Monday Open Thread: More African-Americans Firsts

This week’s open threads will highlight more African-Americans firsts.  Today’s post will talk about the first free black community.

fort mose

Fort Mose Historic State Park (originally known as Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mosé) is a U.S. National Historic Landmark (designated as such on October 12, 1994), located two miles north of St. Augustine, Florida, on the eastern edge of a marsh. The original site of the fort was uncovered in a 1986 archeological dig. The 24-acre (9.7 ha) site is now a Florida State Park, administered through the Anastasia State Recreation Area. Fort Mose was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994 and is the “premier site on the Florida Black Heritage Trail.” The fort has also been known as Fort Moosa or Fort Mossa.

Fort Mose (pronounced “Moh-say”) was the first free black settlement legally sanctioned in what would become the United States. The community began when Florida was a Spanish territory. As early as 1687, the Spanish government had begun to offer asylum to slaves from British colonies. In 1693, the Spanish Crown officially proclaimed that runaways would find freedom in Florida, in return for Catholic conversion and a term of four years of service to the Crown. In effect, Spain created a maroon colony as a front-line defense against English attacks from the north. Spain also intended to destabilize the plantation economy of the British colonies by creating a free black community that would serve as a destination for slaves seeking escape and refuge

Incoming freedom seekers were recognized as free, taken into the Spanish militia, and placed into service at the Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mosé military fort north of St. Augustine, which was established in 1738 by the Colonial Governor, Manuel de Montiano. The military leader at the fort was a Creole man of African origin, who was baptized as Francisco Menendez by the Spanish Fort Mose. Word of the settlement reached the South Carolina and Georgia to the north, attracting escaping slaves. It helped to set off the Stono Rebellion in September 1739, led by slaves “fresh from Africa” in South Carolina, who were more likely to revolt. During the Stono revolt, several dozen blacks tried unsuccessfully to reach Spanish Florida.

In 1740, British forces, led by James Oglethorpe of Georgia, attacked and destroyed the fort in the Siege of Fort Mose. During the siege, a force consisting of Spanish troops, Indian auxiliaries, and free black militiamen counterattacked Oglethorpe’s troops, forcing them back to Savannah. Because the fort was destroyed, its inhabitants relocated to St. Augustine, where they stayed until Fort Mose was rebuilt in 1752.

After East Florida was ceded to the British in the Peace of Paris of 1763 most of the inhabitants, including many black militia troops, migrated to Cuba with the evacuating Spanish.

A haven for escaped slaves from the British colonies to the north, Fort Mose is considered the “premier site on the Florida Black Heritage Trail.” It is also a precursor site of the Underground Railroad. This was the network in the antebellum years by which slaves escaped to freedom, most often to the North and Canada, but also to the Bahamas and Mexico.

I truly don’t care for Van Jones:

Former Obama Administration Official: Obama Will ‘Pay Price’ For Healthcare Promise Reversal

This morning on “This Week,” Crossfire co-host Van Jones, a former Obama administration official, said the president would “pay a price,” for reversing course on his now famous promise that those Americans who like their plans could keep them if them if they wished under Obamacare.

“”And he overpromised. And he will, listen, he will pay a price. ‘Mission accomplished,’ you pay a price. ‘No new taxes,’ you pay a price. ‘You keep your plan,’ you pay a price,” Jones said.

    http://news.yahoo.com/former-obama-administration-official-obama-pay-price-healthcare-180310167–abc-news-topstories.html

PBO didn’t “reverse course” nor did he lie or overpromise. The media is once again hyping and blowing something completely out of proportion as well as being misleading. And once again a handful of simps on the left amplify the concern trolling rather than challenge it. As far as I’m concerned, he no longer has any leg to stand on re: the Shirley Sherrod firing because he’s shown himself to be just as inclined to cape for GOP concern trolling and far right politicians like Rand Paul.

I think so b/c he came on the TJMS before Obama was elected the first time with the idea of Hoopties for Hybrids.

Cash for Clunkers sounds too much like Hoopties for Hybrids for Van Jones to not be involved.

      – — -Jones said, “Only 14 percent of Americans were able to keep these individual market plans for two years” before Obamacare became law. He was trying to make the point that canceled policies have been the norm in the individual insurance market long before the Affordable Care Act.

