    – – — With the new year approaching, Republicans are not feeling as enthusiastic about 2013 as their Democratic counterparts, a new Washington Post-ABC poll finds. Perhaps due to the sweeping Democratic and progressive victories across the country in November, only 25 percent of Republicans feel personally hopeful for what the new year will bring; just 18 percent think the world will be better off in 2013. Democrats are much more hopeful, with 75 percent predicting a good year for themselves:

Longtime Criminal Set A Trap To Murder Firefighters, Say Police

By Zack Beauchamp on Dec 24, 2012 at 3:10 pm

The Webster, New York man who fired on firefighters responding to a blaze, killing two, is a felon convicted of manslaughter, according to local police. Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering told a press conference this morning that the suspect was William Spengler, who served roughly 18 years on manslaughter charges for killing his 92 year old grandmother. Spengler had a number of run-ins with the police after that, according to Pickering.

Because Spengler was convicted a felon, he was supposed to be legally barred from owning a gun. However, because of the so-called “gun show loophole” — a National Rifle Assocation (NRA) supported-policy that allows “private” gun sales to take place without background checks — it’s possible Spengler could have purchased his weapon without the seller even checking whether he could legally own a gun or had a history of violence. Guns bought in this manner are used in 80 percent of violent firearm crimes across the country. Moreover, it’s very easy, as a consequence of another set of NRA-supported changes to federal law, for some felons to get their right to own guns reinstated.

When asked about the nature of Spengler’s murderous assault on the firefighters, Pickering said that, from what they could tell so far, “it was a trap.”

Hagel Would Be First Former Enlisted Soldier To Run Pentagon

Former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska is said to be on President Obama’s short list to be the next defense secretary. But even the possibility of his nomination has stirred up opposition — particularly from members of his own political party.

If Hagel can survive a political ambush in Washington, he would be the first Pentagon chief who saw combat as an enlisted soldier.

The blunt-spoken Hagel favors deeper cuts in military spending and is wary of entangling America in long overseas missions.

    more here:

    • TyrenM

To you and Conlakappa (who told me Generals couldn’t lead the Pentagon): IOKIYAR. That and they ain’t gonna do him like they did Dr. Rice. One last thing. I hope we get some Holiday appointments, especially to the courts.

      • nellcote

They’ve already started in on Hagel. He’s not pro-Israel enough for the AIPAC crowd, who are the same ones who went after Rice.

Recess appointments only last until the end of the Senate session so would only be good for a few weeks. In January PBO has to wait for the Senate to actually recess and they have ways to avoid that even when they’re on vacation. Recess appointments aren’t easy to do.

I Gotta Get This Cruise Gig

    by BooMan
Mon Dec 24th, 2012 at 02:58:47 PM EST

Every year I fantasize about going on the stupid National Review cruise (incognito, of course). This year, it must have been extra delicious. It certainly sounds like it was a blast. I wonder if I would come to feel sympathy for the cruisers or if my anger would just gradually rise to the point that I wanted to torpedo the ship.

These folks can’t function in a world where a black man runs the country instead of serving them drinks. And they are so ruined over it that they can’t even register the gargantuan improvement in how the country is being run now that a black man is in charge when compared to the Blue-Blooded WASP who preceded him.

Reality isn’t supposed to be this way:

At other times, things got a little too old-fashioned for comfort. I met a man near the railing who was there as a caregiver for a 70-year-old National Review cruiser from Palm Desert, California. He was gay and seemingly liberal and had come on the cruise only to push his boss around in a wheelchair. As he smoked a cigarette, he recounted a conversation the two had about the ship’s largely Indonesian and Filipino staff.
BOSS: You notice none of the workers are white.

    CAREGIVER: Except the managers upstairs.

BOSS: Well, that’s the way it should be.

