Monday Open Thread: 8-Ballers!

Good Morning Obots! Hope you have a relaxing and wonderful Memorial Day!

This week, let’s take a look at some ballers-shot callers..in the world of Pool…or Billiards, as it is properly known.

Cisero Murphy (1937 – 1996) was an American professional pool player. Murphy was the first African-American professional pocket billiards player to ever win world and U.S. national titles. He is also one of two players to win the world title on a first attempt, the other being Ray Martin who won the title in 1971.

James “Cisero” Murphy grew up in a rough-and-tough Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, one of eight children. His father left the family home when Murphy was a child, forcing his mother to go on welfare. At 15, he was a high school dropout. One summer, however, young James began playing pool at the Police Athletic League (PAL), and except for short-term jobs, he continued playing pool for the duration of his life.

He became city champion in 1953 and state champion in 1958. From 1959 to 1964, he was eastern state champion in the PAL. Later in life, Murphy participated in city programs in an effort to help young adults and children, such as Billiards in the Streets, which was sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation. He also would visit veterans hospitals, senior citizen homes, and mental hospitals giving trick shot exhibitions and teaching people how to play pool.

He won the New York City championship at age sixteen, and when he was in his twenties, he won the Eastern States 14.1 Championship six straight times. Because he was African American in an era when there were racial tensions in the United States, Murphy was not invited to compete in world title events until 1965 despite his skills as a player. Many other African Americans who were not accepted in the world title events avoided confrontation due to intimidation. Murphy won the Burbank World Invitational 14.1 tournament in 1965, defeating white players such as Joe Balsis, Jimmy Moore and Luther Lassiter. Pool players picketed outside the front of the Commodore Hotel in Burbank, California, which was the site of the tournament, to protest Murphy’s exclusion. He soon won the battle to compete the very next year. He triumphed convincingly, winning the Burbank World Invitational 14.1 tournament in 1965, defeating Luther Lassiter in the finals.

Some people have compared Cisero Murphy to Major League Baseball’s Jackie Robinson, breaking the racial barriers (including the baseball color line) in sports. Murphy was inducted in to the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame 1995. Cisero Murphy is the only player in the history of pocket billiards competition to win a world title on his first attempt. He continued to place near the top in straight pool events during the 1960s and, two decades later, had a winning record in the 1983 BCA US Open 14.1 Championship. During his career, he has had high runs over 250 balls.

In the Flatbush neighborhood of New York City, there is a mural painted of Cisero Murphy shooting pool, along with fellow New Yorkers and baseball players Joe DiMaggio and Mike Piazza and Joseph “Cyclops” Bouie III.

You can watch the great match between Cisero and Luther Lassiter here and here.

Can you tell me the artists of the last two images, love them. And dovetails beautifully with last week’s theme.

Happy Holidays all, and as we discussed yesterday, I thank you Pres Obama for making this day resonate for me.

I cannot find where I pulled that painting from – I’ll have to do a history search and figure it out. The mural is in Brooklyn, Ny and I can’t find any information on the actual artist for that. In looking for that, I came across this print by Leroy Neiman called “Black Break” that is dedicated to Cisero Murphy:

      I love it.

Today, we should remember and celebrate those soldiers who have died, those who are currently serving and are military veterans who survived combat in any capacity.>/b> This Memorial Day, theGrio has compiled a list of African-American war heroes who have left their mark on this great nation.

Black New Orleans police officers help maintain blue wall of silence: Jarvis DeBerry

The Katrina-era atrocities and cover-ups carried out by the New Orleans Police Department show that black officers had no higher regard for the lives of black civilians than their other colleagues on the force. Black officers were among those who killed unarmed pedestrians and among those who kept mum about the crimes. Black New Orleanians weary of police aggression must wonder if there’s anyone on the force to whom they can turn, anyone they can trust not to keep them on their knees.

The police did many horrible things in 2005, but, as far as we know, no black body was treated with more disrespect than Henry Glover’s. The Algiers man was wrongfully shot to death the Friday after Katrina by white police officer David Warren. Gregory McRae, another white officer, drove Glover’s body to a nearby levee and set fire to it and the car. But according to FBI files obtained by The Times-Picayune, a black woman, Sgt. Lesia Mims, learned of Glover’s fate not long after he died. Mims was Warren’s supervisor, but she didn’t tell the FBI what she knew about the crimes until March 2010. When interviewed she said she “never asked or heard from anyone” about who burned Glover’s body.

