Monday Open Thread: Black Pirates

This week’s open threads will focus on a rarely known topic, black pirates.

Henri Caesar

Replica of what Henri Caesar could have possibly looked like…

Some estimate that nearly 5,000 pirates hunted prey between 1715 and 1726. Of that number, about twenty-five to thirty percent came from the cimarrons, black slaves who ran from their Spanish masters. Other blacks joined after pirates attacked slave ships. For example, when Sam Bellany and his fellow pirates seized a “Guinea Ship,” twenty-five blacks went on the account. Stede Bonnet’s crew also included former slaves and freemen, and of the eighty sea rovers who followed John Lewis were numbered at least forty blacks from English colonies. Francis Sprigg’s cook was black and entrusted with dividing the spoils equally for the crew.

Not all black pirates were known by name. For example, thirty men escaped enslavement on Saint Thomas and went on the account in August 1699. A mulatto amongst Stede Bonnet’s crew had a confrontation with a white sailor who refused to sign the articles of agreement. After cursing the man, the black pirate wondered “why I did not go to the pump and work among the rest, and told me that was my Business and that I should be used as a Negroe.” Captain Bonnet overheard the exchange and concurred with the pirate – a man was either a sea rover or a slave, regardless of his color or status.

In his article “Black Men under the Black Flag,” maritime historian Ken Kinkor includes a chart listing various pirate captains and how many blacks were members of their crews.

    • Samuel Bellamy (1717) – more than 27 out of 180 men

    • Edward England (1718) – less than 50 out of 180 men

    • Edward Lowther (1724) – 9 out of 23 men

    • Blackbeard (1717) – 60 out of 100; (1718) – 5 out 14

    • Oliver La Bouche (1719) – 32 out of 64 men

These five pirate crews are but a small sampling of those listed, and they indicate these men were active members of the crew. Sometimes, they were the most fearsome and most trusted of the pirates, the men who boarded prizes first. They did not, however, always receive the same punishment as other pirates when captured. Whereas their comrades often went to the gallows, black pirates were often returned to the men who owned them, or they were sold into slavery.

Henri Caesar  (fl. 1791-1830) was allegedly a 19th-century Haitian revolutionary and pirate. Efforts to find historical evidence of his existence have been unsuccessful. According to works of fiction, he was a participant in the Haitian Revolution under Dutty Boukmanand Toussaint Louverture as well as active in piracy for nearly a 30-year period during the early 19th century.

Henri Caesar was allegedly born to a slave family kept by a French plantation owner known as Arnaut. He worked as a houseboy on the estate and, as a young man, worked in the lumberyard. He was apparently mistreated by the supervisor and later killed the man during the slave insurrection, torturing him with a saw. Joining the rebel forces led by Dutty Boukman and Toussaint Louverture, he remained with the revolution until its independence from France in 1804, when he left to try his luck at sea. Based in Port-de-Paix, he captured a Spanish ship in 1805 and soon began attacking small villages and lone vessels near Cuba and the Bahamas. Adopting the name Black Caesar, he was very successful during his piratical career before his disappearance in 1830. Although his fate is unrecorded, he most likely fled the area after President Andrew Jackson ordered an expedition against pirates active on the Florida coast after its purchase by the United States in 1828. There is one story of his capture in west Florida and, taken to Key West, was tied to a tree and burned to death. The widow of a preacher, whose eyes had been burned out under torture from Black Caesar, had been used to light the fire.

He is supposed to have buried between $2 and $6 million at several locations throughout the Caribbean including Pine Island, White Horse Key, Marco Island, Elliot Key and Sanibel Island, although none has ever been recovered. He is said to have been associated with another pirate, Jose Gaspar or Gasparilla, however his existence is doubted among historians.

Good Morning POU. My internet was down last night, had to do some serious arguing with my provider. Yuck. They are coming today to check the problem. Hope everyone has a good one.

    • jds09

Good Morning CC and POU Fam! I dreamed about pirates last night (I was telling people how to dress as one), I wonder what that means. lol

      • Aquagranny911

This made me laugh. I had a dream about playing poker with an old boss of mine & some chicas I knew back in the day when we picked peaches for pesos. We cleaned the buzzard out. He wanted a do-over & actually pulled out a gun. I woke up.
What can I say? Yesterday’s music brought back some memories & I live in AZ.

    Good morning!

I’m currently obsessed with pirates (Black Sails, Once Upon A Time), so this topic is timely for me.

