Monday Open Thread: Game Changers – Elite Black Quarterbacks

Russell Wilson’s family tree is rooted in special. His grandfather was president of Norfolk State University, and his grandmother was a college professor. His uncle went to Harvard Law School and is an accomplished Washington attorney, and his father studied law at the University of Virginia and practiced in Richmond.

Wilson attended the Collegiate School in Richmond and N.C. State and played football and baseball. Several members of his family had competed collegiately, including his father, Harrison Wilson III, who played football and baseball at Dartmouth. In fact, Harrison III attended training camp and played in the 1980 preseason with the San Diego Chargers, reportedly one of the last players cut.

On June 8, 2010, Wilson was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft. On June 9, Harrison Wilson III died of complications from diabetes.

Following Wilson’s junior season, Wolfpack Coach Tom O’Brien asked Wilson to focus more on football than baseball. Wilson wasn’t ready and thought he’d have to leave football behind entirely. Because Wilson had already completed his undergraduate degree, he was able to transfer without sitting out a year. N.C. State granted Wilson his release, and needing a quarterback, Wisconsin called shortly thereafter.

Wilson learned the Badgers’ playbook in just a couple of weeks and was named captain within a month.  At Wisconsin,  he set the single season FBS record for passing efficiency (191.8) and led the team to a Big Ten title and the 2012 Rose Bowl.

In April 2012, the Seahawks chose Wilson in the third round, the first quarterback drafted by Coach Pete Carroll and General Manager John Schneider.Wilson tied Peyton Manning’s NFL record for touchdowns by a rookie (26) and finished the season with a passer rating of 100, fourth in the NFL.  Wilson led the Seahawks to the divisional round of the NFL playoffs and was voted the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year.

Wilson finished the 2013 season with 26 touchdown passes, 9 interceptions, and a 101.2 passer rating, becoming the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to post a 100+ passer rating in each of his first 2 seasons. Wilson was named to his second Pro Bowl on December 27, 2013.

On January 19, 2014, Wilson and the Seahawks defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, 23–17, sending the Seahawks to Super Bowl XLVIII. Wilson threw for 206 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions for a 123.1 passer rating in the 43-8 defeat over the Denver Broncos. He became  the 2nd black starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl, joining Super Bowl XXII winner Doug Williams.

    Thank you for this.

Maybe the reporter who badgered…um, interviewed Bode Miller will go to the White House Press Corpse.

    • Lisa M

Yeah, I changed the channel!! I thought it was too much. To his credit, Bodie Miller was gracious in his tweets regarding the interview.

I saw Bode trending on twitter and wondered what it was. Saw the interview. The ethics of reporters these days is at an all time low. They’re all just paparazzi now.

Sen. Mike Lee Brazenly Lies and Claims That President Obama is Violating the Constitution
    By: Jason Easley
    Sunday, February, 16th, 2014, 4:36 pm

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) misled the American people on how their government works today, so that he could lie by claiming that President Obama is violating the Constitution.

Sen. Lee has embraced two lies. The first lie is that the president is acting in an unconstitutional manner. The president’s constitutional duty is to faithfully implement the laws that are passed by Congress. In 1984, the Supreme Court ruled that the executive branch has flexibility on implementation dates. The D.C. circuit court has also ruled that delays in implementation must be reasonable. Implementation can’t be delayed forever, but the executive branch does have the power to delay implementing legislation.

The second lie that Lee embraced that is Congress has no power to stop the president. Congress has the power to impeach President Obama is he is violating the constitution. The problem for Republicans is that the president is not violating the constitution.

Congressional Republicans could take President Obama to court, but they would have to argue in favor of implementing the employer mandate. Lee’s point about congressional Republicans not having standing in court was a bit of baloney. The truth is that Republicans don’t want to argue in favor of implementing an employer mandate that they have been demonizing for years.

    http://www.politicususa.com/2014/02/16/sen-mike-lee-brazenly-lies-claims-president-obama-violating-constitution.html

    • Guns3000

“Congress has the power to impeach”

Impeachment is their strategy. I don’t think people understand the importance of holding the Senate. The Repubs will go for impeachment if they are a majority in the Senate.

      • rikyrah

        uh huh
        uh huh

      • JojoRaze

ITA about the need to keep the senate b/c the repubs have put impeachment out their enough to do it if given the chance. However, Impeach for what? Doing his job while they’re being lazy? I would love to see an impeachment trial. It would be white insecurity on display and PBO could defend himself a la Baltimore Massacre. And no poc would ever vote for the repubs again b/c the racism of the impeachment would be obvious. Seriously, I wish they would.

