Black church protests Hank Williams Jr. for calling Obama Hitler

I was just in Tuscaloosa over the weekend…God bless these gentlemen!

Members of an African-American church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama showed up at a Hank Williams Jr. concert on Saturday to speak out about his racially offensive lyrics and his comments about President Barack Obama.

“It was a peaceful protest,” Christ Baptist Church’s Reverend Ransey O’Daniel told Raw Story. “We just wanted to stand up for unity. I don’t dislike Mr. Williams. I just dislike some of his lyrics that he has produced.”

Gay Couple Makes Case For Nondiscrimination Order At White House Egg Roll

By Igor Volsky on Apr 9, 2012 at 12:02 pm

Jarrod Scarbrough and Les Sewell — the gay couple urging President Obama to sign an LGBT-inclusive executive order at this morning’s Egg Role at the White House — told MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts this morning that the measure could shield their family from anti-gay discrimination. The decree, which would prohibit federal contractors from discriminating in the workplace based on sexual orientation or gender identity, has been rubber stamped by the Labor and Justice Departments and is now awaiting approval from the White House.

“Jarrod works for a company that the government contracts through, and we live in New Mexico — we’re actually protected, we don’t have to worry too much about being discriminated against. However, in June we’re moving to Florida where that protection, we’ll no longer have that,” Sewell said. “Without this administrative action, Jarrod could lose his job and then where would this family be?”

Limbaugh to Leave AM Station in Philadelphia

“The Rush Limbaugh Show” is leaving the dominant conservative talk radio station in Philadelphia, one of the biggest radio markets in the country.

In its place on the station, WPHT, will go “The Michael Smerconish Show,” hosted by Mr. Smerconish, a native of the city.

The move does not appear to be directly related to the recent ad boycott against Mr. Limbaugh, which was started after he repeatedly attacked Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown University law school student, on his three-hour show. Two of his roughly 600 affiliates dropped the show in the wake of those attacks.

      • GN

The article and the letter are bullshit; the Zimmermans have some audacity demanding anyone else’s arrest–same as them sending a nasty letter to the NAACP warning of “blood on your hands,” meanwhile George Zimmerman killed an unarmed kid! Almost none of the media is discussing how poisonous and divisive this family’s correspondence is.

      Dear George Zimmerman,

You are being arrested for hate crimes in the homicide of Trayvon Benjamin Martin. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do can and will be held against you in a court of law.
You have the right to speak to an attorney.
If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.
Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you?

JP (Justice of the Peace) admonished by state commission over remarks

    J. Kent Adams, a Justice of the Peace in Spring, has been admonished for inappropriate comments made from the bench and to lawyers in his chambers, including a 2011 incident in which he asked a black mother “if she was on welfare and expected the government to pay her fine.”

According to the public condemnation by the State Commission on Judicial Conduct, Adams also asked a Hispanic parent, “if she had 6 or 7 kids,” and told a Pakistani parent that her son should be “stoned to death.”

A public admonishment is the lowest form of public punishment the commission can levy.

Monsanto threatens legal action over Vermont GMO labeling bill

A representative of Missouri-based food giant Monsanto, which has in its history filed hundreds of lawsuits over use of its seed gene patents, threatened lawmakers with civil litigation if they pass the bill, according to a report this week from Alternet.

The bill, H.722, otherwise known as the Vermont Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act, was introduced to the Vermont House in February, but lawmakers have hesitated to cast their ballots ahead of a public hearing on April 12.

  • Police: 2 suspects confessed in Tulsa shootings

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Police documents filed in court say the two suspects arrested in a shooting spree that terrorized Tulsa’s black community have both confessed.

An affidavit filed Monday says 19-year-old Jake England confessed to shooting three people and 32-year-old Alvin Watts confessed to shooting two.

The shootings early Friday morning left three people dead and two seriously wounded. It’s not clear from the affidavit which man shot which victim, but the document says police believe Watts shot two of the three people who died.

I tend to think of Markel Hutchins as a publicity whore, but if this gets the law struck down, more power to him.