I love Toby Stephens [almost as much as I love his mum, Dame Maggie!] and have watched him in all kinds of dreck [plastic surgery that made a Chinese guy look like, well, him?] but cannot do the pirate thing for some reason.

Not to be out-idioted and out-eviled by its brother to the North, what South Carolina has done:

Despite the protests of faculty members, students, and officials of the NAACP, the governing board of the College of Charleston, in South Carolina, announced on Saturday that it had chosen the state’s lieutenant governor, Glenn F. McConnell, to become the college’s next president. The vote was unanimous, The Post and Courier, a newspaper in Charleston, reported.

Critics opposed Mr. McConnell’s candidacy because he had no academic experience and because of worries that his becoming president would hurt efforts to recruit minority students. A Republican and former head of the State Senate, Mr. McConnell has supported flying the Confederate battle flag on the Statehouse grounds and lists “reenacting civil war cannoneering” among his hobbies on the website of the office of lieutenant governor.

Some opposition to Mr. McConnell also stemmed from concerns for the future of the 244-year-old college as a public liberal-arts institution. Bills are pending in both houses of the state legislature to merge the college with the Medical University of South Carolina to create a comprehensive research university in Charleston. Faculty leaders and administrators of both institutions oppose the proposal.

While Mr. McConnell has not publicly championed such a merger, his candidacy did have strong support in the legislature, including from sponsors of the merger bills. He has said, however, that he does not expect a merger bill to pass this year, according to The State, a newspaper in Columbia, S.C. He said he would work instead to build the college into a full-fledged research university without the Medical University by seeking legislative approval for the college to offer doctoral degrees.

    • morphus

There is pattern where state legislators across the South cite funding shortages to propose mergers which consistently result in the elimination of options at institutions with a history of serving black students.

      • goldenstar

Could this possibly be instigated by ALEC?

        • Alma98

That’s what I was thinking goldenstar.
It seems like they’re get a foot hold in higher education too.

          • MsKitty

They already tried this here when they tried to “merge” Rutgers-Camden with Rowan University. Christie is in knee deep with the Koches and ALEC, but of course it’s Jersey so it was sleazed up a bit more with some of the Christie Dems in on it too.

        • morphus

ALEC Exposed created a list of ALEC education objectives. Placing individuals like McConnell without an academic background into key education positions is one of those objectives. Here’s a short list of other education targets: http://www.alecexposed.org/wiki/Privatizing_Public_Education,_Higher_Ed_Policy,_and_Teachers

          • conlakappa

Here’s the thing, as evil as ALEC is and the depth of its tentacles, there are problems at some HBCUs that are of the making of their administrations/trustees. Those things need to be addressed. Overpaying presidents while undergraduating students, for example.

          • morphus

No doubt there are managerial problems within some HBCU’s. Recently had opportunity to observe inner workings of a couple up close. One is in a state of chaos after a merger with a white institution. It seems other than claims there would be financial benefits no forethought went into internal fallout after merger similar to black neighborhood school closures/mergers.

          • goldenstar

            Thanks for this.

    • Admiral_Komack

McConnell is a important politician, so maybe that will help the school get money from the General Assembly.

And, he can play Confederate dress-up to his heart’s content.

  • TresL

Apparently Jimmy Kimmel has posted a selfie including him and the Clintons. There is nothing cool about that family or Jimmy Kimmel for that matter. These people are trying way too hard for me and discerning Democrats should be sick and tired of them by 2016. I know I am already.

    • Town

Jimmy Kimmel is crabby because he’s hungry and mad the Obamas stay on Jimmy Fallon. Eat a Snickers and have a seat.

      • AxelFoley

You’re saying he’s not him when he’s hungry?

In airwaves war, N.H. Democrats fret

Barrage of ads laying foundation for Brown
By Matt Viser | GLOBE STAFF MARCH 24, 2014

WASHINGTON — On New Year’s Eve, station managers at WMUR-TV in Manchester, N.H., received a request from a media buyer in northern Virginia: Americans for Prosperity, a nonprofit backed by the billionaires David and Charles Koch, wanted to buy some ads.

During the next week, nearly $120,000 worth of ads aired during commercial breaks of shows like “Ellen,” “The Bachelor,” and “Modern Family.”

The hard-hitting, 30-second spots were among the first in a wave to attack Senator Jeanne Shaheen, helping lay the groundwork for former Massachusetts senator Scott Brown to challenge the Democratic incumbent.