        • TyrenM

I like that. “They hope. We wish.”

        • malletgirl02

In addition not only will they never get another poc vote if the Republicans impeach President Obama, but the poc who already vote democratic will be actively anti republican party instead of just voting against them.

          • jds09

I wish I could like this 1000 times. PoCs have looooong political memories.

      • aleth

Agreed! That is all they have left! They know 2016 is not theirs to win! And honestly Hillary wouldn’t mind it and a number of Dems

      • Guns3000

        “However, impeach for what?”

You ask that is if you’re dealing with rational people. Eric Holder was held in contempt that was obviously politically motivated. If they have the numbers they’ll fabricate a reason.

Since when do Repubs care if poc vote for them?

        • JojoRaze

I don’t doubt they don’t care about poc votes or would fabricate stuff. The thing is though, when the rubber hits the road, they have NOTHING. And trials require facts. PBo could defend himself at the impeachment and expose their BS for what it is, ENVY and RACISM. They will end up looking stupid, like they did during the government shutdown, because they have no facts.

The rights big complaint now is that PBO is ooverusing executive privilege. All he has to do is ask where were these people when GWB was issuing signing statements outlining chapter line and verse which parts of laws he wasn’t gonna follow? He can ask these fools if Lincoln overrreached when he cancelled habaes corpus during the Civil War; if FDR overreached when he rounded up Japanese Americans without charges? And the fact that as of today, PBO in five years has issued ONE MORE executive decrees that HW bush in his one term. Reagan issued nearly 400 and these idiots are mad over PBO’s 164.

I wish they would go this route and impeach because the facts aare not on the Repubs side…period.

    • AxelFoley

I hope this muthafucka knows that this President won’t take their bullshit. He and his people WILL ether the fuck outta them.

So, to paraphrase PBO, please proceed, you punk ass bitch muthafucka.

      • jds09

The last paragraph gets to the heart of it…

“Mike Lee and the rest of the Republicans are in desperate need of civics
lesson, and a dose of truth serum, because their irrational Obama hate
        is damaging the country.”

I’d argue that a good percentage of “progressives” fit into this category too. For all of them, I give a “please proceed”. PBO’s administration is not going into a prevent defense for the remainder of his term, the 2014 campaign will be another master class, he will continue change the “trajectory” of the country until he hands off the baton to another democratic president.

        • goldenstar

Agree with you about the 2014 Master Class. VP Biden and PBO both spoke to Democrat Caucus last week so they get and keep religion about the upcoming elections. Elections matter and this administration is moving full steam ahead to gain ground for the American people. If candidates run away from ACA, immigration reform, criminal justice system reforms, and economic justice, they do so at their own peril.

We, too, need to organize people to vote in the upcoming elections.

        • Scopedog

“I’d argue that a good percentage of “progressives” fit into this category too. ” Agreed–too many of them have also drunk from Greenwald’s Kool-Aid or are carrying on ridiculous crap like “Stand With Rand”.

          • jds09

Now they’re starting the “bully pulpit” crap. IMO, that’s the signal that they know what’s happening so they’re positioning themselves for “we made him do it” just before they “reluctantly” jump on the bandwagon.

          • malletgirl02

They are against President Obama using the “bully pulpit”? That is one of the powers he is entitled to as President of the United States. Have these fools taken U.S. government in high school?

GOP flocks to bill curbing Obama’s power
    By Molly K. Hooper – 02/17/14 06:49 AM EST

Dozens of House Republicans have recently backed legislation that calls for legal action against President Obama.

Forty-three Republicans have cosponsored the resolution since Obama’s State of the Union address, where he threatened to enact policies if Congress didn’t act.

The “Stop This Overreaching Presidency (STOP)” measure, introduced by Rep. Tom Rice (S.C.), now has 104 co-sponsors, including Senate GOP hopeful Reps. Jack Kingston (Ga.), James Lankford (Okla.), Steve Stockman (Texas), Paul Broun (Ga.), Steve Daines (Mont.) and Phil Gingrey (Ga.).

In an interview with The Hill, Rice explained that STOP resolution is aimed at reversing Obama’s delay of the employer mandate, enactment of the DREAM Act, extension of “substandard” health insurance plans and ending work requirements for welfare.

ELECTION 2014: SC poised to elect first black candidate to statewide office since Reconstruction
Posted by ADAM BEAM on February 16, 2014

    http://media.thestate.com/smedia/2014/02/15/21/40/bgdfH.AuSt.74.jpg

COLUMBIA, SC — A record seven African-American candidates are running for statewide office in 2014. Some could be eliminated in June’s primary elections, but it appears at least three black candidates will make it to November’s general election.

