POU Sunday Jazz Brunch Open Thread: Ladies of the Modern Jazz Sound

It’s Sunday, POU Family! I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Today, I am highlighting some modern female jazz singers.

Lizz Wright -My Heart

Lizz Wright (born January 22, 1980) is an American jazz/R&B singer and composer.

Wright was born in the small town of Hahira in the US state of Georgia; one of three children and the daughter of a minister and the musical director of their Church. She started singing gospel music and playing piano in church as a child, and also became interested in jazz and blues. She attended Houston County High School, where she was heavily involved in choral singing, receiving the National Choral Award. She went on to Georgia State University in Atlanta to study singing. Since then she has studied at The New School in New York, and in Vancouver. She currently resides outside Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Wright joined the Atlanta-based vocal quartet In the Spirit in 2000, which soon achieved critical acclaim, and in 2002 she signed a recording contact with Verve Records, where her musical compositions and vocal style led her to be compared to that of Norah Jones.

Her first album, Salt, was released in the spring of 2003 and reached number two on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz chart in 2004. Her next release was not a follow-up of her debut, but this record maintained the jazz and pop blend, while incorporating folk music to her musical blend. Dreaming Wide Awake was released in June 2005 and reached number one on the Top Contemporary Jazz chart in 2005 and 2006. In 2008, Wright released The Orchard to positive reviews. She released her fourth album in 2010. Most songs on Fellowship are gospel standards.

Diane Reeves- Afro Blue

Dianne Reeves (born October 23, 1956) is an American jazz singer, who has been one of the leading exponents of the genre since the 1980s. According to commentator Scott Yanow: “A logical successor to Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae (although even she cannot reach the impossible heights of Ella and Sarah Vaughan), Reeves is a superior interpreter of lyrics and a skilled scat singer.”

She is the only singer to have won this Grammy three consecutive albums.

Cecile McLorin Salvant -Poor Butterfly

Cassandra Wilson- You Don’t Know What Love Is

HealthCare.gov meets deadline for fixes, White House says

White House officials announced Sunday that they had met their Saturday deadline for improving HealthCare.gov after completing a series of hardware upgrades and software fixes to the troubled Web site.

As a result of the improvements: The average system response time is under 1 second; the error rate is “consistently well below 1 percent”; the online system is stable — not crashing — more than 90 percent of the time; and as many as 50,000 shoppers can use the site at the same time, or up to 800,000 visits a day, according to the administration report.

Eye on 2016, Clintons Rebuild Bond With Blacks

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/01/us/politics/eye-on-2016-clintons-rebuild-bond-with-blacks.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0

This article quotes Tavis Smiley among others. I think that this is about the Clintons realizing that they need more than tepid black support to get back into the WH. They’re going to need those 90+% numbers which Pres O and McAuliffe received. If black unemployment is anywhere near its current level, I don’t see them getting that (or any other Democratic politician unless the GOP is stupid enough to run an overt racist). Thus the Clintons’ best bet is to fight tooth and nail to get the teaparty out of the House next year, and to convince Blue Dogs to participate in expanding the economic recovery to include African Americans. They shouldn’t count on black people standing on hours-long lines only to be told that civil rights no longer means black people and that our issues have little to no political solution. They also really should not even think about counting on just hooking up the Tavis Smileys and CBC Reps, and expecting them to deliver an excited grassroots—PBO ended that hustle, and a lot of those leaders no longer have the pull to broker the black voting bloc. Get Bill Clinton’s backbiting self out of the news, and fight tooth and nail to deliver a Congress willing to make sure that black people are more included in the economic recovery. Were I a Clinton aide, that would be my suggestion, not dispatching people to liken PBO to a crackhead!

    • crazycanuck

They also really should not even think about counting on just hooking up the Tavis Smileys and CBC Reps, and expecting them to deliver an excited grassroots—PBO ended that hustle, and a lot of those leaders no longer have the pull to broker the black voting bloc.

And the fact that they don’t know that speaks volumes.

      • isonprize

And the fact that they don’t know that speaks volumes.

        BOOM!

    • itgurl_29

The fact that Billary are using Tavis and CBC haters as a way to get back in with the Black community shows how tone deaf they are. Apparently, they still think Tavis has some kind of standing with us, being that they suggested the NY Times get a quote from him. Yes, this article comes straight from the Clinton camp, of course.

