Monday Open Thread: African American Women Bandleaders

GOOD MONDAY MORNING, P.O.U.!

(Originally published on March 9, 2015)

Now when it comes to African American jazz bandleaders, the first names that come to mind are Duke Ellington, Count Bassie, Chick Webb and Cab Calloway. But let me tell ya, the sistas could swing, too! This week we’re gonna take a look at the Sistas of Swing — African American Women Bandleaders!

BLANCHE CALLOWAY

jazzband_blanche2

Blanche Calloway (February 9, 1902 – December 16, 1978) was an African-American jazz singer, composer, and bandleader. She was the older sister of Cab Calloway, and was a successful singer before her brother.[3] With a music career that spanned over fifty years, Calloway was the first woman to lead an all-male orchestra[1] and performed alongside musicians such as Cozy Cole, Chick Webb, and her own brother. Her performing style was described as “flamboyant” and a major influence on her brother’s own performance style.[3]

Early life

Blanche Dorothea Jones Calloway was born in Rochester, New York. When she was a teenager, the family, including her three younger siblings, moved to Baltimore, Maryland. Her father, Cabell, was a lawyer and her mother, Martha Eulalia Reed, was a music teacher. The family was described as being middle-class. Her father died in 1910, and her mother married insurance salesman John Nelson Fortune a few years later. The couple would have two more children.[1]

jazzband_blanchejoyboysCalloway’s mother was a major influence on her and her siblings passion for music. Aside from her and Cab, their brother Elmer would also go on to briefly pursue a musical career. Calloway’s mother made her take piano and voice lessons as a child, but never promoted the idea of a musical career for the young Calloway. Martha hoped that her daughter would pursue a “respectable” career, such as a teacher or nurse. Calloway dreamed of a musical career and was influenced as a youth by Florence Mills and Ida Cox. Her music teacher would encourage her to audition for a local talent scout and to her mother’s annoyance, Calloway dropped out of Morgan College in the early 1920s to seek out a career in music.[1]

Early professional career

Calloway made her professional debut in Baltimore in 1921 with Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle’s musical Shuffle Along.[1][2] Her big break came in 1923 on the national tour for Plantation Days, which featured her idol Florence Mills. The show ended in 1927 in Chicago, and Calloway decided to stay there, as it was the jazz capital of the world during the time. She became popular in the Chicago scene and would continue to tour nationally,[1] performing at New York’s Ciro Club in the mid-1920s. Shortly after her time at the Ciro Club, she moved to Chicago, Illinois. In 1925, she recorded two blues songs, which would be promoted as race records,[1] accompanied by Louis Armstrong and Richard M. Jones; the first inception of her Joy Boys orchestra.[1][2] During this decade, she would also perform with Rueben Reeves and record on Vocalion Records.[1]

jazzband_blanche_posterAt one point, she performed with her brother’s band[2] before going on to work with Andy Kirk’s orchestra, the Clouds of Joy, at the Pearl Theater[1] in Philadelphia in 1931 and recorded three songs, including a song she wrote which has been called her “trademark” song: “I Need Lovin”. While working with Kirk, Calloway failed to take over his orchestra, to serve as bandleader.[3] Despite her attempts to take over his band, she learned extensively about music management.[1]

She would go on to form another big band, Blanche Calloway and Her Joy Boys,[2] which included Ben Webster on tenor saxophone and Cozy Cole on drums.[3] This made her the first woman to lead an all-male jazz orchestra. This big band recorded four times in 1931 and once in 1934 and 1935, releasing recordings on RCA Victor.[1] The band would eventually change their name to Blanche Calloway and Her Orchestra and in 1933 the Pittsburgh Courier called Calloway and her orchestra one of the top ten outstanding African American orchestras.[1] During 1934 and 1935 she would record eight songs with this group, including songs such as “Just a Crazy Song”, “Make Me Know It”, “You Ain’t Livin’ Right”, and a remake of “I Need Lovin'”.[3] Calloway and Her Joy Boys performed heavily in New York City, including at the Lafayette Theatre, the Harlem Opera House, and the Apollo Theatre. A version of the Joy Boys would tour, featuring Cozy Cole still on drums, Bennie Moten, Andy Kirk, Chick Webb and Zack Whythe. She wrote a number of songs for the group, including “Rhythm of the River” and “Growling Dan”.[2]

Career struggles

She struggled in the racially segregated and male-dominated music industry of the period. As an African American performer she had to frequently play to segregated audiences. While on tour in 1936, she used the women’s bathroom at a gas station in Yazoo, Mississippi. In response, the police were called, an orchestra member was pistol whipped, and both he and Calloway were jailed for disorderly conduct and fined $7.50. While the two were in jail, another member stole the group’s money and abandoned the band in Mississippi. The musicians went their own separate ways and Calloway sold her yellow Cadillac for cash to leave the state.[1]