South Carolina also is assured to elect its first African-American candidate in a statewide race since Reconstruction in one U.S. Senate race, where all three of the announced candidates are black.

The last time South Carolinians elected an African-American to statewide office was 1872, when Richard Howell Gleaves was elected the state’s second – and last – black lieutenant governor. The black community’s political influence was squashed in 1895 when then-Gov. Ben Tillman rewrote the state’s Constitution – still in place today – to virtually eliminate all black influence in state politics.

Now, 142 years later, that influence appears the be returning – albeit it in small steps.

Barack Obama: You can call it ‘Obamacare’
By JOSE DELREAL | 2/17/14 9:38 AM EST

It may not be polling well, but President Barack Obama isn’t too worried about the Affordable Care Act’s nickname, “Obamacare,” or the health care law’s impact on his legacy.

“I like it. I don’t mind,” the president told former NBA star Charles Barkley in an interview that aired Sunday about the term “Obamacare.” “And I tell you, five years from now, when everybody’s saying, ‘Man, I’m sure glad we got healthcare,’ there are going to be a whole bunch of people who don’t call it Obamacare anymore because they don’t want me to get the credit.”

5 Years After Stimulus, Obama Says It Worked –[White House points to jobs saved and economic growth fostered in forthcoming report]- -
    – - – - -Five years ago Monday, President Barack Obama
visited the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to sign the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, his $800 billion stimulus bill.
At the time, the U.S. economy was losing 800,000 jobs a month. In the fourth quarter of 2008, it had contracted at an 8% annual rate, a Depression-level free fall.

“Today does not mark the end of our economic problems,” Obama said on Feb. 17, 2009. “But it does mark the beginning of the end.”

Sandy housing aid went to projects far from storm
    updated February 17, 2014 at 8:02 AM

Millions of dollars in federal housing aid meant for victims of Hurricane Sandy went to projects in counties far removed from those areas most impacted by the storm, an analysis of state data shows.

Nearly a third of the money — $47.6 million, earmarked for new affordable housing projects — landed in Essex and Middlesex counties, while many hard-hit Jersey Shore communities in Ocean saw relatively little of it.

The affordable housing program has come under sharp focus in recent weeks after questions were raised over the awarding of more than $10 million in grants involving at least two projects that appeared to have political overtones. In both cases, Gov. Chris Christie gained endorsements after the money was allocated in two communities barely brushed by the storm.

The 23-year-old golfer closed with a 4-under 69 at Royal Pines to finish at 16-under 276. Lee also shot 69 in the event sanctioned by the European and Australian tours. Good morning, Alma. Been on snow watch here and it has started right on time like predicted.

      • Alma98

        Good morning goldenstar.
It’s getting ugly here with the wind the is coming we’re under a storm watch. There will probably be flooding because it’s supposed to warm up this week with rain.

        • goldenstar

Funny that it’s only 80 miles between MW and here and still some weather differences. No wind here yet. And, it’s supposed to be warm really fast so there’s got to be some flooding because the ground is pretty frozen.

          • Alma98

I know right, and now the snow has started falling hard. Visibility is 0.8 miles I won’t be driving in this that’s for sure. I can’t believe they didn’t cancel classes or close schools early. I know they’ve missed a lot of days but it’s dangerous out there. Bus drivers already drive crazy. If I had a small kid they wouldn’t be on a school bus today.

          • goldenstar

There’s a school holiday here for President’s Day. Not in MW?

          • Alma98

Yes public schools are closed but some daycares and charter schools are open. Nevermind I see now they’re starting to close them.

Damn President Black just driven these 2520 males insane. Damn. You mean that’s all we had to do?? For all the talk of weakness and penis symbolism from both the left and right… all I have seen these past couple of years is the mental and physical weakness of these 2520 men. They are nothing without guns, lack intellectual flexibility and street smartness. So obsessed with Obama that they lost sight of themselves.

All I want is Dems to keep the senate and a cherry on top would be McConnell losing his seat. Karma has never been sweeter.

All of a sudden they got issues with the Presidents’ Power! 2520 YOU never fail to surprise us.. If they can’t win, they cheat, change the rules or ignore the rules.

I await this battle and I await how the Supreme Court hopes to deal with this issue in light of Mr. President Black.

Probe ordered into Port Authority cop’s role in GWB lane closures
    By Steve Strunsky/The Star-Ledger
    on February 17, 2014 at 6:30 AM

Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye has ordered the agency’s police chief to investigate the role an officer with reported ties to Gov. Chris Christie may have played in September’s George Washington Bridge lane closures in Fort Lee, a source close to the police department said Sunday.