Or, as Jonah Goldberg explains, somewhat more diplomatically:

“This is a more downbeat bunch this year,” he said. “We lost in 2008, but it was almost boisterous and fun. This, a little less so. People were dyspeptic. “Their conception of what the country is about, they really were sure the country would reject Barack Obama,” he continued. “I do think it hits them hard. The fear I have, why this election stung, I think, Obama has successfully de-ratified some of the Reagan revolution in a way that Clinton never could and didn’t even try to. That’s what freaks people out, that feeling in their gut, either Obama has changed the country, or the country has sufficiently changed that they don’t have a problem with Obama. That’s what eats at people.”

Yeah, the guy saved the economy and the stock market doubled, but he’s black and that eats at these people. Better to lose half your fortune than to double it, cuz he’s black.

“Rasmussen offered some friendly advice about approaching minorities. “You show them that you really care, you talk to them as grown-ups on a range of issues, you get them involved,” he suggested, “and you accept the fact that it’s a long-term investment. And you accept that you can learn as much from them as you can teach them.”

I actually read the whole article. Confirms everything you ever thought rich, white republicans think about anybody who isn’t them.

Aside from the few ‘tokens’ are on board, they are all old, white, rich, hateful and delusional. They really truly think that they are better because they are rich and white. Whatever…

      • JojoRaze

Maybe it’s because I live in a bluest portion of a blue state…the most racist thing that has happened to me is being followed by an Eastern European immigrant clerk in Nordstrom’s in Westchester County and a month or so ago a white lady on the Upper East Side literally clung to her purse when I stepped beside her at a crosswalk–I had on a cardigan and a checkered a-line skirt, so I was straight gangster and scary–but this article seemed so unreal to me….

It felt like all these people were Thurston Howell III and Luvies, and John Yoos Korean mama was the only one with any type of sense.

I’m laughing and crying at the same time.

        • Miranda

Awww come on……ere body knows the cardigan and checkered skirt are the crips! You ain’t foolin us!

          • JojoRaze

The cardigan was a light blue! However, my ankle length long A-line skirts and cardigans usually only elicit store clerks calling me “Ma’am,” not fearful I was gonna jack someone.

Ole girl was holding her purse all lackadaisical, but I was only trying to cross the street to get on the F train–gangster behavior, y’all.

      • rikyrah

explain to me people how this isn’t just straight up COONING?

The last event before cocktails and dinner was a lecture by Deroy Murdock, the only black National Review speaker. It was a curious outlier on the agenda, titled “How the Music of Memphis and Motown Helped Bury Jim Crow,” and set in a smaller, more intimate venue midship. Murdock was wearing a red satin dinner jacket and a black bow tie, presumably to look like a Motown singer. About 50 people attended, sitting on white leather lounge chairs, and there was a Rolling Stones tongue logo on a screen behind him as he cued up “Brown Sugar” on the sound system.

Murdock got the all-white crowd clapping along, including the venerable neoconservative intellectuals Norman Podhoretz and Midge Decter, who smiled broadly.

“Brown Sugar! / How come it tastes so good?”

When the music faded, Murdock, in a studious tone, read from his prepared notes: “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it!”

In his reading of racism in America, Murdock highlighted Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who he said promoted segregation in 1936. “He, of course, went on to great fame and fortune afterward,” he observed.

The Democrats, explained Murdock, have been “very active in keeping black people down” from 1860 to … 2012. “Go ahead and applaud if you agree with that,” said Murdock.

The audience sat up and clapped hard.

        • isonprize

Can’t do that, Rikyrah. It IS Cooning.

For Poor, Leap to College Often Ends in a Hard Fall

    Published: December 22, 2012

Angelica Gonzales marched through high school in Goth armor — black boots, chains and cargo pants — but undermined her pose of alienation with a place on the honor roll. She nicknamed herself after a metal band and vowed to become the first in her family to earn a college degree

I don’t want to work at Walmart” like her mother, she wrote to a school counselor.

Weekends and summers were devoted to a college-readiness program, where her best friends, Melissa O’Neal and Bianca Gonzalez, shared her drive to “get off the island” — escape the prospect of dead-end lives in luckless Galveston. Melissa, an eighth-grade valedictorian, seethed over her mother’s boyfriends and drinking, and Bianca’s bubbly innocence hid the trauma of her father’s death. They stuck together so much that a tutor called them the “triplets.”