As a musician, Calloway had a reputation for being “exceptional”,[1] but was given few opportunities outside of being a singer or dancer due to gender roles of the time. Her flamboyant[1][3] and, at times, provocative lyrics, challenged the stereotypes of what a “respectful” female performer was. By the mid-1930s Calloway began to struggle to find bookings, just as her brother’s own career grew in popularity.[1]

Influence on Cab Calloway

Calloway was a major influence on her brother’s career and performance style. Her own performance style was lively, dramatic, and animated. She would teach her brother about performing, and the two would sometimes perform together as a brother and sister act. Calloway helped her brother get his first role on stage, in Plantation Days, when another cast member fell ill. She may have served as the influence for Cab’s signature “Hi De Ho” chant in his song “Minnie the Moocher”. He says he came up with the phrase when he forgot the words during a performance, but his sister had performed and recorded a song earlier in 1931 called “Just a Crazy Song”. In the song, Calloway opened it with her wailing “Hi Hi Hi, Ho De Ho De Ho”, with the backing band performing call and response. Another song of Calloway’s, “Growlin’ Dan”, tells the story of Minnie the Moocher and the King of Sweden, and also uses the phrase “Ho De Ho De Ho.” The two performers most likely collaborated and often borrowed from one another.[1]

Later career and life

Ms. Calloway in her later years

Ms. Calloway in her later years

After years of struggling for major success, in 1938 she declared bankruptcy and broke up her orchestra.[3] In 1940 she formed a short-lived all-women orchestra, feeding on the popularity of all-female bands during World War II. The band struggled to get bookings and soon disbanded after forming.[1] Calloway continued to sing on occasion and moved to a suburb of Philadelphia with her husband in the mid-1940s. There, she became a socialite and served as a Democratic committeewoman. She would eventually separate from her husband after discovering he was a bigamist.[1]

In the early 1950s she moved to Washington, D.C. where she managed a nightclub Crystal Caverns. Calloway would hire Ruth Brown to perform at the club, and would become Brown’s manager, who went on to credit Calloway with discovering her and helping her band land a record deal with Atlantic Records.[1] In the late 1950s she moved to Florida and became a DJ for WMBM in Miami Beach. Eventually, she became program director of the station,[3] and served in that role for 20 years before moving back to Baltimore.[2] While still in Florida, she became the first African American precinct voting clerk, and was the first African American woman to vote in Florida in 1958. She became an active member of the NAACP and the Congress of Racial Equality, also serving on the board of the National Urban League. In 1964, she and about forty other African American women protested with the NATO Women’s Peace Force at The Hague.[1]

Calloway would convert to Christian Science, and she credited the religion with helping her fight her 12 year battle with cancer.[1] Around 1968, she formed Afram House, Inc., a mail order cosmetics company for African Americans.[1][3] She eventually moved back to Baltimore, and married her high school sweetheart.[1] She died on December 16, 1978, from breast cancer, aged 76.[2]

Good morning POU Family. A few NFL week 1 thoughts.

    1) The Colts need to get it over with and fire Chuck Pagano… good lord.

    2) If Russell Wilson can’t get better protection than THAT….Mannnnnnnn.

    3) The Raiders are for real.

    4) The Giants need OBJ to get well soon.

And..after seeing of these bums playing QB Sunday… there’s no doubt that (A) Kap should be starting in the NFL and (B) Louisville’s Lamar Jackson has a place in the NFL.

    Have a great day family.

    • rikyrah

      Morning KennyM

I saw plenty of college QBs on Saturday that probably would look better on Sunday than half the ones I saw playing on Sunday.

      Morning Kennymack

The Colts from the front office on down should collectively hang their heads in shame. What I saw was pitiful.

I’m trying to keep my Raiders hopes in check, at least until Week 9. I’ve been burned so many times.

      • Kennymack1971

The AFC West is no joke but I like what I saw from the Raiders.

    • Imma need Cincinnati to also get it over with and fire Marvin Lewis.

      • Kennymack1971

Woody you ain’t lying. That’s another situation that’s gotten stale and Andy Dalton…OMG.

        • I thought last year but the Brown family being gluttons for punishment and cheap to boot decided otherwise.

    • lamh

I think the sun had set on Kaep playing in the NFL again.