The probe will focus on reports that Port Authority Police Lt. Thomas “Chip” Michaels, a 15-year department veteran and member of the GWB unit, chauffeured David Wildstein through clogged Fort Lee streets on Sept. 9, the first of four days of closures, said the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Wildstein is the former Christie-backed Port Authority official who ordered the closure of two of three local-access lanes from Fort Lee to the bridge.

“The executive director has ordered the chief to review Michaels’ actions,” the source said.

MURFREESBORO — For Indiana native Tim Fredericks, learning more about his family’s ancestry “has been a jigsaw puzzle,” and a tie to Murfreesboro was the missing piece.

The oldest of six children, Fredericks grew up in Boone County, Ind., near Indianapolis. The entire county had a population of about 14,000 — about half the population of the city of La Vergne.

By looking at other white families in the area, Fredericks knew something about his family was different, more so than having a grandfather from Costa Rica, as he was told.

The feds give a green light to the marijuana business

[....] The Obama administration plainly recognizes that with the sale or use of marijuana now legal in some form in 20 states and the District of Columbia, the old restrictions are anachronistic.[....] It’s not overturning federal drug law, which still defines marijuana as a controlled substance illegal to sell or distribute. It’s not endorsing the state initiatives. But the Treasury is building on liberalized criminal guidelines issued last August by the Department of Justice.

The DOJ similarly bowed to reality by relegating the pursuit of routine pot users and sellers to a very low priority. Instead, the DOJ listed its chief enforcement concerns as (among a few other things) preventing the sale of marijuana to minors, diverting revenue that goes to criminal enterprises or gangs and keeping pot trading from being used as a cover for the trafficking of harder drugs.[....]

The same needs to be done with U. S. police departments throughout the country…

Soldiers Leaving Army Due To Misconduct On The Rise
Data obtained by The Associated Press shows that the number of officers
who left the Army due to misconductmore than tripled in the past three
years. The number of enlisted soldiers forced out for drugs, alcohol,
crimes and other misconduct shot up from about 5,600 in 2007, as the
Iraq war peaked, to more than 11,000 last year.[....]

[Hagel] said said he is appointing a top officer to work with the services on the
problem, and he will be addressing the topic at regularly scheduled
meetings with his military leaders. The military services have been adding more lectures on ethics in their schools, and are also targeting top officers.[...] Lower-ranking service members are being asked to evaluate their
higher-ranking superiors as part of the annual performance reviews. That
    process is slowly being expanded.[....]

POU, stacking the deck or bait-and-switch? Why do I get the feeling that Chelsea’s being groomed to throw her hat into the ring somewhere in the not to distant future? Oh, btw, Chelsea the “incredible progress” that has been made is more than I can say about your father’s efforts on the issue. Have a seat…not voting for you either!

Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton said Sunday that the gay-rights cause made “incredible progress” on political and legal fronts in 2013, but progress should not be mistaken for success. Clinton called lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues “the unfinished business of the 21st century” in an address at a national conference in Las Vegas where actress Ellen Page came out as gay days earlier in an emotional speech that’s stirred a social media outpouring.[....]

I’m sick of her, too. Her mama’s Miss Ann and she’s nothing but an entitled Becky to me. I was cool with Chelsea when she was doing her own thing, but when she started trading on her name to get that job at NBC, which she sucked at, I was done.

      • Mi

I could never be cool with her. This young woman showed herself to be quite ugly on the inside. She never supported The Obamas and I think the first time she ever acknowledged President Obama was when her mama travelled with him to Myanmar, and even then she was all shady boots.

        • itgurl_29

    - – -Middle Grade Books for Black History Month— -
    - – –February is Black History month, and it’s never too soon to get prepared. There are many fabulous middle grade books, both fiction and nonfiction, that will help your family or classroom get in the groove. One of my all-time favorite authors is Christopher Paul Curtis. His personal story reads like a novel. His bio states that he grew up in Flint, Michigan. After high school he began working on the assembly line at the Fisher Body Plant No. 1 while attending the Flint branch of the University of Michigan, where he began writing essays and fiction.

This is fantastic news especially for natural entrepreneurs who were previously nervous about branching out on their own due to financial security concerns and the need to have a stable income to support their family. Also, thanks to Obamacare, health insurance that once was an impediment to business ownership, is no longer an issue!

    • goldenstar

Thanks, creolechild! Chicago is one of the test sites and I’m going to the website to learn more.