Low-income strivers face uphill climbs, especially at Ball High School, where a third of the girls’ class failed to graduate on schedule. But by the time the triplets donned mortarboards in the class of 2008, their story seemed to validate the promise of education as the great equalizer.

Angelica, a daughter of a struggling Mexican immigrant, was headed to Emory University. Bianca enrolled in community college, and Melissa left for Texas State University, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s alma mater.

“It felt like we were taking off, from one life to another,” Melissa said. “It felt like, ‘Here we go!’ ”

Four years later, their story seems less like a tribute to upward mobility than a study of obstacles in an age of soaring economic inequality. Not one of them has a four-year degree. Only one is still studying full time, and two have crushing debts. Angelica, who left Emory owing more than $60,000, is a clerk in a Galveston furniture store.

Each showed the ability to do college work, even excel at it. But the need to earn money brought one set of strains, campus alienation brought others, and ties to boyfriends not in school added complications. With little guidance from family or school officials, college became a leap that they braved without a safety net.

The story of their lost footing is also the story of something larger — the growing role that education plays in preserving class divisions. Poor students have long trailed affluent peers in school performance, but from grade-school tests to college completion, the gaps are growing. With school success and earning prospects ever more entwined, the consequences carry far: education, a force meant to erode class barriers, appears to be fortifying them.

First lady answers children’s calls for NORAD Santa-tracking program– —

    — —First lady Michelle Obama spent about 30 minutes answering calls from children on Monday as part of NORAD’s Santa-tracking program, according to a White House official.

The Obamas are in Hawaii for their annual Christmas vacation.

The NORAD program, which began in 1955, attracts millions of visitors to its website from hundreds of countries and territories.

More than 1,200 volunteers staff an operation center that responds to hundreds of thousands of phone calls and emails from around the world.

Mrs. Obama gave callers Santa’s latest position on NORAD’s map and answered personal questions.

One girl from New Jersey, named Abigail, wanted to know the first lady’s favorite Christmas song.

“My favorite Christmas song? That’s a good question, Abby. I like ‘Jingle Bells,’ because everybody can sing ‘Jingle Bells,'” the first lady said. “What’s your favorite song?”

    — —CNN Panelist On ‘White Privilege’: We Have To Ask Why All Recent Mass Killings Committed By ‘White Guys’– –

—- –CNN panelist David Sirota and writer at told Don Lemon Saturday that we need to “explore” the question of why so many recent mass killings were committed by white men. “I’m not saying we should racially profile white guys,” he said, but suggested that had the shooters been “Arabs” or “African-American men”, we’d be having a “very different conversation” in this country.

According to Sirota, many of the recent gun tragedies in America have been carried out by white men, 18- to 25-years-old. He asks,

“Why is the composite so similar? Why are 70% of these mass shootings at the hands of white men? Not to say they should be racially profiled but to ask the question, why is the composite so similar? Let’s explore that. Let’s ask that question.”

“It’s an important question,” Sirota notes, “in light of a political climate” where a “white victimization” narrative is widespread. He continued.–
    – – — -SNIP- – –

Lemon referenced a recent article Sirota had written in which he said if the shooter was a black male, he’d be a labelled a “thug,” or if he was Muslim, he’d be labelled a “terrorist,” but since he’s white, no generalized labels have been thrown about. Sirota stood by his piece and said he hoped the “next time something bad happens,” we don’t “ascribe to entire groups the bad actions of individuals.” The reason we’re not now, he said, is because it’s a form of “white privilege.”

    An Itty-Bitty White House

    – – – —It’s Christmas Eve, what better time to share a little gingerbread delight? Here’s a time lapse of the creation of the gingerbread White House. While some of us (cough) just started baking cookies yesterday, the Pastry Chef Bill Yosses and his talented team “spent months planning, baking, building, and decorating the structure — which is made from more than 175 pounds of gingerbread and more than 50 pounds of chocolate.”

The 2012 holiday décor at the White House features a 300 pound representation of the President’s’ house made entirely from edible treats.

Watch here (mind the falling snow):— -ENJOY. :>)
