Monday Open Thread: Little Known or Interesting Black History Facts

To close out Black History Month,  this week’s thread topic will be on some little known or just plain interesting black history facts.

Black-History-Month Image 1

FACT 1: Allensworth is the first all-black Californian township, founded and financed by African Americans. Created by Lieutenant Colonel Allen Allensworth in 1908, the town was built with the intention of establishing a self-sufficient city where African Americans could live their lives free of racial prejudice.

FACT 2: Black ingenuity helped devise creative — and effective — plans to escape enslavement. In 1848, husband-and-wife team William and Ellen Craft made it to the North, and eventually England, when she dressed as a white man and he posed as one of her slaves. A year later,Henry “Box” Brown literally mailed himself to freedom in a shipping box during a 27-hour trip from Richmond to Philadelphia.

FACT 3: After African-American performer Josephine Baker expatriated to France, she famously smuggled military intelligence to French allies during World War II. She did this by pinning secrets inside her dress, as well as hiding them in her sheet music.

FACT 4: Architect Paul Williams mastered the art of drawing upside down so that he could sit across from — not next to — white clients who didn’t want to sit side-by-side with a black person.

FACT 5: Josiah Henson fled slavery in Maryland in 1830 and later founded a settlement in Ontario, Canada, for other black citizens who had escaped. His autobiography, The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, as Narrated by Himself (1849), is believed to have been Harriet Beecher Stowe’s inspiration for the main character in Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

A special mention

Three African-American brothers are the grandfathers of punk music. Check out the documentary n this group if you get a chance.

Death is a garage rock and protopunk demo band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1971 by brothers Bobby (bass, vocals), David (guitar), and Dannis (drums) Hackney. The African American trio started out as an R&B band but switched to rock after seeing The Who play. Seeing Alice Cooper play was also an inspiration. Music critic Peter Margasak retrospectively wrote that David “pushed the group in a hard-rock direction that presaged punk, and while this certainly didn’t help them find a following in the mid-70s, today it makes them look like visionaries.”

Scott Walker on Fox News dodges question on secret emails
Investigation is ‘old news,’ governor says
By Bill Glauber of the Journal Sentinel

Gov. Scott Walker declined again Sunday to answer whether he knew of the existence of a secret email system in his Milwaukee County executive office.

Instead, during the appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” Walker called the controversy over the release of thousands of emails “old news” and said Democrats were trying to switch the subject from his budget successes.

“If you look at the facts out there, this is old news,” Walker said. “This is about a case that was closed last March. A Democratic district attorney in Milwaukee County spent multiple years looking at all this information.

“The 27,000-plus pages of documents that were just released this week have been looked at by a team led by a Democrat from Milwaukee County, and last March he announced the end of that case, plain and simple. It’s old news.”

His comments echoed those he made Friday while speaking to reporters for the first time since the release of the documents.

A Case Of Sparkling Perry Error
    Posted by Zandar

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has apparently come up with the perfect GOP delusion on immigration: reforming it magically no longer matters!

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, no stranger to the tough debate over the nation’s immigration laws, thinks recent legislation passed by Mexico’s Congress, a major priority of President Enrique Pena Nieto, may have set in motion a reversal of the flow of undocumented immigrants northward. In a short time, Perry said in an interview Saturday, undocumented immigrants may be streaming back over the U.S.-Mexico border, headed for lucrative energy sector jobs back home.

“The landscape on immigration is fast changing,” Perry said. “My instinct is that immigration and immigration reform are going to be substantially less of a flashpoint than they have been in the last several years.”

So what miracle is this that will see undocumented workers flood back south to Mexico? Drill baby drill!

Brian Beutler: The right’s sociopathic new scam: Using Americans to harm their own health plans

GOP-aligned groups are now exploiting innocent people who need Obamacare — by having them campaign for its demise

Every time an enemy of the Affordable Care Act promotes a new Obamacare “horror story,” the law’s supporters, and a handful of diligent reporters, are given an exciting new opportunity to assess whether the story really stands up to scrutiny, or whether it’s a product of exaggeration, ignorance, malice, prejudice or a combination thereof.

But at the same time, it places Democratic politicians on the horns of an awkward dilemma, because even if the story is completely bunk, it’s still a human tale, and no elected official comes out well by questioning a constituent who claims to have been harmed in some way.

