About That Rand Paul CPAC Straw Poll…

So Rand Paul easily won this year’s CPAC straw poll, but as to why, well…

Rand Paul handily won the presidential straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday, one gauge of the Republican base’s mood less than two years before the 2016 primary season kicks off.

The Kentucky senator received 31 percent, far ahead of second place Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who received 11 percent. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson finished third with 9 percent, ahead of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who received 8 percent.

The announcement came at the end of the group’s annual three-day confab. Organizers said that 2,459 attendees voted on computer kiosks.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum tied for fifth place, with 7 percent.

Certainly seems like there’s an overwhelming favorite in the 2016 race for the GOP, right?

Minnesota Lawmaker Accused Of Racism For Linking NBA Athletes To Street Crime

    Rep. Pat Garofalo @PatGarofalo

Let’s be honest, 70% of teams in NBA could fold tomorrow + nobody would notice a difference w/ possible exception of increase in streetcrime
    7:33 PM – 9 Mar 2014

But the Republican lawmaker denied to Minneapolis TV station KARE that the tweet was racially charged.

“I was talking about the NBA’s high arrest rate,” Garofalo told the news station.

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/minnesota-rep-nba-streetcrime

I follow the NBA pretty closely and I’m hard pressed to think of any widespread criminal activity that’s occurred in decades and even then.

So what’s he talking about? Who’s getting arrested?

    • MsKitty

Why not use the NFL as an example, as there’s players being arrested on the regular (3 on the Baltimore Ravens in the last month alone)? Oh, but I just remembered there’s a lot more white players in that league than the NBA. My bad.

Bush’s Defense Secretary Destroys GOP Talking Points Against Obama’s Handling Of Crimea
—-Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates pushed back on Sunday against conservatives who’ve blamed President Obama’s “weak” foreign policy for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Crimea.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Gates dismissed arguments that Obama’s handling of the conflict in Syria or his efforts to trim the defense budget emboldened Putin, arguing that the Russian president also invaded Georgia during the George W. Bush administration.

“My own view is, after all, Putin invaded Georgia when George W. Bushwas president. Nobody ever accused George W. Bush of being weak or unwilling to use military force,” Gates, who served as Defense Secretary for Presidents George W. Bush and Obama said. “So I think Putin is very opportunistic in these arenas. I think that even if — even if we had launched attacks in Syria, even if we weren’t cutting our defense budget— I think Putin saw an opportunity here in Crimea, and he has seized it.” Earlier this week, Gates told the Washington Post that the GOP lawmakers should “tone down” their criticism and “try to be supportive of the president rather than natter at the president.”
    – – – –SNIP — –

During his appearance, Gates also dismissed criticism of Obama’s weekend vacation. “I’ve seen this happen year after year, president after president. President takes a day or two off and plays golf. Doesn’t matter whether it’s President Obama or the first President Bush going fishing. I think you’ve got to give these guys a little time off, you know, mostly they are working 20 hours a day.”

Wouldn’t it be nice if Cosmos succeeds and sparks the other networks to “copycat” by launching their own intelligent, scientific series? It seems the success of Scandal led to the NBC show, Deception, with Meagan Good as lead (now cancelled), Sleepy Hollow with Nicole Behaire and it looks like CBS is going to try its luck with Halle Berry in Extant.

I would love to see the end of most reality TV and low-brow sit-coms.
Now, all we need is for one network to find success practicing journalism so the others will follow.

    • conlakappa

You probably had the network executives nodding their heads in agreement until that last bit! I caught part of Broadcast News yesterday. Chillingly prophetic.

    • Alma98

I see some nerds are already whining.
      I hope in exceeds wildly.

      • Scopedog

Why are they whining? I mean….the original COSMOS–and this one–are aimed at the “everyman”, to let them know about the wonders of science.