      • gn

ICAM. It’s actually profoundly disrespectful because it insinuates that black voters are shallow and only follow black skin.

        • AxelFoley

Yup. It lets us know that they really don’t pay attention to us or what we think.

          • gn

They’re just going to line up a bunch of high profile endorsements and assume that will do the trick. I found a newspaper article from years ago with Maxine Waters stating that she was a huge critic of Bill Clinton due to welfare reform and prison sentencing…until he appointed her husband to an ambassadorship. This type of stuff no longer has the same clout in the black community IMO. They don’t get it.

          • AxelFoley

Greasing their pockets. Our black “leadership” in a nutshell.

          • jds09

Bingo. This thinking is gonna leave a gaping hole for a fearless democratic to run right up the middle and crush them AGAIN.

          • itgurl_29

Clinton Inc. is not in tuned with where the country is today. They made a fool of themselves in ’08 when they openly mocked Sen. Obama’s use of social networking and now they actually think greasing the palms of these old ass CBC members and Tavis Smiley is going to let them reclaim the black vote. They will lose yet again. They truly do not know what they’re dealing with.

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

I have my doubts about this. I think it’s the other way around. The Clintons don’t need Tavis because he can’t deliver anything. The CBC never stopped worshiping at the Clinton altar so there was no bonds to rebuild there.

    • AxelFoley

Was reading this article this morning and had to roll my eyes.

Did not we call this, fam?

    • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

I don’t think so gn. If they can get 80 plus and make up the difference in other demographics they will win handily. 90 plus may be out of the question for anybody running in 2016.

      • conlakappa

I think the President standing next to Joe B., talking about what they did as a team would get awfully close.

        • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

You are so right. I should have added that. Joe is the exception.

    • Kennymack1971

If Camp Clinton thinks that Tavis Smiley and Doug Wilder can deliver Black votes to Hilary they’re more boneheaded than I thought. The days of Black “leaders” being able to broker the Black community’s votes are dead. PBO has blown that up. They can trot out as many of their Black friends as they want..it ain’t gonna work.

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

That’s why I don’t buy this piece. The Clintons know for a fact they don’t need these people. This is about the usual hanger-ons making reservations to get a seat on the money train.

        • jds09

Bingo. Plus lazy reporters that are recycling 10 year old stories.

    • conlakappa

At this point, it is not the message but the messenger. It will be the MSM that gets her elected, through the stealth campaign and messaging so sublimated it will make that fried clam platter look like it bore the sign “I am Caligula.” Today’s example: CBS Sunday Morning had commentary about people who post photos of food, which early in the story included all of the Clintons standing together and another of Chelsea and HRC. Those photos were on either side of a photo of some roast beast. It was bizarre and offered with no context. No food in the people photos. At least as the focus, which was the whole point of the story.

    • jds09

This article is the kind of bullshit that’s profoundly insulting at its core. This meme states that “personal gestures” and good speeches with the “right kind” of Negros is the way back into black people’s good graces. FUCK THAT SHIT.

As the saying goes,”you can’t get 10 pounds of dirt back into a 5 pound sack.” We are living through an administration that has fought for, given legislatively, and competently implemented sound sane public policy.

The days of rubbing my back, coming to my church and taking pictures with me USED TO BE pushing the envelope, now its not worth a 10th of what it used to be.

I’m especially disappointed in Clyburn’s comments.

      • conlakappa

He has been misquoted before. Folk what tweet and follow him should ask him. I couldn’t make it past the second paragraph once I see that rat-bastard Rendell mentioned and the unseemly notion of networking at a funeral.

I feel in love with the show when Crane said to Abbe “I see you’re emancipated.”. A simple straightforward inclusion of history into pop culture, then onto the story. I literally screamed out “What?!, no they didn’t.” The rewound it a few times to make sure. It’s so rare to see that, a simple, logical, truth-based inclusion into a storyline.

The Miami Dolphins put the troubled offensive tackle on the reserve/non-football illness list Saturday, freeing up his roster spot so safety D.J. Campbell could be promoted from the team’s practice squad.