Barring a few outspoken folks the NFL is getting no real blowback for its treatment of Kaep

at some point I wonder if Kaep will just say fuq em and takes his name out of contention?

hopefully if Kaep has been managing his money as well as Marshawn… he can tell NFL Fuq yall league

Trump promised not to work with foreign entities. His company just did
    SEPTEMBER 11, 2017 5:00 AM

A major construction company owned by the Chinese government was hired to work on the latest Trump golf club development in Dubai despite a pledge from Donald Trump that his family business would not engage in any transactions with foreign government entities while he serves as president.

Trump’s partner, DAMAC Properties, awarded a $32-million contract to the Middle East subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corporation to build a six-lane road as part of the residential piece of the Trump World Golf Club Dubai project called Akoya Oxygen, according to news releases released by both companies. It is scheduled to open next year.

Trump Has Nominated 42 US Attorneys So Far. Only One Is A Woman.

The numbers stand in contrast to the US attorneys that President Obama nominated after he took office in 2009. Of Obama’s first 42 nominees, 12 were women.
“It’s a slap in the face,” said Joyce Vance, a former US attorney in Alabama who was one of Obama’s early nominees in 2009, of Trump’s decision to nominate predominantly men. “It’s a statement that this is not a priority.”

Oh FFS… taking down memorials that honor the people who fought to preserve slavery isn’t anywhere in the same ballpark as memorials to 9/11…

Mayo Nation on one for real.

      • Town

No one except black people care about the slavery aspect, so saying the memorials need to be taken down because of slavery is a non-starter.

When somebody says the memorials need to be preserved & honored, we need to ask them are they commemorating and honor the United States of America or the Confederate States of America? Because these memorials are not there to remember American history, they’re there to remember CONFEDERATE history. So which side do they want to remember?

        • nathkatun7

Great points! Moreover, if all these statutes of confederates are about remembering history, why don’t we have statutes of King Goerge III (“America’s last King), and the British Generals, such as Henry Clinton and Charles Cornwallis, who fought to preserve British rule over what became the United States? Any one ever seen the statute of Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of Virginia, who freed the slaves who were willing to enlist in the British army? By the way, since when are the losers immortalized as part of remembering their roles in history?

      It was such a crock.

    • That’s some bullshit.

Maybe I’m unfair in feeling this way….I was watching the national anthem ceremony before the Giants/Dallas game last night, and I felt disgust towards the Black players who stood while the Anthem was played.

  • Another possible reason NFL ratings declined last season? Tooooo many commercials.

    • Miranda

And too many suck ass teams, which I’m seeing gonna be the situation this year too if the 1st games are any indication. The NBA ratings jumped through the roof because so many teams became so competitive (notwithstanding the warriors beatdown of the west in the playoffs LOL). The Christmas day ratings for the NBA games have surpassed the Thanksgiving day games for the NFL.

      • Thursday night game Texans vs Bengals. Like I’m going to switch over from Chopped.

        • Miranda

          LOLOL

        • MsKitty

I think there was maybe 1 or 2 competitive Thursday night games last season. All the others were clunkers.

    • MsKitty

NFL RedZone is what got me back into football, because the year before it was added to my channel lineup I hardly watched a game all the way through because I just couldn’t with the commercials. It was like, I’ll peek at the game for a few minutes in between binge watching the DVR. Even now, I have a hard time watching a “regular” game.

I remember how the GOP fought tooth and nail to prevent these responders from receiving federal benefits to help with the costs of their illnesses. The GOP loves memorials for 9/11 and waving flags and pretending to be patriotic…until it comes to actually paying those that sacrificed. Then it’s “who are you?”

You know what I’m tired of seeing is articles and calls for Michelle Obama to run for president. Like how many times does she have to say that she has no interest in running for office? She didn’t even want Barack to run initially. And why would she and her family want to go through all the hell they went through again when she and her family are finally free. Michelle and her girls are still being attacked and slandered by idiotic right wing racists so why go through that again. It really is annoying that people believe the Obamas owe this ungrateful racist country their time and attention, and that black people and in particular a black woman has to help clean up the messes of stupid white people in this country. Leave Michelle and the rest of the Obamas alone. Go find a good white person to run for president and clean up this mess.

    • Alma98

And what makes them think they’d vote for a black woman when they wouldn’t vote for a white one? Just stupid, leave the Obamas alone. They gave enough of their lives to this ungrateful country.

I’m just sayin’, how is Kylie selling “lip kits” when 3 years ago she didn’t even have any lips?

        • Kylie’s appeal is that she gives ugly ducklings hope.

          • BoomerGal

            LOL!!! You wrong!! LOL!!!

