NFL Open Thread: Ed “Too Tall” Jones

Ed Lee “Too Tall” Jones (born February 26, 1951 in Jackson, Tennessee) is one of only 3 players who played 15 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. Jones’ tenure is unique in “bridging gaps” of the franchise in that he was a teammate of both Bob Lilly and Troy Aikman. By the end of his 15 years with the Cowboys, he had a career sack total of 106. His highest single-season sack total was 13 (in 1985). He was a member of the famed “Doomsday Defense” squad of the 1970s. Jones was given the nickname “Too Tall” because of his height, 6 feet, 9 inches tall.

He graduated from the Merry High School in Jackson.  As a senior he fought a Golden Gloves boxing match, recording a knockout of his opponent in less than a minute. He stopped shortly after that, when his basketball coach read an article about the fight, and made him choose between basketball and boxing.

He signed with Tennessee State University to play basketball, he left the team after two seasons, to concentrate on playing football under legendary head coach John Merritt.  Jones was the first overall draft choice in the 1974 NFL Draft.

Jones played defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys from 1974 through 1978, attempted a professional boxing career winning all of his bouts in 1979, and returned to Dallas to play for the Cowboys from 1980 through 1989. He was named All-Pro in 1981 and 1982, and played in 16 playoff games, including three Super Bowls. His success batting down passes, convinced the NFL to keep track of it as an official stat. The NFL didn’t start recognizing quarterback sacks as an official stat until 1982; although the Cowboys have their own records, dating back before the 1982 season. According to the Cowboys’ stats, Jones is unofficially credited with a total of 106 quarterback sacks (third most in team history) and officially with 57. He is the fifth leading tackler in franchise history with 1,032.

Jones played on three NFC champion teams and the 1978 Super Bowl winner. He retired for the second time in 1989, after a total of 15 seasons with the Cowboys.

Ed is a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

Too Tall! One of the best to ever do it! Him on one side, Harvey Martin on the other – made me love playing defense.

  • Miranda

I would have loved to have seen a big 6’9 Too Tall Jones at a step show. LOL, that HAD to be hilarious.

The Jaguars really beat the Texans? I had a feeling!