The move was not unexpected. Martin left the Dolphins on Oct. 28, the start of what became an explosive probe into allegations that a culture of bullying was around the team and inside its locker room.

Offensive lineman Richie Incognito was suspended Nov. 3 for his alleged role in the turmoil. Media reports Friday said the Dolphins and Incognito agreed to extend his suspension past the four-week window typically allowed by league rule, and that Incognito would resume getting paid.

One of the many things I love about PBO and FLOTUS is watching them parent their children. They are modeling how to live your life fully in a fishbowl. Time after time we get to glimpse these moments, where they are totally focusing on each other while surrounded by photographers and regular citizen with their camera phones. These young women are developing into to poised powerhouses before our very eyes.

      • Aquagranny911

So true! I hope I’m around to see what they do with their lives after college. This may sound silly but I have seen them as part of my own familia, like sort of adopted grandchildren. I really enjoy watching them grow into young women.

      • JojoRaze

I love how Sasha is resting her elbow on his back. I’m like ‘How you resting your hand on the president’s back, but then I remember, ‘that’s her DADDY, Jojo, she can rest her arm on his back.’

I’m also glad the girls have given PBO some fashion advice he’s implementing. He was still wearing his too big for him pre-prez clothes and I’m glad FLOTUS and the girls told him to modernize. The jeans here are beautiful on him.

        • jds09

I bet they’ve had that teenage moment when you look at your parent and say “you’re wearing that?” They have a fashion reputation to maintain. A smart parent can take a little knowledgeable well-meaning advice. It helps keep your teenage connection alive.

          • crazycanuck

i think they have had several teenage moments, no doubt. I remember it so well, “mom you’re not really going to wear that are you?” lol. I use to put my mom’s makeup for her when she went out, because really, my sisters and I had a rep to maintain lol.

          • Aquagranny911

            LOL!

          • Aquagranny911

I got some of that from my daughters. It can be a bit painful when they are right. They were not too critical. Mostly they were all over their Dad & brother. The brother mostly listened, the Dad ignored them!

          • jds09

I remember the moment when my son told me that my pants were “flooding.” He was right, more importantly he was straining to be sooooo diplomatic and loving in his comments, that it is one of my sweetest memories.

          • Aquagranny911

That is sweet. I think boys are more diplomatic. My daughters just tended to say: “That looks sucky!”

        • pamelabrown53

I still think some of his casual wear looks so 80’s “Members Only”. (As thin as he is, he could wear slightly tighter jeans and have a more distressed leather jacket). Still, put him in a suit, tux or tails and I’m a swooner.

    – – – –President Obama: ‘An AIDS-Free Generation Is Within Our Reach’-
    – -On the eve of the 25th World AIDS Day, President Barack Obama expressed hope, proclaiming that an “AIDS-free generation is within our reach.”

“Each year on World AIDS Day, we come together as a global community to fight a devastating pandemic,” the president said in a proclamation issued Wednesday by the White House. “We remember the friends and loved ones we have lost, stand with the estimated 35 million people living with HIV/AIDS, and renew our commitment to preventing the spread of this virus at home and abroad. If we channel our energy and compassion into science-based results, an AIDS-free generation is within our reach.”

To that end, he says the nation has made significant strides toward strengthening scientific investments, building effective HIV/AIDS education and prevention programs, and bringing together public and private stakeholders.

Sunday, Dec. 1 marks the 25th year of World AIDS Day and the president also discussed plans to address disparities in care and prevention, especially among those with the greatest HIV burden, which in the U.S. is the African-American community.

I’m so glad we don’t have any Republicans in my familia! Any political discussion at gatherings tends to focus on the goatfiggers and getting rid of them. Our conversations tend to be gossip about our neighbors & familia drama.

          • Alma98

            LOL

        • Aquagranny911

Hola Pamela! Did you see the recipe for that pork loin? I left it as a comment for you in the Wednesday thread. You should find it if you check your Disqus dashboard.

          • pamelabrown53

Thank you so much, Aquagranny! You’re the best! Now off to find by Discus dashboard so I can check it. (How pitiful is that)?

          • Aquagranny911

Just hit your “my Disqus” button at the top of your sign in. It should take you right there.