But then again, some nerds–or rather, geeks– tend to look down on the average Joe, sadly. Or maybe they’ve got a problem with the show being hosted by a Black man who’s waaaaaaayyyy smarter than they will ever be?

And it’s been 34 years since Sagan’s original series. Science has come a long way since then–we’ve discovered things and invented technologies that were only theories in 1980. Of course the time is right for a new COSMOS.

        • Alma98

I think it’s all of the above Scopedog.

    • Alma98

I see some nerds are already whining.
      I hope in exceeds wildly.

    • qosine

      That would be so fantastic.
Reality TV and low-brow sit-coms can go now.
Yesterday, I pulled up a 1981 NYT article about
AIDS. I was floored at the tone and style — very
      evenhanded, carefully sourced, and moderate.
This is aside from the appalling sidestepping of
      AIDS and people with AIDS.

      • Scopedog

And it’s a far cry from journalism today, where you have, well, charlatans like Greenwald, instant postings without fact-checking, and an over-reliance on Wikipedia….and also a refusal to actually go and find the damned facts, and that yes, somethings you will have to go back farther than two years to when it comes to getting facts for an article.

The Health and Human Services inspector general (IG) will launch an investigation into the failed ObamaCare exchange in Maryland, Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) announced Monday.

“Maryland officials ignored early warning signs and chose to waste and abuse federal taxpayer money by opening up what they knew was a flawed exchange to the public,” he wrote in a statement.

“I have confidence that the nonpartisan and independent HHS Inspector General will thoroughly investigate and bring to light how hundreds of millions of dollars were wasted on one of the worst exchange roll outs in the country,” he added.

An official with the HHS inspector general’s office did not return a request for confirmation.

Ahhhhh….beautifulHigh School Wrestler Brings Crowd to Tears in Classy Move After Loss (video)

Malik Stewart, a Minnesota high school wrestler, shows the crowd the true definition of a champion.
    Posted: March 10 2014 7:50 AM

A Minnesota high school wrestler showed the crowd the true meaning of a champion after a tough loss in the state championship match, news station KARE 11 reports.

After losing the title to Mitchell McKee, Malik Stewart went over and embraced McKee’s father, Steve, who is battling terminal cancer.

“I got a little teary because I lost the match, and I knew the hard times he was going through,” Malik told the news station.

“The crowd went wild and I heard a couple people say after I did it, that was pretty classy, but I just did it straight from the heart.”

Malik knew the enormity and the importance of Mitchell McKee’s victory, who had vowed to win a state championship to honor his father. Malik lost his father to a heart attack when he was only 7.

“It was a big match for him and to be able to hug my dad like that and not be mad and storm off like a lot of kids do,” Mitchell said. “Really respectful.”http://www.theroot.com/articles/culture/2014/03/high_school_wrestler_brings_crowd_to_tears_in_classy_move_after_loss.html?wpisrc=topstories

Dems see healthcare opening on Medicaid

    By Jonathan Easley
    ..

States run by Republican governors and legislatures are slowly adopting the Medicaid expansion under ObamaCare, boosting Democratic hopes they can run on the issue in the midterm elections.

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) has launched a petition on her website urging Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.) to agree to the expansion, which she argues would bring health insurance to more people who cannot afford it.

The issue is giving Landrieu a chance to run not only against her GOP opponent Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who opposes the extension, but against Jindall as well. She argues the expansion would close “the Jindal Gap.”

“Our governor may not like the president, but this is not about the president,” she writes. “It’s about providing health coverage for 240,000 Louisianans who work 40 or 50 hours a week, but still make too little to qualify for assistance in the new marketplace — and too much to qualify for Louisiana’s current Medicaid.”

“the Jindal Gap.” — GREAT move, Sen. Landrieu

She’s following the PBO playbook of “strategic intervention” for a) Dem candidates in red states
      b) folks not signing up for Medicaid aren’t punishing PBO, but your families.

Fantastic use of pronouns to group people — isolating Jindal as the cause of hard working people left out of BOTH Obamacare and LA’s current Medicaid.