          • Town

Kylie looked like your average, every day, run of the mill basic white girl. Which isn’t bad but standing next to her sisters, she was the ugliest one and she knew that. So yeah, other average, basic white girls look at Kylie and say if she can glow up, I can too.

    • Town

I got the lip gloss (she only has one shade*), it’s very pretty and supposed to work on all skin tones. Everyone in the Sephora on Friday was around the Fenty Beauty display. I’m hesitant to try her foundation, only because I’ve heard its very mattifying and I have severely dry skin.

I’ve also heard it oxidizes so 1) don’t trust the lighting in Sephora, go outside and check it and 2) go up a shade because it does oxidizes. I’ve heard the foundation blends very well.

Everyone on YouTube seems to love the “Trophy Wife” highlighter.

*I’ KNOW Miss Rihanna is going to come out with a red lip shade, you can take that to the bank!

      • rikyrah

I watched a review from someone with oily skin who was semi -disappointed after half a day (loved it when she put it all on),but she thought that it would probably be fine for those with dry skin.

        Trophy Wife?

That got mixed reviews. Most thought that it was when you were going out and wanted to make a statement, but was inappropriate for everyday use.
Had one woman who ditched it as highlighter, but thought it looked great on the eyes.

        • Miranda

Yeah, regular women going to the office or behind the register at a retail store, where ever you are, shouldn’t have gold highlighted cheekbones (trophy wife) I don’t care how fly you think you are. LOL

          • Town

The problem with highlighter is it is supposed to be a subtle glow but people be packing it on looking like C3PO and what not.

        • Town

I’m not sure that a matte foundation would be fine for dry skin. You’ll be looking like you have on Cremation #6.

I’ll stick with the MUFE for right now. MAC needs to improve themselves too. Every black woman in America can’t be a NC45.

    • rikyrah

      wow.

      WOW.

Most of the youtube reviews that I watched were from the darker Sistas. I wanted to know if it was true that Rihanna had done well by them…and, all but one gave Rihanna’s line a positive review. And, even that negative review was only semi-negative.

The Real Reason the U.S. Has Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance

    excerpt:
Most insurance in the first half of the 20th century was bought privately, but few people wanted it. Things changed during World War II.

In 1942, with so many eligible workers diverted to military service, the nation was facing a severe labor shortage. Economists feared that businesses would keep raising salaries to compete for workers, and that inflation would spiral out of control as the country came out of the Depression. To prevent this, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9250, establishing the Office of Economic Stabilization.

This froze wages. Businesses were not allowed to raise pay to attract workers.

Businesses were smart, though, and instead they began to use benefits to compete. Specifically, to offer more, and more generous, health care insurance.

Rep. Dave Trott Announces Retirement — Third Swing-District Republican This Week

    Source: Talking Points Memo

By CAMERON JOSEPH Published SEPTEMBER 11, 2017 11:58 AM

Rep. Dave Trott (R-MI) is leaving Congress at the end of his term, he announced Monday morning, making him the third swing-district House Republican to declare his retirement in the past week alone.

Trott’s decision to leave is the latest sign that House Republicans are bracing for a brutal 2018 election — one that some of them aren’t so eager to face. And it opens up a competitive seat Democrats hope they can capture in a wave election.

President Trump won Trott’s suburban Detroit seat by 50% to 45%, about the same margin Mitt Romney carried it in 2008. But President Obama won it in 2008, and Democrats were already looking at Trott as a potential 2018 target.

“I have decided not to seek reelection in 2018. This was not an easy decision, but after careful consideration, I have decided that the best course for me is to spend more time with my family and return to the private sector,” Trott said in a statement.

Trump takes travel-ban exemption fight back to SCOTUS

    Source: Politico

By JOSH GERSTEIN 09/11/2017 12:22 PM EDT Updated 09/11/2017 12:26 PM EDT

The Trump administration is returning to the Supreme Court in an effort to overturn lower court rulings crimping the application of President Donald Trump’s travel ban executive order. Justice Department lawyers asked the high court Monday to allow authorities to keep up a block on many refugees covered by Trump’s ban.

However, the administration threw in the towel for now on efforts to insist that grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins of U.S. citizens should be covered by the ban despite the Supreme Court ordering an exemption for close family members.

A federal judge in Hawaii ruled against the federal government on both issues. Last week, a 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals panel declined to disturb that ruling.

The dispute taken to the justices Monday addresses how much of the travel ban can be enforced until the Supreme Court rules on the broader issues. The justices are scheduled to hear arguments Oct. 10 on a pair of cases related to the ban.