          • pamelabrown53

I did…and found it right away. That recipe sounds delicious: wouldn’t make a single change. I bookmarked it.

P.S. Aquagranny, you responded to a comment that I had a 2 day bout with the horrors for posting! I was furious with myself and so ashamed for being so crude and tacky. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t get blasted with a bunch of down rates.

          • Aquagranny911

I did? Don’t know but we don’t “down rate” here unless it is by accident. If we have a difference we do tend to talk it out.

I forgot to add to that recipe that you can take out the juice, cranberries, 2 or 3 of the apple wedges & one of the onion quarters & whirl them in your blender for a sauce to serve with the meat if you want. You might want to de-fat the juice first if the loin is particularly fatty. Daughter does this sometimes but you don’t have to.

PS: If somebody gets “crude” we just send them to the Bad Lounge where they can hang out with the rest of us sinners, lol!

          • pamelabrown53

Thanks, but I think I’ll stick with your original recipe. If there’s to much fat, I’ll either slice some off or braise it on the fat side.

      Another snowflake? Happy Sunday, Alma!

      • Alma98

Hola AG! It’s a snowflake sun lol.

    • rikyrah

      Good Morning, Alma.

      • Alma98

        Morning rikyrah:)

  • Aquagranny911

Hola POU! Great music this Sunday. I love Dianne Reeves. I’ve got one of her CD’s.

  • crazycanuck

Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte-Georges Seurat

    • rikyrah

one of my favorite paintings of all time. When I go to the Art Institute, I sit maybe 30-40 minutes just staring at it.

      • crazycanuck

I sit maybe 30-40 minutes just staring at it

One of my favorites also. I never saw it in person though. When I saw Monet’s water lillies in person I had the same reaction as you had with Seurat.

        • rikyrah

          I also love Monet’s haystacks.
          and modern paintings-Hopper’s Nighthawk

          • crazycanuck

Nighthawk is another painting that has become so famous I believe even non art lovers know about it.

      • JojoRaze

Ther’s something about this painting, and the pointillism style in general that makes me love art. I remember when I saw this painting in my art book for the first time-that’s when I knew I was an art person.

    @FORUS50
BRAVO to all those who worked on ACA website!! With it’s complexity alone in the verification &product options 800K capacity is INCREDIBLE.

  • Miranda

Hold up…I just read that NY Times article GN posted below…

“He then praised Mr. Wilder, who endorsed Mr. Obama in the 2008 race and was also at the McAuliffe campaign event, beaming.” When did Doug Wilder endorse PBO?!?!?!? What kind of revisionist history is THIS??

    @sherifffruitfly
#RacismEndedWhen cnn ran stories about the scourge of white-on-white crime infecting our community. oh wait.

Been in a sour mood because a recurring nightmare of mine (being on a subway train which derails over a body of water, facing my death) became reality for someone today—and on my birthday. Getting a huge bouquet with roses as big as my fist just worked wonders. Thanks to everyone here for being the best political community on the net, hands down. Have a great Sunday all…tomorrow’s not guaranteed for anyone, best to live each day to the fullest!

    • Alma98

Happy Birthday gn! Try not to dwell on things beyond your control it’ll drive you batty. Have fun it’s your birthday, like you said live life to the fullest. (((HUGS)))

      HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GN!!!
      HAVE A BLESSED DAY!

    • crazycanuck

Happy Birthday GN, I agree with Alma. I can be a bit of a pessimist, but I try to not dwell on things I can’t control.

    • PBomb

      Happy Birthday GN!

  • edp4bho

PBomb, you posted 3 of my favorite ladies of jazz. Saw Dianne Reeves few years ago. Fabulous. Liz Wright- just refreshing. And Cassandra Wilson is mesmerizing. Have to acquaint myself with Ms. Salvant. Thanks for the treat.

    • Aquagranny911

I have music envy! I would love to see Dianne Reeves in concert. I have a CD but I think seeing her in person would be so excellent!

      • conlakappa

She is another one I saw perform in Rock Creek Park for a reasonable fee. It was she and Najee on the bill. It was about 25years ago so early in their careers.

    • PBomb

Cecile is awesome. She is a favorite of mine.

  • Miranda

    Afternoon thread is up!!
