Saturday Afternoon Thread: A Colombian Obot!

(h/t The Obama Diary)

A baby donkey named Demo by its owner, Silvio Carrasquilla, stands dressed as the mascot of the U.S. Democratic Party behind a poster of U.S. President Barack Obama, outside Carrasquilla’s home in Turbaco, near Cartagena, Columbia, April 11. Carrasquilla, Turbaco’s former mayor who considers himself Colombia’s number one Obama fan, is sprucing up his house by painting it the red, white and blue of the U.S. flag to celebrate Obama’s arrival in Cartagena for the VI Summit of the Americas on Friday.

Gingrich renting out his donor list in desperate attempt to raise cash

Things haven’t been going well financially for would-be presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. First his think-tank declared bankruptcy. Then it was revealed that his campaign was so deeply in debt — to the tune of $4.5 million dollars — that it had had bounched a $500 check sent to the state of Utah to cover election filing fees. And now Politico reports that the campaign is so desperate for cash it’s resorting to renting out its donor list for as much as $26,000 per use.

“Campaign insiders attribute the problems partly to Gingrich and his wife Callista,” Politico’s Kenneth Vogel and Ginger Gibson suggest snarkily, “asserting that the couple was unwilling to downgrade from private jets and security details even as the campaign floundered. Insiders say Callista Gingrich required an entourage of at least two staffers – including one who dressed in an elephant costume to promote her children’s book – and a contracted security guard who followed her even on non-campaign trips.”

And just what were the duties of this “contracted” security guard, that he had to be with her during “non-campaign” events? Hmmm?

    • Newt needs to put Calista on the stroll or on the pole. #WhereDemDollasAt #ClurrHeelsCalista

      • JojoRaze

Maybe both he and Calista should become janitors at a school to learn some work ethic since obviously his business’s bankruptcy shows he hasn’t had any role models about entrepreneuriship. #GoodforthGoose

    • nellcote

That cost to rent the list seems high. Aside from his zillionaire buddy how many other people donated? 5, 6?

Rep. Virginia Foxx On People With Student Loans: ‘I Have Very Little Tolerance’ For Them

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) took on a unique enemy during a radio interview yesterday: people with student loans.

Though many politicians sympathize with those who are saddled with exorbitant student debt, Foxx, who chairs the House subcommittee on higher education, had a different take. Appearing on G. Gordon Liddy’s radio show, the North Carolina congresswoman recounted her own experience paying for college, where she worked her way through and graduated after seven years. Foxx then pointed to her own experience as justification for why she has “very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt.” “There’s no reason for that,” she concluded:

    – – – –Reed Elsevier — a personal information provider (of services such as Lexis-Nexis) — and American Traffic Solutions — a provider of traffic technology solutions — have become the 9th and 10th companies to drop ALEC.

    – – -Reed Elsevier stated that the campaign to highlight ALEC’s promotion of measures that disempower and disenfranchise minorities played a role in its decision. “We made the decision after considering the broad range of criticism being leveled at ALEC,” said a Reed Elsevier spokesman.

American Traffic Solutions spokesman Charles Territo said his group’s decision not to renew its membership with ALEC “was based on how best to allocate our resources.”

    – – –Despite House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA)’s 2010 pledge of a “zero-tolerance policy” for ethical violations, the number of House Republicans under scrutiny for ethical lapses continues to grow. Yesterday, the non-partisan Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission against Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA). The watchdog group alleges that Broun illegally hid the source of more than $300,000 in loans made to his 2007-2008 campaign. Like with his colleagues under investigation, Cantor and the Republican leadership have made no effort to remove Broun from his post as chairman of the Committee on Science, Space and Technology’s Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight. In accordance with all of these principles, the President signed two Executive Orders and three Presidential Memoranda the day after his inauguration. These five documents represent a bold first step and a guide to every action carried out in the service of the American people.