Lawsuit challenges Georgia’s stand your ground law

A federal lawsuit was filed Monday asking that Georgia’s “stand your ground law” be struck down because it’s vague and could result in a disproportionate number of minorities being shot.
Markel Hutchins said in his suit that Georgia’s law does not specify what circumstances justify deadly force being used in cases of self defense.

“It is not clear what actions would create ‘reasonable belief’ that deadly force is necessary,” said the suit filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta. “An individual seeking to stand their ground and assert self-defense has no way of knowing if their ‘reasonable belief’ comports with the standards protected by the law and [they] want to ensure that they do not subject themselves to criminal penalties.”

    – – –Trayvon Martin Case: Martin family attorney responds to cancellation of grand jury – — –

    – — —Florida State Attorney Angela Corey announced today that she will not be taking the Trayvon Martin case before a grand jury. Corey took over the investigation into the February 26 killing of the unarmed Martin by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in Sanford, which had been started by State Attorney Norm Wolfinger.

    – —In response to Corey’s announcement that no grand jury will be held, Benjamin Crump, the Martin family attorney, issued the following response:

We are not surprised by this announcement and, in fact, are hopeful that a decision will be reached very soon to arrest George Zimmerman and give Trayvon Martin’s family the simple justice they have been seeking all along.

The family has been patient throughout this process and asks that those who support them do the same during this very important investigation.

    – – -SKIP – —

Corey is not bound by law to hold a grand jury investigation into Martin’s death, which is a legal requirement for first degree murder alone. Corey can bring charges against Zimmerman at any time based on her independent assessment, and has stated that she is not working according to a predetermined timeline.

Focusing on What’s Important in the Trayvon Martin Case

One of the sadder aspects of Trayvon Martin’s death is how it’s becoming a touchstone for a nebulous and unresolvable “conversation around race” instead of a touchstone for discussing the horrendous job Martin’s local police department did in investigating his death…

…For some reason there’s this notion out there that Trayvon was killed on Monday, Al Sharpton showed up on Tuesday, and there were marches on Wednesday. There’s an entire contingent of critics who are much more comfortable attacking Sharpton, or wondering why “black on black” crime doesn’t attract any protests.

… more importantly the protests aren’t merely about Trayvon Martin’s killing, they are about the failure of a police department to rigorously investigate a crime… At its root, Trayvon Martin’s killing is a law and order case, and you would think conservatives would latch on to that. Instead, with few exceptions, we are being told that the true calamity here is the presence of Al Sharpton.

    – – – – –Al Sharpton, who has been in the forefront of calling attention to the Trayvon Martin case, has released a statement about the special prosecutor’s decision today to forego bringing the case before a grand jury.

It “vindicates the position that we have taken all along—that is you do not need a grand jury to make an arrest of George Zimmerman on probable cause,” he says. “It does not necessarily mean that this arrest will be made immediately. Therefore, we intend to keep the pressure on as we remain cautiously optimistic that this will lead to an arrest.

    – – — THIS – – ->“We will announce a collective strategy at NAN’s Convention this week in Washington as we deal with several sessions and will be joined at some point by the parents of Trayvon Martin who will meet for the first time with the families of Amadou Diallo and Sean Bell as we talk about what we are going to do to correct these inequalities.”

    – – – —In preparing his 1997 movie “Titanic” for 3-D, James Cameron reportedly reshot a scene because an astronomer told him that the position of the stars was wrong in the original movie.

Christine LeBrun, 35, of Palatine, said there’s another historical inaccuracy in Cameron’s original blockbuster that she wishes he’d corrected for the new “Titanic 3D”: He didn’t include any mention of Joseph Laroche, a Haitian-born, French-educated engineer traveling with his family who is believed to be the only black man among the passengers on the Titanic.

LeBrun recently found out that Laroche is a distant relative.

The 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking is April 15, and LeBrun says that despite the many accounts about the ill-fated cruise liner, very few have featured Laroche.