Mims was promoted after Katrina and until last week, she held an investigative position in the department’s Public Integrity Bureau. After news of her silence was published Tuesday, police brass reassigned the 23-year veteran officer to desk duty. “This is completely new to us,” said Deputy Chief Arlinda Westbrook, the head of the Public Integrity Bureau. “We had no knowledge of this.”

GOP ties Obama to NH student debt, ignores origins
    Associated Press

CONCORD, N.H. — New Hampshire isn’t just first in the nation when it comes to hosting presidential primaries. It also ranks first in student-loan debt, and now the winner of the state’s Republican presidential primary is seizing on that fact to argue that President Barack Obama has let down students.

Coinciding with Vice President Joe Biden’s visit last week to Keene State College, the Republican Party released a web ad juxtaposing video of New Hampshire college students describing their staggering debt with what it characterized as Obama’s failed promises to deliver relief. But the truth is far more complicated, and at least one of the students featured in the ad was not happy to learn that his comments were used to further an argument he rejects.

“Considering I am not a supporter of Mitt Romney, this is not exactly sitting well with me,” said Matt Raso, who just finished his sophomore year at Southern New Hampshire University. The 19-year-old from Warwick, R.I., expects to graduate with roughly $80,000 in debt and said he doesn’t hold Obama or the federal government responsible for any of it.

“They can’t really control too much of what each school does,” he said.

The ad was later removed after the television station that interviewed Raso objected to the use of its copyrighted material. But Romney’s campaign stood by its assertion and plans to make the same argument in other battleground states, spokesman Ryan Williams said.

Let ’em make it. Soon enough, they’ll have to answer for it.

    • Miranda

Something tells me that more than just that one student complained that their comments were completely misrepresented and that’s why the ad came down. PBO’s camp needs to make an ad with those very same students blasting the Romney camp for their lying manipulating bitchassness.

And now the men who broke the color barrier in the last branch of the military to admit blacks will soon be awarded one of the nation’s highest honors.

As they think back on their service as Montford Point Marines with pride, not sure what to make of the years it has taken to get to this point,Theodore R. Britton Jr., John R. Hill Jr. and John B. Brown Sr. agree it is an honor long overdue.

Britton, Hill and Brown are among a few hundred surviving members of the 20,000 men who served as Montford Pointers, including 10 living in metro Atlanta.

Unlike better-known military units that helped end racial segregation such as the Tuskegee Airmen of the U.S. Army Air Forces and the Army’s Buffalo Soldiers, the Montford Point Marines had been overlooked. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)- —

    – – – –GOP Dishonors Veterans’ Sacrifice with Benefit Cuts and Privatized Healthcare Schemes – —

    – – –Another Memorial Day is upon us to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, and with American soldiers fighting in Afghanistan, it is important to reflect not only on their service and sacrifice, but on the reason they are in harm’s way. Using the military should be a last resort and only to defend this nation, however, there are politicians and leaders who take advantage of the military’s dedication and force to advance their own self-interests and they dishonor America’s service members with their cavalier attitude toward human life and taxpayer dollars.

    – – — -SKIP- – —

The presumptive Republican presidential candidate, Willard Romney, has made no secret that he is panting to send Americans to engage in a war with Iran, and it is in part because of his Bush-Cheney chicken hawk sensibilities and his cult’s belief that they are “latter day American Israelis.” It is Willard’s lifelong trait to promote sending other Americans to fight and die on foreign soil while he avoids making any sacrifice, and according to the Mormon cult, missionary service is more important than serving in the military. When Romney was queried whether his five sons served their country, he said they were serving by working to get him elected president, and pointed out that they proselytized for the cult for two years.

    – – -SKIP- – –

President Obama is a staunch supporter of our military and especially veterans, and his reluctance to send them in harm’s way for no apparent reason has garnered condemnation from Romney and Republican warmongers who dishonor their commitment by slashing benefits and pushing for more wars.