TPM: The Obamacare Hail Mary That Could Save The Senate For Democrats

The 2014 handicapping is underway, and the consensus is clear: Democrats face a tough battle to maintain control of the Senate. They’re defending too many seats in red states where President Obama and his signature health care reform law are unpopular.

They’re also at a structural disadvantage. Turning out the base, conventional wisdom and historical precedents say, is the key element for midterm elections, and Republicans have done it better.

But Democrats might have a secret weapon in a couple of those key Senate races. Activist groups and state lawmakers are working to get Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion on the ballot in Louisiana and Montana, where they have vulnerable candidates and GOP officials have refused to adopt the provision.

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/obamacare-medicaid-expansion-ballot-initiative

    • jds09

Ya know, the ‘conventional wisdom’ crowd is beginning to bore me. All these prognostication based upon historical trends, with a stubborn refusal to factor in new realities, then treating the new realities (crazy GOP, OFA, death of the Southern Strategy, blacklash to voter suppression, etc.) as ‘breaking news.’ I got one thing to say, there was no historical trend for having a black president either.

      • conlakappa

Which renders it all ahistorical but one cannot tell them what know [or think they know] anything!

Detroit police feel the pain of city’s money woes
1 day ago By SHARON COHEN of Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — It has come to this: Even some criminals sympathize with Detroit’s cops.

Baron Coleman thought he’d heard it all in his 17 years patrolling the streets. But then came the city’s bankruptcy, a 10 percent cut in police salaries, followed by support from a most unlikely corner — the bad guys.

“When they saw us take a pay cut they were in shock. We were arresting guys … and they were like, ‘I can’t believe your city would do you like this.’ … I say, ‘Thanks for caring,'” the veteran officer says with a smile. “It’s just funny because I don’t like communicating with a person who has just committed a robbery how sad my life is.”

Detroit police officers have long known adversity: They’ve worked in crumbling station houses with busted pipes, driven run-down cars, tangled with balky radios. They’ve navigated darkened streets — Detroit has thousands of broken street lights — chasing criminals, breaking up fights, encountering drug dealers who may be carrying AK-47s or wearing their own bulletproof vests.

Obama’s Cousin Tries to Explain Posting and Mocking Gruesome X-Rays
    by Tommy Christopher | 9:21 pm, February 23rd, 2014

Sometimes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, but then it takes a weird bounce. Dr. Milton Wolf, health care-reforming radiologist and second cousin to President Obama, is currently defending himself over Facebook posts in which he uploaded x-rays of fatally wounded gun victims, and participated in joking commentary about them. Dr. Wolf, also a candidate for the U.S. Senate, explained to reporter Tim Carpenter that joking about a patient who was nearly decapitated by a shotgun blast was “educational.”

    Supreme court rejects NRA appeals
By ASSOCIATED PRESS | 2/24/14 9:59 AM EST

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court has turned away appeals from the National Rifle Association which complained about resistance by governments and judges to the high court’s recent seminal rulings declaring that Americans have a constitutional right to own a gun.

The justices on Monday let stand rulings that upheld a federal law that prevents young adults ages 18-20 from purchasing a handgun or ammunition from a licensed federal firearms dealer and a Texas regulation that prohibits most 18-to-20 year olds from carrying a handgun outside the home.

The NRA said the laws make it difficult, if not impossible, for young adults to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

The court did not comment in denying the appeals.

“We are asking all our strongest supporters to do all you can to help hold the Senate and win the House,” Wicks wrote. “We know from our friends at the other Super PACs that many of our most committed supporters have already weighed in. The cross-pollination between Priorities USA Action donors and donors to the House and Senate Super PACs is impressive. So if you have given, thank you. If you have yet to give, please understand how high the stakes are and donate.”

Someone there said why would priorities USA do something so stupid to demoralize Dem voters because PBO and Dems got strength for 2008 after winning the House in 2006.

    Health Care Horror Hooey

    FEB. 23, 2014

Remember the “death tax”? The estate tax is quite literally a millionaire’s tax — a tax that affects only a tiny minority of the population, and is mostly paid by a handful of very wealthy heirs. Nonetheless, right-wingers have successfully convinced many voters that the tax is a cruel burden on ordinary Americans — that all across the nation small businesses and family farms are being broken up to pay crushing estate tax liabilities.

