how come Bashir got it, and the Ivory Tower didn’t?

    • nellcote

Bashir likes PBO and actually listens to what he says.

    • isonprize

I know I’m a bit late to the party here, but Bashir gets it because, in addition to being a decent host and analyst, essentially, regardless of his heritage, here in THIS country, he’s a black man.

As brown as he is? I get the sense that he’s has experienced more than a few “black wake-up calls”

  • Miranda

    MISTAKE?!!

Dude, you left the COUNTRY!! While you were GOVERNOR! NOBODY KNEW WHERE U WERE!

Sanford in first ad: ‘None of us go through life without mistakes’

(CNN) – Former Republican Gov. Mark Sanford addressed the controversy that derailed his marriage and reputation in his first television ad for the special election in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.

“I’ve experienced how none of us go through life without mistakes. But in their wake we can learn a lot about grace, a God of second chances and be the better for it,” Sanford says in the spot, looking directly into the camera.

“In that light,” he continued. “I humbly step forward and ask for your help in changing Washington.”

Genius Alabama Rep. Says a Baby is the ‘Largest Organ in a Body’

The Alabama House of Representatives is set to vote on abortion legislation Tuesday that would impose a variety of uneccesary restrictions on abortion clinics: providers would need to have admitting privileges at local hospitals (not such an easy feat when your local hospital thinks abortion is murder), clinics would have to follow needlessly prohibitive building codes, and nurses, nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants would be charged with a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison for dispensing abortion-inducing medications to patients.

Most of those are the good ol’ TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers) standbys we’re familiar with; Mississipi might lose its only abortion clinic because of similar legislation. But bill sponsor Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin came up with a creative defense for her legislation that we don’t think we’ve heard before. From the Montgomery Advertiser:

“When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body,” McClurkin said in an interview Thursday. “That’s a big thing. That’s a big surgery. You don’t have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that.”

My liver, heart, and skin are all very excited that we are now giving organs personhood rights, although the latter is slightly upset about losing out on its “largest organ in the human body” rep.

    – – –BLACK HISTORY MOMENT – – -:>) – –

—-Determined to Serve: Black Doctors in the Civil War- —

—– - This year marks the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War when the nation was divided over the issue of slavery.

During that time, many freed blacks enlisted in the Union Army, including several African American doctors.

Little is known about these brave men, but there is a move to change that.

    Prologue to Change

Retired physician Dr. Robert Slawson is fascinated by two subjects: history and medicine.

Slawson spent eight years as a doctor in the Army and 28 years teaching medicine at the University of Maryland. He is particularly interested in medical history, mainly the contributions that African Americans have made.

    Why Hagel Matters

    Feb 18 2013 @ 11:47am

As I’ve written before, a huge amount of this is opposition to any US defense secretary who doesn’t see Israel as a 51st state or somehow subject to evangelical theological doctrines that over-rule any diplomatic ones. And insofar as Israel is an issue, they particularly oppose a defense secretary who believes that Israel’s continued settlement of the West Bank is a huge liability for the US in its relationship with the entire Muslim and Arab world and a constant recruiting mechanism for terrorists to attack the West. Then there’s Hagel’s deadly combination of two Purple Hearts and a foreign policy realism versus Dick Cheney’s five deferments in Vietnam and “ignorant interventionism”.

But Josh Marshall also notes the broader generational fact that Hagel and Obama do not see the Middle East as the center of America’s security challenges. As our oil independence grows, the relevance of all those oil-producing despotisms or democracies or failed states declines. And so the worldview that was defined as “mainstream” only a few years ago seriously is being challenged:

Hagel in himself is no singular figure. But he’s part of the Scowcroft/Brezinzski et al. running critique of Bush era foreign policy. It’s not just that he didn’t vote for this or that declaration about the Iranian government or doesn’t toe the Likud line on the Israel/Palestine front. He’s one of those people who just don’t think these issues should be the be all and end all of our role in the world at all. And that’s extremely threatening to some people.