I visited my WW2 Vet Dad the other day. He proudly showed us photos from his time in the Army. We was a “medic” (I believe the are called “corpsmen and women” now) on the ship Hope. The photo that moved me most was the medics running to a side of the ship to hoist the wounded laden stretchers aboard. I had always been proud of the work he did, especially since my interests have always been in one area of Human Services or another. But thanks to our POTUS, I FINALLY fely the sense of patriotism that Obama himself does. He has inspired me in countless ways.

In Memorial Day Tribute, Mitt Romney Warns of Threats Around the Globe

SAN DIEGO – Delivering a Memorial Day tribute today, Mitt Romney thanked the sacrifice of servicemen and women while warning of the grave dangers around the globe, remarking frankly that “the world is not safe” before ticking off a list of grave security issues around the globe.

“I wish I could tell you that the world is a safe place today,” said Romney, speaking before a crowd of nearly 5,000 which included servicemen and women in uniform. The sizable crowd is one of the largest Romney has ever drawn. “It’s not. Iran is rushing to become a nuclear nation. As the national sponsor of terror around the world, the thought of missile material in the hands of Hezbollah or Hamas or other terrorists is simply unthinkable. Pakistan is home to some 100 nuclear weapons.”

“China’s on the road to becoming a … military superpower,” Romney continued. “Russia is rebuilding their military and is now led by a man who believes that the Soviet Union was a great, as opposed to evil, empire. Chavez is campaigning for power throughout Latin America. Mexico is under siege from the cartels and in the Middle East the Arab Spring has become an Arab Winter.”

Barney Frank Makes Awkward Trayvon Martin ‘Hoodie’ Joke During Commmencement

Barney Frank, the retiring Democratic congressman from Massachusetts, never known to speak anything but his mind, used his address to graduating seniors at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Sunday to make a cringe-inducing joke about hoodies.

“I do want to acknowledge a man who has played a major role in diminishing inequality in Massachusetts,” said Frank, referring to the activist Hubie Jones. “He’s a great man and I’ve worked with Hubie for many years. You know he got an honorary degree today. You know when you get an honorary degree they give you one of these,” said Frank, indicating the white graduation hood around his neck. “Hubie, I think you have a hoodie you can wear and nobody will shoot at you.”

Hoods are part of graduation dress, along with robes, for people with advanced or honorary degrees. A white one like Frank’s signifies a degree in the arts.

Hoodies are the sweatshirts with hoods like the one worn by Trayvon Martin the night he was killed in Florida by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. Since Martin’s death, hoodies have become a symbol of racially based divisions when a Geraldo Rivera blamed Martin’s hoodie for his death.

Girl posts cash pile image on Facebook, masked men raid house within hours
May. 28, 2012 (11:29 am) By: Matthew Humphries

Facebook and privacy are always going to be linked due to the personal information each account inevitably holds. The number one social media network is regularly making headlines over privacy concerns, and today is no different.

A home in Australia was robbed last week by two masked men just a few hours after an image of cash appeared on Facebook. The image showed a large pile of cash and was posted by a 17-year-old girl who was helping count her grandmother’s savings. It didn’t take long for the robbers to figure out where the house was located and travel there with the intention of stealing it.

The image was posted at 4pm on Thursday, May 24. At 11:30pm that day the two masked men arrived wielding a knife and wooden club. They forced their way into the house wanting to speak to the 17-year-old about the cash. She was no longer there (a 58-year-old man, woman of 47, and boy of 14 were, though), so the men instead left with a small amount of money they found by searching the home.

  • On Twitter, Koch Group Offers Illinois Residents Free Food, Trips To Wisconsin To Support Governor Scott Walker

By Lee Fang posted May 28th 2012 at 12:40PM

David Koch, co-owner of the Koch Industries petrochemical, manufacturing and commodity speculation fortune, hasn’t been shy about supporting Governor Scott Walker (R-WI), whose controversial union-busting agenda has forced a recall election this summer. Earlier this year, Koch told the Palm Beach Post: “We’re helping him, as we should. We’ve gotten pretty good at this over the years. We’ve spent a lot of money in Wisconsin. We’re going to spend more.”

Indeed, Koch has spent millions through the Republic Governors Association, through a network of attack-ad airing front groups, and financed a set of local Wisconsin think tanks to show support for Walker.