You might think that such heart-wrenching cases are actually quite rare, but you’d be wrong: they aren’t rare; they’re nonexistent. In particular, nobody has ever come up with a real modern example of a family farm sold to meet estate taxes. The whole “death tax” campaign has rested on eliciting human sympathy for purely imaginary victims.

And now they’re trying a similar campaign against health reform.

I’m not sure whether conservatives realize yet that their Plan A on health reform — wait for Obamacare’s inevitable collapse, and reap the political rewards — isn’t working. But it isn’t. Enrollments have recovered strongly from the law’s disastrous start-up; in California, which had a working website from the beginning, enrollment has already exceeded first-year projections. The mix of people signed up so far is older than planners had hoped, but not enough so to cause big premium hikes, let alone the often-predicted “death spiral.”

And conservatives don’t really have a Plan B — in their world, nobody even dares mention the possibility that health reform might actually prove workable. Still, you can already see some on the right groping toward a new strategy, one that relies on highlighting examples of the terrible harm Obamacare does. There’s only one problem: they haven’t managed to come up with any real examples. Consider several recent ventures on the right:

This caca about the “family farm” being sold to pay estate taxes makes me steam. No that long ago, someone of my acquaintance whined about how the ranch got sold when his grandparents died back in the ’60’s & it was all the governments fault.

I called him out with a big BS on that because I knew the whole story. Neither his mother or any of her siblings wanted to run that ranch. They all wanted their share of the money from the sale to do their own thing! I let him have it good because he is a lying Repug. I did it in public too! At a party, everybody heard & several people who also knew the truth backed me.

Hola POU! I’m early this morning but I suppose it is starting to be afternoon for some of you. I’ve been reading here & there and some seem to be losing their minds over the latest AZ estupido SB1062 Or how to let religious bigots screw their neighbors & themselves.

Our bruja Gov hasn’t signed it yet. I won’t go loco till she does. I don’t think she will. She refused to sign the last one. The business community is having a melt down over this nonsense & it will be challenged in the courts.

We had an early Dem planning meeting this AM & some folks are literally foaming at the mouth over taking out the TRASH in November. One guy was actually producing spittle as he raved. I said that we should save the energy & the rage & get to working!!!

    The Private School Conundrum

ASHA FRENCH LAMENTS HER ABILITY TO TEACH—AND SEND HER CHILD TO—AN ELITE PRIVATE SCHOOL

I’m not an expert on public education reform; I’m just a mother who recently visited a private school and saw, for the first time, the kind of education money can buy. I suddenly empathized with the mother on a 2008 episode of Oprah who broke down in tears when she toured the public school on the outskirts of Chicago. She wept for all of the privileges her own children had missed in what Jonathan Kozol calls an “American Apartheid” in which public schools are (under)funded by neighborhood taxes and those who literally step out of their place are criminalized. The mother wept as she stared at the high ceiling of the state-of-the-art gym, shoulders drooping like a defeated Cinderella anticipating the bell’s toll. I imagine that her tears were bitter with justifiable rage.

I felt something more than anger; it was a dull but painful resignation. I knew that, if granted the opportunity, I would gladly enroll my daughter in this school and bury my dreams of advocacy-within-the-walls beneath a stack of tuition receipts. I felt guilty. If the Oprahguest’s bitter tears were like fresh bullet wounds that invite sympathy and incite action, my own resigned awe was like a paper cut, albeit deep. No blood, no bother. If the Oprah guest’s song was Fantasia’s “I’m Here,” my song was Beyonce’s “Pretty Hurts.” I got the sense that guilt was the easiest, and most selfish, way to deal with my anticipated privilege. If I had cried on that visit, my tears would have tasted like candy—the expensive kind.

    Richmond’s hell-no Republicans
    By Editorial Board,

VIRGINIA REPUBLICANS, having been swept from power at the hands of an electorate alienated by their tilt toward extremism, retain just one bastion in Richmond: the state House of Delegates. From that redoubt, they have resorted to political stunts and budgetary gimmicks as a means of derailing Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s proposal to extend health coverage to hundreds of thousands of Virginians by expanding Medicaid. They seem content that the impasse may end in a state government shutdown, from which they evidently hope to gain political advantage by blaming it on Democrats. We doubt it’s a winning strategy for Republicans. It’s certainly a losing strategy for Virginia.