The Presidential Memorandum Regarding Pay Freeze states that the President will freeze his White House senior staff pay at current levels to the full extent allowed by law, ensuring that the budget will go as far as possible and signalizing that service in this administration should not be motivated by personal gain.

  • Brewer PAC spends big on her own book

By DAVE LEVINTHAL | 4/14/12 6:36 PM EDT

Arizona Republican Gov. Jan Brewer last year launched a federal political action committee, promising to use JAN PAC as a weapon to help create jobs, secure the nation’s borders, fight President Barack Obama’s health care reforms and shrink government.

Instead, one of JAN PAC’s primary expenses — almost $2,500 — has been purchasing copies of her book, “Scorpions for Breakfast,” from Amazon.com, federal disclosure records filed today indicate.

JAN PAC advertises that any donor giving it at least $100 will receive an autographed copy of the book.

The rest of JAN PAC’s other expenditures, less than $8,400 during the year’s first three months, have primarily gone toward email and Internet services, credit card fees and plane tickets. It did not purchase advertisements or donate money to political campaigns, its records indicate.

    POU FAM – – -Here’s ANOTHER – – — “I’ll GET BACK 2 U” – – -QUESTION. – -LOL – – – –

    – – — Does Mitt Romney Support Paid Sick Days?

    – — – –Raising children is hard work. And no one is arguing that Ann Romney — who has been the center of attention since Democratic strategist Hillary Rosen contended that she “never worked a day in her life” — or any other stay-at-home mom doesn’t deserve our respect. But the question is not whether child-rearing is work. It’s whether the policies championed by the candidates afford the same respect and deference to the moms who have no choice but to balance the demands of being a breadwinner with the demands of motherhood.

Ann Romney has tweeted, “All moms are entitled to choose their path.” But unfortunately for low-wage working moms and nearly half of private sector workers, the” choice” is either “go to work and send my sick kid to school” or “stay at home with my sick child and risk losing my job or needed income.” That’s a choice no parent should have to make. Does Mitt Romney agree?

Women are now half of all workers on U.S. payrolls and breadwinners or co-breadwinners in nearly two-thirds of all families. Their incomes are sorely needed to provide basic economic security for their families.

    – – – – -SKIP – – – –

    – – -Paid sick days legislation would enable workers to accrue paid sick leave and provide for provisions to help employers manage. It also makes economic sense as it costs businesses more in lost worker productivity to have sick employees come in, than it would cost to offer paid time off in the first place.

    – — –THIS – – -President Obama has come out in favor of such legislation. Mitt Romney, who claims to understand the plight of working people, has been silent. – – — -***crickets*** LOL.

Report: Nonpayment Led To Secret Service Prostitution Scandal

Secret Service Sex ScandalThe failure to pay a prostitute is reportedly at the heart of the Secret Service’s scandal in Colombia.

According to a Washington Post report, after a night of passion with a local woman, she requested that a Secret Service agent pay her.

The man refused, and she reported the offense to the staff of the Hotel Caribe (where members of the presidential advance team were) and local Cartagena, Colombia police.

The local police reported the nonpayment to American diplomats, with news of the rendezvous eventually working its way up the chain of command.

A spokesman for the Department of Defense told the Post that five military employees were being detained for violation of their curfew, and were involved in the same incident with the Secret Service.

    Carmelo Anthony hosts Martin family

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Trayvon Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, and older brother, Jahvaris Fulton, 21, were in New York City on Thursday for an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, not thinking they were going to visit Madison Square Garden the following day.

But New York Knicks All-Star Carmelo Anthony had a surprise invite awaiting the family, which included Martin’s younger brother who’s three and a half years old.

Anthony met privately in the Knicks’ locker room with the family and posed for pictures before New York’s 103-65 win over the Washington Wizards on Friday night. Fearing additional media attention, the family did not stay for the game.

Anthony said Martin’s death struck a bigger chord with him because it made him reflect on the passing of his sister, Michelle, who died from a pre-existing medical condition in December 2010. Anthony now remembers Michelle while he’s playing by having her name stitched on to his sneakers.