“Tell Senator Shaheen it’s time to be honest,” the ad said. “ObamaCare doesn’t work.”

Shaheen’s allies have fought back but, in a sign of potential trouble for the Democrat and her supporters, they have been overwhelmed by the opposition’s barrage, outspent by a margin of more than 4-to-1. The gap is already becoming a grave concern among state Democrats who fear that national party leaders are not making the race a priority.

    • jziglar

I’m so sick of the “sky is falling” any campaign that spends millions of dollars on ads in March doesn’t know how to run a proper campaign. They did the same shit in 2012 during the presidential election. And to be honest studies have shown that most people are tuning out political ads especially when it’s a barrage of the same stuff.

PRINCETON, NJ — Whites and nonwhites have long shown differing political party preferences, with nonwhites widely favoring the Democratic Party and whites typically favoring the Republican Party by at least a small margin. In recent years, however, the margins in favor of the Republican Party among whites have been some of the largest.

In D.C. mayor’s race, Vincent Gray has secret weapon: Support of growing ex-prisoner vote
By Aaron C. Davis, Published: March 22 E-mail the writer

Above an official portrait of Mayor Vincent C. Gray, crisp silver lettering spells out a welcome to one of the shiniest new places in D.C. government — the Office on Returning Citizen Affairs.

And on a flier lying nearby: “YOU CAN LEGALLY VOTE!”

The bustling facility is designed solely for convicted criminals, a center for training, job placement, housing services and other programs for a slice of the population growing by thousands each year. Ex-offenders account for at least one in 10 D.C. residents and perhaps many more.

That makes them a potentially pivotal, if uncertain, voting bloc — and a highly coveted target that no political campaign has ignored in the tightening April 1 Democratic primary for mayor.

Malaysia Airlines Sends Condolences Via Text Message

The search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has been brought to an end after satellite data revealed its last location in a remote part of the Indian Ocean.

Following Malaysian Prime Minister somber Najib Razak’s announcement today, Malaysia Airlines sent this text message to the family members of the MH370 passengers.

“Malaysia Airlines deeply regrets that we have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board survived. As you will hear in the next hour from Malaysia’s Prime Minister, we must now accept all evidence suggests the plane went down in the Southern Indian Ocean.”

    – —President Obama orders increase in special forces to hunt Joseph Kony– –

    – – – – –The U.S. is sending military aircraft as well as an increased number of special operations forces to Uganda to assist in the search for fugitive African warlord Joseph Kony.

The White House confirmed early Monday the U.S. is sending “a limited number” of CV-22 Osprey, refueling aircraft and “associated support personnel” to assist local forces in their long-running battle against Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army, or LRA. President Barack Obama sent about 100 U.S. troops to help the African forces in 2011.

National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said early
Monday the additional support would enable the African Union “to conduct targeted operations to apprehend remaining LRA combatants.”

    – —Obama: Russia will ‘pay a price’

    – – – —President Obama vowed Russia would “pay a price” for its annexation of Crimea as he kicked off a week of talks with European leaders focused largely on the crisis in Ukraine.
    – – – -“Europe and America are united in our support of the Ukrainian
government and Ukrainian people,” Obama said. “We are united in imposing a cost on Russia for its actions so far.”

The president and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte briefly addressed the press following bilateral talks and a tour of the Rijksmuseum, the Netherlands’ national art museum.

Obama noted that he and other leaders of the G-8 — minus representatives from the Kremlin — will meet later Monday, and are expected to consider permanently expelling Russia from the economic group. The world leaders are also expected to discuss additional economic penalties for Russia in response to its aggression in the region.

“Prime Minister Rutte rightly pointed out yesterday the growing sanctions would bring significant consequences to the Russian economy,” Obama said. “And I’ll be meeting with my fellow G-7 leaders later today, and we’ll continue to coordinate closely with the Netherlands and our European partners as we go forward.”

  • MsKitty

When you’re POTUS you don’t have to worry about waiting in long lines to get into a museum. Just have them open it for you on the day they’re usually closed.

Japan to Let U.S. Assume Control of Nuclear Cache

THE HAGUE — Japan will announce Monday that it will turn over to Washington more than 700 pounds of weapons-grade plutonium and a large quantity of highly enriched uranium, a decades-old research stockpile that is large enough to build dozens of nuclear weapons, according to American and Japanese officials.