The wife kept saying throughout the show how terrified she was of snakes and gators. When the realtor showed the the second house there was a snake in the backyard and of course the woman flipped out, saying I can’t be here, I need to be somewhere with no snakes. I loved the realtor’s response (paraphrasing): Welcome to Florida, Ma’am. Snakes come with the territory, so you need to get past it.

I’m sorry, but I absolutely Do. Not. Believe. That real American Democrats are leading the attacks on Hillary. Never, in my 50+ years 1/?

    9:26 AM – 10 Sep 2017

    2. active in American politics, have I seen a party stridently attack
their own candidate, not even one who had lost fair and square,

    3. (which Hillary provably did not do) for writing a book after the
election. I don’t know who is leading this process, but I feel confident

    4. that whoever it is has money to make if Democrats fail to recover and become a governing majority. I will grant you that

    5. a mind-boggling percentage of Americans don’t have a clue how our Federal Government works or why we have one, but simple ignorance

    6. isn’t enough to explain the vitriol, the intensity, or the efficiency
of the attacks on Hillary, or on any other Democratic rising star,

    7. especially a female one.
Politicians write books and give speeches. They always have, or at least for all of my 70 years.

    8. This outpouring of hatred and rage is absolutely unprecedented. THIS IS NOT A COINCIDENCE. Nor an accident. Not this many people woke up

    9. one morning and said, The greatest outrage in my life today is that Hillary Clinton wrote a semi-tell-all political book.
    Bullshit. Not.

    10. Fake Democrats, fake Progressives, and real suckers have joined together to take down the candidate who got the most votes.

    12. Yes, I believe that real not-Republicans, by whatever title they
choose to call themselves, are gullible enough to fall for this shit,

    13. follow this shit, and perpetuate this shit, but I feel absolutely
certain that somewhere at the top, in Russia, or in an office run by

    14. somebody named Koch, or Mercer, or Karl Rove, or one of their ilk, there is a think group writing, spreading, observing the success of,

    15. all this anti-Hillary, anti-Kamala, and broad spectrum anti-Democratic propaganda.
It’s too good. It’s too effective. The timing is

    16. too perfect, and the coverage is too total, for it to be an accident. I choose to not refute the claims on a case-by-case basis, partly

i made a mistake yesterday in watching the original IT mini-series. time can cloud your memories.

except for tim curry and tim reid and maybe some moments with john ritter, the acting, the pacing, the directing, and the writing were horrible.

i expected the fx and the directing to be bad and pedestrian, since back then tv really was the red headed step-child, but i forgot how bad those mini-series used to be.

and man, after the kids past arc, shit was boring as hell and the acting dropped. having the night court judge yelling his unfunny lines and watching the actress playing the adult bev, emote via wide eye and slack jawed made it painful

if that mini-series was made today, i’m pretty sure they would have gotten a few movie actors that have crossed over in to tv or at least some folks and some writers that can do the job

now i most def have to see the movie

    • GOVCHRIS1988

Yeah, I always say the first part with the kids is the best part, hence the updated movie only focuses on them as kids.

Trump Inc: Inside the president’s not-so-blind trust

Trump’s run for president likely started,as a marketing pitch. The problem is, he won

    Michael Tanglis

Seven days after Donald Trump announced his intention to seek the highest office in the land, he formed more business entities than he had on any previous day, available information indicates. All the entities were related to Trump projects in Indonesia.

A few months later, Trump was joined on the campaign trail by a delegation of Indonesian politicians — who openly acknowledged they were there because of Trump’s investments in their country. One had previously been caught on tape soliciting a $4 billion bribe.

In total, Trump has formed at least 49 business entities since he
announced his bid for the presidency. He continued to form businesses not only after winning in November, but also after assuming the presidency in January.

A detailed examination of Trump’s financial disclosure forms, as well as Delaware and New York business filings, shows that Trump’s run for president likely began as more of a marketing pitch than a genuine attempt to become the leader of the free world. The problem is, he won. And it doesn’t appear his priorities have changed. He did virtually nothing to separate himself from his businesses. In 2016,Trump owned a direct stake in more than 380 business entities — and held an indirect stake in many more. After becoming president, he transferred those direct ownership stakes to six different entities, mostly Delaware holding companies. But the transfer of ownership was meaningless; a revocable trust that was created to benefit him — and that he can assume control of at any time — sits at the center of it all.

I’m seriously starting to wonder if this hatred of Hillary by the media isn’t some disease in their newsrooms. This is bizarre.

and declaring this less than mediocre white man as a genius too

      • Worldwatcher7

The media is allowing him to construct a mythology of himself as a political genius, in the face of his laughable failures.