His figure is 3 percentage points off of a 2004 study that found only17 percent of individual policyholders kept their plans for more than two years. More importantly, though, a health policy expert said Jones probably went too far in indicating that insurance companies were to blame for the high turnover. Many people enter that market for the purpose of buying short-term protection.

That means people in the individual market might be dropping the health insurance plan they have as much as insurance companies might be canceling the plan altogether.

As examples of his plagiarizing from Wikipedia and other sources pile up, Rand Paul’s Senate office now appears to have started scrubbing his Senate website to make it harder to get the text of his speeches.

The screengrab below shows what it used to look like if you went to his website to watch his “State of the Union” response, containing the block of text plagiarized from an Associated Press article. You could follow along with the transcript of the speech typed out below. You can see the page says, “Below is a video and transcript of his speech.”

Special Investigation: How Insurers Are Hiding Obamacare Benefits From Customers
    DYLAN SCOTT – NOVEMBER 4, 2013, 5:13 AM EST

Donna received the letter canceling her insurance plan on Sept. 16. Her insurance company, LifeWise of Washington, told her that they’d identified a new plan for her. If she did nothing, she’d be covered.

A 56-year-old Seattle resident with a 57-year-old husband and 15-year-old daughter, Donna had been looking forward to the savings that the Affordable Care Act had to offer.

But that’s not what she found. Instead, she’d be paying an additional $300 a month for coverage. The letter made no mention of the health insurance marketplace that would soon open in Washington, where she could shop for competitive plans, and only an oblique reference to financial help that she might qualify for, if she made the effort to call and find out.

    more here: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/insurance-companies-misleading-letters-obamacare

    • goldenstar

Once again, the insurance companies demonstrate their gangster moves and prove to the public why we need Obamacare. These companies are pure criminals.

      • conlakappa

So true. This is what the do-nothing, no-account House of Representatives should be looking into but, yanno, those Benghazi hearings aren’t going to hold themselves. That’s okay though: it seems like a case that’s ripe for the CFPB.

        • qosine

Yes, and this is a major reason why the GOP House wish list included redirecting funding for CFPB to Congress. Insurance gangsters are perfect targets to investigate. Can’t wait.

      • jds09

I met this woman once, years ago and I’ll never forget her. She worked for a health insurance company (only full-time job she ever had) had moved up the ranks to make $70,000 a year, with only a HS diploma.

Her job? She decided who got services and who didn’t. She looked 20 years older than she was, hated her job but felt trapped by her lifestyle.

At that time I was making bumpkis but loved what I did and became extremely grateful for what I had in that moment. That woman was caught up in s straight out criminal enterprise and was paying for it with her peace of mind.

Al Sharpton, Macy’s CEO to meet over racial profiling
By Thomas Tracy / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
    Sunday, November 3, 2013, 1:27 AM

The Rev. Al Sharpton will meet with Macy’s CEO Monday to discuss allegations of racial profiling at the retailer’s flagship store in Herald Square.

“We’re trying to get everyone on record on what their security policies
are and evaluate their procedures,” Sharpton told the Daily News on
Saturday. “I think we are going to see the validity of these claims,
which will lead to a major policy shift in stores and some real
discussions of racial profiling in this city.”

    MORE: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/sharpton-macy-ceo-meet-racial-profiling-article-1.1505147#ixzz2jgcpdxke
    —————————————————————————

Remember those Black preachers who were going to organize a march against Rev? They’re mighty quiet about these racial profile cases.

    • Miranda

When was their bitchfest, errr…I mean march..supposed to take place? I’m guessing since all they got from that lil publicity stunt was people snickering and giggling at them, they called it off.

      • conlakappa

Speaking of Pointless Stunts in Modern Negro Times, I forgot to mention that in its eleventy billionth survey that that NAACP sent, asking what the focus/foci should be, there was an insert pamphlet of “The NAACP’s Second Century” on which they had the nerve to put President Obama. If memory serves, based on what he’s wearing/his hair being very dark, I think it’s from the address he gave during his first year. How cheeky is that?

        • jds09

conlakappa, did you get a sense if the NAACP is evening considering going back to their litigation roots?