In Richmond, House GOP lawmakers have made it clear they are not interested in compromise, nor do they wish to be bothered much with the facts. Mr. McAuliffe (D), in office barely a month, has tried schmoozing and executive mansion hospitality; he is nothing if not a deal-maker. The Republicans have responded with derision and fighting words. For them, it is enough to demonize Medicaid expansion as a function of Obamacare, and hope the resulting slogans carry the day — no matter what the cost to hundreds of thousands of struggling state residents who have no health insurance.

While critics cried “nanny state” when Mrs. Obama first proposed her
campaign to focus on youth obesity, the program has undoubtedly raised awareness about a critical problem and affected our nation’s nutritional standards.

Thanks to the first lady’s efforts our country’s school lunch program has been reformed and several major corporations have pledged to put more of an emphasis on fruits and veggies in their store chains.

Mrs. Obama has also practiced what she preaches, remaining physically fit and active at the age of 50.

In South Carolina, Clinton forces try to tap Obama magic
By Peter Hamby, CNN National Political Reporter
updated 7:46 AM EST, Mon February 24, 2014

Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) — To hear some tell it, the 2008 South Carolina primary clash between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton was a few steps away from a full-blown race riot.

“It was unbelievable down here in 2007 and 2008,” said Bridget Tripp, a Democratic organizer from Lexington who supported Obama in that year’s primary. “Bill Clinton was going through downtown Columbia calling Barack Obama a racist.”

It never got that bad, of course. But in the runup to the contest and in its aftermath, the Clinton campaign scrambled to explain away comments that rankled the black community: Hillary Clinton seeming to downplay Martin Luther King Jr.’s role in passing the Civil Rights Act, Bill Clinton’s biting characterization of Obama’s campaign as “the biggest fairy tale I’ve ever seen” and a range of remarks from Clinton allies that seemed to belittle Obama’s achievements.

Bill Clinton’s remarks in particular went over so poorly that South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn, then the state’s highest-ranking African-American in Congress, went on national television and told the former president to “chill.” The morning after Obama’s crushing 28-point victory, Bill Clinton waved it off in glib terms, comparing Obama to Jesse Jackson, just another black candidate with black support.

    • goldenstar

OMG. This article has some actual goods. And, Rep. Clyburn is his usual well-messaged self. But this here:

“Is Hillary ready for Hillary? That’s the question,” said former South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Dick Harpootlian, who said he plans to support Biden if he runs. “Is it a political organization or a fan club for a boy band? I just don’t understand the idea that somehow you’ve got to encourage her to run. Either people want to run and have a coherent message about why they should be president, or not. She has been around the block. She knows that if she wants to run, she can get in and get the money.”‘I think it’s a cult’

“I think it’s a cult, not a political movement,” Harpootlian added. “Ready for Hillary compared to who? The field still has to develop.”

      • TyrenM

It took to get to the bottom of article but, yeah, I was coming with “I think it’s a cult.”

      • conlakappa

Why Harpootlian’s name was familiar. He’s tangled with Camp Inevitable before: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/01/23/clinton.obama/index.html?eref=yahoo

The former congressman left the African country on Sunday, his attorney confirmed to the AP on Monday.

    – – –Legal troubles [From his wiki]
In August 1994, Reynolds was indicted for sexual assault and criminal sexual abuse for engaging in a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old campaign volunteer that began during the 1992 campaign.[1] Despite the charges, he continued his campaign and was re-elected that November; he had no opposition.[1]
Reynolds initially denied the charges, which he claimed were racially
motivated. On August 22, 1995, he was convicted on 12 counts of sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography. He resigned his seat on October 1 of that year.[2]

Reynolds was sentenced to five years in prison, thus he expected to
be released in 1998. However, in April 1997 he was convicted on 15
unrelated counts of bank fraud and lying to SECinvestigators. These charges resulted in an additional sentence of 78 months in federal prison. Reynolds served all of his first sentence, and served 42 months in prison for the later charges. At that point, President Bill Clinton commuted the sentence for bank fraud. As a result, Reynolds was released from prison and served the remaining time in a halfway house.[3][4]
