing those John Bircher/Koch libertarian economists from George Mason. Their stories treat people like anthropological specimens.

    • jziglar

LMAO ! what does an accent have to do with racial divisions ??? So it’s okay for white people to do it but a non white person does it then it’s racist ?

No the reason is that a good amount of white people in this country can’t look in the mirror and see that there white privilege is the problem.

    • qosine

You know, the media’s always giving these creeps a platform. “Concerned women” about what?

      • Aquagranny911

“Concerned” about her white ass, racist goatfigger!

    Afternoon, POU Fam!

I went to vote today. A little background for the lurkers and folks that may be new to the site: it has been my absolute privilege to cast votes for Barack H. Obama as IL State Senator, U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator and twice for President of the United States. As I stated last week, I lived in Hyde Park approximately six blocks from POTUS and FLOTUS until I bought a home in 2010.

The polling places in Chicago are open M-S 9:00 – 5:00. Three Chicago locations were open this past Sunday.

The polling place I selected is not too far from my home, at a Chicago Public Library. I arrived at 4:40, thinking that the rush was over. WRONG! It would take me two hours to vote.

There were more than 100 people waiting to vote. And since Chicago’s ballot is lengthy, with a state constitutional amendment question, three referenda and seventy-eleventy pages of judge retention candidates, it was going to take a moment. At 5:00, there were still more than 100 people in line. It didn’t matter.

What mattered is a library full of children, doing homework, on the computer, or reading, watching as more than 100 people, young and old, were patiently and resolutely determined to vote. Silently, steadfastly – we shall not moved. The library closed and one young child said with wonder: “you all are still trying to vote?”

The right to vote became more than just a phrase to these children. I would like to think that 10 or 12 years from now, when these same children grow up and are eligible to vote, that they will remember this day and the more than 100 people who patiently, steadfastly and with determination, exercised the right to vote.

    • Miranda

Hi sag! I also left work a little early to go and vote, didn’t take me long at all. I was told the rush is always in the morning and I was at one of the largest facilities…but the poll workers say they are outpacing 2008!

      • sagittarius

I read somewhere that more that 250,000 AAs have voted in Georgia – y’all just DO the damn thing, why dontcha!

    • goldenstar

The early voting throughout Cook County has been heavy; very heavy. I attended a training for Equipment Manager judges on Thursday and the Cook County Clerk training instructors said that they were all embarrassed because the Early Vote judges were so messing up. So, the pressure was on for us newbies to learn this stuff right.

I was just called for an assignment for tomorrow and I declined. I am nervous and want to attend a Practice Makes Perfect session instead. I. do. not. want. to. mess. up.

      • sagittarius

One of my BFFs works for County Clerk David Orr. Election judges and equipment managers are besieged by the turnout. I don’t expect to talk to her until around Thanksgiving

@stormyweather25: BREAKING: Confirmed flooding on NYSE. The trading floor is flooded under more than 3 feet of water ____________________I do find it fascinating that in the last week of the election, where the choice is so clear in one candidate being for ALL OF US and a strong government has to run against the most vile, dishonest lying piece of shit vulture who wants to privatize everything and constantly rails against big government and the virtues of private industry…..the media can’t hide it – against their will, we are seeing the stark differences in the Obama and Romney philosophies. No more theorizing about it from emoprogs, this is real life, all those small government nuts – what now? Wanna get rid of firefighters and police officers and first responders? Don’t want the federal government’s hand? Wanna defund all of our weather services at NOAA? Romney is on tape that is being played all over social media, touting his desire to turn FEMA into 50 separate entities which would be a mess or better yet…privatize it! Yeah, you need to be evacuated…its a go as long as your credit card clears! Blustery Chris Christie touting his call from PBO, Romney trying to backtrack over his dissing of FEMA, The President standing above all the fray being the commander-in-chief he was born to be – its the end of October….surprise.

  • JojoRaze

Updating you guys on my state. I’m good. The roads here in my Bronx neighborhood are dry. The wind is heavy though. I still (praise be to God) have electricity. Via Twitter and here though–I use twitter even though I don’t actually have an account–I’m learning that Lower Manhattan is basically under water. I’m guessing the subway won’t reopen tomorrow as the schools are closed and our utility (ConEd) is having serious issues.

One of their main substations near the FDR exploded. I’m also wondering if it isn’t time for a lot of these new media companies to move deeper into the outer boroughs since hurricanes like this are the new norm in NYC. Lower Manhattan and Williamsburg might have cache, but if you’re gonna flood every year, it makes no sense. Buzzfeed, Gizmodo and Gawker are still down since they, or their data service provider got flooded.

GN, I know you are also in NYC. How are you keeping up?

    • crazycanuck

Just read on twitter that in NY a hospital generator is not working.

      • gc

Oh crap. I volunteer with patients, with the homeless. WE are comfortable, but there are those who are not.

      • nellcote

It’s NYU hospital. People are being evacuated.

Good to hear from you, JoJo. Stay safe.

    • GN

I’m ok; never been happier to live in Brooklyn but this wind is honestly scaring the shit out of me because my apt has a lot of glass. But I have power, water, etc. Not even a cable tv disruption. What’a happening in Manhattan is crazy. Glad to know you’re okay; thx so much for asking. I hope that Sepia and our Connecticut folks (gc, arrogantdemon) check in; the situation in CT, particularly along the shore, seems really bad from what I’m seeing on the news.

      • JojoRaze

Glad to hear from you. It’s the same with me. My power, water and cable still going strong; but I’m prepared if anything goes wrong.

I hope GC and other CT and Jersey folks check in. Also, Sepia, as well since she’s in Newark.