          • conlakappa

There is a divide in the Legal Defense Fund [which is in NYC] and the national office [based in Baltimore]. The former seems to understand its mission and operates on its own accord. I wonder if the latter is still figuring out what its 21st Century mission is. My eyes rolled too hard over the featuring of the President on the pamphlet cover to even open the darn thing! I have now: Education, Legal counsel, Economic Empowerment, Health Care, and Voter Empowerment.

Under Health Care Act, Millions Eligible for Free Policies
    Published: November 3, 2013

Millions of people could qualify for federal subsidies that will pay the entire monthly cost of some health care plans being offered in the online marketplaces set up under President Obama’s health care law, a surprising figure that has not garnered much attention, in part because the zero-premium plans come with serious trade-offs.

Three independent estimates by Wall Street analysts and a consulting firm say up to seven million people could qualify for the plans, but federal officials and insurers are reluctant to push them too hard because they are concerned about encouraging people to sign up for something that might ultimately not fit their needs.

The bulk of these plans are so-called bronze policies, the least expensive available. They require people to pay the most in out-of-pocket costs, for doctor visits and other benefits like hospital stays.

There was an article in yesterday’s Philly Inquirer that went in depth about Christie’s ties with the NJ Dems and how it has impacted the Buono campaign. Basically the piece confirms everything that us Jersey POUers have been saying for months about Buono being doomed from the jump. I thought this particular passage was interesting and summed up perfectly how shady alliances can be in NJ politics:

Over his first term Christie has sidled up to members of the state’s powerful Democratic establishment with unprecedented ardor – and they to him.

    Consider:

Sixty local Democratic elected officials have endorsed Christie.

Democratic Essex County Executive Joseph “Joe D.” DiVincenzo, who runs one of the largest governmental and political operations in the state, has campaigned with Christie like a running mate.

Sen. Cory Booker, the state’s best-known elected Democrat, supports Christie’s opponent – but the day after his election to the U.S. Senate he joined Christie at a groundbreaking for a ShopRite in Newark and praised the governor for bipartisanship.

Last month, Christie watched the Cowboys-Eagles game from a luxury box at Lincoln Financial Field with Democrat George E. Norcross III, the South Jersey power broker, business executive, and part-owner of The Inquirer. Although Norcross has not endorsed Christie, for the first time in nearly 30 years this prodigious fund-raiser has not gotten involved in a governor’s race on behalf of the Democrat.

Nevertheless, it is likely that the justices decided that a recent Oklahoma Supreme Court
decision muddied the issues presented by the case to such an extent that it made sense to wait to decide an important question regarding the ability of states to restrict the use of medication abortions.

    – — — SNIP- – –
In the short term, Monday’s order means that a conservative Supreme Court that’s shown considerable eagerness to restrict abortion rights in the past will not decide a major abortion case. In the medium term, however, the question of medication abortions is likely to be in front of the justices again very soon. Texas recently enacted a law that, among other things, includes restrictions on medication abortions that are narrower than the restrictions in Oklahoma.

Under the law, all damages – including moral damage – should be compensated “at the expense of the means of the person committing the terrorist act and also at the expense of the means of his [or her] family, relatives and close people.”

Luis Quintana appointment as Newark mayor on hold as not enough council members show
    By Seth Augenstein/The Star-Ledger
    on October 31, 2013 at 10:59 AM, updated October 31, 2013 at 12:30 PM

NEWARK — The city council was an hour late and a vote short this morning in appointing an interim mayor.

An emergency meeting had been called Wednesday night to appoint
Council President Luis Quintana interim mayor after Cory Booker resigned to be sworn in as U.S. senator today. However, only four members were in attendance, and the council lacked a fifth vote.

      UPDATE:

Luis Quintana sworn in as Newark’s first Latino mayor, filling unexpired term of Cory Booker
      By Ted Sherman/The Star-Ledger
      on November 04, 2013 at 12:14 PM, updated November 04, 2013 at 12:15 PM

…Quintana, 53, who was selected unanimously by the council in an emergency meeting, becomes Newark’s first Latino mayor. He serves until July 1, 2014, when Booker’s term expires. The city will be holding general elections in May, when a new mayor will be elected. Quintana said he has no plans to seek the job.

The vote on an interim mayor came five days after Booker resigned, after an earlier emergency meeting of the council lacked a quorum because several council members did not show up, including several who went to Washington, D.C., for Booker’s swearing in ceremony.

You are celebrated and put upon a pedestal the day you are born. We see it in magazines, television and runway shows throughout the world. Meanwhile black women are invisible, told we are unattractive and not worthy of love, happiness. Look no further than the disrespect directed at our first lady on a daily basis. And not one white feminist group says shit. But they find time to tell us how great Hillary is, they even went to bat for Sarah Palin. So you don’t get to bitch about us telling our daughters, mothers and sisters that they are loved and worthy. Our contributions and sacrifices to and for this country are often overlooked and forgotten. So you all can STFU and have a stadium full of seats. I’m so sick of this shit!

BINGO. Use of the corrupt, scandal-thirsty US beltway media to effect a hit on US intelligence and a propaganda coup for China. And all of a sudden GG pops up with a quarter of a BILLION dollars to add yet more corruption to the national US media. Liberals who are sympathetic to the Snowden ring are absolute fools; libertarians and teabaggers are motivated by PBO animus; liberals drawn into this are being self-defeated by hubris and a desire to be “fair” which the far right has used to: destroy ACORN; get Shirley Sherrod fired; plant the teaparty into the House in 2010 as well as take over numerous local and state offices. Yet you have an asshat like Chris Hayes likening this foolishness to the Civil Rights movement. Really ridiculous times.

    Ok. Damnit stop nagging me.

Just got back from the clinic. I’m glad I went when I did cause the lobby was empty (the occupational clinic next door though was FULL). So I was in to see the RN and the NP in like 30 minutes flat.

First off, the cough, no fever, my ear were okay, my throat was a little red, but probably due to cough, and my lungs sounded clear. So diagnosis: upper respiratory infection, Rx: cough syrup and let cough run its course. I hope it does so by the time I leave for DFW Thursday!

Mainly though, the upper thigh pain, which after questioning I realized also involved lower back pain that radiated into the thigh. Diagnosis: Prob inflammation of the Sciatic nerve due to newly developed bowling skills (HA!). Rx: Steroid shot to the buttocks, and anti-inflammation med for about 5 days (give or take one, since I actually got some samples from RN too).

I didn’t feel like going to Walmart at Lunch rush hour, so I’ll put in my Rx tomorrow (my 37th B-day BTW) and just use the cough meds I have at home and the samples the RN gave me will last me til tmrw.

    Now leave me alone…WANKERS.

P.S. Thanks for the pushes to go to the clinic.

This is the new meme: President Obama can’t run the government as efficiently as he ran his campaigns. He can’t govern.

This is bullshit. This man has run an amazing government: the stimulus (largest in American history) was distributed without ANY scandal. This administration passed health care for all Americans and in the face of CONTINUOUS and CONSTANT attacks from corporate and political opponents has created a program that will change America fundamentally by creating a safety net in health care and freeing the entrepreneurial spirit of the country. From the BP oil spill, the hurricanes and the top to bottom clean up of FEMA, the Department of Homeland Security, and the capture of Bin Laden. This country has never been run better; he has a sense of purpose and direction that was missing from President Clinton’s administration and a clarity of purpose that they envy.

This is the best run administration since Eisenhower IMO. And history will vindicate him and the MSM will look sad and small given the punditry and lies and outright sandbagging of this President.

This is the first Black Man to be President; to unapologetically wield the power of the presidency. This has caused a lot of folks to, excuse my language, lose their shit. The next black, brown, or women to sit in that seat will find it a little easier because of the disrespect and pain Barack Obama and his family has had to endure.

An alligator has been found living beneath an escalator at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

…Officers think a passenger took the gator to the airport by train but then dumped it after realizing it wouldn’t pass security.

…The animal, which has stunted growth, is now being treated by the Chicago Herpetological Society.

“It was in pretty bad shape,” said group president Jason Hood. “We’re trying to get it healthy and find a place for it.”

    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/alligator-found-living-beneath-chicago-airport-escalator-article-1.1505805

The alligator was probably scared to death. Whomever was stupid enough to try to bring it on a plane and then heartless enough to just abandon it at an airport is a complete jerk. People need to leave these wild animals alone already, stop messing with nature.