MSNBC Panel: GOP Rallying Around Dr. Benjamin Carson ‘A Sign Of Some Serious Desperation’On Monday, a panel segment moderated by MSNBC’s Martin Bashir sought to examine the Republican politicians with the most potential to mount a successful presidential bid in 2016. After analyzing the political prospects of a variety of current GOP officeholders, the panel turned to Dr. Benjamin Carson who rose to relevance after he delivered a conservative speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. Bashir’s panel guests said that, if the GOP turns to Carson in the hopes that he could remedy their political problems, it is merely “a sign of some serious desperation.”

Bashir asked Ryan Grim, Washington bureau chief for The Huffington Post, for his thoughts on Carson’s electoral prospects.

“Far be it for me to predict the future, but to me it seems like a sign of some serious desperation,” Grim said. “If they’re all gravitating around a person who has never held any public office, and nobody has ever heard of them up until, you know, a couple of weeks ago. So, I just don’t see how this becomes a presidential campaign by 2016.”http://www.mediaite.com/tv/msnbc-panel-gop-rallying-around-dr-benjamin-carson-a-sign-of-some-serious-desperation/

*snicker*Obama goes off-record with ‘frustrated’ White House press corps
    By DYLAN BYERS |
    2/18/13 8:50 PM EST

One day after the White House press corps expressed “extreme frustration” with their lack of access to the president, Obama visited the back of Air Force One tonight for a chat with reporters.

But the talk, which lasted ten minutes, according to a pool report, was off the record — another sign, as if one was needed, that when it comes to the relationship between the president and the press, the commander-in-chief sets the rules.http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/02/obama-goes-offrecord-with-frustrated-white-house-press-157255.html#.USLa369ChDQ.twitter

    miranda – — — Woo! Hoo! — –The — “RINGLINGS” – – GOT a REAL BROTHA!! — –A FIRST!! – – –

    – -Johnathan Lee Iverson (born 1976) became the first African-American ringmaster of a major U.S. circus[1] in 1999 at the age of 22 -when he won the position at Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

    — — Johnathan Lee Iverson: Ringling Bros.’ 1st Black Ringmaster- –

——Christopher A. Daniel writes at TheBurtonWire that Johnathan Lee Iverson, Ringling Bros.’ first black ringmaster, is the luckiest man in show business. Forty-eight weeks a year, he’s in a different U.S. city entertaining alongside a diverse cast and doing what he loves most: singing.

“I’m a fierce advocate for living out the best life you possibly can. There’s no glory in living beneath yourself,” says Iverson.

And rightfully so. The 6-foot-5 performer is the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus’ youngest and first black ringmaster. The New York City native’s stellar voice — since the 129th edition — has been a staple in the 143-year-old Greatest Show on Earth’s celebratory, mystic and family-friendly production.

Iverson’s innate ability to mesmerize audiences is rooted in eight years as the Boys Choir of Harlem’s lead tenor. He trained extensively across various genres. He circled the globe to perform for various entertainers, politicians and world dignitaries. When Iverson performed for Lena Horne, he earned second prize in the entertainer’s vocal jazz scholarship. “She was such a gem, such a lady and so down home,” says Iverson. “It was one of the highest points in my life.”

    – – – – -On Monday night, Bill O’Reilly invited Charles Krauthammer to chat about the outrage du jour: President Obama‘s super-secret golfing vacation. Krauthammer wasn’t buying into the hype though, deeming the whole thing a “non-story” — and further arguing that point with an allusion to the Kardashians.

It’s a “trivial issue,” Krauthammer dismissed.

“If the guy wants to play golf, the guy deserves a couple of days off. He wants privacy? Big deal,” he asserted, adding that it’s the “biggest non-story the media have created since the Kardashian weddings.”

He simply doesn’t understand the outrage, he said. —–

    – — — -*According to Billy Wilson of the Motown Alumni Association, former Temptations member Damon Harris (born Otis Robert Harris, Jr.) died Monday evening at the age of 61. Wilson’s report didn’t reveal the cause of death, but Harris had been suffering from prostate cancer.

Harris was born on July 17, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland. He took the place of Eddie Kendricks, one of the original lead singers of the Temptations group. He was only Twenty years old when he joined the group, and was the youngest member of The Temptations during his time with the group. –

    – -Wilson says Harris was so good as the replacement for Kendricks, that most people did not know it was Harris’ voice on the Grammy award-winning hits “Cloud Nine,” “Psychedelic Shack,” and other 70s Temptations hits. His tenure was from 1971 to 1975.