The announcement is the biggest single success in President Obama’s five-year-long push to secure the world’s most dangerous materials, and will come as world leaders gather here on Monday for a nuclear security summit meeting. Since Mr. Obama began the meetings with world leaders — this will be the third — 13 nations have eliminated their caches of nuclear materials and scores more have hardened security at their storage facilities to prevent theft by potential terrorists.

Gov. Rick Scott’s finance co-chair exits amid campaign turmoil

In a campaign shakeup, Gov. Rick Scott’s top fundraiser — billionaire healthcare CEO Mike Fernandez — abruptly quit his post late Thursday after weeks of behind-the-scenes disagreements.

Fernandez said he was quitting to spend more time with his family and businesses. And he praised Scott’s campaign in a letter to the campaign’s leadership team.

“Together, we have helped the Governor raise more than $35 million. This has been an unprecedented effort, which is only matched by our shared commitment to reelect our Governor this November,” Fernandez’s letter said.

“I am proud of the team the Governor has put together, and I am confident that we are on course for victory,” he wrote in the letter, released by Scott’s campaign.

Despite the praise, Fernandez has been unhappy for weeks with the struggling campaign’s direction and and the attitude of some of its workers.

Fernandez began expressing his frustrations at least a month ago when he sent an email to top Scott allies and complained about two campaign aides who had joked around in a cartoon-style Mexican accent en route to a Mexican restaurant in Fernandez’s home town of Coral Gables.

Fernandez, who is Cuban, wouldn’t comment about the email.

Florida Democratic Party spokesman Joshua Karp: “With his pay-to-play tactics exposed, the turmoil in Rick Scott’s campaign has become impossible to hide … After giving Mike Fernandez over $1 billion in state contracts, Rick Scott thought he had found his money man for 2014. But sunshine is the best medicine, and with their relationship exposed, it was only a matter of time before Mike Fernandez had to leave Scott’s campaign.” http://www.sunshinestatenews.com/blog/rick-scotts-finance-co-chair-calls-it-quits

Height, president of the National Council of Negro Women for more than three decades, organized a successful drive to place a statue of Mary McLeod Bethune in a Districtof Columbia park. Once erected, the statue became the first of an African American in a public park in Washington, D.C.

    – – —EARLY YEARS:- –

    — —Born on March 24, 1912, in Richmond, Virginia, African-American activist Dorothy Height spent her life fighting for civil rights and women’s rights. The daughter of a building contractor and a nurse, Height moved with her family to Rankin, Pennsylvania, in her youth. There, she attended racially integrated schools.

In high school, Height showed great talent as an orator. She also became socially and politically active, participating in anti-lynching campaigns. Height’s skills as a speaker took her all the way to a national oratory competition. Winning the event, she was awarded a college scholarship.

At the first assembly after the edict, when the accompanist began the Rankin alma mater, the students refused to sing. The pianist began twice more; still the students were silent. Finally, the exasperated principal motioned Dorothy to the stage. The student body rose en masse, and a chorus split the air.

    — – – – – As a student she proved to be exceptional. In addition to excelling at academics, she won several speech contests and had a passion for music, even cowriting the alma mater for her high school. She graduated from Rankin High School in June of 1929,. .

We provided counseling, support groups & other services. We saw way better outcomes for these clients than we did for those we had who had done prison time & were on parole in barely adequate “halfway house” placement.

Our diversion clients mostly kept their jobs often with some moral support from their employers. Their families stayed more involved. They seemed to have a much better chance than those who had gone to prison, lost pretty much everything & had a more defeatist attitude.

GOP’s ObamaCare fixation knows no bounds
    Posted: 10:31 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2014
    By Jay Bookman

“Let me tell you what we’re doing (about Obamacare),” Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens bragged to fellow Republicans back in August: “Everything in our power to be an obstructionist.”

At the time, the comments seemed over the top even for Republicans. Opposing the law politically was one thing; actively sabotaging the ability of Georgians to benefit from a program that they were helping to pay for was something else entirely. Hudgens himself seemed embarrassed by his words, confessing later that “I guess my mouth got away from me.”

Seven months have passed since then, seven months in which the GOP’s obsession with Obamacare has become even deeper and more passionate. And judging from the actions of the 2014 General Assembly, an embarrassing example of individual extremism back in August has by March become the official position of the Georgia Republican Party.