Now, it appears, Koch is spending money even in Illinois to help save Walker. Americans for Prosperity, a group founded by the Koch brothers, is advertising bus trips with free food for Illinois residents who commit to traveling to Wisconsin to help Walker:

        – -***blushin’*** – – -THANK YA. – – –

I remember that it WAS CALLED DECORATION DAY – -BUT I was NOT AWARE of it’s ORIGIN with SLAVES

NOW I did some more research: —

        – – –May 30, 1868:
Civil War dead honored on Decoration Day

        – — —By proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, the first major Memorial Day observance is held to honor those who died “in defense of their country during the late rebellion.” Known to some as “Decoration Day,” mourners honored the Civil War dead by decorating their graves with flowers. On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery.

The 1868 celebration was inspired by local observances that had taken place in various locations in the three years since the end of the Civil War. In fact, several cities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, including Columbus, Mississippi; Macon, Georgia; Richmond, Virginia; Boalsburg, Pennsylvania; and Carbondale, Illinois. In 1966, the federal government, under the direction of President Lyndon B. Johnson, declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day They chose Waterloo–which had first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866–because the town had made Memorial Day an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.
        THERE IS MORE.

Uhhhh – — -NOTE how THIS ARTICLE OMITS the PARTICIPATION of the SLAVES. – —

        Good 2 C U – -isonprize. Hope u had a nice day. :>)

Sometimes, regardless if you have a good point or not, you just need to keep some shit to yourself. Yet another example of elitist academic leftists that really need to just be quiet sometimes.

MSNBC host Chris Hayes apologizes for questioning use of term ‘heroes’ for fallen soldiers

NEW YORK — MSNBC host Chris Hayes says he’s sorry for his comments about his discomfort with the use of the word “heroes” to describe fallen soldiers.

Hayes made the comments during his show on Sunday, the day before Memorial Day. He was met with a strong backlash, including from a veterans’ group.

Hayes said he was “uncomfortable” with the word because it seemed like a rhetorical device that could justify engaging in more wars.

I kept seeing the commercial for it and totally forgot to check it out last night….what exactly is it about?

        • rikyrah

literally a dramatization of the Hatfields and the McCoys – Kevin Costner is in it

    • Ebogan63

See, this is why I dislike this fool intensely. He is such a cartoon version of a freaking liberal/leftist,with his disdain for the military, he would not have said that isht if it weren’t so. I’d like him to talk to some vets I know, and they could tell him what a freakin’ hero looks like.

It sho’ ain’t some ‘rhetorical device’ He can go straight to hell!

    • rikyrah

if someone chooses to put their life on the line for this country by joining the Armed Services and they get killed – they are a hero.

      Hayes can go f-himself.

    – –Vietnam War Marked on Memorial Day– –

    – – —This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. On Memorial Day, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta launched a national effort to commemorate the conflict in Southeast Asia.

President Obama delivered the keynote address at the ceremony held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall, which included speeches by Sec. Panetta, Chairman of Joints Chief of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey and former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), a Vietnam veteran. Actor Tom Sellick was Master of Ceremonies.

    – -The Vietnam 50th Anniversary Commemoration Program, which honors veterans and those missing-in-action as well military families on the home front, is a partnership between the Department of Defense and other federal agencies, veterans groups, state, local government and non-government organizations. The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act authorized the Secretary of Defense to initiate the commemoration program.

NOW: — – —Sunday Talkers Repeat Romney’s Line About Obama Not Understanding How the Economy Works – —

    – – – –Whether it was NBC’s Meet the Press, ABC’s This Week, CNN’s State of the Union, CBS’s Face the Nation or Fox News Sunday, no matter which of the Sunday bobble head shows you might have been watching this weekend, you heard one resounding theme from Republicans; Obama doesn’t understand how the economy works.

Mitt Romney has been using that attack on President Obama relentlessly in response the the attack ads criticizing his time at Bain Capital, which ABC opened up with, showing Romney on Fox and Friends repeating the line earlier this week.

I put together a mashup of the line being repeated endlessly by those acting as Romney surrogates this weekend (official or not), starting with George Will on This Week, Newt Gingrich and Carly Fiorina on Meet the Press, Rudy Giuliani on State of the Union, Brit Hume on Fox News Sunday and Ed Gillespie on Face the Nation.

Nicole was working on this same theme which she posted on this Sunday here: Got Talking Points?. My mashup I put together also included George Will:
