Monday Open Thread: Showstoppers! African American Milliners

Good Morning POU!

No, I did NOT know the proper name for a hat designer was “Milliner”.  Well, as you know, the African American community has a very storied history with hats. Hats are statements. Hats tell a story. This week, let’s honor the great Milliners of our history!

In April 2009, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) acquired part of legendary hat designer Mae Reeves’ extensive hat collection, antique furniture from her millinery shop and other personal items to tell the story about her illustrious career.

Reeves, now 99, recently discussed her contributions to the fashion world in a special interview conducted by her daughter, former NPR documentary producer Donna Limerick and NMAAHC representatives. Her 50-year collection will be part of a permanent fashion exhibit at the museum, expected to open in 2015.

“It’s a typical American story and as a museum that tells the American story from a Black perspective, Black businesses play some extent in that,” said Michele Gates Moresi, NMAAHC curator of collections. “And also, the issue of gender and that women are represented enough and given their due in the museum, so doing Black women’s businesses certainly makes a lot of sense.”

During the early 1930s, Reeves attended the Chicago School of Millinery where she learned how to shape hats with special molds, using steam and wires to hold the shapes. Her goal was to learn the art of making handmade hats and her favorite work was decorating the hats with unusual feathers, flowers, bows and other materials. “A hat expresses something special about a woman’s personality,” said Reeves. “I try to make one-of-a-kind hats so my customers don’t have to worry about going out and seeing themselves somewhere else. You never want to see another woman wearing the same hat that you have on.”

On a 1934 visit to her brother in Philadelphia, Reeves decided to make the region her home. While working sales at Seymour’s Ladies Apparel Shop on South Street in 1936, the owner taught Reeves business skills such as how to buy the stock, manage the shop and decorate the windows. At age 28, Reeves secured a $500 bank loan from the Citizens and Southern Bank (also on South Street) and in 1940, opened Mae’s Millinery Shop at 1630 South St.

By 1953, Reeves’ business had grown substantially. At that time the 60th Street area of West Philadelphia had many prosperous businesses, Woolworth’s 5 & 10 store, several banks, other women’s and men’s apparel shops and shoe stores – all run by white businessmen. The hat designer soon found the perfect place for her new shop at 41 N. 60th Street and became the first African-American woman to own a business on 60th Street corridor.

It was at the 60th Street location where Reeves designed and created some of her most magnificent hats, including her famous turbans, feather and veil hats. Customers came from as far north as Boston and as far south as Virginia to order her special creations. Over the next 30 years her customers included Mrs. Philip DuPont, Mrs. Walter Annenberg, women from the Biddle family, the Honorable C. DeLores Tucker and many others who became friends and customers. To accommodate customers, Reeves traveled to New York and Paris to find the best materials of silk, feathers, ribbons, flowers, velvet and ornaments for her ladies hats.

By the 1970s, the world of fashion changed drastically as women began to wear bouffant hairstyles, wigs and Afros hats were no longer fashionable, except with older women. Reeves kept the shop open until 1997, retiring when she was 85-years-old. In 2003, at age 91, Reeves moved to Darby, Pa., where she now resides.

“I always encourage my customers to wear hats that make a statement about fashion and themselves,” said Reeves. “I love women to wear hats because it makes them look so pretty. You know, on days when you feel you need a lift hats are a good way to boost your morale. Every woman should have at least one special hat they can put on strut out the door and say, ‘Here I am, world. I feel good and I know I look good.”

Construction of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is scheduled to begin on the Mall in 2012 and completed in 2015.

Michael Hiltzik: Fiscal Idiocy: What States Refusing Medicaid Will Cost Their Citizens

Sherry Glied and Stephanie Ma of the Commonwealth Fund have done the math to show how this calculation is affected by the refusal of 25 states to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. (Thanks to Brad DeLong at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth for the tip.) The bottom line is that as a pure fiscal and budgetary matter, refusing the Medicaid expansion is insane. The cost is $57 billion a year. The Act provides for federal funding to expand the state-federal healthcare program to residents earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level. The federal share will be 100% of the expansion cost through 2016, and stay at 90% or above through 2020.

The Supreme Court made the Medicaid expansion optional, and 25 states have turned down the deal. This is entirely the handiwork of Republican governors or legislatures determined to take a dramatic stand against Obamacare. Of the 25 refusenik states, six have governors who support the expansion over the legislature’s objection; four are Democrats, including the governor-elect of Virginia, and two are Republicans. It’s already been established that the failure to expand Medicaid will deprive 5 million residents in those states of the improved access to health coverage provided by the Affordable Care Act.

How Nelson Mandela used sport to transform South Africa’s image

The picture of him presenting the World Cup to Francois Pienaar, wearing the Springboks jersey, remains one of the most enduring images from his presidency. It’s hard to believe now but at the time the green and gold shirt was still deeply associated with the racial struggle in South Africa.

Mandela defied his advisers to wear it, knowing in an instant how the gesture could do more for harmony and equality than years of talks.

Koch Brothers Illegally Funnel Millions Into Campaign to Eliminate Pensions and Sick Pay
    By: Rmuse more from Rmuse
    Saturday, December, 7th, 2013, 12:00 pm

Greed is the inordinate desire to possess wealth, goods, or objects of abstract value with the intention to keep it for one’s self, far beyond what one needs for basic survival; for the wealthy it is in excess of any reasonable definition of luxurious comfort. Typically it is applied to those with a dangerous desire for, and pursuit of, status and unrestricted power that includes enriching oneself at the expense of others. There is a movement in America that transcends the normal definition of greed and selfishness, and not only do they desire to possess all the wealth, they are driven to impoverish the population with no apparent gain for themselves. It is not enough that they are rich beyond imagination, they subscribe to a philosophy that no-one in America except a certain class should have anything, and they are launching a nationwide campaign to eliminate public sector workers’ wages, pensions, sick pay, workers’ compensation because if they cannot have it no-one can.

On James Baker’s filthy lie that Ronald Reagan regretted his veto of the Anti-apartheid Act. To believe it was true, one would also have to believe that he regretted:

-Opposing the Civil Rights Act of 1964

-Opposing the Voting Rights Act of 1965

-Opposing the Fair Housing Act, and stating – “If an individual wants to discriminate against negroes or others in selling or renting his house, it is his right to do so.”

-Kicking off his 1980 Presidential campaign in the part of Mississippi where the KKK murdered Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner, and voicing his support for “States rights”.

-Opposing the revocation of tax-exempt status for segregationist colleges like Bob Jones University.

Or one could accept that Ronald Reagan was nasty old bigot.

Conservatives can’t clean up Ronald Reagan’s record. He was on the wrong side of history. Period.

CNN Asks Carney How Mandela Influenced Obama Even Though They ‘Only Met One Time’

Thursday’s sad passing of world civil rights iconNelson Mandela was a frequent topic of discussion at Friday’s White House daily briefing, as several reporters asked Press Secretary Jay Carney to elaborate on Mandela’s influence, and on details surrounding his funeral. CNN Chief White House Correspondent Jim Acosta asked about “this great impact” that Mandela had on the President, while repeatedly stressing thatPresident Obama had only met Mandela once.

With HealthCare.gov finally working, Democrats are able to fight back in the Obamacare anecdote war.

The White House and its outside allies are already ramping up a massive effort to emphasize the personal stories of people getting coverage under the health care law — ground that Democrats were largely forced to concede to the GOP during the uproar over canceled insurance policies.

Americans Discover They’re Trapped In GOP’s Medicaid Expansion Gap
    Dylan Scott – December 9, 2013, 6:00 AM EST8022

But in 25 states, that robust interest has a downside: Navigators are forced to tell more and more people that they probably won’t be able to get covered because their states, all of which had a GOP-controlled legislative chamber or governor, have refused to expand Medicaid. Lynne Thorp, who is overseeing the University of South Florida’s navigator program in that state, told TPM that about one in four people who contact her team fall into that Medicaid gap.

    – - – - –You’re probably familiar with Godwin’s Law, but let’s review. Invented by author and editor Mike Godwin, it states: “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.” A more current interpretation of the meme states that during a political debate, whoever is the first to invoke a Hitler or Nazi metaphor automatically loses the debate.
    — -SNIP – -
Along those lines, I’m fairly certain no one has invented a meme for invoking George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four while discussing national security and civil liberties, so here goes. Given enough time during a debate about national security or civil liberties, the chances of a Orwell or Nineteen Eighty-Four reference rises to 100 percent. And whoever is responsible for it loses the debate. To be clear, violating this rule goes far beyond simply using the adjective “orwellian” as a shorthand to describe double-speak or projection. Suggesting that the U.S. government is like the Oceania government of Nineteen Eighty-Four and its use of Big Brother is clearly broader and more damning than criticizing an instance double-speak.

The reason I’m bringing this up is that over the weekend I read the following tweet from blogger and Liberal Superhero Glenn Greenwald: “Note: key to 1984 wasn’t that everyone was always
being watched; the knowledge one could be is what imposed fear.”…

Two things: 1) You really need to use all purpose flour in the dough because it is the gluten in the flour that allows the dough to be stretched & formed. 2) feel free to adjust the spices as much as you want. Daughter keeps hers a little on the mild side because she serves to children as well as adults & usually provides a spicey dipping sauce for those who want to step things up.

Strawberry Shortcake’s hat! Dang! I hated those nasty stinky dolls! Just looking at that brings up the reek of artificial strawberry. UGH!

But waving at you anyway, GLH! HUGS & hoping you are having a great day ♥

          • Daltex82

            Why, why!!! LOL!

          • Aquagranny911

I know you all will ROTF but I actually like that hat. I would get rid of the pompom on top but the colors are great. I would wear that & look kind of cute with my white hair for nice contrast & my Granny face. Just saying….

          • Alma98

            LOL

          • Town

            Is that the raspberry beret?

          • TyrenM

The kind you find in a 2nd hand store.

          • Aquagranny911

I love the thrift stores for hats! You can find some great stuff there when someone clears out Granny’s closet.

You are too young to appreciate just how much fun it is for some women to wear an interesting hat. Besides hats are great when I am having a really bad hair day. So there!

          • TyrenM

Hold up. What we have here… is a failure to communicate

She wore a Raspberry beret. The kind you find in a 2nd hand store. Raspberry Beret. If it was warm she wouldn’t wear it much more…

Lyrics to “Raspberry Beret” by Prince and the Revolution.

          • crazycanuck

I got it, because I helped hubby write those lyrics lol.

      • Aquagranny911

LOL! I have some of my Mama’s and even one of Granny’s that I will wear for the specialness. I also have a Spanish lace mantilla that belonged to Mama’s GG Granny & passed down. Not technically a hat but it is beautiful. I wear it to church sometimes for Fam events just for the tradition of it.

        • Alma98

HA! Disqus finally let me like AG’s comment after I’ve been to the afternoon thread and back. lol

  • Alma98

These damn snowplow men are pissing me off! They keep pushing the damn snow back onto our driveway & our walkways. If I see them doing it I’m gonna have a talk with them. They did this last year in another neighborhood. And a 70 something yr old senior had a heart attack and died trying to remove the snow. Jackasses!

    • Aquagranny911

Dang, I hate that! In MA lots of times I would shovel out to go to work, come home & find my drive way blocked from the snow put up by the plows. Then I had to park in the street, get the shovel I kept in my trunk & dig my way back home. Just what you want on a winter day when you are tired & it’s getting dark!

Every time I try to like AG’s comment I kicked to the top page.
Come on Disqus get it together.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Does it only happen when you try to like a comment?

      • Alma98

It’s only AG’s comment about hats.

        • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

I liked her comment and that didn’t happen to me. What browser are you using?

          • Alma98

            Firefox

        • Aquagranny911

It’s probably my fault. I got completely bumped off the site right after I made that comment. I got the usual error message with this site doesn’t exist. I signed out of firefox & went to chrome. so far so good.

I think I am some kind of jinx.

          • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

You got a message saying this site doesn’t exist?

          • Aquagranny911

Yep! I can’t remember the error number. It was 500 something. I’m so use to Disqus figging with me that I just signed off & changed browsers. That usually works.

my laptop and tablet and IE on my desktop.
      Everything’s worked OK so far.

      • Alma98

It was that one comment qosine. AG said she got kicked off the site while commenting so that’s probably the problem. I can like all the other comments just not that particular one.

Retailers to List Shoppers’ Rights to Help Prevent Profiling: Sharpton
    Monday, Dec 9, 2013 | Updated 12:27 PM EST

The Rev. Al Sharpton says a coalition of major retailers has agreed to create a customer “bill of rights” that will be posted in stores to help prevent racial profiling.

Sharpton says civil rights leaders met Monday with representatives from retail chains including Barneys, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor and The Gap.

He says the bill of rights will be posted in stores and on retailers’ websites this week.

The agreement prohibits profiling and unreasonable searches. It states
that workers who violate their employers’ prohibition on profiling will
be disciplined and could be fired.

Penguins co-owner Burkle pays $1.4 million for Jesse Owens’ gold medal
    December 9, 2013 11:48 AM
    Associated Press

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – An Olympic gold medal won by Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Games has sold for a record $1.4 million in an online auction.

SCP Auctions said Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle paid
$1,466,574, the highest price for a piece of Olympic memorabilia. The
    online auction ended Sunday.

“We just hope that it’s purchased by an institution where the public
could have access to it, a museum or something like that,” Owens’
daughter, Marlene Owens Rankin of Chicago, told The Associated Press before the sale.

The auction house said Burkle, who also owns William Faulkner’s Nobel
Prize for literature, has plans for an educational tour of the historic
pieces. He wasn’t available for comment Sunday.

Yep, I can just imagine how many of the wives he slept with.

They did & in Tucson, some of their people were sent out to beg for money on the streets. They always looked like they were half drugged out or in some kind of trance.

It was a real cult like thing. I talked to somebody once who got away from them but it was not easy. After talking to her I did suspect that they really were using drugs on their converts.