    Liberty, Equality, Efficiency

    MARCH 9, 2014

Most people, if pressed on the subject, would probably agree that extreme income inequality is a bad thing, although a fair number of conservatives believe that the whole subject of income distribution should be banned from public discourse. (Rick Santorum, the former senator and presidential candidate, wants to ban the term “middle class,” which he says is “class-envy, leftist language.” Who knew?) But what can be done about it?

The standard answer in American politics is, “Not much.” Almost 40 years ago Arthur Okun, chief economic adviser to President Lyndon Johnson, published a classic book titled “Equality and Efficiency: The Big Tradeoff,” arguing that redistributing income from the rich to the poor takes a toll on economic growth. Okun’s book set the terms for almost all the debate that followed: liberals might argue that the efficiency costs of redistribution were small, while conservatives argued that they were large, but everybody knew that doing anything to reduce inequality would have at least some negative impact on G.D.P.

But it appears that what everyone knew isn’t true. Taking action to reduce the extreme inequality of 21st-century America would probably increase, not reduce, economic growth.

    Let’s start with the evidence

    The right’s new clothes
    By E.J. Dionne Jr.,

Are conservatives interested in new ideas, or are they merely infatuated with the idea of new ideas? Are they really reappraising their approach, or are they trying to adjust their image just enough to win elections?

One way to look at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference is as a face-off between the “No Surrender” cries of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and the “Let’s Try to Win” rhetoric of such politicians as Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis). Seen in this light, Republicans truly are having the internal debate that Ryan called “messy,” “noisy” and “a little bit uncomfortable.”

But Ryan may have revealed more than he intended when he downplayed conservative divisions. “For the most part,” Ryan insisted, “these disagreements have not been over principles or even policies. They’ve been over tactics.”

In which case, this is not an argument over ideas at all, but a discussion of packaging.

Christie was quite direct on this point. “We don’t get to govern if we don’t win,” he said. “Let us come out of here resolved not only to stand for our principles. Let’s come out of this conference resolved to win elections again.”

Black Twitter growing into online force
    By JESSE J. HOLLAND — Mar. 10, 2014 11:04 AM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The hashtag gave it away.

When a Florida jury convicted Michael Dunn of attempted murder, but
not actual murder, in the shooting death of black teenager Jordan Davis, the hashtag #dangerousblackkids popped up on Twitter. Users posted photos of black babies and toddlers, spoofing the fear that Dunn
testified he felt before opening fire on a car full of teens at a
    convenience store.

That hashtag was the calling card of Black Twitter, a small corner of
the social media giant where an unabashedly black spin on life gets
    served up in 140-character installments.

Black Twitter holds court on pretty much everything from President
Barack Obama to the latest TV reality show antics. But Black Twitter can also turn activist quickly. When it does, things happen — like the
cancellation of a book deal for a juror in the George Zimmerman trial,
or the demise of Zimmerman’s subsequent attempt to star at celebrity
    boxing.

Catchy hashtags are a hallmark and give clues that the tweeting in question is a Black Twitter thing.

“It’s kind of like the black table in the lunchroom, sort of, where
people with like interests and experiences, and ways of talking and
communication, lump together and talk among themselves,” said Tracy
Clayton, a blogger and editor at Buzzfeed known on Twitter as
    @brokeymcpoverty.

      • Mi

Nothing is sacred to a lot of these folks. They’ll sacrifice their souls and their mothers for the klieg lights. But then again look who a lot of these people are. In reality, they’re mostly shallow, mediocre wannabes, desperate for validation, entry and acceptance into what they perceive as the elite circle. A world they’re certain signifies that one has arrived. What’s lost on them is that the people who set up and occupy these circles have no respect for them. They’ll exploit and humor them of course. They’ll even retain one or two of them for diversity (if they absolutely have to) but in the end, the contempt and disregard for them remains. Their value, ability and intelligence will always be questioned. They’ll never be good enough no matter how often they sell their souls or what trade secrets they have on offer.