House Republicans Declare That the American People Will Have No New National Parks

[….] The idea that an African American President dared follow the example of every president since Teddy Roosevelt and use the Antiquities Act of 1906 to protect iconic American places such as the Statue of Liberty and Grand Canyon was, as Utah Mormon Rob Bishop claimed, Barack Obama’s way of “punking” the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. It is noteworthy that Republicans have never accused any white president of punking the House by protecting federal land, but they have also never accused white presidents of dictatorial tyranny or shredding the Constitution by issuing executive orders either; something the Antiquities Act grants all presidents to protect Federal lands.[….]

The Republicans scheduled the vote to put a stop to the President designating national parks and federal lands for protection to coincide with his establishment of monuments honoring African Americans Harriet Tubman and Colonel Charles P. Young exactly one year ago. Republicans are being proactive to prevent the President from protecting national sites that honor some of Republicans’ most despised Americans including women, Latinos, African Americans, the LGBT community, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and other communities that are under-represented by national parks and monuments.[….]

Congressman Steps Up Attack On Koch Brothers For Detroit Petcoke Pollution

[….] On Friday, Rep. Gary Peters scheduled an event near the area of the Detroit river where large piles of petroleum coke — the black, dusty byproduct of tar sands oil — once stood. Peters reportedly scheduled the event to tie the existence of those piles to both the Kochs and Republican opponent Terri Lynn Land, and announce an endorsement from the League of Conservation Voters[….]

City residents were so angered by piles of petroleum coke, or “petcoke,” that were illegally stored along the Detroit River last year that then-Mayor Dave Bing demanded the piles be transported away. The company that stored the piles, Detroit Bulk Storage, is currently appealing Bing’s decision in court, arguing that they have the right to store those piles along the river.

Though Detroit Bulk Storage stored the petcoke, the petcoke itself was owned by Koch Minerals LLC. Detroit Bulk Storage has confirmed that it was storing it on behalf of Koch.[….]

‘Boyz N the Hood’ director: Hollywood liberals afraid to ‘let black people tell the stories’

[….] “There’s no Stephanie Allains,” Singleton said, referring to the executive who oversaw the production of Boyz N the Hood. “Stephanie Allain kicked and screamed to get Boyz n the Hood made. Those people don’t exist anymore, whether or not they’re black, white, or whatever. So we’re not going there. What doesn’t exist is financial infrastructure for people, and not necessarily black, but just people of different visions, to be able to do different types of work.” He did praise some of the work being made outside of the studio system, noting that “films are being made outside of the certain norm, people are putting in and financing.

That’s a liberating thing. You’re going to get different types of stories made. A good example of a person who happens not to be black, Benh Zeitlin who did Beasts of the Southern Wild, that would never have been made if it hadn’t been made in that model. That could never have been made in the studio. 12 Years a Slave could never have been made in the studio model.” Singleton recalled a realization he had when writing Boyz N the Hood: “I learned that no one was going to write the films I wanted to do except for me. No one was going to have the vision to tell the stories that I wanted to tell except for me.”[….]

This is why I give props to Tyler Perry. He didn’t sit around and wait for somebody else to build that infrastructure or go to bat for him. He did it himself. Either pool your resources, build contacts to the money people or do both. I guarantee you we will see this same article next year with a different name attached to it.

Even Spike Lee has said eff it and has gone the Kickstarter route for his movies. Can’t wait for Hollywood to give it to you, and even if they do you’re on borrowed time because you’re just a flavor of the month (see Blaxploitation Movies 1970s, Urban Dramas 1990s).

        • Exactly. I remember reading about this in the 90’s in People Magazine.

Look everybody has a sob story about how Hollywood wouldn’t let them do this or that dating back to Erich Von Stroeheim. They’re leery who they shell out money too and we’re on that list. Fine. By now Singleton should have figured out to look elsewhere. If you’ve only made two feature films in the past 9 years then the handwriting on the wall should have been decoded by now.

What to Expect From Starbucks’s New Booze Menu

The coffee chain plans to roll out alcoholic beverages to thousands of stores over the next few years as part of a program it calls Starbucks Evenings, which starts after 4 p.m. A few things for consumers to note: The options will be bottled beer or wine, not cocktails, and the selection will vary to meet “local taste preferences.” The evening program has already been tested at select locations in Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Portland, Ore., and Washington, D.C.[….]

The wine selection is fairly diverse for a coffee-focused cafe. The menu in Chicago, for example, features nine wines: prosecco, pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, brachetto (a sparkling rosé), pinot noir, malbec, chianti, and cabernet sauvignon. The Seattle menu has 10 options, including a syrah and a riesling. Atlanta’s has two red blends.[…]