Stay safe guys. Charge your phone while you power. And follow your emergency manager/city folks via Twitter even if you don’t have smart phone like me. You can do this by texting the Twitter name of the person, e.g., ConEdison, like this: FOLLOW ConEdison to 40404. This is how I’m getting Tweets from the NYC Mayor’s office, ConEd, etc. You can always text STOP after the storm/emergency to the same 40404 number.

        • GN

Srsly grateful to be in an outer borough tonight, that’s for sure.

          • JojoRaze

Girl, I was church jogging that I live in the BX. The wind has even calmed down now here.

        • gc

I’m fine so far – see above – and thank you!

        • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Hey! So far, so good. Right now the winds are something fierce! They’re reporting wind speeds are around 60+ mph and you can feel it! Not much rain and no flooding.

Luckily, I still have electricity, although the lights did flicker a bit. I hope and pray the power stays on.

They’ve reported that a man was killed in Queens when a tree fell on his house. *smh* Stay safe ya’ll.

      • sagittarius

Glad to hear from you, GN. Continue to stay safe

        • GN

Thanks Sag! Seeing the news coverage, I feel quite lucky to be in an outer borough and relatively unscathed.

      • gc

You are all so sweet. It touches me. Our shoreline is destroyed, places we loved are half gone. But most importantly my family is OK here in central CT. So far. I watched TV, thinking I’ll miss my shows if/when the power goes out :) Next, to finish a book I started by lamplight, if/when…etc. We ate hot food, because if/when…etc. Hot bath is next. School is cancelled and I had some good jobs scheduled (like on Halloween – party time in kindergarten)
It was last year at this time, we went a week without power due to a snowstorm. How weird is that. Last year, though I was in medical/psych distress, making everything worse. More worried this year about my parents, but so far, so good. If they lose power and we don’t, we are taking them in; my sister did last year. Thank you for caring – and take care fellow East Coasters!

    The subtexts of ‘grown-up’ talk
    By Steve Benen

    Mon Oct 29, 2012 12:53 PM EDT

Mother Jones’ David Corn published the scoop on Mitt Romney’s infamous “47 percent” video in September, and ever since, he’s broken a series of related stories about other remarks the Republican has delivered behind closed doors. Today, Corn moves the ball forward, noting a speech Romney delivered in March in Orange County, California.

There’s a few interesting angles — Romney, for example, believes President Obama believes private enterprise is a “necessary evil,” and longs for Chinese business practices — but there was one element to the story that stood out for me.

In context, Romney had just explained that he decided to run in this cycle at his wife’s instance. The candidate then asked Ann Romney to say a few words.

“You know, the ship’s going over the waterfall, it’s almost there. And we look what’s happening in Greece, and we look what’s happening around the world, we look what’s happening internationally. This is a frightening world, and we need a grown-up, and we need someone that understands the economy. So I’m glad … Mitt is grown up to you all.”

Now, Ann Romney isn’t a candidate for public office, and the fact that she’s confused about the Greek crisis and fiscal issues isn’t terribly interesting.

But her talk about the nation needing “a grown-up” strikes me as troubling. Indeed, it rankles because of the larger pattern — Ann Romney just this month compared the president to an obstinate child; Josh Romney said the same thing; and during one of the debates, Mitt Romney also compared Obama to his children.

I try not to be overly sensitive about these things, but something is amiss.

    ——————————————————————————–

Regardless of your opinions about him, Barack Obama is a 51-year-old man. He’s the president of the United States during a time of several crises, including two wars. His status as a “grown-up” is not in doubt.

If the Romneys want to argue that Obama’s not good at his job, fine, we can have the debate. If they choose not to respect the president, that’s their business. But to question whether Obama is an adult, and to use this as a line of attack more than once, raises very different kinds of questions about the Romneys.

    – – – -The charitable remainder unitrust, as it is known, is one of several strategies Romney has adopted over his career to reduce his tax bill. While Romney’s tax avoidance is legal and common among high-net-worth individuals, it has become an issue in the campaign. President Barack Obama attacked him in their second debate for paying “lower tax rates than somebody who makes a lot less.”

In this instance, Romney used the tax-exempt status of a charity — the Mormon Church, according to a 2007 filing — to defer taxes for more than 15 years. At the same time he is benefitting, the trust will probably leave the church with less than what current law requires, according to tax returns obtained by Bloomberg this month through a Freedom of Information Act request.

    – – -Nearly a month after a Pennsylvania court suspended the law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls this November, reports of misinformation on the voter ID law are still rolling in.

The latest misleading claim comes from CBS Pittburgh radio station KDKA, which is running an ad claiming that voters will need photo identification to go to the polls on November 6th, despite the fact that while voters may be asked to show ID, it is not required to vote. The ad aired on October 26, around 7:30 am immediately after a weather report for the Pittsburgh area. “The Voter ID law was just recently signed by the governor,” an unidentified woman in the ad says:

    – – -But it also follows a trend of misleading information in the state — like billboards and television ads, as well as reports from local governments — that has become so rampant voting rights’ groups have asked a court to step in to stop the wrong information from spreading.

    – – -Anderson Cooper Talk Show Won’t Return for a Third Season

    – – – - The syndication arm of the Warner Brothers studio has decided that there will not be a third season of “Anderson,” the daily talk show hosted by Anderson Cooper.

Citing disappointing ratings, a studio executive, who insisted on not being identified because the studio had planned no official release on the decision, said on Monday that the entire talk television market has been struggling to build audiences. Mr. Cooper’s show, which is produced by Telepictures, will end after the summer of 2013.

The executive spoke because some of the stations that have been carrying Mr. Cooper’s show have begun making feelers about replacement shows, and the news was certain to leak out through one of them, the executive said.