        • qosine

          Perfectly said, Mi.

There’s something very nervy about having Jullian Assange and Snowden treated as VIP’s and glorified at SXSW. The sad thing is that as seemingly savvy and astute as the very sly and narcissistic Assange appears, the equally narcissistic but un-savvy Snowden is obviously way over his head, relying only on his basic pedestrian  Emo-Libertarian platitudes, which soon won’t be enough to sustain his cheerleaders. I also don’t know what the deal is, but I think it was very disrespectful of George Clooney to take his flavor of the month who just happens to be Jullian Assange and Edward Snowden’s attorney, to the White House screening of Monuments Men. It’s not like she just happened to be around. He had her flown in from London. Not impressed with this behavior on Clooney’s part. Even if Clooney is friends with President Obama, it’s disrespectful to President Obama in his capacity as Commander in Chief. Unless of course the attorney girlfriend is a mole and working for us.

The business dealings of Mr. Samson and his law firm, Wolff & Samson, have come under intense scrutiny as a result of the politically charged closing of access lanes to the George Washington Bridge in September and the scandal that ensued. The lane closings are the subject of a separate inquiry by federal prosecutors in New Jersey, who are examining the roles of several current and former aides and allies of Mr. Christie.

Notorious Florida Prosecutor Leads The State In Death Sentences Against Black Men

BY NICOLE FLATOW ON MARCH 10, 2014 AT 1:06 PM

State prosecutor Angela Corey has become notorious in Florida for being “tough on crime,” except when she isn’t. Her unsuccessful prosecution of George Zimmerman for the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was blasted for overlooking several key arguments andstrategies. But she successfully secured a 20-year prison sentence for Marissa Alexander for firing a warning shot during an altercation with her abusive husband. When that was overturned by an appeals court, she fought Alexander’s release pending trial, and sought three 20-year sentences on retrial. And she has vigorously defended charging juveniles as adults — even coercing teens into plea deals with the threat of charging them as an adult if they do not submit to juvenile detention.

A new report by the Florida Times-Union finds that she has also sent far more defendants to death row than any other Florida prosecutor. Since 2009, Corey has secured 21 death sentences, 14 involving African American defendants. Three escaped execution on appeal, but 18 others remain on death row. This is more than twice the number of death row cases in the next-highest district during the same period, while many have sought the death penalty in not a single case during those years.

And it’s not proportional to the number of murders in Corey’s district. Between 2009 and 2012 (the last year for which statistics were available), Corey’s district was responsible for 32 percent of the death row sentences but just 8 percent of the state’s murders, according to statistics provided to ThinkProgress by the American Civil Liberties Union. Miami-Dade County, for example, saw more than twice as many murders during that period, but that jurisdiction’s district attorney has only put 5 people on death row since 2009.

In fact, one of the counties in Corey’s district — Duval County — is one of ten in the countrywith the highest death row rate. A report by the Death Penalty Information Center released last fall found that these ten counties — while comprising just two percent of the U.S. population — account for the majority of U.S. executions. The report noted the relationship between arbitrary factors such as what county you live in and imposition of the cruel and increasingly unusual punishment of death. Another arbitrary factor that has tainted death sentences for years is their racial disproportion. In Corey’s district, 66 percent of death row inmates are African American, while they make up just 16 percent of the state’s population, according to ACLU statistics.

Public defender shortages and paltry budgets likely create the illusion of Corey’s “success” rate. The Florida Council on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys was formed a few back to address disparities in sentencing.

After all, Bart Gellman is still cranking out pieces for the Washington Post and praising Snowden to the nines.

Now, in Russia, it’s a different story. Seventeen-plus journalists dead since 2000, and they were reporting on corruption in that country. Yet that fact doesn’t even bring a whiff of concern from the emo.
